*A Vertical Rewards Elite Checking Account (the “Account”) is a variable interest rate account. During the first 3 statement cycles following account opening (the “Introductory Period”), the annual percentage yield (”APY”) for daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, may be a maximum of 2.00% APY, provided that a direct deposit via ACH has posted to the Account each statement cycle. If a direct deposit does not post to the Account during a statement cycle during the Introductory Period, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the base interest rate of .50% APY (“Base Interest Rate”) for that statement cycle, and the Account will still be eligible to earn rewards during the next cycle. After the Introductory Period, the APY on daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, in the Account may range from .50% APY to 2.00% APY depending upon (i) a direct deposit via ACH posting to the Account and (ii) the number of qualifying banking services (“Qualifying Services”) performed each statement cycle. It’s Time to Go Back to School

S

ummer is coming to an end even earlier this year! August 15th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. So, for parents, that means it is time to stock up on school supplies, help your child pick out that lucky lunch box, and remind him or her to finish their summer reading list.

It’s also time to register for after school enrichment programs. There are a myriad of different activities and opportunities, with everything from sports to music and everything in between.

to provide parents with a useful guide to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year. In the meantime, enjoy the last couple weeks of summer break. We’ll be back to school before you know it. Sincerely,

Christy and Terry Jaillet Christy & Terry Jaillet Publishers

Parents also have choices in how their kids are educated. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, a parent must now decide between enrolling their child at their local school, charter school, private school or online learning. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational and enrichment programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to language lessons to Little League. The material has been curated

Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals

will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

Petland Florida Keeps Hope Alive for Those with Hunter Syndrome BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S

adly, a progressively debilitating, life-limiting disease is affecting approximately 500 boys in the United States and less than 2,000 worldwide. The rare genetic disease called Hunter Syndrome occurs almost exclusively in males, and three of these boys live right here in South Florida. Not many have even heard of the illness, but fortunately, Petland Florida has partnered with Project Alive. The non-profit corporation is on a mission to cure Hunter Syndrome / Mucopolysaccharidosis II through research and advocacy and Petland Florida wants to help create awareness and raise funds for the muchneeded cause. For over a decade the neighborhood pet store has been an integral part of their local communities by participating in charitable convictions and getting involved to create awareness for such important causes such as Project Alive. With locations in Pembroke Pines, Davie, Plantation, Kendall, and soon Tampa, Petland Florida hopes to raise $20,000 each month to dedicate solely to the 501 (c) (3) organization. Project Alive has become a powerful voice for children and adults with Hunter Syndrome by bringing together families and advocates with researchers, industry, and regulators. The funds raised promise to increase research, assist researchers in the community, and advocate for the most effective and efficient system of clinical research, evaluation, and approval. Because of its grassroots efforts and innovative campaigns, the dedicated group has made significant advances in public awareness for Hunter Syndrome and its symptoms, the need for early diagnosis, and the treatments and clinical trials available. Luis Marquez, President of Petland Florida, recently took the time to answer some questions about his company’s involvement with Project Alive. Why did you decide to dedicate so much time and effort to the Project Alive? As a father to young children, I just could not imagine not seeing them grow up. I immediately felt connected when learning about the organization and I wanted to do something to help. More Than 200 Supporters Ran to the Inaugural Deltas on the Run Event BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

t was a win-winwin for the South Broward Alumnae Chapter (SBAC) Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., the Lupus Foundation of America Florida Chapter, Inc., and the March of Dimes last May. The SBAC hosted “Deltas on the Run 5K” at Hollywood Beach’s Charnow Park. The inaugural event celebrated the sorority’s 105th anniversary and created awareness and raised funds for lupus prevention and the prevention of preterm babies while promoting physical and mental health. Supa Cindy of 99 JAMZ, also a lupus survivor, served as the 5K Mistress of Ceremony and Grand Marshall. Approximately 1.5 million Americans have a form of lupus, an autoimmune disease in which the

