We Have Much to be Thankful For

M

any of us take a moment to sit back and give thanks during November. At Our City Media, we have something special to be thankful for, our eighth magazine, Our City Fort Lauderdale, was launched this month! Our City Fort Lauderdale is just like this magazine – full of local community and school news stories and delivered to our readers’ mailboxes every month. We are proud that Our City Magazines are a little bit different than other magazines you might receive. We are deliberately and specifically a local magazine and strive to be your source for community and school news. We are also quite proud of our positive voice. Don’t look in these pages for gotcha journalism, crime blotters or divisive political exposés. You won’t find them. However, do look for uplifting stories such as the incredible, selfless acts our neighbors performed before, during and after the recent hurricanes. You also might find pictures of a cute little puppy or a group of students competing in a science fair. In this time of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for the wonderful group of people we work with, the incredible communities we serve, and the hard-working local businesses and advertising partners that make publishing this magazine possible.

ACES Athletes Score Big in the Classroom, On the Court, and On the Field!

SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hat started as an intramural program at Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) in 2005, has blossomed into a fullfledged 6th – 8th grade athletic program that currently plays in the tri-county Independent Athletic League (IAL). The ACES Eagles athletic program now consists of eight teams. Boys compete in Flag Football, JV Basketball (Grades 6-7), Varsity Basketball (Grades 6-8), and Soccer, while the girls compete in Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, and Cheerleading. Playing on an athletic team at ACES is a privilege and is earned by hard work on the court or field, as well as hard work in the classroom. A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required to be eligible to play, as is exemplary behavior inside and outside of the classroom. “The main goal of our athletic program is to provide our student-athletes with an opportunity to gain positive and meaningful experiences that will enhance their growth and development as they transition to High School and beyond,” said Athletic Director Donald Krumrie. “Our student-athletes understand that they represent the school and their team at all times and they take great pride in doing so!” Since joining the IAL in 2011, the ACES Eagles have enjoyed a substantial

amount of success, which includes seven Championships and five runner-up finishes. Upon entering the Middle School lobby three trophy cases hold awards, trophies and pictures of the winning teams. Middle School athletics is a bridge to High School athletics and ACES has done a tremendous job of preparing its athletes for the next level. This is evident in the number of former ACES athletes that are currently, or have previously, competed at the High School or College level. Bobby DeLillo, a former ACES player and current Mast Academy star, states that “Everything I learned on the sports teams at ACES has transcended into High School sports. I gained a hunger to win, learned how to push myself to limits, learned how to lead by example, work as a team, communicate and be a leader on and off the court, and improve my game in ways that could best help the team.” “The time and energy expended is endless when it comes to having a positive impact on our student-athletes” adds Krumrie. “Our ACES Athletic Program is committed to fostering opportunities and growth and providing each participant with memories and experiences they will be able to look back on and appreciate!”

Every day is an open house. Schedule your private family tour today. From early childhood through Grade 12, Scheck Hillel Community School educates and inspires students to become exemplary global citizens with enduring Jewish identity and values through an individualized college preparatory curriculum highlighted by STEM and design, Capstone, college dual enrollment, arts, athletics and service learning. Our 14 acres include a 115,000-sq.-ft athletic complex with additional academic expansion plans. Scheck Hillel is one of the world's largest Jewish community day schools and a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. We are more than your child’s school; we are your family’s community.

he issue of driving is one many seniors and their families will face. It is one that is often inevitable when there is a diagnosis of dementia. It is important to know that a person with dementia usually does not self-limit his/her own driving. And in almost every state, physicians are not mandated to report someone they feel is unsafe to drive. For those reasons, the burden often falls onto a family member to make the decision. Direct Line When trying to decide if the person should continue to drive, there are many factors to consider other than memory. Families tend to focus on if the person remembers where they are going and are they at risk of getting lost. The solution is to allow driving to continue, but only to familiar locations. However, people with dementia experience deficits in several other areas that are key to driving. For example, it is common for a person to have problems with depth perception. This makes it difficult for the driver to determine how close other cars and objects are. Determining if there is time to pull out into traffic or turn before an approaching car reaches them are some of the issues faced when there is impaired depth perception. Decision making and the ability to anticipate events also becomes more problematic. A driver may see a ball roll into the road, but be unable to anticipate that a child could be running for it. Or he/she may be taxed with deciding quickly what to do when an unanticipated event does occur. Divided attention also can become challenging for a person with dementia. The ability to look at the speedometer and then back at the road can be difficult. The driver may find it challenging to continue to focus on driving, while giving attention to a bicyclist or pedestrian on the side of the road. In addition to problems due to dementia, there are normal changes that occur with aging that bring their own challenges. A decline in vision and hearing, decreased flexibility, and a slower reaction time are common changes that happen as a person ages. All key factors to a person being able to drive successfully. Regular inspections of your loved one’s car for dings, dents, or scratches may help to determine if there are issues, especially with depth perception. Talk to your loved one’s neighbors to determine if they have noticed any problems. And go for a drive with your loved one to observe any possible difficulties. Watch to see if they are signaling properly. Do they check thoroughly before changing lanes? Are they able to properly maintain their speed and the distance between cars? It is important to know that if a senior is involved in a car accident, he/she is more likely to suffer serious injuries than a younger driver. And statistics show that a senior citizen is at a higher risk of death when involved in a car crash, even one that appears minor. If you are concerned about your loved ones driving, please discuss this with his/her physician. Although a doctor is not mandated to report, many are more willing when they know the family is on board. In addition, explore the use of a driving assessment program and tools available which can help in determining abilities and limitations.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

