Remember, November Is Pancreas Cancer Awareness Month

Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Dr. Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immuno-radio therapy to treat advanced-stage cancer patients worldwide after they have stopped responding to the standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.

With over 33 years of experience performing pancreatic surgeryn in south Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has long been held to be the only reproducible therapy for a cure. In reality, surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases.

traveled to benefit from this groundbreaking treatment by Dr. Donoway, which is FDA-approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, anorectal and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA-approved guidelines.

Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation much sooner.

Dr. Donoway Has The Largest International Nanoknife Experience in Treating Pancreatic Cancer.

Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic cancer. The treatment history has been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 13% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, we’re all confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”

Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.

Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in using pancreatic NanoKnife for the past 15 years, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients worldwide have

Dr. Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/ IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging, and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over 13 years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past without IRE, they would have lived a little over a year; so this technique opens a new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Dr. Donoway presented his results in pancreatic ablation and ablation margin status at the recent Specturm 2023 and the American Pancreatic Association meeting.

It is more important than ever to be thankful this Thanksgiving season. The contentious election has bombarded each of us with messages about how dire the state of the country is, how things are going downhill, and how others are making things so much worse.

Understanding how good we have it requires a bit of perspective. Social media algorithms combined with the political environment can make our present-day problems seem insurmountable. The reality is we are living such fantastic lives that our great-grandparents wouldn’t be able to imagine them.

It is easy to be pessimistic. There are bloody wars in Europe and the Middle East, major storms have hit Florida and the Southeast, and, many live in despair. These challenges may be with us for some time but will be overcome. We have already come so far, so fast.

100 years ago, the life expectancy at birth was about 60 years; today it is 77. Antibiotics did not exist. There was about one vehicle on the road per 100 people. Two in three homes lacked electricity; six out of seven had no bathtub. A typical person completed about eight years of school; segregation was rampant across the southern U.S., and the most common job in America was a farm worker. And, this was during the “Roaring Twenties,” a period of relative excess. Things we take for granted today, like air conditioning, the internet, air travel, television, and higher education simply didn’t exist.

Taking stock of all we have today makes us incredibly thankful. We live in comfort in a beautiful community carved out of a swamp. Our children are relatively safe to pursue their passions. There are numerous educational opportunities for almost everyone. Each of us carries access to all the world’s knowledge in our pocket. Our community is an incredible melting pot of cultures. The necessities of life are almost universally provided for.

We are thankful for all we have.

Thanksgiving Day

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you gather with family and loved ones to celebrate each other and give thanks for all that we have. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them.

NSU University School student Supports NICU Families with much needed items

Ariana Intsiful, a compassionate 12th-grade student at NSU University School, has spearheaded a remarkable initiative called NICU Literacy & Love, bringing comfort to families with newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at HCA Florida University Hospital. As the President of Community Engagement for USchool’s HOSA: Future Health Professionals chapter, Ariana led her peers in organizing a donation drive throughout September, collecting over 200 much-needed items such as blankets, slippers, pillows, and handheld mirrors.

The project, aimed at easing the stress faced by NICU families, was a collaborative effort. With support from the USchool Community Service Coordinator, teachers, and HOSA members, Ariana placed donation boxes around the school to encourage

student involvement. The collected items will be distributed to families staying in the NICU, offering them comfort during a time of great emotional and financial strain.

Ariana’s inspiration for NICU Literacy & Love was sparked in July 2023 when she visited the NICU at HCA Florida University Hospital as part of a medical immersion summer camp. During her visit, she saw firsthand the challenges that NICU families endure, particularly the difficult balance between caring for their ill newborns and managing financial pressures.

“Families in the NICU are already going through an incredibly difficult time,” Ariana said. “Through this initiative, I hope to help alleviate some of that burden by providing items that make their stay a little easier, so they can focus on their babies without worrying about additional expenses.”

In addition to the donation drive, NICU Literacy & Love creates care baskets containing baby supplies, books, and other essentials to help families. The project also promotes early literacy through reading programs designed for NICU babies, reflecting Ariana’s belief that even the smallest gestures can make a big difference in the lives of these families.

