Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Dr. Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immuno-radio therapy to treat advanced-stage cancer patients worldwide after they have stopped responding to the standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.
With over 33 years of experience performing pancreatic surgeryn in south Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has long been held to be the only reproducible therapy for a cure. In reality, surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases.
traveled to benefit from this groundbreaking treatment by Dr. Donoway, which is FDA-approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, anorectal and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA-approved guidelines.
Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation much sooner.
Dr. Donoway Has The Largest International Nanoknife Experience in Treating Pancreatic Cancer.
Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic cancer. The treatment history has been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 13% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, we’re all confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”
Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.
Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in using pancreatic NanoKnife for the past 15 years, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients worldwide have
Dr. Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/ IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging, and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over 13 years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past without IRE, they would have lived a little over a year; so this technique opens a new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”
Dr. Donoway presented his results in pancreatic ablation and ablation margin status at the recent Specturm 2023 and the American Pancreatic Association meeting.

It is more important than ever to be thankful this Thanksgiving season. The contentious election has bombarded each of us with messages about how dire the state of the country is, how things are going downhill, and how others are making things so much worse.
Understanding how good we have it requires a bit of perspective. Social media algorithms combined with the political environment can make our present-day problems seem insurmountable. The reality is we are living such fantastic lives that our great-grandparents wouldn’t be able to imagine them.
It is easy to be pessimistic. There are bloody wars in Europe and the Middle East, major storms have hit Florida and the Southeast, and, many live in despair. These challenges may be with us for some time but will be overcome. We have already come so far, so fast.
100 years ago, the life expectancy at birth was about 60 years; today it is 77. Antibiotics did not exist. There was about one vehicle on the road per 100 people. Two in three homes lacked electricity; six out of seven had no bathtub. A typical person completed about eight years of school; segregation was rampant across the southern U.S., and the most common job in America was a farm worker. And, this was during the “Roaring Twenties,” a period of relative excess. Things we take for granted today, like air conditioning, the internet, air travel, television, and higher education simply didn’t exist.
Taking stock of all we have today makes us incredibly thankful. We live in comfort in a beautiful community carved out of a swamp. Our children are relatively safe to pursue their passions. There are numerous educational opportunities for almost everyone. Each of us carries access to all the world’s knowledge in our pocket. Our community is an incredible melting pot of cultures. The necessities of life are almost universally provided for.
We are thankful for all we have.

DEBUNKING COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT WILLS
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
Did you know that the majority of Americans do not have a will? It's true! The number of US households with a will has been steadily declining. But estate planning isn't just for the wealthy, older adults, or married couples; it's beneficial for everyone. Let's bust some common myths about wills and estate plans:
Myth #1: Wills can be used to avoid probate.
I like to say that a will is a “Dear Judge Letter!” Many people believe that having a will allows them to avoid probate. However, even if you have a will, your estate may very likely go through probate if any asset does not have a joint owner or beneficiary designation. Probate is costly and delays distributions to your loved ones but is necessary to ensure that your estate is administered accurately and legally. To avoid probate, consider using a trust-based estate plan, which may very well avoid probate. As the saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
Myth #2: You cannot use a will for tax planning.
The certainty of death and taxes, as famously noted by Benjamin Franklin, is not quite as certain as the taxes you might owe at the time of your death. Estate taxes, sometimes called death taxes, are applied to assets (your money and property) that you leave to others when you pass on, but the threshold net worth value when these taxes kick in is very high. If you pass In 2024, you will not owe federal estate and lifetime gift taxes until your taxable estate is over $13.61 million, per person. However, the federal estate tax exemption amount is set to decrease sharply at the start of 2026 and revert to pre-2017 levels that are around half of what they are now. This anticipated decrease in the exemption amount might justify employing advanced estate planning strategies now, ahead of the 2026 sunset. Remember, "A penny saved is a penny earned."
Myth #3: Creating a will is cheaper than creating a trust.
Creating a basic will might be cheaper than creating a basic trust, but it is not an apples-to apples comparison. Trusts tend to be more complex and therefore more expensive to prepare. However, both wills and trusts can contain similar provisions that require a comparable amount of time to draft properly. Consider the costs of not having an estate plan or having a plan that falls short of your goals. Probate Administration can be costly, and your family will have to bear these expenses later.
