QUALIFYING BANKING TRANSACTIONS: • Additional direct deposits • Automatic debits • Point of sale transactions using your BankUnited VISA® Debit Card • Checks posting to and clearing from your account

*A Vertical Rewards Elite Checking Account (the “Account”) is a variable interest rate account. During the first 3 statement cycles following account opening (the “Introductory Period”), the annual percentage yield (”APY”) for daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, may be a maximum of 2.00% APY, provided that a direct deposit via ACH has posted to the Account each statement cycle. If a direct deposit does not post to the Account during a statement cycle during the Introductory Period, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the base interest rate of .50% APY (“Base Interest Rate”) for that statement cycle, and the Account will still be eligible to earn rewards during the next cycle. After the Introductory Period, the APY on daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, in the Account may range from .50% APY to 2.00% APY depending upon (i) a direct deposit via ACH posting to the Account and (ii) the number of qualifying banking services (“Qualifying Services”) performed each statement cycle. If the direct deposit and/or the minimum number of Qualifying Services are not met during a statement cycle, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the Base Interest Rate for that statement cycle. APYs stated herein are accurate as of 6/15/2018. APYs stated herein are established by BankUnited, N.A. (“BankUnited”) in its sole discretion and may change at any time. Balances greater than $250,000 are not eligible to, and will not, earn interest or rewards. Minimum opening deposit is $5,000. Transactions must post and settle to the Account during the applicable statement cycle. Banking services transactions may take one or more business days from the transaction date to post to the Account. A $20 monthly maintenance fee will be assessed if the average balance in the Account falls below $5,000 during a statement cycle. A $15 early closeout fee will be assessed if the Account is closed within 6 months of the account opening date. Fees may reduce earnings. Additional fees, terms and conditions apply. Please refer to our applicable product disclosures, Depositor’s Agreement and Schedule of Fees for additional information. BankUnited reserves the right to cancel or modify this offer at any time without notice. Offer is for new consumer accounts only. Please contact a BankUnited representative for additional details.

espite the soaring temperatures and almost daily deluge of rain, summer is one of the best times to be in South Florida. The snowbirds have all flown home and now those of us who live here can enjoy endless miles of beautiful beaches, easy access to the region’s outstanding restaurants, and a chance to experience all the attractions our community has to offer. After all, there is a reason approximately 30 million tourists visit the tri-county area each year. Get in touch with nature with an airboat ride through the Everglades or charter a boat and go deep sea fishing. Take your taste buds on a journey every Monday night at the Food Trucks at Arts Park in Hollywood or sip and savor a cocktail while watching the sunset at one of the many beachfront bistros. Speaking of the beach, that’s a great place to beat the heat. Pack up the cooler with icy cold drinks and enjoy a day of sand and surf, just don’t forget the sunscreen. Water parks and indoor activity centers are another option for wholesome family fun. Whatever you choose to do this summer, enjoy yourself and stay safe. Remember it is hurricane season. Make sure you have your emergency supplies ready, with at least a three-day supply of food and water for each member of your household.

Hollywood Restaurants are Passionate About Protecting Our Oceans BY BEVERLY PERKINS

P

lastic pollution has had a major impact on our marine ecosystems. Researchers estimate that there are over 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean, and that number continues to rise daily. As a result, sea creatures such as fish, birds, turtles, manatees, and dolphins are all suffering. A great way to combat the global epidemic is to stop the problem at the source, and The Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Restaurant Program (OFR) is a perfect solution. The program offers restaurants a simple way to show their commitment by increasing awareness, changing behavior, and ultimately reducing the plastic footprint left in the environment. It all started with the Surfrider Broward Chapter launching the program locally with one restaurant, then two, and now the ambitious group gained a third. Hollywood’s Ocean Alley Restaurant and Café Club have been active participants, and now the Surfrider Foundation welcomes Billy’s Stone Crab Hollywood to their Ocean Friendly Restaurant Program. “Clean oceans and sustainability help make such

