Watchman , a new treatment to prevent stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib) TM
A new alternative to blood thinners Atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, is among the leading causes of stroke in the United States. The WatchmanTM procedure, a new treatment option approved by the FDA, can reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib).
The Watchman procedure takes about one hour, is performed through a catheter and requires only a local anesthetic. The Watchman device is used to close the left atrial appendage where 90 to 95 percent of the clots form in patients with non-valvular AFib. The risk of the procedure is low, and patients typically go home the morning after the procedure.
Watchman, a surgical procedure which includes the implantation of a device, is good news for the millions of people affected by AFib, whose stroke risk is four to five times higher compared to the general population. Robert J. Cubeddu, MD Treatment with Watchman might prevent approximately 750,000 annual hospitalizations due to strokes related to AFib.
Currently, Watchman is the only approved interventional treatment for closure of the left atrial appendage for stroke prevention. Aside from the reduction in stroke, the major advantage of the Watchman procedure is the ability of the patient to stop taking blood thinners permanently.
Preventing the disability associated with stroke is imperative, especially since strokes caused by AFib tend to be more severe than those that are attributed to other causes. Plus, with the increase in the population of aging boomers, the number of AFib-related stroke victims is expected to rise significantly. According to Dr. Robert J. Cubeddu, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida, AFib is very common among patients over 65 years of age, and is therefore prevalent in South Florida, a retirement hub. Most patients with AFib are currently taking blood thinners also known as anticoagulants. “Blood thinners are required for a lifetime, and their use is often limited by their side-effects, and the need for regular bloodwork and strict adherence to medication protocols,” said Dr. Cubeddu. “In addition to those side-effects, several studies have suggested that up to 40 percent of patients with AFib are poor candidates for the blood thinners due to a history of internal bleeding, a diagnosis of peptic ulcer or cancer, or even a risk for falls.” In other words, many people with AFib need new treatment options.
To find out if Watchman is the right treatment for you, schedule an evaluation with Dr. Cubeddu, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/heart.

“Studies have consistently shown an equivalent reduction in overall stroke rates after a Watchman procedure, and perhaps a long-term marginal survival benefit when compared to blood thinners,” said Dr. Cubeddu. “It’s an important new option for our patients.”

Cooper City Residents to Celebrate Moms BY DEBBY TEICH
T
he City of Cooper City is offering families two ways to help celebrate Moms and the many things that make them special. They can participate in the annual Mother-Daughter Tea or Mother’s Day at the Pool. “In a fast-paced world inundated with technology, sometimes it is great to disconnect and recreate traditions,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “Tea Parties became widespread in the 1800’s. Women would change into gloves and hats for their tea parties complete with lots of guests, pageantry, servants, silver teapots, fine linens, musicians, elegant teacups, and great tea. Our tea party does our best to recreate the traditional experience, while fostering mother daughter relationships.” On May 12, from 11am – 1pm, Cooper City moms and their daughters, ages pre-K and up, will gather at a new location for the annual tea party - Cooper City Elementary School, 5080 SW 92nd Avenue. This year’s theme is “Royal Tea Party.” All Cooper City queens, princesses and other royalty are invited to this noble affair. The teacups, saucers, sugar bowls, and creamers are all pieces from authentic tea sets that are borrowed from residents and participants. Mothers and daughters will receive a keepsake photo of the event. There is limited seating and no tickets will available

throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. Dads recently had their turn earlier in the year with the Father and Son Adventure Night. Other events include MomSon Night of Fun (September), Grandparent’s Day (September) and Daddy Daughter Dance (November). The goal of the Cooper City Recreation Department is to promote community involvement by residents of all ages. The Department is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to reach the residents of Cooper City. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org or call 954434-4300, ext. 233.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 5/31/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Yasmin or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at: WindmillHealth@att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

The City of Cooper City hosted a Teen Twilight Egg Hunt for Cooper City teens in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at the Pool and Tennis Center. During the free fun-filled event, teens used flashlights to hunt in the dark for special hidden eggs. The Cooper City Recreation Department also hosted its Annual Egg Hunt for children, Photos credit: Town of Davie & City of Cooper City 5th grade and under, at the Cooper City Sports Complex. Participants hunted for prize-filled eggs with children their own age. They also got to visit with the Easter bunny and participate in a variety of children’s activities.
