A
utumn has come to Guilderland much as summer ended, with much more rain than is normal for our area. The extra rainfall we have received this year has been difficult for many of us to deal with. I’d like to take special note of the work done by a wide variety of people and organizations in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irene and Lee. While Guilderland did not experience the widespread devastation that was seen in neighboring areas, we saw serious flooding in several localized areas, as well as minor flood damage, downed trees and power lines, and power outages all across the Town. The dedicated and well-coordinated efforts of Guilderland’s emergency services personnel and our volunteer fire companies was instrumental in helping our residents to get through these storm situations with as little disruption as possible to their lives. I would ask all of our residents to join me in saluting the members of all these organizations for their outstanding service to the community during these storms and in their aftermath. On a more routine note, the Guilderland Highway Department will begin its annual leaf pick-up program for 2011 on Monday, October 17. As residents work on their fall cleanup activities, crews from the Town Highway Department will circulate throughout the Town with their leaf vacuum equipment. The leaf collection schedule for both the leaf vacuum trucks, and for bagged leaf pickup in those areas where the leaf vacuum cannot safely operate, is available in the “Guilderland TowNews newsletter mailed to Guilderland residents in mid-September. The schedule can also be accessed on-line at Guilderland’s

m u n i c i p a l website, www. townofguilderland. org. We ask all of our residents to cooperate to insure the safety of all by placing only leaves and evergreen needles at the edge of the pavement in areas where the vacuum trucks operate, and by placing bagged leaves and needles at the edge of the road where the vacuum cannot operate. Please avoid creating hazardous conditions by piling leaves so high that they reduce visibility, or putting them in spots where they limit the vision of pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers. If you have any questions about the leaf pick-up program, please contact the Guilderland Highway Department at 861-5108. There is still time this fall to enjoy some pleasant golfing weather at Western Turnpike Golf Course. The air is crisp and clear, and one of the benefits of the rainfall we’ve experienced this year is that the course remains lush and green. Please call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 to check on special promotions for the Fall season, or to reserve a tee time. If you don’t golf, but enjoy a pleasant walk in the Autumn weather, visit Tawasentha Park and take a hike around our 5-mile network of hiking trails. We are working hard to complete work on Guilderland’s 2012 municipal budget. As I am sure everyone is aware, the state of the national, New York State, and regional economies make this a challenging exercise. The Supervisor’s Preliminary budget is now available in the Town Clerk’s office and on the Guilderland website. A series of public budget workshops was scheduled, with the last session scheduled for October 13. A Final Budget for 2012 will be discussed and voted on by the Town Board at its November 10 meeting.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

I
f you have stopped for a few minutes to read this letter, I thank you! It seems as if everyone, myself included, are busier than ever. We have many new businesses that have opened, there are a ton of fundraisers, school and fall events, etc, and we have never been busier! Here is a quick overview for you if you are busy but want to know what’s going on! If you go to Stuyvesant Plaza, stop by the Meat House for some sample of the gourmet semi-prepared food that you can take home. There is also a new gift/novelty store that is fantastic called Ta-Da. Or, walk through Crossgates Mall and visit several new stores there, including Best Buy Mobile (car and cell phones BUT you can also order anything from Best Buy there too!), Clarkes Shoes, Skechers, and the new restaurant, J & A Prep Kitchen. And then locally, Western Ave has a few new places, including New-Ish used clothing and Guilderland Family Wellness, Pure Elements new Wellness Store with skin, hair, makeup, baby and pet products, and massage services and a JEI Learning Center in Pega Plaza for tutoring k-9th grade. Rumor has it that Guilderland Center is getting a new Italian restaurant, and Altamont is still looking forward to the Wine Bar being constructed. Upcoming Business Events through the chamber: Friday October 7- “Sales 101” Lorraine Ferguson, president, Direct Impact Associates is successful in growth through strategic leadership. $5 members, $10 non-members, 7:30-9 am at GCC offices. Friday October 28-7:30-9 am-Brew Up New Business at this Halloween themed mixer, hosted by business consultant and radio personality Melody Burns! Bountiful Bread, Stuyvesant Plaza. $7 members, $10 nonmembers. Friday November 4- “Red Hot Customer Service”-Lis CalandrinoConsulting with Fortune 500 companies throughout her adult career, author Lisbeth Calandrino is focused on helping businesses get smarter, wiser, and more profitable. $5 members, $10, non-members at GCC offices, 2050 Western Ave. You can register for events, see more events or get more information on our website, www.guilderlandchamber.com or call us at 456-6611. Lastly, I want to say how excited I am that the chamber is having a membership drive sponsored by Citizens Bank. Citizens sponsorship is allowing us to provide a $100 discount to 30 businesses that can benefit from the support of a community chamber like us!! If you know a business that you think will benefit from our chamber have them stop in. Enjoy fall! ALTAMONT COFFEE CAFE 100 Main Street, Altamont NY • (518) 861-5050 • www.AltamontCoffeeCafe.com Q. What year did your business start? e A. The Altamont Coffee CafĂŠ opened in June of 2010 under the name 100 Main Bean & Bakery. e Q. Where are you located and were you always in the same location? A. We are located at 100 Main Street in the Knowerville Plaza,, e directly across the street from the Altamont Fairground entrance on Rt. 146. Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. After a visit to Italy and experiencing the relaxed way off e enjoying a cafĂŠ I wanted to bring that feel back to my home d town and enable others to have the same experience. To spend quality time with a friend sipping a cappuccino or latte and nott be rushed. Q. How many generations have been running the business? A. My father was a retailer and had an ice cream store in Albany “Womer’s Karmelcornâ€?. My three brothers and I were always told by dad not to go into your own business. Well, all four of us have been successful in opening and building our own businesses. Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? A. We have developed a large clientele over the past year. Folks right now are coming in for our pumpkin lattes. Q. Are you known for anything special? A. Besides our wonderful delicious coffee that is from a local coffee roaster? We have many folks stopping in for our organic scones and cookies that are baked by a local baker. We have also become well known for my homemade vegetarian chili and homemade soup. Q. Q. What do you love most about the business? A. I love walking into the cafĂŠ and seeing people enjoying each other’s company and I especially love hearing laughter in the shop. Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. It goes without saying that the biggest challenge with any small business in the fall of 2011 is the local economy. Customers have definitely cut back on spending and we respect the challenges faced by all of us. Our priorities should be to our families and to support their needs before anything else. Local Real Estate Expert Reveals 3 Colossal Mistakes Sellers Make In This Market! Guilderland, NY - Let’s face it, the local real estate market data isn’t exactly stellar. Year to date in 2011,, over 20% of homes listed for sale in Guilderland failed d to sell. With all of the ups and downs in the real estate e market over the past several years, finally there iss some good news for home sellers A Free market report has just been released thatt provides valuable information about how to position n your home in the market place so you get the highestt price possible. For years, real estate agents have relied on locall market figures to advise homeowners on how to o determine the right selling price for their home. The e problem is, these figures don’t give you the totall picture you need to get the highest price for your home when you sell! It’s not commonly known that just understanding what is going on in your immediate neighborhood doesn’t give you the complete information you need to get the maximum price for your home... or get it sold on time. Yet, too often sellers make this mistake. Now, thanks to a new computer system, home sellers can get extremely accurate, up-to-the minute information that will help them get the highest price for their home when they sell. The FREE REPORT is titled “How to Sell Your Home for the Highest Price and avoid the three colossal mistakes typical sellers make!”, and also includes a computerized market report. If your home is currently listed for sale with a real estate broker, there are some restrictions on what information can be provided.
However, if you are about to put your home on the market for sale, the complete report can be provided to you without charge. The computerized market report alone could save you thousands when you sell your home! To get a copy of the report, you can call the message line below for a free recorded message and a written copy of the report. Call now and find out what most buyers are hoping you never read about.
Call 1-800-448-7016, ext. 1001, 24 hrs, for Recorded Message and Your FREE Report! If your property is currently listed with a broker, this is not intended as a solicitation of that listing.

