Happy Valentine’s Day!
M
any of us will be purchasing our chocolates and flowers for our sweethearts, or writing our dearest a love letter or two, on February 14th. Valentine’s Day has evolved from a somber Christian day of remembrance into a day for all of us to celebrate those we love most. Be sure to look for some great Valentine’s Day gift ideas and deals in this month’s Our City. Here are a few fun facts you may not have known about Valentine’s Day: ▸▸ About 1 in 30 pet owners purchase a Valentine’s Day present for their pet. ▸▸ Much like kids at school, in Victorian times Valentine’s Day cards were sent anonymously. ▸▸ Over 800 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year and almost all of those cards are purchased within a week of February 14th. ▸▸ In 1573, Britain’s King Henry VII declared February 14th Valentines Day (unfortunately his son wasn’t a very good Valentine). ▸▸ Americans buy more than 30 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate each year. ▸▸ Almost 200 million roses are expected to be purchased on Valentine’s Day this year. So, this February 14th, when you give your most cherished loved one that something special, you will know the rest of the story. Happy Valentine’s Day! Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

A Blast from the Past - Postcard Pop-Up Display at ArtsPark BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
lmost a century ago, a resilient real estate developer founded the City of Hollywood. Joseph W. Young Jr. put the South Florida city on the map and it quickly became one of the few planned cities with large circles, broad boulevards, and plenty of waterways which was unheard of in those days. Young did this under the “City Beautification” movement in the early part of the 20th century. Unfortunately, Hollywood’s founder died at the young age of fifty-one on February 27th, 1934 in his home on Hollywood Boulevard. To keep his memory alive, the first Founder’s Day celebration was held in August of 1935. Mayor Arthur W. Kellner issued a proclamation on August 1st designating August 4th, Young’s birthday, as Founder’s Day and a public holiday. Besides this significant celebratory day in the City, a dedicated group of individuals in addition to the Hollywood Historical Society (HHS) wanted others to learn and appreciate all the history just the same. So, along with the HHS, they decided to create a pop-up postcard museum in the ArtsPark gallery. The display will feature vintage postcards of Hollywood with a hand-written story on the back of each of them. Also, on display will be covers of Joseph Young’s Hollywood Reporter. The promotional
magazine was put out by his company to sell Hollywood real estate. The exhibit will highlight important historical structures still standing as well as ones lost through demolition through vintage photography. Old advertisements promoting the City in The Saturday Evening Post and Literary Digest will also be prominent. An example of Dade County pine, the
original lumber from the indigenous trees used to build the first structures, will also be on display. “It’s interesting to see what they were saying about us as far back as the twenty’s,” said Clive Taylor, Pop-Up Museum Organizer. “These are real time capsules about advertising in Hollywood’s early years as a boom time city.” The temporary installation opened last month with a preview for Hollywood Leadership Class XLIII. The class then continued to the historic Hammerstein House for a visit with the HHS. The exhibit’s grand unveiling followed during ArtWalk and will hopefully become permanent for everyone to enjoy. “It seemed like a quick and easy way to get people interested in our city’s history,” added Taylor.

They Call it “Puppy Love” BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
lthough the holidays are over, February has a few celebrations of its’ own. Black History Month, American Heart Month, and of course Valentine’s Day are the first to come to mind, but Hollywood dog lovers are preparing for the “4th Annual Be Mine Dog Show”. Get ready for plenty of smooches with pooches as the show continues to grow each year. Public officials including Mayor Josh Levy and Hollywood Commissioner Traci Callari don’t ever miss this puppy palooza. Additionally, a distinguished panel of animal lovers and activists will be judges for the paws-itively doggone fun contests. The anticipated event presented by The Hollywood Council of Civic Associations (HCCA) along with the Hollywood Department of Parks & Recreation, The Hollywood Police Department, and Knights of Columbus Council 4851 will be on February 9th
from 9:00 am-1:00 pm at the Stan Goldman “Hollywoof” Dog Park. The four-hour event is open to the public for free. Entries of $5 per event/per dog for multiple contest categories such as Best Costume, Hardest Trick, Most Unique, Most Obedient, Best Kisser, Owner/Dog Look Alike, Longest Ears/Tail and more will fill the afternoon. Raffles will be available to win pet gift baskets and ribbons will be awarded for the top three in each category. “Each year the ‘Be Mine Dog Show’ gets better and better. The community-driven event successfully brings together animal lovers in our community for a day full of tail-waggin’ fun, good-natured competition, raffles, prizes and more,” exclaimed Joann Hussey, City of Hollywood Communications Manager. “The best part about the event is that it benefits graduating Hollywood and Hallandale high school seniors.” All proceeds will benefit the HCCA’s “Pete Brewer Scholarship Fund”. Brewer was a Hollywood resident for over 50 years and an activist for an open and responsible city government. He was a staunch supporter of top-quality neighborhood schools. His goal was for all children regardless of economic status to
receive an excellent education. He was also a leader in neighborhood beautification projects. Brewer passed away in October 2015 and this furry fundraiser will now be an annual event to keep his memory alive fur-ever. “Over the past three years, we have given out seven $1,000 scholarships which is the best way to honor such an amazing civic activist. This event allows residents to get out and enjoy while supporting local businesses and schools. It’s done purely by volunteers with just joy and love, and there’s nothing better than the love one has for dogs,” added Patricia Antrican, HCCA Vice President. The Stan Goldman “Hollywoof” Dog Park is located at 800 Knights Road, Hollywood 33021. To volunteer, sponsor, or for more information, please call 954-662-3612.

