Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals

will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

nce Upon a Time, a brave tween hoped for a “Royal Ball Glitter Gala” to celebrate her birthday. The 11-year-old was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (an incorrectly formed heart). Her cardiologist recommended her to Make-A-Wish ® Southern Florida with hopes that they would make his young patient’s wish come true. The Hollywood family was ecstatic to receive a call from the non-profit foundation saying that they wanted to grant Angelina Uzdavines’ wish. Lifechanging wishes are granted for children and that have critical illnesses as well as their family. There is never any cost or obligation to them either. Typically, there are five types of wish requests: “I wish to be” (something), “I wish to meet” (someone),

“I wish to go” (somewhere), “I wish to have” (something), and “I wish to give” (something). The average cost of a wish in southeast Florida is $5,000 with the most popular being a visit to Walt Disney World ®. However, this princess didn’t have to travel very far as her fairy tale ball was held at one of South Florida’s iconic landmarks. More than 100 people watched Angelina arrive at The Biltmore in a horse-drawn carriage complete with glitter and ribbons to match her ball gown. So many friends and family showed their love and support as they walked the red carpet to the fairy talethemed bash at the most perfect venue. “It’s been an emotional ride since we found out about Angelina’s condition even before she was born. Every step of the way has had new challenges and uncertainty. It’s a hard road, so to have a glimmer of joy through it all and to be able to see the joy on her face because of what Make-A-Wish ® Southern Florida has done has filled my heart,” exclaimed Angelina’s father, Michael Uzdavines, Angelina and her family received special treatment as they had a professional hair and makeup team, assistance with wardrobe, and a party with plenty of food, desserts, candy bar, music, and more all fit for a queen. “The wishes we grant aren’t just nice, they’re nec-

Research shows the anticipation of a wish and memories made during them can have a positive and significant impact on the health and well-being of the children, families, and extended networks we reach,” explained Norman Wedderburn, president & CEO, Make-A-Wish ® Southern Florida. “Make-A-Wish ® made her wish come true and more! They don’t even know her, and they did it from the kindness of their hearts, and you don’t see that anymore. I’m going to look back and say, everyone did that for my little girl,” added Angelina’s mother, Marilyn Uzdavines. he Art and Culture Center/Hollywood will celebrate its 22nd Annual Cuisine for Art on Thursday, May 16th at the Event Center at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino from 6:00 pm- 9:00 pm. The anticipated event raises funding for the Center’s programming while recognizing an individual or company who contributes to the South Florida community. In addition to the complimentary wine, beer, bourbon, vodka cocktails, live entertainment, and a three-course dinner served by celebrity waiters featuring elected officials and community leaders, the evening will honor South Florida’s very own Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist and writer Dave Barry. or the past 36 years, the Dr. Nan S. Hutchison Broward Senior Hall of Fame has recognized seniors, age 60 and older, for their volunteer excellence, for five or more years, in Broward County. Since its inception over four hundred seniors have been elected for the prestigious honor. The new group of nominees will be recognized at the 36th Annual Nan S. Hutchison Broward Senior Hall of Fame Breakfast on May 10th during Older Americans Month. Two months ago, the 2019 Hall of Fame Election Committee, chaired by Mayor Mark Bogen, met at the Aging & Disability Resource Center to elect the Hall of Fame newest members. The ten new Hall of Famers join the other volunteer elders for a total of 419 elected since 1978 including Barbara (Bobbi) Arnold of Hollywood. Barbara “Bobbi” Arnold is known in the community for her volunteer efforts with Meals on Wheels (MOW). The long-serving MOW volunteer discovered along with other volunteers that many seniors were feeding their beloved four-legged companions before feeding themselves. In order to prevent this,

home-bound and disabled senior pet owners needed assistance with pet provisions. So, in 1999, The Meals for Companion Pets (MFCP) Program was created. Two years later, the vivacious now 78-year-old, took matters into her own hands and started a pet food drive in her backyard. She also went on to recruit, promote, and share the program with others so that more individuals could help deliver the

donated pet food to clients struggling to care for their pets. The demand for the program grew steadily and today, there is a team of 80 volunteers, sorting and delivering pet food each month to more than 114 pets in 75 homes across the MOW service area of Broward County. “Bobbi Arnold is a super star here and I am so pleased she is being recognized. She is amazing. We have worked together on the VCA Hollywood Pet Food

