SPRING CELEBRATION! OurCityMedia.com

“We swore we weren’t ready for senior living. Then we saw The Palace.”

Jack & Evelyn Miller

“We were stunned. We stayed in the Four Seasons in Paris once, and The Palace in Weston looked better. Ten minutes after we walked in the door, we realized we had never seen senior living like this. Everything you can think of is at your fingertips. Chef-prepared meals in the dining room. A social director who makes cruise ships look dull. A staff trained to deliver such a high level of care and comfort they’ve been named #1 in America. Everywhere you look, it’s 5-star all the way. But you need good friends to share it with. Our crowd at The Palace are some of the best new friends we’ve ever met, and every single one of us will tell you: ‘We wish we had found The Palace sooner.’ ”

The Palace at Weston is taking reservations. Now is the time to visit our spectacular Weston Leasing Center at 15951 SW 41st St., Suite 500, Davie, FL 33331.

Don’t fret about your colonoscopy, new prep is easier to swallow When your doctor says it’s time to schedule a colonoscopy, do you start thinking up excuses to put it off? You may be concerned about unpleasantness and inconvenience as you prepare for the exam. But it’s time to stop worrying – the prep process is much easier these days. Yes, one of the keys to a successful colonoscopy is the “clean-out” beforehand. But improvements – in the liquid you drink, the amount you must drink and the timing – make the whole process easier to swallow. Regular colonoscopies can save your life Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancerrelated deaths among men and the third leading cause among women in the United States. Most patients who develop colon cancer have no obvious risk factors. “The colon, itself, is a risk factor,” says Su Bin Kim, MD, a gastroenterologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston main-campus. Bowel residue polyps are a Su Bin Kim, MD precursor for cancer, and they can be overlooked if the colon lining is not clear of solid and liquid. “Many people fear drinking the laxative prep to cleanse the bowel more than the colonoscopy itself,” says Dr. Kim. But it’s a key part of the procedure. Three steps for a good prep: • Cut out fiber. Two days before the exam, start a low-fiber diet.

• Switch to clear liquids. The day before the procedure, consume only clear liquids. “It’s important to keep patients hydrated and flush the prep through the intestinal tract,” advises Dr. Kim. “The clear liquids aid in that process.” • Start the prep. Start the prep. Many physicians today prescribe a split-dose regimen, where half the prep is taken the night before and the other half in the morning. But, if the exam is in the afternoon, the prep is taken the morning of the colonoscopy. A better-tasting solution “The liquid bowel-cleansing agents now taste better and less of the liquid is consumed. This means that the prep is, quite literally, easier to swallow,” explains Dr. Kim. Those two factors, combined with the split-dose approach, improves the experience for patients. Regular colonoscopies can detect colon cancer early on. It’s important to follow your physician’s screening recommendations. To schedule a colonoscopy today, call 800.639.DOCTOR.

For an appointment with Dr. Kim or another Cleveland Clinic digestive specialist, call 800.639.DOCTOR or schedule online at ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Digestive today. Cleveland Clinic Florida accepts most major insurances.

I could figure out what I did and didn’t understand and then review it in the private lessons. Taking classes the summer before Junior year and finishing tutoring by December was a huge relief!”

Everybody Counts in Census 2020

T

his month we will all be part of history. The 2020 Census will be the first to be completed online, but there are options to complete by mail or even phone if you prefer. By definition, a census is an official count or survey of a population. Our Constitution calls for an “actual enumeration” to be completed once a decade. The first census was taken in 1790. It included the original 13 States, plus the districts of Kentucky, Maine, and Vermont, and the Southwest Territory (Tennessee). The 1790 enumeration asked for the name of the head of the family and the number of persons in each household of the following descriptions: free white males of 16 years and upward (to assess the country’s industrial and military potential); free white males under 16 years; free white females; all other free persons; and slaves. Census 2020 will ask questions such as the number of people living or staying in a home on April 1, 2020; whether the home is owned with or without a mortgage, rented or occupied without rent; and the name, sex, age, date of birth and race of each person in the home. When filling out your census it is important to include every person living in the household, regardless of age, citizenship or immigration status. Your responses are confidential and protected by federal law. The Census Bureau cannot share responses identifying individuals with the public or other federal agencies, including immigration authorities and law enforcement. The results of Census 2020 will have a direct impact on our communities, so it is critical that everyone is counted. Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states, counties and cities each year for things such as health care, fire departments, school funding, and even construction of roads and highways. Census data also determines our political future by determining how many seats in Congress each state gets and legislative districts. Please keep an eye on your mailbox this month and be sure to take the steps to complete Census 2020. Your community is counting on you being counted. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Everybody Counts in Census 2020 BY STACEY BOMSER