Nearly 5,000 people attended the Town of Davie’s Hippity Hoppity Hunt at Bamford Sports Complex. There were over 3,000 eggs scattered throughout the fields. Children were awarded prizes for finding the

Davie to Honor Veterans on Memorial Day 2017 Memorial Day
BY DEBBY TEICH
F
or nearly 50 years, Davie families have been gathering for the Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony to pay their respects to the men and women who died while serving in the military. On May 28, the Town of Davie, Scoutmasters Camporee Committee South Florida Council, and the Boy Scouts of America will host the event again. “Town of Davie’s Memorial Day ceremony gives our residents the chance to express their appreciation for all of the veterans who gave their lives serving our country,” said Jeffrey Pohlman, Town of Davie Assistant Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts. “The Boy Scouts of America organize an incred-
ible ceremony every year. It is truly something special to see and be a part of.” The parade kicks off at the Davie Fire Administration Building, 6901 Orange Drive. Lineup and assembly starts at 9:30am and the parade begins at 10:30am. Participants will travel east on Orange Drive and then north on Rodeo Way to the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Scouting units and community organizations are encouraged to participate. The streets will be lined with patriotic people waving their American flags and dressed in red, white and blue. Some of the participants will include: scouts, schools, local organizations and businesses, Davie Police and Fire Rescue, military organizations, Town Councilmembers, and more.
Following the parade, at approximately 11am., a Memorial Service will take place at the Rodeo Grounds, 4271 Davie Road. Participants will show their support for our soldiers and recognize the sacrifices they have made and are making to ensure the country’s freedom. Soldiers who fought in each of the different wars will be recognized during a moving ceremony that includes a 21 Gun Salute. Flags will be available prior to the service for $1. During the service, the public can place the flags (purchased or brought) on a veteran’s grave marker. For more information, send an email to chief@smcc.us or visit the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts page on the Town of Davie website, www.davie-fl.gov.
City of Cooper City Founder’s Day Parade and Festivities Are a Success BY DEBBY TEICH
C
ity of Cooper City residents celebrated at the 59th Founder’s Day Parade and Festivities. There were plenty of activities for the entire family all day long. “This is a once-a-year event that celebrates this amazing city,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Specialist. “It’s an opportunity for families to spend the day together with neighbors and friends at an event filled with fun entertainment for all ages.” The morning events kicked off with a 5K Color Run and One Mile Fun Run. All proceeds from the event benefited Cooper City/Davie Relay for Life. It was followed by the Founder’s Day parade and float competition, which included City officials, BSO, fire department, high school bands, scout troops, sports teams, local organizations, clubs, businesses and more. The celebration continued in the afternoon at Brian Piccolo Park with a car show, food booths, community performances, Bingo, arts and crafts show, Cooper City Business Expo, bounce houses, BSO Police and Fire Expo, children’s activities and much more. The winners from the pageants were also announced. At night, participants relaxed during a concert in the park and watched a spectacular fireworks display.

