A Little Turbulence on Your Flight?

W

e love to travel. In fact, we fly to exotic and not-so-exotic locations, both close to home and around the world, on a fairly regular basis. Despite our love of travel, Christy is not a fan of bumpy flights. For her, a little bit of turbulence will create enough anxiety to set flight attendants off for a glass or two of wine! This makes us all the more thankful for the brave men and women who routinely fly into the world’s most turbulent skies. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), along with the U.S. Air Force, maintain a fleet of aircraft known as the “hurricane hunters.” These modified warplanes routinely fly in the opposite direction of rational human beings to collect data as hurricanes approach populated areas. A typical mission keeps the aircrew off the ground for 11 hours. That is about the time it would take to fly from Miami to Moscow! Imagine the roller coaster ride these dedicated public servants are on flying through a hurricane. The aircraft used for these incredibly important missions are modified C-130 cargo planes and P-3 Orion submarine hunters. Both were chosen because of incredibly reliable service records and the fact that they are slow. Fast, high-altitude jets are not very useful for collecting atmospheric condition data; however, slow propellerdriven planes are perfect. Unless, you have motion sickness. The planes use a number of radars, instruments and “drop” devices to collect a myriad of data. These data are uploaded, in near real-time, to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Forecasts and hurricane track projections using Hurricane Hunter data are as much as 30% more accurate than just satellite and radar projections. So, the next time your flight is a little bit bumpy and the captain turns on the fasten seatbelt sign, be thankful for that Hurricane Hunter flight crew of six, flying 10,000 feet above a stormy sea in winds that would knock over an apartment building! We know we are. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Why is there chlorine in our tap water? People had long battled a variety of ailments that were spread through water, including diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. When scientists recognized that adding chlorine in small amounts to drinking water could kill bacteria and microbes in the public water system and help slow or even stop the spread of these water-borne diseases, the idea of adding chlorine to water supplies became popular quickly. Chlorine / Chloramine has long been mixed with our water supply to neutralize bacteria and contaminants (much like in a swimming pool). Having been a guest at the Hollywood Water treatment facility, I can say first hand that our city’s filtration and purification process is done to the highest degree, so why all the chlorine? The chlorine is needed once the clean water leaves the facility, this ensures that it remains safe when traveling through long distances of piping as well as when the water becomes stagnant in the pipe at times. (due to limited use in certain areas). Chlorine is used to keep our water clean by disinfecting it and killing germs. And it does a marvelous job at eliminating most pathogens from the water we drink. Hollywood will be doing a line purging, where they flush the lines out with chlorine. This will be starting May 21, 2019 and go on until June 21, 2019. Cloudiness and other unusual smells or colors are to be expected during this

time. If you don’t have a filtration system make sure you let the faucet run for a few minutes, before you fill that pot or take a shower. This will help lower the excess chlorine that will be remaining in the lines due to the purging. For more information on state of the art affordable whole house filtration systems and water testing, please contact Watermen Plumbing , mention you found us in Our City Media and receive a free complimentary in home water test and ensure your safety! According to a report from the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, the cancer risk for people who drink chlorinated water is up to 93% higher than for those whose water does not contain chlorine. It made it easier for cities and towns to purify drinking water and to keep their residents safe. – Aug 10, 2017, The EPA required treated tap water to have a detectable level of chlorine to help prevent contamination. The allowable chlorine levels in drinking water (up to 4 parts per million) pose “no known or expected health risk [including] an adequate margin of safety.” – Mar 30, 2010

Volunteers Rehabilitate Sand Dune on Hollywood Beach BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

n honor of Earth Day, the City of Hollywood the ground to properly plant sea oats and other dune partnered with the Youth Environmental Alliance plants, and they recruit and manage volunteers at (YEA) to restore and renovate the degraded these planting events,” exclaimed City of Hollywood dune at Eucalyptus Terrace on Hollywood Beach. Environmental Sustainability Coordinator and The City was awarded a $5,000 grant from Broward Project Manager, Elaine Franklin. County’s Coastal Dune Restoration Grant Program. The generous program assists coastal property owners to create, restore, or enhance sand dunes alongside their residences. YEA led seventy volunteers as part of the service project. In April, the dedicated environmental enthusiasts from Wells Fargo and the Tropical Audubon Society came out for a “planting day” as part of the City’s coastal resilience plan and to celebrate Earth Day. “There are many volunteer opportunities related to Earth Day. The City of Hollywood appreciates that Wells Fargo chose the Eucalyptus Terrace dune renovation project for their ‘Day of Service’. The City values its partnership with YEA as they have been a long-standing collaborator on these projects. They provide expertise on