Ariana’s dedication to community service and her passion for supporting NICU families have left a lasting impact, and she hopes to continue expanding her efforts. Through NICU Literacy & Love, Ariana is driven to provide care and support to even more families in need, demonstrating her determination to make a meaningful difference.

PLANTATION UPDATE

ew Signs Direct Visitors: Getting around our City Hall complex should be easier: we have placed wayfinding signs to help those visiting e buildings.

So many people were entering City Hall looking for a building permit, for example. We now clearly direct patrons to the police station, the development services building (where planning and zoning, building and engineering departments are) and our main City Hall where you’ll find Council Chambers, utility billing, city clerk, human resources, finance, procurement, and administration.

You’ll see more wayfinding signs farther away from City Hall; we wanted to start close by first. The yellow-on-black sign format

I received the Environmental Champion Awards from the Broward Sierra Group recently.

In the last two years, Plantation restored its Tree City USA status and added a community garden. A pilot composting program is in the works. I also committed to the environment by signing the Southeast Florida Climate Compact Pledge and the Mayor’s

Councilmember Jennifer Andreu was also honored.

We have a new mural at the recently renamed Kingsley Smith Park. We partnered with the Business for the Arts of Broward to bring an iconic One Love mural by a renowned artist Cey Adams to Plantation. If you haven’t seen it

The City Council approved our budget for Oct. 1 through

A big part of the budget is supported by your property taxes. Our millage rate has been 5.8 since 2019 and I am pleased that once again we were able to dedicate funding to the improvements you told us you’d like to see without increasing this rate. When you get your tax bill, keep in mind that approximately 29 percent of it goes to the City of Plantation; 35 percent of your bill is the School Board taxes and 27 percent is for Broward County expenditures.

The city’s total budget consists of multiple funds that add up to over $270 million. Most city services and operations are covered

The city celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Lauderdale West. A neighborhood for those 55 and older and home to about 2,000 residents, Lauderdale West has done a stellar job maintaining itself with an all-volunteer board (rather than a management company), where board members take on responsibilities for architectural review, insurance, pest control

The neighborhood is kept “clean and green” by its residents, who are dedicated to looking out for each other – as they have from their very beginning to this golden anniversary year.

DEBUNKING COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT WILLS

Did you know that the majority of Americans do not have a will? It's true! The number of US households with a will has been steadily declining. But estate planning isn't just for the wealthy, older adults, or married couples; it's beneficial for everyone. Let's bust some common myths about wills and estate plans:

Myth #1: Wills can be used to avoid probate.

I like to say that a will is a “Dear Judge Letter!” Many people believe that having a will allows them to avoid probate. However, even if you have a will, your estate may very likely go through probate if any asset does not have a joint owner or beneficiary designation. Probate is costly and delays distributions to your loved ones but is necessary to ensure that your estate is administered accurately and legally. To avoid probate, consider using a trust-based estate plan, which may very well avoid probate. As the saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Myth #2: You cannot use a will for tax planning.

The certainty of death and taxes, as famously noted by Benjamin Franklin, is not quite as certain as the taxes you might owe at the time of your death. Estate taxes, sometimes called death taxes, are applied to assets (your money and property) that you leave to others when you pass on, but the threshold net worth value when these taxes kick in is very high. If you pass In 2024, you will not owe federal estate and lifetime gift taxes until your taxable estate is over $13.61 million, per person. However, the federal estate tax exemption amount is set to decrease sharply at the start of 2026 and revert to pre-2017 levels that are around half of what they are now. This anticipated decrease in the exemption amount might justify employing advanced estate planning strategies now, ahead of the 2026 sunset. Remember, "A penny saved is a penny earned."

Myth #3: Creating a will is cheaper than creating a trust.

Creating a basic will might be cheaper than creating a basic trust, but it is not an apples-to apples comparison. Trusts tend to be more complex and therefore more expensive to prepare. However, both wills and trusts can contain similar provisions that require a comparable amount of time to draft properly. Consider the costs of not having an estate plan or having a plan that falls short of your goals. Probate Administration can be costly, and your family will have to bear these expenses later.

Estate planning is not an area where it pays to cut corners. As the old adage goes, "You get what you pay for."

