CHILDHOOD Basic Profile Ar. Mustapha Kamal was born on 1964, in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He was the eldest of 3 children, including one younger brother and sister. His mother worked as a teacher and father served for the government and now they have retired. His parents were strict to him during his childhood time as he is the eldest child in the family. They taught him to become discipline in terms of time management, the importance of focus, set up goal and always complete the task given and which led him to become successful in his carrier. He received his primary education in Pasar Road English Primary School and in 1977, he studied at Victoria institution secondary school which is a well-known secondary school for boys and also one of the oldest schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Growing Environment Ar. Mustapha Kamal has deep appreciation for nature as seen in his works. This is due to his living environment where he grew up in a city with nature context. His neighborhoods children loved to play tree house, where they climbed up the tree and construct the tree house themselves. Although they faced many challenges like bitten by insects, fell down from tree and chased down by the neighborhood adults but these does not restrict him from doing what he like. During his days in primary school, Ar. Mustapha Kamal used to mix with many Chinese, Malay and Indian friends and they hang out together like one big happy family. They always visit each other house during every festivals including birthday party to exchange and share food and culture. They organized study rotation where one week study in one house and another week in other person house. By doing so, their family get to know each other well and built up strong

relationship between the neighbors. This is the point where he get to know more about other races culture which assist him in his architectural life after. Every weekend was the best part of his childhood life as he enjoyed hanging out with his friends all day long in the jungle, woods and river. During secondary school he joined boys scout as extracurricular club activity and further studies in New Zealand for degree where the country was surrounded by only nature. Therefore, everything that relates to Ar. Mustapha Kamal during he was young was nature as he was exposed to nature and understand the journey of senses like sound, smell, heat temperature and the spaces.

Hobbies, Interest and Personality Ar. Mustapha Kamal lifelong hobby is stamp collection where he is still practicing it until now. By collecting the stamps, he get to know all sorts of knowledge related to the country like the location, landmarks, technologies, culture, famous people and buildings. This created interest of him to travel all over the world to see the buildings where in the stamp he collected. He is an active person as what his friends describe him as a “busy bee where he cannot sit down quietly alone. He is exposed to lots of activities and as mention above he always hang and explore around with his friends during he was small. This explained why he chosen to be architect as he loved to meet all kinds of people and having social interaction with them. He treasured his friendship and maintained a long friendship for more than 20 years together with his university friends.

Starting Point of Architecture Unlike other architects, before Ar. Mustapha Kamal started to draw, he started to build first instead. The tree house that he constructed with his friends as mentioned above was the starting point of architecture in his life around age of 8 to 10. The understanding of balance, structure, span and support can be learned throughout the construction of tree house. One of his neighbor’s father was an architect and he often get advice from the architect about construction. The architect taught him about the building materials like timber, concrete, bricks, metals and also the building comfort like shading, glare and ventilation. It is rather amazed to know that Ar. Mustapha Kamal have already get in touch with architecture related stuffs in such a young age. In his

young age, he likes building things and he take architect as a natural career to take on to realize this sort of interest instead of ambition. Architecture was always his first choice in mind when choosing occupation during his school life. In his opinion, architecture is the one that best describe what actually is art and engineering.

Role Model Ar. Mustapha Kamal treats his neighbor’s father who was an architect as the person or point that enlighten his interest towards architecture. Every time when he faced problem in construction, he always went to him for solution and he will note the solutions down in his book. The architect will also share Ar. Mustapha Kamal his past experience and encourage him to be an architect. Rather than saying the architect was a role model to him, actually he was the one who bring him to know what architecture is all about and start planting interest to it.

In conclusion, different from other children, Ar. Mustapha Kamal childhood life is very much exposed to stuffs that related to nature and architecture. His active and adventurous personalities made him to explore outdoor more and indulge himself into nature unlike children nowadays that have less contact with nature because of the invention of the new digital devices around. The joy of exploration and discovery in the natural world not only able to help in stimulates and pleases senses, it also makes people feel that they are in a supportive and harmonious environment. By linking every stage of his early life up, it seems that little by little he slowly accumulates the strong foundation in architecture to what he achieved now as an architect.

