It’s Time to Go Back to School

I

t is hard to believe that the summer is already coming to an end. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 21st is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well: neighborhood school, charter school, private school or virtual school. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Aventura is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area, in addition to almost every after-school activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it.

s the school year came to a close, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts honored its volunteers who donate their time to one of the largest arts-in-education programs in the United States, which serves more than 150,000 students annually. Fort Lauderdale resident Thomas Holt was named “Education Volunteer of the Year” in appreciation of his exemplary merit and volunteering for the Broward Center. “Thomas works wonderfully with children and his heart and soul is really dedicated to Student Enrichment through the Arts (SEAS),” said Broward Center SEAS Director George Longobardi. “He is always willing to do what is necessary to help the program succeed.” Aventura residents, Sally Knispel and Linda Lee were also recognized for their dedication and volunteer work. Lee has been a volunteer at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center for 6 years and Knispel for over 4 years now. Lee enjoys it so much that she also volunteers for the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami. “I choose to volunteer at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center to give back to the community,” said Linda Lee. “I’m a fan of the arts and I enjoy working with children by bringing arts to their lives. It is so satisfying to seeing the kids’ faces light when they see the theater for the first time. I get excited for them. Many of these kids don’t have access to live theater so using the Smart Stage Matinee program

to bring to them to the theater is just wonderful.” “When you see the children so excited and happy it’s a great feeling, and they learn a lot,” added Knispel. “I happen to be a people person so I enjoy giving myself to people. The children are our most delightful people.” Many of the programs are presented in partnership with Broward County Public Schools. Among those attending the Sally Knispel and Linda Lee of Aventura luncheon to thank the volunteers were School Board members Laurie Rich Levinson, Chief School Performance and Accountability Officer Dr. Valerie Wanza, Director of Elementary Education Dr. Nicole Mancini and Director of Activities and Sports Shawn Cerra. In another collaboration with Broward County Public Schools, students from the culinary arts department of McFatter Technical College prepared and served the food for the 110 volunteers and guests who attended the luncheon held in the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom at the Broward Center. Eleven year old student Arianna Pereira, who attends classes at the Rose Miniaci Education Center, performed for the guests. Volunteering for the Broward Center’s programs for school children is perfect for retired educators and parents who want to remain involved in shaping students’ lives. For more information about becoming a volunteer, contact the volunteer office 954-468-2684 or e-mail volunteer@browardcenter.org.

ichael Schulson, celebrity chef and restaurateur, recently added another restaurant to expand his Schulson Collective portfolio. Schulson’s restaurants span the northern east coast in Philadelphia and New Jersey, but his latest creation is right here in Hollywood at The Diplomat Beach Resort. At the south end of the massive lobby behind the impressive dark wood doors is South Florida’s newest gem, Monkitail. The restaurant recently opened in late spring and serves modern Japanese cuisine. The ambiance in the private main dining area overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is like no other. The leather tufted seating, dark walls, exposed wood beams, and lantern style lighting make for a perfect special occasion dining experience. Surrounding an open robatayaki kitchen in the heart of the restaurant is a 15-seat sushi bar for those looking for a more casual dining option. Tucked away beyond the main dining room is Nokku, a discreet cocktail lounge with four private rooms, each having full karaoke capabilities. Tunes, cocktails and signature dishes are offered late into the night. The space is great for private parties and events, or just after-hours fun until 2:00am. Schulson’s menu is a contemporary take on the classic izakaya, featuring sharable small plates and sushi as well as an extensive list of specialty cocktails, wines and saké. His imagination and vision have made him one of Philadelphia’s most successful hospitality professionals, and he brings that creative flair to Hollywood with Monkitail. Guests may start their dining experience with appetizers such as Octopus Sunomono, Toro Caviar, or Wasabi Ceviche, as well as creative libations like the The Monkitail (bourbon, rye, vermouth, and barrel stowe smoke) or The Monki’s Fist which combines saké with

Celebrity Chef Brings Modern Japanese Fare to Hollywood coconut and pineapple. The selection covers it all on the Robatayaki menu. This method of “fireside-cooking” is similar to barbeque, where items on skewers are slow-grilled over hot charcoal. From vegetables to seafood, poultry, pork, Kobe beef and game, there is a taste for every palette.

