Don’t Let Rain Dampen Summer Fun!
S
ummer in South Florida means heat, humidity and lots of rain. According to USClimateData.com, average rainfall in Broward County almost triples during the summer months. In fact, we average almost nine inches of rain each month. Lucky for us, there are plenty of things to do when Mother Nature does not cooperate. There are museums and art galleries for every interest, from paintings by talented local artists at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines to the dynamic and bright CultureScapes at Young At Art Museum in Davie. Children universally love Fort Lauderdale’s hands-on Museum of Discovery and Science, while adults may prefer the Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection, which offers “the largest eclectic transportation collection” in the world, or the Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum, which provides a look back in automotive time. Rainy days are the perfect time to explore new interests. Try a yoga or spin class, jump around at an indoor trampoline park, or learn how to blow glass at Hollywood Hot Glass on Young Circle. The possibilities are endless. So, next time the weather puts a damper on your outdoor plans, explore all the fun and interesting indoor options available to us. Sincerely,

The City of Aventura Named “Tree City USA” for 20th Year COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
here’s nothing shady about the City of Aventura being named “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the 20th consecutive year. Since 1976, more than 3,400 communities across the country have committed themselves to becoming a Tree City USA. The nationwide program allows the opportunity to celebrate the importance of an urban tree canopy, to improve care of the vital city trees and provides the framework necessary to do so. In order to achieve Tree City USA status, four core standards must be met: ▸▸ A Tree Board or Department- A person must be legally responsible for the care of all trees on city-or town-owned property. Involving local residents and business owners creates awareness of what trees can do for the community while also providing and encouraging better tree care. ▸▸ A Tree Care Ordinance – A basic tree care ordinance forms the foundation of a city’s tree care program. It enables policies to be set in place with the force of law to back it up if not followed. It also provides clear instructions for planting, maintaining and removing trees from streets, parks and other public spaces. ▸▸ A Community Forestry Program with an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita – The valuable public assets require the necessary investment to stay healthy and sustainable. The city trees in turn provide clean air, clean water, shade and beauty. ▸▸ An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation- An annual Arbor Day ceremony completes the requirements to become a Tree City USA. Citizens are able to gather with community officials and celebrate the work accomplished
and become better educated about the program. In addition, the event exposes the younger generation to environmental quality and a green world. The City of Aventura celebrated their renewed status at the annual Arbor Day & Earth Day Ceremony. The festivities took place at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center where the kindergarten students from Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) performed dance and music and showcased art dedicated to the day. In addition, the City also recognized local businesses and residential communities with the 2017 Aventura GO Green Recognition Award. Those honored developed and implemented innovative programs to reduce energy consumption while encouraging sustainability. City officials also came out to show their Go Green spirit, as they planted trees. The City of Aventura’s Community Services Department conducts the annual event and is dedicated to providing Aventura residents with quality service, parks, facilities, events, programs, camps and activities. For more information, contact the Community Services Department at 305-466-8930.
Developer Builds First Mikvah in Sunny Isles Beach Condo BY BEVERLY PERKINS
H
istory is being made in Sunny Isles Beach as the Verzasca Group is building the first Mikvah in the city, and the first as part of a condominium project in South Florida. The indoor bath is used by Orthodox Jewish men and women for ritual immersion. The highly visual amenity will be part of Aurora, Sunny Isles Beach’s new boutique luxury condominium located on the west side of Collins Avenue. Upon Aurora’s completion, the Mikvah will be donated to the Chabad Lubavitch of Sunny Isles Beach. Before the developer, Verzasca Group came along, members of the Orthodox Jewish community in Sunny Isles Beach need to go to neighboring cities to use a Mikvah.