South Korean Grows Up in Florida & Builds Successful Family Focused Martial Arts Academy In South Florida
M
aster Sang Koo Kang runs a martial arts academy that provides a stable, family friendly environment where students can excel. However, its two locations, in Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach, are a long way from its founder’s origins in Korea. Korean Immigrant Achieves the American Dream Sang Koo Kang was born in Seoul, Korea in 1966. Like many Korean children at the time, Sang’s
early childhood was hard and his only escape from the harsh realities of life was his introduction, at the age of 5, to Tae Kwon Do. He later emigrated to the United States. Much of his early life and teens were spent living in poverty, yet he continued his Tae Kwon Do training. Eventually, he became a champion as well as a stand-out football player. The work ethic he developed while training in Martial Arts led him to Florida State University in Tallahassee. While at Florida State, Sang “walked on” to the football team, earning a spot and playing all four years. In 1990 Sang opened his first martial arts school in Miami Beach. He later added locations in Miami Gardens and Pembroke Pines; soon Sang had ten locations throughout South Florida. The poor kid from Korea became a multi-sport athletic star, college graduate and successful
business owner. The TNT Difference After selling off his previous locations, Sang now operates two locations: Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach. Driftwood Middle School Shows How Their Garden Grows BY BEVERLY PERKINS
D
riftwood Middle School is known throughout Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) as one of the most environmentally conscious schools for all their “Green” efforts. These efforts have not gone unnoticed in the community either because last year Baker Concrete, one of the nation’s leading construction firms, recognized the magnet academy’s continuous initiatives. In 2012, Driftwood Middle School was recognized for being the first United States Department of Education (USDOE) “Green Ribbon School.” Since then Driftwood has gone on to win the Florida Green School Award and the P3 EcoChallenge Green School Award, and most recently the National Wildlife Federation Green Flag Award. Christine Ruiz-Diaz, Baker Concrete’s executive administrative assistant, reached out to the school and offered to enhance the campus and curriculum, contribute resources and help with any ideas the students had in mind. Company representatives went out to meet with Principal Steven
Williams, dedicated teachers, and Green Team students to determine a suitable project. Environmental Wellness Gardening teacher, Angela Rigdon requested the much-needed wish-list items including gardening aprons and over 200 flowering plants for students to plant, identify, classify, care, and maintain which is part of their studies. A final request was to create a concrete logo of the school mascot in the courtyard that could hold flowers and plants while making a bold and inviting statement. “This beautification project has benefited the students and the school by providing a stimulus for change and improvement,” expressed Rigdon. “Sharing and implementing new ideas and seeing the willingness to go above and beyond is an encouragement to students and staff to ensure a school’s success.” “Driftwood ‘s Green Team consist of 6th-8th graders who want to make a difference in the world. They meet weekly and are given an environmental theme such as reducing energy usage,
water consumption and reducing single-use plastic. The team finds solutions to solve these problems that our community is facing living on the coast,” explained Green Team leader Linda Gancitano. The hard-working students are proud to show off their new concrete flowering bed in the shape of their beloved Cardinal mascot. The school is beyond grateful for Baker Concrete Construction Inc.’s generosity and support. “As an Environmental Health and Wellness school, the gardening class focuses on the emotional and physical benefits of planning, creating, planting, growing, maintaining, harvesting, and understanding how the food is grown can improve a person’s
quality of life. This is incorporated in our curriculum on a daily basis,” added Rigdon.