Estate planning is not an area where it pays to cut corners. As the old adage goes, "You get what you pay for."
And Beware: A will does not determine who will make financial and medical decisions for you if you are alive but unable to make them yourself due to illness, injury, or age-related decline. As our population continues to age, many folks will leave their autonomy subject to the decisions of the state or county without proper estate planning.
To discuss your estate planning goals and how we can help you meet them, please reach out and schedule a consultation. Let's ensure your legacy is protected and your loved ones are taken care of.

HOW TO ENJOY HOLIDAY MEALS WHILE AVOIDING KITCHEN HAZARDS
By Todd Draizin, District Chief Weston Dept. of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services
As the holiday season approaches, the kitchen becomes the heart of the home, where families come together to cook, share meals, and create lasting memories. However, without proper precautions, it can also be a space where accidents happen. In fact, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries. By following a few simple safety tips, you can ensure that your kitchen remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
Unattended cooking is the number one cause of kitchen fires. Whether you're simmering, baking, or frying, it's essential to stay in the kitchen while using the stove or oven. If you must leave, turn off the burner or set a timer to remind yourself to check on the food. If you're tired or distracted, it's better to avoid cooking until you can focus fully on the task.
Clutter near the stove can quickly turn dangerous. Ensure flammable items like dish towels, paper towels, and potholders are kept away from heat sources. Keeping your cooking space clean and organized to reduce the risk of fire. Practice safe cooking techniques to reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, and fire. Use a lid or splash guard when frying to prevent grease from splattering, and turn pot handles inward to avoid knocking them over. Keep a three-foot kid and pet-free zone around any cooking spaces. Be sure to regularly clean the oven, as grease or food buildup can ignite.
Even with precautions, accidents can happen. If a small grease fire occurs, do not use water to extinguish it. Instead, smother the flames with a lid, baking sheet, or use a fire extinguisher designed for kitchen fires if you know how to use it. Be sure to test smoke alarms monthly to ensure they are working properly.
If cooking is a part of your family activities, be sure to stay alert while cooking, practice safe cooking techniques, keep your kitchen organized, and establish a three-foot “hot zone” around cooking areas to help prevent accidents and fires. Make kitchen safety a priority in your home to protect your loved ones while enjoying your time together around food.
THE BOTTOM LINE: PRICE IS NOW THE MOST CRITICAL FACTOR
By Rose Sklar
Why Has the Focus Shifted?
Several key factors have caused this shift from location-centric to price-driven real estate:
1. Interest Rates
Rising interest rates have affected buyers' purchasing power. Mortgage rates have climbed from historic lows, and as a result, the same buyer who could once afford a higher-priced home is now more budget-conscious. Even in prime locations, if the price doesn't fit within their new financing limits, buyers may look elsewhere or negotiate hard on price.
2. Housing Affordability
Housing affordability has been a growing concern across the country, with property prices surging in the past few years. In certain markets, homes have become unaffordable for a significant portion of buyers, leading them to prioritize price over other factors like location or amenities. Buyers are now willing to compromise on neighborhood, square footage, or even condition if the price is right.
3. Slower Appreciation Rates
In the past, many buyers banked on rapid property appreci ation to justify paying a premium for a desirable location. But as appreciation rates have slowed in many areas, paying top dollar in a “hot” neighborhood no longer guarantees a quick return on investment. This has led buyers to be more discerning about price, looking for better value even if it means choosing a less desirable location.
4. Data Transparency
Today’s buyers are more informed than ever. With easy access to online tools and market data, they can see comparable sales, price histories, and market trends in real time. This transparency means sellers can no longer rely on location alone to justify higher prices—buyers are aware of what constitutes fair market value and will negotiate or walk away if a property is overpriced.
5. Shifts in Buyer
Priorities
In the post-pandemic world, lifestyle needs have shifted. More people are working remotely, making proximity to urban centers less important for many buyers. Additionally, buyers may prioritize larger homes or outdoor spaces over being close to work or city amenities, making price the most important factor in their decision.