JULY 2017 | OUR CITY AVENTURA
Verzasca Group has set out to transform the luxury residential market in Sunny Isles Beach, and bring the community closer together. The Mikvah is poised to be a vital part of the Jewish community in and around Sunny Isles Beach. Aurora is part of an intimate collection of coutique residences, along with Le Jardin Residences and Pearl House in Bay Harbor Islands. The Mikvah at Aurora is the product of Verzasca’s substantial community outreach as the developer planned the project. Verzasca’s leadership met with Rabbi Yisrael Baron of Chabad Lubavitch of Sunny Isles Beach, and during those conversations learned that the community still did not have a Mikvah for Orthodox Jewish men and women to use for ritual immersion. Aurora’s Mikvah will provide a safe and walkable option for Sunny Isles Beach residents and visitors especially for Shabbat and holidays when driving is prohibited. To ensure utmost privacy, the Mikvah will be located on the west side of Aurora – away from the building lobby and commercial space. It will also have a separate entrance and six preparation rooms with one Mikvah for women and a separate Mikvah for men. “It has been a pleasure getting to know Rabbi Baron and working with him to fill this important void in the Sunny Isles community,” said Verzasca Managing Director Tim Lobanov. “This special ame-
nity will certainly enhance our project in many ways.” Aurora is located at 17550 Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach, one of the world’s most soughtafter destinations. The boutique building will have 61 residences with two and three-bedrooms ranging from 1,385 to more than 2,150 square feet. Prices start in the $900,000s, making it the most attainable luxury project on Sunny Isles Beach. Renowned architect Luis Revuelta of Revuelta Architecture is the building’s designer. Internationally acclaimed Antrobus + Ramirez is the project’s interior designer, with Nielsen Landscape Architects overseeing the landscape design. A
ventura resident and lifestyle photographer, Howie Sonnenschein, donates his time and talents to the Holocaust Documentation & Education Center (HDEC), the organization behind the first-ever South Florida Holocaust Museum. Sonnenschein’s passion to volunteer specifically for the Center comes from his background. Both his parents are Holocaust survivors which makes him a second generation survivor. Sadly, Sonnenschein’s father just passed last year, but he was born in the town of Auschwitz (Oswiecim) before it became a concentration camp. He then was imprisoned in multiple camps including Blechhammer, Gross Rosen, Langenbielau - Sportschule, Kattowitz and Dyhernfurth. His mother was born in Warsaw and lived in the Warsaw ghetto as a child during the war. She spent her time living with various Polish families and had to maintain a false identity. “When I was a kid, I was fascinated by my father’s concentration camp tattoo, and that started the beginning of many questions and stories about my parents’ experiences as children during the Holocaust,” said Sonnenschein. “Almost all of both of their families were killed, in some ways known and in some ways unknown. Both of my parents had very dramatic stories of suffering and survival. I also was very fascinated by many of their friends who were also Holocaust Survivors.” Sonnenschein has always loved taking photos. Starting right out of high school, he shot sports, wedding, and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. After college he continued his career by photographing fashion and swimwear, and also became a television producer. Ultimately, he created a popular website, bikini.com, with his sister, but his heart was with Holocaust Survivors. He later sold his company, and decided to finally work on the project he always dreamed of doing his entire life. He wanted to honor Holocaust Survivors by photographing dramatic portraits of them.
JULY 2017 | OUR CITY AVENTURA
“A picture tells a story and a picture lasts forever,” explains Sonnenschein. “I know that these amazing survivors want to reach as many people as possible so that their lessons are learned and genocide never happens again to anyone.” The HDEC educates thousands of students, and alerts them to the dangers of racism, hatred, and bigotry. Local Holocaust survivors are invited to speak with high school students during Student Awareness Days about their experiences in the Holocaust. “It’s been an honor meeting and really getting to know all the survivors and watching their passion interacting with the students,” says Sonnenschein. “Seeing and photographing the emotional reactions from the students when they are hearing the stories from the survivors is extremely gratifying. It’s been one of the best experiences of my life working with the HDEC, and I especially like working with HDEC President Rositta Kenigsberg. She gives me great inspiration.”