I

n the coming weeks, every household will receive a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau with instructions on how to complete the 2020 Census. For the first time ever, the census questions will be available online, however there are also options to complete the census by phone and mail if you prefer. It is critical that every household respond and count every person living in the house, regardless of age or legal status. The census is safe, secure and protected by law. Under Title 13 of the U.S. Code, the Census Bureau is bound to keep your information confidential. It cannot release any identifiable information about you, your home or your business to any law enforcement agency, government agency, or court. The census answers you provide are used only to produce statistics and are kept confidential and sealed for 72 years. Both the Town of Davie and City of Cooper City are spreading the word to all residents that participation is critical to ensure the communities receive their fair share of more than $1.5 trillion in federal funding annually. Money for things like first responders, Medicare and Medicaid, Pell Grants and Federal Direct Student Loans, public transportation, food assistance programs, school lunch programs, foster

care and adoption assistance, and so much more. “Our residents, businesses, schools, farms and healthcare programs are dependent on the results of the census for this funding,” explains Davie Intergovernmental Affairs Manager Leona Henry. “As a family-oriented community, this impacts us firsthand. We only get this opportunity once every ten years to show how much our population has grown and diversified. We must get 100% participation throughout the Town. Shaping our future starts now, it starts here, and it starts with you.” Cooper City is sending a similar message to its residents. According to City of Cooper City Public Information Officer Lisa Thomas Emrekovic, “An accurate population count in the Census is crucial to ensuring that the $1.5 trillion distributed each year for the next ten years is allocated appropriately. An undercount can cost millions of dollars over the next decade. Let’s make sure that everyone in Cooper City is counted only once and in the right place!” In order to make that happen, Cooper City is mobilizing a Complete Count Committee, comprised of volunteer residents, trusted local voices within the community and city staff to educate and promote Census 2020. Davie is also promoting total

participation. It’s crucial that our communities convey the message that every single person needs to be counted. An undercount in the 2010 Census cost Broward County approximately $21.1 million per year over the last decade. According to the US Census Bureau, 14,600 residents were not counted. That means Broward lost out on money that could have funded additional transportation projects, healthcare programs, social services and more. To learn more about Census 2020 and what it means to your community, Davie residents can visit www.davie-fl.gov/1209/ Census-2020 and Cooper City residents can click on the Census 2020 #CooperCityCounts tab on the city’s website at www.coopercityfl.org.

Cooper City formed its first CERT team in 2007. There are currently about 50 trained and active CERT volunteers, with five more volunteers completing the Basic Training Class this month. “The curriculum provides education and training in the areas of disaster preparedness, first-aid, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster psychology and terrorism,” explains BSO District Fire Chief Bruce Caruso. “Many other advanced training courses are offered

New Barrier Free Program Improves Accessibility for Davie Residents BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Town of Davie is offering a new Barrier Free Program, improving accessibility for lowincome elderly residents using wheelchairs. This is the newest addition to Davie’s State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) offerings. The program’s goal is to improve accessibility to elderly residents who are 62 years and older in need of wheelchair ramps on mobile homes that are windstorm rated. “This program has a tremendous opportunity to assist those in need,” said Glenda Martinez, Community Services Manager. “It will improve accessibility to low-income elderly residents, and hopefully their quality of life. It’s just another thing that makes Davie so special.” Funding is limited and applications will be processed on a first come, first qualified basis. To quality, each applicant must meet income guidelines, which are based on household size and household income limits determined by the Broward County Area Median Income Limits chart. The grant amount will be based on the amount of assistance needed for installation or replacement of a windstorm rated wheelchair ramp and cannot exceed $9,000. All work