Sellers: The Price Is Key to Your Strategy
For sellers, this new market reality means one thing—price positioning is more critical than ever. Homes priced too high, regardless of location, will likely sit on the market for extended periods with minimal interest. If a home doesn’t sell within the first few weeks, it risks becoming “stale,” leading to further price reductions, fewer offers, and diminished leverage.
To succeed in today’s market, sellers must focus on pricing their homes realistically. Overpricing in hopes of landing a lucky buyer who will overpay is no longer a viable strategy. Instead,
sellers should work closely with their real estate agents to analyze market trends, review comparable sales, and understand buyer behavior in their area.
Buyers: Be Ready to Act on the Right Price
For buyers, this price-driven market offers opportunities. While location is still an important consideration, finding value and negotiating a fair price is key to landing a good deal. Savvy buyers will:
• Do their homework on comparable properties and recent sales to understand what constitutes a fair price.
• Look beyond the traditional “best” neighborhoods if prices are too high—up-and-coming areas or homes slightly further from prime locations may offer the best value.
• Act quickly when they find a well-priced home. Well-priced properties will likely attract multiple offers, and the competition can be fierce.
The Bottom Line: Price Is Now the Most Critical Factor
While “location, location, location” still holds some truth—after all, you can’t move home to a better spot—the real estate market of 2024 is defined by price sensitivity. In this environment, whether you’re buying or selling, understanding, analyzing, and acting on pricing trends is the key to success.

APASSION & MOTIVATION: KEY DRIVERS FOR
SENIOR YEAR ACHIEVEMENT
By Dr. Katya Pizarro, Founder, ESL & Higher Education
s parents and educators guide students through the challenges of adolescence, particularly during the senior year, cultivating a strong and growth-oriented mindset is essential for their success. Two key elements in this process are motivation and passion. Motivation is the drive to achieve goals, while passion is a deep, intrinsic enthusiasm for what one does. Passion fuels a desire to learn and grow, making both factors critical for development. Strategies to Foster Intrinsic Motivation:
• Autonomy: Encourage students to take ownership of their learning by allowing them to choose projects, topics, or study methods that interest them.
• Goal Setting: Help students set both short-term and long-term personal goals. This provides direction and something to strive for.
• Recognition of Effort: Focus on acknowledging effort and progress, not just out-
comes. This reinforces a sense of value and motivates students to keep trying.
• Encourage Curiosity: Foster a culture of inquiry where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring topics that intrigue them.
As seniors apply to universities, choosing a career path based on passion can be one of the most fulfilling decisions they make.
Points to Consider:
• Personal Fulfillment: Pursuing a passion means engaging in work that excites and inspires. When you love what you do, it rarely feels like "work," and you're more likely to stay motivated and committed.
• Long-Term Success: Passion drives dedication and resilience. When challenges arise, your love for the field will help you push through, leading to greater success in your career.
• Unique Perspectives: Choosing a path aligned with your interests allows you to bring unique perspectives to the table. This diversity of thought can lead to
innovation and fresh ideas, helping you stand out in your field.
• Lifelong Learning: Passion often sparks a desire for continuous learning. You’ll be more inclined to seek new experiences, skills, and knowledge, enriching both your career and personal growth. Together, motivation and passion form a powerful synergy. Encouraging seniors to deeply explore their interests and consider how these can translate into career pathways can lead to a more meaningful and rewarding university experience and long-term achievement.

The Power of Imagination on the Golf Course
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
While some golfers have more athletic ability than others, every person can benefit from using mental skills to improve their lives and their golf games. Some of the organizational skills for quality of life and improved golf are: goal setting, making good conscious choices, adopting positive attitudes and beliefs, relaxation techniques, decision making, and enjoying life/golf in the moment.
Every time you repeat a limiting belief such as one of these, you give it more power in your mind. In golf, as in life, what you think is what you create. Begin to question your beliefs. Is this what you really want to create? Use your awesome power of imagination to practice in your mind what you really want to happen. When you hear yourself reiterating a negative thought from your past, change the thought in your mind to a positive one. Golfers play golf because it is a challenge. Challenge yourself to change your beliefs and behavior to achieve the success you desire. Use the feeling that comes up as a cue for you to know whether your concerns are under your control, or out of your control. If you are worried about people or course conditions that you cannot control, replace your limiting thoughts with positive, constructive ones.
