Hurricane Irma

I

t has been a couple of weeks since those dreadful days. We saw our lights go out, the water come in (and out) and the winds blow. For the most part, however, we were ready. We closed our shutters, prepared our hurricane kits, filled our gas cans and gathered our insurance papers. Some of us evacuated, while others hunkered down and waited for whatever Mother Nature was going to bring. Our community did not come out unscathed, but mercifully the center of the storm avoided us this time. After seeing the near total devastation on the Caribbean island of Barbuda, some of us feel a bit lucky. One of the true honors of publishing this magazine is being able to tell the stories of members of our community doing incredible things. We have already heard countless selfless acts from “Hurricane Heroes” across the community. People putting the welfare of their neighbors before their own. We want to tell these stories. If you know a “Hurricane Hero” drop us a note at editoraventura@ourcitymedia.com. Help us tell his or her story.

wo months ago, Humane Society of Greater Miami joined forces with NBC 6 and Telemundo 51 to host NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations’ Clear the Shelters third annual nationwide pet adoption drive. The Humane Society of Greater Miami waived pet adoption fees as part of the nationwide initiative that seeks to help families find and adopt homeless pets. Since 2015, Clear the Shelters has resulted in more than 70,000 pet adoptions nationwide. “Last year’s Clear the Shelters surpassed our wildest expectations,” said Laurie Hoffman, Executive Director at the Humane Society of Greater Miami. “Seeing pets who have been living at our Soffer and Fine Adoption Center for months – even years – finally have a chance to walk out with a family who will love them forever is an indescribable feeling. We are thrilled to partner with NBC 6 and Telemundo 51 to make this year’s Clear the Shelters another remarkable day for our local community!” More than 500 people visited the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center, and 83 dogs and cats found their new homes and new families during the 2017 national pet adoption day campaign. The third annual Clear the Shelters effort has helped to inspire local communities to take action and open their homes to animals in need, like the Humane Society’s senior dog, Bosco, who had been at the shelter for close to five months and was one of the very last adoptions of the day. Bosco, who was treated for heart-

worm thanks to the organization’s Second Chance Fund, was finally connected with the family of his dreams through this nationwide initiative. Since the effort was expanded to communities all across the country in 2015, Clear the Shelters has resulted in more than 137,000 nationwide pet adoptions. “From the moment, we begin our ten second countdown to kick off the event, to the very end when the last adoption is taking place, there is an incredible energy at this event that never fails to leave a permanent ‘paw print’ on all of our hearts,” adds Hoffman. “Clear the Shelters is about raising awareness of all of the homeless animals in need and coming together as a community to help these deserving animals get a second chance at life. We are thankful and proud to partner with our local stations and NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations for this worthwhile event.” To relive some of the “happy tail” moments of Clear the Shelters 2017, visit the Humane Society of Greater Miami’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/humanesociety305. HEALTH Recommended for all women, especially those age 40 and over.

One woman in eight will get breast cancer at some time in her life. The American Cancer Society recommends an annual mammogram starting at age 40, and a 3D mammogram can find cancer at its earliest stage when treatments are more effective and outcomes are most positive.

n celebration of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida’s 20th anniversary, the company is launching their new look, new logo, and new website just in time for the grand opening of the upcoming season on October 7th at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. In 2012, the company made its debut in New York at the New Dance Amsterdam Theater, and it continuously tours internationally to Europe, Asia and South America. However, the company has proven to be a force in the ballet community of South Florida and is expanding its performances to most important venues in South Florida. These include the Fillmore at the Jackie Gleason Theater, the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, the Julius Littman North Miami Beach Performing Arts Theatre, The Parker Playhouse of Fort Lauderdale, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the Willow Theater in Boca Raton, the Sunrise Civic Center and the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. “We are extremely excited about this upcoming season. It is our 20th anniversary and we are planning celebrations and wonderful programs,” says Ruby Romero-Issaev, Executive Director Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida. “Besides our four programs, we have been lucky to be included in the International Ballet Festival of Miami last month; the Ballet Gala in Lima, Peru; and this summer we were in Mexico and Hong Kong where our principal dancer Mary Carmen Catoya performed under the direction of our director Vladimir Issaev where he was a judge at the International Ballet Competition of Stars of Canaan in Hong Kong.” Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida receives the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs of Miami-Dade County, The Division of Culture of Broward County and

Knocking Out Parkinson’s – Rock Steady Boxing Celebrates One Year Anniversary BY BEVERLY PERKINS