specifications will be bid out to the Town’s pool of contractors. The lowest, most responsive bidder will be awarded the project. Applications will be taken through April 1st or until funds run out. According to the Community Services Division, which oversees this program, of the Town’s allocated funds, a minimum of 20% will be set aside for special needs households with first priority given to persons with developmental disabilities. Second Priority will be given to other eligible persons with special needs. Low and very-low income households may also be eligible. Properties eligible for the Town of Davie’s SHIP Barrier Free Program are solely mobile homes. The Barrier Free Program is coordinated by the Community Services Division. It provides a holistic approach to neighborhood revitalization, housing assistance, and community development projects that build or expand infrastructure; upgrade public facilities; upgrade the existing housing stock; expand home ownership opportunities and affordable rental housing; and promote economic development that will enhance the tax base as well as the health, wealth and safety of a geographic designated area.

2020

This is not the first housing assistance program offered to Davie residents. The Community Services Division had previously accepted applications for the First Time Homebuyer Program and Home Repair Program. Both of those SHIP-funded programs are currently unavailable. If you are interested in applying for the Town of Davie Barrier Free Program or Wheelchair Ramp Program visit the Community Services Division website at https://www.davie-fl.gov/606/3337/ Community-Services. Completed applications must be dropped off at the Community Services Division Office located at 4700 SW 64th Avenue, Suite D. It is open Monday through Friday from 9am-4pm. For more information call the Community Services Division at 954-797-1173.

Founder’s Day at the Park Will Offer Fun for All BY JOHN DUKA

R

esidents and friends of Cooper City are invited to the annual, all-day Founder’s Day celebration on Saturday, March 14th. This year’s 61st birthday event will celebrate the achievement of Morris Cooper’s vision. The businessman dreamt of turning orange groves and swampland into the stable and beautiful community we know today. Cooper was the epitome of the American dream. He was born in Kiev Ukraine and came to the United States with just one suit and $45 in cash in his pocket at the age of 18. Over the following 35 years, he turned that $45 into the Imperial Shirt Company, which he sold in 1958 for $3.5 million. Not one to rest on his laurels, Cooper put much of that money into developing Cooper City. The festivities will begin bright and early, at 7:30 am, with a 5K color run supporting the Relay For Life. The race will take place at Cooper City High School. Little ones are invited to take part in a one-mile-distance race if 5K feels a

bit far. Runners are invited to enjoy a fresh pancake breakfast immediately following the race. The 61st Founder’s Day Parade will kick off at 10:30 am sharp. The Parade will travel down 90th

The remaining Founder’s Day events will take place at the Brian Piccolo Park (9501 Sheridan Street). Afternoon activities are expected to begin at 1:00 pm. They include an Antique Car Show, Arts & Crafts vendors, Bounce Houses and a demonstration by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Live entertainment will be on hand all day long, culminating with a fireworks show around 8:30 pm. Residents are encouraged to bring picnic items and comfortable chairs to enjoy the music and fireworks. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Hail to the Champ: South Florida’s Sophia Kenin Is on Top of the Tennis World BY TERRY JAILLET

Pembroke Pines’ Sophia Kenin took the tennis world by storm by winning the Australian Open. In doing so, she became the youngest Women’s Grand Slam winner since Serena Williams won at Wimbleton in 2002. “These past two weeks have been a lot of emotions. It is just such an honor. I am cloud nine right now.,” commented Kenin during the post-match press conference. The 21-year old sat in front of a throng of reporters with a glass of champagne in her hand and a beaming smile.

Kenin won seven consecutive matches on her way finds time to visit her South Florida home. We can’t to holding the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup above wait to welcome her back with open arms. her head. In doing so she establisher herself as the next American Great in the tennis world. Her path to Melbourne Australia began 16 years ago as a five-yearold tennis prodigy. Sophia, the child of Russian immigrants, moved with her family to Broward County in order to work with super-star coach Rick Macci. Macci new what he had early on. Expectations were high from the very beginning. She dominated the South Florida junior tennis circle for a decade. “Back then, I came right out and said Sofia was the scariest little creature I’d ever seen,” Macci is quoted by the New York Times as saying, “It was unique: the hand-eye coordination and her ability to take the ball immediately right after the bounce. I have a lot of kids do that, but it was almost like it was baked in already, even though she was little and the racket was actually bigger than her. The only player I’ve seen like that is Martina Hingis.” Hingis would go on to be an all-time great. A status some see in Kenin’s future. Tennis is as close to a year-round sport as any professional endeavor. The season begins in January and lasts through the US Open in September. Kenin still

UF seeks high school student applicants for science summer program BY: JOHN DUKA

This summer, Florida high school students have the opportunity to experience college life at the University of Florida while learning how the agricultural, natural resource and life sciences impact their families and communities around the world. Rising high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for the Florida Youth Institute (FYI), a week-long summer program sponsored by the UF/IFAS College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) and The World Food Prize Foundation.

