Cooper City Dads and Sons Prepare to Spend Quality Time Together BY DEBBY TEICH

alling all Jedi’s. On January 26, Cooper City dads and their sons will have an opportunity to enjoy a special evening together at the Father-Son Adventure Night. If dad is unavailable, grandfathers, step-dads, and uncles are always welcome. The event will be held at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center, from 6:30pm-9pm. “Father-son relationships are extremely important to a child’s development,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “We believe this event provides a positive environment full of fun and entertaining activities to cultivate their bond.” Approximately 100 fathers and sons are expected to attend the night of adventure, which will include dinner, games, activities, and fun. They will rotate around to different activities geared around this year’s “Star Wars” theme. Seating is limited and no tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are on sale at the Community Center. The cost is $25/pair and $10 each additional son. Proof of residency is required. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. All of the events are limited to Cooper City residents and require reservations. At Mom-Son Night of Fun, held in September, over 100 moms enjoy an action-packed evening filled with

activities, prizes, dancing and dinner. At Grandparents Day, held in September, they enjoy fun, games, crafts, snacks and an old-fashioned ice cream party. At the Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, held two months ago,

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! Eat to the Beat in Cooper City

ooper City residents of all ages are invited to Eat to the Beat. There will be live music, as well as food trucks – creating the perfect environment for a fun family evening in Cooper City. Just bring chairs, blankets and your appetite! Over 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, which will be held on January 19, from 5:30pm - 9:30pm, at Cooper City Sports Complex (Stirling Road and Palm Avenue). “We wanted to offer a fun opportunity for families and their neighbors in the community to gather,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “It’s a great family event. We have a large variety of food trucks, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.” The event is offered twice a year – in January and July. There will be live music, bounce houses, face painting, obstacle courses, bear and wine. There will also be a variety of food trucks. Rachel Marx plans to attend with her family. “Last year’s event was a blast,” said Marx. “It was a great way to spend time with friends and neighbors, and also enjoy some delicious food.”

Kiwanis Club of Cooper City Sponsors Pancake Breakfast and Garage Sale

he Kiwanis Club of Cooper City is committed to serving the children of the world, as well as those in their own community of Cooper City. Throughout the year, the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City reaches out to those in need. On January 20, the club will sponsor the 10th Annual Pancake Breakfast and Garage Sale at Cooper City High School. It is open to the community. The event typically raises $3,000 - $5,000, which is used for scholarships for Cooper City Key Club seniors and to help defray the cost of some events. Breakfast begins at 7:30am and costs $6. It includes pancakes, sausage, pancake toppings, coffee, juice and pastries. Approximately 400 people typically attend the garage sale, in search of a variety of old and new items. Vendors can purchase a spot for $25, which includes two parking spaces. They must bring their own tables, chairs and tents. The application for vendors is on the group’s Facebook page. Members are involved in events throughout the year. In December, the club visited with the children from Children’s Harbor and made Christmas decorations. They also assembled baskets with food and toys to help local Cooper City residents through the

Cooper City/Davie Honor Veterans

n November 11, both the Town of Davie and City of Cooper City offered Veterans Day ceremonies to honor the men and women that have served as military veterans in the United States Armed Forces. In Cooper City, the 2nd Annual Veterans Day ceremony was presented by the Cooper City Recreation Department at Cooper City Memorial Park. It included an introduction and welcome by the City Commission and several veteran guest speakers. BSO police and fire honor guard units presented colors, raise the flag and perform a 21-gun salute. The American Legion hosted a lunch following the ceremony. “Veterans Day gives all Americans a special opportunity to pay tribute to all those brave men and women who, throughout our history, have given freely and unselfishly of themselves in defense our country,” said Christine Garcia, Director of Recreation for the City of Cooper City. “We honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve.” In Davie, approximately 200 people honored veterans at the Town of Davie’s Veterans Day Ceremony, held at Veterans Park. The audience included veterans, family members, the Davie Police Department, Davie Fire Rescue, Boy Scouts, the general public, and others. During the ceremony, the Town Council placed flowers at the monument; there was a 21-gun salute; the Florida Youth orchestra performed patriotic music; and the Police Pipe and Drum performed.

Davie Residents to Celebrate MLK Day

ach year, on the third Monday of January, the nation celebrates the birth, life and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It remembers the injustices that Dr. King fought for in his quest for the freedom, equality, and dignity of all races and peoples. On January 14, Davie residents will have an opportunity to honor his dreams and vision at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at Driftwood Estates Park, 3300 NW 77th Avenue, from 1pm to 4pm. Hundreds are expected to attend the celebration, which will include light refreshments, youth entertainment, guest speakers, a poetry contest and kids’ activities. The Town of Davie has Davie residents enjoyed the 2017 MLK festivities.

