People Are People Wherever You Go
W
e have had the fortune to travel all around the world over the past twenty years. In fact, we have lived in the English countryside, in the urban mega-city of Hong Kong, in swanky Nashville, and in the suburbs of Atlanta. In addition to living in those places, we have visited many more, and seen people of all walks of life: from villagers in rural Thailand to wealthy Europeans vacationing in the Canary Islands. What has been remarkable, throughout our travels, is not the differences we share, but how surprisingly similar people truly are. Don’t get us wrong, there are certainly differences in culture everywhere. A dining delicacy in one country is often considered gross, or worse, in another. However, most people we have met have been primarily focused on the same few values: a safe, peaceful place to raise a family; a sense of pride or validation in their endeavors or occupation; a source of relief from the stresses of our modern world; and belonging to a community. In an era where the twin pressures of globalization and technological innovation often push us in uncomfortable directions and division, it is helpful to remember that there is likely a family just like yours in Nairobi or Singapore or Tehran with ambitions and dreams not too different than the family right next door. In the end, people are people everywhere you go. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 4/30/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Laurie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Andrea or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at: WindmillHealth@att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

19th Annual Relay For Life of Davie/ Cooper City Helps Fight Cancer BY DEBBY TEICH
I
n the U.S. this year, there will be an estimated 1.8 million new cancer cases diagnosed and 606,880 cancer deaths. On April 27, hundreds of people who have been touched by cancer will gather from 6pm to midnight for the 19th Annual Relay For Life of Davie/Cooper City, hosted by the City of Cooper City at Cooper City High School. The family-orientated event is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. Anyone can volunteer, form a team, or join a team. “Relay For Life is an event to honor family and friends who have battled cancer,” said Rebecca Scrima, Davie/Cooper City event lead. “The event recognizes
our survivors and those who lost their battle to this dreaded disease. As we walk around the track and reflect, we are reminded of the importance of life, how precious it is, and how we must live each day with love, laughter and kindness.” This year’s event will have the same key elements as always, in addition to some new ones. It will still feature the traditional activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer, such as the Survivor Celebration Dinner (5pm), Opening Ceremony/Survivors Lap (6pm), Luminaria Ceremony (9pm) and Closing Ceremony (midnight). Teams will also have an opportunity to walk all night and are encouraged to dress up and decorate their campsites
in this year’s theme - “Party for a Cure.” The event also includes several activities for all ages. There will be live entertainment, dancers, dress up laps around the track, a scavenger hunt, celebrity/ sports personalities and more. In addition, there will be vendors selling jewelry, clothing, handbags, art and more. Twenty-five teams participated in last year’s event and raised $100,000. This year, organizers are hoping to have approximately 40 teams and raise over $150,000. Teams have already held a variety of fundraising events, such as Team Hawkes Bluff’s Mini Golf event; David Posnack JCC’s Yoga with a Purpose; City of Cooper City’s Color Run; Cooper City Optimist’s Quarter Option and much more. n For more information, register a team or sign up for a team, visit relayforlife.org/daviecoopercityfl, call Rebecca 954868-3366 or send an email to Trudy.Spence@cancer.org.

W
hen most Davie residents have an emergency, they call the Davie Police Department or Fire Rescue for help. They recently had an opportunity to meet and learn more about some of the people who serve them at the Town of Davie Police and Fire Expo. The annual event was held at the Public Safety Complex. “We look forward to the Fire and Police Expo every year,” Chief Downey said. “It’s always a fun day for all the Town’s’ residents to see us in action.” Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed several demonstrations from Davie’s Fire and Police Departments, including: Dive Team, Vehicle Extrication Drill, K-9, SWAT, Police Motorcycle Unit, and Rappelling. They explored the fire engines, rescue trucks, SWAT trucks, community response vehicles, the Crime Scene Unit, and other activities. Children had the opportunity to try on some of the fire gear, face painting booth was also available and children participated in the Home Depot Kids Workshop. Local and state agencies had tables and booths set up with information about Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), child fingerprinting, drowning prevention, Davie Crime Watch, and more.