a big difference in our city and sets the right tone for environmentally responsible daily practices,” said Elena Hershey, owner of Billy’s Stone Crab Hollywood. “Every little step in this direction is a huge contribution. We hope that more people and local businesses will see the need to jump on board with Ocean Friendly practices!” Restaurants participating in the OFR Program must abide by the following four criteria: ▸▸ Discontinue offering expanded polystyrene (aka Styrofoam.) ▸▸ Follow proper recycling practices. ▸▸ Only offer reusable tableware for onsite dining and only provide takeout utensils upon request. ▸▸ Eradicate the use of plastic bags for takeout or

to-go orders. ▸▸ They must also choose to abide by at least three of the following criteria: ▸▸ Provide straws only upon request. ▸▸ Eliminate the sale of beverages in plastic bottles. ▸▸ Offer discounts to customers with reusable cups, mugs, bags, etc. ▸▸ Offer vegetarian/vegan food options regularly (All seafood must be a “Best Choice” or “Good Alternative” as defined by Seafood Watch.) ▸▸ Use water conservation efforts such as low-flow faucets and toilets. ▸▸ Use energy efficiency efforts such as LED lighting and Energy Star appliances. “We are thrilled to have Billy’s Stone Crab on board,” said Catherine Uden, Chair of Surfrider Foundation Broward. “Our ocean and our coast are being inundated by plastic pollution. At every one of our local beach cleanups, we collect huge amounts of plastic straws, foam takeout containers, and plastic utensils. The Ocean Friendly Restaurant Program is a way for local restaurants to help reduce their plastic footprint and keep our beaches clean.” For more information about the Ocean Friendly Restaurants program, please visit www.surfrider.org/programs/ocean-friendlyrestaurants or contact Morgan Knowles at ofr@broward.surfrider.org.

or the 6th year, VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital (VCA HAH) and Animal Eye Guys (AEG) of South Florida participated in the “American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) National Service Dog Eye Exam” program. For over a decade, this program has offered free eye exams for pre-registered service animals during the month of May. Since the program launched in 2008, nearly 16,000 service animals have been examined throughout the country. In addition to dogs, other service animals including horses and even a service donkey named Henry have received free sight saving exams. Guardians and handlers of all qualified service animals were invited to VCA Hollywood for the sight-saving eye exam provided by Dr. Robert Swinger, D.V.M., Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist of Animal Eye Guys. VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital opened their doors on a Sunday morning to

88 furry four-legged friends from the Service and Therapy communities. CHAMBER NEWS

We Want YOU to Enroll in the Leadership Hollywood Program

L

eadership Hollywood is the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s premier and most recognized program throughout the county and the State of Florida. The program provides an interactive curriculum where participants can view our community up close, work together and achieve a unique knowledge of resources and services available through our city and county. Leadership Hollywood is an organized course for future leaders. This ninemonth program will start with a kick off on Friday, October 12, 2018 and end in June of 2019 with a graduation ceremony. Leadership Hollywood consists of nine unique program days, each providing an interactive forum

through interface and communication with the current leaders in our community. All activities include maximum class member involvement, participation and role-playing. Class members experience the process that guides them to better comprehend the challenges facing our community. As part of the curriculum class members will learn about the following entities: Health and Human Services, Public Safety, Education, Art & Culture, Environmental Issues, Criminal Justice, Broward County Government, Media, City Government, Business Development and Tourism, and a session devoted to developing personal leadership skills. In addition to learning about the community and leadership, each

class separates into three or four community service teams with the objective of identifying and tackling community issues. As part of the program, each team member will commit to helping complete a team community service project. This project offers an invaluable opportunity for local not-for-profit organizations to harness the potential of a powerful and focused volunteer force with a broad range of expertise to accomplish an important, point-in-time project. If you have the ability to set and achieve goals, make a commitment to the community, and have the potential to impact the area, region or state, Leadership Hollywood is right for you. We are currently recruiting for Leadership Hollywood Class XLIII. For more information on The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, please call 954-923-4000 or visit www. hollywoodchamber.org.