“As a student of Asian cuisine, I have always emphasized flavor over fat, and I’m proud to bring that approach to other culinary styles, as well.” MICHAEL SCHULSON

The variety of sushi and sashimi, and hand-created rolls are a sushi-lover’s dream. Specialty sashimi has unique choices such as Salmon Tataki which is made with endives, asparagus, dill and honey Dijon. The side items are also not to be missed; Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Bacon Yakisoba or the Black Cod Fried Rice complement each dish. “To be able to add a restaurant like Monkitail to an iconic hotel in South Florida was a very exciting venture for me,” said Shulson. “Hollywood seemed to really be starving for a sushi concept that focuses on sushi, robatayaki and the type of experience we provide at Monkitail.” Schulson attended and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, working his way up the culinary chain of command in such acclaimed restaurants as New York’s Peacock Alley at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and David Burke’s Park Avenue Café, and Philadelphia’s Le Bec-Fin and Susanna Foo. Before setting out on his own, Schulson helmed legendary kitchens in New York City (Buddakan) and Philadelphia (Pod) and traveled to Japan. He eventually earned the ability to speak conversational Japanese following his stints in prestigious Tokyo kitchens, among them Spago and the Four Seasons Hotel.

Today, Schulson is the owner of day-to-night destination Double Knot; the expansive Independence Beer Garden; Sampan and the adjacent Graffiti Bar; and serves as chef-partner at Izakaya at Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, N.J. Schulson recently opened new-American spot Harp & Crown in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square, and now Monkitail in Hollywood, Florida. Monkitail is located within The Diplomat Beach Resort - 3555 S. Ocean Drive, Hollywood, 33019. Complimentary Valet parking provided. Open for dinner Wed.–Thurs. 6pm-11pm, Fri. - Sat. 6pm-12am and Sun. – 6pm11pm. Nokku Thurs. – Saturday 9pm-2am. North Miami Beach Developers Awarded Key to the City COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he City of North Miami Beach presented the Key to the City to the developers of Marina Palms Yacht Club & Residences for turning an abandoned and dilapidated marina and restaurant into a 468-residence luxury waterfront condominium development. Neil Fairman and George Helmstetter of Plaza Equity Partners were recognized at the North Miami Beach City Commission meeting on April 19 for bringing an environmentally friendly project to the site and essentially putting the city back on the map. Marina Palms is the first condominium and private yacht club to be developed in more than two decades in Miami-Dade County. “When Neil Fairman walked into my office in 2012, I was probably a little bit skeptical,” said North Miami Beach Mayor George Vallejo. “Many people come in with so many grand ideas that never come to fruition. But four years ago, the commission said yes to this one.” Mayor Vallejo went on to say that the Marina Palms project was in fact a turning point for North Miami Beach. “What was once an isolated, commercial marina has turned a gorgeous development that also happens to produce revenues to our city in excess of a boost of more than

25 percent of the city’s property tax base, which is outstanding,” added Vallejo. “Our friends at Marina Palms have not only helped us bring in new residents, but new resources to provide benefits to the entire city, including police, parks and water safety.” “It’s an honor to be standing here and really humbling,” said Neil Fairman, Chairman of Plaza Equity Partners. “When we first came here the project was in great doubt. Without the leadership of the mayor and the city council, I don’t think we would have been able to get this project done.” Just over a month ago, Marina Palms Yacht Club & Residences celebrated the grand opening of its second and most luxurious tower, the Reserve. The Reserve at Marina Palms is located on its own peninsula and consists of 234 residences in 25 stories offering spacious 2- and3- bedroom layouts with expansive views over the 112-slip marina, adjacent nature preserve, Miami skyline and the Atlantic Ocean. Prices for the remaining residences start from $950,000 with penthouses from $1.2 million.

lorida League of Cities honored North Miami Beach officials with the 2017 Home Rule Hero Award during the 2017 legislative session in late June. Mayor George Vallejo and Commissioner Anthony F. DeFillipo were recognized for their outstanding advocacy efforts. In 1922, the League was founded on the belief that local self-government is the keystone of American democracy. The Home Rule Hero Award was created by the League’s legislative team to recognize and thank those individuals who make an extraordinary effort in their cities. The award winners are the municipal officials who stand out for their high level of

participation and effectiveness. Since its inception in 2009, hundreds have been awarded for their efforts. Mayor Vallejo and Commissioner DeFillipo each earned this prestigious award for their tireless efforts to advance the League’s legislative agenda and help protect the Home Rule powers of Florida’s cities during the 2017 regular legislative session. The Florida League of Cities is the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments. Florida’s cities are formed by their citizens and governed by their citizens. Home Rule is the ability for a city to establish its own form of government and enact ordinances, codes, plans and resolutions without prior state of approval. Local government officials, both elected and nonelected, who consistently respond to the League’s request to reach out to members of the legislature and offer their local perspective of an issue are able to be recipients of the award. Home Rule Hero allows those who know their cities best to be involved. City officials who actively participate help the League’s legislative team understand how their

decisions impact their communities. Furthermore, they are able to assist, guide, and be the voice for their local government. “Our Home Rule Heroes are shining examples of local advocacy in action,” said Boca Raton Mayor and Florida League of Cities President Susan Haynie. “These dedicated municipal officials take time out of their busy schedules to cultivate relationships with their legislators and help them understand the issues that are most important to their constituents back home. Thank you for all you do to help protect Home Rule and preserve the quality of life in your city.”