immune system attacks its tissues causing inflammation, swelling, and pain. Another staggering fact is that nearly 4 million babies are born premature annually in the United States which is the leading cause of death. The eager group was hoping to register 200 participants. However, they exceeded their goal by registering 275, an exceptional number for a “first-time” event. Additionally, they surpassed their fundraising goal by securing $11,000 in sponsorships and raising over $12,000. “The project brought much needed awareness to lupus and the prevention of preterm births. We had the opportunity to share information regarding both initiatives,” said Trameka Wade, Physical and Mental Health Chair, South Broward Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “We also chose March of Dimes because it’s not only a National Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. initiative, but the majority of premature babies are born to minority women.” Besides accomplishing those goals, the hosts were proud to getting the local chapter and the community moving. Prior to the event, fitness opportunities such as weekly walks, healthy eating seminars, boot camps, and yoga sessions were available to participants. The chapter strives to continually raise awareness about

Physical & Mental Health Committee Co-Chairs Tamika Wade and Cherise Gause with Supa Cindy from 99 JAMZ (center)

the importance and benefits of a healthy lifestyle by developing health-focused programs within the community. “We received an overwhelming response regarding our efforts to shed light on lupus awareness, because very little attention is focused on this mysterious disease. It also encouraged participants to adopt a healthier lifestyle and to get physically fit. Most importantly, it allowed the chapter an opportunity to connect with the community,” added Wade. “We will continue to raise funds throughout the sororal year. All of the physical and mental health events that we host go towards supporting our Delta’s on the Run 5K, which in turn helps to raise funds for the Lupus Foundation and March of Dimes. Service is what we do!” Proceeds from the event will fund programs for the lupus and March of Dimes organizations as well as support SBAC’s community projects and annual scholarships to assist high school seniors attending college.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, ne needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

n honor of National Pet Month, the Hollywood-based law firm of Kramer, Green, Zuckerman, Greene and Buchsbaum, P.A. recently hosted an adoption and pet supply collection event for the Humane Society of Broward County. This effort was part of the “Snuggle Delivery” program which brings puppies and kittens to businesses in the tri-county area for several hours of “snuggle time” with employees in exchange for a donation of $500 or more. Besides the obvious mission to get homeless animals adopted, the program aims to also relieve stress in the workplace. “Our Snuggle Delivery program has been a huge

From Sea to Shining Sea - Ocean Lovers Unite for M4O BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

t was a most perfect way to start summer with the worldwide campaign “March for the Ocean” (M4O). Mass events were organized all around the country and all around the world, including one at Charnow Park on Hollywood Beach. The mass celebration created awareness about the threats to our oceans, waterways, beaches, and sea life. It also promoted healthy oceans and clean water for all. Not only is the M4O mission about the saving our blue planet, it’s also about restoring and protecting, and proving it’s never too late to turn the tide. On the beautiful MONTH morning, Local 10’s Jacey Birch welcomed hundreds of South Florida ocean and beach lovers before they embarked on a march to stop plastic pollution and offshore drilling. The march down the Broadwalk was led by the Fort Lauderdale High School Drum Line and Fly Girls. Many attendees dressed in ocean/pollution themed costumes and carried decorated posters to express their concerns and share their message about protecting our oceans. The first stop was at

the Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC). This was the half way point for a little hydration and a visit with MEEC resident rescue sea turtle, Captain. Besides teachers, parents, students, and citizen activists, supporters included environmentalists, scientists, boaters, sailors, fisherman, divers, artists, filmmakers, and more. Hollywood officials Mayor Josh Levy, Commissioner Debra Case, and Kevin Biederman along with Florida Senator Gary Farmer and Broward County Mayor Beam Furr came out to march and speak to attendees. After the march attendees listened to positive reg gae tunes by DJ Lance O of Kulcha Shok while visiting

many non-profit environmental/ocean advocates, such as Sea Shepherd, Marine Megafauna Foundation, Plastic Habitat, Sea Turtle Op and others. One-ofa-kind marine artwork was displayed and created by Free Our Seas and Beyond. These unique pieces were designed with plastic debris collected from the Hollywood Beach coastline. The March was made possible thanks to Surfrider Foundation Broward County Chapter, Free Our Seas and Beyond, City of Hollywood and the Marine Environmental Education Center. “The march was a huge success and we were thrilled with the number of people who came to show their support and want to make a difference for our oceans, waterways and beaches,” expressed Manon Wiese, President of Free Our Seas and Beyond. When I Grow Up I Want to Be … BY BEVERLY PERKINS

