ebruary 14, 2018, is a date that will forever be etched in all our minds, just like 9-11. It is virtually impossible to come across a person in the community who wasn’t personally impacted by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Seventeen innocent people – 14 students along with three faculty members – lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. Fifteen additional people were wounded. It is hard for anyone to reconcile what happened with any sense of normalcy or justice. There are many questions still unanswered: How could someone become filled with such hate and rage? Why do we allow teenagers to easily purchase assault weapons? How can we keep our children safe? What keeps us going, however, is what we’ve heard from the friends and family of the victims: we, as a community, are better off having known them. They were coaches who rushed to the aid of defenseless students; seniors with aspirations for higher education; freshman just beginning to discover who they are; athletes; band members; and, most importantly, they were fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and friends. As we slowly start to piece together our new normal, let us never forget the 17 innocent lives lost, along with the thousands of survivors who will forever bear both physical and emotional scars from that fateful day. In the hours and days following the attack, our community rallied together. Now that the days have turned to weeks, we must continue to band together and show our support to the Parkland community. The Eagles will soar once more.

The City of Excellence Presents a Taste of Excellence BY BEVERLY PERKINS

R

esidents know that it’s springtime in South Florida when the days get longer, and the traffic gets lighter. Additionally, out-of-state license plates become obsolete, and sadly stone crab season comes to an end. Colorful trees are in bloom, but so is the pollen. Grasshoppers are a nuisance, but the butterflies and birds remind us of the beauty and abundance of nature surrounding our frequently traveled to destination. Days are a bit warmer, but spring nights cool down to just the right temperature for outdoor activities. This being so, the City of Aventura is excited to announce…Taste of Excellence. The new spring event will feature an evening filled with wine, cheese and jazz under the stars at Arthur Snyder Park. The park is adjacent to the Community Recreation Center located at 3375 NE 188th Street. The free event will be held on Saturday, April 14th from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm. “The venue which happens to be along a canal has a beautiful water view, and is perfect for sipping wine, indulging in delicious food, and listening to amazing music,” says Kimberly Merchant, City of Aventura Community Services

Director. “The ambiance we hope to provide will be the perfect social setting for a Saturday night.” A local catering company will create multiple stations with a variety of samplings for the public to enjoy. Wine, cheese, and crepes will be available for purchase. Besides great food, the South Florida Jazz Orchestra (SFJO) will perform live jazz and vocals throughout the evening. The modern Big Band is comprised of some of the best Jazz musicians, educators, and studio musicians in the southeastern part of the United States. The band members have had the experience and opportunity to perform and tour with many of the greatest artists in Jazz and Popular music including Paul Anka and Frank Sinatra. Parking will be available at the Community Recreation Center and at the Harbour Centre located at the intersection of 29th Avenue and 188 Street. Complimentary shuttle buses will be run continuously from the Harbour Centre and the Community Recreation Center. “I am looking forward to the community coming out for a wonderful evening at a beautiful location,” exclaimed Susan Grant, City of Aventura City Manager. 25-Year Veteran Miami Dolphin Tackles Cancer with the DCC BY BEVERLY PERKINS

L

ast month marked the eighth edition of the Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC). The popular highly anticipated community event is the largest fundraiser in the NFL. The DCC donates 100 percent of participant-raised funds for innovative cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The DCC VIII weekend encompassed five bike routes, a run/walk 5K, and a celebration concert by the Goo Goo Dolls with Big Head Todd and The Monsters. Hundreds came out to participate, support, and celebrate loved ones including North Miami Beach resident, DCC board member, and Dolphins alumni, Nat Moore. The celebrated 13-year NFL offensive player watched his former teammate, Jim “Maddog” Mandich fight against cancer. His battle was the inspiration for starting the DCC, and everyone was honored to have him at the inaugural event. Unfortunately, he lost his fight a few short months later. “I fight for him. I want to do everything in my power to continue the legacy and work he started in trying to have one of the top cancer treatment centers in the world. And it’s right here in our backyard. That is why I participate in DCC – anything I can do to eradicate this terrible disease, I want to be a part of,” added Moore. “And it’s truly in the DNA of the Dolphins to be part of this community. In the seven years this event has been in place – the Dolphins have taken this platform, made it the largest fundraiser in the NFL, given $22.5 million that stays right here in the South Florida community. It goes directly to Sylvester and we’re seeing the living proof day in and day out of the strides being made. We’re all Cancer Fighters and that’s why DCC means so much to me.” For additional information, call (305) 943-6799 or visit www. DolphinsCancerChallenge.com.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, ne needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. It Was Mad Science at the Hochberg Preparatory 4th Annual Science Night BY BEVERLY PERKINS

