There’s Much to Celebrate on July 4th

W

e celebrate the United States’ independence from England each year on July 4th. In 1776, the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, declaring the 13 colonies were no longer subject to British rule. While U.S. independence is clearly the most significant historical event on July 4th, interestingly, several other important events have taken place on this particular day. On July 4th, 1827, the State of New York abolished slavery. At one time, New York had the second largest slave population among the colonies. This legal act eventually led to the abolishment of slavery throughout the country and, in part, the Civil War. On July 4th, 1997, NASA’s Pathfinder landed on the surface of Mars. The landing and subsequent scientific mission were watched by people around the world, including by a young South African named Elon Musk and a Seattle book seller named Jeff Bezos. Those two would eventually go on to found SpaceX and Blue Origin, the world’s first privately funded space exploration companies, among other notable businesses. On July 4th, 1939, New York Yankees’ first baseman Lou Gehrig shocked the world by announcing his retirement from baseball and the fact that he was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Despite his horrible diagnosis, he captured the hearts of America by claiming that he was the “luckiest man on the face of the earth.” On July 4th, 1918, the Bolsheviks killed Russia’s Tsar and his family. In 1845, Henry David Thoreau moved into a log cabin at Walden pond. In 1803, Thomas Jefferson announced the signing of the Louisiana Purchase, the first step on America’s path to becoming a global Super-Power. And in 1976, Israeli commandos executed the most daring raid in military history, rescuing over 100 hostages in Entebbe, Uganda. Coincidentally, the United States is not the only nation to celebrate its independence on July 4th;so does the Philippines. This year, as you enjoy a traditional 4th of July barbecue followed by a patriotic fireworks show, think of all the other historical events that this day marks. Happy Birthday, America!

Seeing the Good in the Community – ‘Nacho Ordinary Eye Event’ BY BEVERLY PERKINS

F

or the 7th year, VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital (VCA HAH) and Animal Eye Guys (AEG) of South Florida participated in the “American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) National Service Dog Eye Exam” program. “During the month of May, we do free service exams for any service animal, whether it’s those who are visually impaired, or those who are emotional support animals. A lot of dogs who are coming in today do programs around the schools and libraries for children, so it’s a big mix. I think the important thing is, we’re dealing with dogs that are out working for people — the police dogs, the service dogs, the therapy dogs,” explained Dr. Robert Swinger, Veterinary Ophthalmologist and Owner of Animal Eye Guys of South Florida For over a decade, this program has offered free eye exams from Boarded Veterinary Ophthalmologists for pre-registered service animals throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Since it launched in 2008, over 16,000 service animals have been examined throughout the country. “These animals are going to the courts and work-

ing with children. They’re going to the nursing home and working with adults, hospitals with the sick. The National Service Dog Eye Exam program aims to give back to animals that give so much to the community,” added Swinger. On May 5th, seventy-five service animals were brought in for the “Nacho Ordinary Eye Event” at VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital for sight-saving exams while Animal Eye Guys saw another eighteen throughout the month. Among the attendees on Cinco de Mayo, were community service animals from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Canines for Community Resilience, the Broward County Court House Canines, the Humane Society of Broward County Assisted Therapy Animals, the Memorial Regional Hospital Service Dogs, Custom and Border Control K9s, as well as private service animals such as seeing eye dogs, medical alert, and emotional support animals from organizations such as Vets, Lighthouse for the Blind, and Look Through My Eyes. Additionally, teammates from Look Through My Eyes’ blind baseball team arrived together to support their sight impaired teammates as their service animals saw the veterinarian.

“Having been in practice for over 75 years, we feel we are a part of our community’s history and therefore tethered to its future. Partnering with the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and Animal Eye Guys seem the best way to support the service animals that support us,” exclaimed Linda Ream, Communications Coordinator VCA Hollywood.

T

he Broward League of Cities recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to four accomplished and outstanding Broward County high school seniors at the 2019 Broward League of Cities Scholarship Award Dinner in late April at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre and Art Gallery. One of these “Fab Four” students included Taryn Bradley of Hollywood. All four students plan to pursue a career in public service, public policy, government, and/or community affairs. These students were selected for their demonstrated involvement in work, internships, and volunteerism in governmental, community, and legislative environments. Bradley was recognized for her passion of helping the community at home and around the world. Much of the McArthur High School student’s volunteer work has been

done through the school through the numerous opportunities presented to her. During her four years, she participated on the robotics team where she had done much outreach with those less fortunate. Just last year, the dedicated student worked with a group of foster kids to create their own Lego League (FLL) team. Additionally, she tutored those outside of school and has created a blog to help first-generation

