Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over the past decade. In 2017, it was Farah Tejpar, MD estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Farah Tejpar, MD, Medical Director for the Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon and Half Marathon, to answer key questions about running, and how runners of all types can prepare.

Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons. Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.

Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. For an appointment with Dr. Tejpar or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida sports health specialist, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/sportshealth.

South Florida Takes Pride in Historic Significance

O

n an early April day, a bit more than 500 years ago, Spanish Explorer Ponce De Leon landed near what is now Saint Augustine and claimed it for the Spanish crown. He subsequently sailed down the east coast surveying the land in what is now Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. It is amazing how far we’ve come since those fateful days. At the time of Ponce De Leon’s arrival, the only residents of South East Florida were a Native American tribe known as the Tequesta. The region’s total population at the time is estimated to have been between 800 and a few thousand inhabitants. The population remained largely unchanged for the next 400 years. Shortly after its founding, Broward County had a population just over 5,000 people and consisted mostly of uninhabitable wetlands. Today, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties are home to more than five million people; few areas in the world have grown faster over the past century. We have the fifth and sixth largest school districts in the United States. The region also boasts a vibrant economy and diverse culture. The area’s rapid growth and unique climate have brought unique challenges: Will we be able to continue to create jobs for continued immigration and the maturation of the huge population of school-aged kids? How will we manage rising sea levels in a region so dependent on tourism? Can we continue to integrate the varied backgrounds and perspectives of residents and newcomers? How can we guarantee freedom and safety for all? We are optimistic. South Florida is a young, dynamic region that has solved difficult problems in the past and will do it again in the future. Our brightest days are still ahead. We, for our part, are proud to be part of this community and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Sincerely,

Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

Counting Sheep and Counting Blessings – Co-Sleeping Safety Pajama Party BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

t was a busy Saturday morning at the Plantation Barnes & Noble bookstore in early February when approximately 50 adults and 40 little ones attended the Co-Sleeping Pajama Party presented by Plantation General Hospital (PGH). The free informative event provided arts and crafts, a magic show, story time, light refreshments, and a visit from Plantation Fire Department mascot, Sparky. Children were entertained while the parents were able to learn from Plantation General Hospital Medical Director and Pediatrician, Dr. Deborah Ingram. Julie Guy, 101.5 LiteFM morning DJ, was one of the special guest readers along with Plantation General Hospital CEO, Madeline Nava. Also, in attendance were PGH pediatricians Dr. Straw and Dr. Haywood as well as Dr. Bela, PGH podiatrist. Dr. Michael Friemark, PGH pediatrics specialist, shared his other skills as he amused the kids with his magical talent. The topic of the morning was “Co-Sleeping Safety”. Dr. Ingram shared the horrifying statistics that annually over 3,500 previously healthy infants in the United States continue to die needlessly from co-bedding with parents. The risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is all too high, but so preventable. The main message was that infant sleep safety is best

achieved when parents DO NOT place their infant in the bed with them. However, sharing a room with the baby does reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related causes of infant death. Other preventative measures discussed were crib safety guidelines such as using a “safety-approved” mattress and keeping soft objects, loose bedding, and toys out of the sleep area. An urgent reminder to always follow a health provider’s guidance on baby vaccines and health checkups was given. Another important message that couldn’t be stated enough is to always place a baby on his or her back to sleep for naps and at night to reduce the risk of SIDS. “The issue of infant sleep safety is important because it is an area of preventative health care where we are not seeing a lot of improvement,” exclaimed Dr. Ingram. “Infants in a home with smokers, born prematurely, born small for dates, at risk for reflux or aspiration and/or overfed are some of the particularly more vulnerable. Room sharing is a very safe and recommended alternative to sharing a bed with your infant.” For more information on crib safety guidelines, contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission at 1-800-638-2772 or visit cpsc.gov. To learn more about SIDS and the Safe Sleep Campaign ®, call 800-505-CRIB or visit safetosleep.nichd.nih.gov.

Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie

I

n July 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create

an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. What is “The Artis Way? ” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization.

▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them.

▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. ▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect. ▸ “S” is for success and recognition.

If you experience restless legs, numbness, tingling, cramping, burning, swelling or an achy feeling in your legs the Soffer vein experts can help. It is quite common for these symptoms to develop as men and women age. Besides the discomfort it can make you want to hide your legs as spider veins and varicose veins become very visible. Lymphdema (a condition that occurs when the network of vessels, veins and arteries that circulate fluids through is not functioning properly) will cause swelling and damage to the skin. Fortunately these conditions are all

treatable. For many years people have had to go to Soffer’s facility in Miami for treatment but Soffer Vein and Vascular now has a locationsin Deerfield Beach, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Aventura, North Miami Beach and Hialeah/Miami Lakes. Dr. Soffer is a clear leader in his field. For several years he was featured in the ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion.” Adam Kustin, a company spokesperson commented, “In this field, he is as good as it gets, yet the man is so kind, so warm and so approachable, it has spawned the growth of this practice. You want the best,” said Kustin. “Two people can walk in with the same bulging vein issue, but there’s no way to tell if either has any real underlying health issues. It’s more than just cosmetic.” This is why it is so important to see someone with the appropriate expertise and not someone merely offering a cosmetic fix. “Sometimes people aren’t bothered by the bulging vein but they experience achy, very tired legs, numbness or restless legs and they never associate these “symptoms” with varicose veins. That’s why seeing a doctor as qualified as Dr. Soffer and his staff becomes so vital.” Treatment is usually simple. “And painfree,” Adam added. “Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. The new lasers are very low risk, super accurate and extremely effective. We can also inject saline. It depends on the severity.” Adam continued stating that Dr. Soffer “wants to help people prevent these life-threatening issues BEFORE they take a toll. Before they compromise how a patient lives life. He SEES people pain free,

enjoying life again who didn’t even know it was possible for them. They never connected the dots, he does.” If you are experiencing any pain or swelling in your legs or want to get back more youthful looking beautiful legs, Soffer’s signature minimally invasive vein treatments are a great solution. Soffer Vein and Vascular with six locations will provide a Complimentary vein screening available by appointment only for new patients 18 and older. Patients can discuss their concerns with the Soffer medical staff and review their best options for treatment. There is no obligation to pursue treatment. Most insurances are accepted. Dr. Soffer plans to open a Weston location next. Members of his staff speak Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese.

South Plantation Students Get Down & Dirty to Protect Mother Nature

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

F

or the past 15 years, the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet program has been training students to become educated habitat stewards. Fortunately, many community partners have recognized the value of the teen-based workforce and collaborated with the school to put the knowledge into practice. Personnel at the Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA!) work side-by-side with students in all grades to help the teens expand their knowledge base to become more accomplished stewards. Juniors in Experimental Science 3 take part in a three-part, hands-on program which takes place on campus and off-site. “Working with students from South Plantation High is a unique opportunity to give the students the tools, knowledge and inspiration to be the change they seek in the world,” explains Kristen Hoss, Executive Director of YEA! Students in this program can be seen spending a Saturday at the beach. However, they are not doing what most teens would be doing such as swimming, hanging out, tossing a ball, and getting some sunshine. These dedicated Paladins can be seen planting sea oats and picking up trash. And, around the school campus these students can be seen cleaning out weeds and invasive plants.

“It’s important to involve partners because teachers are teaching us the information, but partners are helping us apply it with hands-on experiences,” says junior Hallie Hodder of Fort Lauderdale. All programs correlate directly with the curriculum and provide new and interactive ways to learn key content. Besides traveling to state parks to learn about flora, fauna, and ecosystems. Classroom activities include using Florida’s ecosystems as case studies to examine the challenges and opportunities that local species and organisms face. Another is testing water quality after pollution has occurred. These lessons facilitate awareness and empower the students to make conscious decisions about protecting the environment. “This program trilogy takes the students from the theoretical to the practical and shows them in very tangible and personal ways what the issues are and how they can actually make a difference in solving them,” explained teacher Jody Berman. “The hands-on aspect of this project was valuable to my everyday life because I have been able to take what I learned at school and use it in my garden at home,” added Jacob Ewert of Sunrise.