Oh Baby, The Places They’ll Go…Scheck Hillel Class of 2017

SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he 2016-2017 school year came to an exciting close with Scheck Hillel Community School’s Class of 2017 commencement ceremony. Approximately 1,400 friends and family gathered in the school’s Diener Athletic Center to celebrate the success of the 81 graduates. With more than 200 college acceptances, each graduate found the best program for their next step in life. All will be attending amazing universities, yeshivot and gap year programs across the globe, including Cornell, Emory, Georgia Tech, University of Florida, IDC Herzliya, University of Michigan, New York University, Tufts and more. “Seniors, may you find success, fulfillment and happiness, and may you always remember that Hillel is home,” said Scheck Hillel Head of School Dr. Ezra

Levy. “You are our newest generation of alumni. With so many friends gathered to honor you today, I give a special thank you to our hundreds of alumni. With more alumni than ever before returning home as parents and faculty, we continue to grow, while preserving the essence and traditions of our school. Thank you for keeping Scheck Hillel a constant part of your lives.” Carlos Berner, Scheck Hillel’s Chair of the Board of Governors, followed Dr. Levy by giving the graduates a lifelong message. “May you grow to become mensches, lifelong learners, creative and productive global citizens who advocate for good, agents of change, people who will go out of their way to help others, voices that will stand up for justice, tireless advocates of the State of Israel and proud members of the Jewish People.” Valedictorian Jordana Zackon shared her thoughts, “We are about to enter a whole new world with a diverse array of people, housing a diverse array of thought. This gives us the opportunity to learn and to grow, to make us question our preconceived notions, and even to strengthen our beliefs.” Salutatorian Danielle Scheck also spoke, “We had quite the experience here at Scheck Hillel, which has transformed us into who we are today: inquisitive and ambitious leaders. Most importantly, we are determined to make

FEATURE STORY

The HOME Stretch - Hollywood’s Newest Luxury Waterfront Community is Nearing Completion BY BEVERLY PERKINS

H

ollywood’s newest waterfront condominium is nearing completion and buyers are looking forward to the beachside life style this luxury-low rise community will afford. Located on A1A on Hollywood’s beautiful North Beach, Seaside Village features 15 luxury condominium units and eight single family homes. For the past 18 months, the developers have been hard at work, changing the face of this less traveled portion of Hollywood Beach. The modern design of the waterfront buildings are bringing a fresh new look to the area. Residents will enjoy a waterfront pool and lounge, a private marina and a unique beach lifestyle with easy access to all of the fun and excitement that South Florida has to offer. Roger Lohse, with Keller Williams Realty Professionals, is the listing agent for the development, and he took the time to answer some questions about this boutique community.

Who are your buyers? So far, most of our buyers are locals who have decided it’s time to sell their big homes and move to the beach. We’re also getting lots of interest from high-rise residents in Sunny Isles and Aventura. These are people who still enjoy maintenance-free condo living but are longing to live in a smaller community. Tell us about the marina. Our marina has a total of 12 slips as an additional purchase… and there are only three left! A 45 foot slip costs $150,000 and a 55 foot slip is priced at $200,000. You’ll pay more than twice that amount at some of the new condos being built on the water in Fort Lauderdale. It’s important to note that we’re the closest residential development south of Port Everglades. You can have your boat in the ocean in 15 minutes.

When is construction due to be completed? The first condominium building is scheduled to be finished in the early Fall. We will have our model open in the beginning of September. When is the sales center open? The sales center, located at 6024 N. Ocean Drive, Hollywood, FL. 33019, is open every day from 10am-5pm. What is your contact information? We can be reached at 954-261-2727. Seaside Village – 6024 N. Ocean Drive, Hollywood, FL. 33019 www.SeasideVillageNorthBeach.com

What makes Seaside Village so unique? There are very few places in South Florida where you can live directly on the Intracoastal and be so close to the beach. The property is literally 600 feet away from the ocean. This is also the last waterfront community to be built on north Hollywood beach. What are the prices of the luxury residences at Seaside Village? Price per square foot, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better deal for waterfront new construction in South Florida. Our 3 bed/3.5 bath condo units range from $1.25m-$1.4m. We also have three penthouses priced at $2.3m. The single family homes feature 4000 square feet under air, a rooftop terrace and spa, elevators, and a two car garage. They start at $1.875m. By the way, our prices include all of your flooring, cabinets, countertops and high-end appliances. We’re using Sub-Zero/Wolfe appliances, Cesar Stone countertops and Italian Porcelain tile flooring.

