81st Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo Offers Family Fun BY DEBBY TEICH

his month, the Town of Davie will celebrate its unique heritage and roots as an agricultural community. Approximately 15,000 people are expected to attend the Town of Davie’s 81st Orange Blossom Festival, Parade & Rodeo. The event kicks off on Friday, February 23, with the James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic, from 1pm to 5pm, at the Davie Golf and Country Club, 8201 Nova Drive. Later that evening, there will be a free concert at Old Davie School Historical Museum, 6650 Griffin Road, from 6pm to 9pm. The Festival will be held on Saturday, February 24, from 9am to 6pm, and Sunday, February 25, from 9am to 5pm. Admission is free. “I have not missed an Orange Festival celebration, since I moved to Davie more than 30 years ago,” said Linda Harrison. “I attended as a child and now I bring my own kids. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate Davie’s heritage with friends and neighbors. Each year gets better and better!” The Orange Blossom Festival will feature more than 250 displays and will take place down Orange Drive, from Davie Road west to S.W. 66th Terrace. Free activities for both days include an arts & crafts show, fine arts show, musical entertainment, “Cowboy Town,” Native American display, animal farm, western carriage display, commerce corner, information displays, and green product displays. There will be free concerts on Saturday and Sunday as well. There will also be a free kids’ corner that includes inflatables, activities, and vendors. The theme for this year’s parade is “Rockin’ Through the Years.” The parade will begin at 10am on Saturday and will proceed down Davie Road between Orange Drive and S.W. 39th Street. More than 80 floats, marching bands, youth groups and others are expected to participate. Awards will be presented to the parade winners after the parade.

Food will be plentiful all weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be an oldfashioned Strawberry Festival at the Davie Woman’s Club, 6551 Orange Drive. Fresh strawberries and homemade shortcake will be served, as well as other strawberry creations. Just like in the old west, guests can also purchase fresh home-grown vegetables and fruits at the old fashion farmers market. There will also be a large food court with everything from burgers and fries to gyros available for purchase. Family entertainment will take place on both days throughout the festival. In addition to the free concerts on Saturday and Sunday, visitors will also have an opportunity 2017 Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo to see an authentic rodeo on Saturday at 7:30pm, and Sunday at 2pm at the Rodeo Grounds, 4271 Davie Road. Real cowboys and cowgirls from around the world will compete for championship titles as they challenge 2,000-pound bulls, ride bare back, wrestle cattle, barrel race, team rope, and more. Festival, Parade and Rodeo Parking will be available behind Davie Town Hall and can only be accessed via Davie Road. Parking on the festival grounds is $5 per vehicle. On February 23, the Town of Davie will present two events to kick off the Festival – a free concert and the James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic. From 6pm to 9pm, everyone is invited to attend the Orange Blossom Kickoff Concert at the Old Davie School Bandshell, 6650 Griffin Road. The event will include a bounce house, petting farm, vendors and food and beverage sales. Bring your blankets and chairs and enjoy dinner, as well as some live music. Admission is free. During the day, the Davie Golf and Country Club will be hosting the 6th Annual James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic, which benefits the Davie Summer Youth Golf Program. The format will be a 4-player scramble with a 1pm shotgun start. The event will feature team trophies and prizes, course contests, and lunch and dinner for participants. Competition is open to players of all skill levels and handicaps. The entry fee is $500 per team or $125 per individual. The annual camps are conducted by the professional staff of Greenway Golf, which manages the course for the Town of Davie. Davie’s Junior Golf Camps are open to boys and girls, age 6 to 17, who want to learn the fundamentals of the sport. No experience is necessary and clubs are provided to children who don’t have their own set. Each camp provides ten hours of professional instruction, plus fun, games and lunch. More than 20 Cooper City couples are expected to celebrate the holiday by renewing their vows during the “Say I Do…Again” ceremony on February 8, at 6pm, at City Hall. Couples must pre-register in person by February 6 at the Pool and Tennis Center. The event is for Cooper City couples and their guests. Some come to celebrate their first anniversaries, while others come back every year and plan their Valentine’s celebration around it. “Renewing your wedding vows at ‘Say I Do...Again’ is a perfect way to reaffirm your commitment and devotion to the one you love,” said Chris Garcia, Recreation Director for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “Join us for a special way to start the Valentine weekend.”