college applicants like herself. “I’ve learned a lot from the work that I’ve done. I’ve never had the opportunity to travel the world to help others, but I think it’s really rewarding to see the help that is needed in your own community and to be able to provide assistance to those that need it,” explained Bradley. “More than that though, my work with the kids on the FLL team and the people I’ve tutored have helped me to understand other

people and where they come from, as well as how I can help them specifically, so I think that has been really rewarding for me as well.” Bradley recently graduated with a 3.6 GPA and over 573 community service hours. She plans on attending The University of Florida to pursue a career in public service. In its ninth consecutive year, the Broward League of Cities’ Scholarship for Government Program has donated more than $32,000 in scholarships for Broward County students dedicated to public service. “Considering the rising costs of college, I knew going into my application process that I was going to need a lot of financial assistance to make attending college possible. I’m lucky to have the opportunity to go to college, buy I’m even luckier to be receiving this scholarship to make college affordable for me,” added the excited 18-yearold graduate.

HOME & DESIGN

Mixed Metals – Go Bold with Gold & Silver BY NEVINE GROULX, ETHNICA DESIGNS

R

emember the days when you had to declare yourself a gold or silver person? When rooms had to choose their metallic preferences? The conception was that each and every piece of hardware, fixture and artwork had to match perfectly otherwise you’d be at risk of clashing. In the world of interior design there used to be an unfortunate adage that came out of the 80s that said, “Don’t mix gold with silver tones or mix your metals”. Those days are over with more and more interior designers proving that mixed metallics can be just as stylish. Cool metallic tones as silver, nickel and steel can bring a slick modern aesthetic, while warmer tones as gold, rose gold, bronze and brass are inviting, flattering and glamorous. The mixture of the two offers unique looks, modern with a touch of glamour, minimalism with an inviting appeal, and rawness refined. It reflects light to a room which many times open up a space and always give a dull place a more interesting and unexpected touch to a home. The trick with using gold and silver tones is to mix both with different softer textures to balance each of them out. To master this approach to styling, pay careful attention to how each element relates to the others and don’t introduce too many styles. A couple of decorative pieces will do well such as mirrors, side or floor lamps, or candle holders. It’s best to try and find a common thread which unites each piece together. Sometimes the best way to make finishes coordinate elegantly is to make none of them truly match at all which is called the “mismatched magic”. Mixed metals are a home decor trend that is here to stay. Mixing metal finishes is also a budget friendly option because it doesn’t require you to purchase new furniture or fixtures every time you want to update or upgrade a space. Nevine Groulx for Ethnica Designs has been designing interiors for 15 years. She received her interior design certification from Smart Majority School of Design in England and has been a prominent and well-known designer in Canada for the past 15 years. She now resides permanently in South Florida and can be reached at 954-600-0401 or by email ethnicadesigns@hotmail.com. OURCITYMEDIA.COM | JULY 2019 25

ASK THE EXPERT

Making Sense of Facial Rejuvenation BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ifestyle lift, S-Lift, Whisper lift, Feather lift, etc. The names go on and on but these procedures are almost identical. Cosmetic surgeons will change the name of a straightforward procedure in an attempt to gain new patients, attract attention to “their” practice, or to lure an uneducated patient into thinking that “their” procedure is somehow “better” than what has been done thousands of times before by well-qualified plastic surgeons. I will attempt to clarify this terminology with an explanation of facelift technique and indications. The original “facelift procedure” was performed by Dr. Eugen Höllander in 1901, and involved elevating with tightening the facial skin only. The procedure has evolved and undergone multiple transformations. Today, a facelift typically involves elevation of the skin on cheek and neck with tightening of the underlying muscle (the SMAS in the cheek and the platysma on the neck). The 21st Century approach to facial rejuvenation focuses on a structured reconstruction as well with fat grafting and tissue tightening. As the skin ages there is a progressive loss of collagen and elastic which results in increased skin laxity. This skin change, coupled with loss of the underlying soft tissue volume, results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, and neck bands. In order to improve the appearance of the face and neck, a skin tightening procedure should be performed. This can be accomplished several ways, lifting and removing excess skin, a skin resurfacing procedure with laser or chemical peel, or restoring loss of soft tissue volume with fat or synthetic fillers. These techniques can be used alone or in a combination depending on each person’s individual facial anatomy and appearance goals. In describing face lifting procedures, the facial skin is elevated, the underlying muscle is tightened and excess skin is removed. When the skin laxity is limited to the cheek area, a mini – or short-scar facelift, can be performed (scar is limited to the area in the front of the ear). If neck skin laxity and neck bands are present, additional incisions can be made behind the ear and under the chin. This technique is referred to as a full facelift, or face and neck lift. The Lifestyle lift and S-Lift have similar incisions with limited undermining or elevation of the face and neck skin. If there is heaviness or sagging of the eyebrow then a browlift or forehead lift is performed. The aging appearance of the upper and lower eyelids is treated with a blepharoplasty and is a separate procedure from a facelift. In certain cases, depending on the patient’s facial appearance, a facelift is performed in combination with soft tissue volume addition by fat transfer, skin smoothing with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing. All of the procedures can be performed under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s medical history and comfort level. The most important factor to consider when making a decision to have elective cosmetic surgery is the surgeon, the facility, and the anesthesia provider. Only have facial plastic surgery performed by a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery in an accredited outpatient facility or hospital. Anesthesia should be administered by a licensed, board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Sciatica Nerve Pain BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.