For example, if you are anxious on the first tee and usually miss your tee shot because people are watching you, change your thinking to: “I can let go of everything outside of me by letting it become
fuzzy. I can focus clearly on seeing my target. I feel my swing tempo. I concentrate on my pre-shot routine to prepare my mind. My first tee shot is easy because I use the club in my bag with the biggest head. It is easy. I can tee it up and sweep through it. I love to hit the first shot of the day.”
To reinforce these thoughts, you can prepare in advance by using mental imagery. Begin by putting yourself in a relaxed state by breathing deeply and releasing all mental and physical tension from your body. Create in detail in your mind the first hole. Mentally create the fairway, trees, bunkers, and yourself on the first tee. Notice that you are affirming your good tee shot with the messages above. Observe yourself breathing deeply to become relaxed and centered. See yourself going through your physical and mental pre-shot routine. See yourself hitting your very best tee ball (from your past experience) by visualizing and feeling your own smooth, easy, effortless swing. See the ball land on the fairway where you planned. Feel the emotion of happiness and success.
Your feelings indicate what you need to notice about yourself. Become a better player by monitoring your negative thoughts that make you uneasy, anxious or tense. Know that these thoughts sabotage your performance. Use your mental energies to focus on the things within your control. You only have control over yourself because you are all you will ever have for certain.

IMAGINE YOUR DAY WITHOUT GLASSES OR CONTACTS
By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician
Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) is a revolutionary non-surgical procedure that eliminates the need for daytime glasses or contact lenses. You just wear the specially fitted lenses at bedtime. They improve your vision by gently reshaping your cornea while you sleep, like Invisalign for your eyes. When you awake, you will have clear, sharp, natural vision for your waking hours. It is FDA approved for children as well as adults.
Ortho-K is a great choice for anyone who wants to see clearly without daytime glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. It’s also perfect for people with lifestyles where glasses or contacts may be inconvenient, like athletes, and people with allergies or dry eye. Ortho-K is a fantastic alternative for teenagers since LASIK is not recommended for anyone under 21 years of age or for those who are not stable in prescription. In addition, Ortho-K has been clinically proven to slow down or even stop the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children.
This is a safe and effective alternative treatment to LASIK that can correct near-sightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism,
and presbyopia (blurred near vision when you’re over 40 years old). Children are great candidates for Ortho-K.
The number of children that are becoming myopic (nearsighted) has been growing rapidly over the last 25 years. The rapid increase is due in part to children spending more time studying, reading, and using the computer and handheld devices.
When a person cannot see clearly, it is because their eye is too long, or too short, or the surface is misshaped. These images fail to reach or focus on the retina. This produces blurred or distorted vision. In order to create a therapeutic lens, the surface of your eyes is mapped using a high-tech instrument called a corneal topographer. The Ortho-K lens is then custom designed specifically for your eye and its unique visual problems. Dr. Therrien specializes in the design and fitting of advanced custom Ortho-K lenses.
It can take up to two weeks to achieve excellent vision. However, some people achieve this in as little as one day. The speed depends on your initial prescription. Also, Ortho-K is non-invasive and completely reversible.
▸ Call today to schedule your Ortho-K consultation and wake up every morning seeing clearly without the need for daytime glasses or contact lenses.
Impingement Syndromes IN DANCERS
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
Pain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes Rest, Physical Therapy, and Anti-Inflammatory Medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with Arthroscopic Surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed.
Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle
joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical Therapy and a short course of Anti-Inflammatory Medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and Arthroscopic Surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases, a
small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing with proper treatment!

FISCAL YEAR 2025 BUDGET
By City Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie
The Fiscal Year 2025 budgets for the City of Weston, the Indian Trace Development District, and the Bonaventure Development District were unanimously approved on September 30, 2024.
Each year, the annual budget is one of the most critical responsibilities we undertake as a Commission. We work closely with the City Manager and staff through numerous meetings and workshops and ultimately come together to approve a budget that funds the city's services and projects for the upcoming fiscal year, which runs from October 1, 2024, through September 30, 2025. Weston residents can look forward to the seventh consecutive year without an increase in the ad valorem millage rate. Weston continues to maintain the lowest ad valorem millage rate of all municipalities in Broward County at 3.3464 mills, a distinction held since 1996.