“I was empowered after attending FYI,” said Maria Duran, a 2019 FYI participant and a student at Cypress Bay High School. “During the program, we toured various facilities around UF, where experts are doing their part to improve food security in Florida and around the world. We were exposed to ways we can be part of the solution as well.” FYI participants will: • Engage in hands-on activities and demonstrations. • Experience indoor and outdoor laboratories and campus facilities. • Meet CALS Dean Elaine Turner, repre-

• • •

sentatives from FDACS, faculty, staff and current CALS students. Examine issues in agriculture, life sciences and natural resources. Experience one week in a campus residence hall. Reflect on worldwide challenges such as food security.

Applications to FYI can be found at www.cals.ufl.edu/prospective/fyi/ and are due Feb. 28. Cost of attendance to the program is $350 per participant. Applicants will have the opportunity to select one of the two camp weeks in July (week 1: 12-17 or week 2: 19-24).

SPRING BREAK ACTIVITY GUIDE

S

pring Break is just around the corner. Many people, from around the country, will soon visit the beautiful beaches of South Florida. Here are some spring break activity ideas for those of us already lucky enough to live here.

Staycation at a Local Hotel One of the most exciting parts of traveling is staying in a new place, especially for kids. One thing South Florida has an abundance of is great hotels. Families that don’t have the time or finances to travel during Spring Break can get most of the benefits while staying close to home. Families can choose from multi-star resorts like the Margaritaville Beach Resort or find something a bit less expensive off the coast. Mid-week overnight prices won’t kill the budget either!

Everglades Airboat Ride Give the kids the thrill of a lifetime while riding on an airboat through the untouched landscape of the Everglades. You will get to see some of Florida’s most exotic wild life including, of course the American Alligator. For more info contact Everglades Holliday Park at 954-434-8111

Treating Ankle Fractures (Broken Ankle) BY MICHAEL M. COHEN, DPM FACFAS

A

nkle fractures are common injuries in people of all ages and lifestyles. They may occur during any sport involving a twisting or jumping motion such as football, basketball, ballet, and running. They may also occur as a result of a motor vehicle accident, slip or fall from a height. People (particularly post-menopausal women) with osteoporosis may be susceptible. When one breaks an ankle, they have fractured one or more of three bones which make up the ankle. If treated improperly the injury could lead to long term disability. The ankle joint is made up of the tibia (shin bone), the larger of two bones in the lower leg and flares out at its lower end forming a knob on the inside of the ankle called the medial malleolus and another flare in the back known as the posterior malleolus. The smaller of the two bones in the leg is the fibula and flares out on the outside of the ankle to form the lateral malleolus. The tibia and fibula rest on the talus, a wedge-shaped bone connecting the foot to the leg. Think of the ankle as a room with three sides and a roof. The tibia forms the roof, the medial malleolus

(inside wall) and posterior malleolus (backside wall). The lateral malleolus forms the outside wall of the room. Ligaments connect these structures together to guide movement and assure stability. If a major ligament such as the Deltoid or Syndesmotic ligament is torn the ankle is generally considered unstable. A syndesmotic tear may involve a fracture of the fibula near the knee (Maisonneuve fracture). A lateral malleolar ankle fracture is the most common, and bimalleolar (lateral and medial) the second most common. When all three sides are fractured (medial, lateral and posterior) this is known as a trimalleolar fracture. As the number of fractures or level of impact increases so does the risk of long-term damage to the joint. Ankle fractures may be nondisplaced (in correct position) or displaced (misaligned). High velocity fractures are known as Pilon fractures and have the worst long-term prognosis. X-rays of the ankle and knee are required to diagnose an ankle fracture. More advanced imaging such as CT or MRI is often necessary to determine the extent of injury. Treatment is based on the alignment and stability of the ankle with the goal being to heal the fracture(s) as close to perfect as possible. A displacement of two millimeters or more may result in long term problems. Unfortunately, arthritis may develop even when the ankle has been placed in good alignment because of the irreparable damage done to the bone and cartilage at the time of injury.

