A Fresh Start to the New School Year

As summer draws to a close, it’s astonishing how quickly the new school year approaches. This year, Broward County students head back to school earlier than ever, with the first day set for August 12th. As we transition from beach days to school days, it’s time to gather supplies, pick out new lunch boxes, and finish those last-minute summer reading projects. Preparing for school has certainly evolved over the years, becoming more complex with the rise of technology and diverse educational choices.

The era of covering textbooks in brown paper bags is long gone. Today’s students are immersed in a digital world where learning materials are accessed through smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks. With countless educational apps and online resources, students can explore a wealth of information right at their fingertips.

After-school activities have expanded far beyond traditional sports and music programs. Now, students can delve into coding classes, dual language programs, and much more. Parents, too, have a plethora of educational paths to consider. Alongside conventional public and private schools, options like charter schools, homeschooling, and virtual learning provide families with the flexibility to choose what best fits their needs.

Feeling overwhelmed by back-to-school preparations? Don’t worry—Our City has got you covered. This issue features our extensive Back-to-School Guide, filled with information on the best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in the area. Additionally, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of after-school activities, from arts and crafts to YMCA programs, designed to help you plan a successful school year.

While preparing for the upcoming school year, don’t forget to savor the final weeks of summer. Enjoy the sun, create lasting memories, and embrace the freedom of the season. Soon enough, school will be back in session, and a new chapter of learning and growth will begin.

So, take a moment to relax, enjoy the remaining days of summer, and know that you have everything you need to start the school year off right. Here’s to a fantastic and successful new school year!

PARKLAND 17 MEMORIAL FOUNDATION SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT FOR DESIGN OF PUBLIC MEMORIAL

SIX FINALISTS NARROWED DOWN TO THREE

The Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation, a 501(c)(3) Florida not-for-profit corporation, is seeking public input for the design of the official public Memorial to honor the 17 victims who were taken from their families and our community too soon in the February 14, 2018, Parkland school massacre.

The Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation narrowed the submitted designs down from six to three, following a nationwide design competition. The three finalists are:

• Gordon Huether, Gordon Huether Studio, Napa, California: The proposal is based on concentric circles, with a central fountain with seating, surrounded by 17 limestone obelisks – a tribute to each victim. These forms hold each victim’s name and include a small shelf for visitors to place mementos. The poem “But for a Small Moment” is engraved into the surface of the plaza. Shade structures have been added to shield visitors from the sun, and feature laser-cutouts that create unique shadows as the sun moves throughout the day. To complete the circular theme, 17 royal palm trees and an outer seating wall form the border of the Memorial.

• Humanity Memorial Inc., Sutton, West Virginia, with EDSA, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Dills Architects, Virginia Beach, Virginia: 17 Rays of Light is an original tranquil symbol of light, with a peaceful reflection pool and heroic scale honoring their peaceful spirit; a haven for remembrance and immersion in their spirit of light. A Sanctuary celebrates their vibrant life amidst the beauty and privacy of nature and 17 private gardens, infused with emotion and profound meaning of light honoring the essence of who they were-our light continues touching us, not dimmed by tragedy but forever shines. 17 unique stars represent their uniqueness irreplaceable. Patterns of the families’ choices will be created.

• VLC One, Inc., Hollywood, Florida: There will be 17 angular sculptures rising 30 feet, each extending outward to a sheer curtain of water flowing continuously into a reflection reservoir. Each sculpture represents an individual precious life lost. The eternal cascading flow evokes ideas of profound depth, changing feelings, love and sadness, but also rejuvenation, and transformation. A 16-inch (minimum) cast bronze plaque is permanently embedded into each pillar as a tribute to each victim with an optional "bas relief" portrait as well as a QR code for more information. Permanent tasteful seating will be included surrounding the memorial. A separate historical placard is provided at the memorial entrance.

“The Foundation, with input from the families of the victims, have identified the final three possibilities for the design,” said Tony Montalto, father of Gina Montalto, who is Vice Chairman of the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation and the liaison to the families. “Once we have input from the public and further input from the families, the design firms will make a formal presentation, and we will award the contract from there.”

The public can visit https://parkland17.org/finalists/ to view the final three designs and provide their input. The memorial will honor the victims in perpetuity and will be erected within a quiet, serene 150-acre preserve that borders Coral Springs and Parkland to unite the two affected communities. To stay updated on progress, visit https://parkland17.org and click on “register for updates” to submit an email address and zip code.

“This memorial will be a destination, not only for the families but for all of us who want to honor and remember these innocent souls,” said Foundation Chair Michael Moser, First Responder Representative. “We cannot, however, bring this memorial to life without everyone’s help. It

will be the only public memorial, so we ask that companies, organizations, foundations and the public to please donate to this project to ensure its success.”Tax exempt donations can be made at parkland17.org/donate/.