EDUCATION Primary and Secondary Education Ar. Mustapha Kamal completed his primary and secondary education in Ampang which mention in his childhood that he was a KL boy. In 1970, he studied at Pasar Road English Primary School and he is an active and playful boy in every activities. In 1977, he studied at Victoria institution secondary school which is a well known secondary school for boys and one of the oldest schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During his study in secondary school, he wasn‟t the top student in class but above average student. He wasn‟t exposed so much on architectural-related knowledge; instead, he was more involved in teamwork with his friends. He has a group of friends that study together to share information and knowledge and play sport and exercise together. He thinks that is a factor that why architecture is natural because architecture is all about group, no one can work individually without teamwork. Although they have same experiences like play and study together, some of them having different interest because at that time what they know is only the single word career such as lawyer, engineer. Generally, their background actually teach them how to work together, even though he have his own mind but he still need others people thought to work with him, it means that is a group thinking. Due to his personality, he couldn‟t control himself to sit down and have a rest and people used to call him “Busy Bee”. Once of his best time during secondary school is joining boys scout as extracurricular activities. As mention in his childhood, he likes to play and experiencing in nature, boys scout give him a good chance to explore nature in term of sound smell and feeling. Besides that, he like social intercourse and make friends, joining activities is giving him an opportunity to widen the scope friends. Moreover, he is also a kind of sporty person and he used sport as a recreation to get rid of stressful work.

Ar. Mustapha Kamal like Geography very much during his secondary school because he think that geography is not just about places and map, it‟s more than that and he started learned about architecture in geography. Geography is all about others people culture, as a human we should explore and learn more from the worldwide. The knowledge of geography becomes one of the interests to bring him toward architecture. He was enjoying in drawing free hand global map to understand and learn that places and shapes of every country. For the reason this was created the interest of sketching. Geography gave him a chance to communicate with pictures, whereby others subject only communicate with numbers and words. Besides that, geography also creates an interest of photography and travel around the world. He said that architect should travel to observe and experience different type of space around the world.

Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Architectural Education After graduated from secondary school, Architecture was his first choice for professional path. The reason to make up his decision in choosing architecture is that architecture study combines the intellectual challenges of both Art and Engineering with the opportunity for creative design. He believes art can be perfectly crafted with mathematical and scientific considerations. In 1988, he got his part 2 and completed his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in University of Auckland, New Zealand. At that time, they don‟t have Master‟s Degree in Architecture, it‟s only diploma and degree. Furthermore, he got his part 3 in 1984 which is 20 years ago in Malaysia. We are curious on his thought for the differences in studying in Malaysia and abroad (New Zealand) and what is it in that different environment that affects his way of architectural exploration. He said that everyone choose to go big cities like America for their university life, but he is the person who like nature and New Zealand is a place with less entertainment and more engage with nature so that will be the best place for education. He pointed out that the most different architecture university part between New Zealand and Malaysia is that New Zealand gave the freedom of thought to people and act what they feel correct but they caution them once they are doing wrong. New

Zealand Architecture education has their own rules and regulations, but the marking criteria are similar to Malaysia architecture education. Therefore, he mentions that the important thing in New Zealand is they won‟t do thing last minutes as they having four studio classes in a week and Wednesday are the free time their only time to catch up the progress. „„Be friends with your lecture, so they will present to you in a good manner.‟‟ Said Ar. Mustapha Kamal.

At that time they don‟t have advance internet, he started his exploration from book, going to site and travel. As mention he likes to travel around the world, so that he works during summer break to earn a saving to travel for his architecture exploration. Although he travel around, he went back to Malaysia every two years to refresh his mind. When we talk about racism, he said that he was lucky because New Zealand is the opposite with other country. Instead of racist, they are more interested with Asian and they don‟t have any negative feeling of us. In conclusion, his education path is quite smooth without serious frustration. He doesn‟t face so much hard time during his University life and he is clear on what he wants and what he needs. Having a good personality can help in social life, home, career and guarantee a happier life in general. Some people have particularly magnetic and charismatic personas, while other people are strong listeners and advice-givers. In cultivating and nourishing an individual personality, it is important to have the ability to build on and develop strengths, while at the same time acknowledging and working to improve on the weak points in your personality. There are ways to build and develop a personality that truly reflects who you would like to be. His personality is actually leading him into his clear future path.

Working Experience After graduated with Bachelor of Architecture from University of Auckland, New Zealand, Ar. Mustapha Kamal continued to work at Auckland City Council & the Ministry of Environment for 1 to 2 years. For further info, he worked there as part time before he graduated. Ar. Mustapha Kamal chose to work at the department due to his passion on the nature environment. As mentioned from him, he already exposed to nature and fell in love with nature since he was a child. As working at the department, he could contribute his effort on nature & built environment. This was how Ar. Mustapha Kamal appreciated and protected the nature.