U

pon the close of the 2018-2018 school year, Colbert Museum Magnet Elementary students were excited to learn about the diversity of career opportunities that are available to them in the future. Although, many may believe that elementary age children are too young to be exposed to careers such as credit counselors and financial advisors,

these eager little cougars loved hearing all the presentations. Just like a grown-up version of “Show and Tell”, professionals came from a variety of fields ranging from personal trainers, chefs, and musicians to medical technicians and finance advisors. However, the most popular, and probably the crowd favorite, was the Hollywood Police Department and their K9 unit. These officers showed the students how important animals are to their department and what an asset they are as they assist in achieving daily tasks. “Career Day is an awesome day for our staff, students, community leaders, and presenters,” exclaimed Chentel Neat, STEM Magnet Coordinator. “Our students get to be exposed to a wide range of career opportunities from a multicultural group of presenters.” Career presentations were divided up into different grade levels based on interest submitted from both presenters and students. The teachers ultimately determined the proper fit by grade level and their current educational topics. The presenters each shared information about their career, what academic background was necessary to achieve their goals to become the specified career, and what the

financial and personal balance needs to be in order to maintain success in those careers. The 5th graders met with a credit counselor who taught them that it’s never too early to develop good habits to maintain a good credit history which will be instrumental in their success as adults. The students were not just given facts about each occupation but shown passion from those presenting. “Students got to understand the difference between college and career as well as what it is to develop experience through going to trade schools, seminars, and self-awareness training,” added Neat. “The Career Day Committee ensured that Career Day followed the mission statement of Colbert Museum Magnet, where we seek to investigate, understand, and transform our world.”

In three years, I will receive my degree and be able to prove that anything is possible through hard work and kindness. Once again, I want to emphasize that the only way this vision is possible is by the support I received from you. It means the world to me,” said Hailey, UF Undergrad. “Grapes for Grades is the ultimate gathering of the community and businesses in support of our local college-bound students and teachers” said Sara Lavenka, 2018 President of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Grapes for Grades cochair. “Supporting education is critical to ensure that Hollywood has the future work force to support its continued growth.”

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Slow Down and Save Lives BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM hile considering aggressive driving, running red lights and drunken driving as serious traffic-related problems, it is worth noting that speeding in the residential areas is one of the most common sources of citizen complaints to the police. Drivers tend to overestimate their driving skills and underestimate the risks of crashing. They forget that speeding increases the risks of crashes and injuries for several reasons: ► the driver is more likely to lose control of the vehicle; ► the vehicle safety equipment is less effective at higher speeds; ► the distance it takes to stop the vehicle is greater; ► the vehicle travels farther during the time it takes the driver to react to a hazard; and ► crashes are more severe at higher speeds. Moreover, some drivers fail to accept that driving too fast is also poor driving just like driving too close to the car in front, undertaking or failing to signal. Driving too fast is a contributory factor in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries every year. Speed is the biggest killer on the roads, causing about 40% of road deaths each year. Even though it claims many more lives, speeding is seen to be more socially acceptable than drunk driving. It is really essential, for these speeders who do not think that speeding is a serious or dangerous offense, to know that there are times one needs to drive under the national, state speed limit, which is a limit not a target, to avoid vehicular crashes. Historically, streets were not just for traffic, writes David Engwicht, in his book: Street Reclaiming: Creating Streets and Vibrant Communities. They are the epicenter of community life, a place for socializing, social events, celebrations, and economic activity. Therefore, vehicular traffic, particularly of the high-speed variety, can quickly make a neighborhood feel less a safe haven and more like a freeway. Undoubtedly, speeding in residential areas causes five basic types of harm: ► it makes citizens fear for children’s safety; ► it makes pedestrians and bicyclists fear for their safety; ► it increases the risk of vehicular crashes; ► it increases the seriousness of injuries to other drivers, passengers, pedestrians and bicyclists struck by a vehicle; and ► it increases noise from engine acceleration and tire friction. With respect to the harm mentioned above, we strongly recommend that you take action with your neighbors to stop cars speeding on your block. In addition to traffic-calming amenities like speed bumps, traffic circles of varying sizes, speed display boards, there are cheaper ways to reduce speeding where you live with or without government involvement. For instance, the following are responses to the problem of speeding in residential areas: ► Organize block party, gather locals to walk, eat and play together. ► Make grass-roots anti-speeding signs in compliance with recommended specifications to convey heartfelt messages to speeders. ► Post them to encourage drivers to slow down. REMEMBER SLOWING DOWN SAVES LIVES!