Not all fractures require surgery. Simple nondisplaced fractures may be treated with a cast or walking boot. More severe injuries require surgical reduction using specialized plates and screws. Patients may be required to remain non-weightbearing for a period of four to six weeks depending on the severity of the fracture followed by therapy. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, is a BoardCertified Foot and Ankle Surgeon and Diplomate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and Board Certified and Diplomat of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. Providing for Minor Children More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE re you a parent with minor children? If you are, your days are busy and your life is full. Probably the last thing you want to imagine is the possibility that someday you may leave for work in the morning, and not return. Who will take care of your children if something happens to you? Have you ever thought about a will or trust? Perhaps that’s something you’d consider when you’re older. You’re young, healthy, and, of course, you plan to be around for a long time: to see your children finish college, to walk your daughter down the aisle, to grow old with your spouse or partner and to play with your grandchildren. But we are reminded on a daily basis that life doesn’t always go as planned. I am often reminded of one of my favorite John Lennon lyrics, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” from his song, “Beautiful Boy.” The song was written for his young son, Sean. And, in the same year, the song was released, tragedy struck. Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York apartment. Life doesn’t always go as planned. As an estate planning attorney, I frequently see the sad consequences of a family facing an unexpected death, made even more difficult when minor children are involved. Does having an estate plan lessen the pain of an expected loss? Of course not. But it does take some of the burden off surviving family members: difficult decisions have already been made, priorities set, helpers designated.

A

Contact Us Today

954.885.0085 An important component of a parent’s estate plan is addressing issues regarding the upbringing of your children. What happens if both parents die simultaneously, or within a short duration of time? A contingency plan should identify the persons you’d like to manage your assets, as well as the guardian you’d nominate to finish raising your children. In many instances, you may purposely designate different persons to deal with your money and your children so as to maintain a system of checks and balances. You don’t want the probate court deciding who will manage your finances or to guess whom you’d prefer to raise your children. Other issues to consider are whether you’d like your heirs to receive an inheritance directly, or whether you’d prefer to have the assets placed in trust. Funds from a trust can be distributed based on a number of factors that you designate such as age, need, and/or even incentives based on behavior and education. All too often, children receive substantial assets before they are mature enough to handle them properly, with devastating results. Most importantly, give careful thought to your choice of guardian, ensuring that he or she shares the values you want to be instilled in your children. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

Timing of Tooth Eruption BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

O

ne of the most common anxieties parents share with us concerns the timing of the eruption of teeth. We are often asked: “When are the first teeth scheduled to enter the mouth?” or “Which is ‘better,’ late vs. early erupting teeth?” The truth of the matter is that although there are published milestones, there is still a normal variation/range that teeth may be expected to erupt. In terms of which is better, there is no real benefit for early or late eruption. However, extreme deviations may cause a practical challenge as

we will discuss. Let’s start with the primary (or “baby”) teeth. The first primary tooth to erupt is usually the lower central incisor between 5-8 months of age. The teeth will then follow the “rule of twos,” which is that two additional teeth will erupt every two months until around 2-2.5 yrs old. There is a total of 20 primary teeth equally divided between upper and lower arches. After the eruption of the lower central incisors, we will see the eruption of the upper central incisors, the lower lateral incisors (as the name suggests, next to the central incisors) followed by the upper lateral incisors. The pattern will continue from center laterally with the lower erupting earlier than the upper counterparts. Premature eruption of primary teeth occurs in 1:2000. This can occur in two ways. “Natal” teeth are present at birth and “prenatal” teeth erupt in the first 30 days of life. When teeth erupt prematurely, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider (pediatrician or pediatric dentist) as strategies for feeding will need to be addressed, especially if breastfeeding is planned. There are also structures which are present at birth which resemble premature teeth, but are actually not the primary teeth. One of the most common examples of this is “Epstein pearls.” They are visible cysts located in the upper arch in the front close to where the primary teeth are expected to be positioned. There is no treatment recommended for this as long as there is no interference with feeding and no observed discomfort for the child. As with all published milestones, it is important to acknowledge the fact that these are just averages and that “normal” has a range. We find variation in gender, with females being ahead of males. It is also important to note that deviations in one area may have no bearing on others. For example, there are many children who are either “ahead” or “behind” in dental development, but are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in skeletal growth. They do, however, give us an idea of what to plan for and some guidance on timing of interventional treatment, whether dental or orthodontic, when indicated. The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. AWARDED 9 YEARS