while ago I learned a very important fact at a presentation during my ongoing enrichment as an educator. This fact is that any person that you are dealing with is doing their best given their personal set of circumstances at any given moment in time. We can discuss any subject, any environment or any person. What really matters is that given their set of circumstances they are doing their best. Their best may not meet your needs. Their best may be less than you would give and therefore not meet your expectations. Their best at that time may not even be the best they are capable of. It is however, the best they can produce at the moment given their constraints. You may not think it is true, but the variable and personalized language of “their constraints” or “their circumstances” makes it true. During the course of an interaction with someone, assuming that your partner is purposeful with their negative actions will lead you to a battle that you may think that you win, but overall you don’t. This is true because you do not get what you wanted out of the interaction, even if you win the battle. To understand that their responses and actions are the best they can muster given their challenges will give you insight into getting more out of your interactions. As teachers, my colleagues and myself, in both our academic schools and martial arts schools, can benefit from this view. Teaching is, in the end, the art of getting students to do things you design to help them reach a goal within a set of constantly changing parameters, the most important of which is how the student feels about doing what you want them to do at the moment you want it. This is very helpful to me because I have such a variety of students with so many different needs, but certainly this can be applied to any interaction you may have within your family or even at your job. Look at it in this over simplified example. If someone bumps into you and as a result calls you a *#&%#$%, you can escalate the situation or you can realize that given their set of circumstances that was the best they knew how to do. Then you can just treat them really nicely and notice how that changes the way they are, or you can just move away hoping that they learn better some day. The bottom line lesson: never, ever, ever take it personally. It is not you. It is their set of circumstances that they are reacting to.

A. The recent large increase in soft drink consumption in our society has caused a significant increase in tooth decay, especially amongst our teenage population. These drinks, which include: sodas, iced teas, sweetened juices and energy drinks have approximately 10 teaspoons of sugar or more per 12 ounces. These drinks are also highly acidic and when mixed with sugar can quickly dissolve tooth enamel and cause cavities . A young persons’ set of teeth can go from decay free to hopelessly decayed in a matter of a few years. Due to the marketing efforts of soft drink manufacturers, we now have a whole generation of Americans who believe that the only option when thirsty is to reach for a can of soda or another sweetened beverage. Be conscious of the damage these drinks may cause your teeth, and protect your children and yourself by choosing healthier options. If you or someone you know has a problem with soft drink consumption, we can help with information and strategies on how to get unhooked from the soft drink addiction. Selling Your Home in 2011? Getting to the real estate closing table today is much more challenging than a few years ago. During the first 9 months of 2011, only 54% of Guilderland homes listed have actually gone under contract or closed. In this kind of a real estate market you need a realtor with the experience and a proven track record on your side. With over 2000 homes sold and 25 years in the business, Fraida Varah has sold more homes in Albany County than any other realtor. Find out what homes are selling for in your neighborhood by going to fraida.com and clicking “What’s Your Home Worth” ...or call us at 438-9302
