Give Thanks and Look for the Good
I
n America, we traditionally take time to reflect on life during November. We think about our families, our community, our country and the people we love. We are thankful for all these things and more. It is sometimes difficult to reflect on the good things in life. We live in an era of constant communication and conflict. Many popular media outlets capitalize on the things that divide us. At Our City we focus on the things that bring us together. We publish news about our community with a decidedly positive voice. You won’t see any opinion columns written to demonize one group of people or another. We believe that 100 people pulling on a rope in the same direction can accomplish anything, while 50 people pulling on each end of a rope can accomplish nothing. Check out The Our City Dining Guide in this issue and on our website. It’s a selection of our staff’s favorite restaurants from around the area. These are some of the best places to host a holiday party, enjoy Thanksgiving dinner, or to grab a quick bite with friends after work. You could even visit one of these restaurants with the people you love for no reason other than to give thanks you have them in your life. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

he City of Coral Springs wants to make this Thanksgiving holiday a special day for local families. the THANKSforGIVING Food Drive to assist families with holiday meals in the City of Coral Springs. Starting in early September, City staff started organizing employee fundraisers like pizza lunch, wear jeans to work day and food collection
to raise food and funds for the drive. With that and donations from residents and businesses, the City is able to provide 500 meals to local families with the assistance of local religious organizations,” said Lynne Martzall, Media Relations Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs. “Two of the City’s core values for employees are
customer focus and empowerment. By affording our staff the opportunity to assist others in need we are not only providing excellent customer service, we are empowering our employees to do something outside of their regular work duties to assist others,” added Martzall. Donations can be dropped off at: City Hall, 9500 W. Sample Road; City Hall in the Mall, 9239 W. Atlantic Blvd.; Coral Springs Gymnasium, 2501 Coral Springs Drive; or The Coral Springs Public Safety Building, 2801 Coral Springs Drive. No perishables and be sure to check all expiration dates. All donations must be made by Friday, November 2. Donated items are placed in baskets, along with a gift certificate for a turkey, ham or main dish, and distributed through local religious institutions to pre-selected families. For more information, call Mary-Lin at 954-346-1356 or Debbie at 954-346-1746.

of them memorialized locally. “The City of Coral Springs takes great pride in honoring the men and women who served in the Armed Services. The ceremony is our way of honoring their sacrifice,” said Lynne Martzall, Media Relations Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs. “The Veteran’s Day Ceremony is one of many ways the City honors those who served in the military. We also host a Memorial Day Ceremony to honor the lives lost while serving in the military. In addition, many of our City employees participate in the Honor Flight, in which those who served in WWII and the Korean War are escorted on a day trip to Washington DC to see both memorials,” continued Martzall. Coral Springs Mayor Skip Campbell is proud to recognize the Veterans at this event, and there will be other guest speakers at the Ceremony. “Those who served in our Armed Forces have sacrificed their time with family and their safety to ensure the United States of America remains the home of the free,” said Martzall, adding, “In addition, we ask that people attending the event wear patriotic colors to support our Veterans.” For more information on the City of Coral Springs Veterans Day Ceremony, please call 954-345-2200.

MSD Victims Honored at Final Football Game of Season, Team Retires Coach Aaron Feis’ Number BY JON DUKA
T
he Marjory Stoneman Douglas Football team honored the people who lost their lives during last spring’s shooting at their final home game on October 18th. In a moving ceremony, 15 game balls were given to the families of the 14 students who lost their lives along with teacher Scott Beigel’s family. The team also honored slain Athletic Director Chris Hixon, giving his family a framed team polo shirt. Hixon was often seen wearing shirts like the one given to his family on game days. Perhaps the most emotional moment of the night was when beloved coach, Aaron Feis’s number 73 was retired by the team. Feis has been widely recognized as a hero on that terrible day, shielding students from gunfire. “He was Douglas football,” Douglas Head Coach Willis May said of Feis, “He played here, he coached here. He loved Douglas football and everybody knew he loved Douglas football. “He had nothing but the concern of the kids at all times, trying to make them better people... And he changed a lot of lives while he was here. There are a lot of kids that played here that will tell you that if it wasn’t for Coach Feis, they wouldn’t have or be doing

what they’re doing now.” The Eagles went on to lose the game against rival Taravella 31-20, falling to 4-4 on the season. The result, however, was secondary to the emotion on the field. The team has two more games this season against Monarch High School and Plantation High School.