Holiday Party at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) Made Such an IMPACT! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he world-renowned dialysis unit at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) opened in 2004 and began having holiday parties in 2005 with the first event hosting a handful of patients and families. But, in 2014 Nancy Carranza, a dialysis and transplant social worker at JDCH, had the vision to use the holiday party to connect current dialysis patients/families with past dialysis patients who have been transplanted, so that they might see a light at the end of the tunnel. “The party helps us celebrate the patients’ trust in the renal team, the support of families and friends, and keeps hope for a kidney transplant alive,” said Dr. Alexandru Constantinescu, JDCH pediatric nephrologist.
20 FEBRUARY 2019 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
A couple of years ago, the dedicated social worker asked the JDCH foundation to assist with what was a growing initiative and the IMPACT Ambassadors took on the challenge. Three years ago, this group of young professionals and leaders (under the age of 45) interested in philanthropy, networking and investing in their communities got together to form the IMPACT Young Ambassadors at Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) Foundations. Membership helps spread the word of the importance of having world-class healthcare and access to it through Memorial Healthcare System and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The idea was perfect for this philanthropic and caring bunch to take over the preparation and planning of the holiday party for the dialysis unit at JDCH. This year’s party was the largest ever, with more than 100 attendees, including patients, families,
nurses, and physicians. “I look forward to the dialysis holiday party every year because it gives us a chance to see all the past and current patients. It’s wonderful to celebrate the holiday season not only with them, but with our dialysis team as well. It’s also an avenue for the kids to see each other outside the dialysis unit - to feel like a “normal” child and be able to engage with one another without being restricted to a machine,” exclaimed Carranza. Since the involvement of the IMPACT Ambassadors, the party has doubled in size. The group not only volunteers at the party, they also provided holiday crafts including mini trees, gingerbread houses, gingerbread and snowman ornaments, nail art, a photo booth, and ice cream stations. “Being part of the holiday party allows the dialysis patients and their families a chance to celebrate, enjoy themselves, and create memories that help them forget the chronic medical issues they face. All you see at the event are smiles that warm the heart,” added Christina Shea, IMPACT Ambassador member. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention
Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

ASK THE EXPERT
Lipo Abdominoplasty for Body Sculpting BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
L
ipoabdominoplasty is an advanced technique bringing significant change to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure involves a combination of traditional liposuction with an open skin and fat removal procedure, typically referred to as a tummy tuck. The combination of the two procedures enables the plastic surgeon to better contour and shape the abdomen and the adjacent areas more completely. Patients who have experienced increased skin laxity and excess fat deposition in the abdomen, hips, and waist can now transform their bodies into a more beautiful shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who have excess skin and fat with abdominal weakness, commonly seen after childbirth, weight loss, and with the alterations that are seen with the aging process. Lipoabdominoplasty safely combines suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction) with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal. The fat which is removed via lipoaspiration can be added to other areas of contour deficiency like the buttocks through fat grafting or transfer. This combination reshapes the entire midsection and buttock giving the individual the shapely body contour they desire. The technique should be used with caution in patients who have a history of smoking or previous abdominal surgery and should be performed only by experienced surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prerequisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic features that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improvement a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flatten the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for ‘Mommy Makeovers’ or significant weight loss patients. When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 – 3 hours. Patients should prepare to rest for a minimum of one to two weeks after their procedure. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Hopes and Dreams BY DR. DAVID MURANSKY esides helping South Florida patients for over four decades with chiropractic care, I am also known around town as an up and coming comedian. As “they” say, “laughter is the best medicine”, and I certainly believe it is! Recently, I was honored to perform at a fundraiser on the anniversary of my idol, Rodney Dangerfield. Over the years, I have held a variety of fun events to benefit over 15-20 charities, schools, and organizations. These have included Rotary, Anchors Away, Magic Children’s Fund, Meals on Wheels, The Hepburn Center, Cancer organizations, ORT, Hadassah, High School Scholarship Funds, Make-A-Wish, Gilda’s Club, and so many more. Just to name a few, some of these events have been poker tournaments, walk-a-thons, tennis fast serve and drumming contests, and wine and cheese networking at large facilities. However, I am most proud of hosting the “World’s Smallest and Most Crowded Comedy Club” in my Hollywood chiropractic office. Despite the limited seating, $750 was raised for The American Cancer Society. I am grateful for the other area comics who joined me (Anastasia Pavlinskya, Dan Bell, Amy Tinoco, and AZ) as well as our local sponsors who donated signage, printed items, auction, and raffle gifts, along with great food and desserts. I especially loved the realistic logo brick wall as seen in many comedy clubs made by Signarama of Hollywood. This night was just the beginning of what I hope to achieve one day. I want to open a full-time event facility which would host a variety of programs for people of all ages and interests with affordable prices. But the difference is that my “Dream Facility” will raise thousands and thousands of dollars for the community benefitting schools, students, scholarship funds, veterans, and nonprofit organizations. Additionally, jobs would also be created for students. I was fortunate to start the first elementary school Rotary Club back in 1995, so I do believe I can make this happen with help from other like-minded philanthropic individuals. Once again, I’d like to thank the sponsors that helped make my “Chiropractic Comedy Night” a success: Signarama of Hollywood, Ovadia Law Group. Larry’s Limo Service, Dandee Donut Factory, Thai Best, Pronto Pizza, Uzzi Active Sportswear, Cinque Terre, Viva Brazil, Toni Soldano Beauty Consultant, Jeff Messatt Insurance, Denise Caligiuri from Our City Media, Don Lolo, Lillie Brazil, World’s Greatest Chocolate, Tasta Gelato, and Tasteful Thoughts Chocolate. Also, a shout out to Steve Sarsfield of South Florida Video Productions who filmed the event.

PAIN MANAGEMENT
“KALLIE” Lumbar Spinal Stenosis BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. he lower (lumbar) spine is made up of five vertebrae (bones) bodies in the lower back and is the physical center of the body. These bones are the largest and strongest since they support and carry the weight of the muscles and bones above it. A normal, healthy spine has lumbar vertebrae which stack on top of one another in a centered alignment. However, when one age, the spinal column changes often resulting in a degeneration of the vertebrae, discs, muscles, and connective tissues (ligaments). These changes narrow the open spaces of the lower back and may lead to a condition called lumbar spinal stenosis. Stenosis is derived from the Greek word meaning “to choke”. Therefore, when spinal nerves in the lower back are “choked” lumbar spinal stenosis occurs. If the narrowing is substantial, it compresses the spine putting additional pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves that travel through it. Like other joints in the body, arthritis may occur in the spine as part of the normal aging process. The most common cause of lumbar spinal stenosis are degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis, disc disease, and spondylolisthesis. Osteoarthritis occurs when there is a loss of the cartilage between the bones and joints, formation of bone spurs, and loss of disc height. Further degeneration of the lumbar discs can lead to spondylolisthesis which is when vertebra slip on to one another. Although less common than degenerative arthritis, lumbar spinal stenosis can also be caused by other conditions that reduce the space for the nerves in the spinal canal such as tumors, infection, or bone disorders. Symptoms of lumbar stenosis generally develop slowly over time (most patients are over the age of fifty) and may come and go. Besides lower back pain, one may also have leg and buttocks pain, tingling, a weakness in those areas and numbness or a decreased sensation in the legs. As the symptoms worsen, the condition may become debilitating. Some patients may find cramping in the legs when standing for long periods or even when walking. The pain usually subsides when resting, sitting, or bending forward. Each person will find the severity and duration of the condition different which will dictate the approach for treatment. A physical examination alone does not yield a definitive diagnosis. An imaging study must be done by an MRI scan, or a CT scan with myelogram (an x-ray dye in the spinal sack fluid) to determine which of the three types of stenosis is identified. Treatments vary per individual and the conservative (non-surgical) ones may include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, exercise, and/or epidural injections. Of course, surgery will be discussed when all other nonsurgical methods have failed. A surgical procedure is most reliable for the relief of leg pain and not necessarily back pain. A surgery may include a lumbar decompression with or without a lumbar fusion.