ASK THE EXPERT

Sciatica Nerve Pain BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.

S

ciatica (pronounced sigh-at-eh-kah) is a term used to describe the symptoms of pain such as tingling, numbness, or weakness in the leg. The pain typically begins in the lower back and travels down the buttock and then down the large sciatic nerve in the back of each leg. Although sciatica is not a medical diagnosis, it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Common lower back problems such as a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis often cause sciatica symptoms. Physicians may diagnose a patient with sciatica if they have one or more of the following symptoms: ▸▸ Leg pain that is often described as burning, tingling, or numb ▸▸ Difficulty moving the leg, foot, and/or toes ▸▸ Sharp pain which makes it difficult to stand or walk ▸▸ Constant pain on one side of the buttock or leg ▸▸ Radiating pain down the leg and possibly into the foot

▸▸ Lower back pain Sciatic pain can vary from infrequent and annoying to constant and debilitating. This is usually a result of the location of the pinched nerve which can intensify during sudden movements or changing positions such as moving from a sitting to standing position. The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in the body and is made up of individual nerve roots which start in the lower back. Symptoms occur when the large nerve is compressed or irritated at or near its point of origin. The condition will need to be treated if it is severe with ongoing flare-ups of sciatic nerve pain, so it does not worsen over time. However, nonsurgical treatments in conjunction with certain exercise can relieve the pain most patients experience. These include heat/ice, pain medications such as muscle relaxers, and epidural steroid injections. Some may be temporary fixes and work for some patients but not all. When the pain is severe or does not get better on its own, a more structured treatment approach, and possibly surgery, may be the best option to preventing or minimizing future pain and/or dysfunction for those who cannot get relief otherwise.

It’s best to share all your symptoms with your physician so the best approach can be made to design a treatment program. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 340, Aventura, 33180. To schedule an appointment, please call (305)932-1660.

Off the Canvas was Off the Charts! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

lmost a decade ago, Alissa Alfonso created Off the Canvas as a vehicle to expose children to arts and crafts. Motivated by arts and crafts as a child herself, the local artist and Hollywood resident wants the young ones in her community to experience the same joy she does with art as a part of life. “Art is all around us, from the clothes you wear, to the building you stand in, to the dish you eat from,” said curator Alissa Alfonso. “The importance of learning to appreciate art early in life is often overlooked and undervalued. It encourages exploration, self-expression, logical thinking, selfesteem, individuality, imagination and creativity. Art teaches children to think openly, create new meaning, be more tolerant of uniqueness, and gives them the self-confidence to take risks.” The purpose of Off the Canvas is to cultivate a sustained awareness and interest in arts/crafts by exposing children to a variety of artists, craft people, and mediums. The program is run entirely by volunteers who share the same passion as Alfonso. Once a month, these volunteers present a various display of arts and crafts to the classes at Beachside Montessori Village (BMV). They utilize vehicles such as books, posters, laptops, and/or

the Promethean board. After the presentation, the volunteers supply a hands-on art or craft project to correspond with what they taught and to enforce the lesson learned. Over 700 students in Pre-K though the 8th grade participated in the yearly program at the school. In May, the end of the year concluded with the 8th annual Off the Canvas Live!, a fully interactive evening of the arts which showcased the art/ crafts projects the students created throughout the year in an exhibit open to all BMV families, school administrators, and media. Guests got to view creative art pieces such as a pantyhose wire sculpture, 3D dot paintings, a 5ft tall recycled water bottle chandelier, nature inspired art, and much recycled and re-used material art - which is an important theme in the program. They also got to visit the 1973 Squatter Pop Up mobile art gallery and see Jenny Larsson’s video installation. “Another year of Off the Canvas Live! is done. So much work and planning over in a blink of the eye, but so happy to be exposing kids to non-traditional arts and working with other passionate creatives. It was truly a wonderful night of the arts,” added Alfonso.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Buckle Up: Seat Belt Safety BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM

Pest Control & Termite Professionals No-TeNT TermiTe TreaTmeNT

T

housands of people still die because they did not buckle up. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA)Exchange, nearly 33,000 people are killed in crashes and accidents each year. Wearing a seat belt can help reduce this number. Based on Isaac Newton’s first law of motion known as the Law of Inertia, “an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion (at a constant velocity) unless acted upon by an external force.” The Law of Inertia applies to the occupants of a vehicle. Bodies are traveling at the same speed as the vehicle even though they are just sitting. If the vehicle stops abruptly, whether it is a hard stop or an automobile accident, their body will continue moving forward, something must stop that motion and airbags usually are not enough. Seat belts prevent excessive injury when the vehicle and the body need to slow down in a hurry. This applies whether the occupants are in the driver seat, passenger seat or in the backseat. According to Angela Osterhuber, Director of the Pennsylvania Traffic Injury in Media, seat belts prevent occupants of the vehicle from serious injuries in five (5) ways: ▸▸ A seat belt keeps the occupants of the vehicle inside: “It is a myth that people are better off being thrown clear from the crash. People thrown from a vehicle are four times more likely to be killed than those who remain inside.” ▸▸ A seat belt restrains the strongest parts of the body: “Restraints are designed to contact the body at its strongest parts. For an older child or adult, these parts are the hips and shoulders, which is where the seat belt should be strapped.” ▸▸ A seat belt spreads out any force from the collision: “Lap-and-shoulder belts spread the force of the crash over a wide area of the body. By putting less stress on any one area, they can help avoid serious injury. A shoulder strap also helps keep the head and upper body away from the dashboard, steering wheel, and other hard interior parts of the automobile should one suddenly stop or hit another vehicle.” ▸▸ A seat belt helps the body to slow down: “What is it that causes injury? A quick change in speed. Seat belts help extend the time it takes for one to slow down in a crash.” ▸▸ A seat belt protects the brain and spinal cord: “A seat belt is designed to protect these two critical areas. Head injuries may be hard to see immediately, but they are deadly. Likewise, spinal cord injuries can have serious consequences.” Safety devices are very important in our everyday life. Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. Being buckled up during a crash helps keep you safe and secure inside of your vehicle. Air bags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them. It takes only a few seconds to snap in your seat belt once you get in the car. Buckling your seat belt should be a habit. Buckle Up and be Safe!

ASK THE EXPERT

Protect Yourself from the Sun BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A

s the summer sun heats up in South Florida, it’s important to protect your skin as much as possible. The harmful UVA and UVB rays from sun exposure accelerate the aging process in the skin resulting in hyperpigmentation, increased wrinkles, and most importantly, increased incidence of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer with more cases diagnosed each year in the United States than all other cancers combined. There are some misconceptions regarding sun expo-

