THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

A Walk Down Memory Lane– HHS Walking Tour BY BEVERLY PERKINS

couple of years ago The Hollywood Historical Society (HHS) and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) created a program to show Hollywood’s future generations about its unique past. The project was spearheaded by the two groups, along with some private history buffs, including Mayor Josh Levy even before he became Mayor. Together the ambitious group compiled a great list of historic landmarks in Hollywood’s Historic District and honored them with a plaque dedication ceremony led by Mayor Levy. Currently, there are a total of seventeen historical informational plaques on buildings along the North and South sides of Hollywood Boulevard as well as on 20th and 21st Avenues. The plaques are part of a self-guided walking tour similar to the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project (DHMP) tour, and a printable map and information is available on the Hollywood Historical Society’s webpage at Hollywoodhistoricsociety.org under the tab TOURS for residents and visitors to enjoy. Residents and visitors alike can pick up informational brochures around town at shops, tourist agencies, and the Hollywood CRA office so they can see the 18 NOVEMBER 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

landmark properties at their leisure. The plaques will provide all the historical facts about what the specific structure was in the past and show an accompanying photo. “Some of the plaques can be seen on iconic properties such as Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, Anniversary Park, Morningstar’s Jewelers which building was the first business in Hollywood, Joseph Young’s Hollywood Land and Water Company and Melina’s Lingerie Shoppe,” exclaimed Karen Albertson, HHS President. Phase One of the project acknowledged eight properties. The first plaque was dedicated to the structure at 1934 Hollywood Blvd which was once the Hollywood Publishing Company & Hollywood News building. Phase Two in Downtown Hollywood is now finalized with eleven more. As soon as the passage of

the 2019 budget is complete they are hoping to continue the final phase on Hollywood Beach. “Our project for the Historic Landmark Plaque Tour has been an exciting way to inform our residents and tourists about the rich and diverse history of our beautiful City of Hollywood. It has been a tremendous success, and people want more, so hopefully in 2019 we can add additional historic plaques around town,” added Albertson. orean Immigrant Goes from Living in Poverty to Building Family-Focused Martial Arts Academy In Aventura & Sunny Isles Beach Master Sang Koo Kang runs a martial arts academy that provides a stable, family friendly environment where students can excel. However, its two locations, in Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach, are a long way from its founder’s origins in Korea. Korean Immigrant Achieves the American Dream Sang Koo Kang was born in Seoul, Korea in 1966. Like many Korean children at the time, Sang’s early childhood was hard and his only escape from the harsh realities of life was his introduction, at the age of 5, to Tae Kwon Do. He later emigrated to the United States. Much of his early life and teens were spent living in poverty, yet he continued his Tae Kwon Do training. Eventually,

he became a champion as well as a stand-out football player. The work ethic he developed while training in Martial Arts led him to Florida State University in Tallahassee. While at Florida State, Sang “walked on” to the football team, earning a spot and playing all four years. In 1990 Sang opened his first martial arts school in Miami Beach. He later added locations in Miami Gardens and Pembroke Pines; soon Sang had ten locations throughout South Florida. The poor kid from Korea became a multi-sport athletic star, college graduate and successful business owner. The TNT Difference After selling off his previous locations, Sang now operates two locations: Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach. Master Sang believes his schools’ emphasis on compassion, patience and self-perseverance are

what set it apart from other academies. In addition with working with children, Master Sang offers custom training and individualized private lessons for business executives, working professionals and even a few celebrities and professional athletes. Kids Martial Arts Classes Master Sang’s TNT Kids Martial Arts classes provide a fast-paced, funfilled, self-defense workout that helps kids grow in a positive, well-disciplined, yet challenging way. Each Kids Martial Arts class is filled with

high-energy, age-appropriate drills that have been carefully designed to build strength, stamina and endurance, as well as develop the important life skills your child will need to be successful in life. n Master Sang’s TNT Martial Arts Academy is located in Aventura at 19076 NE 29th Ave and in Sunny Isles Beach at 400 Sunny Isles Blvd. They offer classes for all ages, abilities and genders. ifteen years ago, a special group of volunteers at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation spent their time advocating and raising funds for the hospital to reinforce its’ mission to heal an individual’s body, mind and spirit. These volunteers, appropriately called The Diamond Angels, have raised more than 6 million dollars since its inception in 2004. Their main event, “The Fairy Tale Ball”, supports children, families, programs, services, and facilities at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. This year The Diplomat Beach Resort grand

ballroom will undergo a winter wonderland transformation. The Frozen-themed fundraiser, presented by Ultimate Software will be held on Saturday, November 17th at the newly-renovated Hollywood Beach property. The much-anticipated “15th annual Fairy Tale Ball” is one that would make Disney’s Queen Elsa proud. The evening will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, dancing, and auctions of dream vacations and unique experiences. Guests will enjoy and sing along with The Lords of 52nd Street, musical legends from Billy Joel’s band. They will also have the opportunity to hear a heart-warming emotional story from a family whose child received life-saving treatment at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “We’re committed to making things better for families in our community coping with pediatric health issues,” said Fairy Tale Ball Chair Ronnie Cloyd, a leader of the volunteer Diamond Angels that annually host the event on behalf of the Joe

DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. “The gala definitely has something for everyone and the impact of all our efforts is significant and long-lasting.” “Love is putting someone else’s needs before yours.” – Olaf from Frozen Cast Tax deductible tickets are $300 each and purchasable at www.diamondangels.org or by calling 954-265-3454. The Diplomat Beach Resort is located at 3555 S. Ocean Drive in Hollywood. Established in 1994, the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation provides philanthropic support to JDCH by serving as the central agency for charitable contributions. This helps to ensure the ongoing availability of the highest quality of healthcare to hospital patients regardless of their ability to pay. For more information, visit www.jdchfoundation.org.

or twelve years now, South Floridians have been celebrating “Christmas Near the Beach” (CNTB) at ArtsPark in Young Circle. Each year the free jam-packed extravaganza continues to expand by featuring new activities and performances. Locals and visitors have made the annual event a family tradition as they prepare for the signature December holiday. A 40-foot-tall lighted tree, a Christmas pageant complete with Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, and angelic dancers from the Cornerstone Ballet Company, music and dance led by DJ Mr. E and his hip-hopper Sean Olivera, along with plenty of gift giveaways by local businesses and Moody Radio are just a few features on this year’s list. However, the highlight of the event each year is the arrival of the jolly man in the red suit. Saint Nick will make his stylish entrance on a classic car led by the Florida Sunshine Marching Band. He will then head over to his “Beach House” to take free photos with all his visitors on his sleigh. Those that visit will be offered a free raffle ticket and one family will walk away with Santa’s personal 7-foot Christmas tree. “It’s a free party in a 10-acre park in the heart of the city. a blanket. CNTB brings community together to celebrate the joy of Christmas,” said Deena McDaniel, Festival Coordinator. New for this year will be “Grinchy Got Saved,” a parody of the children’s book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Previous CNTB celebrations have featured a single song with the skating performance by Grinchy, Photo Credit: Jim Davis but this year will include a half-hour play based on the story. It will include ballet dancers, costumed characters, a live nativity scene, even hip-hoppers; all in a parable of how Jesus can change even the heart of a mean, green, furry creature. Also new to the line-up will be the choir of First Presbyterian Church of Margate. The 30-voice choir will sing a blend of traditional and contemporary styles with a keyboard accompaniment. Additionally, Andrew Curran, a professional Santa

Claus and member of the national Real Beard Santa organization will reprise his singing performance from last year. “I’ve been amazed to find out that thousands of people in South Florida have made it their own Christmas party,” added McDaniel. LEGALLY SPEAKING

I Got in a Car Accident! Now What? BY CARLOS D. CABRERA s of October 1, 2018, there have been over 290,000 motor vehicle accidents in the state of Florida. With such frightening statistics, it seems a car accident in one’s lifetime is almost inevitable. Hopefully, you will never get into an accident but if you do, you should know your rights and remember to follow some common-sense tips. What are my rights after a car accident? Under Florida law, every driver is required to carry a minimum of $10,000.00 in personal injury protection (PIP) coverage and $10,000.00 in property damage (PD) coverage. Regardless of fault in the accident, Florida law requires your own PIP policy to cover 80% of your medical expenses and 60% of lost wages that are related to the accident. As a result, you have a right to PIP coverage up to a maximum of $10,000.00 under your own PIP policy for treatment and lost wages arising from your car accident, subject to any deductibles you may have chosen. Also, if you meet a certain threshold, you may be able to make a claim against the person(s) at fault for the accident. Accident victims should consult a lawyer immediately to discuss the specifics of their injuries to determine if they meet the threshold. With regard to PD coverage, it covers damage to property you caused in a car accident. It does not provide coverage to your own vehicle or property. There are, of course, many types of other coverages available for purchase. However, Florida law only requires PIP and PD coverage; all other coverages are optional, with some exceptions; for example, if you lease or finance a vehicle, the contract may require you to carry specific coverages and limits. What should I do after a car accident? If possible, attempt to do all of the following without risking further injury or damage: (1) Call the police and make a police report – get a copy of the driver exchange form from the responding police officer; (2) Seek emergency medical treatment, if necessary; (3) Take pictures of your damaged vehicle, the at-fault driver’s vehicle, and the accident scene; (4) Take names, addresses and phone numbers of witnesses; and (5) Take pictures of your injuries. What if I am at fault for my accident? Even if you may have been partly at fault for your accident, you may still be able to recover for your injuries. Florida follows the comparative negligence rule, which means that you can still recover for your injuries if you are at fault, but your recovery may be reduced by your percentage of fault as determined by the trier of fact (usually, a jury). For example, if you are found to be 25% at fault, you may still be able to recover 75% of your damages. This material is provided for general information only and is not intended to provide any legal advice. Every case is unique. Speak to your own lawyer about the specifics of your case.