As part of the overall restoration project, the City hired crews to remove non-native plants and other invasive woody species prior to the planting day. The ambitious volunteers then filled in the open spaces by planting close to 5,000 sea oats, grasses, and other low-growing native species. For many years, dune restoration projects such as this have been taking place along Hollywood Beach. Contractors and volunteers have removed exotic species, replanted native vegetation and have conducted select pruning in an effort to restore the dunes to full health. Dunes help to reduce sand loss, mitigate storm surges, protect coastal properties, and provide habitat for sea turtles and other wildlife. Thus, they are vital to a healthy urban beach ecosystem and to protecting adjacent real estate. “Signage has also been added to the beach to help educate the public on the importance of coastal dunes. In addition to general maintenance, future restoration projects are planned at multiple dunes along Hollywood Beach as part of the City’s overall Dune Master Plan Process,” added Franklin.

The world famous concept is finally here in Miami. Call or visit us online to reserve your table.

Going for Gold – South Florida Native Follows His Dream BY BEVERLY PERKINS

J

ared Firestone grew up in the warm South Florida sunshine where he attended Scheck Hillel Community School and Pine Crest School. It was in 10th grade at the prestigious private school when he began participating in Track & Field. But it wasn’t until his senior year when he won a district 2-15A championship in the 100 meters. Just as he was starting to come into his own as a sprinter, he saw Steven Spielberg’s “Munich,” the story of the Munich Massacre at the 1972 Olympic Games, when eleven Israeli athletes were murdered. The film inspired him to want to compete in the Olympic Games for Israel. But his dream was paused because he went on to attend Tulane University where he continued competing in Track & Field for all four years. Following graduation, he went on to

study law at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City. But once again, the ambitious student’s dreams were put on hold because he suffered a Transischemic Attack, a mini-stroke, during his first year of law school. It happened around the same time as the 2014 Winter Olympics. “After being an athlete my entire life, I never expected to face an obstacle like a mini-stroke. At the time, I was imagining a life without sports,” said Firestone. While recovering, Firestone saw the winter sport skeleton (where a competitor rides head-first and face down on a flat sled which runs on an ice track) and decided life was too short to bury his face in Torts and Constitutional Law books - instead it should be buried in ice as he slides

under 5-G’s of pressure at 80 miles per hour! He went on the USA Bobsled & Skeleton website and soon after found himself at a sliding school in Lake Placid, NY. Fortunately, Firestone recovered, graduated from law school, went on to take both the Florida and New York Bars, and then headed to Lake Placid to join the Team USA Athlete Developmental program full-time. After three seasons in the USA program, he applied for Israeli citizenship and formally joined the Israel Bobsled & Skeleton Federation. The twenty-nine-year-old athlete will begin competing for Israel internationally beginning this October and is spending the offseason at home in Hollywood, training and working in real estate sales to fund his season while looking for help to fund his Olympic dreams “Growing up, I knew that I had to do certain things…go to college, go to law school, get a job, make money, and eventually support a family. Kindness Matters at McNicol Middle School BY BEVERLY PERKINS

