Hurricane Season is Here Again
mangosfestival 1st annual

017 was, by far, the costliest hurricane season in United States history. More than $282 billion of damages were caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Many of us in South Florida are still feeling the impacts of Hurricane Irma. The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, especially in Puerto Rico, will have long consequences. Fortunately, 2018 is expected to be less active than 2017. Colorado State University hurricane researchers predict the 2018 hurricane season to be slightly more active than normal, with a predicted 14 named storms in the Atlantic basin. This is a far cry from last year’s two and half times more active environment.

It Only Takes One Storm According to the Tropical Cyclone Landfall Probabilities tool developed by researchers from Bridgewater State University and Colorado State, Broward County has about a 35% chance of having a hurricane make landfall this year and about a one in five chance of a major hurricane making landfall. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ▸▸ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ▸▸ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information and water. ▸▸ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in the case you lose power and water supply. ▸▸ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer. C

Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals
will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

ore than 1,500 people joined the annual Russian American Heritage Festival which celebrated Russian cultures and traditions with live music, special performances, delicious food, dancing, arts and crafts and so much more on a most beautiful weekend in April. Loyalty Miami is Always Loyal to Their Clients BY BEVERLY PERKINS
L
oyalty Miami has been helping individuals and companies establish themselves in the United States by providing a multitude of services, handling investments, and assisting with management and consultation. The group is known best for their EB-5 Visa program which has been a major source of clients’ funding as well as sourcing for acquisitions. In the past 2 years the ambitious group implemented more than 86 companies (with 74 fully operating) and structured and executed 80 new businesses. However, they are most proud of raising over 40 million dollars in 2017 to finance new projects in the United States. The outcome is unprecedented for companies and consultancy offices acting in this segment. The company, under the leadership of Daniel Toledo, offers local and international services to those who want to develop relationships in the United States. Planning and structuring the best investments is not easy, so it’s crucial to choose experienced and qualified professionals to ensure a successful outcome. Loyalty Miami is noted for having one of the most accomplished and professional teams in several areas of expertise. The firm is ready to guide and assist their clients to be sure they achieve their goals. Helping these individuals achieve the American dream has brought prosperity and growth to the company, in addition to recognition from other fellow
professionals. Along the way, Toledo has generated a lot a profit for his clients. Associated with innovation and credibility, Loyalty Group’s founding partner has stirred the real estate, hospitality, and retail markets in a remarkable way, besides many other segments in the luxurious destination many now call home. Daniel Toledo recently took the time to answer some questions about his growing practice. What markets do you operate in? Our area of expertise is not only limited to the United States. Portugal and Spain have also received new projects designed by my team. This work doesn’t stop inspiring businessmen, families, and professionals to invest and bet their resources in countries exhibiting a stable economic outlook. There are people counting on our creative vision to expand their brands and services. What have been some of your main projects? Over the last two years our main project has been the construction of real estate developments. One of them being the building of 44 townhouses which generated a gross profitability of 33.2% for each of the investors at the end of the project. Another project was completing two sports centers. We expected $400,000 to $420,000 in sales revenues per month and they are already reaching a gross of $580,000 which is well above the expected. I do the calculations in a very pessimistic way, so the surprise was even better!