MESSAGE FROM BROWARD COMMISSIONER
November Update
BY: MICHAEL UDINE very month in District 3 we have unique opportunities to come together as a community. In conjunction with Broward County’s Office of Economic and Small Business Development we hosted a very productive seminar in Coral Springs for local business owners. The event centered around learning how to work with Broward County to expand and enhance local business. It was great to meet with so many folks from our cities. Another great event was the Florida International Trade and Cultural Expo (FITCE). I was honored to participate in a workshop with representatives from the Latin American business community. Brazil, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, and Costa Rica were all at the table. One of the most important days in November is Veteran’s Day. This is a day where we honor those who have served our country and our communities. It is an honor to attend the Veteran’s Day ceremonies hosted by the cities of District 3. I look forward to hearing from veterans and their families about their experiences, and how they continue to serve. Fall means good times with family and friends in District 3. Tamarac hosts the 15th Annual “Taste of Tamarac” event, and the annual Turkey Trot. North Lauderdale encourages residents to join “Take a Hike Day” in Hampton Pines Park. “Keep Coral Springs Beautiful” Clean Up Day brings the community together for a good cause. Parkland hosts their annual “Hayride, Hoedown, and Bonfire”. These events are enjoyed by all. As a resident and Commissioner representing Northwest Broward, I want to give a shout out to all the staff of District 3 Cities who work hard to make these events possible. Legislatively, I continue to ensure that the MSD Public Safety Commission findings are implemented state wide by all counties. I introduced a resolution through the Florida Association of Counties Health and Public Safety Committee. If adopted this resolution will make relevant changes to keep schools safe. The Florida Association of Counties will assist with the development of communications and infrastructure. To read the resolution, and get more information please visit my website at broward.org/commission/district3 or florida-counties.com

Salvation Army Reaches Out to Those in Need BY DEBBY TEICH
F
or more than 135 years, The Salvation Army has been supporting those in need in the U.S. without discrimination. Many are familiar with the Red Kettle Campaign bell ringers during the holidays, but the organization is about much more. Over 25 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through a range of social services: food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless, and opportunities for underprivileged children. Most recently, The Salvation Army of Broward County has been involved in the relief efforts of the Tuscaloosa Tornados, Stoneman Douglas shooting, and the FIU bridge collapse. It has also responded to many of the recent hurricanes, including store. Trucks also make home pickups for furniMichael, Florence, Irma, Matthew, Wilma, and ture and larger items. To schedule a pick up, call Katrina. It is currently preparing to help those in 954-463-3725. need for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Over 500 Fed During Thanksgiving The Salvation Army wants to make sure that as many people as possible have an opportunity to enjoy a festive meal during the Thanksgiving holiday. Locally, it feeds feed approximately 500 homeless individuals and families during a Thanksgiving Day full service, sit-down lunch that includes freshly roasted turkey with all the trimmings. It is sponsored by the Cheesecake Factory at the Community Center in Fort Lauderdale. The shelter in Hollywood is a 33-unit apartment style complex for homeless families that have their own kitchen to prepare meals. The Salvation Army needs 33 Thanksgiving food baskets for these families.