ose “Flaco” Perez never ceases to amaze the community with his generous efforts and his big heart. To start the new year off right, he created a new program to address the nationwide epidemic of “bullying”. He decided there was no one better to collaborate efforts with than longtime supporter and friend Eddie Aguilar, Principal of Oakridge Elementary School. Together, to correct, prevent, and eradicate “bullying” amongst youth, the “Boxing (Anti-Bullying) Club” was born. The 4-week program will be taking place at Oakridge Elementary School for two hours a week. Upon completion, students will be presented with a certification ceremony Flaco’s Community Gym. “Bullying has detrimental effects on all of the kids and the people surrounding them. The concept of the program is to instill a sense of awareness, confidence, strength, discipline, presence, and self-confidence,” explained Perez. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, “Flaco” learned first-hand how difficult the challenges are when facing bullies. He hopes his experience, technique, and tools to confront such painful encounters will empower his participating students and make a
difference in their lives. “It’s hard enough growing up and trying to find yourself as it is and it’s even harder when a child gets bullied and feels isolated and alone. The ironic thing is that it’s not always the obvious kid who appears weak that gets bullied. A lot of times it is someone who may seem confident and relatively ‘cool’ that becomes a target,” expressed “Flaco”. “Many times, it isn’t the weakest person who gets picked on, and of course, it’s not the strongest person either, it’s the ones in the middle. This is because there’s no reward for picking on the weak ones, and they’re scared of the stronger individuals. The result is kids in that middle area that become targets which really hurts their confidence.”
Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals
will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

The benevolent gym owner’s mission is for all children to gain self-esteem, learn their value, and show their capabilities. The guidance of the program will prepare the students to handle all attackers whether it be foreign or within, and confidence is the key. “We need to build up our communities again and focus internally not externally. We need to go back to a time when everyone knew each other’s names, your neighbor was your shoemaker, your family, and your friend. That’s when society was good and when the world was a better place, and if making those connections can start with little guys like me, I want to do my part,” added “Flaco”.
MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Fall in Love with Valentine’s Safety Tips BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM
Y
ou may have seen the invasion of heart-shaped chocolates lining the grocery store aisles, along with an army of stuffed animals and oversized cards. Book those dinner reservations, stock up on romantic candles and pick a nice bottle of wine, it is nearly Valentine’s Day. What better holiday to go on a first date than on the “Day of Love”; Countless singles are looking for love in all kinds of places – even online. It’s important to care about your safety during Valentine’s Day as much as you would any day. Though it may not seem particularly dangerous, there are many important Valentine’s Day safety tips you may want to add to your date plans come February 14th: ▸▸ Candles: Do not overdo the candles. Although we do not doubt the romantic power of candlelit dinners, be sure to never leave an open flame unattended. Ensure all flames are safely placed from flammable fabrics and are not directly under objects that may catch fire. More quickly than you expect, a candle can fall over and invite disaster. ▸▸ Alcohol: Another holiday, another excuse to have an extra drink or two. Please enjoy drinks responsibly and ensure that you do not drink and drive. Drinking and driving, even if “only tipsy”, lowers a driver’s reaction time and judgement. Getting behind the wheel after drinking not only puts the driver at risk, but everyone else who is on the road, including pedestrians and cyclists. ▸▸ Gifting: Some love going all out for their “Valentine”, buying lavish gifts on top of the usual candies and flowers. Unfortunately, gift-giving holidays are also prime opportunities for thieves to strike. Protect yourself by never leaving gift bags or boxes near windows or in cars, where they are easily visible to passersby. ▸▸ Protect your home when you’re away: Another popular option is a romantic weekend getaway, but the problem with that is potential burglars know that too, making Valentine’s Day an opportune time to break into homes. To be safe, be sure to have friends, family or neighbors check on your home and don’t post your getaway details on social media until you return. ▸▸ Be Careful on Your First Date: First dates come with a rush of excitement but remember to stay on your guard as you meet your date for the first time especially if you met online; you want to be sure that they are actually who they claim to be. ▸▸ Meet in public. ▸▸ Choose your own transportation. ▸▸ Don’t drink too much and don’t leave your drink unattended. ▸▸ Let your friends know about your plans and whereabouts beforehand so you feel safer. Though Valentine’s Day safety may seem secondary to setting a romantic mood for that special someone, never let a holiday become an excuse to bypass the safety standards you keep throughout the year. From the men and women of the North Miami Beach Police Department, we wish you a safe and happy Valentine’s Day! For emergencies, please dial 9-1-1 and all other non-emergencies, please call (305) NMBPOLICE or (305) 662-7654.
