People Are People Wherever You Go
W
e have had the fortune to travel all around the world over the past twenty years. In fact, we have lived in the English countryside, in the urban mega-city of Hong Kong, in swanky Nashville, and in the suburbs of Atlanta. In addition to living in those places, we have visited many more, and seen people of all walks of life: from villagers in rural Thailand to wealthy Europeans vacationing in the Canary Islands. What has been remarkable, throughout our travels, is not the differences we share, but how surprisingly similar people truly are. Don’t get us wrong, there are certainly differences in culture everywhere. A dining delicacy in one country is often considered gross, or worse, in another. However, most people we have met have been primarily focused on the same few values: a safe, peaceful place to raise a family; a sense of pride or validation in their endeavors or occupation; a source of relief from the stresses of our modern world; and belonging to a community. In an era where the twin pressures of globalization and technological innovation often push us in uncomfortable directions and division, it is helpful to remember that there is likely a family just like yours in Nairobi or Singapore or Tehran with ambitions and dreams not too different than the family right next door. The 2nd Annual Free Our Seas Environmental Art Festival Celebrates Earth Day BY BEVERLY PERKINS

t’s no “sea”cret that the city of Hollywood has the greatest community filled with art and activists. So, it was no surprise that a group of passionate, determined, ocean-loving friends got together a couple of years ago to raise awareness of the impact plastic pollution has on our local beaches. The enthusiastic and talented bunch named themselves, “Free Our Seas and Beyond’, and they made their debut in the city’s annual Candy Cane Parade with their artistic beach

Wiese. “The experience awakened the idea to harness the power of art to stimulate curiosity, connect with the environment, shine a light on innovative solutions while inspiring and educating to create change.” From curating environmental art festivals to partnering with local schools, Free Our Seas collaborates with a variety of like-minded community partners to raise awareness, create solutions, inspire, and mobilize people of all ages to take ownership and action for a clean and healthy planet all in an effort to reduce the use of plastics. “As I comb the beaches each morning, more of the flotsam and jetsam of modern life is increasingly showing up in the sand,” added Wiese. “We are able to transform ugly plastic litter and debris into thought-provoking pieces of art. Reusing these materials aids in educating the public about single-use plastic” like plastic straws, bottle caps, and cutlery.” The organization invites everyone to the 2nd Annual Free Our Seas Environmental Art Festival on Hollywood Beach on April 20th. The focus of the festival is to

lmost 200 guests attended the 11th Annual Glam Goes Surreal fundraiser at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood. The contemporary art gallery was transformed into a night lounge featuring a world of the offbeat and fantastic, fabulous cuisine, decadent desserts, music, dancing, entertainment, and plenty of silent auction items such as hotel stays and restaurant certificates. Attendees also got a sneak preview of Exposed Exhibition and Fundraiser. Additionally, they viewed Hidden Color by Christian Feneck and If I Can’t See You from Here by Ingrid Schindall and Sammi McLean, along with features by Christopher Byrd and

he “25th annual Conine All-Star Golf Classic” was in full swing a couple of months ago at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club in Plantation. For the 8th year in a row, the tournament was a complete sell out (144 players), with all available foursomes and individual spots taken. The annual event raised more than $250,000 to underwrite expenses at the Conine Clubhouse at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Celebrity attendees included: Pudge Rodriguez, Ki-Jana Carter, Tony Nathan, Chris Chambers, Gaby Sanchez, Shawn Wooden, Heathcliff Slocumb, Bob Brudzinski, Troy Drayton, Rick Ankiel, and many others. Since 1995, fundraising done at this tournament by Jeff and Cindy Conine has raised more than

The hotel-like facility alleviates additional stress by allowing families complimentary lodging (based on availability) in a beautiful, comfortable, and nurturing environment during a child’s hospital stay. “In South Florida and when I’m traveling, I get stopped all the time by people who have stayed at the Conine Clubhouse while their child was being treated at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. they don’t know what they would have done if they didn’t have the opportunity to stay there and how much peace it brought them knowing they were just a moment away from their child during such difficult times. That’s why we do what we do,” expressed Jeff Conine, former major league ballplayer. The residence obtains funding through the annual “Conine All-Star Golf Classic”, as well as through planned gifts and individual donations to the nonprofit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. “For 25 years, Jeff and Cindy Conine have gone above and beyond for kids and families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Tackling Cancer One Round at a Time BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he Miami Dolphins look forward to its ninth edition of their signature event, the Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC). On April 6th, thousands of cancer fighters will run, bike, walk, volunteer and donate their time throughout South Florida. Since 2010, the initiative has raised more than 27.5 million dollars. One hundred percent of the funds raised go directly to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Health System for critical cancer research. The annual event has proven itself to be the largest event fundraiser in the NFL and to kick it off in true Dolphins fashion, the DCC hosted its “Fourth Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament” presented by Moss Construction at JW Marriott Miami Turnberry’s two 18-hole championship courses in early February. The tournament offered cancer fighters a chance to golf and interact with Miami Dolphins executives, players, alumni, T.D. and other celebrity guests. Golfers teed off for a round of scramble-golf on the world-famous
Soffer and Miller Courses, home to a number of LPGA and PGA events, then enjoyed the post-event 19th hole celebration presented by BBVA Compass. Special guests at the event included Miami Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores, Vice Chair, President & CEO Tom Garfinkel and General Manager Chris Grier. Also, in participation were Dolphins players Jake Brendel, John Denney, Davon Godchaux,