ACES Has Some Girls on the Run

SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

t may be hard to keep up with these third through eighth grade girls from Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES). Between their studies and extracurricular activities, they still found the time to be a part of the after-school program, Girls on the Run® (GOTR). Besides running, the GOTR curriculum provides lessons that encourage positive emotional, social, mental, and physical development while also teaching the value of helping others in the community. The lessons were taught by ACES teachers Mrs. Alvarez-Harris, Ms. Chiavari, and Ms. Menasche who are certified Girls on the Run® volunteer coaches. Throughout the season, the girls developed strong friendships, built confidence, and celebrated all that make each one of them unique. They explored and discussed their own beliefs around experiences and

challenges girls face at this age. They also had the opportunity to develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate through these life experiences. As part of the program the ACES GOTR team planned and executed a local community service project which taught the girls the value of helping those less fortunate. They made handmade “Get Well” cards for female patients of their same age at the Holtz Children’s Hospital. Additionally, they were able to create a piece of jewelry at the Kendra Scott Boutique in the Brickell Citi Center Mall, a GOTR partner, to include with their well wishes. Finally, physical activity was woven into the program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. At the end of the season, the girls participated in a 5K event. The celebratory, non-competitive event was the culminating experience of the curriculum. “Completing the 5k gave the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes

through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals,” said ACES second grade teacher and GOTR coach Alvarez-Harris. The 3rd Annual Krista-Marie Touch of Love Charity 5K took place in early April at C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines to raise funds for autism. The girls were accompanied by their coaches, running buddies, and families that day. After 3 months of training, the girls were able to set, achieve, and surpass their personal running goals. “Crossing the finish line was truly a defining moment! ACES is incredibly proud of this group of girls for making the seemingly impossible, possible!” added Alvarez-Harris. “It is our hope to grow this program at ACES in the future. We would love to have more than one team and offer the program to more girls!”

AMC Invites the Entire City to Come Walk with Us to Protect Childhood

C

hildhood should be a time of wonder and excitement – a time to learn and grow. Sadly, not all children get to experience the carefree joy of childhood. We know that child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education. And, 90% of the time a child is Photo credit: Omar Vega being harmed, it’s at the hands of someone they – and their parents – know, love and trust. ▸▸ 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will become victims of child sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. ▸▸ 1 in 5 children are solicited sexually through the Internet before the age of 18. ▸▸ More than 90% of individuals with a developmental delay or disability will be sexually assaulted at least once in their lifetime. The stats are staggering, but the solution is clear: 95 percent of child sexual abuse IS preventable through education and awareness. That’s why Lauren Book, Founder and CEO of the Aventura-based nonprofit Lauren’s Kids (www.laurenskids.org), has laced up her sneakers each and every year since 2010 to walk 1,500 miles across the state of Florida – to educate communities, raise awareness, and empower survivors. Her iconic “Walk in My Shoes” has become a piece of Florida history, beginning each year at the Southernmost Point of the U.S. in Key West, traveling north and hitting both coasts of the state before ending at the steps of the Historic Florida Capitol in Tallahassee. The South Florida leg of the “Walk in My Shoes” is perhaps one of the most exciting,

engaging and fun – with cameos by Miami HEAT and Miami Dolphins players and coaches, elected officials, and thousands of individuals and families coming together to walk in honor of this important cause. What began as one Aventura woman’s personal mission to create change for children has truly become a movement embraced by communities across the state. But as much as Lauren and Lauren’s Kids have done and as far as we’ve come, there is still much left to do in the fight for a safer Florida…and a safer Aventura. chool days bring congestion and safety concerns. It is worth remembering that by exercising a little extra caution and care, drivers and pedestrians can share the road safely in the school zones. According to the National Safe Routes to School Program, more children are hit by cars near schools than at any other location.

▸▸ Children should always board and exit the bus at locations that provide safe access to the bus or to the school building. ▸▸ Remind your child to wait for the bus to stop before approaching it from the curb. Make sure your child walks where he or she can see the bus driver. Remind your child to look both ways to see that no other traffic is coming before crossing the street. If your child’s school bus has lap/shoulder seat belts, make sure your child uses one at all times when in the bus. Check on the school’s policies regarding food on the bus. If your child has a chronic condition that could result in an emergency on the bus, make sure you discuss it with the school nurse.