Town of Davie Offers Free Training to Help Stop the Bleed BY DEBBY TEICH
B
lood loss is the leading cause of preventable death in multiple casualty incidents, like mass shootings or severe bleeding injuries. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. The greater the number of people who know how to control bleeding in an injured patient, the greater the chances of surviving that injury. The Town of Davie is offering the Stop the Bleed program, a national awareness campaign and call-to-action. The initiative is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. You can help save a life by knowing how to stop bleeding if someone, including yourself, is injured. In Davie, Stop the Bleed training is offered the first Wednesday evening of each month in conjunction with CPR/AED (cardiopulmonary resuscitation/automated external defibrillation) training. Classes are held at the Davie Fire Rescue Administration building, located at 6901 Orange Drive, from 6pm to 10pm. You may also request a trainer to come train your organization with a minimum of six participants. In addition, the Town of Davie has taken proactive steps to protect the public health, safety, and welfare of its residents by requiring Stop the Bleed Kits to be available at specific facilities throughout the Town. There are a number of methods that can be used to stop bleeding and they all have one thing in common—compressing a bleeding blood vessel in order to stop the bleeding. According to Stop the Bleed, the primary principals of Trauma Care Response include: ▸▸ Before you offer any help, you must ensure your own safety. ▸▸ The ABCs of Bleeding include: ▸▸ A – Alert – Call 9-1-1.
▸▸ B – Bleeding – Find the bleeding injury. ▸▸ C – Compress – Apply pressure to stop the bleeding using one of the following: ▸▸ Cover the wound with a clean cloth and apply pressure by pushing directly on it with both hands. ▸▸ Use a tourniquet. ▸▸ Pack (stuff) the wound with gauze or a clean cloth and then apply pressure with both hands. The Town of Davie also offers Adult, child, and infant CPR/AED (cardiopulmonary resuscitation/automated external defibrillation) training the first Wednesday of each month. This comprehensive course includes: airway obstruction/choking; how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies; how to use an AED on an adult; infant/child and adult CPR and Rescue Breathing. The course fee is $30 for Town of Davie residents and $35 for nonresidents. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over the past decade. In 2018, it was estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Leonardo Oliveira, MD, sports health and running medicine specialist, to answer key questions about Leonardo Oliveira, MD running, and how runners of all types can prepare.
Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons.
Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Oliveira in Coral Springs or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida sports health specialist, call 800.597.2037 or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth to schedule online. For more information about Cleveland Clinic Florida Sports Health, visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth.
Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.

Find a New Furry Friend at the Dog Adopt-A-Thon BY DEBBY TEICH
A
re you looking to give a furry friend a forever home? If so, don’t miss the 3rd Annual Dog Adopt-A-Thon, sponsored by the Cooper City Recreation Department and the Cooper City Teen Council on April 13, from 10am1pm. Approximately 100 furry friends will be looking for loving homes. The event will be held at Memorial Park, located behind the Community Center and City Hall. “It’s a great one-stop-shop,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “There will be a lot of local rescues, so you will be sure to find the perfect four-legged friend for your family.” The Adopt-A-Thon will have small meet-and-greet areas, where guests can play with the dogs to see if they are a good fit for the potential owner’s lifestyle. It will give them an opportunity to bond with the animals before making a selection. The event also includes all of the resources a new pet owner might need, such as local vets, groomers, pet stores and trainers. Organizers are still looking for groomers, trainers, vets and other animal services to participate. The dogs are coming from local rescues. They have already been vaccinated. Most can be taken home from the event. Some of the rescues require house checks, many of which can be done the day of the event for residents of Cooper City and neighboring communities. Adoption fees vary based upon the vendor.
2018 Dog Adopt-A-Thon
The Cooper City Teen Council consists of ten members that range in age from middle school to high school. This year, the teens helped coordinate a food fun project and card making at Light Up Cooper City, as well as the Color Run at Founder’s Day. “The Dog Adopt-a-thon helps to expose people to more shelter dogs and encourages them to adopt their pets, not purchase them from breeders or puppy mills,” said Savannah Schwante, who has been a member of Teen Council for three years. “There are so many animals that need a home. No matter how many get adopted at the adopt-a-thon this year, even just one animal getting a home will make a difference. Together we can help make Cooper City someplace special, even if it is just one adoption at a time.” “The Dog Adopt-a-thon is important, because there are so many dogs that need to be adopted and so many people that want to adopt dogs,” said Danielle Selevan, who has been a member of Teen Council for four years. “They just might not want to go to the rescue groups. Bringing this event to Cooper City helps people near or in Cooper City find a furry friend.” For information on becoming a vendor, send an email to ftrainor@coopercityfl.org or call 954-4344300, ext. #233. t’s finally that time of year in South Florida when it’s not yet too hot (and certainly not cold) for everyone to start enjoying some time outside of their homes. Outdoor spaces are quite popular and with so many items available online and in popular retail stores, creating an inviting space is extremely cost-effective and offers a relaxing environment for the entire family to enjoy.