Looking Back and Looking Forward BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY Fellow Hollywood Residents, Thank you for your continuing interest in the success of our city. Ninety-three years have passed since our city’s founding in 1925, and 2019 is set to be another exciting year in our city’s history, both in terms of our continuing to advance improvements in the delivery of city services, and in terms of the long-range investments that we are looking to make to further improve the enjoyment, safety, and quality of life for all of us here in Hollywood.
Highlights of 2018: ▸▸ The city’s economy had a record year, with record-low unemployment and the highest ever total taxable property value of $16.4 Billion, with an appreciation rate that is highest among Broward’s large cities, and the reinvestment we are seeing and encouraging continues. ▸▸ We modernized the software and processes of the City’s Building Department so that your building permits get issued faster, with better customer service and with online-permitting now made available for the 20 most common homeowner building permits. This work continues. ▸▸ We implemented new CCTV and other technologies to aid our Police Department in its work, with crime continuing to decrease year over year. Thanks to HPD and Fire Rescue for all they do. ▸▸ We installed new LED streetlights city-wide, for a brighter, more environmentallyfriendly and safer city at night. Some areas have unique circumstances and will be completed in 2019. ▸▸ We took action to reduce the use of non-biodegradable polystyrene and plastics on Hollywood Beach. Speaking of the beach, Hollywood beach continues to be one of the top-rated beaches in America, with more and more visitors coming to enjoy our hotels, restaurants and the beauty of our beach than ever before. ▸▸ We began an official engagement with Broward County Schools to enhance educational opportunity in Hollywood, with an initial focus on K-8 opportunities. ▸▸ We created a Homeless Task Force of community stakeholders and Police to help do our part in getting the homeless reunited with their families or otherwise rehoused and back on their feet. ▸▸ Lastly, and perhaps most historically significant, we concluded a far-reaching Interlocal Agreement with Broward County which will usher in an 18-year period of significant reinvestment into Hollywood’s older neighborhoods through existing home rehab programs, first-time homebuyer programs, neighborhood infrastructure improvements and much more. Considering Removing Your Breast Implants? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. espite the evidence that breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure that results in higher patient satisfaction with their breasts and enhanced psychological wellbeing, an increasing number of women are electing to remove their breast implants. In 2017, more than 45,000 breast implant removal procedures were performed – a twenty percent increase over the previous three years. The impetus to undergo breast explantation is multi-factorial, ranging from implant related complications like implant rupture, hardening (capsular contracture) or breast pain, to large breasts with size dissatisfaction to autoimmune symptoms which patient’s attribute to their breast implants. After the implant is removed, the breast can appear empty or “deflated.” To avoid this unaesthetic result, the breast can be lifted (mastopexy) and volume can be restored with the patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer) or by rearranging or reshaping the breast with adjacent breast tissue, a socalled augmentation. All these techniques have been shown to be successful in plastic surgical literature. When the implants are removed, patients are often pleased with the aesthetic outcome and report very high patient satisfaction rates. Additionally, in a Journal of Immunologic research in February 2017, it was noted that in numerous studies, patients with symptoms of breast pain, muscle aches, and fatigue, those symptoms were reduced once the implants and capsules were removed. In this same article, blood markers for autoimmune disease were unchanged after implant removal in the majority of patients. There is an extensive body of medical literature demonstrating that breast augmentation with both saline and silicone implants is safe without a direct link to autoimmune disease. The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a highly personal one, and therefore treatment options should be individualized based on each person’s unique aesthetic goals. If you are considering breast augmentation, a breast implant exchange or replacement, or implant removal, it is important to discuss your goals with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Signs, Symptoms & Help for Rheumatoid Arthritis BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder which affects the lining of the joints, causing painful swelling. Ultimately, over time, rheumatoid arthritis may result in bone erosion and joint deformity. The autoimmune illness occurs when the immune system wrongly attacks its own body’s tissues. The inflammation can eventually destroy the cartilage and bone within the joint. The tendons and ligaments that hold the joint together will then weaken and stretch. Gradually, the joint will lose its shape and alignment. Doctors are still not certain of why this process may occur, although a genetic component appears likely. While the genes don’t actually cause rheumatoid arthritis, they can make one more susceptible. Viral and bacterial infections may trigger the disease as well as other risk factors including sex, age, family history, smoking, environmental exposures, and obesity. Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include: ▸▸ Tender, warm, and swollen joints ▸▸ Joint stiffness ▸▸ Fatigue, fever and weight loss These may vary in severity and may even come and go. These “flares” alternate with intensity, and then fade or disappear for a while. It’s been known that early signs rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect your smaller joints first. These being the joints that attach your fingers to your hands and your toes to your feet. As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders. In most cases, symptoms occur in the same joints on both sides of your body. About 40 percent of the people who have rheumatoid arthritis also experience signs and symptoms that don’t involve the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many non-joint structures, including skin, eyes, lungs, heart, kidneys, salivary glands, nerve tissue, bone marrow, and blood vessels. Unfortunately, there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis. But recent discoveries indicate that remission of symptoms is more likely when treatment begins early with strong medications known as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Therapy is also an option, as physical or occupational therapists can teach exercises to help keep joints flexible. Alternative medicine has also been found to be a popular treatment. These may include taking fish and plant oils along with practicing the Chinese martial art of Tai chi, which has been known to reduce pain. If all medications and all other options fail to prevent or slow joint damage, surgery may be considered. Rheumatoid arthritis surgery may involve one or more of the following procedures: tendon repair, joint fusion, total joint replacement, and/or synovectomy (removal of the joint lining). It is recommended to see a doctor if you have persistent discomfort and swelling in your joints. While new types of medications have improved treatment options dramatically, severe rheumatoid arthritis can still cause physical disabilities if not treated. Edward J. Most people believe they are too smart to fall for a scam, but con artists rob all types of people – from doctors to lawyers to teenagers and the elderly – of billions of dollars a year. REMEMBER – if something is too good to be true, it probably is! ▸▸ Never provide your social insurance number, credit card number, bank card number, or any other personal information over the phone, through email, or social media unless you have taken steps to 100% verify it is legitimate. ▸▸ Do not use the links provided in an email that appears to be from a known company or institution. Go to the official website and begin your communication from there. ▸▸ Take the time to verify a company, charity, or a certain person, product, or service is legitimate. ▸▸ Investigate before you invest. Never make an investment with a stranger over the phone. ▸▸ Beware of promises that include the terms “get rich quick” or “once in a lifetime opportunity”. ▸▸ Fraudulent charities often use names that sound like a reputable, well-known organization such as the American Cancer Association instead of the American Cancer Society – Ask for a financial report before you donate; a reputable charity will always send you one. ▸▸ Around this time of year, unscrupulous people may be calling to try and take advantage of residents by threatening them with fines and jail time for money they supposedly owe the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Everyone should be aware that the IRS does not call you at home with threats. The agency will communicate via the U.S. Postal Service with a letter regarding any tax owed or refund due. Never give out personal information to these callers nor offer to pay. Make note of the caller ID, hang up and go online to report the incident at treasury.gov. ▸▸ Be cautious when using free Wi-Fi. When making purchases or conducting your banking wirelessly, make sure you are using a secure Wi-Fi_33 connection. ▸▸ Monitor card and account statements frequently. ▸▸ There are two (2) simple signs that you’re secure while shopping online. So many came out to the festive celebration with silly competitions, raffles, and more all to benefit the Hollywood Council of Civic Associations (HCCA) “Pete Brewer Scholarship Fund”.

School hosted its 2019 Annual Event to benefit the school’s Kulanu Scholarship Fund. This year’s theme, “Thursday Night Live”, featured comedian Elon Gold, famous for his roles on TV and his recent Netflix special. Nearly 400 supporters attended the event, including many community leaders. Nearly 20% of Scheck Hillel students receive tuition assistance through the Kulanu Scholarship Fund, which is funded solely by donors.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO… - Scheck Hillel Community School has won two awards in the “2019 National Platinum Awards Category of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District III Awards Competition”. The Award of Excellence was garnered for digital media production, and a set of classroom Pledge of Allegiance posters was ribboned with a Special Merit award. Both awards celebrate the school’s creative media and graphic design, produced entirely by members of the school’s Advancement office, specifically Creative Manager Greg Feldman and Graphic Designer Vanessa Margulis.