red Stolle, Tennis Legend and longtime Aventura resident, was honored by the City of Aventura and Williams Island Club residents in late spring for his many years of dedication to his community.
Aventura Mayor Enid Weisman presented the international tennis star with the City’s proclamation making April 22, 2017 Fred Stolle Day at the First Annual Fred Stolle Cup at Williams Island benefitting First Serve Miami. First Serve Miami has been operating in South Florida since 1988 with a mission to develop, organize, and conduct life skills and academic development programs through tennis to youth from economically and socially challenged Miami-Dade communities. Tennis enthusiasts and Williams Island members were
served a fun-filled day on and off the courts with a game of tennis, a silent auction, and a BBQ lunch. The new event raised $30,100 for the organization. The funds raised will be directed to enhance the Adopt-A-Player Program which will help attract and support more under privileged children learning to play tennis in Miami-Dade County. Last year, the 18-time winning Grand Slam Champion, was honored by his native country of Australia with a 2016 stamp as part of the Legends of Singles Tennis. He also received an award at Roland-Garros commemorating his 50th anniversary of winning the French Open in 1965. Ranking seventh on the all-time list of champions, Stolle was a member of Australia’s Davis Cup teams from 1964 until 1967, where he won 13 of the 14 matches while playing on four victorious teams. He won the men’s singles title at the U.S. Open Championships in 1966, and is the male record-holder for the most post-war finals appearances at Wimbledon. Stolle’s dynamic doubles skills are reflected in his 16 doubles titles, including the U.S. Open men’s doubles, two U.S. Open mixed doubles, two Wimbledon men’s doubles, three Wimbledon mixed doubles, two French Open men’s doubles plus three men’s doubles and one mixed doubles at the Australian Open. A member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Australian Tennis Hall of Fame, the Australian Sports Hall of Fame, an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2005, and now an official dedicated day all add to Stolle’s smashing success. He currently is an international television commentator and analyst, and an active member, with his wife Pat, in the William’s Island tennis community.

Prestigious Accomplishment for Scheck Hillel Rising Seniors
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he end of the 2016-2017 academic school year had many accomplishments at Scheck Hillel Community School including four students being named qualifying honorees in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship® Competition (NMSC). Keith Bonwitt, Nathalie Fuhrman, Roy Glazer and Max Peicher are some of the country’s highest-scorers of the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) out of approximately 1.5 million students nationwide. Semifinalists in this competition represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, so it is quite an achievement for these Class of 2018 rising seniors to qualify. The test measures critical reading ability, mathematics problem-solving ability, and writing ability rather than existing knowledge. Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis to ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in the talent pool. Furthermore, they must be the highest scoring entrants in each state. According to the NMSC, all winners of Merit Scholarship® awards (Merit Scholar® designees) are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments—without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate: the Finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the
Finalist’s own essay. “We congratulate Keith, Nathalie, Roy and Max, and their families, for this most prestigious accomplishment,” said Dr. Ezra Levy, Scheck Hillel’s Head of School. “With stellar academic success like this, along with their service to community, core values and strong Jewish identity, these students beautifully exemplify our rising generation. We are incredibly proud of them and are grateful for the partnership shared by our dedicated families and faculty.” Scheck Hillel is honored to have graduated a significant roster of National Merit Scholarship winners, Finalists, Semifinalists and Commended Students, and to carry on this tradition into 2018. Most recently, Jordana Zackon, Class of 2017 Valedictorian, was named a 2017 National Merit Commended Student; she will attend Washington University in St. Louis in the fall. According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, approximately 16,000 students will be named Semifinalists next year, representing the top scorers in each state. Semifinalists will advance to win one of the 7,400 National Merit Scholarships. Scheck Hillel is one of the world’s largest Jewish community day schools and a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. For information, please visit eHillel.org.
1st Annual Robotics Festival at the Cutting Edge of Intl. STEM Education BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
n late spring, more than 100 students in grades three and four participated in the first Annual International Robotics Festival at Scheck Hillel Community School to showcase what they learned in the inaugural year of the Miami Jewish Day School Robotics Program. Hebrew Academy (RASG), Lehrman Community Day School, and Scheck Hillel Community School were the three Miami-Dade schools represented. The program was funded by a $40,000 grant from the Miami/Yerucham Partnership and facilitated by the Center for Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE), a subsidiary agency of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation in collaboration with the Yerucham Israel Science Center. The innovative approach to STEM education combines mathematics and science with Lego education enabling each participating third and fourth grade student to grasp concepts faster and work collaboratively to solve problems. Teachers from the three schools participated in a one-week training at CAJE by three mentors from the Yerucham Science Center Robotics Program. The mentors prepared Genie Bensimon, third grade general studies teacher at Hebrew Academy (RASG), Ilana Traub, Media and Technology Specialist at Lehrman Community Day School, and Nancy Penchev, I Lab Instructor at Scheck Hillel Community School, on how to implement a robotics curriculum in their respective schools. “It is particularly gratifying to see our students so excited and proud of their accomplishments as they master mathematical, programming and engineering