eniors are being targeted for scams, subjected to high pressure sales tactics, switch and bait schemes, and false advertising too frequently. With the help of police and sheriff departments throughout the State of Florida, thousands of seniors were enlisted to document telemarketing calls, door to door sales pitches, all junk mail received and any unsolicited sales pitches over a 30- day period. As a result, many retired persons wanted to help in the fight against scams on a volunteer basis, and the “Seniors vs. Crime” (SVC) was founded with offices initially in five (5) counties with staffed volunteers, many of them retired policemen, lawyers, and accountants, to name a few. Having standalone offices was expensive and, therefore, the Attorney General’s Office went to police and sheriff departments throughout the state asking if they would be willing to host SVC Buying Properties Since 1985 volunteers at their Helping Sellers From Losing Their Property facility which would also make it easier to coordinate their work with law agencies. The partnership of the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) along with the Attorney General’s Office proved Martin Hoffman 0218 B.indd REPAIRS 1 1/19/18 4:16 PM PLUMBING • LOCATE LEAKS • PUMP, SEPTIC & GREASE TRAPS to be a win-win situation. ASK THE EXPERT
Alleviating Neck Pain BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.
M
any individuals suffer from chronic and acute conditions such as headaches, neck/back pain, fibromyalgia, facial pain, and sciatica to just name a few. Unfortunately, for quite some time there has been a lack of understanding in regard to chronic pain which has led to poor treatments and even worse outcomes. Neck pain is an extremely common area in which many experience discomforts. There are three general types of neck pain; ▸▸ Acute – Pain which lasts less than 4 weeks. ▸▸ Subacute – Pain which lasts 4-12 weeks. ▸▸ Chronic – Pain which last 3 or more months. ▸▸ Most who suffer from acute neck pain don’t even know what caused the issue, and oftentimes don’t even seek treatment. However, when the neck pain becomes subacute or chronic, then it’s likely that some form of medical guidance and/or treatment is required. Depending on the cause and conditions, there may be specific ways for effective treatments. These recommended tips can help prevent neck pain, and may also help alleviate any symptoms occurring:
Stay Hydrated The discs between the vertebrae in the cervical spine (neck) are comprised of approximately 80 percent water at birth. However, as one ages the ratio of water decreases, which can cause the discs to lose height, the spine to come out of alignment, and the pressure on the spine to increase. Staying hydrated throughout the day can help prevent further degeneration of the cervical discs, therefore eliminating neck pain. ▸▸ Set a daily water goal. Women typically need 2.2 liters, while men need 3 liters. ▸▸ Keep a reusable water bottle nearby at all times. ▸▸ Create new daily habits such as drinking a full glass of water when waking up each day.
Limit Hand-Held Phone Use A common habit many don’t even think about, but do all day long is cradle a phone in their neck while talking. This results in extra strain on the cervical spine. Also, many add additional stress on the neck by staring down at their phones for an extended period of time. This habit can, in fact, place up to 60 pounds of pressure on both the neck muscles and ligaments. ▸▸ Use a Bluetooth or hands-free headset. ▸▸ Hold the phone near eye level when texting or reading. ▸▸ Limit phone use when possible.
Apply Heat Therapy Good old-fashioned advice is to not overlook the benefits of heat therapy. Applying a heating pad or a hot water bottle for 20 minutes may produce the following benefits: ▸▸ An increase in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles encourages healing in the neck. ▸▸ The stimulation of sensory receptors in the skin hinder the transmission of pain signals to the brain. ▸▸ The stretching of soft tissues around the spine will decrease stiffness in the neck. It is suggested to try these tips even with severe neck pain, as they can provide even a little bit of relief from chronic symptoms. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 340, Aventura, 33180. To schedule an appointment, please call (305)932-1660.

SCHOOL NEWS
Miami Jewish Day Schools’ Robotics Festival Feedback was Phenomenal BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE), in collaboration with the Yerucham (Israel) Science Center, hosted its second International Robotics Festival in late spring at Scheck Hillel Community School. Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, six more schools joined the competition. The nine schools Brauser Maimonides Academy, The Gordon School of Beth David Congregation, Hebrew Academy (RASG), Hochberg Preparatory – a David Posnack Jewish Day School, Lehrman Community Day School, Scheck Hillel Community School, Temple Beth Am Day School, Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes Academy, and Yeshiva Elementary School, have been working hard on completing the Space Mission challenge using Lego EV3 and Space challenge sets. The festival showcased this innovative approach to STEM education which combines mathematics and science with Lego Education, enabling participating third- and fourth-grade students to grasp robotics principles
and work collaboratively to solve problems. The Miami Jewish Day School Robotics Program is funded through a $40,000 grant from the Miami/Yerucham Project, a collaboration between the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and its Israeli partnership city of Yerucham, and is facilitated by CAJE, a subsidiary agency of the Federation. This year, nine teachers participated in a oneweek training period at CAJE, facilitated by a visiting mentor from the Yerucham Science Center Robotics Program and one local coach from Lehrman Community Day School. These mentors prepared the participating teachers to implement a robotics curriculum in their respective schools. “It is particularly gratifying to see our students so excited and proud of their accomplishments as they master mathematical, programming and engineering skills in our fourth-grade robotics class,” said Ilana Traub, Media and Technology Specialist, Lehrman Community Day School. The day-school teachers agree that the program has given their
students the opportunity to focus on their strengths, develop new skills and work together to achieve set objectives. “This robotics program has maximized our students’ ability to become experts in a variety of areas, guided by their own personal interests,” said Nancy Penchev, media/technology teacher at Scheck Hillel Community School. “From coding to building Lego robots to designing space missions, robotics has fostered and increased collaboration. Students bring their knowledge to help each other and achieve a greater goal. It has been a real joy to learn along with them.” The program also has allowed the teachers to integrate Engineering into Science, Math, and Literacy activities. To learn more about the Miami Jewish Day School Robotics Program, please contact Audrey Maman, CAJE’s Program Manager for School Markets, at audreymaman@caje-miami.org or 305-5764030, ext. 141.
ACES Team of Teachers Made the Honor Roll Again BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
Each day of the dedicated week the teachers also received a special “thank you” gift including a trendy reusable water bottle with school logo. However, the highlight of the week was the “Main Event”. On this day teachers and administration were treated to an all-star event held at the Aventura Cultural Center. Keeping with the theme, a Miami Heat’s Burnie special rally took place with Miami Heat mascot Burnie getting the crowd excited before two former National Football League (NFL) players took the stage. Jay Fiedler (Quarterback) and Twan Russell (Linebacker) of the Miami Dolphins surprised everyone as they walked on stage and gave inspirational speeches. The afternoon followed with musical entertainment, refreshments, and more. “Teacher appreciation week is a testament to the partnership between the Aventura community and ACES, said Principal Julie Alm. “We are all a team dedicated to supporting one another with the singular goal of helping our children grow and thrive.” The significant week would not be possible without such generous sponsors: Bagel Cove Restaurant & Deli, Whole Foods Market, Uni K Wax Studios, European Wax Center, La Estancia Argentina, Bagelway Pizzaway, Aventura Hospital & Medical Center, Mo’s Bagels & Deli, Raw Republic, Raw Juce, InDolce TAW Volunteers Showing Their Love Confections, and MidiCi – the Neapolitan Pizza Company.
he Aventura Charter School, better known as Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES), recently held their Teacher Appreciation Week (TAW). Once again, the committee was led by dedicated parents who wanted to make sure the teachers felt appreciated and loved by all. Parent volunteers gathered, brainstormed, and planned an elaborate week of sweets, treats, and surprises for the faculty and staff to show their gratitude and admiration of all their effort, hard work, and dedication to their students. This year’s theme was sports, “One Team – One Family”. Volunteers brought in catered breakfasts and lunches amongst other fabulous gifts donated from the community. Custom themed decor adorned the halls and the teachers’ lounge where teachers enjoyed their delicious meals.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention
Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, ne needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