“Our work has had many expressions in the community, always aiming at helping the poorest and those most in need,” said Major Keath Biggers, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Broward County. “As society’s needs change, The Salvation Army in Broward has the ability to respond locally to shape and modify our services to meet the needs of Broward County citizens.” The main facility is located at 1901 W. Broward Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale. There are also thrift stores in six locations (Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Tamarac, Margate, Pompano Beach, Pembroke Pines) that help provide funding. There is a homeless shelter, Community & Worship Center and Adult Rehabilitation Center in Fort Lauderdale, as well as a homeless shelter in Hollywood. Find Bargains at Wacky Wednesdays Located on State Road 7, the Family Thrift store #320 in Margate has been open for approximately 30 years. All of the merchandise it sells comes from donations and includes clothing, furniture, accessories, books, jewelry, household items, small appliances and more. Every Wednesday is “Wacky Wednesday,” when all clothing is half price. It has become a well-known tradition that always draws a large crowd. Small items can be donated in the trailer in the parking lot behind the Margate 32 NOVEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
“We are committed to helping homeless individuals and families feel a sense of belonging during the holidays,” said Biggers. “No one should have to feel alone, especially on a holiday such as Thanksgiving. Please consider donating non-perishable items to help with the increase in demand.” Locals Feel the Magic of Christmas The Salvation Army of Broward County helps approximately 2,500 people during the Christmas holiday through two key efforts. The Angel Tree program provides gifts of toys and clothing to needy families in Broward County. The Red Kettle Campaign is the annual fundraiser that consists of the famous bell ringers, which ring at over 50 locations throughout Broward County. It is the largest fundraiser and typically raises
approximately $150,000. The public can help with the Angel Tree program by “adopting” angels, which can be found at four local malls: Coral Square, Galleria, Pembroke Lakes, and Westfield Broward from November 27 to December 16. You can also help by hosting an Angel Tree at your office or place of business or adopting an angel by purchasing a gift from the Amazon Wishlist: http://a. co/bhGVKTA. Of course, donations placed in the Red Kettles are also appreciated. To learn about volunteer opportunities for the Christmas season, including bell ringers, contact Desiree Saunders at 954-712-2435 or desiree.saunders@uss.salvationarmy.org, “No child should ever wake up on Christmas morning and not feel the magic of Christmas,” said Biggers. Major Keath Biggers’s wife, Major Candice Biggers, personally understands the impact of the program. Her family was a recipient of The Salvation Army’s Christmas assistance when she was 10 years of age. Her father was out of a job for over a year. After holding several “yard sales” of everyone’s belongings to make ends meet, Christmas was approaching with no means of providing for his family. The local Salvation Army provided Christmas for his family that year during their financial crisis. The family was invited to the church programs, men and women’s as well as youth programs, and they began attending soon after the invite. Christmas continues to be Major Candice Biggers’ favorite time of the year. She is now a part of making sure no families go without on Christmas, by serving as a Salvation Army officer. Relief During and After Storms The Salvation Army is always quick to respond during and after storms. It keeps a database of volunteers trained in disaster work. It also holds trainings throughout the year for interested volunteers that include everything from an introductory course to food safety to emotional and spiritual care. Volunteers helped with meal service, emotional and spiritual care, and providing clean up kits. “In a disaster, the amount of people that need basic human needs of food, clothing, and shelter dramatically increase,” said Biggers. “We are there to serve survivors in any way we can.” Anyone who is struggling with addiction or needs a restart in their life, can call 954-463-3725 and ask to speak with the Intake or Program Director. Your family doctor: The benefits of a primary care provider Cleveland Clinic Florida offers comprehensive primary care services for Weston and SW Broward families. As life changes, so do the healthcare needs for yourself and your loved ones. You may want to consider choosing a primary care physician – family medicine or internal medicine physician – who can be your partner in health and wellness. “We’re trained to provide comprehensive care for patients age six and up,” said Hermann Stubbe, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida family medicine Hermann Stubbe, MD physician who sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston Family Health Center. “We treat a variety of conditions – from allergies and ear infections to orthopaedic issues and women’s health.” Knows family history Many patients are unsure about health concerns and diseases in their family tree. Since a primary care physician often cares for a family from one generation to the next, they know the family’s medical history. “We often see grandparents, children and grandchildren. This aids in our ability to not only care for an individual, but to care for the family as a whole,” said Dr. Stubbe. No need for multiple physicians In most cases, family and internal medicine physicians can address multiple medical needs during an office visit or they can make referrals to the appropriate specialist(s), if necessary. “Over time, your primary care physician knows you well – including your health history, family history, and risk factors – so we can advocate Dunia Hernandez, MD for you and help you navigate the healthcare system,” explained Dr. Dunia Hernandez, a Cleveland Clinic Florida internal medicine physician who sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston main campus. Long-term, trusting relationships Patients are often too shy or embarrassed to talk about medical concerns or certain topics. “Since we have longstanding relationships with our patients, a degree of trust is established,” said Dr. Hernandez. It makes it easier to talk about issues when there’s a level of comfort and camaraderie.” To make an appointment with Dr. Stubbe, Dr. Hernandez or any other primary care physician at a convenient Cleveland Clinic Florida Weston location, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Appointment to make an appointment online. American Heritage School Leads Country in National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists BY TERRY JAILLET
A
merican Heritage School (AHS), in Plantation, has the highest number of National Merit Semifinalists of any private school in the country. It is also has the more Semifinalists than any other high school in Florida for the 9th consecutive year. Seventy seniors at the school were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) this year. In fact, one in four of the Class of 2019 is a nation-
ally recognized scholar. “American Heritage has taught me you can be a big fish in a big pond, and you can get ahead and learn so much,” said AHS senior Eric Bazail. “The rigor that is expected of us, the collaborative aspect in all my classes and the incredible resources available at Heritage have helped me become much more knowledgeable and a better student.” The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.6 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/ NMSQT in their respective states. About half of the Semifinalists go on to win
scholarships. The NMSC will choose the winners of the $2,500 scholarships from the pool of finalists in the spring. Ten of the Semifinalists are residents of Parkland and Coral Springs, including: • Amy Haft • Svetoslav Karagueorguiev • Emily Pallack • Caludia Bermudez • Olivia Loyd • Jacob Mass • Azzara Nincevic • Daniela Velez • Sophia Viner • Julie Mason American Heritage High School Principal, Elise Blum, commented, “It is quite an accomplishment to be among the top 1% of high school students in the entire nation, and I hope this recognition empowers them to keep exceeding the potential in college and in their future careers.” For more information about the National Merit Scholarship Program visit www.nationalmerit.org. The family grew even stronger as the siblings began to work together at this first location.

T
he holidays are the perfect time of year to get together with friends and family and remember why we are so thankful. Thanksgiving gives me the opportunity to make one of my favorite recipes, passed down to me from my mother that I have doctored up throughout the years of making this dish. I would like to share with you my famous Thanksgiving stuffing recipe. You will need the following ingredients: ▸▸ Seasoned bread cubes (bag and half) ▸▸ 1 can of low-sodium cream of mushroom soup ▸▸ 1 can of low-sodium cream of broccoli soup ▸▸ 2 tubes of sage sausage (or turkey sausage for a healthier option) ▸▸ 1 white onion

3-5 eggs 1 stick of butter Salt/pepper Mushrooms ½ cup of half and half In one pan lightly brown the sausage over medium-high heat. In another pan heat one stick of butter, add chopped onion and mushrooms. Lightly season with salt and pepper. Cook until vegetables are tender-crisp. Add cream of mushroom and cream of broccoli soup to pan and bring to boil. Remove pan from heat, add stuffing, ½ cup of half and half and mix lightly. Heat oven to 350°F. Spoon stuffing mixture into casserole dish and bake uncovered for 30 minutes.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

44 NOVEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