The Value of Fat in Cosmetic Surgery BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long-lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants is not applicable, because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting-edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells, as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. Knee Pain – Do I Need Surgery? BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. A common complaint that affects people of all ages is knee pain. General pain can be the result of various ailments, diseases, injury, or most often normal wear and tear which occurs with aging. Arthritis, gout, and other types of infections are medical conditions that also contribute to knee pain. The knee is made up of ligaments, cartilage, fluid, and bone which all work together. If any part of the knee structure is damaged or diseased, everyday life may be severely impacted. In order to determine the right treatment and recovery method, it’s best to define the exact kind of pain to your physician. Knee pain may vary depending on the location and the severity. Some signs and symptoms may include: ► Swelling and stiffness ► Redness and warmth to the touch ► Weakness or instability ► Popping or crunching noises ► Inability to fully straighten the knee ► Inability to bear weight on your knee ► Knee feels like it “gives out” ► Knee feels “locked” and cannot be straightened or flexed ► Difficulty climbing stairs ► Visual deformity Many types of minor knee pain may respond well to self-care measures such as icing, wearing a knee brace, and elevating legs at the end of the day. However, in some cases, one may require pain management intervention to relieve the pain. Non-surgical, non-invasive treatments include: ► Physical Therapy - Strengthening exercises focused upon quadriceps, hamstrings (biceps femoris), and hip musculature can help stabilize the knee and slow or prevent further degenerative changes. ► Pharmacological Intervention – NSAIDs to reduce inflammation are often prescribed. ► Corticosteroid Injection – An injection into the knee joint can often provide pain relief. ► Knee Viscosupplementation – A thick and viscous fluid can be injected in one or a series of injections for pain due to arthritic changes classified as mild to moderate. ► Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) – Nerves are heated using radiofrequency energy in an injectable type of procedure for 90 seconds, with results of pain relief lasting 6-12 months. ► Amniotic Allograft Injection - Amniotic product morselizes the amnion tissue in an effort to preserve its structural properties in an injectable form. ► Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) – The patient’s own bone marrow is used to regenerate tissue and create bone formation. Your physician will help you determine which method is best for you before suggesting surgery. Surgery is an invasive and expensive path to pain relief and is beneficial to only select patients. This is decided on factors such as body mass index (BMI), age, invasiveness, and/or other co-morbidities.

It’s Safety First for Scheck Hillel Students Winning Them First Place BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

t was a phenomenal way to complete the 10th grade for these three Scheck Hillel Community School students; Jaime Burstyn, Samuel Levy and Elliot Shiro won first place in the 4th Annual Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE) Young Engineers Conference 2018. Scheck Hillel hosted this year’s event, in which students from five different South Florida Jewish high schools presented their original STEM capstone projects and had the opportunity to interact with other students by sharing their project experiences. The ambitious Scheck Hillel students shared their smart intersection device, Safe Stop, to make a 4-way stop more safe and efficient. Their invention showed hard work and dedication earning them the title and the recognition. “Today we represented a community of five Jewish high schools all united by our commitment to, a passion for and investment in the power of infusing Jewish education with STEM education. The result is our vibrant, rising generation of innovators, leaders, global citizens, and dreamers...all guided by Jewish