In 1990, Ar. Mustapha Kamal decided to come back to Malaysia and worked at Kumpulan Karim-Lai Akitek Jururancang. As Malaysia is his country, he decided to serve his country instead of staying at New Zealand. Kumpulan Karim-Lai Akitek Jururancang was the first architect firm he worked in Malaysia. It was located at Kota Kinabalu. Malaysia. He had contributed to the firm for about 6 years. During working at the firm, Ar. Mustapha Kamal involved in everything on architecture as fresh graduated. In the earlier stage in the firm, he already had the chance to involve in some of project from start to end. The principal of Kumpulan Karim-Lai Akitek Jururancang brought him for site visit, meeting with clients, and also work with design. This was how he developed and enhanced his architecture knowledge and experiences within 6 years. With his intelligent, ability and performance in the firm, Ar. Mustapha Kamal finally became the partner of Klaf Architects, which previously named as Kumpulan Karim-Lai Akitek Jururancang.

In 1997, Ar. Mustapha Kamal with his another partner set up MBA Architect Sdn. Bhd. He was the Executive Director in MBA Architect Sdn. Bhd. Unfortunately, Ar. Mustapha Kamal separate with his partners due to different ideas and goals.

On the other hand, before setting up MBA Architect Sdn. Bhd., Ar. Mustapha Kamal already established his own sole proprietorship in 1996. Therefore, the separation on MBA Architect Sdn. Bhd. did not much affected on Ar. Mustapha himself. The company was named as Arkitek Mustapha Kamal (AMK). The practice stems from a desire and want for a new and more dynamic platform to launch into the new millennium and to provide and to deliver his strength after years of mature architectural experience in working for firms like MBA Architect Sdn. Bhd., Klaf Architects and Kumpulan Karim-Lai Akitek Jururancang. AMK offers full architectural services such as Master Planning, Residential, Commercial, Institutional, Scientific Research, Light Industries & Health Related. CATEGORIES OF SERVICES

Mustapha Kamal also leaded AMK to aspire towards architectural designs that promote harmony between the natural environment and the built environments and; the engender positive accords between man and the physically and socially-molding man-made environments. The designs should be aesthetically pleasant functional and at same fulfill clients’ requirements. Ar. Mustapha Kamal always emphasized that, “Architect is a problem solver. As a professional architect, he needs to solve the client’s problem while designing the building.” For every single project, Ar. Mustapha Kamal would look for client’s brief and needs. He needed to know which client was the one who are making the decision. For instance, when he designing a house, Ar. Mustapha Kamal needed to consult the brief from the owners which both are husband and wife. When come to designing the kitchen, he needed to consult the opinion from the wife instead of the husband. This was what he meant, “to know which client was the one who are making the decision”. After consulting from the owner, Ar. Mustapha Kamal only applied the design concept and also looked for precedent studies. Due to the professional services from Ar. Mustapha Kamal, he gained many clients from the day of AMK establishment.

Furthermore, Ar. Mustapha Kamal also faced some of the challenges and problem during his working time. In 1997, there was economy crisis, which was right one year after establishing Arkitek Mustapha Kamal (AMK). Money was the major issue during 1997 economy crisis. Ar. Mustapha Kamal got the loan approval from the bank but he decided to give up the loan due to high rate and continued to run the company by himself. Ar. Mustapha Kamal also mentioned that, it was already lucky for him during 1997 as he still gained 10 projects on hand. At that time, due to short of man power, he had to employ more staffs to run the projects. In the end, to solve the financial problem, he needed to pay the staffs by installment. All of these showed how Ar. Mustapha Kamal balanced and solved everything in the management of his company.

All over these 20 years, Ar. Mustapha Kamal had contributed himself deeply in architecture field, the thing makes him feel most satisfactory is when saw people feel comfortable of his building. He was proud of his every single project all over Malaysia. Apart from working for his own, Ar. Mustapha Kamal also contributed to the society. He joined Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) as the corporate member of. He had also served 3 terms as PAM Council Member (1997-2000). THE DESIGN PRINCIPLE AND DESIGN PHILOSOPHY OF AMK AR MUSTAPHA KAMAL