As a resident, you can expect several exciting developments
• Arts, cultural and recreation programs will continue at their current levels;
• Planned capital projects for Fiscal Year 2025 include installing artificial turf fields at Vista Park, sidewalk construction on Blatt Boulevard, shade structures in Bonaventure Park, pedestrian safety improvements on Emerald Estates Drive, stormwater enhancements in Harbour Court, refurbishment of pavement markings, and design work for new courts and the relocation of the Regional Park maintenance yard. There will also be streetlight circuit replacements, traffic signage rehabilitation, and the design of the Vista Park indoor recreation complex.
• The acquisition of a Fire Rescue ladder/platform vehicle aligned with our ten-year replacement program.
• Debt-funded projects for this year will include roadway resurfacing, intersection improvements at South Post Road and Manatee Isles, and construction improvements at Windmill Ranch Park. Grant-funded projects will cover the design of Saddle Club Road, the Regional Park north walking nature trail, waterway and drainage rehabilitation, and restoration efforts. Surtax-funded projects starting in FY 2025 will include improvements to Indian Trace Road and bike and pedestrian enhancements along Weston Road.
If you are interested in digging deeper into the budget, I urge you to take a closer look at our City’s future. The full budget is available on our website at WestonFL.org

SW RANCHES UPDATE
By Mayor Steve Breitkreuz
One of the most critical issues currently facing Southwest Ranches is the potential for an incinerator being placed just outside the borders of Southwest Ranches. This is a critical issue not only for the Ranches but for the surrounding communities as well. I have been very proud of the Ranches taking the lead on this issue and working to ensure that incineration is not a part of our future as a Town or overall community.
Specifically, we have created a Town Zero Waste Board which helps lead the way in the County for us to show that not only don’t we want the incinerator near out community, but we also are willing to lead by example that recycling is a better option. Also, we have been working closely with the Countywide Broward Zero Waste Task Force to communicate the benefits of Zero Waste versus incineration. These have been grassroots efforts encouraged and nurtured by myself as Mayor and also the full Town Council.
Finally, we have been an active and leading participant in the Solid Waste Authority Board. This is the Countywide board that is actually developing the recommendations for Broward County and deciding if incineration will be part of this plan or not. I was selected to be on the Executive Board by my peers. This Executive Board is the working group, with the assistance of professionals in this field, that is developing the recommended plan. I have been developing a consensus among the members for solutions other than incineration. As long as I am mayor, I will continue this work. Otherwise, the municipalities on this board will select a replacement that will most likely not include the Ranches.
So, it is exciting to see that we are making this progress and I encourage you to join and support this effort.
As always, I am sincerely thankful for the opportunity to serve the residents of our Town as your Mayor. It is truly a blessing and an honor.
CANINE NUTRITION
How Do I Choose a Dog Food?
Ahigh-quality, complete and balanced diet is important for the health and longevity of your dog. Among other benefits, a proper diet helps build strong bones, promotes healthy gums and teeth, protects immune function, and results in a lustrous haircoat. Unlike cats, which are carnivores (meaning that they must eat meat), dogs are omnivores, meaning that they can eat meat and plants as their primary food sources.
A large number of dog foods are available at pet supply stores, so selecting a dog food can be daunting. How do you find a food that’s right for your dog? Start by asking your veterinarian the following: “Which food will meet the particular needs of my pet?” and “Which brand(s) do you recommend?”
Most pet foods are created for different life stages, including puppy, maintenance, or senior diets. Within these life stages are even more specific categories. For example, if you own a Saint Bernard puppy, you’ll need to feed a puppy food for large-breed dogs. Large-breed puppy foods are specially formulated to meet the special requirements of large-breed puppies Before purchasing a dog food, look for a statement on the label that verifies that the food underwent AAFCO feeding trials. This means that the food was tested on animals according to guidelines from the Association of American Feed Control Officials. A label that says the food meets AAFCO standards simply means that a chemical analysis of the food appears to be complete and balanced, but the food has not been tested on animals. Because some nutrients may not be digestible when fed to animals, the feeding trial statement is a better indication of the nutritional adequacy of the food.
Do Certain Diseases Require Special Foods?