skills in our fourth grade robotics class,” said Ilana Traub. The Miami Jewish Day School Robotics Program has been extremely successful this year. It has given students the opportunity to focus on their strengths, develop new skills, and work together to achieve a set objective. “This robotics program has maximized our students’ ability to become experts in a variety of areas, guided by their own personal interests,” said Nancy Penchev. “From coding to building Lego robots to designing space missions, robotics has fostered and increased collaboration. Students bring their knowledge to help each other and achieve a greater goal. It has been a real joy to learn along with them.” “We are very excited about this program and look forward to bringing it to more schools and students next year,” said Valerie Mitrani, Director of Day School Strategy and Initiatives at CAJE. What is your background? Where did you complete your training? I earned my medical degree from Nova Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed my residency training at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where I received extensive training in Pain Management. I am Board Certified by the American Board of Pain Medicine, American Board of Anesthesiology, American Academy of Pain Management American Board of Interventional Pain Medicine and a Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice. I am also involved with drug research and procedure research studies. What differentiates you from others in your field? I offer a wide variety of procedures to help address spine issues, and I can bring considerable pain relief without the need for surgery. In fact, many of our patients experience faster recovery and immediate relief with little or no discomfort. I am fortunate to have patients recommend me to their family and friends. Furthermore, we offer appointments within 24 business hours.
What can patients expect on their first visit to your office? Patients will always be treated with respect and courtesy from the moment they call the office. We will do everything possible to make patients comfortable and provide as much information as needed after reviewing their medical history, and any previous imaging studies to plan the best approach for treatment. We encourage all patients to ask questions, as we want to educate them on the treatment and healing process. Everyone is treated as a person, not just a patient. What do you offer patients which is new in the field? We offer new treatments for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS). The Superion IDS is an FDA approved treatment for LSS. ACES Gives a Very Special Thank You to Aventura Police Officers
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he first grade team at Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) wanted to provide their students with a meaningful service project experience before the end of the 2016-2017 school year. The goal was to teach the children to become more aware of the needs of those around them, and to also teach them the importance of love, kindness, and gratitude. It was an easy decision that the recipients chosen were the Aventura Police Department, as they inspire the students each day. The first grade classes made “Officer Appreciation Kits” to distribute during a special ceremony hosted by members of the Student Government Association (SGA) in the school’s media center. To show their appreciation, the first graders gave each officer a bag of treats filled with goodies such as mints, for their “com-MINT-ment” to keeping everyone safe, lollipops to give the officers a “pop” of energy during their long days, and gum to help them “stick it through the tough times.” The first graders also put together a short video featuring photographs and video messages from several students through the school expressing their gratitude to the officers.
Inspired by Ellen Degeneres and her “Ellen Card” which encourages people to express gratitude and show kindness, the ACES Student Government Association created “ACES Thank You” cards. Each officer received a personalized ACES card inscribed with messages of gratitude. “My class and I really enjoyed the service project and ceremony,” said ACES first grade teacher Ms. Kieffer. “My students worked really hard in writing their letters to the officers. The day of the ceremony they were so excited when their bags were passed out to the officers and heard the officers do roll call. We thank the officers for all that they do!” On behalf of the Aventura Police Department, Sergeant Burns expressed his thanks to all those involved. Major Bentolila further expressed his admiration for the school’s efforts by saying, “On behalf of the chief and the entire agency, we really want to thank you for pointing out what we do and appreciating it. From what I understand, you could have picked any subject for your community service project and you chose us and that means a lot.” Also in attendance was Aventura City Manager Eric Soroka who praised the ACES students for showing their appreciation to the people who impact their daily lives by stating, “On behalf of the city I would just like to thank all the police officers for everything that you do every day, and I certainly want to thank the teacher and the students here for recognizing and appreciating them.”