BY TERRY JAILLET oral Springs Mayor, Walter “Skip” Campbell, Jr. died on Tuesday, October 23rd. He was 69 years old. The sudden death of the long-time Democrat has left a void in Broward County Democratic leadership. There will be a special election to fill the Coral Springs Mayor’s seat in March next year. Campbell began his political career in 1996 by winning the race for State Senator in the 33rd District. He held that Senate seat for ten years. After leaving the Senate due to term limits, he ran for Florida State Attorney General in 2006, ultimately losing the race to Republican Bill McCollum. Campbell ran for and won the race for Mayor in 2014. He was standing for reelection this year and was unopposed. Prior to his political career, Campbell was a successful trial attorney. He founded law firm Krupnick, Campbell, Malone, Buser, Hancock & Liberman with Jon Krupnick in 1975 and worked as and adjunct law professor at the Shepard Broad Law Center. He eventually became President of the Broward County Bar Association and served as a member of the Florida Election Commission. While in private practice, Campbell sued the Dupont Company over fungicide caused crop damage and was part of a law suite credited with making cars safer. An outpouring of condolences has come from all corners of the political spectrum. In particular, his actions after the shooting at Stoneham-Douglas High School were noted. “It is with heavy hearts, and gratitude for a life lived in service of others that we mourn the passing of Walter ‘Skip’ Campbell… After witnessing firsthand the devastation and violence in Parkland… Skip acted with boldness of vision and leadership that marked his life, committing himself to the cause of banning military-style assault weapons in Florida,” said Gail Schwartz, chair of Ban Assault Weapons Now. “He was my seat mate in the Florida Senate and was quick-witted, funloving, and always ready to reach across the aisle or bridge a divide to solve problems,” Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said. Campbell had a sudden cardiac event while at home recovering from hip replacement surgery. City officials noted that he was active early that day, taking phone calls and doing business from home. “The city of Coral Springs lost a great mayor and an even better man,” said John “J.J.” Hearn, the city’s attorney, “He truly was just a nice guy.” “My heart is broke over the sudden loss of a friend,” said Commissioner Joy Carter. “Thirty-four years ago when I visited Coral Springs, I met Skip and Lynn Campbell.” Skip Campbell is survived by his wife, Lynn, and two children.

Gentle Teeth And Braces Offers Complete Dental Care
G
entle Teeth & Braces Of Coral Springs is a family-friendly practice located on University Drive. They offer a full compliment of dental treatment and cosmetic options to patients at all phases of life. We sat down with founder, Dr. Chandy Samuel to learn more. Tell us about your practice! Our mission is to provide families with all phases of outstanding dental care with the convenience of multiple locations throughout Broward County and with extended evening and weekend hours. What seperates your practice from others? We strive to be convenient for patients with busy lifestyles. We have every specialisty located at all our locations. Families won’t need to drive all over town to get the care they need. What is your background? I am from Staten Island, New York and spent my early years there before relocating to sunny South Florida. I earned a degree from the State University of Binghamton in Psychobiology and graduated from
the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine at the top of my class. After 4 years in the brutal cold, I moved back to Florida and attended Nova Southeastern University where I received my Advanced Education in General Dentistry Degree. I started Gentle Teeth and worked as a cosmetic dentist for two years before pursuing my passion in Orthodontics at the Universtiy of Jacksonville, where I earned an Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Specialist Certificate. My unique training as a cosmetic dentist prior to being an orthodontist
allows me to help patients create the most pleasing smile one can achieve. Dr. Anurupa Singh Roy was born and raised in Georgetown, Guyana, and attended college at the Hunter College, CUNY New York. She earned her Doctorate of Medical Dentistry at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. In addition to practicing the art and science of dentistry at Gentle Teeth, Dr. Singh Roy has completed countless hours of continuing education in postgraduate dentistry. The bulk of her extra training has been in cosmetic dentistry, specializing in dental veneers. She is dedicated to offering the latest, most effective treatments possible for everything from a simple filling to complex root canals and fullcosmetic smile makeovers. Dr. Singh Roy is a different kind of dentist. Gentle, patient, and caring. She has the uncanny ability to convert hesitant patients with dental-related fears and anxieties to loyal patients and fellow ambassadors of good oral health. She is also well regarded by her patients for her laid-back nature and