M

cNicol Middle School was named one of 10 national finalists in the “Middle School Kindness Challenge”. The Hollywood Broward County Public School (BCPS) was chosen as a finalist amongst 600 schools across the country that participated. The prestigious award also came with $1,000 to support activities to continue promoting kindness at the school. “We are honored to be named a national finalist in the Middle School Kindness Challenge,” said McNicol Middle School Principal Melissa Gurreonero. “We believe, we have the responsibility to not only educate our students with regards to academics but to also support our students social and emotional needs to help them grow into positive members of our community. By fostering and teaching students about kindness, and its lasting impact on others, we are creating well-rounded citizens.” Now more than ever are teachers, administrators, and parents are seeing the need to teach the youth of today the most important life lesson: basic kindness. Unfortunately, data from the U.S. Department of Education has alarming facts that bullying and harassment followed by excessive absences are happening inside and outside of our country’s middle

schools. Sadly, these findings have also shown that suicide by children ages 10-14 has more than doubled due to these serious problems. Therefore, the “Middle School Kindness Challenge” was created by a unique collaboration of leading education organizations, distinguished teachers, and acclaimed researchers. The program provides access to research-based tools and resources, free of charge, to those who want to incorporate kindness into the school day making kindness a natural and familiar skill while improving school climate and student learning. By teaching children, tweens, and teens how to practice kindness, how to be more empathetic, how to manage their emotions and actions, they become better equipped to navigate the complex world at school, at home, and online. The “Challenge” includes a multitude of expert-crafted activities for teachers and school staff to choose from. Each activity falls

into four categories: Developing Positive Mindsets, Strengthening Peer Relationships, Fostering Empathy, and Promoting Cyber-Kindness. As part of McNicol Middle’s “Kindness Challenge”, students collected personal care items such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner for Broward County Outreach Center, which provides resources and support to the homeless and those in need. In addition, students participated in weekly classroom activities, such as “One Word”, in which students wrote down a positive word about another student – and then shared the note with the student. “Students enjoyed reading positive words about themselves and were happy to see their peers say positive things about them,” said Melissa Goulet, McNicol Middle’s Kindness Captain.

raduating from college is one of life’s significant milestones. On May 5th, forty-one adults were able to celebrate their achievements with their families, the president, faculty, administrators, and staff from Union Institute & University. “We couldn’t be more proud of our graduates. Earning a degree is life changing, and we know that Union graduates are world changers,” said Dr. Jay Keehn, executive director at Union’s Florida Academic Center in Hollywood. “What makes Union unique is we know each student. We understand the struggle of working full-time, raising a family, and completing a college degree. Now they will go out and impact not only their lives and their families, but also make a difference in their communities.” Dr. Karen Schuster Webb, president of Union Institute & University, welcomed the graduates and elevated them with these words. “To all our students: We trust that your Union education has – in the words of our mission – engaged, enlightened, and empowered you to become change agents and leaders. We look to each of you – in your own ways – to continue to make a difference in your own communities and to carry the Union legacy forward.” Dr. Webb acknowledged the sacrifice of the students, and also the families – the mothers, fathers, grandparents, sons, and daughters who supported each student along the journey. She congratulated the students on earning their degrees by borrowing time from family and friends, by balancing their time and

energy between jobs and community commitments, and through sheer discipline and hard work. Black Violin Duo at Hollywood Elementary Schools Were #Sharp BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

few years ago, three Broward County Public Schools (Lake Forest, Walker and Bethune Elementary) were selected to participate in Turnaround Arts. The national program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts strengthens and transforms schools through the strategic use of the arts while keeping the focus on student achievement and engagement. Furthermore, students experience a high-quality integrated arts education in all areas of the curriculum. The Hollywood schools are the first in Florida to have the privilege of receiving an acclaimed artist adopt their school. Past artists have included Cameron Diaz, Carla Dirlikov, and John Lloyd Young. These dedicated national artists support the school for the length of the project. This year Walker and Bethune had the honor to work with Black Violin. The hip hop string instrumentalists visited with several classrooms at the two schools, performed during assemblies, participated in question and answer sessions, and shared personal and motivational stories. The Black Violin members, Wil B and Kev Marcus, are very familiar with the Broward County District

since they both attended and learned their craft through the strings programs offered in Broward County Public Schools. Both are graduates of Dillard High School Center for the Arts. The talented duo enjoys giving back to the community especially the one they grew up in. They have committed to visiting and performing at Turnaround Arts Schools and encourage the young students to reach for the stars. During their recent visit to Bethune and Walker