Pérez Art Museum INSIDE/OUT Program Brings Art to Public Spaces BY BEVERLY PERKINS
“The City is always seeking opportunities to implement art in public places,” said City Manager Ana Garcia. “This opportunity to partner the Pérez Art Museum is a perfect fit and aligns directly with North Miami Beach’s goal to be the most beautiful community in South Florida.” The art reproductions have been placed in highly visible public locations throughout North Miami Beach, including the North Miami Beach Library, the banks of the scenic Snake Creek Canal Trail, Schenkenberger Park, City Hall, Snyder Tennis Center, Philippe DeRose International Flowering Tree Garden, and the iconic Ancient Spanish Monastery. The artwork on display from PAMM’s Inside|Out program features locally and internationally known artists with a strong base from the Caribbean and Latin America, from Fernando Botero to Edouard Duval-Carrié. The City is encouraging residents to share their Inside|Out experience on social media with #PAMMInsideOut and #IamNMB.
COMMUNITY NEWS
W
orld-class art is now easy and accessible as a walk in the park because of the new partnership between the City of North Miami Beach and the Pérez Art Museum (PAMM). The City of North Miami Beach celebrated the Pérez Art Museum’s Inside|Out program last month at the NMB Library. Attendees enjoyed live music, food, and prizes, as well as art-making activities and local mural painting. They were also able to take a walking tour of the newly installed artwork throughout the community. Generous funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Pérez Art Museum’s Inside|Out program has brought 15 highquality art reproductions from their permanent collection and placed them on display in public locations in throughout the City of North Miami Beach and other communities in Miami-Dade County. Miami is the fourth city to host Inside|Out, a program conceived by the Detroit Institute of Arts in 2010. It proved so successful in Detroit, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is providing $2 million over three years to expand Inside|Out to communities across the country. The program kicked off in Miami in 2016, and now in its second year the museum has offered the Inside|Out program again. For 2017 PAMM selected six communities out of 17 entries. Communities chosen for this year’s round of spring installations included Little Haiti, Surfside, Biscayne Park, Opa-Locka and Overtown. The summer installations in North Miami Beach, Little Haiti and Surfside will run from June through August.

T
he 2017 Hurricane Season runs through November 30th and this is predicted to be a more active season than usual. Colorado State University expects 14 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes this season, while the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects 11 to 17 named storms this season, more than the 30-year average for the Atlantic Basin. Although there is no strong correlation between the number of storms or hurricanes and U.S. landfalls in any given season, NOAA research has found that the United States averages one to two hurricane landfalls each season. That means we need to be prepared. Here are some helpful tips on what you need to know to be prepared before, during and after a storm.

windows with hurricane shutters or plywood. Bring in all outdoor furniture, garbage cans, decorations, and anything else that is not tied down and could become airborne. Charge your cell phone so you have a full battery in case you lose power. Withdraw cash from the bank. ATM’s will not work in a power outage. Gas up your car and buy extra gas if needed to fuel generators

In addition, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with water for bathing and flushing toilets. ▸ Turn your refrigerator or freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary. If you lose power, food will last longer. Keep a thermometer in the refrigerator to be able to check the food temperature when the power is restored. ▸ Turn on your TV or radio, or check your city/county website, every 30 minutes to get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.

Register for text or email alert systems for emergency notifications. Hurricane winds can cause trees and branches to fall, so trim or remove damaged trees and limbs to keep you and your property safe. Turn off electricity at the circuit breaker if you notice leaks in the roof or windows or if there is flooding. Use flashlights, not candles or kerosene lamps, as your light source. updates and instructions. Remain inside until authorities say it’s safe to go outside. Many disaster-related injuries occur in the aftermath of a hurricane. Watch out for debris and downed power lines. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle away. In addition, flood water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines and may hide dangerous debris or places where the ground is washed away. Photograph the damage to your property to assist in filing an insurance claim. Check-in with family and friends by texting or using social media to make sure everyone is safe.
WHAT’S IN YOUR KIT?