And Beware: A will does not determine who will make financial and medical decisions for you if you are alive but unable to make them yourself due to illness, injury, or age-related decline. As our population continues to age, many folks will leave their autonomy subject to the decisions of the state or county without proper estate planning.

THE CONFIDENCE HACK EVERY PARENT NEEDS: MARTIAL ARTS

Martial arts training offers a powerful way to build confidence in kids, especially through disciplines like Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). These styles go beyond simply teaching techniques—they provide kids with real-world experiences that foster resilience, perseverance, and self-esteem.

One of the key reasons Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA are so effective at boosting confidence is the way they train kids in practical, live scenarios. In these disciplines, kids engage in sparring (in Muay Thai) and rolling (in BJJ), where they apply what they’ve learned against resisting opponents. This kind of training puts them under pressure and forces them to think and act quickly, helping them gain confidence in their ability to handle difficult situations.

Of course, not every sparring match or rolling session ends in success. Sometimes, kids will face opponents who are more skilled, and they may not achieve the results they want. This is where the true value of these martial arts shines

through. Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA teach kids that failure is part of the process. They learn to get back up, try again, and keep pushing forward. This cycle of effort, challenge, and perseverance helps kids understand that setbacks are temporary, and that success comes from continually trying and improving. Over time, this builds a sense of resilience and self-confidence that extends beyond martial arts and into other aspects of life.

While traditional martial arts often focus on learning forms or sequences of movements— and certainly do teach valuable self-defense skills—Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA emphasize live training and practical application. In these disciplines, kids aren’t just learning techniques in a controlled environment; they’re testing those techniques in real, dynamic situations. This kind of training helps them develop not only effective combat skills but also the mental toughness to handle pressure and uncertainty.

The confidence kids gain from training in Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA isn’t just about physical prowess. It comes from knowing they’ve faced

challenges, worked through failures, and earned their achievements through hard work. This mindset of perseverance and resilience becomes a foundation for handling difficulties in all areas of life, making martial arts a truly transformative experience for kids.

KEEPING PETS SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

As the holiday season approaches, it’s important to remember that while our furry friends may share in the festive atmosphere, we need to prioritize their safety amidst the feasts and decorations.

Awareness of Toxic Foods

Many holiday staples can be harmful to pets. Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and macadamia nuts are just a few examples of foods that can pose serious health risks. Make sure these items are stored out of reach, and consider creating a designated area in the kitchen where pets aren’t allowed during cooking and serving times.

Safe Holiday Treats

If you want to include your pets in the festivities, opt for pet-safe treats. There are many healthy, delicious options available in pet stores or you can make homemade treats that will delight your furry companions without the risk of harmful ingredients.

Preventing Access

After the holiday meal, it’s crucial to promptly store leftovers and dispose of scraps to avoid any temptation for your pets. Securely closed containers can help prevent curious noses from getting into dangerous foods.

Guest Awareness

As you welcome guests into your home, be sure to inform them about your pet's dietary restrictions. Encourage visitors not to share their plates with your pets, as even a small morsel can lead to gastrointestinal distress.

Decorations and Plants

Holiday decorations add to the festive atmosphere, but some can be hazardous

to pets. Plants like poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly can be toxic if ingested. Opt for pet-friendly decorations and keep potentially dangerous plants out of reach.

Safe Spaces

With gatherings often creating a bustling environment, it's wise to designate a quiet space for your pets. This area should have their favorite toys and bedding, providing them a safe retreat from the excitement.

Emergency Preparedness

Accidents can happen, so be prepared. Keep the contact information for your veterinarian and the nearest emergency animal clinic easily accessible in case of accidental ingestion or other emergencies.

Mindful Serving Practices

It’s easy to indulge our pets during the holidays, but moderation is key. Even safe treats can lead to digestive issues if overdone,

so stick to appropriate portion sizes.

Engaging Activities

Include your pets in holiday fun without involving food! Consider making homemade toys, or setting up games that let them participate without the risk of eating harmful foods.

Health Checks Post-Holidays

After the festivities, keep an eye on your pets for any unusual behavior or symptoms. Changes in diet or stress from the holiday hustle can affect their well-being. By taking these precautions, you can ensure a joyful and safe holiday season for both you and your pets. Let’s celebrate together, keeping our furry friends happy and healthy!