The victims’ families are steadfast in their desire to have a public Memorial built to honor their loved ones taken too soon: Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Beigel, Martin Duque Anguiano, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup and Peter Wang.

World Class Joint Replacement Surgery at Family Health and Surgery Center

Total joint replacement surgery has come a long way. Today more than 1.3 million hip and knee joints are replaced in the United States annually. A growing number of these surgeries are performed with the aid of robotic technology and in outpatient surgery centers.

The orthopaedic surgeons at Cleveland Clinic in Florida have been on the forefront of many advancements that make joint replacement surgery safer, more durable and less invasive. “Our specialists are among the best in their field, contributing to innovations in hip and knee replacement and joint revision surgeries,” said orthopaedic surgeon Carlos Higuera Rueda, MD.

Dr. Higuera is one of a team of surgeons performing robotic-assisted and same-day joint replacement surgery at Cleveland Clinic’s Coral Springs Family Health and Surgery Center. He serves as Director of the Levitetz

State-of-the-art Surgery Center

Cleveland Clinic Coral Springs has been a source of world-class orthopaedic care since 2021, bringing advanced technology and leading-edge approaches to residents of Coral Springs, Parkland and surrounding communities.

Located at the southeast corner of North University Drive and the Sawgrass Expressway, the three-story, 73,000-square-foot facility features more than 20 specialties, outpatient surgery, endoscopy and advanced imaging services.

“The ambulatory surgery center on the third floor of our Coral Springs facility has large operating rooms

at Cleveland Clinic Coral Springs

equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by highly skilled surgical teams,” said Dr. Higuera. “It is accredited by the Joint Commission and adheres to the highest standards of care and best practices.”

Less Invasive Joint Replacement

Robotic-assisted joint replacement is one of the most significant innovations in orthopaedic care in recent years. It involves using a robotic arm to operate with less soft tissue disruption and greater precision.

“We use advanced imaging and sophisticated software to create detailed surgical plans unique to a patient’s anatomy,” said Dr. Higuera. “Virtual simulations before surgery allow us to map out the best approach, and then we use computer navigation assistance during surgery to make sure we place joint implants to achieve the best functional result.”

Patients typically experience less pain and a quicker recovery with robotic-assisted joint replacement due to less bone and soft tissue disruption. About 95% of total knee replacements at Cleveland Clinic Coral Springs are performed with this innovative technology.

“Our approach helps get patients back on their feet faster and has made it possible for an increasing number of joint replacements to be performed in an outpatient setting,” said Dr. Higuera.

Same-day Discharge

Same-day discharge hip and knee replacements, offered at Cleveland Clinic in Coral Springs, are safe and effective outpatient procedures that can be done in a few hours and allow patients to recover at home. “Many more patients are seeking out this option than ever before,” said Dr. Higuera.

Following outpatient joint replacement, patients return home the same day as their surgery. Among the many benefits is a more comfortable and familiar atmosphere to recover, a potentially smaller risk of infection, less pain, and a speedier return to normal life.

To help patients heal from surgery efficiently and effectively, Cleveland Clinic offers post-surgery rehabilitation at locations in Weston, Parkland and Palm Beach Gardens. “For certain patients, we also recommend prehabilitation, a therapy designed to increase their strength before surgery,” said Dr. Higuera.

Patients who are relatively healthy, motivated and have adequate support at home may be eligible for same-day discharge hip and knee replacement surgery. Visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Ortho to learn more.

It is so hard to believe that the summer is already slowly coming to an end and that the school year is about to start again. As a mom of two children who are now grown up, I can certainly relate to those of you sending your children off to preschool, kindergarten, middle school, high school, or college for the first time, and it can be hard. However, be assured that your child can manage the new situation, and more importantly, let your child know that you know they can handle it and that you will always be there to support them. If you have the time, volunteering at school can be very rewarding. My time volunteering in the PTA with the sports and debate teams is a time I fondly remember and led to not only helping support the school and programs but also to long-lasting friendships. I wish everyone a wonderful rest of the summer and a great start to the 2024/2025 school year!

One of the issues I have been very involved in within the Florida Legislature is mental health. In 2021, I was honored to sponsor legislation that established the Commission on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder. Former Speaker Chris Sprowls and current Speaker Paul Renner both appointed me to serve on the Commission.

Currently, I also chair our Children and Youth Behavioral Health Subcommittee. Over the past several months, we have had many meetings to work on recommendations for the Commission to approve. On August 20th, the Commission will be meeting in person in Orlando. For those who are interested in following the work we are doing and/or joining our meetings remotely, please visit https://www.myflfamilies.com/services/ samh/commission-mental-health-and-substance-use-disorder.