L

ast year a brand-new program, Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), was introduced at the Michael-Ann Russell (MAR) JCC in North Miami Beach to help those living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The progressive disorder of the nervous system gradually affects movement and symptoms worsen as the condition progresses over time. The free MAR-JCC program was spearheaded by Jennifer Enslein of North Miami Beach. Her husband has been battling Parkinson’s for almost five years and they both wanted to be successful in helping others fight the disease through Rock Steady Boxing. “One year ago, I started with little money, 12 boxers and one RSB certified coach. A year later, and 135 sessions of hard work, we have 3 RSB certified coaches and 87 registered boxers fighting back against PD three times a week!” exclaimed Enslein. “This invaluable program is changing people’s lives one punch at a time!” In late August, the group celebrated their anniversary with a big event. Approximately 230 people came out to show their support. Among the supporters were guest speakers, Dr. Carlos Singer, UM Hospital, Movement Disorders Dept. Director and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Both provided encouragement and support to the boxers on their daily and relentless efforts in their fight against PD. David Seldin, one of the original 12 boxers and a program donor, said a few

words representing the team of boxers. Dany Weil, RSB Coach and the MARJCC’s Health and Fitness Director, followed by speaking about the program and the progress the boxers have made. The boxers then gave a demonstration of what a typical RSB session is like before lunch was served. The audience was also anxious to participate, and the entire gym was filled with amazing energy and emotion. The goal for the upcoming year is to offer two more sessions per week, for a total of five sessions. This would allow the boxers to be placed into groups according to their PD stage. “Ray Goforth, the assertive leader of 23,000 staff at Boeing, once said, ‘There are 2 types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: those who are afraid to try and those who are afraid you will succeed.’ Well, RSB at the MAR-JCC is a life lesson to both types of people. When we have a chance to make a difference in this world, nothing should discourage us from that goal,” added Enslein. Classes are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1-2 PM at the MAR-JCC, 18900 NE 25th Ave. in North Miami Beach. Contact Dany Weil, RSB Certified Coach and Director of the Health and Fitness Dept. at danyw@marjcc.org or 305-932-4200 ext. 136 or visit mar-jcc.rsbaffiliate.com for more information.

Dr Susan B Fox, DO ROVI FSVM, is boarded in vascular medicine, phlebology, internal medicine and is a vein and laser expert for decades. Fox Vein and Laser Experts specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease, including varicose veins, leg pain, swelling, ulcer care, venous insufficiency, lipodermatosclerosis, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and clotting disorders. She is also a laser expert and specializes in spot and tattoo removal, skin rejuvenation and tightening. Dr Fox and her team have performed thousands of vein and laser procedures. They have developed their own vein techniques and are recognized as vein and laser experts. Dr. Fox answered some commonly asked questions about her practice. Describe your practice. We are a full service vein and laser practice and vascular lab. We perform all types of minimally invasive, cutting edge, vein procedures and non-ablative laser procedures. We rid people of their varicose and spider veins; heal venous ulcers; help leg swelling, aching, heaviness and tiredness; and improve the overall appearance of the legs. We are also one of the only practices in South Florida to offer the Picoway Laser. This is the best laser for tattoo removal, spot removal and non-ablative skin resurfacing. It is a “lunchtime lift” that will smooth wrinkles, build collagen and remove discolorations. Describe your experience. After training in Cleveland at the Cleveland Clinic, I practiced in Cleveland and later moved to Miami. I have been performing vein and laser procedures for decades. We have been

featured as vein and laser experts by multiple news programs in America and Latin America. I have written numerous articles and lectured extensively on varicose veins. I have developed my own technique for injecting veins and our office has been a recognized as a training facility by multiple corporations. Tell me about some of your “firsts.” I was the first physician in Cleveland to perform endovenous laser ablation and one of the first nationally. We were the first in Broward County to offer the Clarivein procedure and one of the first in the country. For decades, I have performed ultrasound guided injections and foam sclerotherapy. We are also one of the first in South Florida to own and offer the Picoway laser and Resolve by Picoway: the fastest and best laser for tattoo removal, spot removal and skin rejuvenation. We have decades of experience treating veins and using lasers and thousands of happy patients. Nothing speaks louder than a happy patient. What are some of the procedures you offer? We offer the newest and best minially- invasive vein procedures including: Endovenous laser ablation, Clarivein, Vein Gogh, Venaseal, Phlebectomies and ultrasound guided foam and regular sclerotherapy. We offer tattoo and spot removal with the Picoway laser. This laser clears discolorations, spots and tattoos of all colors faster and with no down time. It is also less painful than prior lasers. It can be used for skin rejuvenation, hand rejuvenation, to remove discoloration from varicose veins in the ankles and feet, remove sun spots on the face and décolleté, smooth scars and erase acne scars. Resolve by Picoway shrinks pores, tightens skin, erases sun spots and discolorations and builds collagen with no down time. Where do you perform procedures? All procedures are done in our office. In most cases, we can get rid of your large varicose veins, leg pain and swelling with minimally invasive procedures done under insurance in less than 30 minutes. What is vein disease and how does it progress? Veins are blood vessels that have one- way valves that return blood to the heart.