First things first, it’s important to clean and declutter the area before adding a comfortable seating area. For décor purposes it’s recommended to blend the exterior with the interior by utilizing similar colors, materials, and styles; therefore, expanding a home’s living space. Including weatherappropriate pillows and rugs along with some lighting and perhaps a fire pit and/or a waterfall item will soften and create a tranquil atmosphere. After giving your patio some panache, enhance it by freshening up the landscape. Planting flowers, vegetables and herbs will add beauty, life, color, and fragrance to any patio, deck or balcony. Believe it or not many annuals need full sun and some fruit trees thrive in warm climates. But if you’re not ready to get your hands dirty just go to your local home improvement store and buy ready grown potted ones. The Bougainvillea is the queen of large flowering shrubs. The colorful year-round plant can be planted in a variety of ways such as a tree, on a vine, or in a planter making it work well in any area.

April Showers Bring May Flowers – Get Your Outdoor Space Ready for Spring! CONTINUED FROM P. 33
Pentas are one of the easiest flowers to grow in Florida. The low-maintenance blooms produce a rainbow of clusters which are irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds. Evolvulus, also called Blue Daze, always make a good choice for Florida gardens because it is drought tolerant. Mexican Heather has become a Florida garden staple with its shiny, dark green foliage accented with charming lavender-pink or white flowers. Let’s not forget Florida’s official state flower, the Coreopsis, it is one of the cheeriest plants to grow and can be enjoyed all year.
Wrap herbs in ribbon or create a special homemade infusion to bring the hostess when invited to a springtime soiree. Another favorite thing to add to the outdoor space for spring and summer entertaining are heat loving herbs like basil, tarragon, thyme, sage, and parsley. Not only are they great for recipes like gazpacho, but they make perfect garnishes and fun herb-infused vodkas too. Serve them up at all your parties or give them as gifts. With Memorial Day upon us, use some of these inspiring ideas for spending some time outdoors on those hot spring/summer nights. Regardless if you are entertaining or just relaxing under the stars, it’s easy and affordable to dress up your outdoor space.

Individuals with Special Needs Enjoy a Night to Shine BY DEBBY TEICH
I
ndividuals with special needs, ages 14 and older, were recently crowned kings and queens during the 5th Annual Night to Shine, which recreates prom night. It was an opportunity for them to make some new friends and enjoy an unforgettable night. The event was created by former NFL quarterback and current professional baseball player, and sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. Night to Shine 2019 was hosted simultaneously by 655 churches across all 50 states and in 24 countries. It included approximately 100,000 honored guests through the support of 200,000 volunteers. The Keyes Company supported the effort in Davie at the St. Bonaventure Catholic Church and School. With the help of 100 dedicated volunteers, they hosted 300 guests, including friends and family, and 150 were crowned kings and queens. All of the participants dressed up for the occasion. The ladies wore formal gowns and the men wore tuxedos, suits and ties. When they arrived, they were greeted and led to a private area. The women had their hair and makeup done and received corsages. The men had their shoes shined and received boutonnieres. Once they were ready, they boarded limousines that took them to the venue. They exited onto a red carpet, where the paparazzi greeted them with inspirational signs. In the ballroom, they were presented with their crowns
and tiaras. The evening also included a sit-down dinner, DJ, dancing and a photo booth. “It was an honor to be in a room full of prom queens and kings,” said Mark Sadek, District Sales Manager at The Keyes Company. “It was beautiful to see every person light up the room for a night of fun, friendship and giving back to the community. It’s a night we will all hold dear to our hearts.”