Town of Davie Seeks Contestants for Miss Orange Blossom Pageant 2017 queens

irls, ages 2-24 years old, who are Davie residents or attend a Davie school have an opportunity to compete in the Miss Orange Blossom Pageant for a chance to be crowned one of Davie’s Queens. Winners will represent the Town at events throughout the year, including the Orange Blossom Parade and Festival, Hippity Hoppity Hunt and Lighting of the Greens. “This year will be the second year since we’ve resumed the Miss Orange Blossom pageant,” said Leona Henry, Town of Davie Public Relations Coordinator. “We had some amazing, intelligent and poised young ladies who were contestants in the pageant last year and we can’t wait to see the contestants this year. The pageant is a great way to showcase the wonderful young women that represent the All American Davie Girl.” The pageant will be held on January 27, from 2pm to 4pm, at the Bamford Sports Complex (Pine Island Park), 3801 S Pine

Island Rd in Davie. There will be a rehearsal on January 25. The cost to participate is $25 before January 25 and $30 after. The girls will compete in a party dress of their choice, as well as the western wear of their choice. There will not be a talent competition. One queen and two princesses will be selected in each age division. Davie Residents Celebrate the Holidays

avie residents celebrated the holidays with friends and family in a variety of ways. During the Holiday Craft Show and Green Fair, over 100 vendors came together for a two-day craft fair and green market. There were demonstrations, live entertainment and a Kids Korner. During the Holiday Tree, Menorah and Kinara Decorating Contest, school and civic groups decorated the menorahs, kinaras and Christmas trees that lined the entrance to the Davie Town Hall. At Holiday Lighting of the Greens, families watched the Mayor and Town Council turn on thousands of holiday lights to officially proclaim it “holiday time” in Davie. During the Jingle Bell Parade, the South Florida Trail Riders paraded their decorated horses down Orange Drive. Santa visited the Old Davie School Historical Museum for Old Davie Christmas, which included pony rides, a petting zoo and more. At the Winter Holiday Snow Play, children played in 20 tons of snow; took pictures with Santa; and enjoyed a petting zoo, pony rides and more.

Cooper City Residents Celebrate the Holidays

n December 1, the City of Cooper City kicked off the holiday season with Light Up Cooper City at Memorial Park. The family event included a craft show, train, bounce houses, and numerous children’s activities. There were community performances throughout the night and local schools decorated trees for all to see. A special visitor from the North Pole made an appearance. On December 9, Cooper City children enjoyed a magical meal during Brunch with Santa at Cooper City High School. Participants received a photo with Santa, completed a craft project and participated in “holiday” games. There was also a new event to celebrate the holiday spirit - Holiday Home Decorating Contest. The annual event will be held at the Public Safety Complex, from 10am to 2pm. “The Fire and Police Expo gives the community a chance to interact with the Davie Police and Fire Rescue personnel, and an opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes at the Police and Fire Departments,” said Leona Henry, Town of Davie Public Relations Coordinator. “Davie residents and the community will have an opportunity to participate in various activities, and enjoy the displays and demonstrations. The event was planned and produced by an all-volunteer committee of Forest Ridge residents and funded by generous sponsors. Flamingo Elementary Receives Donation of School Supplies

n 2010, Broward Education Foundation (BEF) established a Tools for Schools Broward Center to provide students in need with free school supplies. Teachers at Title I Broward County Public Schools are invited to shop free, twice a year, for their students and classrooms. When BEF recognized that fewer teachers from Flamingo Elementary in Davie were visiting the Pompano Center due to the distance, they decided to deliver $12,000 worth of school supplies to the school instead. “Young people in need at Flamingo Elementary now have the tools they need to succeed,” said Christina Fischer, Chair of Broward Education Foundation. “We are committed to equipping students for success and there is a great need for school supplies throughout the year in our district’s Title I schools.” This is the first year that the mobile unit, which is only two years old, visited Flamingo Elementary. Some of the supplies they delivered included backpacks, pens, pencils, composition books, erasers, highlighters, and more. Very often, teachers at the Title 1 school use their own money to purchase supplies for the students.