FEATURE STORY

oes the appearance of varicose veins make you self-conscious about your legs? Do you hate your leg swelling, heaviness, pain, tattoos, sun- spots and wrinkles? Fox Vein and Laser Experts offers a wide range of safe, comfortable vein and laser treatments to rid you of varicose veins, spots, tattoos, wrinkles and more.

Dr. Susan B. Fox and her team have successfully performed tens of thousands of vein procedures.

These valves often do not work correctly and can cause “reflux” or back flow. This causes blood to pool in the ankles and pain and heaviness and swelling in the legs that worsens at the end of the day, after travelling or standing. Over time, the ankles start to get more and more veins. The legs get more painful, swollen and bulging veins appear. Discoloration appears in the ankles and skin changes in the ankles and feet develop. As time goes on skin changes may worsen and the person may develop venous eczema, scarring called lipodermatosclerosis and open sores or ulcers. People may have bleeding veins that are hard to stop. What should people do about vein disease? Patients with symptoms should come see us and have an ultrasound to diagnose their specific vein problems. In the meantime, the person should elevate their legs, wear compression hose and take anti-inflammatories for discomfort. Why should people remove tattoos? Approximately 25-30% of people in the United States have tattoos. At any given time, around a quarter of them are looking into tattoo removal. Men remove them more than women, usually for their profession and to move up the corporate ladder. Many jobs will not employ someone or move them up to management with visible tattoos. Governmental jobs, military, police and others do not want tattoos in visible areas. As well, some people put their significant others name on them. Some people just change stages in their life and the tattoos are no longer a part of who they are. Some people want room for more ink. Whatever the reason, Picoway is the best tattoo removal laser. It removes all colors of ink faster using pico technology. It works better and with less

pain and fewer treatment sessions than other lasers. Tell me about Resolve by Picoway. Picoway won laser of the year in 2015. It is one of the newest and best lasers for skin rejuvenation, skin tightening, spot removal, collagen building and reducing the signs of aging with no pain and no down time. It can be used on the face for skin rejuvenation to shrink pore size, tighten skin and rebuild collagen. It can also be used for hand rejuvenation, décolleté to remove sun spots, remove acne scars, refine and lighten scars on other parts of the body (post breast surgery, c-sections, tummy tucks, etc.). It is fast, effective and non-ablative, which means you won’t shed your skin and YOU LOOK AMAZING ALMOST IMMEDIATELY! Celebrities are using the Picoway to get ready for the red carpet. Before

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

A

ventura City of Excellence School (ACES) is committed to preparing their students with the skills necessary to succeed in a truly global and connected world. Students must be equipped to meet the needs of an uncertain job market with endless possibilities of currently unknown careers. Because of this commitment they will be implementing many technologybased opportunities to their student body in the upcoming school year. They will continue as a “Google for Education” school, to provide their students with avenues for development in collaboration, critical thinking, curation, communication and creativity. They will also be implementing the cutting-edge technology offered by Nearpod to students in fourth through eighth grades. These programs will allow students to engage in blending learning opportunities that extend well beyond the traditional classroom. Students are offered a variety of online activities ranging from participating in virtual reality field trips to receiving real time feedback from their teachers. “We are very excited that this year our fifth-grade students will pilot a 1:1 program using Dell Chromebooks. Each fifth grader will be assigned a specific Chromebook to use during the school day allowing teachers to enrich and infuse their lessons with technology and amplify student voice and choice,” says Ms. Matamoros, ACES Middle School US History Teacher. “Our goal is for the 1:1 pro-

gram to not only increase engagement but encourage our students to become increasingly active learners.” This year ACES has invested in a full live production studio with a dedicated green screen room to be used for the new Digital Communications program. The elective class will be offered to middle school students. “Through this innovative program, students will be prepared to take on new opportunities that are just starting to emerge in the business world, as well as give them the critical thinking skills necessary for the jobs that don’t exist yet,” says Frida Lapidot, ACES Digital Communications Teacher. “Using all of the latest in digital communications technology and methodology, we will form meaningful connections between our staff, students, parents and our community.” Elizabeth Cooper, ACES Fifth Grade Reading & Language Arts Teacher, sums it up by saying, “As educators, it gives us the opportunity to engage our students in new and innovative ways. The students are so excited and the best part is, we’re learning to use these program applications together, which makes it a collaborative effort between teachers and students.” To learn more about ACES, please visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/aventuracharter.