Elementary Schools, approximately 1,100 students attended the assembly and interacted with Black Violin. The inspirational instrumentalists performed in a different and unique manner for (and with) the students at each school. The artists shared their personal stories and inspired students to dream big. Students were encouraged to persevere, study, think differently, and present their hobbies, gifts, and passions in a different way. A strings student said, “ Someday, I can travel around the world and play my violin just like Black Violin.” “Black Violin encourages our students to try their very best! They motivate, encourage and had such a powerful presence on our campus,” exclaimed Anita McBeth, Bethune Elementary teacher. Additionally, Turnaround Arts provides resources such as curriculums developed my master teaching artists, art supplies, licensing rights, and kits for school musicals, and the opportunity to perform in a performing arts venue.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Hooray for Hollywood! BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY ots of work is happening at City Hall these days… From policing and fire-rescue to neighborhood improvement, smart-growth planning, and parks and recreation, city staff is being charged with an evergrowing list of projects to execute. As you may already know, on March 12th our city held a special election. On the ballot were three general obligation bond proposals. The result? Voters approved all three GOB questions, and everyone should be excited for all the renewal that’s ahead: improved city parks, sports fields, golf courses and arts education facilities, a new police headquarters building and fire/rescue equipment to facilitate our public safety, neighborhood traffic calming measures, seawalls to protect against sea level rise, landscaping, sound walls, completing the undergrounding of utilities on the hurricane-vulnerable barrier island and the list goes on. This $165M public investment that we are about to make in our city, together with all the continuing private investment that homeowners and commercial property owners are making, will be another big part of ushering in an era of renewal for our city, just ahead of our city’s centennial in 2025. The neighborhood improvement programs that we created through the recent interlocal agreement with Broward County and the Hollywood Beach CRA will begin this summer. Millions of beach property tax dollars that were previously restricted to be reinvested on the beach will now be available to be to rehabilitate and improve many of Hollywood’s older neighborhoods – beginning this year and on through the next 18 years. Housing rehab, first-time homebuyers’ programs, resident work-skills programs, neighborhood infrastructure improvements, there’s lots included. Speak with our Community Development department to learn if you can qualify for any of the “ILA” grants, loans and programs. Other things accomplished or in the works: Master planning for Hollywood Parks and Rec and for the Hollywood Marina. Collective bargaining agreements with our public safety employees. Cost savings realized with the city’s health insurance expenses. Transition to new enterprise software that will make the city’s finance, HR and other departments run more efficiently. Homeless task force initiatives. Completing the LED streetlights project. Setting a course for Septic-to-Sewer conversion over the next 20 years. Funding for sidewalk repair and roadway improvements. Ongoing discussion with Broward County Schools to make Hollywood public schools the best they can be. Organizational changes by the City Manager, including the addition of a Performance and Accountability Officer, plus much more. Lastly, on the fun side of life, if you are among the many people who are taking on the sport of stand-up paddle boarding, we have good news; you now have a much more open beach do paddle in. Hollywood Fire-Rescue & Beach Safety did a lot of research on how best to update our city’s old surfing regulations and began a 6-month trial period for expanded paddle sports access along Hollywood Beach. For all the details, see the city website or speak with one of our lifeguards. I hope everyone’s family is doing well, and that you have a great summer. Let’s go Hollywood, Josh Levy, Mayor

Colbert Museum Magnet Named 2019 National Magnet School of Distinction BY BEVERLY PERKINS

C

olbert Museum Magnet School has recently attracted some national attention. In early April, the Hollywood elementary school was recognized at the Magnet Schools of America’s 37th National Conference hosted by Baltimore County Public Schools in Baltimore, Maryland.

During this time, Colbert Principal Dorsett McLeod and Magnet Coordinator Chentel Neat accepted the “National Magnet School of Distinction Merit Award” on behalf of their school at the anticipated recognition ceremony. “This recognition is a direct result of the outstanding work that our teachers and students are doing within the STEM Museum Magnet theme. We