WHERE DO I GO?
If you live in a coastal or low-lying area, you may need to evacuate to an emergency shelter if a hurricane is approaching. Emergency shelters provide a refuge of last resort for those individuals who need to evacuate and are unable to make their own evacuation and sheltering arrangements, such as with friends, family, or in hotels outside of the evacuation zones. The American Red Cross operates the following shelters at area schools:

The warning can remain in effect when dangerously high water or a combination of dangerously high water and waves continue, even though winds may be less than hurricane force. Hurricane Watch – An announcement that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are possible within the specified area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the hurricane watch is issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds. Major Hurricane – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 111 mph or higher, corresponding to a Category 3, 4 or 5 on the SaffirSimpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale – A 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane’s sustained wind speed. Hurricanes reaching Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage. Storm Surge – An abnormal rise in sea level accompanying a hurricane or other intense storm. Storm surge is often one of the most dangerous elements of a hurricane because the dome of water can be 20 feet high at the peak and stretch 50-100 miles wide.

terminology as defined by the National Hurricane Center: Eye – The roughly circular area of comparatively light winds that encompasses the center of a severe tropical cyclone. The eye is either completely or partially surrounded by the eyewall cloud. Hurricane – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher. Hurricane Warning – An announcement that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected somewhere within the specified area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds.
Tropical Cyclone – A rotating, organized system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has a closed low-level circulation. Tropical cyclones rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. Those lists are now maintained and updated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). There are six lists that are used in rotation and recycled every six years, meaning this year’s list will be used again in 2023. The only time there is a change in a list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. If a name is retired, WMO selects a replacement. If more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur during one season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet.
2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Names: Arlene Bret Cindy Don Emily Franklin Gert Harvey Irma Jose Katia
Lee Maria Nate Ophelia Philippe Rina Sean Tammy Vince Whitney
Tropical Depression – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less. Tropical Storm – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph.

“Committed to guiding and supporting our students through an individualized approach to education, it’s been an honor to watch Matt grow as a musician over the past five years, since the band’s inception. We are very proud of his hard work and this amazing milestone.” For the past five consecutive years, Scheck Hillel Community School has hosted District 20’s Thursday Solo & Ensemble adjudication to create an opportunity for student-musicians to participate in the adjudication and uphold their observance of Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath). This opportunity is made possible thanks to the joint efforts of FBA and Scheck Hillel. Scheck Hillel Upper School provides students with the opportunity to continue exploring their study of music during the school day in orchestra, band or music production. In Upper School Orchestra, students can learn the violin, viola, cello or bass. Upper School students interested in learning flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone or tuba have the option to take either Upper School Beginner Band or Upper School Advanced Band. Upper School students who excel in both their academic and musical achievements, are inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

check Hillel Community School recent graduate, Matt Levine finished up his senior year with quite a bang by receiving amazing accolades for his accomplishments. Not only did he earn the second-highest rating, an “EXCELLENT” evaluation, for his snare drum solo participation in the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) State Solo and Ensemble Adjudication this past spring, he also received the John Philip Sousa Award from Scheck Hillel, a top national award for Band students. Matt advanced to State after the fall 2016 adjudication, which made him Scheck Hillel’s first Band student to advance to this level. Matt’s love for playing the drums started at just 7-years-old. Fast forward 10 years, and he has expanded his musical education to include additional music genres and instruments. He recently graduated from Scheck Hillel, and plans on attending the University of Miami when he returns from taking a gap year in Israel. He wants to pursue a career in legal studies and business, but still intends on playing and producing music. “Music is my passion,” says Matt. However, when this bright musician is not making music, he likes to spend his time helping in the community. He volunteers at The Friendship Circle, a nonprofit organization which assists children with special needs. He led the North Miami Chapter while he was in the tenth grade. “Matt’s achievement is the result of countless hours of hard work, dedication, passion and perseverance,” said Matt Villa, Scheck Hillel’s band director.

Build Community Trust Through Collaboration BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM
M
uch of the change in the policing profession revolves around the community taking an interest in how the police conduct themselves and how they interact with the public. As the public demands more from the police, the police need to strive to gain trust and remain legitimate. Community trust is an established and highly honored relationship between an agency and the citizens it has been entrusted to serve. Therefore, it is the cornerstone of successful policing and law enforcement, built on the foundation of a strong police culture that values integrity, character and competence, and holds individuals accountable for their behavior and actions. Knowing that trust can be built with character and competence, we use this template to safeguard the trust relationship with the public. According to Covey and Merrill, by establishing, restoring, and working on trust constantly, a positive relationship will develop that nets effective collaboration and results.