ASK THE EXPERT
Unexpected Cavities DR. MARIA MARANZINI-GROSMAN lmost daily, we have a child come in to our office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their six-month checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is helpful to look at the underlying causes of cavities. In order to form a dental cavity, there are certain ingredients which are a must. First of all, cavity causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus Mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time). The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Therefore, the main players are bacteria, sugar, and acidity. We recommend brushing and flossing to reduce the quantities of bacteria and remove sugars left behind after meals. Fluoride can be used to strengthen the enamel. Xylitol products are showing some promising data in the ability to limit the effectiveness of the bacteria. Still, a person who brushes/flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities depending on intake of certain foods and liquids. As it turns out, consumption of sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods and beverages we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. After a little digging, we usually find out that the unexpected cavities are preceded by the intake of acidic beverages. The bad news is that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium. Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats, but rather to modify eating habits and limit the periods of exposure to certain foods. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. We recommend rinsing with water after consuming acidic drinks as it is very effective at balancing pH. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. Snacks eaten between meals should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating!

FPL Hosts Western High School SolarCats At Daytona International Speedway BY DEBBY TEICH
F
lorida Power & Light Company recently hosted Western High School’s solar car racing team at the NextEra Energy 250 race held at the Daytona International Speedway. The trip included a tour of the infield and grandstand of the world-famous Speedway. The national champions brought the winning car that they designed, built and drove over 1,300 miles to victory last summer. The solar car was showcased in the FPL Solar Pavilion, part of the FPL Solar Circuit, which is one of the largest solar power installations in U.S. professional sports. “Being in the pit was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Jacob Bloom, team member. “We got to learn plenty of things that the pit crews and drivers do to prepare for big races and how we can apply them to improve our car and methods. We got a bunch of tips on our tools, including how to store them and use them better. It will really help us in the future.” The SolarCats team raced its solar car from Fort Worth, Texas to Palmdale,
California to win their division in the Solar Car Challenge in July 2018, beating out an extremely competitive field of specially selected high schools from across the country. The race lasted a total of 10 days. For the first three days, judges examined the car’s the mechanical layout, electrical systems, safety procedures and more to make sure it was qualified to participate. The rest of the days were dedicated to racing. The students woke up by 5am each day to prepare for an eight-hour day of racing. Western High was the only school accepted to compete from the state of Florida. “These kids exhibit a lot of teamwork and work well together,” said Alex Marron, team mentor. “Each one knew what their responsibility was and what they needed to deliver. They knew that if one of them failed, the rest of the team would fail as well.” “Solar energy is actually a lot closer than we think it is,” said Gabriella Lopez, team captain. “In the next 20 to 25 years, there will probably be some solar race cars. I will be very excited to see that.” The team will not be participating in the 2019 race, which will be a circuit race. Instead it will focus on building a new car to use for the Electric-Solar Division 2020 Cross Country race. n For information, visit www.TheSolarCats.com or send an email to Thesolarcats@gmail.com.