R

ight before the holidays, Hochberg Preparatory School (Posnack Jewish Day School’s East Campus) presented their 4th Annual Science Night. Unlike typical science fairs with poster displays and charts and graphs, Hochberg’s science night was completely a hands-on event. The goal was to bring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) to life by having active participants, not observers. “Through brainstorming and competition, we teach the students to think outside the box and come up with ingenuous solutions to real problems. As educators, we believe this is really important to get them excited about all different areas of science,” said Dr. Richard Cuenca, Head of School, Posnack Jewish Day School. Attendees of all ages were able to participate at various stations which were run by faculty and school alumni (Middle school students who graduated to the Posnack Jewish Day School campus). Some of the interactive stations included: live animals, such as bearded dragons, porcupines, hamsters, and turtles; robots that students could interact with and program; science experiments to explore sound waves, the sense of taste, and the biology of the human body;

Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals

will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

and opportunities for students to build and create Lego models and solar ovens. “We think this is really important to get the students excited about all different areas of science,” said Diana Sturisky, Hochberg Preparatory PTO Chair. Hochberg Preparatory offers an Exploratorium STEM program to all of their students from Kindergarten to 5th grade. The program enriches the core studies that they perform in the classroom by offering an advanced program for science, math and technology. The Exploratorium is a Pitsco and Lego curriculum that teaches students to solve age appropriate problems using Legos and teamwork. This integrates practical problem solving and mechanical engineering into their curriculum, and eventually, the students use coding to get the Legos to move and perform tasks. “Science today is so much more than just test tubes and beakers. We believe we have the only exploratorium program in this area that exposes our kids from an early age to problem solving, engineering concepts and coding with hands-on team and individual projects!” exclaims Dayna Wald, Principal, Hochberg Preparatory School.

Outstanding Students Receive Merit-Based Scheck Hillel Scholarships BY BEVERLY PERKINS

P

arents, staff, and faculty were beaming with pride as five outstanding Scheck Hillel Community School students received merit-based scholarships through the school’s Jaime and Raquel Gilinski Hillel Ambassador Program. Myles Gilbert (Grade 10), Matias Lancewicki (Grade 11), Lauren Rub (Grade 12), Ilana Stiberman (Grade 9) and Abraham Woldenberg (Grade 11) were recognized at the 2017-18 Jaime and Raquel Gilinski Hillel Ambassador Program recognition ceremony and student assembly before the winter break, when they celebrated along with their families, students and alumni who were named Ambassadors in previous years, representing nine generations of this prestigious program. “We congratulate Myles, Matias, Lauren, Ilana, Abraham and their families,” said Dr. Ezra Levy, Scheck Hillel’s Head of School. “The Gilinski Hillel Ambassador Program recognizes excellence and leadership, and these students are the best representation of it. We are grateful for Jaime and Raquel Gilinski’s stewardship of this Ambassador program and for their commitment to Jewish education.” The rigorous annual application requires students to write short essays, produce a video and formulate a resume; finalists advance to a panel interview. These five students were named from a pool of nearly 80 applicants in spring 2017. “The Gilinski Hillel Ambassador program provides an incredible opportunity for our school community to recognize excellence in our students.” said Andrew Buttler, Faculty Advisor for the Gilinski Hillel Ambassador Program. “Every year, applicants go through a lengthy, multifaceted application process that identifies five outstanding Scheck Hillel students for the merit-based scholarship as well

as opportunities for leadership development and community action. We are very proud of all the students who applied and congratulate our newest generation of Gilinski Hillel Ambassadors that joined this outstanding circle of leaders.” The program created by Jaime and Raquel Gilinski recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to education and Scheck Hillel, encouraging lifelong learning and leadership that continuity requires. Ambassadors showcase the Scheck Hillel mission through accomplishment and talent - in the classroom, on the field, on stage or through community service. “As Gilinski Hillel Ambassadors, we are granted a platform to put our ideas into action for the benefit of our school and community. It is an honor to serve in this capacity,” said 12th grade award recipient Lauren Rub. The Gilinski Hillel Ambassador Program has been recognizing exceptional students since 2009; Ambassadors have graduated to Ivy leagues and top tier schools such as The University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, University of Miami, University of Florida, Columbia University, Vanderbilt University, University of Michigan, among others. As alumni, college students and young professionals, they carry the lifelong title of Gilinski Hillel Ambassador. The 2018-2019 application will open in spring 2018. ASK THE EXPERT

The Facts on Spinal Stenosis BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.