As each one is called up individually to “walk the aisle,” some of this information is shared with others at the event. Last year, couples also played a version of the Not-So-Newlywed Game. Everyone was asked a series of questions and each person gave the answer they thought their partner would. Some of the questions were: “Who would your partner say is the better driver?” and “Who would your partner say is a better kisser?” Each couple also got to take home their very own cake curtesy of Elite Cake Creations in Cooper City. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. Cooper City 5K Richardson Run and Fitness Walk Celebrates 37 Years BY DEBBY TEICH

n February 11, runners and walkers will gather for the 37th Annual Cooper City Richardson 5K Run/Walk and One Mile Run/Walk at the Cooper City Sports Complex. “This event is a great opportunity to promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle as we continue to support health initiatives to keep our city’s status as a Healthy Weight Community Champion,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the City of Cooper City.

The timed 5K Run/Walk begins at 8am. It starts and finishes at Cooper City Sports Complex and takes participants on a course through a residential neighborhood. Join in the Fun at the Mayor’s Countywide Chess Challenge BY DEBBY TEICH

hess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning and development, especially when it is played

from a young age. On February 17, chess players of all skill levels and ages are invited to participate in the Mayor’s Countywide Chess Challenge, from 9am11am, at the Pool & Tennis Center, 1600 Stonebridge Parkway in Cooper City. Hosted by the City of Cooper City, the event will include Mayors, elected officials

and community leaders throughout Broward County. “Cooper City is very excited to participate in the Countywide Chess Challenge,” said Chris Garcia, Director of Recreation. “Chess introduces critical thinking skills, which are very important for any age.” The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is a free program designed to bring attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in the community. The challenge is held in collaboration with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation and several other municipalities in Broward County. Over 100 kids and parents typically attend. It is an opportunity for school-aged children to exercise their minds, as they compete against elected officials and one another. From 9am-10am, volunteers will be available to teach the basics to beginners. Each month, the challenge rotates to different cities in the area. Recent challenges have been held in Parkland, Coral Springs, Dania Beach, Coconut Creek

and Weston. Kids get a passport that gets stamped for each month they attend. Many of the students are members of elementary, middle and high school chess clubs throughout Broward. Last year, she was one of four students that received the 2017 Broward League of Cities’ Scholarship for Government Studies in the amount of $1,000. The deadline to submit scholarship applications for 2018 is February 16. Rina graduated from Nova High School, where she was president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the South Asian Society and an ambassador for the Elephant Sanctuary, a 2,700-acre refuge in Tennessee. She also interned with Congressman Ted Deutch on his Congressional Youth Cabinet. She intends to study Ethics, Politics, Economics and Political Science and has a career goal of going to law school and becoming a member of Congress. The Broward League of Cities will award $1,000 scholarships to four outstanding high school seniors who plan to pursue a major in public administration, political science or other government-related field. Applicants must demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills. Applicants must submit one essay, one personal statement, two letters of recommendation and a high school transcript. SAFEWALK-RUN 5K Participants Take Steps to End Domestic Violence BY DEBBY TEICH

ore than 1,000 community members, including corporate teams, student organizations, individual walkers, runners, and their furry friends will take steps this month to raise awareness about domestic violence and to raise funds for programs and services that Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. offers free of charge to victims of domestic violence in our community. This year’s goal is to raise $135,000, which can provide 1,500 nights of safe shelter for adults and children affected by domestic violence. Presented by Ultimate Software, the 19th Annual Women In Distress SAFEWALK-RUN 5K, will be held on February 24, at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. Registration is now open. “Women In Distress saved my life,” said Melissa Stern of Davie, who received help from Women In Distress when she was experiencing the effects of domestic violence. “My friends and family had no idea of the horror I was enduring. Whether you participate as a runner, walker or spectator, please walk with me and support this important event. I cannot think of a better way to spend a Saturday.” Women In Distress is the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County. Its mission is to stop domestic violence abuse for everyone through intervention, education and advocacy. It