The Show Must Go On – Tito Puente Jr. Concert Offers Hurricane Irma Relief

n celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Tito Puente Jr. and his Latin Jazz Ensemble were scheduled to perform a free concert on September 15th. However, Hurricane Irma showed up for her unwanted performance in South Florida earlier in the week, so no one was sure if the show would go on. Although North Miami Beach did not receive the worst of her fury, she still left much damage in her wake. The City used this opportunity to not only commemorate Hispanic Heritage, but to create a relief concert for those in need. “There is disaster relief and Irma relief and tonight we’re going to celebrate stress relief with some great Latin jazz from Tito Puente Jr and his Latin Jazz Ensemble,” added Commissioner Barbara Kramer. The City of North Miami Beach Multi-Cultural Committee hosted the event at the Julius Littman Performing Arts Theater. Approximately 300 people attended the event where necessities were collected to send to those in areas affected by Mother Nature. The legendary, high-energy bandleader and percussionist honored his father’s magical musical legacy with his band, and The City of North Miami Beach residents were able to put aside the stress of hurricane preparation and restoration and mambo the night away while helping others. “We did get through this hurricane and life is getting back to normal but we are not going to let a storm or anything else keep us down. It’s time to breakaway and forget about all that heat, missing school and it’s time to have some fun tonight,” said Mayor George Vallejo. “I want to recognize my colleagues on the city commission, because they agree graciously every year to make sure that we fund and hold these types of events which are so important for the community.”

he Aventura Marketing Council / World-Class Chamber of Commerce’s (AMC) September breakfast meeting saluted those that went above the call of duty before, during, and after Hurricane Irma. “We all know of the many, many people and companies who have truly gone above and beyond to help those in need such as our police and fire first responders, FPL, schools, hospitals, as well as many businesses and individuals who have opened their hearts and their doors to those in need,” states Elaine Adler, President of the AMC. “But, our Aventura Police Department is certainly one to recognize. The depth and breadth of the efforts just one police department devoted to helping others is a shining example of what many police and fire departments have done.” Prior to the storm the Aventura Police Department compiled a list of vulnerable spots and special needs. This was compiled from Property Manager reports and from a survey conducted in person at every single property by the Community Policing Unit (CP). The following areas were quickly identified as areas of concern and a decision was made to constantly monitor these areas: Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities, Hospitals, Communities with no

generators, and Special Needs Residents that did not evacuate. In a joint effort with Captain Labombarda, the CP was assigned to Community Outreach, Special Needs and Humanitarian efforts. The Captain maintained constant communications with virtually all Property Managers in the City and forwarded

any concerns to officers in the field. During the storm, officers from the Emergency Operations Center team used this time to organize the information collected prior to the storm. “We realized during the storm that the magnitude Irma would have on our Community would be huge and we pre-planned a huge response so that as soon as we were given the green light we could hit the

ground running,” said Sergeant Chris Goranitis, City of Aventura Police Public Information Officer. After the storm officers began an assessment of the entire City. They visited every single community twice per day and every business visited once per day. Officers Bill David, Helen Morrison, Michael Giordano, James Martin were at Palm Gardens around the clock delivering ice, water, coffee and fans until their power was restored. Officers Teresa Williams, Helen Morrison, Manny Gonzalez, Michael Giordano and Public Service Aide Michelle Augustine transported several elderly and special needs residents to various shelters. The following officers went door to door after the storm checking on all of them: Teresa Williams, Helen Morrison, Michelle Augustine, Mike Giordano, Barbara Arocha, James Martin, Bill David, Manny Gonzalez, Travis, Jason Fernandez, Pete Fernandez, Ken Sealy, Brizuela, and Ernie Long. Officers Hans Maestre and William Curtis responded to stop looters from breaking into the mall during the peak of the storm. Finally, Sergeant Marc Frieder was instrumental in restoring power to all of the intersections and bringing a sense of normalcy back to the community so quickly.