CAR

▸▸ All passengers should wear a seat belt and/or an age-and-size-appropriate car seat or booster seat. ▸▸ Your child should ride in a car seat with a harness as long as possible and then ride in a belt-positioning booster seat. ▸▸ All children younger than 13 years of age should ride in the rear seat of vehicles. ▸▸ Remember that many crashes occur while novice teen drivers are going to and from school. Parents should require seat belts use, limit the number of teen passengers, and do not allow eating, drinking, cell phone conversations, texting or other mobile device use to prevent driver distraction. Limit nighttime driving and driving in inclement weather. ▸▸ Know the “rules of the road”.

BIKE

▸▸ Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride. ▸▸ Ride on the right, in the same direction as auto traffic and ride in the bikes lanes if they are present. ▸▸ Use appropriate hand signals. ▸▸ Respect the traffic lights and stop signs. ▸▸ Wear bright –colored clothing to increase visibility. ▸▸ Make sure your child’s walk to school is a safe route with well-trained adult crossing guards at every intersection. ▸▸ Identify other children in the neighborhood with whom your child can walk to school. In neighborhoods with higher levels of traffic, consider organizing a “walking school bus”, where an adult accompanies a group of neighborhood children walking to school. ▸▸ Be realistic about your child’s pedestrian skills. ▸▸ If your children are young or are walking to a new school, walk with them. ASK THE EXPERT

U

nfortunately, one of the most common areas of pain is in the lower back. The lumbar spine, also known as the low back, interconnects the bones, joints, nerves, ligaments, and muscles. The structure works together to provide support, strength, and flexibility. But, because this structure is so complex, it leaves the low back susceptible to injury and pain. Furthermore, the region supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday actions such as bending and twisting. Lower back muscles are also responsible for flexing and rotating hips while walking, as well as being support for the spinal column. The nerves in the low back supply sensation and give power to the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet. Usually mechanical issues and soft-tissue injuries are the cause of low back pain. These types of injuries can include damage to the intervertebral discs, compression of nerve roots, and improper movement of the spinal joints. But the most common cause is typically a torn or pulled muscle and/or ligament. A variety of symptoms may occur when lower back pain is evident. They may be mild or severely debilitating. They may develop slowly over time or just come on suddenly. The symptoms are also a result of the underlying cause of the pain. The time course of the pain will also help determine the cause. The body will also react to the injury by mobilizing an inflammatory healing response which in turn presents more pain. A muscle may be strained if it is stretched too far and tears. Therefore, damaging the muscle itself. It may be sprained when over-stretching and tearing affects the ligaments which connect the bones together. However, regardless if the muscle or ligament is damaged, the symptoms and treatment are the same. It’s advised to speak to a physician if the following symptoms are occurring: ▸▸ Achy, dull pain is present in the low back ▸▸ Numbness or tingling (sciatica), perhaps even stinging or burning pain moves from the low back down to the back of thighs, and into the lower legs and feet ▸▸ Tightness in the low back, pelvis, and hips along with muscle spasms ▸▸ Pain worsens after prolonged sitting or standing ▸▸ Difficulty changing positions from standing to sitting and vice-versa

“Max” PET OF THE MONTH

Attention: VIAGRA & CIALIS Users

Max recently celebrated his 7th birthday. The adorable Maltese adores his human mommy, Ivette. He likes snacking on carrots and feeling the wind in his face when he rides in the car down Biscayne Boulevard. However, he strongly dislikes cell phone text message alerts. His favorite thing to do is escape into the hallway of his Aventura highrise and sprint up and down the corridor. He was last seen napping on his favorite human’s lap.

SNAPSHOTS FROM CAMP

HAPPY CAMPERS

Camp Sol Taplin at The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center was the perfect place for children ages 2-15 to try a variety of activities this summer. Besides participating in traditional camp sports, swimming, tennis, arts & crafts, and such, campers were able to experience and partake in Circus Camp, Robotics, Shabbat, and so much more. Regardless of religious backgrounds or language spoken, happy faces are a sure sign of happy campers! It’s been a great summer at Camp Sol Taplin.

The theme this summer, “Build a Better World”, had children learning problem solving skills through coding, robotics, Lego design, environmental and cultural awareness, claymation animation and increasing reading comprehension and math skills all in an effort to improve individual lives and the world.

Kids loved the City of North Miami Beach Parks and R.E.C. Department’s summer programs.