offers a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter program, individual counseling, support groups and professional trainings which are aimed at educating the community on domestic violence. Seventy percent of domestic violence victims report not leaving an abuser due to fear of what will happen to the family pet, so they often stay. Dog registration fees go toward providing services for pets of domestic violence victims to alleviate a barrier to leaving. The fun event will kick off with a warm up, followed by timed race for runners and a more leisurely stroll for walkers, strollers and dogs (on leash) at 9am. Top finishers will receive awards. SAFEWALK participants will enjoy a complimentary breakfast and T-shirt. Kids can enjoy a variety of fun activities and everyone can visit local vendors in the vendor village. Participants can walk or run in honor of those affected by domestic violence. Domestic violence survivors will be cheering on walkers and runners along the route and also walking alongside supporters celebrating the brave steps they’ve taken toward a new violence-free life. February is also Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and information on domestic violence will be available for all participants. A registration fee is required in order to participate. Eagle Scout Completes Project at Old Davie Schoolhouse BY DEBBY TEICH

ighteen-year old Ethan Richards of Davie is on his way to sharing a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. He recently received his Eagle rank from Troop #128. Ethan joined the Boy Scouts of America when he was in first grade and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as completing an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. He got the idea for his project after talking with Leslie Schroeder, Director of the Old Davie Schoolhouse. She suggested a variety of projects and his was on the list. Ethan constructed two large boards suspended by wooden columns with a metal roof overhead. His project is now used to pin papers and maps that have detailed information about the surrounding area for people that are on the walk-

ing tour of the museum. “My Eagle project taught me how difficult it can be to juggle financing a project and meeting a deadline at the same time,” said Ethan. To fund the project, Ethan reached out to friends and family who donated over $1,400. The construction took approximately one week. His parents, as well as four scouts from his troop - Brandon Owen, Richy Bury, Nick Wagner and Devin Dolan – helped him complete the construction. They dug threefoot holes, inserted the wooden columns and steadied them with cement. Next, they built the roofs and lifted them into place on the columns. Lastly, the bolted in the roof and front boards and painted the structure. Ethan’s Scoutmaster, Rick Putman, and Assistant Scoutmaster, Robert Johnson, were also instrumental in helping him earn his Eagle rank. After the project was completed, Ethan presented it at a Town of Davie Council Meeting. Ethan will graduate from high school this year and plans to study fine arts. He intends to stay involved with the troop, helping with projects and events.

I Care I Cure to Host 11th Annual 5K Walk/Run & Family Fun Day BY DEBBY TEICH

hroughout the year, the I Care I Cure (ICIC) Childhood Cancer Foundation helps raise awareness and funds for cutting edge research

and better cures for childhood cancer. On February 11, runners and walkers of all ages will gather at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, for the 11th Annual I Care I Cure...I Run 5K & Family Fun Day, Mile Run of Color Fun and the Corporate and Student Team Challenge to raise awareness and funds for the foundation. Last year, more than 2,000 participants attended the event, which is ICIC’s largest fundraiser. The race raised over $176,000. It has continued to gain momentum and registrations are already ahead of last year. The 5K Run begins at 8am. The walk/run is open

to adults and children and welcomes both serious and casual competitors. It features a race course and commemorative medals for race category winners and youth participants.

I Care I Cure also hosts a second race, the Mile Run of Color Fun, when participants wear white t-shirts and run a mile while experiencing a deluge of safe, nontoxic, color. This component of the race is open to children and adults. Registration for the Color Fun is only available to 5K or Mile Color Run participants. Businesses and students are encouraged to form teams and compete in the Childhood Cancer Challenge. As soon as teams register they can earn points by getting sponsors, hosting jeans days, bake sales and other fun ways to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research.