Nutrition can help slow the progression, or manage the signs, of many diseases. For dogs with kidney disease, for example, diets lower in protein have been shown to help slow disease progression. Foods with limited or hydrolyzed proteins can help reduce the itching and scratching in many allergic dogs. For dogs with osteoarthritis, many diets now contain higher levels of glucosamine and antioxidants to help reduce pain and inflammation.
By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
Most diets that are designed for a specific disease are prescription diets and are only available through veterinarians. If your pet has a disease or condition, consult your veterinarian for nutritional advice.
Is a Homemade or Raw Diet Okay to Feed?
The advantage of homemade diets is that they can be tailored to the specific needs of your dog. However, most homemade diets found in books or on the Internet can be too vague or too complex, and ingredient substitutions or alterations may result in a diet that is nutritionally deficient or unbalanced or is even toxic. If you really want to provide your dog with a homemade diet, it’s best to work under the guidance of a veterinary nutritionist to ensure that the diet you prepare is complete and balanced for your dog.
What Do I Need to Know About Table Scraps and Treats?
The biggest problem with table scraps and treats is that they add unnecessary calories that can make your pet overweight. Pet obesity often leads to diabetes, increased blood pressure, and orthopedic problems, all of which can reduce your dog’s life span. If your dog is overweight, consult your veterinarian about a diet and exercise plan to get your dog back to a healthy weight. In addition, many dogs are allergic to common foods, such as wheat and chicken, resulting in problems such as itchy, infected ears and skin infections.

IVETERANS & MILITARY FAMILIES MONTH
By State Representative Robin Bartleman
n November, we recognize National Veterans and Military Families Month. It is a time to honor those who have served in the military and the families who stood alongside them during their service. We should take this opportunity to honor their commitment to protecting American freedoms.
As a public servant, I am committed to supporting and honoring the veterans of Florida. I recognize the sacrifices they have made for our country and I feel a deep appreciation for their service. I will continue to support initiatives that provide veterans and their families with the resources and recognition they deserve. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my community for allowing me the privilege of serving you and serving our honorable veterans.
This year, the Legislature passed the following bills to help the veterans in Florida: I co-sponsored House Bill 1329 - Veterans, which enhances support for Florida's vet-
erans by expanding outreach and services, establishes a council to help individuals with brain and spinal cord injuries access healthcare, promotes arts and culture in the state, requires schools to teach students about Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day, and exempts some disabled veterans from paying for hunting and fishing licenses.
I also cosponsored House Bill 725 – Veterans’ Long Term Care Facilities Admissions, which expands the eligibility for residency at state veterans’ homes operated by the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs (FDVA) to include the spouse or surviving spouse of a qualifying veteran.
If you or someone you know is a veteran needing help, please reach out to the following resources.
It is an honor to serve you, and we are here to assist with any issues or concerns. Feel free to contact me anytime at Robin. Bartleman@myfloridahouse.gov or our office at (954) 424-6828. You can also reach me on my personal cell at (954) 668-3662.

GREETINGS FROM YOUR Chamber President!
By Patty Archer
As November rolls in, we enter an exciting time of year—the start of the Small Business Season. While many of us are gearing up for the holidays, it’s important to remember the impact our shopping habits have on the local economy. Small Business Season runs from now through the end of the year, and it’s the perfect opportunity to support the businesses that make our community unique.
Small businesses are the heartbeat of Weston. They provide more than just goods and services—they create jobs, offer personalized customer experiences, and are often the sponsors behind our local sports teams, schools, and community events. When you shop local, a significant portion of the money stays in the community, helping fund public services, infrastructure, and economic growth.
This season, whether you’re shopping for holiday gifts, dining out, or hiring services, remember the importance of shopping small. Every dollar spent locally helps ensure that these businesses, many of which are family-owned and have been here for years, continue to thrive. Small businesses have shown resilience through recent challenges, and now more than ever, they need our support.
Let’s make this holiday season one to remember by shopping locally and investing in our community’s future. Together, we can build a stronger, more vibrant local economy—one that benefits us all.
So, as you start your holiday shopping, make it a priority to support the small businesses that are the heart of our community.
Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. For more information and our event calendar, visit westonflchamber.com.