Friday Night Lights! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

couple months ago, South Plantation High School was selected as the winner of a joint community programming initiative, “Light Like the Pros”. After submitting an essay to demonstrate their need for a new sports lighting system, the Paladin Stadium was chosen due to the numerous limitations of its current system and its enthusiastic community that supports both athletics and academics. Although there were many deserving high schools in both Broward and Miami/Dade counties, the Miami Dolphins and Eaton, a power management company, presented South Plantation with a free state-ofthe-art Ephesus LED sports lighting and control system valued at more than $100,000. Miami Dolphins alumni Troy Drayton and Twan Russell along with mascot T.D. were on hand to surprise the students and staff with the news. “We are excited to provide the players and fans at Paladin Stadium with an Ephesus LED sports lighting system, like the one at Hard Rock Stadium, in time for the 2018 fall sports season,” said Mike Lorenz, president, Eaton’s Ephesus Lighting business. “We hope that by showcasing our innovative technology at Paladin Stadium, the entire South Florida sports community will see the many benefits of LED sports lighting, including superior control and dramatic energy savings.” Paladin Stadium also serves as the home field for Stranahan High School in Ft. Lauderdale, a school without a stadium, and as a result, the lights serve doubleduty during the football season. This high-usage has resulted in numerous fixtures being out and leaving dark spots on the playing surface. Due to other factors

such as weather delays, the system requires a cool down period, and forces the overscheduling of lights adding more stress on the system and wasting energy. “Congratulations to South Plantation High School for winning the ‘Light Like the Pros’ program,” said Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications and Community Affairs Jason Jenkins. “Eaton’s Ephesus LED Sports Lighting System will provide an excellent solution to better illuminate Paladin Stadium, extending the opportunity for South Plantation’s athletes and the community to practice and compete without limitations.” “South Plantation is so very appreciative to the Miami Dolphins and Eaton for selecting the Paladin family and Plantation Community as the recipient of these amazing lights! We are going to put these lights to good use, and this is a win for everybody,” exclaimed Mike Collins, South Plantation Athletic Director.

Never Too Young to Re-Right History BY BEVERLY PERKINS

n February, Seminole Middle School students got politically active during Black History Month. After studying about the historic Groveland case in social studies, using a book authored by sixth grade Seminole Ben Polsky, the ambitious group of 1200 students wrote postcards to members of the cabinet requesting expedited clemency review. These were delivered to the Governor and his cabinet just last month. Ben Polsky, a 10-year-old, was so inspired after learning about the Groveland Four: Walter Irvin, Samuel Shepard, Charles Greenlee, and Ernest Thomas. Although none of these four men are still living, members of their family are. The dedicated and determined student seeks to right the wrongs of history in order to make sense of the wrongs of today. During their lessons the Panthers also created fictional newspaper articles and envisioned and celebrated the aftermath of a successful pardon. At curriculum night, Ben Polsky was a featured speaker about Think Globally, Act Locally: The Groveland