“With the addition of our mobile unit, we’ve increased our ability to serve those teachers and schools that do not have easy access to our Tools for Schools Broward center in Pompano Beach,” said Fischer. Since opening its doors nearly seven years ago, donations to Tools for Schools Broward center have benefited almost half a million students and teachers. In partnership with Kids in Need Foundation, local businesses and community leaders, Broward Education Foundation facilitated the distribution of more than $1.5 million in essential supplies for students attending Broward County Schools. “With the recent influx of students from storm-ravaged areas, basic school supplies are needed more now than ever,” said Frank Mandley, Tools for Schools Broward Committee Chair. “We accept donations throughout the year. Glue sticks, pencils, pink erasers, notebook paper, two-pocket folders, and 100-page composition books are in short supply and high demand.” A $50 cash donation will fill an entire backpack with much needed school supplies. In addition, supplies can be dropped off at Tools for School Broward center at 2300 West Copans Road in Pompano Beach. Birth Control Pills May Do More Harm Than Good BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP

omen considering taking birth control pills have to seriously study their options and evaluate the pros and cons. Knowing “why” you are taking “the pill” is also important. Although intended to prevent unwanted pregnancies, some women use birth control pills to regulate periods, stop periods and control PMS symptoms such as cramping, heavy bleeding and acne. However, it is important to note that just like any other drug, birth control pills used for this purpose are putting a patch on the symptoms, but do absolutely nothing to address the underlying causes. If you have ever filled a birth control prescription, you probably have noticed there is a very long disclaimer with the explanation of possible side effects and complications that may arise from taking these pills. Some of the possible side effects include depression, weight gain or weight loss, headache, potential increased risk of breast cancer, stroke and heart attack, among others. These pills are made with synthetic hormones that will change the way your body functions. Birth control pills are very effective in controlling pregnancy, because the synthetic hormones trick a woman’s body into thinking she is already pregnant and does not need to ovulate. The pill stops the ovaries from releasing eggs and thickens the cervical mucus, which keeps sperm from getting to the egg. Women take a cycle of pills loaded with hormones for about 21-24 days followed by a cycle of placebo pills or “off” days. Women are still able to experience menstruation monthly because of the “off” pills that create a sudden drop in estrogen levels. However, this is not a natural cycle—it must be noted that your body is being loaded with man-made hormones that mimic the behavior of estrogen and progestin. A natural cycle has high and lows when it comes to hormone levels. The pill keeps women at a high level of estrogen all month long. Another category of pills known as “progestin-only” will eliminate monthly periods so that women only have about four periods a year. Although it sounds convenient, it is important to consider the health implications. Some doctors have deemed these drugs “safe and effective,” while others recommend their patients avoid them. Dementia: More Than Just Memory