The Collaborative Process & the Flat Fee Option BY FERNANDA PEDROSO, ESQ. hen meeting with potential clients seeking advice related to their family law issues, I find that they are anxious about two main points: 1) how their case will be resolved and 2) how much the total cost will be. I always explain that how much a case ends up costing is directly linked to how long it takes to resolve their case. While most family cases deal with similar issues— division of assets, financial support for a spouse (alimony)and/or child support and the accompanying parenting plan addressing timesharing—not all families have the same dynamic. That difference in family dynamic is what can cause one case to reach a resolution in a short period of time with little exposure to litigation, and another case to drag on for what feels like an eternity, which often results in court intervention. Naturally, the more time a case is pending, the more likely it is that it is financially costing the client.

This is why when an attorney first meets with a client, there is no way for the attorney to predict what the true dynamic of the case is, nor how it will play out in the arena of traditional litigation. It is for that reason that most attorneys do not charge a flat fee in traditional litigation—because of the unknown and unpredictability that lies ahead. However, in the Collaborative Process the concept of attorney’s fees can be different than in traditional litigation. Not only because the Collaborative Process promotes a more peaceful and amicable alternative to litigation; but also, because it provides parameters that promote more predictable timeframes and makes way for a more efficient resolution of a case. This predictability affords attorneys practicing in this area of family law the opportunity to offer their clients a flat fee option. The flat fee offered will often depend on various factors, such as the complexity of the case which takes into account aspects such as: the length of the marriage, the need for financial support between the parties, the level of assets/ liabilities in existence, and whether there are minor children requiring matters such as timesharing and child support to be addressed. Ultimately, clients appreciate this option when it is available because it allows them to know not only that there is a light at the end of the tunnel but also where the end of the tunnel is located. If you or anyone you know is interested in the Collaborative Process and the flat fee option, reach out to our office and we can further assist you. n The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Positively Disrupting Medicine by Using Innovative Solutions BY ALEX A. MAYER, MBA-HSA raditional medicine is progressively polarizing to over-specialization and rigidity that neglect treating patients as intelligent and sensitive partners. Increasingly, patients are looking to be heard attentively and to be closely involved in their healing process. This is not the case today since normally patients are extensively and unnecessarily tested at a very high cost and seldomly addressing root cause issues, resulting in symptomatic drug administration and dependency. For the past 18 years, Bellissimo Medical approached this conundrum differently, by listening to our patients’ concerns carefully and engaging their efforts to identify primal causes that lead to illness. We evaluate our patients in detail for common sense causes of ailments such as hormonal imbalance, nutrition, vitamins, minerals, micronutrients deficiencies, lifestyle stressors, toxic elements exposure, etc. Only then with the whole picture, we design a plan to start the healing process of body and mind, step by step, helping the miraculous human body’s ability to heal itself naturally. This works amazingly well, especially for the treatment and cure of devastating common chronic diseases.

But more importantly, our patients quickly return to their normal enjoyable life. We are committed to this positive disruptive approach because we know it works since we have experienced a 90% rate of returning patients, as well as an increasing number of international patients and traditional medicine doctors showing up on our schedule. How Buyers Sabotage Their Home Purchase – Part I BY ZONA HORTON pring is here, and so is the home-buying season. Buying up furniture for your new home and taking that bucket-list trip to Europe before closing as well as buying the new family car or changing jobs are just a few of the errors buyers often make. Through the years, I have counseled my buyers about the following: 1. Unrealistic expectations. Looking and waiting for that “perfect” home is not realistic. It is difficult enough when a Seller expects to get multiple, over-the-list-price offers; however, buyers often think they are the Seller’s answer to prayer. In South Florida, we have been experiencing a “seller’s market” in most areas – especially single-family homes since 2012. Champagne tastes may not match your pocketbook. Pick two main items that are the most important to you – perhaps a large kitchen and an ample back yard for entertaining.