Since its inception, ICIC has funded more than $1.6 million in research projects both locally and throughout the United States. ICIC was founded in honor of Ian Besner of Davie, who passed away at the age of 11 from the effects of treatments used to combat leukemia. This year’s course will take participants past the Ian Besner Baseball Field at NSU, named in his memory for his love of baseball. “My family and I have known the Besners for many years and have supported I Care I Cure since inception,” said Gavin Kahn, who is co-chairing the event with David Kubiliun. “No family should have to experience a loss of a child, especially when the death is due to treatments that were used to fight cancer.” Advance registration for the 5K Run/Walk is $25 for adults, $20 for children; race day registration is an additional $10. The Mile Color Run registration is $25 for adults, $20 for children or a $10 add on fee for runners registering for the 5K. Actors Community Theatre of Davie Presents “Four Weddings and an Elvis” BY DEBBY TEICH

his month, Davie residents can experience live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will be presenting “Four Weddings and an Elvis,” a comedy by Nancy Frick. Performances will be held at the Davie Pine Island Multipurpose Center on February 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 8pm, as well as February 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 2pm. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. “Four Weddings and an Elvis” will be directed by Jim Doan and Erin Craddock. It is a story about characters in a Broadway-bound play who resort to manipulation, diva-like behavior, and chaotic abandonment to get their way. The dilemmas these crazy characters encounter are the things theatrical nightmares are made of. Cast members include: Erin Craddock, Brenda Fernandez Aulbach, Mihaela Zaharescu, Larry Chidsey, Brian McCormack, and Bill Fragetta. ACT Board members are actively involved in every production. They include: Dana Fredebaugh (president), Bonnie Ladich (VP/producer), Fern Katz

The game will raise money for the James & Lindsay Layer Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships to Cooper City High School athletes. The game will be held on March 7, at 7pm, in the Cooper City High School gymnasium. Tickets are $5 per person. The scholarship was started in memory of two siblings who graduated from Cooper City High School. Both were athletes who died at the age of 19 in separate automobile accidents. A Whiter Brighter Smile BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

s I sit down to write this article, I am trying out a new tooth whitening product which we are considering for the practice. We have reviewed the research provided by the manufacturer, have listened to paid experts who lecture on its behalf and have read over the instructions provided for use. Still the last test is personal. The doctor has become the patient. There is no doubt that cosmetic dentistry has become a big part of public demand over the past decade. The surprising part is that the market has opened up to a younger population. We are asked more and more about the appropriate time to consider dental bleaching for children, as well as the effectiveness of over-the-counter products. Let’s first examine the downside/side effects of bleaching. The most commonly documented side effect is sensitivity. This can be from sensitivity of teeth or gum tissue, but is usually the later due to an ill-fitting tray. The good news is that sensitivity goes away after the bleaching product is discontinued. The second most common side effect is leakage of the margins of a present restoration. What this means is that it may shorten the lifespan of a filling or crown. However, well prepared/ fitting dental work would tend to be less affected. What then is the benefit of a professional system versus an over-the counter system (OTC)? The main difference between the two is the concentration of the active ingredient, which is carbamide peroxide in most cases. Professional systems work faster, make teeth whiter, and results tend to last longer. OTC systems are more accessible and are usually less expensive. In my opinion, the most important part of the process, no matter which system is used, is making whitening part of the dental treatment plan. For example, whitening may have no effect on specific teeth which were previously traumatized. Whitening in this situation may make the traumatized tooth/teeth more noticeable due to the increased contrast with other teeth after bleaching. Additionally, if you are planning new dental work, it may make sense to whiten the teeth before choosing a shade for your new dental restorations. The reason is that when whitening your teeth, dental restorations will not whiten with your teeth. For these reasons and many others, a discussion with your dentist may save you heartache and possibly money in the long run. Parents often point out a concern that their child’s front teeth are darker than back teeth. In children between the ages of 7 and 12, this is usually due to the contrast between baby teeth and permanent teeth. Baby teeth are typically lighter in color by multiple shades. The reason for this is differing thicknesses of the layers of the teeth which reflect light differently. Bleaching teeth at this stage is not advised, because this would create a situation in which there will be more noticeable contrast each time a new tooth erupted. In fact, we recommend waiting until all baby teeth fall out before considering whitening. From the vantage point of the dental professional, we are looking for a product that whitens teeth effectively and lasts as long as possible. It should cause only minimal sensitivity (hopefully none) and have an easy delivery system. On that note, I will excuse myself to remove my trays and check out my new shade. Drs. he reality of a dissolution of marriage is that no matter how “uncontested” it might seem, there is a cost for attorney’s fees. Each attorney bills an hourly rate and requires a retainer or a “down payment” to begin representation. I am always asked, “How much will this case cost me?” My response is always the same – it’s impossible to know for sure, since fees are based upon the time an attorney spends on a case. The more complex the case, the more the fees. The more litigation, the higher the fees. In reality, the clients and not the lawyers have control over how much a dissolution will cost. So, what if you are for example a stay at home parent and your spouse is the one who is your sole means of support? How does someone who does not have an income afford representation? Florida law provides for those types of circumstances. Pursuant to Florida Statutes, an individual can request the court to award attorney’s fees from his/her spouse based upon a number of factors. The law states: “A trial court may from time to time, depending on the circumstances surrounding each particular case award a reasonable attorney’s fee after considering the financial resources of both parties.” This provision is based upon ability of one spouse to assist in the payment of fees, as well as the need of the requesting spouse. Since a divorce proceeding is a proceeding in equity, the court is required to consider basic rules of fairness and equity. Therefore, each party should have the same right of representation, regardless of their earning potential. In order to achieve this equity, the court will under certain circumstances require one spouse to contribute to the other spouse’s fees. Since Florida is a no fault state, the court will not take into consideration as a factor who initiated the proceedings. In addition to the financial resources of each party, other relevant circumstances can be considered by the court. These include the scope and history of the litigation between the parties, the length of litigation and the merits of each party’s position in the case. In addition, the court can consider whether the litigation brought by one party has been done to primarily harass the other party. Or whether one of the parties has been attempting to delay or frustrate the proceedings. In other words, unnecessary or unreasonable litigation may cause that person to pay for wasting the courts time.