Four. He received a standing ovation for his activism and efforts. A couple years ago Ben Polsky and his mother Nancy Polsky wrote “Re-Righting History: The Groveland Boys”. Their passionate story about the four innocent black youths found guilty and

sentenced for a terrible crime they did not commit created awareness of the forgotten tale so long ago. Their book inspired the students and parents to get involved and make a difference. “It’s never too late to do the right thing,” stated Ben Polsky. The fate of the Groveland Four generated a grassroots movement of support after it was featured

in the 2013 book Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “Devil in the Grove,” by Gilbert King. The families of the four black men who were wrongly accused of a horrific crime and then tortured, murdered, and unjustly imprisoned after one of the most grotesque racist episodes in state history have been waiting for a long overdue apology. “I walked into Ben’s room on the night of the Parkland shooting and overheard him leaving a message for Senator Rubio to do something about it. Ben saw firsthand how his Groveland activism resulted in political change in Tallahassee; he believes in his own power,” proudly stated Nancy Polsky. “And today more than ever, our young people need reminders and opportunities to participate - no, lead us - towards a more just and better version of our nation. Our youth can do something and can see the power of their positive political actions.”

MESSAGE FROM FIRE CHIEF

Watch the Water – Watch the Kids BY E. LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF

W

hile it may be a bit too early to think about opening your backyard pool, the hot weather is just around the corner. Summertime means backyard barbecues, sunbathing, and fun time in the pool. It is important to remember however, that drowning remains the leading cause of death among children in Florida. Every year dozens of children, in South Florida alone, lose their lives by drowning in the family’s backyard pool. Dozens more are critically and often permanently injured due to drowning. Yet this horrific tragedy is fully preventable, and prevention is easy. Drowning prevention messages can often be numerous and confusing. But it is the simplest solutions that provide the best return. This summer we are partnering with Plantation General Hospital to remind everyone that when it comes to pool safety, nothing replaces adult supervision. The message is a simple one. Just remember to “Watch the Water-Watch the Kids.” Anytime a child is near any body of water adult supervision must be present. This means a responsible adult MUST be at poolside all the time. And, the adult should not be distracted by texting, surfing the internet, Facebooking, or anything else that takes their attention away from the pool. If for some reason the adult must walk away, even for a moment, have the kids exit the pool. PFD Pete during an April Pools Day event reminding everyone to Anytime the pool is always have adult supervision when children are in or near water not being used, a properly installed pool barrier should be secured around it. Too frequently young children find their way into the backyard through an open or unlocked door and fall into the pool unexpectedly or while reaching for a toy. Remember, it only takes a moment for a tragedy to happen. During our often-hectic days it’s not uncommon for our children to slip from our sites, if only for a few seconds. Finally, everyone should learn CPR. The skills involved in CPR are simple and can help save a life. The American Heart Association and American Red Cross offer community CPR courses. Check with them for courses that are convenient for your schedule. Your neighbors at the Plantation Fire Department and Plantation General Hospital want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable swim season. Backyard pool tragedies are easily prevented. Remember to simply “Watch the Water-Watch the Kids.” For more information and safety tips, visit www.Plantation.org or Facebook.com/City of Plantation Fire Department.

Color Their World – Local Artist Donates Art Supplies BY BEVERLY PERKINS

C

heryl Eggleston wanted to give back to the community, especially to the children who are less fortunate. Throughout the years she has been painting, but it wasn’t until her retirement two years ago that she began to work as a full-time professional artist. The Plantation resident found the perfect way to combine her passion and love to help others, so she decided to donate art supplies to the Children’s Home Society (CHS) – Broward County. The organization, founded in 1902 has been providing a “family” for the children who have nowhere else to go. For over one hundred years, CHS has continued to grow and evolve to provide the right services and solutions to address the needs of children and families which are continuously changing throughout each decade. Their goal is to have children reach their full potential. Eggleston believes children in stressful situations can benefit by expressing themselves through art. The self-taught artist created “Kids Need Crayons”. Her donations to the organization are in the form of art supplies: plain paper, coloring books, crayons, and colored pencils.