S

42 MARCH 2020 | OUR CITY DAVIE | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

After all, it’s a house that can be altered. 2. Hesitation. If the home has matched your “wish list” for the most part, act on it. Otherwise, you will compare this home to all the others – once it is under contract – with another buyer who chose not to hesitate – which brings us to No. 3. 3. Comparison – the fish that got away. The market could pass you by as home prices have been rising for the past several years. Even though the mortgage rates have remained steady, why take the chance. Prices and interest rates tend to rise quickly. 4. Majoring on the minor. Every home has flaws — both new construction and resales alike. There is a difference between major defect issues and things that can be lived with, changed or improved. In this HGTV era, homes are transformed in a thirty-minute segment. There are smarter choices to focus on – which bring you the greatest joy while you are living in your new home and bring you the most return on your investment when it is time for you to sell. (See costvsvalue.com.) Buyers who quibble, criticize and question every little detail in a house risk losing out (See item No. 3). A bucket of paint is not only cost-effective – it can cover a myriad of sins.

Some issues can be negotiation opportunities with the sellers. Focus on the positive features that may be more difficult to change – such as the view -- and less on that which can be easily changed – such as the wall color. Don’t major on the minor. 5. wWe’re looking . . . we’re looking . . . we’re looking . . . Along with hesitation and quibbling over the minor, buyers can “look too much” or “overlook” which leads to overlooking the potentials. It is easy to move into “information overload” and emotionally shut down. This could lead to you making an offer on any random home which could also lead to buyer’s remorse. Next month I will alert you to more of these sabotaging practices. An experienced Real Estate agent can help you avoid these sabotaging behaviors so that a favorable outcome is in your not-so-distant future. ASK THE MAYOR

Davie Update BY MAYOR JUDY PAUL ebruary was Black History Month and I remember when teaching American History I always included individuals of importance in my lessons. I did this by integrating stories throughout the year that emphasized contributions to our nation. Like a lot of early inventors, Benjamin Banneker was primarily self-taught. The son of former slaves, Benjamin took over the family’s tobacco farm when he was 15. He invented an irrigation system to control water flow to the crops from nearby springs. In addition to inventing a clock made entirely out of wood parts, Banneker accurately predicted a 1789 solar eclipse. In the early 1790s, Benjamin compiled and published his Almanac. Jefferson recommended Banneker be a part of a surveying team to lay out Washington, D.C. and was appointed to the three-man team by President George Washington. When the lead architect quit– taking all the plans with him, Banneker saved the project by recreating the plans from memory. Dr. Charles Drew was a physician, researcher, and surgeon who revolutionized the understanding of blood plasma – leading to the invention of blood banks. At the onset of World War II, Drew was called upon to put his techniques into practice. He emerged as the leading authority on mass transfusion and processing methods and went on to helm the American Red Cross blood bank. When the Armed Forces ordered that only Caucasian blood be given to soldiers, Drew protested and resigned. One of the most prolific Black inventors ever was Frederick Jones who patented more than 60 inventions in his lifetime with most of them in the field of refrigeration. Jones is most famous for inventing an automatic refrigeration system for long haul trucks and railroad cars. Jones won the National Medal of Technology and is an inductee of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Sarah Breedlove aka Madame C.J. Walker became the first female AfricanAmerican millionaire by inventing a line of cosmetics and hair products aimed at black consumers in the first decades of the 20th century Davie is proud of our latest award. The Florida Green Building Coalition was formed in 2000 and is the leading certifying agency for green building within the state of Florida. To date, 78 Local Governments have participated in the Green Local Government program. The Green Local Government program creates an environment of communication and coordination amongst different departments. This collaboration streamlines processes, decreases redundancies, and generates new approaches toward sustainability and resource preservation. Its success emanates from the fact that there is a sizeable & compelling return on investment for any municipality thus reducing the cost to taxpayers. The green certification program scores the town in terms of categories. These categories include: Energy efficiency, Water, Economic Development, Tourism, Emergency Management, Planning and Zoning and many more. In each category, there are points that can be achieved. Some highlights from the Town of Davie include: • Adopt a green standard as official minimum criteria for government buildings • Employ green landscaping procedures for local government buildings • Require recycling at all local government buildings • Educational materials to encourage recycling program participation • Offers Incentives for Green Redevelopment • The Town of Davie achieved points, earning the Silver-level designation. The Town of Davie is always improving our green practices and was well prepared to accomplish this new certification at the Silver Level. We are pleased that we were recognized for all our efforts to create a sustainable, resilient, and environmentally responsible community.