are consistent in our efforts to provide all students with a wealth of learning experiences that mirror the real world and promote academic excellence, exclaimed Neat. “It is truly an honor for the entire Colbert community!” Colbert Museum Magnet is a Sprouting STEM Museum Magnet School. The staff and faculty pride themselves on being a community that prepares their learners to investigate, understand, and transform their world. This vision encompasses the theme of the program as their “cougars” are provided with extensive opportunities to accomplish goals through a blend of instructional practices. These practices include the use of interdisciplinary science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) units, hands-on inquiry activities, research that addresses real-world questions, and the application of learning through student-curated museum exhibits. The integration of the museum model in STEM curriculum offers students the opportunity to explore, experiment, explain and exhibit their learning. that enables each student to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in a diverse and ever-changing society. In order to be recognized to receive the prestigious national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. The schools are then judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme. “We are ecstatic to be awarded the National Merit, Magnet School of Distinction award. It is truly an honor to be rewarded for our innovating works as a Sprouting STEM Museum Magnet School! This award further validates the passion that my staff and students possess for progressively transforming our world through innovation in academia,” added Principal McLeod.

ASK THE EXPERT

The Value of Fat in Cosmetic Surgery BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants, is not applicable because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than

T

plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its longterm effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. PAIN MANAGEMENT

Degenerative Disc Disease BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. he vertebral column (backbone) is made up of 33 vertebrae. These vertebrae are then grouped into divisions called the cervical (neck), thoracic (upper back), and lumbar (lower back). A fibrous disc (intervertebral disc) connects each pair of the vertebrae. Healthy spines have discs that cushion the vertebrae allowing for normal flexibility and movement of the spine. Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is the weakening of one or more of these intervertebral discs. Unfortunately, the condition develops as a natural part of the aging process. These discs between the bones of the spine are made up of cartilage, fibrous tissue, and water. With age, the discs weaken, flatten, bulge, or break down. Sometimes there may be a genetic component in some individuals who suffer from DDD, but the true cause can be a combination of things, but usually it’s simple “wear and tear” or the result of an injury. Degenerative Disc Disease in the lower back, or lumbar spine, occurs when a disc is compromised and causes pain. The disc itself does not have a blood supply, so if an injury occurs it is unable to repair itself the way other tissues in the body can. DDD is so common that an estimated 30% of individuals ages 30-50 years old have some degree of disc space degeneration. Many may not ever even experience pain or have it diagnosed. After a person reaches the age of 60, some level of disc degeneration is considered normal and nothing to be alarmed about. Symptoms Symptoms vary with each individual depending on the location and the type of disc degeneration. However, a primary symptom of the disease includes sharp and/ or chronic pain in the back and neck. Other signs are weakness or numbness. As a disc undergoes change, the body may react and develop bone spurs as well. These bony growths may take up space, therefore compressing the nerves, and causing weakness in the arms and/or legs. Tests If a patient presents any of the above symptoms, their doctor may order X-rays, an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), or a CT (Computed Tomography) scan. Treatment The severity of the condition will determine the best approach for treatment before considering surgery. Nonoperative measures may include: heat and/or ice therapy, activity modification, medications, physical therapy to strengthen the muscles, and epidural injections. These measures are often effective in providing pain relief. Surgery, such as a discectomy, may be required for those patients not responding to any of the nonoperative measures, whose disc changes have resulted in spinal cord compression, who have a structural abnormality, or those who have such severe chronic pain. The procedure removes the disc and any associated bone spurs which are compressing the spinal cord and/or surrounding nerves. The removal makes room for the spinal cord and nerves to move freely again, and the pressure is relieved.

“BANDIT”