T

he spinal column has open spaces that create passageways for the spinal cord and the spinal nerves. However, a serious condition occurs when the spinal column narrows thus putting pressure on the spinal column and nerves. This painful compression of the nerves is known as spinal stenosis. The pressure that occurs can cause pain, weakness and numbness, and is most common in the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine since the spinal column can narrow at any point from the head to the tailbone, including the center of the spine. This is where nerves branch out from the spinal cord, and in spaces between the vertebrae. The cause of spinal stenosis is commonly caused by excess growth of the bone around the spinal nerves which is the result of osteoarthritis. It can also result from a dislocation or a fracture of the vertebral bone, or by soft tissue intruding into the spine’s open spaces. Other culprits are herniated discs, tumors, and thickened spinal ligaments which press against the spinal nerves. ▸▸ Some conditions and illnesses tend to affect mostly men or women, but spinal stenosis does not discriminate. Both men and women may be affected by the condition. The primary cause is arthritis and aging, and equal numbers of men and women experience spinal stenosis. ▸▸ Patients over 50 years of age are the typical candidates for the condition. Very few patients under the age of 30 are diagnosed with spinal stenosis. If so, the cause is usually trauma to the spine from an external force, such as an auto accident. ▸▸ Spinal stenosis may be inherited. While spinal stenosis is mostly caused through the aging process, the condition can be passed down from one generation to the next. Associated conditions include scoliosis and achondroplasia. ▸▸ The location of spinal stenosis is related to where symptoms present in the body. Patients will feel numbness, pain, and tingling depending on where the spine narrows. If the lower part of the spine is affected, symptoms will present in the legs; if the spine narrows higher up, there will be symptoms in the arms. ▸▸ Surgery is not necessary to treat spinal stenosis. Symptoms vary depending on the location and severity. Pain can radiate down the back, arms, and legs, indicating that there is a problem. The development of spinal stenosis can affect a person’s involuntary and voluntary functions, such as breathing, walking, and even bladder and bowel control. Spinal stenosis in the lower back usually causes sciatica. Treatment options may include anti-inflammatory pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, muscle relaxants, or other pain relief medications. Physical therapy may also be recommended as stretching and adjusting posture may alleviate some pain and help patients get relief from the discomfort associated with spinal stenosis. Simple flexing and stretching of the spinal column can also help elongate and enlarge the narrow segments and provide relief. Surgery may be required for patients who experience chronic discomfort and pain, especially if the bladder and bowels are compromised or if these other methods are not effective. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 340, Aventura, 33180. To schedule an appointment, please call (305)932-1660.

How Does Dementia Affect Executive Functioning?