S

ciatica (pronounced sigh-at-eh-kah) is a term used to describe the symptoms of pain such as tingling, numbness, or weakness in the leg. The pain typically begins in the lower back and travels down the buttock and then down the large sciatic nerve in the back of each leg. Although sciatica is not a medical diagnosis, it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Common lower back problems such as a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis often cause sciatica symptoms. Physicians may diagnose a patient with sciatica if they have one or more of the following symptoms: ▸▸ Leg pain that is often described as burning, tingling, or numb ▸▸ Difficulty moving the leg, foot, and/or toes ▸▸ Sharp pain which makes it difficult to stand or walk ▸▸ Constant pain on one side of the buttock or leg ▸▸ Radiating pain down the leg and possibly into the foot ▸▸ Lower back pain Sciatic pain can vary from infrequent and annoying to constant and debilitating. This is usually a result of the location of the pinched nerve which can intensify during sudden movements or changing positions such as moving from a sitting to standing position. The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in the body and is made up of individual nerve roots which start in the lower back. Symptoms occur when the large nerve is compressed or irritated at or near its point of origin. The condition will need to be treated if it is severe with ongoing flare-ups of sciatic nerve pain, so it does not worsen over time. However, nonsurgical treatments in conjunction with certain exercise can relieve the pain most patients experience. These include heat/ice, pain medications such as muscle relaxers, and epidural steroid injections. Some may be temporary fixes and work for some patients but not all. When the pain is severe or does not get better on its own, a more structured treatment approach, and possibly surgery, may be the best option for preventing or minimizing future pain and/or dysfunction for those who cannot get relief otherwise. It’s best to share all your symptoms with your physician so the best approach can be made to design a treatment program. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 340, Aventura, 33180. To schedule an appointment, please call (305)932-1660. OURCITYMEDIA.COM | JULY 2019 29

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

“LUCCA”

Buckle Up: Seat Belt Safety BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM housands of people still die because they did not buckle up. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA)Exchange, nearly 33,000 people are killed in crashes and accidents each year. Wearing a seat belt can help reduce this number. Based on Isaac Newton’s first law of motion known as the Law of Inertia, “an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion (at a constant velocity) unless acted upon by an external force.” The Law of Inertia applies to the occupants of a vehicle. Bodies are traveling at the same speed as the vehicle even though they are just sitting. If the vehicle stops abruptly, whether it is a hard stop or an automobile accident, their body will continue moving forward, something must stop that motion and airbags usually are not enough. Seat belts prevent excessive injury when the vehicle and the body need to slow down in a hurry. This applies whether the occupants are in the driver seat, passenger seat or in the backseat. According to Angela Osterhuber, Director of the Pennsylvania Traffic Injury in Media, seat belts prevent occupants of the vehicle from serious injuries in five (5) ways: ▸▸ A seat belt keeps the occupants of the vehicle inside: “It is a myth that people are better off being thrown clear from the crash. People thrown from a vehicle are four times more likely to be killed than those who remain inside.” ▸▸ A seat belt restrains the strongest parts of the body: “Restraints are designed to contact the body at its strongest parts. For an older child or adult, these parts are the hips and shoulders, which is where the seat belt should be strapped.” ▸▸ A seat belt spreads out any force from the collision: “Lap-and-shoulder belts spread the force of the crash over a wide area of the body. By putting less stress on any one area, they can help avoid serious injury. A shoulder strap also helps keep the head and upper body away from the dashboard, steering wheel, and other hard interior parts of the automobile should one suddenly stop or hit another vehicle.” ▸▸ A seat belt helps the body to slow down: “What is it that causes injury? A quick change in speed. Seat belts help extend the time it takes for one to slow down in a crash.” ▸▸ A seat belt protects the brain and spinal cord: “A seat belt is designed to protect these two critical areas. Head injuries may be hard to see immediately, but they are deadly. Likewise, spinal cord injuries can have serious consequences.” Safety devices are very important in our everyday life. Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. Being buckled up during a crash helps keep you safe and secure inside of your vehicle. Airbags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them. It takes only a few seconds to snap in your seat belt once you get in the car. Buckling your seat belt should be a habit. Buckle Up and be Safe!