i Five Academy Child Care Center in Davie recently joined the nationwide effort to Read Across America. National Education Association’s annual reading motivation and awareness program calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of
beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. Family Central’s Teen Advisory Board hosted a special Dr. Seussthemed event for the preschoolers. It was all in the spirit of Dr. Seuss and early literacy education. “We are so proud of the next generation of leaders who make up our Family Central Teen Advisory Board,” said Family Central, Inc. President & CEO Barbara Weinstein, Ed.D. “They are incredible students with a passion for helping children reach their full potential.” During the event, seven teens presented hundreds of books they had collected from family and friends, as well as from a BBYO group that held a book drive for Family Central. They read Dr. Seuss books, such as Cat in the Hat, Red Fish Blue Fish, Hop on Pop and Fox in Socks. They played Bingo, Stack the Cups, Match the Dr. Seuss Cards and other games. They also used Jell-O, marshmallows and gradistraction to these kids,” said Sara. “The kids seemed ham crackers to create Dr. Seuss hats. overjoyed to have us there and to participate in Sara Joseph, 15, was one of the teens the activities. Western High School Students Prepare for Solar Car Race BY DEBBY TEICH
S
tudents on the Solar Cat team at Western High School are leaning how to apply physics and mechanics to build an optimal vehicle that can run solely on sunlight. This summer, they will participate in a cross country solar car race from Fort Worth, Texas to Palmdale, California. They will represent their school and the state of Florida in the nationally-recognized race. The team was introduced in 2013 as a part of the STEM Academy (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics), which encourages students to pursue these fields in the future. The team includes 16 students, as well as five adult volunteers and teachers. Students meet during class and after school. In summer 2015, the team participated in the Solar Car Challenge for the first time and was named one of the best rookie teams. The team built a new car for the 2016 race, which stretched from Dallas to Minneapolis, and improved its rank from 10th to 4th. This summer, students are hoping for an even better result, as they travel approximately 110 miles/day in the 1,000-mile race. They will race in the SolarCat V2, which was completed in 2016. It took the students six months to build with the help of their STEM teacher and a Motorola Solutions mentor. This year, they have spent countless hours after school and on
weekends to optimize its efficiency. They are making it more aerodynamic; enhancing the solar panel array; and reducing overall weight and friction. This is Gabriela Lopez’s first year on the team. She joined to learn about renewable energy, mechanics, and electrical practices all in one class. She plans to pursue a career in engineering. “Students get to experience the hands-on side of engineering,” said Lopez, who is public relations manager for the team. “Through meeting so often and being so dedicated to this race, we become almost like a second family.” Lopez says the greatest challenge has been raising enough money to help pay for the car and send the entire team to Texas for the race. It has set up a Go Fund Me page at gf.me/u/hmdm6r. For information, visit www.TheSolarCats.com or send an email to Thesolarcats@gmail.com.

ASK THE MAYOR
Davie Update BY DAVIE MAYOR JUDY PAUL
A
s a result of the tragedy which occurred on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, I initiated a call for an enhanced school safety program and increases to our School Resource Officers cadre. My council backed me as they have always been in favor of having officers in every school. At its public meeting on March 21, 2018, the Davie Town Council took the initiative to increase public safety to include School Resources Officers (SRO’s) at all Davie public schools for the remaining 2017-2018 school year through a budget amendment. This was based on an overwhelming number of requests across our community resulting from the heartbreaking and tragic event at Marjorie Stoneman High School. Prior to this latest tragedy, there were seven total SRO’s in these schools - one in each high and middle school and two SRO’s rotating in order to cover the seven elementary schools. Davie has seven elementary, two middle and three high schools. Since the tragedy, resources have been allocated for additional Officer coverage at our schools. This is being accomplished through overtime and staff reassignments, which is not sustainable in the long term. The accounts being applied are contingency, police impact fees, and Law Enforcement Trust Funds, which will not be available for FY2019. For the police, this amendment includes six sworn police officer positions to meet the requested demand of one SRO in each school. Western High School has our highest enrollment and an additional SRO will be added to have two police officers at this location. We will also be seeking to add an investigative component to our FY19 school safety initiative. This program will provide the ability to monitor on-line threats and social media postings that potentially could bring harm to our schools. The Town of Davie is committed to the safety of our children and I feel these are steps needed to secure our community and provide a safe atmosphere in our schools. We will also add the