thoroughness. Tell us about your office Gentle Teeth has all state of the art technology from digital imaging X-Rays to limit radiation for our patients as well as touch screen computers in every room to allow our doctors to communicate successfully with patients. The computers in each room allows our caring doctors to show videos and pictures of procedures so our patients can fully understand what types of treatements are called for. Our dental assistants personalize the experience for every patient. Our staff will remember your name fondly. Our hygienists offer specific oral health instructions modified to each patient. What is special about your staff? What seperates our staff is how truly caring and compassionate they are. Our team loves our patients and what they do for a living. It really shows. Our professional dental team will stop at nothing to make your visit comfortable and meet all your expectations What can patients expect when they visit your office? Our patients can expect personalized care, a professional and caring staff, and a knowledgeable and experienced dentist or specialists. Our patients can expect all their questions about treatment or
insurance to be answered promptly by our experienced medical and dental billing specialists. There are so many different types of treatments and serivces offered these days. What does your practice offer? Services offered by our offices include: Clear Braces, Metal Braces, Lingual Braces, Invisalign, Cosmetic Dentistry, Teeth Whitening, Dental Veneers, White Fillings, Porcelain Crowns, Reconstructive Dentistry, Implants, Periodontal Therapy, Porcelain Bridges, Root Canals, Wisdom Teeth Extractions, Pediatric Dentistry. If you can think of it, we probably offer it! How is Gentle Teeth different from other dental pratices? Our customer care and reasonable prices are what set us from our competition. Patients are part of the family in our office and our staff makes sure that their oral care and oral health are a top priority. Our office staff works tirelessly to accommodate all dental treatment plans to each patients insurance and personal economic standing. Do you offer anything new in the field? We now offer Lingual Braces. Thse are braces that are placed on the inside face of the tooth and as such cannot be seen when the patient smiles or talks. This new orthodontic innovation has patients fascinated because they can now straighten their teeth without having to see the brackets on their teeth. We also offer zirconia crowns for pediatric patients which is superior to other pediatric crown options. Zirconia not only has excellent sesthetics, but they also will not chip the same way
that preveneered stainless steel crowns do on occasion, nor will they discolor and break down over time like resin strip crowns often do. What types of insurance to you accept We accept all major insurances Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you or your practice? We are continually trying to improve our practice to cater to the needs of our families. We feel we offer the best quality service and patient care in all of Florida and have the convenience of evening and Saturday appointments, with 4 convenient locations in Kendall, Pembroke Pines, Coral Springs and Aventura.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PARKLAND
Parkland Update
MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY t is November and Election Day is almost upon us. Early voting continues from 7am-7pm through November 4 at the P-REC in Pine Trails Park. If you are registered to vote in Broward County, you just need to bring your license to vote there. Election Day is November 6. Polls are open from 7am-7pm but you must vote at your designated polling place. If you are not sure where you should vote on Election Day, you can look up the information on the Broward Supervisor of Elections website at www.browardsoe.org. The ballot is very long this year with many ballot amendments, so do your homework before you go to the polls. You can view a sample ballot on the Broward Supervisor of Elections website. The wait is over! Parkland’s famous Farmer’s Market is back this month starting on November 4 from 9am-1pm at the Equestrian Center! On Sunday, November 18, there will also be a craft fair at the Farmer’s Market. Make sure you don’t miss out on the delicious foods and goodies at the market. Veterans Day is a special holiday in November when we honor all those who served in our armed forces. We are all grateful for their service to our country and their selflessness. They have dedicated themselves and sacrificed so much for our country and our freedoms. Please join us at the Parkland Amphitheater on November 11 at 5:00pm for Parkland’s Veterans Day Ceremony to honor our Veterans. Every year, the Interfaith Coalition of Coral Springs and Parkland hosts a PreThanksgiving Interfaith Unity Service where clergy and people from all different faiths come together to give thanks. It is a wonderful service that reminds that we are all connected and that we are all in this together. Given