n 1982, 12-year-old Andre Agassi and his doubles partner, Roddy Parks, won the National Indoor Boys 14’s Doubles Championship in Chicago, IL. Less than a year later, he was shipped off to Nick Bolletieri’s Tennis Academy in Bradenton. He would go on become one of the greatest tennis players in history. Agassi famously trained exclusively for tennis from a very young age and reached greatness. Most of our children are not prodigies like Agassi. Many however, face pressure to specialize in a sport at increasingly younger ages. The emergence of club teams and travel sports combined with a prioritization of excellence over participation and the year-round warm weather of South Florida makes this trend even more pronounced here than in other areas of the country.

Different Strokes for Different Sports…

Does Specialization Make Someone a Better Performer? Author Malcom Gladwell famously coined the “10,000-hour rule.” This “rule” is an adaptation of an old theory about chess masters. It suggests that becoming a master requires around 10,000 hours of dedicated practice and training. Gladwell applied this theory to life more broadly: to become a true expert takes a lot of hard work! Proponents of sports specialization have adapted this theory: if a child shows an aptitude for a sport, having them focus on this sport early sets them on a path to attaining those 10,000 hours, becoming great and potentially gaining a college scholarship.

Sports Specialization: Should Kids Focus on What They are Best At? A 2013 study by the National Institute of Health suggests, however, that timing may be what matters most. The study’s conclusion states “Some degree of sports specialization is necessary to develop elite-level

skill development. However, for most sports, such intense training in a single sport to the exclusion of others should be delayed until late adolescence.”

Health Risks There are essentially two types of sports-related injuries: traumatic injuries and overuse injuries. Overuse injuries are typically caused when a person does the same physical motion over and over, causing wear and tear. Playing a single year-round sport significantly increases the risk of these types of injuries. Dr. James R. Andrews, founder of the Andrews Institute for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has become an outspoken critic of specialization. “I have seen my patient population and surgical cases get increasingly younger. Children, parents and coaches need to realize that kids need to take a break from

The benefits and timing gained from specializing vary significantly by sport. Sports where athletes tend to be elite at a young age favor earlier specialization. Parents of star gymnasts or tennis players often contemplate home-school their children to maximize training time. According to a 2016 NCAA survey, almost nine out of ten college gymnasts said they had specialized by the age of 12. Other sports had far less pronounced benefits and trends toward specialization. Football players, for instance, had the lowest levels of high school specialization. In fact, every touchdown scored in this year’s NCAA National Championship Game was scored by an athlete who played multiple sports throughout high school. Interestingly, none of them play any other sport while in college. In fact, multi-sport collegiate athletes are extremely rare.