necessary supervisory support to oversee our school resource officer program. As for fire, this meets the need for a 3rd person on the rescue truck for each shift covering the 12-hour peak demand at our highest call demand at Station 38. The additional person on the rescue truck will allow a more concentrated response in caring for victims in any emergency situation. A number of school administrators, teachers and parents were on hand to speak and applaud our initiative which passed unanimously. The goal is to initiate filling these positions as of May 1, 2018. Council recognizes the need and community support to identify additional revenue for FY 2019. This discussion will begin at the Annual Town Council Vision and Goal Session on April 13, 2018. In other action, at the March 21 council meeting there was a first reading of an ordinance that prohibits tethering dogs under certain conditions and puts forth guidelines for the dog’s proper care. It always amazes me that what conscientious pet owners consider common sense care and maintenance is not always the way some people treat their fur babies, and that legislation is needed to protect our vulnerable four-legged friends. Be safe and remember to call or email me with any concerns or suggestions you might have. For information, call 954-797-1030 or send an email to jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

Insomnia May be an Indication of Other Health Concerns BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP
A
bout 30-40% of Americans have reported suffering from insomnia (one of the most common sleep disorders), according to the US Department of Health and Services. Having a bad night’s sleep is common for most people, but if you suffer from repeated episodes of not being able to fall asleep or have difficulty staying asleep, it is time to get help. The human body needs sleep as much as it needs to breathe to function properly, because recovery is crucial. This is the time when your body uses cells to repair damage and creates antibodies to fight infections and keep you healthy. In addition, sleep time provides for new learning and memory pathways to be formed in the brain. While you are sleeping, heart rate and blood pressure slow down to give your heart a much needed break; one single night of sleep deprivation can cause your blood pressure to skyrocket the next day. Consider what happens to your body when you are sleep deprived. You are irritable and feel tired; you have trouble making decisions and solving problems; you can’t focus; you are more easily confused and more likely to get sick. Essentially, your body is under stress. While some individuals choose to put sleep in the back burner in order to keep up with the demands of a hectic, technology-driven world, others are trying to get their nightly rest and are unable to. Consider this - you’ve had a long day at work; put the kids to sleep; and it is finally time to unwind. You’ve been thinking of this moment all day long and now you are finally in bed. It’s 1am or 2am and you are still tossing and turning in spite of feeling exhausted. Suddenly, you wake up and then eventually you fall asleep. Now it’s time for work and you are feeling as fatigued, if not more, than the day before. This cycle continues day in and day out for many individuals who think this is just the way life is. Some resort to teas and pills in hopes of finding comfort, but know that there is a better answer to meeting your sleep needs. Unless you work with a qualified professional, you won’t know why this is happening to you. You may be suffering from undiagnosed thyroid issues or simply have a vitamin/mineral deficiency. There are many reasons why humans can have difficulty sleeping. The simple fact of not being able to fall asleep creates stress and anxiety that can prevent you from falling asleep the next day, and the next week, and the next month. Insomnia is just one more way your body is crying for attention and it is an indication that something is out of balance - don’t ignore it. The most important goal in functional medicine is the optimization of health and balance. At Bellissimo Medical we can conduct specialized testing to find the cause of insomnia, as well as guide you into making lifestyle changes that will restore your good health and well-being. Balancing hormones may be all that’s needed, or we may need to look in other directions, such as addressing the thyroid, adrenals, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, neurotransmitters of the brain and much more. Let our years of experience guide you in becoming balanced and sleeping well again. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette practices Functional Medicine and is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Caregiving for a Loved One with Dementia BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES
C