My team and I are always available to help in any way we can. Please reach out to us if we can be of assistance either via email at HD095@ myfloridahouse.gov or at 954-956-5600. We have an email newsletter we send out regularly with information about District 95, the legislative process, and resources that are available in the community. If you would like to be added to our newsletter list, please email us with “subscribe” in the subject line. Additionally, connect with me on social media. PARKLAND UPDATE

Whether you are a grade school student, returning to college, preparing to attend a new school or a parent of all of the above, now is the time to shift from summer mode to the more structured habits and routines that will set you up for success.

As you prepare for the new school year, get into a mindset that will allow you to always continue to learn and grow. In many cases, the attitudes we adopt as we enter the new school year will help set the tone for our experiences throughout the rest of the year.

For example, take a moment to think about the magnitude of the preparation involved in getting our schools up and running for a new school year this fall. Remember to show respect and appreciation to teachers, school administrators, and classmates. When we make a point to focus during class, complete assignments on time, and follow school rules, we are demonstrating that we are committed to our education and value the people who make up our school community.

Setting goals before school starts is also a great way to establish markers for academic and personal growth. Think about ways you can hold yourself accountable for maintaining or improving your grades. You could also consider joining a club or sports team or volunteering in the community. Here are a few quick pointers for setting goals before the start of school:

• Get in touch with a friend before school starts, so that you have a point of connection.

• Eat a healthy diet.

• Start going to sleep at a time that allows you to be well-rested for the school day.

• Establish a study space at home.

• If you aren’t using an alarm to wake up, consider using one now.

• Adopt overall habits that help you take care of yourself physically and mentally.

Make the most of the few weeks ahead to approach the new school year with positivity, determination, and kindness. If we strive to be kind and caring to those around us—especially those struggling with personal or academic challenges—we can make a positive difference in the lives of others and foster a sense of community within our schools that will last all year long.

Pet of the Month

Meet Milo, our lovable, affectionate, and energetic 3-yearold Mini Aussie. He adores long golf cart rides, chasing squirrels, playing monkey in the middle, and catching games. Milo loves to pretend he's a tough dog when he's on a leash, but his favorite thing is giving long hugs. Be careful, though—his hugs might just smother you with love!

ENSURING YOUR VOTE COUNTS, DESPITE FL LAW CHANGES

As your State Representative for Coral Springs, I want to bring an important update to your attention regarding recent changes in Florida's voting process.

“Counties scrubbed their existing ballot requests after the 2022 election because of a change in state law that requires voters to request a mail ballot each general election cycle every two years.”1 This means that if you wish to vote by mail in upcoming elections, you will need to submit a new request.

What This Change Means for You: In the past, once you requested a mail-in ballot, it remained valid for future elections, providing a convenient option for many voters. However, the state has made the decision to reset all mail-in ballot requests. This action requires all voters who prefer to vote by mail to reapply for their ballots every two years.

Steps to Request a New Mail-In Ballot:Check Your Registration: Ensure that your voter registration is up-to-date. You can verify your registration status online on the Broward Supervisor of Elections page under ‘Register or Update’. The deadline to register for the 2024 General Election is October 7, 2024.

• Request Your Ballot: To request a mail-in ballot, visit the Broward County Supervisor of Elections website. Here are the steps you need to follow:

• Visit the Supervisor of Elections website for Broward County at Broward Votes.gov.

• Navigate to the page-wide section titled “Request your Mail-In Ballot” on the middle of the page.

• Submit your request online, or you can choose to download the form and mail it to the Supervisor of Elections office. Further instructions are on the website.

• Receive Confirmation: Once you submit your request, you will receive confirmation from the Supervisor of Elections. Keep an eye on your mail or email for this confirmation, as it will include important details about when you can expect to receive your ballot.

• Mark Your Calendar: Be aware of key dates and deadlines. These can be found on the Supervisor of Elections website as well. Make sure your request is submitted well in advance of the election to ensure you receive your ballot on time. Election Day for the General Election is on November 5th, however, this means the deadline to request a mail-in ballot is October 24th at 5pm.

Why This Matters: Voting by mail provides a secure and convenient way to participate in the election, especially for those who may face difficulties getting to the polls in person on Election Day. By reapplying for your mail-in ballot, you ensure that your voice continues to be heard in local, state, and national elections.

Need Assistance? As your State Representative, my office is dedicated to assisting you with any questions or concerns you may have about the voting process. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us for help with requesting your mail-in ballot or any other election-related matters.

Your participation in the electoral process is crucial. Let's work together to make sure that every eligible voter in Coral Springs has the opportunity to cast their ballot and make their voice heard.