“I feel children benefit by expressing their feelings through art. No pressure, no instruction, just give them the materials and let them do whatever moves them. There should be no need for them to explain

of coloring books. This type of experience helps them develop fine motor skills and patience.” Michelle Roman of CHS accepted the donation of 40 prepared packets. The packets were created with attention given to the needs of different age Michelle Roman (L) and groups. The children may use the packets at Cheryl Eggleston (R) the shelter and take them home with them when they leave. Eggleston is familiar with the Children’s Home Society as her late mother, Elizabeth Centofanti, used to sew and donate pajamas to the shelter. “We know how important it is to support facilities such as these and that there is always a need for any gifts that come their way,” added Eggleston. Roman graciously thanked Eggleston for the colorful gifts and spoke about the need for donations from the public to help shelters such as Children’s Home Society, and to help the children who find themselves in very stressful situations. Eggleston plans to donate a portion of her painting sales each year to chiltheir work,” says Eggleston. “A child’s creativity may dren in distress. be stifled if they feel their work will be judged good or bad. End School Shootings with Real Solutions Marjory Stoneman Douglas Senior, Richard Doan, Shares His Account of the Horrific Parkland Tragedy and Demands Action to Keep Schools Safe verybody looks forward to senior year. After three years of high school (some after just one or two), many people can’t wait to leave and head off to college. Personally, I was looking forward to prom, graduation and infamous senior year shenanigans. I had hopes and dreams of attending a university and embarking on a future career in finance. Preparing for graduation and college was all that was important to me, but within a matter of minutes, all of those beloved goals and aspirations vanished. It was Valentine’s Day. It was supposed to be a day of love and joy, and for most of the day, it was. Up until 2:20 p.m., when the fire alarm went off. I was in the newspaper room when it all happened. We followed the traditional protocol and walked to our designated evacuation zones. We were on our way downstairs when I saw kids running back inside. Teachers yelled at us to run as well. I ran as directed, but in the back of my mind, I thought it was just a drill. Ever since the school board has implemented stricter safety policies this year, there was a rumor going around that we’d have an active shooter drill on campus. For many of us, that’s what we thought it was. The teachers said it was a code red, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t all a drill. We rushed back to the newspaper room, shut the lights off, and huddled into the corner of the classroom. I heard sirens wailing and choppers echoing in the distance. Soon enough, we saw a tweet from the Coral Springs PD to stay away from Stoneman Douglas. That was

24 MONTH 28 APRIL 2018 20XX| |OURCITYPLANTATION.COM OURCITYMAGAZINES.COM

when we realized it was not a drill. It was real. Eventually, we transitioned to the classroom closet where we stayed for about an hour and a half. We were scared. We were worried. We were in disbelief. We followed the news as it unraveled online. We watched live streams and kept a close eye on Twitter. It was hot and cramped in the closet, but none of that mattered in this life-ordeath situation. We hear voices in the hallway. “Police reporting,” they said. It was multiple voices. Then with a faint rattling of what I presumed to be keys, our classroom door was opened. I recall someone asked if anyone was there. We didn’t move. We didn’t know who it was. It could’ve been the shooter for all we knew, but my teacher’s intuition told her otherwise. She opened the closet door to the three men in our room. At that moment, I didn’t know if I was going to be shot or be saved. Thankfully, it was a rescue mission. They were SWAT — heavily armed and heavily protected. Their flashlights shone upon our faces, and we were ordered to step out with our hands up. The SWAT team then secured our room and the building. Eventually, they escorted a large number of students and faculty from neighboring classrooms to our room. One hundred sixty-seven students and teachers in total gathered in this one room. Later, we were moved to the media center where we sat and were given directions about evacuation for a few minutes. Then with our hands up and tears streaking down our face, we fled the building and exited the school. I saw papers scattered all over Courtesy: Suzanna Barna

the floor along with Valentine’s Day flowers and stuffed animals. When we stepped out, our eyes met a sea of law enforcement, ambulances and media surrounding our school. I was in utter shock. This is my school. This all happened here. Initially, I was in complete disbelief. I didn’t process it all yet. I am probably still processing it. This is my hometown: Parkland, Florida. Marjory Stoneman Douglas is my school. This is supposed to be a safe place. Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Las Vegas. This is the stuff we hear on the news, but no one ever thought it could happen here. If a mass shooting like this can happen here, it can happen absolutely anywhere. I am frustrated. There were signs. As with any mass shootings or suicide, there were signs. Yet they were overlooked, and because of that, 17 beautiful and innocent lives were taken away too soon. As for my mom, she’s been through the Vietnam War as a young child, yet she says that nothing compares to what she felt this past