aring for someone with dementia is a job no one ever hopes for. And in many cases, it is a role for which most people aren’t prepared. But many families find themselves with someone in the family needing care. Every 66 seconds, someone in the United States develops dementia. Worldwide that number is once every three seconds. So, the reality is you probably know, or will know, someone with the disease. Although there is currently no way to prevent or cure Alzheimer’s, there are things that can be done to ease the burden of caregiving. One of the most important tips is to put together a strong support team. This team is made up of professionals, family members, friends, organizations, and any other person who can assist during this journey. The medical component of the team should be a physician who understands dementia and all that goes with it. This may mean using a physician other than the primary care doctor. It doesn’t mean changing doctors, but instead supplementing. An elder law attorney is also a key member of the team. It is imperative to make sure that all needed paperwork be completed while the person is still able to make such decisions. Also, the elder law attorney can steer you in the right direction in regarding financial decisions. Medicaid and Medicare laws are quite complex and ever changing. Another part of the team should include a support group. These groups, usually led by a trained facilitator, provide information about the disease, progression and resources. As a caregiver, you will gain valuable information not only from the facilitator, but from the other members of the group. Many people find that support groups offer a safe place to share thoughts that they may not share with others that are not in their situation. When looking for a support group, location may not be the most important factor. What are the dynamics of the group? If you are a spouse but most of the group is made up of adult children, it may not be the right fit. What is the style of the facilitator? You should a have a leader that you are comfortable with. Friends and family members are vital members of the team. It is not uncommon for parents to assume their adult children are too busy, too far away or not interested in helping. Others assume they are going to help more than they are able. Assumptions also might be made regarding financial decisions. Open discussions about these topics are important, so that there are not conflicts down the road. Friends, neighbors, church members often want to help but don’t know what to offer. When a person says, “If there is ever anything you need, please ask,” have a mental list of what you need. Perhaps they could bring a meal once a month. Or maybe go to the pharmacy or the store when needed. You are not able to do this job on your own. As they say, “It takes a village.” And having a team around you will make part of the journey a bit easier. ASK THE EXPERT
Beware of the Sippy Cup BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN
M
any parents have been educated early in regards to the potential hazards in the misuse of baby bottles. As bottles are used for infants/ babies, they usually contain milk or formula. Parents are now being educated against putting their child down with a bottle for fear of contributing to early childhood caries (ECC). In fact, the occurrence of multiple cavities at this young age, ECC, was for a long time referred to as “baby bottle cavities.” Parents have also been instructed to wean their child off of the bottle as their child approached the toddler years. In comes the “sippy cup.” It is not a bottle. It is spill proof. It is perfect for travel, prevents spills, and kids seem to keep quieter longer when they have them. It is perfect for use…and misuse.

The problem is that functionally, the use of the sippy cup creates the same exposure to sugary beverages as the bottle. The use of both bottles and sippy cups necessitate an extension forward of the tongue with a simultaneous retraction of the cheeks. This action causes an exposure of the front teeth to liquid, while at the same time removes the natural cleansing effect of the saliva and tongue. When the liquid is milk or juice, the result is an increased likelihood of developing cavities. The importance of this is highlighted by the 10% rise in occurrence of cavities in two- to five year olds in this decade vs. last. The following are sippy cup tips recommended by the America Association of Pediatric Dentistry: ▸▸ Use sippy cups as they were intended, as a transitional tool from bottle to cup. Therefore, they should not be used for extended periods of time. ▸▸ Sippy cups should be filled with juice or milk for meals only. ▸▸ A child should not be using a sippy cup for bedtime or naps, unless filled with water. ▸▸ Diluting juice does not significantly reduce the cavity causing ability of the juice. Whether it is potty training, removal of a pacifier, or discontinuing the use of a bottle, transitioning our children can be an extremely challenging part of parenting. It is our opinion that patience and consistency are the keys to success. In terms of the transition from the bottle, we highly recommend creating a routine that promotes the drinking of water. Juices and milk should be saved for meal times only. Getting your child used to this early will surely help reduce the need for avoidable dental treatment. REAL ESTATE
Nowhere to Go but Up BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR
F
reddie Mac recently published a report: “Nowhere to go but up? How increasing mortgage rates could affect housing.” The report focused on the impact the projected rise in mortgage rates might have on the housing market in 2018. There exists a myth that an increase in mortgage rates will cause a slowdown in purchases, which would, in turn, lead to a fall in house values. Ultimately, however, prices are determined by supply and demand. While rising mortgage rates may slow demand, they