A literature review on trust as it relates to the police and community relationship suggests collaboration starts with trust. So without trust in the Police the community will not assist, cooperate or obey the police. The American system of justice itself relies on the public to “see something say something”. Without trust in the police, the public will not report suspicious individuals whether criminal or terrorist. Many strategies exist for engaging in effective community outreach with the goal of enhanced community trust, for example, P.A.C.T. (POLICE AND COMMUNITY TOGETHER). P.A.C.T. is an initiative that allows the police and the citizens they serve to come together in a cooperative spirit of helping each other to achieve a crime free community. After crime information has been gathered and analyzed by the police, the police will deploy the PACT Team into specific neighborhoods, to help reduce specific crime problems, and at a later time, evaluate their efforts. The PACT Team utilizes the Crime Prevention Unit Mobile Resource Center into specific neighborhoods and business areas of the city which have been chosen based on recent crime trends identified in the area.

In our attempt to build trust, we think about these meetings with the public as ‘teachable moments”’; we educate the attendees, solicit their assistance, listen to their concerns and value their input. We also discuss crime trends in specific areas, the benefits of and how start and maintain a Neighborhood Crime Watch. Attendees have the opportunity to either publically voice their opinions on the effectiveness of the meetings by completing a written satisfaction survey at the meeting, or if preferred, anonymously complete an on-line survey offered on-line by the police. No doubt, the police are condemned by the nature of their work to bear the brunt of feelings of resentment against authorities. Hence, trust in law enforcement is complex at best but vital to a working relationship with the public. Knee Pain – Do I Need Surgery? BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.
your physician. Knee pain may vary depending on the location and the severity. Some signs and symptoms may include: ▸▸ Swelling and stiffness ▸▸ Redness and warmth to the touch ▸▸ Weakness or instability ▸▸ Popping or crunching noises ▸▸ Inability to fully straighten the knee ▸▸ Inability to bear weight on your knee ▸▸ Knee feels like it “gives out” ▸▸ Knee feels “locked” and cannot be straightened or flexed ▸▸ Difficulty climbing stairs ▸▸ Visual deformity Many types of minor knee pain may respond well to self-care measures such as icing, wearing a knee brace, and elevating legs at the end of the day. However, in some cases, one may require pain management intervention to relieve the pain. ▸▸ Non-surgical, non-invasive treatments include: ▸▸ Physical Therapy - Strengthening exercises focused upon quadriceps, hamstrings (biceps femoris), and hip musculature can help stabilize the knee and slow or prevent further degenerative changes. ▸▸ Pharmacological Intervention – NSAIDs to reduce inflammation are often prescribed. ▸▸ Corticosteroid Injection – An injection into the knee joint can often provide pain relief. ▸▸ Knee Viscosupplementation – A thick and viscous fluid can be injected in one or a series of injections for pain due to arthritic changes classified as mild to moderate. ▸▸ Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) – Nerves are heated using radiofrequency energy in an injectable type of procedure for 90 seconds, with results of pain relief lasting 6-12 months. ▸▸ Amniotic Allograft Injection - Amniotic product morselizes the amnion tissue in an effort to preserve its structural properties in an injectable form. ▸▸ Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) – The patient’s own bone marrow is used to regenerate tissue and create bone formation. Your physician will help you determine which method is best for you before suggesting surgery. Surgery is an invasive and expensive path to pain relief, and is beneficial to only select patients. This is decided on factors such as body mass index (BMI), age, invasiveness, and/or other co-morbidities. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. A
common complaint that affects people of all ages is knee pain. General pain can be the result of various ailments, diseases, injury, or most often normal wear and tear which occurs with aging. Arthritis, gout, and other types of infections are medical conditions that also contribute to knee pain. The knee is made up of ligaments, cartilage, fluid, and bone which all work together. If any part of the knee structure is damaged or diseased, everyday life may be severely impacted. In order to determine the right treatment and recovery method, it’s best to define the exact kind of pain to