hen people hear Alzheimer’s, they usually think about memory. Does the person remember her family? Does he remember where he lives? But Alzheimer’s disease, as well as other forms of dementia, impact more than memory. Because Alzheimer’s is a disease of the brain, there are many other aspects of a person’s life that are affected. A person with dementia often losses the ability to recognize objects, faces, sounds, colors, and/or smells. This is known as agnosia. The damage in certain parts of the brain because of dementia is the cause of this. A person with dementia does not necessarily forget what a cup is. But instead, the eyes see the cup but the brain cannot process that it is a cup. A mom could tell you her daughter’s name and describe what she looks like. But when she sees her, the brain is unable to process recognition. A dad could hear the phone ring, but interprets it as a siren. Communication is also a common aspect of life that is impaired because of dementia. This loss of ability to understand or express speech is called aphasia. Not being able to call a fork a fork is not necessarily because the person forgot that it is a fork. The person may see it as a fork and know what it is used for, but the brain is unable to formulate the right word. Other signs of aphasia include substituting the intended word with another word, using made up words, and having difficulty putting words together. Aphasia does not only affect how the person expresses himself, but also in the ability to understand written and/or verbal communication from others. It is not uncommon for a person to lose the ability to read. Even when they are able to grammatically read the word, there may not be comprehension of what was read. Also, understanding what others are saying or asking could be difficult. This is especially true when there is too much information provided at once or when there are too many outside distractions. There are also changes and deficits in physical ability due to dementia. Completing physical tasks due to a disconnect in the brain is known as apraxia. This can be seen in everyday tasks, such as dressing, brushing one’s teeth, and even walking. The person could feel the button of his shirt and have the dexterity in his fingers to button the shirt. But the message the brain is sending is disconnected from the rest of the body. When you ask the person to stand up, he may understand you and have the physical capabilities, but his brain is unable to send the messages needed to make the movements happen. Caregivers sometimes interpret this as the person being stubborn or resistant. Unfortunately, agnosia, apraxia, and aphasia can all be impacting the person at the same time at varying levels. It is important to understand that an impairment in one area does not necessarily mean the same level of impairments in others. educing this one item from your children’s diet can have the greatest single effect on their dental health! When the former mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, created policy to reduce the number of ounces in a large soda sold in his city’s restaurants, he was criticized by some for violating their human rights. The amount of press that this situation received not only illustrates the degree of political divide in this country, but also the love of Americans for their favorite bubbly beverage. It is estimated that between 50 and 80 percent of children in the United States consume at least one serving of soda per day. Some of these children are consuming multiple servings. Just as concerning as the high frequency of soda drinking are the large quantities. For example, the average serving size of soda in the 1950’s was 6.5 ounces. The average size currently is 20 ounces. As we will see, both the increased frequency and quantity of soda consumption have a negative effect on oral health. To understand why we have singled out soda, it is important to consider the factors contributing to the creation of dental caries (or cavities). In order to have a cavity, there needs to be certain cavity causing bacteria in the mouth and an acidic environment. This acidic environment allows for weakening of the surface of the teeth and the eventual colonization of the interior or the tooth by the bacteria. Sweetened soda contains “simple” sugars, which are easily broken down by oral bacteria. The byproducts are acidic and lead to the weakening of the surfaces of teeth. What about non-sugared or diet soda? As it turns out, carbonation itself is very acidic having a similar negative effect. Here are a number of strategies to reduce the effects of soda and acid causing foods in general. ▸▸ Limit or possibly eliminate soda from our diets. Get into the habit of drinking water. Juice and milk have sugar as well. So, try to limit their consumption to meal times. ▸▸ Rinse. If soda or any sugar foods are consumed, rinse with water afterwards. Water is very good at neutralizing the acidity levels in the mouth. ▸▸ Read the ingredients. Stay away from foods whose first one or two ingredients is sugar. ▸▸ Use topical fluoride regularly. Topical fluoride hardens the surface of the enamel and helps to reverse the effects of the acids. Fluoride can be gotten from toothpaste, rinses, and professional application. An alternative to fluoride is xylitol. Its mechanism of action is different than fluoride, but research of its frequent use is promising. ▸▸ Set a good example. Children are very impressionable and will model most behaviors observed by the adults in their lives. We try to be practical when making recommendations to our families. We do not stress the total removal of all sweet food/drink from the diet. However, following the advice above and common sense strategies can make a significant change in our oral health. If 100 families want to move into an area, but there’s only 20 homes, then prices will rise because demand is higher than supply. On the other hand, if there were 20 families and 100 homes, prices would fall because supply is greater than demand. Because real estate doesn’t move, brokers unfortunately can’t import real estate from another area to keep prices stable.” Another fact: People gravitate towards coastal areas which drives the prices up. The Economy: Since Trump entered office, the United States has entered the lowest unemployment in recent history. According to the government’s Current Population Survey: Payroll employment rose by 261,000 in October; unemployment rate edges down to 4.1% Low unemployment and a strong economy spur people to get into the real estate market, which raises the demand. In the same token, when sellers see prices rising, they tend to hold on to their properties. Timing the Market: Current sellers in Florida may be experiencing lower property taxes (if they have owned the properties for some time PLUS the homestead exemption). Sellers may also have lower interest rates. Some Sellers looking to buy another home before placing their current homes on the market may suffer from sticker shock – and compare their current homes to what they could buy – which could be another deterrent for Sellers to list. Baby Boomers vs. Millennials: Realtor.com surveyed the public only to discover that 85 percent of baby boomers are reluctant to sell in the next year — and desire to remain in their current investments. Millennials are ready to buy. With our strong economy and rising prices, boomers are holding