Pest Control & Termite Professionals No-TeNT TermiTe TreaTmeNT

BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES

A

person with dementia often experiences issues related to executive functioning. Planning, problem solving and executing tasks are all elements of executive functioning. These are all skills needed to complete many tasks related to finances and bill paying. Even if a person is not displaying significant issues with memory, there could be problems with the executive functioning. And often this is one of the first signs that family members notice. There are several indicators to look for that your loved one may be having some difficulty. Early in the disease, the person may need longer to figure out the amount to pay when out to a restaurant. Calculating the tip becomes more challenging. When paying in cash, processing the bills and change to put out might require more time than usual. In one example, a gentleman was paying his bill at the register and was using cash. The total came to $21.52. While going through his money, he knew that he needed to leave one of one kind of bill (a $20) and two of another ($1.00 bills). However, the gentleman took several seconds going through his bills and ended up giving the cashier two $20.00 bills and one $1.00 bill instead. The processing and planning difficulty is common. Bill paying takes many of the skills related to executive functioning, therefore, this is an aspect of the person’s life that should be looked at. Paying the bill late or not paying the correct amount are common mistakes that are made. In addition, checks not being signed or filled out completely are other issues seen frequently in persons with dementia. Having a legal representative named is a step that needs to occur for most adults, especially those with some cognitive issues. If this has not been completed, an elder law attorney can be of assistance. The Power of Attorney can act on behalf of the person as needed and in most cases, can have communication with banks, other financial institutions, and companies. It is important to provide help to your loved one, but also to maintain their dignity. Giving up financial control is a difficult step in the disease. Having a conversation with the person about the importance of financial security may be the first step and then to offer assistance. Family members often take away the task completely which may leave the person feeling diminished. Perhaps set up a day or two a month to pay bills together. This will allow the person to maintain independence but assuring that the bills are paid properly. If there are more difficulties, you may consider having the bills mailed directly to you to be certain that they are not being misplaced. It may be necessary for a family member to write out the bills and then have the person sign them. And as the disease progresses, the task will most likely need to be completed solely by the responsible party.

Families that don’t have the time or finances to travel during Spring Break can get most of the benefits while staying close to home. Families can 26 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYAVENTURA.COM

hooks into the water and waiting for a bite. Many Broward County Parks allow and encourage fishing. Be sure to have the appropriate licenses. For more info on fishing licenses check out www.myfwc.com.

What better thing is there to do in South Florida when the kids are off school than go to the beach? There is certainly something for everyone: Hollywood Beach’s 1920s-style oceanfront promenade Broadwalk will appeal the nostalgic; Laid-back Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a great place to spend the day eating ice cream, reading a book and enjoying a less-busy existence; Pompano Beach offers terrific shopping and dining; the kids could watch mighty cruise ships set sail at Fort Lauderdale Beach; or, families can get away from it all at the John U. Lloyd Beach Sate Park. If you can’t get away, be sure to make this Spring Break one the remember anyway.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Preventing Vehicle Thefts BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM

V

ehicle and/or Car-related thefts are among the most common offenses calling for police response. These thefts fall into two categories. Each category of theft covers a wide range of offenses committed by different groups of offenders with different motivations. Thefts of vehicles include thefts for joyriding, thefts for prolonged car use, thefts for export, and/or “chopping” (disassembling cars for spare parts). Thefts of cars are much more reported to the police due to insurance requirements, and the fact that the police might help find stolen cars that are later abandoned. Offenders target all kinds of vehicles for theft whereas car-related thefts occur on residential streets, driveways and parking facilities. Thefts from vehicles include thefts of items left inside of vehicles, thefts of interior components such as radios and/or batteries, airbags and thefts of external parts (i.e., wheels). The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reports more than 75,000 thefts of airbags on an annual basis.

Security

▸▸ Improve Lighting: Most thefts from vehicles in residential neighborhoods occur at night because this is when most cars are present in the communities. Also, this is because of the anonymity that darkness provides. A review of a Our City Media 3/18 Crossword study found that offenders targeted cars in residential areas for theft; eighty percent (80%) of potential burglars limited their activities to the hours of darkness. Well-lit streets and homes increase the risk of detection and can act as a deterrent to would-be offenders. Therefore, we encourage homeowners to install and utilize additional lighting around their homes to deter thieves/burglars. ▸▸ Remove Vegetation and Other Covers: Ill-tended shrubbery provides cover for thieves. Therefore, we encourage property owners to remove such vegetation and/or modify structures such as carports or any other features that can help reduce the occurrence of theft.

Education

▸▸ Alert Car Owners about Theft Problems and Effective Prevention: While trying to determine the local vehicle theft problems within the community, it was found that car owners often do not secure their personal property as well as they should. Consequently, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) spearheaded publicity campaigns which consisted mainly in distributing information flyers and brochures to residences in areas experiencing such vehicle burglaries.

Enforcement

▸▸ Increased Patrol: When crime analysis data demonstrate a clear pattern of thefts in certain locations and at certain times, the NMBPD increases patrol whereas unmarked patrol units are used to monitor the area, to track and identity suspicious individuals within the neighborhood and its surrounding areas. Among the most important messages that is conveyed to car owners is the following: if car owners must park their vehicles on the street, then the investment of an after-market security systems, especially those that are visible to the thief, is probably worth more than losing any personal items and/or their vehicle.