Ar. Mustapha Kamal believes that inspiration can be anything. Inspiration can be mathematic, nature, and etc. When his study period, he get his inspiration by books, go to the site or tour. Based on his working experience, he didn’t work with famous architect at Malaysia or oversea because he says that every architect has freedom to have own style to design and solve the problem. He believes that there is no style in architecture, we design based on the client brief needs and site analysis then concept design will follow by the client need. He says that we cannot have pre concept idea because we will limit our self in design and will cause fighting with the client. Besides that, He mentioned that we can look many other architects ways on how they solve the problem on their work, we don’t just look on one particular architect works because if we study on one particular architect works then we have limited vocabulary and we don’t know whether the solution suit in our country . As an architect, we need to travel more than the clients. He says that travel can help us to feel and experience the building space, see other country architecture and can understand the client’s needs. Furthermore, he mentioned that we architect are problem solver, we help clients to solve what they want, we convince the client what should and what shouldn’t because we understand building design principle more than client do. For example, ‘Sometime happy husband and wife can break up because of our design, show how powerful we are’, say Ar. Mustapha Kamal. We need to know who making decision for the building, an architect just listen to the one that in charge.

He says that as an architect, we know how to talk but we don’t know how to explain. We need to know to differentiate telling, explain, and discuss. He mentioned that telling is about instruct people to do things and explain is the architect try to convince the client. Before we able to do that, we need to know what architecture all about is because we architect are problem solving. ‘From the day one an architect even before now they got word sustainability, architects already design sustainability. So is not now we only do sustainability, sustainability is going on since we become an architect. If u didn’t apply sustainability mean that you didn’t understand what you going through in you architecture school period’ Says by Ar. Mustapha Kamal. In the other hand, He says that urbanization is total picture of a city, people need to understand what is living in urban like. He pointed out that living in urban can’t have many cars, if we wanted to have many car then we should pay for the space like Singapore country that show the country is in urban state. We can’t put village housing in urban state and transportation is the problem in making urban city. As an architect, we need to know how far our public transportation travel and how far car we open up the city. Nature, urban and architecture all related to each other he says. Ar. Mustapha Kamal (AMK) has his own principal in his design. He apply these principle every single project that he does till now. INTENT The intent at ARKITEK MUSTAPHA KAMAL (AMK) is to create excellent planning and architecture by having a free exchange of ideas between the client and the designers. AMK design based on client’s need and fulfil client’s requirement. Effectiveness AMK says that every design solution must be, first and foremost, effective for our clients and meet their objectives. INDIVIDUAL YET SYSTEMATIC

There is no AMK ‘style’. Evert project has an individual solution. He and his team deliberately avoid having his design controlled by a ‘system’ but they are deeply committed to being methodical and thorough in addressing our client’s needs as well as recognizing the cultural environment of the project. TEAMWORK MANAGEMENT A firm and responsible design management network is vital for the efficient utilization of creativity. Powerful design solutions is come from the real teamwork. Every stage of the project need teamwork and leadership for example for conception, development and implementation. EXCELLENCE At AMK, they insist on excellence and run the practice with an unwavering sense of urgency and purpose. They do their best for the client’s need. INTEGRITY AMK and his team are committed to the highest professional and ethical standards. His design philosophy are good design fulfills the dimension of harmony and vitality. It looks at the future in the context of our past and the present. It aims to help maintain a balance between man and the nature. Beauty is its inspiration; function is its mandate. He say. Great architecture comes from a combination of talent, experience, and an understanding of the nature of the nature of the issues involved in the projects. Besides that, a good designer can combine traditional concepts with new visions to create exceptional projects. AMK and its team members bring to projects, talent and a unique combination of skills and experience that when combined with a farsighted program, can achieve remarkable long term result. This together with the ability to understand the cultural, traditional and social interaction with architecture has the potential to produce very significant architectural result. To describe more about the philosophy the AMK team has practice these skills in

design architecture and management for over 16 years and have always been responsive to the communities in which they have worked. They focus on the comfort of the community lives and not on to earn profit and not to have their own style of design. Ar. Mustapha Kamal and his team is to provide a wide variety of services and they offer multi-disciplinary resources of Master Planning, Architecture and Urban Design. His aim is to achieve creative design solutions that work not only in economic and cultural terms but also user friendly and effective for his clients. His team creative process is synergistic, not only he the only one that work, involving all the team members from the beginning. It all begin with the definition and understanding of the project objectives and client values. Alternatives are evaluated and discusses with the clients along the project. Out of this dialogue evolves the distilled, that the unique to that project. All he want is about teamwork and work together. In view of diverse range of problem that requiring solutions in each field, AMK combines the expertise of experienced professionals, from within different fields to solve the best solution that suit for the clients. Moreover, every project is treated with a high degree of professional commitment and care with his constant effort to achieve a level of service and design for his clients. In conclusion, ‘we need to become our self and not copying other architect. Because we have our own thinking and our own way to solve design problem.’ Says Ar. Mustapha Kamal.