T
here is more to losing weight than just calorie control – seek professional help. If you’ve ever dieted only to gain weight back, know that you are not alone. In fact, a recent article from the American Psychological Association points out “weight regain is the typical long-term response to dieting rather than the exception.” There are many factors that contribute to this disappointing statistic. One you that you can tackle immediately that will enhance your chances of success is knowing and understanding what caused the weight gain in the first place. Most people think the answer is calorie restriction, but the truth is that cutting calories may or may not work for you. If the root cause is that you are consuming too many calories, then yes. But a calorie excess is not always the problem. Did you know there is also a possibility you may not be eating enough? Something else to consider is that as you lose and continue to lose weight, your body adjusts to the “new normal” by burning fewer calories. If you want to continue to see weight loss then you are forced to continue cutting calories to unhealthy and unsustainable levels. Similarly, if you have tried to cut calories and have not seen any weight loss, your problem could be unrelated to calorie consumption. There is a misconception that in order to be healthy, one must lose weight when in fact, sometimes the total opposite needs to happen. Some individuals need to optimize their health first, in order for their bodies to respond as expected and drop the pounds. One key area to look at would be your hormones. No matter how healthy, or how low-calorie your diet may be, you will not see the changes you seek if your hormones are not balanced. Hormones have a direct impact in maintaining the body’s ideal weight. An imbalance can make you more or less hungry than normal or can interfere with important bodily functions, that in turn, will hinder your weight loss efforts. We need to work with our body, not against it, if we want to change it. As you can see, when it comes to weight loss, there is much more to consider than just the amount of food you are putting into your mouth. This is why it is important to work with a functional medicine doctor who is not only looking to mask symptoms of disease, but prevent it by attacking the root cause, whether is is nutritional choices or other factors such as hormones or lifestyle. Even as important as being evaluated and given an individualized plan by a professional, is to continue working with them after weight loss to ensure your hormones and bodily functions are ideal. Keep in mind that weight loss can also stress the body and cause hormonal imbalances. If you are ready to turn your life around but don’t know where to start, we can help you at Bellissimo Medical, LLC. In the meantime, exercising regularly, consuming balanced and potion-controlled meals, managing stress and sleeping eight hours a night are all things you can do today to get you started. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. LEGALLY SPEAKING
When Will the Court Issue a “Restraining Order?” BY EVAN BARON am often questioned about the process involved in obtaining a “restraining order.” Many people believe that such an Order can be obtained if a husband and wife get into a verbal argument or if someone is harassing them. This is not true and Florida law is very specific as to the requirements needed to seek such an order. There is, in fact, really no such legal document as a “restraining order.” The Order that can be obtained is called an Injunction for Protection Against Domestic Violence. As the title suggests, this order is to protect someone from domestic violence, which is defined as any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member. The statute goes on to further explain that anyone who is either the victim of domestic violence or has reasonable cause to believe he or she is in imminent danger of becoming the victim of any act of domestic

violence has standing to seek an injunction. The basis for such an injunction therefore must be based upon either acts of violence or acts which would result in the other party having a reasonable belief that there was imminent danger of such violence. Conversely, injunctions will not be issued based upon harassment or threats which do not prove to result in imminent fear of harm. To obtain the Injunction, a sworn affidavit must be filed and presented to a judge. If the Judge feels that the evidence is sufficient, a Temporary Injunction will be issued. This will usually require the Respondent (the person who has the injunction issued against him/her) to vacate the marital residence and to have no contact, direct or indirect, with the complaining party. A hearing will then be held within 15 days, giving both parties the opportunity to present their case to a judge. At that hearing either party can be represented by an attorney. The Judge will then determine if the Injunction shall remain in effect or whether it shall be dismissed. Injunctions can remain in effect for a certain period of time or indefinitely. The Injunction can also be modified allowing minimal contact to discuss issues such as child visitation. The purpose of this Injunction is to offer protection to someone who has been the victim of domestic violence or has a reasonable fear to believe that he/she will be a victim. Unfortunately, it is sometimes abused by individuals who use it as a means to “get back” or punish their spouse. I often say that the Injunction is to be used as a shield to protect an individual and not as a sword to harm someone. The Petition seeking the Injunction is sworn to by the applicant as being true. It is unlawful to lie under oath. Nobody should allow themselves to be a victim of domestic violence. If you are, the law exists for your protection. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