what our community has been through this year, we need this more than ever. This year’s service will be on Tuesday, November 20, at 7:00pm at Temple Beth Orr in Coral Springs. I hope you will be able to join us as a way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday. It has been an extremely difficult year for so many members of our community. Many are still suffering and for others it has been easy to get caught up in negativity. I am incredibly grateful for the many amazing, caring, hardworking residents throughout Parkland who regularly give back, work hard to make a difference and make our City such a wonderful place to live. It is the people who help out and work toward solutions in spite of difficulties and obstacles who truly make a difference. And show us all what resilience means. With our hectic schedules it’s not often we have any extra time in our days. Thankfully, we “fall back” and pick up an extra hour on November 4, so don’t forget to set your clocks back. This month take a moment to stop, take a breath, notice the good things around you and think about what you’re thankful for. Wishing you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving! If you have any questions or concerns, you can always reach me at chunschofsky@ cityofparkland.org. I look forward to hearing from you.

50 NOVEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
ctober is here, and hopefully with it we will start having some of that beautiful weather that we brag about to those up north who are beginning to prepare for winter. October is also the month that brings us Halloween. Halloween is always a fun time for young children and families. It is also a good time to remind all of us about pedestrian traffic and driving safely. Pedestrians need to cross at crosswalks and drivers need to yield for them. I would encourage all “Trickor-Treaters” to carry flashlights and wear reflective costumes. I am asking our drivers to be extra vigilant and cautious when driving in our neighborhoods. The terrific men and women who patrol our streets are concerned about everyone’s safety. They will be patrolling the back streets and neighborhoods in an effort to keep everyone safe. Parents are also reminded to inspect all treats before allowing children to enjoy them. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You will see many of our officers wearing pink badges and sporting pink patches on our uniforms in an effort to bring awareness and support to breast cancer research. Cancer research has come a long way, but there is still much work to be done. It is our hope that you will join us in this fight. Together we can take massive steps to finding a cure. On September 15, 2018, our department partnered with 4FNOW, a charity that was founded by Parkland parents seeking to protect children from gun violence, and held the City’s first “Gun Buyback” program. The event was held at our new city hall parking garage and was an overwhelming success. We collected 129 guns that day from residents who said they no longer needed, or wanted, the firearms. The gun buyback program was a great way for our citizens to come forward and participate on their own volition. Any time we can take guns off the street, we decrease the chance that they end up in the hands of a criminal who would use them to harm our citizens or commit crimes. I want to thank all the members of 4FNOW who were instrumental in making this program a success. Our department, along with the Coral Springs Fire Department, joined Vice Mayor Lou Cimaglia’s Opioid Task Force to help raise awareness about the plague of opioid addiction. Deputy Chief Shawn Backer and members from Broward Health Coral Springs have been making the rounds to many civic groups, giving a presentation and providing valuable information on this public health issue. They have done a fantastic job of helping educate our citizens about this dangerous threat to our citizens. If you would like us to visit your organization, please contact us at (954) 346-1201. You can also get more information at https://www. coralsprings.org/opioid The Coral Springs Opioid Task Force is partnering with the DEA for the National Drug Take Back initiative on Saturday, October 27 from 10 am - 2 pm. You can rid your home of unwanted and unused medication to prevent misuse. Coral Springs Police will be on-site collecting your drugs, no questions asked. You can leave your medications in the bottle, as the entire prescription will be incinerated and will not leave the hands of our sworn officers. The drop off location is at Broward Health Coral Springs: 3100 Coral Hills Drive (Medical Office Complex, use the ER entrance off Coral Hills Drive). Please do not bring any sharps or aerosols. Lastly, I want to wish all of you a very safe and happy Halloween. As always, if you see something suspicious or unusual in the community, you have the power to make a call and make a difference by calling our nonemergency number (954) 344-1800. If you haven’t already, please connect with me on Facebook @ ChiefParry.