Wednesday. It may sound cliché, but this truly was a parent’s worst nightmare. There is no greater fear than not knowing whether your children are safe, whether they will make it out alive, whether you’ll ever be able to tell your child that you love them again. In all the chaos, I forgot to return my mother’s messages for an hour. She tells me that was the worst hour of her life as she feared for her boy, not knowing if she would ever see me again. We are taking our time to grieve and to pray. People from around the world send their thoughts and prayers to us, and for that, we are truly appreciative. But frankly, thoughts and prayers themselves don’t do much. We must turn our thoughts and prayers into action. Our community feels distraught yet invigorated. The media is here. The whole world is watching, and this is our chance to be heard and make a difference. That way, something like this will not happen anywhere else. No one deserves to feel the

Far-right conservatives argue that we students are in fact not students, but crisis actors, travelling to scenes of tragedies to push some liberal anti-gun agenda. We wish we are acting. We wish this is all a hoax. We wish these deep emotions of misery, anger and frustration aren’t real. But it’s not. We are students. This is real and we

torment that we are experiencing right now. No one deserves to lose a loved one this way, and we are taking steps to ensure that this never happens again. Mass shootings in America aren’t anything new. Gun violence isn’t something rare, but it definitely cannot be something we get used to. Here in Parkland, we are turning our mess into a message and our pain into power. We are the voices for change. This is our moment to be heard. The media is here now, and they’ll probably be here for the next few days or weeks. But after that, they’ll be gone, and our story will probably just become a passing memory. So the time to act is now. My classmates and I are just children. The people in D.C. are the adults, and they must step up and do their jobs – protect and preserve this nation that we all hold so dear. Let our voices reach the legislative offices up in D.C. and get our congressmen and women to act. My friends are dead. Children are dead. Blood is spilled on the floor of our classrooms. We must do everything we can to ensure that Marjory Stoneman Douglas is the last school to suffer from a mass shooting. This isn’t an issue of red vs. blue. This is an issue about life and human suffering. It is rather a moral issue that can be solved through political action. Legislators and the people in office must do all they can to preserve life and protect the people of

Through bipartisanship and working across the political aisle, I believe it can happen. I believe in compromise. Practically everyone recognizes that there is a need for change. Though people have their own views on how to enact such change, there is nothing wrong with a difference of opinions. Such divergence can in fact foster intelligent discussion and the exploration of all possible options, but we must let all viewpoints be heard and acknowledged. I believe most feel we need to pass some common-sense gun laws. I believe we can agree that we must keep guns out of the hands of those who show signs of malicious intent. I believe we can agree upon widening the information stored in background check databases and increasing restrictions on the acquisition of firearms for the mentally ill. From there, we’ll work upwards to ensure the safety of our nation’s children without sacrificing the liberties the foundation of America grants us. Change is new and change can be daunting. Not all changes work but doing nothing isn’t going to solve anything. Let us set aside our political differences to work together. Let us initiate change for the common cause of the preservation of life. Let us use our hindsight as foresight and shape our way to a better future. It didn’t happen after Columbine in 1999, but it will happen now, and the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas will be the ones behind it. It is all to save a life – maybe even 17, hopefully more.

Beth and Steve Grossberg took a little trip south to Cuba. During their visit they went to the popular spot of Viñales. Tourists love its stunning luscious landscape views, but the quiet little town is best known for its tobacco plantations. Most of the premium tobacco grown here is one of Cuba’s finest exports. However, the Grossberg’s managed to import a little piece of their hometown as they took a photo with Our City Plantation.