Should You Make the #1 Sport the Only Sport? Specializing in a single sport at a young age is a bad idea. A study that tracked young athletes between 1990 and 2011 concluded, “For most sports, there is no evidence that intense training and specialization before puberty are necessary to achieve elite status. Risks of early sports specialization include higher rates of injury, increased psychological stress, and quitting sports at a young age.” For High School kids, it’s a bit of a different question. Sports participation like theater or art or music are as much about a teen’s self-identification and pursuit of happiness as they are about pursuing excellence. Being good at something is important to selfesteem and makes that activity more fun. So, if your 14-year-old daughter wants to drop Basketball to focus on Volley Ball, tell her to go for it! With many improvements, the new sheriff.org is keeping a lot of the features you love, but we redesigned the website to make it cleaner to navigate and easier on the eye – and we added a plethora of beautiful photographs. More importantly, we are making it far more user-friendly and easier to find what’s important to you. With one click, visitors to our website can do everything from requesting a report, to filing a commendation or complaint. You can also visit our crime mapping feature that allows you to track where crimes are occurring nearby (and keep tabs on registered sex offenders and predators living in your neighborhood). We are also making it far easier to find information about your local BSO district offices, civil procedures and our jails. Looking for a job? Look no further than the top of the homepage to discover all the amazing opportunities available at BSO and even apply online from the comforts of your own home. And, yes, we are hiring. Our commitment to connect better with the diverse communities we serve continues through our webpage, where we added features intended to unite and strengthen Broward. Now, users can easily keep on top of upcoming BSO events, such as shred-a-thons and grocery giveaways that visitors might not otherwise know about. You can find our calendar of events featured prominently on our homepage. We also added a tab on the website where you can read about BSO’s signature community outreach initiatives, including Uniting Broward, bodyworn cameras, community policing and civil citations. Of course, protecting our communities and keeping us safe remains our primary mission. Through our new community resources link, we are constantly adding educational brochures and information on a variety of public safety topics, including how best to protect yourself from identity theft, sexual assault, burglary and bullying. You can also find vital public safety tips and messages in the featured video section on our homepage. ’m sure you are aware by now that the end of February is one of my favorite times of the year, as we host the Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade, and Rodeo. The year 2018 marks the 81st Orange Blossom Festival and my 44th year participating in the Orange Blossom Parade! The three-day Festival will kick off with a free concert at the Old Davie School House from 6pm – 9pm on Friday, February 23rd. On Saturday, February 24th, the parade will begin at 10am and travel south down Davie Road from SW 39th Street to Orange Drive. This year’s parade theme is “Rockin’ through the Years.” We would love to have you in the parade and welcome your entries. Contact the Parks Department at (954) 327-3941 for an entry form. There will be some new rules and entry requirements due to security measures, so sign on early and get all your information.

The festival is scheduled from 9am – 6pm on Saturday, February 24th and 9am – 5pm on Sunday, February 25th. As always, the Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo will take place at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds where cowboys and cowgirls compete in competitions that include bull riding, bareback riding, cattle wrestling, barrel racing, and team cattle roping. The Rodeo will begin at 7:30pm on Saturday, February 24th and 2pm on Sunday, February 25th. Join us in Cowboy Town for a great weekend full of fun and great entertainment! Our Fire Chief, Julie Downey, wants to remind everyone that a special program, “A Safe Haven for Newborns,” is dedicated to reaching pregnant teens and women of all ages before they reach the crisis stage. They assist them as the moms make their decision in the best interest of their baby and themselves, whether with counseling, parenting, health related issues, adoption or confidentially placing their newborn with a “Safe Haven.” Call the confidential 24/7 & Multilingual Florida Helpline: 1-877-767-2229 or National Helpline: 1-844-767-2229. The Safe Haven Law is a safety net for both the mother and the newborn infant. It allows mothers, fathers or whoever is in possession of an unharmed newborn, approximately seven days old or less, to leave them at “Safe Havens,” any hospital, staffed 24/7 Fire Rescue Station, or Emergency Medical Service Station, with no questions asked - totally anonymous and free from fear of prosecution.