on. Entry-Level Buyers: Millennials are looking for entry-level housing. Of course, these are the tightest of markets. Because of the school impact, it is difficult for builders to get permits unless they promise more schools. With improvements to the South Florida Building Code, new construction is not as “economical” as it once was. Will This Market Ever Slow Down?: No one knows. During the “bubble,” many homeowners walked away from their homes after drowning in their predatory loans. These “walk-away” homeowners realized the equity they walked away from and are not ready to re-enter the real estate market. This is a contributing factor to the shortage Regardless, buyers need to “jump in” – even if it means not getting everything on their “wish lists.” Build the equity, sell, then move on up! IT IS THE POLICY OF THIS STATE TO ENCOURAGE THE PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF DISPUTES AND THE EARLY RESOLUTION OF PENDING LITIGATION THROUGH A VOLUNTARY SETTLEMENT PROCESS” The above quote is from the Florida Collaborative Law Process Act. It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique nonadversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation.” There are some definite rules that must be followed and not every case is suited for the collaborative process. “As part of this nonadversarial and voluntary resolution of disputes, lawyers who engage in the collaborative law process in a family law matter, and any other lawyers in that lawyer’s firm, may not afterwards represent any party in any related proceeding except to request that a court approve the settlement reached during the collaborative law process or in specified emergency situations in accordance with family law court rules.” As stated above, if for some reason the collaborative process “breaks down” and litigation becomes the only alternative, the collaborative attorney must withdraw from representing his/her client. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. The goal of the collaborative process is for both parties and their respective attorneys to act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances there are other “team members,” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and, therefore, the parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” on more than one occasion. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process; each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery; and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney,” there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. get around parental control platforms. Motivated teenagers can be quite clever. An interesting example of this is my own experience with a great app called Life360. Life360 allows parents to get real-time information about their kids’ location, cell phone use and travel habits (e.g. were they speeding). My kids don’t like this app because it drains battery life. One afternoon, I was wondering where my teen son Justin was. I clicked on the Life360 app, pulled up the map, and there he was, in Pyongyang, North Korea! In reality, Justin was two blocks from home playing basketball, but he had very quickly figured out how to “spoof” his phone’s GPS; something I am quite sure I will never know how to do. Whether parents like it or not, our society is never going back to a time where young people use personal electronic devices less. The entire global culture has quickly evolved with the mobile phone at its center. Experts agree that the best way to keep kids safe online is the combination of parental controls, mindful oversight and, most importantly, engagement with children. retha Franklin said it best when she sang about the importance of being shown a little respect. We all know the foundation of a strong relationship is built on this important quality. It’s even more important when it comes to law enforcement and how we interact with people in all the diverse communities we serve. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that the Broward Sheriff’s Office is launching the Respect Campaign. Beginning this month, and running throughout the year, our Respect Campaign will highlight all the ways BSO’s dedicated men and women in law enforcement, detention, fire rescue and civilian positions build stronger community connections and the many ways we work to get even better. Throughout the year, we will share stories through our social media platforms on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as on our website at www.sheriff.org, showcasing the interactions and people who make a huge difference in ways both big and small. Stories that highlight BSO’s respect for our profession and respect for the communities we protect. The people who go above and beyond. And the daily interactions with our community’s children – and the acts of compassion that go a long way – in ensuring the safety and well-being for all. We’re also taking the opportunity to look at how we can improve and become even more responsive to the needs of Broward County’s two million residents and many visitors. As part of the effort, we developed a new internal training video that stresses the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect – and how it produces lasting, positive benefits. We’re also seeking feedback from members of our community to help us get even better. After all, listening—truly listening—to others and using their views as meaningful guidance is one of the most sincere forms of respect. This Respect Campaign is the next advancement in our Uniting Broward initiative, BSO’s key community outreach effort which actively unites Broward’s vibrant and diverse community groups across racial, religious, ethnic, cultural and sexual orientation boundaries, to make Broward a better and safer place to live, work and raise a family. As a law enforcement officer for nearly 40 years, I quickly learned that treating everyone with the kindness and respect they deserve produces massive results. That’s why I’ve made community policing a cornerstone of my belief system and have made it a priority during my time at BSO. Far too often we focus only on the small number of bad people, when we should also be focused on the 99 percent who are good people. These are the people that can and will make a difference, and help us make Broward even safer. If you treat people with respect, they are more likely to approach law enforcement with tips or seeking help for a problem before it spirals out of control and becomes a public safety issue. he Florida League of Mayors and the Florida League of Cities are sponsoring a statewide essay contest titled “If I were elected Mayor . . .” A required subject taught in all Florida public middle schools, civics education is vital to encouraging meaningful public participation. This contest is offered to all seventh-grade students in public and private schools and the information has been shared with the schools this week. This year, we are encouraging the students to learn about, and write about, home rule and how it affects their city. Entries must be postmarked by January 19, 2018. Essays will be judged by a committee comprised of members from of the Florida League of Mayors Board of Directors. Three statewide winners will be selected. Winners will receive a joint resolution from the Florida League of Mayors and the Florida League of Cities which I will present at a council meeting in Davie.