also affect supply. As a Real Estate professional, I have witnessed rising mortgage rates affecting future buying power. According to Inman, “the Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell, announced a modest benchmark interest rate hike of between 1.5 percent and 1.75 percent amidst continued optimism over economic growth in 2018. In the first of what economists predict will likely be three adjustments in 2018, the Fed called for a 25-basis-point increase, and a fed funds rate of 1.63 percent, at the conclusion of the Central Bank’s twoday Open Market Committee meeting. The new benchmark rate is the highest since September 2008, near the beginning of the housing crisis.” According to Freddie Mac: “For current homeowners, the decision to buy a new home is typically linked to their decision to sell their current home.” Because of this link, the financing costs of the existing mortgage are part of the homeowner’s decision of whether and when to move. Once financing costs for a new mortgage rise above the rate borrowers are paying for their current mortgage, borrowers would have to give up below-market financing to sell their home. Instead, they may choose to delay both the sale of their existing home and the purchase of a new home to maintain the advantageous financing.” This would result in a slow-down of the market and rising inventory. The direct effect of increasing mortgage rates is on the borrowers - specifically, their decision as to which home to buy, when to buy, and how much to borrow. These decisions are heavily influenced by mortgage rates: The higher the rate, the higher the monthly payments required to purchase a home. How will rising mortgage rates affect home prices? Rising mortgage rates affect home prices, because they influence supply and demand, which affect home prices. Fortunately, our Davie-Cooper City area has been so low in inventory for the past year that the homes listed between $250,000 and $400,000 might become more available for buyers qualified for that price range. Whether you are a homeowner and a move-up buyer or a first-time buyer, waiting to purchase your next home based on the belief that prices will fall because of rising mortgage rates does not make any sense. We cannot time the market, but we can certainly study the trends. With three slated rate hikes in 2018, now may be the time to make your move. lthough there are several classifications of alimony in this state, such as “Bridge the Gap,” Rehabilitative and Durational, the one classification which creates the most controversy is Permanent Alimony. This classification of alimony can be required in a long-term marriage, which is defined as a marriage of 17 years or more. Permanent Alimony will terminate upon the death of either party, or the remarriage of the receiving spouse. In addition, it can be modified (increased or reduced) if there a substantial change of circumstance occurs. A substantial change of circumstance usually refers to a change in the finances of either party. If either spouse loses his or her job and a new job results in a lower income, that would be considered a substantial change of circumstance. The change, however, cannot be voluntary in nature. A person cannot quit his/her job and then ask the court for some relief due to this intentional act. Permanent Alimony can also be terminated or modified if a “supportive relationship” exists. The question is, “What exactly is a supportive relationship?” Florida Statutes do, in fact, define such a relationship, but it is certainly open to interpretation. It exists when a couple, who is not legally married, does in essence hold themselves out as a married couple. Many individuals who receive Permanent Alimony will avoid re-marriage, since it will end alimony by operation of law. The Supportive Relationship Statute was enacted to deal with couples, who are in essence married, but not by operation of law.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
The Courts are to consider the following in determining whether a supportive relationship exists: ▸▸ The extent which the couple has held themselves out as a married couple or otherwise conducted themselves in a manner that evidences a permanent supportive relationship ▸▸ The amount of time the parties have lived together ▸▸ Have the parties pooled their income or assets or otherwise exhibited financial interdependence? ▸▸ The extent that either party has supported the other ▸▸ The extent of which either party has performed valuable services for the other party ▸▸ Whether the parties have jointly contributed to the purchase of real property ▸▸ Whether the parties have an express or implied agreement concerning support or property sharing The above criteria clearly show that there is much room for interpretation by a judge. It is believed that the Florida legislature will, in fact, someday address this statute in an attempt to clarify the intent.

I Wanna Rock! – Rockfest Concerts Breathes Life into the Miramar Amphitheater with Multi-Year Concert Series BY TERRY JAILLET
R
ockfest Concerts, the renowned promoter of the Rockfest 80s Music Festivals, has signed an exclusive agreement to promote events at the Miramar Amphitheater. Led by music veteran Roy Anthony, Rockfest Concerts has been putting on shows throughout South Florida for over a decade. The group is best known for its retro 80s events featuring legendary rockers like Dokken, 38 Special and Joan Jett. The new concert series, however, isn’t just for head bangers. In fact, the first three events will feature Latin music and Hip-Hop. “We are so excited to tap into the diversity of South Florida,” said Anthony, “We want to put on shows for all types of people and music.” All the events will be held at the Miramar Amphitheater at Miramar Regional Park. The venue, which has 3,000 covered seats and room for 2,000 more on the lawn, is a perfect fit for the types of events Rockfest envisions. Concertgoers will get the benefits they’ve come to expect at major venues, like VIP sections and multiple food and beverage options, while also enjoying a much more intimate concert experience. The first two events planned are the Festival Cinco de Mayo on May 5th