ishing everyone a happy and healthy Holiday Season! As we approach these next few weeks, we know that a lot of people will be traveling near and far, celebrating at holiday parties, attending school functions, shopping for gifts for friends and family and will be focused on the season of giving. With all of this excitement in store, I am here to remind you that it is so important that we all continue to stay vigilant about protecting first and foremost, ourselves, loved ones, and our personal property. If you plan on traveling this holiday season, whether it be for a long weekend or an extended period of time, be sure that you secure your home; lock all doors and activate your home’s alarm system. Do you have video surveillance cameras at your home? Even better! It is important to portray your home as being “lived in” even if you are 1,000 miles away. Leave a light on (or two) on the exterior of your home and inside. Do not leave a spare key under your front door mat or anywhere that a criminal may think to investigate. My best advice is to give a spare house key to a responsible neighbor or close family/friend, should anyone need to enter your home while you are away. In Margate, we provide a “Special Watch” for residents that are planning on traveling for a specified time period with no one staying at home. Our road patrol officers will provide increased patrol and will check the residence multiple times throughout their shift. If you are interested in requesting a Special Watch, please contact the Margate Police Department at (954)972-7111 or BSO Non-Emergency at (954)764-4357 to speak with a police officer. Along with travel, shopping from store to store causes a heightened concern during the holiday season. Criminals will always keep a close eye on shoppers as they are entering and exiting a store. These are some common clues that they are looking for to determine if your car is going to be the one they break into: ▸▸ Are you alone? ▸▸ Where are you specifically placing shopping bags when entering your vehicle? (trunk, back seat, passenger seat floor? Are they visible or hidden?) ▸▸ Where is your next stop? Are you going to another store to continue shopping? Are you putting items in the car and then walking back into the mall? ▸▸ Did you lock your doors and hide all of your valuables? These are just a few of the things that the criminals are looking for, somewhat of a checklist. The best piece of advice I can provide you if you are planning on shopping at multiple locations, is to be sure that you hide all shopping bags inside of your trunk or enclosed space so that they are not visible to anyone who may be taking a peek with ill intentions. If you are able to go home to safely store your purchases, do it! The time that it takes to assure that your money spent is safe, is well worth it! Be sure to watch your surroundings. During the holiday season, businesses have extended store hours in order to accommodate all of your shopping needs! Typically, we don’t go shopping late in the night, but during the holiday season, it just seems like it has become the new norm. Late night gift runs are becoming more and more popular. Be sure that you are aware of what is around you and that you try to walk in well-lit areas of the parking lot. Don’t want to walk out of the store alone? Ask a store associate to escort you to your car. During this holiday season, many stores have increased security officers who may walk you to your vehicle. We know that the holidays always bring on the increased hustle and bustle of our everyday routines. If I can leave you with three important tips, remember this:
▸▸ Always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, where lighting is dim. ▸▸ Do not leave your valuables inside of your vehicle and if you have to, HIDE THEM! ▸▸ lways keep your home looking as though it is being “lived in” even if you are traveling for a short period of time.
Should you ever be in a situation where you need law enforcement, please do not hesitate to pick up the phone and dial 911. During any season, any month, any day of the year, we are here to serve our community. Our goal is to keep our citizens safe! See something suspicious, someone who makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up? Don’t think about it, just call! Please visit the Margate Police Department’s Facebook Page (facebook.com/ MargateFLPolice) as well as our Instagram (@Margatepd) where we share safety tips. Should you ever have any questions, please contact the Margate Police Department at (954)972-7111 and as always, in an emergency, please call 911. From our Margate Police family to yours, we wish everyone who celebrates a happy and healthy Thanksgiving celebrated with your loved ones! 52 NOVEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