Drive now for seven years and brought in thousands and thousands of pounds of food. As importantly, we have connected the community in this effort and Meals on Wheels of South Florida’s Companion Pet Program has really grown,” exclaimed Linda Ream, VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital Communications Coordinator. “Bobbi is involved in all of our community events now and her role as our Client Care Coordinator has had one of the biggest single impacts on our client care services then any of our other efforts to date. She is just pretty awesome and a real partner for us in pet and community care.” The names of the special seniors will be inscribed on a commemorative plaque, which hangs in the lobby of the Broward County Government Center. The event will commence at 9 a.m. at the Renaissance Hotel in Plantation. For purchasing reserved seats and sponsor opportunities at the event, please call Cheryl Morrow, Executive Secretary, at (954) 745-9567, extension 10206. For information, placing an ad in the Memory Album, contact Denise Jones, Community Coordinator at 954-745-9567, extension 10216 or jonesd@adrcbroward.org.

The eleventh grade Scheck Hillel Community School student was inspired by her great-grandfather’s testimonial words to create her winning piece titled Resilience in her Advanced Placement (AP) Studio Art 3-D Design class. “My great-grandfather carried his younger brother through their escape from the march of death. Chased by bullets and bitter cold, they returned to their abandoned home, only to realize that they were the only two remaining from their family. The sibling who hung on my great-grandfather’s shoulders went on to develop Israel’s drip irrigation system and turn arid deserts into fertile land. This artwork captures a bond between two brothers, the thriving state of Israel, and the Jewish nation which has and will always be tied together with a thread of resilience,” explained Weitzman. As students make personal choices for their creative outlets, they can deepen and continually improve their practice. “From my great-grandfather’s testimonial I learned about the resilience of the Jewish people and the fact that we derive strength from one of the most tragic episodes of humanity. As a nation, we are connected by the obligation of lifting our Jewish identity and honoring the legacy of all six million Jewish lives taken, including 54 members of my family who perished and today are only present in my great-grandfather’s fading memories,” added the talented teen. The contest was hosted by Nova Southeastern University and sponsored by the Holocaust Learning and Education Fund, Inc. Edith Shlesinger, Danit’s AP Art teacher, was also recognized for mentoring and supporting her student’s work. “Danit is an amazing student and creative artist, I am so proud of her,” exclaimed Edith Shlesinger, Scheck Hillel AP Art teacher and Danit’s mentor. Contest winners were awarded cash prizes and are invited with their families to a weekend of activities, including a private tour of the Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection Resource Center.

Held on the white sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, Tortuga Music Festival is an annual 3-day, multi-stage music festival featuring some of the biggest names in country, rock and roots music. Fans descended on the beach from all over the country to listen to music, show off the latest in swimwear and enjoy perhaps, more than one cocktail. The weather cooperated this year, providing South Florida sunlight each day. Over 40 music acts played their hearts out during the event.

Following the festival and with Spring Break season coming to an end, South Floridians will likely have an easier time finding a spot in the sand for a nice weekend in the rays. The event, which was held on April 12th-14th, was headlined by country music heavyweights Kenny Chesney, Thomas Rhett and Jason Aldean. The Tortuga Music Festival has become the unofficial ending of Spring Break Season for the coastal communities. Many young people and country music fans from the area headed to the beach to enjoy the tunes. With just four arrests during the 3-night festival, the crowds were quite well-behaved, according to

or the past seven years, Scheck Hillel has hosted “District 20’s Thursday Solo & Ensemble” to create an opportunity for student-musicians to participate in the adjudication and uphold their observance of Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath). Moms, Give Yourself A Gift This Mother’s Day BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. orning sickness. weight gain. skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, causing stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result—smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help. A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing, and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include: • Breast augmentation • Breast lift • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) • Butt lift • Liposuction For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover. Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection.

Alleviating Neck Pain BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. any individuals suffer from chronic and acute conditions such as headaches, neck/back pain, fibromyalgia, facial pain, and sciatica to just name a few. Unfortunately, for quite some time there has been a lack of understanding in regard to chronic pain which has led to poor treatments and even worse outcomes. Neck pain is an extremely common area in which many experience discomforts. There are three general types of neck pain; ▸▸ Acute – Pain which lasts less than 4 weeks. ▸▸ Subacute – Pain which lasts 4-12 weeks. ▸▸ Chronic – Pain which lasts 3 or more months. Most who suffer from acute neck pain don’t even know what caused the issue, and oftentimes don’t even seek treatment. However, when the neck pain becomes subacute or chronic, then it’s likely that some form of medical guidance and/ or treatment is required. Depending on the cause and conditions, there may be specific ways for effective treatments. These recommended tips can help prevent neck pain, and may also help alleviate any symptoms occurring:

M

Stay Hydrated

The discs between the vertebrae in the cervical spine (neck) are comprised of approximately 80 percent water at birth. However, as one ages the ratio of water decreases, which can cause the discs to lose height, the spine to come out of alignment, and the pressure on the spine to increase. Staying hydrated throughout the day can help prevent further degeneration of the cervical discs, therefore eliminating neck pain. ▸▸ Set a daily water goal. Women typically need 2.2 liters, while men need 3 liters. ▸▸ Keep a reusable water bottle nearby at all times. ▸▸ Create new daily habits such as drinking a full glass of water when waking up each day.

Limit Hand-Held Phone Use

A common habit many don’t even think about but do all day long is cradle a phone in their neck while talking. This results in extra strain on the cervical spine. Also, many add additional stress on the neck by staring down at their phones for an extended period of time. This habit can, in fact, place up to 60 pounds of pressure on both the neck muscles and ligaments. ▸▸ Use a Bluetooth or hands-free headset. ▸▸ Hold the phone near eye level when texting or reading. ▸▸ Limit phone use when possible.

Apply Heat Therapy

Good old-fashioned advice is to not overlook the benefits of heat therapy. Applying a heating pad or a hot water bottle for 20 minutes may produce the following benefits: ▸▸ An increase in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles encourages healing in the neck. ▸▸ The stimulation of sensory receptors in the skin hinders the transmission of pain signals to the brain. ▸▸ The stretching of soft tissues around the spine will decrease stiffness in the neck. It is suggested to try these tips even with severe neck pain, as they can provide even a little bit of relief from chronic symptoms. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. “ZOEY & MILO”

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Gas Pump Safety Tips BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM

F

of the

Month

These are my 2 Tabby’s. I got them both as babies last year after my Calico I had for 16 years passed away. Zoey (15 months old) is my princess on the right and Milo (1 year) is my lil boy,as I sometimes call him. Zoey’s favorite person is my daughter Tatiana, who she sleeps with every night! I am Milo’s favorite person, as he truly seems to think he is a baby and loves snuggling under my neck whenever he can! Their favorite toys seem to by anything they find to toss around the house.(ie..cat toys, my daughters toys) They love running all around! There isn’t anything I can say they dislike! Their favorite thing to do is eat! They love their treats! They were last seen sleeping in the windowsill!

or years, a new crime trend has been affecting communities, both locally and nationally - the crime of vehicle theft at gasoline stations. The thefts normally take place when the victim is most distracted (i.e. when he or she is pumping gas or going into the station to make a purchase). Purses and other valuables are often left visible and easily accessible from the passenger side of a vehicle while doors often unlocked. A suspect vehicle will drive up next to the victim’s vehicle, quickly open the unlocked door, grab easily accessible items and drive off. It happens in a matter of seconds. These are crimes of opportunity that can be prevented when being prudent and taking the appropriate precautions: ▸▸ Pick gasoline stations that are well lit and have video surveillance cameras at the pump. ▸▸ Always remove your keys and lock the vehicle while you are pumping gas. ▸▸ Keep valuables out of plain sight and remember to lock your vehicle even if you are going inside the station for a moment. ▸▸ Pick your pump with care, if possible, wait for the pump nearest to the attendant or station. ▸▸ Pay attention to your surroundings. ▸▸ Do not be distracted by your cell phone.

Another trending crime affecting unsuspecting victims is credit card skimmers. Skimmers are small devices criminals use to steal consumer credit and debit card information which is then used to commit fraud and identity theft. You can help protect yourself from becoming a victim by following simple steps: ▸▸ Check for a security seal on the edge of the gas pump cabinet panel, which is where you insert your credit card, and use the keypad to complete your transaction. If this seal is broken or tampered with, there’s a high probability a criminal has inserted a skimmer. ▸▸ Even if you do not see signs of trouble at the pump, when you use your debit card at the pump, run it as a credit card instead of entering a PIN. “That way, the PIN is safe, and the money isn’t deducted immediately from your account. ▸▸ Use a pump that is in clear view of the attendant or go inside to pay the oldfashioned way. ▸▸ Wiggle the card reader before inserting your payment method. A card reader that has been tampered with will probably be loose or feel unstable. ▸▸ In addition, if you notice any of signs of tampering, use a different pump and alert the gas station attendant.