DAV 0518.indd 43
and the Godfather’s of Hip Hop on May 18th. Festival Cinco de Mayo The First concert in the series will celebrate Mexican Independence Day with music from all over Latin America. The headliner is Mexican Grammynominated artist Paquita La Del Barrio. Known for giving it to “Macho” men in the crowd while belting out regional favorites, Barrio is a true entertainer. Paquita will be joined by sexy Columbian salsa and tropical diva Carolina La O as well as special guest KerreKe. The Godfathers of Hip-Hop The second event hosted by Rockfest will be The Godfathers of Hip Hop, featuring many of the names who put Hip-Hop on the map. Doug E. Fresh and Naughty by Nature top the line up of 80s and 90s superstars. The crowd is sure to get down to Doug E Fresh’s The Show or Naughty by Nature’s party anthems O.P.P and Hip-Hop Hooray. But, the real treat of the night will be the when Eric B. and Rakim unite for the first time in 20 years. The duo’s seminal track, Paid in Full, is considered by many music critics as one of the top hip-hop songs ever produced. To hear it live for the first time in two decades is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Rockfest is already promoting several more events at the Amphitheater this summer with many more in the works. Mark your calendar for the Latin Spring Festival on June 15th, Loudwire’s GenX Summer on July 3rd and the annual twoday Rockfest 80’s event scheduled for November 10th and 11th. Rockfest Concerts’ goal is to inject a diverse music scene into the region. It hopes to put on as many as 20 or 25 concerts a year. n To purchase tickets to upcoming events or learn more about Rockfest Concerts visit www.rockfestconcerts.com. Tickets to upcoming events are available at Ticketmaster.

y air or by sea, and on the ground, the Broward Sheriff’s Office’s specialized units are devoted to keeping all of the county’s 1.9 million residents and millions of annual visitors safer. In fact, these countywide units, when working in tandem with our dedicated men and women on the streets, provide exceptional service to all the cities in Broward County – not just those policed by BSO. I’d like to tell you about a few of these units and how they serve our communities. We’ve all seen police forensics shows like “C.S.I.” and how they amazingly use DNA and other forensic evidence to catch a criminal within an hour-long episode. But, in real life, this sort of work takes weeks or even months. This meticulous work requires patience and precision, qualities the roughly 50 dedicated professionals in BSO’s Crime Laboratory display every day. In fact, our crime lab is a nationally-recognized leader in the forensic science community as the first sheriff’s office crime laboratory to become internationally accredited by the prestigious American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/ Laboratory Accreditation Board. BSO’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team has been bravely serving Broward for more than four decades. During that time, SWAT has responded to some of the county’s most dangerous law enforcement situations, including barricaded subjects and hostagetaking situations, violent felon search/arrest warrant operations and other tactical operations. Today, nearly 40 deputies, nine county firefighter/paramedics and 12 negotiators staff this team. It also takes a special type of person to run toward a potential explosive and attempt to defuse it. But that’s exactly what our BSO Bomb Squad technicians do. This unit coordinates the investigations of situations involving the use of bombs, explosives and mass-destruction weapons and at post-blast explosion scenes. The unit’s highly-trained and skilled members are equipped with state-of-the-art tools including two custom-designed bomb disposal response vehicles, a full-containment explosive vessel with transport, the newest remote bomb disposal robot and two additional remote-control robots. BSO must also give thanks to the furry friends in our K-9 unit who help sniff out crime. These loyal canine deputies of various breeds are specially bred and trained for a variety of tasks. Some canines track and apprehend criminals, while others search for and find missing persons. Other BSO dogs sniff out narcotics and bombs and even find contraband smuggled into our jails. Today, we have 55 dogs assigned throughout the agency available around the clock for immediate response. Our countywide units are not limited to the land. The BSO Marine Unit provides critical help in our waterways, and our Aviation Unit helicopters are our eyes in the sky, helping to locate and apprehend violent criminals. They also routinely perform emergency medical transports and assist with rescue missions in the Florida Everglades. And all of these services – which are called “regional services” – are made available upon request to help assist law enforcement departments in every corner of Broward. At BSO, our tasks may be varied, but our mission is the same: to serve and protect all of Broward. If you’d like to learn more about our efforts, please visit us on our community resource page at sheriff.org.