sure and skin cancer. ▸▸ You can’t get a sunburn on a cloudy day. Clouds only block some of the harmful ultraviolet rays, so a sunburn is still possible. ▸▸ You can’t get skin cancer where the sun doesn’t shine. Skin cancer can appear anywhere on the body, including the hands and feet. ▸▸ Skin cancer only affects light-skinned people. Those who are fair, are at increased risk, but anyone can get skin cancer. ▸▸ Using a tanning bed occasionally is safe. The United States Department of Health and Human Services and World Health Organization have classified a tanning bed as a carcinogen and research suggests that even one session may increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Some sun exposure is essential to Vitamin D metabolism; however, excessive exposure or unprotected exposure can be very harmful. Sunscreen is the obvious first step in protecting your skin. Broad spectrum is best. The FDA requires sunscreen manufacturers to prove that sunscreens protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are the primary cause of sunburn as well as Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which can cause premature aging of the skin. Both types of rays have been associated with the development of skin cancer. Choose SPF, or sun protective factor, of 15 or greater. Sunscreen must be applied in adequate amounts to achieve the SPF rating on the label. The recommended amount is 2 mg./ cm² – roughly 1 shot glass or 2 tablespoons worth of sunscreen for face and body. Patients who are concerned about obtaining enough sun exposure to make Vitamin D should be aware that current research indicates that 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure to the mid-day sun, 3 times a week is sufficient to synthesize enough Vitamin D to meet our body’s needs. Additionally, remember to protect lips, wear sunglasses with UV protection and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Finally, it is important to get your skin checked periodically by a board-certified physician. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and has achieved the award Black Diamond with Allergan. As a Black Diamond Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Messa is in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. eaders of Our City Hollywood magazine, I hope that your family is enjoying the summer. If you have kids, you may have already found your summer camp of choice. If you haven’t though, or if you are interested in learning about additional options, here’s some information to make sure you know about the summer camps that the City of Hollywood operates. First, for those kids who like the outdoors and nature, Hollywood’s popular Science, Education and Adventure (S.E.A.) Camp is a great choice. S.E.A. Camp operates out of the Hollywood Beach Culture & Community Center. It offers “a classroom without walls” focused on marine life and natural sciences. Campers will explore our beach areas, marshes, and other natural areas of interest, learning about fascinating creatures, natural habitats, our oceanographic ecosystems and environmental issues. If your children are interested in applied sciences, technologies, engineering, arts and math, the Department of Park, Recreation and Cultural Arts’ STEM Camp at South Broward High School and STEAM Camp with WTU Enrichment at Oaklake Community Center, are great choices. These are week-long camps that include instruction and activity on a wide range of activities, such as video game design, computer graphics and animation to LEGO robotics and chess. For a fun, supervised environment focused on improving academic performance, providing social skills development, daily physical fitness, and teaching team building through community- based projects, the Maximize Out of School Time (M.O.S.T.) camps at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Washington Park Community Centers, are great choices. At Driftwood and David Park Community Centers, camps operated by Sunshine Child Programs include field trips, indoor and outdoor fun and games, arts & crafts, and special performances and events that go on all summer long. For children ages 8 to 17 who want to learn all about ocean and beach safety, check out the Beach Junior Lifeguard Program, where campers will learn lifesaving techniques; rescue board and ocean kayak skills, ecology, first aid and have a chance to compete in ocean lifeguard events. In addition to these summer camps, the City of Hollywood also offers Swimming Lessons at Driftwood Community Pool - for children ages 6 months and up. A variety of sessions are scheduled for the busy family, with courses of all skill levels offered in the morning, evenings and weekends. For more information on swim lessons, please visit www.hollywoodfl.org/swim. For more information on the City of Hollywood summer programs and more, visit www.hollywoodfl.org/summercamps, or call 954-921-3404. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Symptoms Symptoms vary with each individual depending on the location and the type of disc degeneration. However, a primary symptom of the disease includes sharp and/or chronic pain in the back and neck. Other signs are weakness or numbness. As a disc undergoes change, the body may react and develop bone spurs as well. These bony growths may take up space, therefore compressing the nerves, and causing weakness in the arms and/or legs.

Tests If a patient presents any of the above symptoms, their doctor may order X-rays, an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), or a CT (Computed Tomography) scan.

Treatment The severity of the condition will determine the best approach for treatment before considering surgery. Nonoperative measures may include: heat and/or ice therapy, activity modification, medications, physical therapy to strengthen the muscles, and epidural injections. These measures are often effective in providing pain relief. Surgery, such as a discectomy, may be required for those patients not responding to any of the nonoperative measures, whose disc changes have resulted in spinal cord compression, who have a structural abnormality, or those who have such severe chronic pain. The procedure removes the disc and any associated bone spurs which are compressing the spinal cord and/or surrounding nerves. The removal makes room for the spinal cord and nerves to move freely again, and the pressure is relieved. Felix M. Ramirez, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Pembroke Pines/Hollywood area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 2301 N. University Drive, Suite 204, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 447-0577.