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Seniors Helping Seniors to Fight Crime BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM eniors are being targeted for scams, subjected to high-pressure sales tactics, switch and bait schemes, and false advertising too frequently. With the help of police and sheriff departments throughout the State of Florida, thousands of seniors were enlisted to document telemarketing calls, door to door sales pitches, all junk mail received and any unsolicited sales pitches over a 30- day period. As a result, many retired persons wanted to help in the fight against scams on a volunteer basis, and the “Seniors vs. Crime” (SVC) was founded with offices initially in five (5) counties with staffed volunteers, many of them retired policemen, lawyers, and accountants, to name a few. Having standalone offices was expensive and, therefore, the Attorney General’s Office went to police and sheriff departments throughout the state asking if they would be willing to host SVC volunteers at their facility which would also make it easier to coordinate their work with law agencies. The partnership of the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) along with the Attorney General’s Office proved to be a win-win situation. It is a great program that we offer to not only the City of the North Miami Beach (City), but of Miami-Dade County as a whole. Over the years, the scope of the operation has been enlarged. The NMBPD SVC takes on cases brought to us from residents of other states or nations if a Florida company in Miami-Dade is the object of the complaint. Age of the persons who feel they have been a victim makes no difference. Not only scams are investigated, but failures of companies to back their warranties, contractors who do not complete work or do it in a shoddy fashion, complaints of overpricing and “cramming”. Currently, more than half of the cases that the NMBPD SVC investigated do not involve crimes, but instead civil disputes. The volunteers, commonly called “Senior Sleuths”, serve as mediators to bring the two (2) sides to an agreement rather than having to go to court. Anyone with a complaint can call or visit the volunteers. With the summer holiday getting in full swing, it is important to be hyperaware that cyber thieves are on the prowl for your personal, financial and location information. Holiday travel can expose data on mobile devices to risk from physical or data theft. The NMBPD SVC recommends the following security tips to reduce your digital security risks while traveling this summer: ▸▸ Before you leave, make sure that your device’s software is up-to-date. Consider removing older applications that you no longer use. ▸▸ Keep your WIFI and Bluetooth interfaces off when they are not in use. ▸▸ Avoid using public WIFI hotspots. Public WIFI hotspots usually have no encryption. As such, malicious actors within a certain physical distance from you can eavesdrop on your communications. ▸▸ Passwords protect your phone with a PIN or better yet a passphrase. Stay safe and enjoy summer!

Princess kitty, Bandit Alycia Dumbledoor or Bandit for short, is truly the very finest pet anyone could ever hope for. Bandit was found roaming the city alleyways and kindly relocated last April to the Humane Society by some gentle soul. A trip with Auntie Kathy to visit a long time friend who volunteers at the Broward Humane Society led Bandit to select Ella as her forever friend. Love at first sight! We know if you met her, she would steal your heart as well! Naturally, since Bandit selected Ella and the feeling of immediate love and attraction was mutual, we all know that her very favorite person will always be her Ella. Please consider adoption.

CHAMBER NEWS

2019 Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Annual Legislative Update Luncheon

T

he Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) and its Government Affairs Committee are pleased to invite you to the annual, nonpartisan “2019 Legislative Update Luncheon” on Thursday, June 20th, 2019 at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort 1111 N Ocean Dr, Hollywood, FL 33019. Registration begins at 11:30 am followed by a program from 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm. The Legislative Luncheon provides both residents and business people with the opportunity to hear directly from our delegation on some important legislative issues affecting our state and communities during the 2019 session. This session was particularly interesting as our new Governor Ron DeSantis was very hands-on and worked very well with both sides of the aisle. This session also wrapped up with a historic $91.1 billion budget and nearly 3,400 bills introduced this session and fewer than 200 survived! So, If you want to know more about Governor DeSantis proposed $91.3 billion budget, proposed solutions for our State’s environmental issues, healthcare, insurance, school choice, and school safety, transportation, and more, please join us on June 20th. We also look forward to hearing the debate on “Visit Florida” as it was saved at the very last minute by the

governor who wishes to assess the situation on his own before eliminating the funding of this agency near and dear to the hospitality industry. The GHCC is most fortunate to have elected officials who are always willing to come back and report to the business community. The luncheon event will be moderated by Miami Herald Senior Editor, Dave Wilson and invited panelists are: State Senator Gary Farmer and State Repres entatives Joseph Geller (D - 100th District), Rep. Evan Jenne (D - 99th District), Rep. Shevrin Jones (D - 101st District) and Rep Chip LaMarca (R- 93rd District). This will be our first time hearing State Representative Chip LaMarca in this capacity. It is everyone’s responsibility to educate ourselves about what our elected officials are facing and making decisions on in Tallahassee. “A Democracy without the responsibility towards education becomes a continual manipulation of power between the rulers and the ruled “. Joseph Cubby Participants will also be able to network with community leaders and the elected officials. For more information or to RSVP please visit our website www.hollywoodchamber.org or call (954) 923-4000. The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is located at 330 N. Federal Highway, Hollywood, 33020.