identity and values,” said Dr. Ezra Levy, Scheck Hillel Community School’s Head of School. “Congratulations to Jaime, Samuel, Elliot and their teacher, Michelle Murray, for this incredible accomplishment.” Second place was awarded to Katz Yeshiva High School’s traffic light intersection device that calculates the speed (L-R) Scheck Hillel Grade 10 students: Jaime in which cars should go to make traffic Bursztyn, Elliot Shiro and Samuel Levy more efficient; and third place was awarded to David Posnack Jewish Day this project under the direction of our teacher, School’s robot injector, which helps people with Michelle Murray. Angels Amongst Us – Sunny Isles Beach School Participates in Challenge While Raising Funds BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he City of Sunny Isles Beach invited all residents and visitors to participate in a Guinness World Records TM title attempt for the “most people making sand angels simultaneously” in early MONTH. The current record had 1,387 participants and was achieved by Spectrum Health Foundation Ludington Hospital last year in Michigan. However, “Angels in the Sand” was not only about obtaining a world record, it was about coming together as a community to benefit the Broward Education Foundation. All proceeds were to support the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund. Although the City did not break the record, over $2,000 was raised for the cause. A total of 560 South Floridians came out to participate

including a third-grade class from Norman S. Edelcup/ Sunny Isles Beach K-8 School. Ms. Brandy Cox’s class requested to attend the event as part of their end-of-year class activity. Since the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas earlier this year, these little angels have shown incredible compassion and kindness by writing letters to the victims and their families, expressing great interest in spreading their love, and showing their unified support by participating in “Angels in the Sand”. “Spending time outside of the school walls in community outreach programs teaches our future leaders just how powerful their small contribution can become,” said Ms. Cox. “I will continue to work to inspire my students and to also

create strong, kind, and respectful future leaders.” These small future leaders and young activists stood together to support their Parkland neighbors and remember the angels who are no longer with us. “The bad news is; we didn’t break the record,” said Sunny Isles Beach Mayor George “Bud” Scholl. “But the good news is, we raised a lot of money for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund and had a great time coming together as a community.” The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund administers donations in a fair, transparent, victimcentered, and trauma-informed manner and will be used to assist families of the victims who were killed, the victims who were physically injured, and the victims who experienced psychological trauma while physically present on the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018 during the attack.

Lower Back Pain BY FELIX M. RAMIREZ, D.O. nfortunately, one of the most common areas of pain is in the lower back. The lumbar spine, also known as the low back, interconnects the bones, joints, nerves, ligaments, and muscles. The structure works together to provide support, strength, and flexibility. But, because this structure is so complex, it leaves the low back susceptible to injury and pain. Furthermore, the region supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday actions such as bending and twisting. Lower back muscles are also responsible for flexing and rotating hips while walking, as well as being support for the spinal column. The nerves in the low back supply sensation and give power to the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet. Usually mechanical issues and soft-tissue injuries are the cause of low back pain. These types of injuries can include damage to the intervertebral discs, compression of nerve roots, and improper movement of the spinal joints. But the most common cause is typically a torn or pulled muscle and/or ligament. A variety of symptoms may occur when lower back pain is evident. They may be mild or severely debilitating. They may develop slowly over time or just come on suddenly. The symptoms are also a result of the underlying cause of the pain. The time course of the pain will also help determine the cause. The body will also react to the injury by mobilizing an inflammatory healing response which in turn presents more pain. A muscle may be strained if it is stretched too far and tears. Therefore, damaging the muscle itself. It may be sprained when over-stretching and tearing affects the ligaments which connect the bones together. However, regardless if the muscle or ligament is damaged, the symptoms and treatment are the same. It’s advised to speak to a physician if the following symptoms are occurring: ► Achy, dull pain is present in the low back ► Numbness or tingling (sciatica), perhaps even stinging or burning pain moves from the low back down to the back of thighs, and into the lower legs and feet ► Tightness in the low back, pelvis, and hips along with muscle spasms ► Pain worsens after prolonged sitting or standing ► Difficulty changing positions from standing to sitting and vice-versa