communication. The Broward Sheriff’s Office’s success begins with its dedicated employees. The men and women of this organization collectively offer thousands of years of public service experience. There is a great deal of talent throughout this agency, and I have had the honor of promoting some of our most highly-qualified leaders. Our new leadership is strong. As an agency, we will operate more efficiently and effectively as we continue to focus on our mission of public safety. We are also bolstering our recruitment efforts to identify well-qualified individuals who are committed to public safety and are eager to serve. Ongoing professional training is paramount to public safety. Our training division has been restructured, focusing on providing BSO employees with the education, training and tools needed to perform their duties properly. We are working toward establishing an on-site training complex to provide more intensive, frequent training necessary to address today’s public safety challenges. We have established a Threat Management Division, which encompasses our Real Time Crime Center. This unified crime center will provide a means for law enforcement to utilize cutting-edge technology to proactively identify and investigate potentially dangerous threats to our community. We have been in direct communication with Broward school officials examining ways to enhance our school safety and security. In the coming weeks and months, we will continue to evaluate our priorities and develop new policies and initiatives to improve our operations. We will be fiscally responsible and ensure we are allocating resources to the appropriate areas of public safety. Going forward, we will encourage two-way communication and open dialogue. New communication tools will be implemented to listen and connect better with the community. I am proud of the strides we are already making to restore honor and confidence in this organization, and we are just getting started. Together, we will work toward achieving great success while prioritizing public safety. I look forward to meeting members of the community in the coming months. REAL ESTATE
Sellers: Set the Stage BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR t’s no secret that homes are staying on the market longer. Unless you are priced in that sweet spot of $300,000 to $400,000, and have maintained your home, you may have to look to staging to have that home “show ready.” When it’s time to sell your home, you must depersonalize and neutralize. Buyers may walk out as soon as they walk in if the home is too “lived in and loved on.” You may not have to spend your hard-earned money to get this accomplished, because there are some reasonable items you can do yourself. Here are some tips that can be DIY: ▸▸ Store away or box personal items. ▸▸ Clear out the clutter. ▸▸ Rearrange rooms to showcase their best potential. ▸▸ Scrub, clean, and scrub some more. Smell is the strongest sensory memory. ▸▸ Charge up the curb appeal. You want buyers to view your home as their home. Prospective buyers may have a hard time envisioning themselves in the house if they’re gazing into the eyes of your family. Family vacation and school photos are too distracting. An over-abundance of religious paraphernalia can be a turnoff. Toy clutter may be the biggest offender. Empty nesters may turn their nose up at a house full of toys and children’s artwork spattered all over the refrigerator and taped to the walls of bedrooms. A corner of your garage, obtaining a small storage unit, or a relative or friend who owes you a favor may be your best solutions for decluttering. Rearranging your furniture at an angle draws interest into the room. Keep it light and bright with touches of color. This expands the space. The smell of fresh paint gives a sense of newness. Do Mr. and Mrs. Clean live here? Selling a “pre-owned” home has its challenges – especially if the buyers have been perusing new construction. Beds should be neatly made; do not leave dishes on countertops or in the sink; and the smell of clean should permeate the airways. All trash should be taken out and cans should be replaced with deodorizing trash bags. A professional window washer works well. Remove screens from windows and doors to allow more light. Dust removed from ceiling fans and door jams is a must. All animal odors need to be removed. This may require the purchase of a Rainbow Rainmate Air Freshener or Doctor Aromas kit for your air-conditioning units. Either will keep the home smelling fresh and clean continuously – ready for the next showing at a moment’s notice. The exterior of your home is where the first impression starts. Fresh mulch is a nice touch – make sure it does not smell offensively as potential buyers walk up to your front door (which should be freshly pressure cleaned). A cut lawn with sidewalks and walkways free from debris is a great place to begin. Pressure clean that patio! There’s so much you can do yourself, and there are professionals whom you can hire. Regardless, a home is more marketable if the Seller sets the stage with his Realtor’s guidance!