atalie Broide, a Scheck Hillel Community School 2017 graduate, was honored by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) for the second consecutive year. Natalie won the 2016 “South Florida Regional Aspirations in Computing Award” and earned a 2017 Honorable Mention. She recently graduated from Scheck Hillel in May and is currently attending the University of Florida. Throughout her high school career, Natalie has shown a deep interest in technology. She has participated in organizations such as Girls Who Code, a Natalie Broide prestigious national program designed to inspire, educate and equip girls with the computing skills to pursue 21st century opportunities. She has also been invited to participate in technology conferences such as TECHNOLOchicas and CODeLLA, and two years ago she built a real computer as part of her school’s IB Project.

“Natalie is a phenomenal student and the perfect example of the amazing impact an individualized education can have on students,” said Nancy Penchev, Scheck Hillel’s I Lab instructor and Natalie’s advisor and supporter through this journey. “As an educator, I really encourage my students to go further.” Scheck Hillel is guided by this personalized approach to education. “At Scheck Hillel, we shift the traditional question from, ‘What do I want to do when I grow up’ to ask, ‘Who do I want to be,’” said Dr. Ezra Levy, Head of School. “Every student is unique, and our job as a school is to nurture the strengths of each child. Natalie’s accomplishments demonstrate the results of this philosophy. We are very proud of her achievements.” “Receiving this award has not only motivated me to continue toward a degree in computer engineering, but it has also allowed me to influence younger girls to get involved in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) fields as well,” said Natalie. “After winning the award, CODeLLA invited me to speak to a room of hundreds of young girls about my experiences building a computer and as a woman in technology. Doing so was immensely fulfilling, and I hope to continue inspiring others to do what they are passionate about.” Scheck Hillel Community School educates and inspires students 18 months-Grade 12 to become exemplary global citizens with enduring Jewish identity and values through an individualized college preparatory curriculum highlighted by STEM and design, Capstone, college dual enrollment, arts, athletics and community service. AMC’s Young Professionals Give Some Homegrown Love to NMB Senior High CHAMBER NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

his past summer, Aventura Marketing Council’s (AMC) Aventura Young Professionals (AYP) Committee visited North Miami Beach Sr. High School. Much to their dismay, they were surprised to see the unkept area which revealed a small plot of land containing a single tree and plenty of scattered weeds. The Chargers’ school yard was in much need of some long overdue ‘TLC’. The ambitious group contacted Luke, owner and founder of Luke’s Landscaping, who is responsible for beautifying much of Aventura. Without hesitation, Luke agreed to oversee the landscape design and staff. “We were delighted to be part of this community effort,” said Luke, “We want the students to look forward to eating their lunch outdoors while enjoying their new garden!” For almost three decades The Aventura Marketing

Council / World-Class Chamber of Commerce has made continuous improvements in the community and great strides for charitable organizations. They are recognized as one of the most successful and progressive organizations in South Florida, and have accumulated many accolades and awards for their outstanding business networking events, and community outreach to area school and charities. The AMC has eleven committees that members can be involved with. The Aventura Young Professionals committee is one that creates a networking environment in which young professionals, ages 40 and under, can increase their opportunities for promotion amongst their peers and develop their leadership skills. “Giving back” is one of the favorite activities of this professional group, and North Miami Beach Sr. High School was the most recent recipient of their generosity.

AYP Chairman Brandon Stein, STEINLAW, and his ace team of ‘landscapers’: Helena Farber, FarberLaw; Jessica Gibby, Adena Grill & Frankey’s Sports Bar; and John Hershman, Northern Trust, worked closely with Laura Groth, Account Manager from Luke’s Landscaping, to plan this special day. On a sweltering August morning, Laura Groth, Jr. Account Manager Holsombach and four other experienced landscapers met the AYP team at the site and put their green thumbs to work. Everyone worked together to make the sad little plot of land into a green oasis, featuring decorative rocks, beautiful bushes and plush perennial peanut grass. “On behalf of our entire school staff and students, I want to thank Luke’s Landscaping and the Aventura Young Professionals for their time, energy and resources that will bring a whole new energy to that side of our school,” said NMB Principal Randy Milliken. “I can’t believe how great it came out” For more information on the Aventura Marketing Council / World-Class Chamber of Commerce, please visit www. aventuramarketingcouncil.com or call 305-932-5334.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Cyberbullying is Huge and Challenging BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM

T

oday’s generation of children and adolescents are growing up immersed in a steady flow of media. Research has shown that: ▸▸ Almost 75% of teens own a smartphone where they can access the Internet, watch television and videos, and download interactive applications (apps). Mobile apps allow photo-sharing, gaming and video-chatting. ▸▸ 25% of teens described themselves as “constantly connected” to the Internet. ▸▸ 76% of teens use at least one social media site. More than 70% of teens maintain a social media portfolio of several selected sites including, as indicated by rates of use in the PEW survey: Instagram (52%), Snapchat (41%), Twitter (33%), Google+ (33%), Vine (24%), Tumblr (14%), and other social media outlets (11%). Hence, as more of life has become digital and online, bullies have gone there too. According to the Common-Sense Media report, the indirect nature of the Internet allows kids to be mean, because of the faceless power that the screen builds in, and being online also removes the empathy that face-to-face contact creates. The hurtful actions of a cyberbully can reach a child and/or teenager anytime he or she uses a smartphone or computer, and the bullying messages can also spread virally through the Internet to many other people at school or in the community, making this type of bullying potentially very embarrassing and lasting. It can be challenging for parents to figure out if your child is being victim of online bullying. As with all childhood changes from usual behavior, we recommend that anything that is extreme and interfering with home, school and friends warrants further review. Furthermore, look for subtle signs or change in behavior: ▸▸ Not wanting to go to school ▸▸ Becoming upset after using the computer or cell phone ▸▸ Seeming more sad, withdrawn, or moodier than usual ▸▸ Avoiding questions Studies show kids who bully may have similar signs, but you may notice unusual computer activity such as switching screens when you walk in or multiple log-ins that you do not recognize. Ross Ellis, founder and CEO, Love Our Children USA, advised parents to take all threats any child tells them about seriously. It is very important to evaluate all threats a child informs you of to determine the level of intensity and how much danger your child may be in. What should parents do if their child is being bully? ▸▸ Save all e-mails, instant messages, and texts ▸▸ Try to talk to the other parents and determine what may be occurring ▸▸ Talk to the school staff and be prepared to help if school staff are not sure how to get involved ▸▸ Call the police if the situation seems to place your child in serious danger with a significant threat, and/or the other parent will not help you. Any child spending time online is at risk for being bullied. Teens may think they know all about today’s media, but they may not know enough about viewing and interacting with media safely and wisely. Therefore, we recommend you help your children balance their online and offline lives. To learn more about the City of North Miami Beach Police Department, please visit www.citynmb.com. For emergencies, please dial 9-1-1 and all other non-emergencies, please call (305) NMB-POLICE or (305) 662-7654.

BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.

O

ne of the most difficult syndromes to diagnose is fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, the condition cannot be confirmed through a simple laboratory test, or even on an x-ray. A physician must determine the diagnosis based on a patient’s symptoms. Because symptoms can occur alone or along with other conditions, it takes time to truly diagnose. Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain that affects the muscles and soft tissues. Chronic muscle pain, fatigue, sleep problems, memory and mood issues, painful tender and/or trigger points are often the most common symptoms. Symptoms may occur after a physical trauma, surgery, infection, or significant psychological stress. However, sometimes symptoms may just develop over time with no specific cause. The American College of Rheumatology says that one of the criteria used as a guideline for diagnosing fibromyalgia is widespread pain throughout the body for at least three months. “Widespread” is defined as pain on both sides of the body, as well as above and below the waist. Researchers also believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. For some reason, women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men. Many people who have fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression. Although there is no cure, symptoms can be relieved through medications, lifestyles changes, such as exercise and stress management. Other possible causes can be an underlying problem such as rheumatic diseases, mental health problems, and/or neurological disorders. Your physician may still recommend blood tests to get a complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, thyroid function, and vitamin D levels. Additionally, your physician may also perform a careful physical exam of your muscles and joints, as well as a neurological exam to look for other causes of your symptoms. If there is a chance that you may be suffering from sleep apnea, your doctor may recommend a sleep study. After gathering all the appropriate and crucial information, your physician will be able to assess what may be causing your symptoms and determine and develop an effective treatment plan. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 340, Aventura, 33180. To schedule an appointment, please call (305)932-1660.