Sciatica Nerve Pain BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. - AVENTURA

following symptoms: ▸▸ Leg pain that is often described as burning, tingling, or numb ▸▸ Difficulty moving the leg, foot, and/or toes ▸▸ Sharp pain which makes it difficult to stand or walk ▸▸ Constant pain on one side of the buttock or leg ▸▸ Radiating pain down the leg and possibly into the foot ▸▸ Lower back pain

ASK THE EXPERT

S

ciatica (pronounced sigh-at-eh-kah) is a term used to describe the symptoms of pain such as tingling, numbness, or weakness in the leg. The pain typically begins in the lower back and travels down the buttock and then down the large sciatic nerve in the back of each leg. Although sciatica is not a medical diagnosis, it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Common lower back problems such as a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis often cause sciatica symptoms. Physicians may diagnose a patient with sciatica if they have one or more of the

Sciatic pain can vary from infrequent and annoying to constant and debilitating. This is usually a result of the location of the pinched nerve which can intensify during sudden movements, or changing positions such as moving from a sitting to standing position. The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in the body and is made up of individual nerve roots which start in the lower back. Symptoms occur when the large nerve is compressed or irritated at or near its point of origin. The condition will need to be treated if it is severe with ongoing flare-ups of sciatic nerve pain so it does not worsen over time. However, nonsurgical treatments in conjunction with certain exercise can relieve the pain most patients experience. These include heat/ice, pain medications such as muscle relaxers, and epidural steroid injections. Some may be temporary fixes and work for some patients but not all. When the pain is severe or does not get better on its own, a more structured treatment approach, and possibly surgery, may be the best option to preventing or minimizing future pain and/or dysfunction for those who cannot get relief otherwise. It’s best to share all your symptoms with your physician so the best approach can be made to design a treatment program. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

“MIKI”

Financial Frauds BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM

R

ecent studies estimate that between 12.5% and 15% of the population are self-reported victims of financial fraud. Experts in the field are well aware that financial fraud goes largely unreported, and they believe that reporting one’s victimization is complicated by feelings of shame and guilt, as well as other complex factors, such as: ▸▸ Not knowing where to turn ▸▸ Feeling that reporting wouldn’t make a difference ▸▸ Fear that reporting will lead to a loss of legal or financial control ▸▸ Threats and intimidation from the perpetrators ▸▸ Loss of esteem or prestige in a victim’s social group ▸▸ Lack of confidence in the ability of authorities to respond and assist Fortunately, in every community there are individuals in a position to provide tangible help to victims. One valuable contribution they can make to the cause of fighting financial fraud is to encourage victims to report the crime. Advocates can help victims overcome the stigma of being “taken” by a fraudster. The fraudsters are masters of persuasion, who tailor their pitch to match the psychological profiles of their targets, and ensnare their victims into making an emotional, irrational decision. To learn more about the psychology of scam, visit www.SaveAndInvest.org/ FraudCenter. In addition to the Victim Advocates, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) enlists the service of senior volunteers to join the Seniors vs. Crime (SVC) program, a special project of the Florida Attorney General’s Office. The primary goal of the SVC program is to reduce the victimization of senior citizens, who are often the target of specific crime(s) because of their age and trusting nature. Therefore, if a senior citizen feels that some unscrupulous person or business has cheated her/him out of money or have not delivered what was promised, he/she can come to the NMBPD and have his case reviewed by the senior sleuths. Since the inception of the SVC program, the NMBPD has resolved hundreds of cases. In some cases, funds were recovered for the complainant, other cases were resolved to satisfaction, (i.e. the complainant did not receive any monetary settlement, but the original job was completed). The vast majority of the countless instances of financial frauds that the NMBPD receives and resolves fall into four (4) categories: Identity theft, Investment Fraud, Mortgage and Lending Fraud, Mass Marketing and Other Fraud. A brief description of each is provided below; Identity Theft: is a crime that involves the illegal access and use of an individual’s personal and/or financial information. Investment Fraud: generally, refers to wide range of deceptive practices that scammers use to induce investors to make investing decisions. Mortgage and Lending Fraud: traditional mortgage fraud includes situation in which homebuyers and/or lenders falsify information to obtain a home loan. Mass Marketing And Other Fraud: mass marketing is the use of false promises of cash prizes, services, goods, or good works in exchange for fees, donations or purchases. In future articles, we will provide some resources to help you protect yourself from fraudsters and prevent future scams as victims of financial frauds are at risk for “re-victimization”. For any questions, please contact the NMBPD Crime Prevention Unit at (305) 948-2955 ext. 2560. To learn more about the City of North Miami Beach Police Department, please visit www.citynmb.com. For emergencies, please dial 9-1-1 and all other non-emergencies, please call (305) NMB-POLICE or (305) 662-7654.