ACES Kindergartners Enjoyed a smART Field Trip! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
ventura Mall partnered with Just My Height Art Shows to present “smART Gallery”. The pop-up exhibition designed for children ages 5 to 8-years old featured over two dozen pieces of art in a variety of mediums created by local and international professional artists. The theme, “Letters and Numbers”, promotes literacy and numeracy in the community, and for the second consecutive year, the kindergartners at the Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) had the opportunity to experience the unique exhibit. The students were able to engage in interactive and hands-on stations that focused on a particular artist and his/her style and technique. “This educational gallery for kids is perfect for children to experience as their first-time exposure to the amazing world of visual arts. What’s best, is that this gallery is at eye-level and perspective for kids,” said ACES kindergarten teacher Ms. Zachar. “All the exhibits are perfectly sized and built for children.” The little Eagles were able to create their own art using diverse mediums. They created polka dot art using stickers to decorate a completely
white room. They loved the self-portrait station where they used mixed media of pastel, markers, and crayons to draw their own “selfie”. They also used letters and numbers to make their own original mixed media art to take home. Additionally, they explored the first-hand works of Piet Mondrain, Wassily Kandinsky, and Yayoi Kusama. “I like that we painted. It was very colorful, and we did lots of fun stuff!” exclaimed kindergartner S. Nuchamovitz. “I had a lot of fun!” The proceeds of the art work in the gallery benefit the Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership which help families gain literacy and language skills they need by developing parents’ roles as teachers, so children are better prepared for school. “The children were having so much fun, all while learning about the fundamentals of art and what makes the visual arts such an important aspect of any child’s life,” added ACES kindergarten teacher Mrs. L. Nunez. “Art is so important and necessary to foster creativity and expression. It was really nice to see this gallery provide children with that unique opportunity.”

Annabelle left South Florida to visit Western Europe during spring break. During her travels she stopped in Ghent. The beautiful port is Belgium’s fourth-largest and most beautiful city, and home to a quarter million people and a blooming floral export trade. Annie brought a little piece of home with her as she posed with Our City Aventura in the city center which many describe as a pedestrian’s architectural museum showcasing its medieval cathedrals and castles.

ASK THE EXPERT
To Be or Not to Be Insured – That is The Question BY DR. MICHAEL JACOBS, DMD
O
ne of the most daunting aspects of going to the dentist (and, yes, we as dentists do realize that there is a laundry list), is trying to decipher the intricate, complicated, sometimes “crazy” world of dental insurance. If you are someone like me, who enjoys doing some advanced investigation of TV shows and movies without a care for spoilers, you know there is a disclaimer on many articles warning of what is to come ahead. Except, this time, I will heed you to read on – before you opt in for your company dental insurance. Or maybe you want to not be insured? Dental insurance boils down to three main categories: HMO, PPO and FFS. Confused? Some of our staff still can’t figure it out! We feel it’s pretty much by design. There are companies (and I would never point a hyperlink mouse finger) that purposely make it super difficult to understand. In simplified terms, HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) is a discount insurance plan. You get discounted fees off the dental offices usual and customary fees. Every HMO insurance plan has different contracted rates with dental offices, which varies based on the size of the HMO company. With this plan, patients must call their insurance company and assign themselves to one particular office. HMO plans are for patients that do not foresee themselves needing dental work any time soon and cost relatively less money than alternatives.

LIGHT & LOVE
Lag BaOmer is a festive day on the Jewish calendar which celebrates the anniversary of the passing of the great sage and mystic Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. It is traditional to light bonfires on Lag BaOmer eve, commemorating the immense light that the Rabbi introduced into the world via his mystical teachings. Children customarily go out into the fields and play with imitation bows and arrows to commemorate the midrashic tradition that no rainbow was seen during Rabbi Shimon’s lifetime. Families at Chabad Chayil had a great time celebrating with a BBQ, S’mores Fire Pit, Bow & Arrow making, and so much more.
NMB HAS A HEART