ASK THE EXPERT

Making Sense of Breast Enhancement BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. They are: periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T,” or anchor incision, same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold. All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. ASJ THE EXPERT

Lower Back Pain BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. nfortunately, one of the most common areas of pain is in the lower back. The lumbar spine, also known as the low back, interconnects the bones, joints, nerves, ligaments, and muscles. The structure works together to provide support, strength, and flexibility. But, because this structure is so complex, it leaves the low back susceptible to injury and pain. Furthermore, the region supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday actions such as bending and twisting. Lower back muscles are also responsible for flexing and rotating hips while walking, as well as being support for the spinal column. The nerves in the low back supply sensation and give power to the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet. Usually mechanical issues and soft-tissue injuries are the cause of low back pain. These types of injuries can include damage to the intervertebral discs, compression of nerve roots, and improper movement of the spinal joints. But the most common cause is typically a torn or pulled muscle and/ or ligament. A variety of symptoms may occur when lower back pain is evident. They may be mild or severely debilitating. They may develop slowly over time or just come on suddenly. The symptoms are also a result of the underlying cause of the pain. The time course of the pain will also help determine the cause. The body will also react to the injury by mobilizing an inflammatory healing response which in turn presents more pain. A muscle may be strained if it is stretched too far and tears. Therefore, damaging the muscle itself. It may be sprained when over-stretching and tearing affects the ligaments which connect the bones together. However, regardless if the muscle or ligament is damaged, the symptoms and treatment are the same. It’s advised to speak to a physician if the following symptoms are occurring: ▸▸ Achy, dull pain is present in the low back ▸▸ Numbness or tingling (sciatica), perhaps even stinging or burning pain moves from the low back down to the back of thighs, and into the lower legs and feet ▸▸ Tightness in the low back, pelvis, and hips along with muscle spasms ▸▸ Pain worsens after prolonged sitting or standing ▸▸ Difficulty changing positions from standing to sitting and vice-versa

Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals

will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Thanksgiving: A Great Time to be Thankful BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM

T

raditionally, Thanksgiving Day had deep roots in religious tradition, but nowadays it is primarily celebrated as a secular holiday. It is a time for families to meet, socialize, and enjoy each other’s company while indulging in a signature Thanksgiving menu featuring the traditional turkey. Sometimes, the holiday is the only opportunity for people to get together for a special meal. Thanksgiving Day is also characterized by large parades; for instance, the well-known Macy’s Day Parade is always broadcasted nationwide alongside the National Football League games where people gather together to watch these events. The Thanksgiving holiday has also the reputation as a popular night to frequent bars and other drinking establishments. The day after Thanksgiving Day is characterized by heavy shopping encouraged by several enticing deals and discounts offered by retailers. Stores typically open early on Friday morning and people line up at night to be the first ones through the door when stores open so that they get the choicest “doorbuster deals”. That day is usually known as “Black Friday” because traditionally that is the day when retail stores go from red to black for the year. It is also worth noting that the day after Thanksgiving Day is the busiest day of the year for plumbers and septic companies who call it “Brown Friday”. The Monday after Thanksgiving is usually known as “Cyber Monday” because of the heavy online shopping people do on that day. All in all, the shopping, the seasonal parades, and the football games make the four-day weekend the busiest periods for travel. The congestion and overcrowding can cause disruption to traffic. In this regard, during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) will be focusing primarily on the use of seat belts.

Moreover, the NMBPD will not only conduct high visibility enforcement gearing toward seat belt use, but they will also be targeting aggressive, impaired, careless driving and speeding. Consequently, the NMBPD officers will issue a traffic citation to reckless and distracted drivers. It truly is not about writing tickets; instead, it is about saving lives during a time where heavy alcohol use may be a factor. It stands to reason that all drivers and passengers must include in their “Thanksgiving To-Do List” safety tips such as using a seat belt, no drinking, and no texting while driving. Whether an individual is driving across the country or just across town, using seat belts, and not consuming alcohol and/or drugs while driving will help ensure that a holiday tragedy can be avoided. The NMBPD wishes everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving Day. To learn more about the City of North Miami Beach Police Department, please visit www.citynmb.com. For emergencies, please dial 9-1-1 and all other non-emergencies, please call (305) NMB-POLICE or (305) 662-7654.