ASK THE SHERIFF

Honoring The Women Of BSO BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY y aunt was a police officer for the city of Philadelphia. I didn’t know it then, but she was a trailblazer: a proud woman in a job historically carried out by men. There have been many brave women in law enforcement who have paved the way toward progress, and we are still moving forward. The Broward Sheriff’s Office employs many women who have dedicated their lives to making a significant impact both on and off duty. I am proud of these women and the countless contributions they make to our com-

M

munities every day. As we celebrate National Women’s History Month, I’d like to introduce just a few of the women who serve within BSO. Colonel Nichole Anderson is a woman of many firsts. The Fort Lauderdale native graduated from Dillard High School in the top 10 percent of her class and has been a fixture in our community ever since. She joined BSO in 1996 and rose through the ranks. In 2011, she became the first African-American female district chief. In 2018, she became the first female BSO law enforcement deputy to attend and graduate from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia graduating from the 274th session. In January 2019, I had the distinct pleasure of promoting her as the agency’s first-ever female colonel and, most recently, she was promoted to serve as the undersheriff, which marks the first time a female has held this position in the Colonel Nichole Anderson agency’s 105-year history. Colonel Anderson’s commitment to selfless service and integrity allowed her to succeed in what was traditionally a male-dominated profession. It’s an honor to have her serve as second in command. It’s also an honor to work with individuals such as Deputy Kelli Covet. Along with her trusted canine partner, Macie, the dynamic duo have dedicated countless hours to search for and locate missing and endangered people, including children and the elderly. Aside from being a certified bloodhound, in June 2019, K9 Macie became the agency’s first-ever certified therapy dog. The work Deputy Covet and K9 Macie do each and every day makes a significant difference in the lives of people throughout the community. Aside from their daily first-responder duties, they regularly attend countywide events to build lasting connections with the community and assist people who may be experiencing crisis, tragedy, trauma or who are having a difficult time in life. Deputy Kelli Covet & Macie

Detention Deputy Judie Nance is a woman with a variety of hidden talents. Her daily responsibilities are to provide for the care, custody, and control of inmates in our jail system; however, in her spare time, she is an author. Her first children’s book, “Short and Virtuous Bedtime Stories for Children,” helps parents introduce children to the essentials of good moral character: responsibility, courage, honesty, perseverance, faith, and friendship. Her second book, “Enlightened,” teaches young girls to stand up for what is right. Both in and outside of work, Deputy Nance demonstrates compassion and commitment for Detention Deputy Judie Nance all that she does. Fire Prevention Officer (FPO) Cindy Taffel is the epitome of determination and perseverance. She loves her job, but she also loves to express herself through food. A three-time cancer survivor, Cindy understands that life is too short not to do what you love. She not only loves cooking but is an award-winning prodigy. With no formal training, Cindy took home the World Food Championship in seafood and later won the $15,000 prize on the Food Network show Cooks vs. Cons, where she beat out a formallytrained chef. FPO Taffel is an inspiration to us all. Claudine Carter Pereira, the director of the BSO Crime Lab, proves you can be and do anything you want if you put your mind to it. The 21-year year BSO veteran leads an internationally-accredited crime lab that processes approximately 25,000 cases each year. But she’s known Fire Prevention Officer Cindy Taffel to her co-workers as the “Forensic Ballerina.” A former professional dancer with both a ballet and modern contemporary company, Director Pereira studied at the premier Joffrey Ballet in New York City. When’s she’s not helping solve cases or dancing on her own, she serves as a dance instructor to local children and adults.

Claudine Carter Pereira

As you can see, BSO is comprised of some very unique, talented women. I want to thank all the women of BSO for their service and dedication to keeping our communities safe. Their special talents both in and outside of work are truly commendable. We all owe a debt of gratitude for everything they do.
