Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 5/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Laurie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Andrea or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at: WindmillHealth@att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

State-of-the-Art Aviation Academy Comes to Pembroke Pines

A

A new multi-million-dollar Aviation Education Center opened at Hollywood North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines. Wayman Aviation Academy is the largest and longest-running flight school in South Florida. It serves students from over 70 countries for over 32 years. The school opened the doors to its new state-of-the-art expansion facility on Friday, March 22. North Perry Airport has become a strong center for flight training, recently heralded as the busiest VFR airport in the state of Florida. It is at the cross roads of Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and Hollywood Florida.

18 MAY 2019 | OUR CITY DAVIE | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

The new facility will increase the school’s capacity for students from its partners including Miami-Dade College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Liberty University and airlines. New classrooms will lead to expanded course offerings; a large seminar space for gatherings such as its recent open house for 60 Girl Scouts. It will house a new dispatch and flight line to accommodate its fleet of nearly 40 aircraft. The Wayman FAA certified testing center for pilots, mechanics, dispatchers will double to 10 seats. “We’re very proud to take the next step in the growth. Our goal is to become an Aviation Institute offering the best training and education for the new generation of aviators”, says Wayman Eddy Luy, Vice President and 2nd generation manager of the school.

The school aims to support local and international students that are responding to the worldwide shortage of pilots. Boeing and Airbus estimate a need for over 345,000 pilots over the next 20 years. However, the US only trains approximately 14,000 ATP pilots a year, half of what it needs to meet demand. This has led to rising entry level wages at the regional airlines and booming salaries for senior captains. The new facility will be next to Wayman Aviation’s existing FAA certified Part 145 aircraft repair station, and its renown pilot shop at 7501 S Airport Rd Pembroke Pines, FL. The school maintains a flight line at Miami -Opa Locka Executive Airport as well. For more information on how to become a pilot visit www.wayman.net or call 786-574-5228

The Difference ‘Why Not?’ Makes. Memory care guided by positivity, purpose, and passion.

As we look back over our lives, it’s our experiences, career paths, and achievements that define who we are. Even our favorite pastimes become a part of our identities. But, just as someone’s arthritis or diabetes shouldn’t define who they are, neither should their diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s may slowly erode a person’s memories and cognitive skills, but, the core of a person’s identity and passions remain. They are still the unique individual they’ve always been, with likes and dislikes, and unique talents and wisdom to share. The details of the past—and the words to express them—might be harder to conjure up now, but the ability to be genuinely happy and purposeful in the moment are ever-present. Engagement is not only possible, it’s necessary to stave off further decline. So, when it comes to memory care in a community setting, the delivery of daily care must be just as one-of-a-kind as the people receiving it. That’s the basic foundation of The Artis Way—the unwavering philosophy of the recently completed Artis Senior Living of Lakeview. The Artis Way is their refreshingly different approach to memory care—as it is in their 17 purpose-built sister communities.

“When you change the way you operate from ‘we can’t do that!’ to ‘why not?,’ amazing things happen!” Part of Miriam’s job as Director of Partnership Development is to collaborate with families to learn every detail about their loved ones. “We take the time to get to know what will make your mom or dad, wife or husband smile when they walk in here. And we keep ourselves open to possibilities.” Together they complete an eight-page Partnership Profile—which the Artis team keeps on hand and uses to plan imaginative and meaningful experiences for that resident as often as possible. “We try not to tell our residents or their families ‘no’—unless it’s not safe. But otherwise, we really try to give people back the lives they used to love— the aspects of them that their families thought were gone for good. We’re full of pleasant surprises here!” The Artis staff genuinely loves to make the seemingly impossible possible—an exceedingly unusual operating standard in the field of senior living and memory care.

Artis Senior Living prides itself on the moments they’ve been able to create for memory care residents and their families. Here are a few: Ronald a former baseball coach. He longed to play baseball again. So the Artis staff transformed a portion of the community into an indoor baseball diamond, inviting residents, families and staff to play the bases with him. And Mary, an avid gardener. The Artis staff planted rose bushes outside her bedroom window. And veteran George, who was welcomed on move-in day by an honor guard, 15 National Guardsmen, and local legislators, who presented him with a special coin. And Jacob, whose Alzheimer’s deprived him of his ability to speak. But that didn’t stop him from expressing his love for his wife on their 50th anniversary, when staff and residents gathered around them with signs exclaiming “Happy Anniversary!” Artis is proof that you can treasure each person’s uniqueness with dignified, individualized memory care. Because disease doesn’t define a person. Their indomitable spirit does.

Vonnie Keyser Celebrated as 2019 Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year BY JON DUKA

T

he Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce recognized Vonnie Keyser, owner of MaidPro Cooper City as its Volunteer of the Year on April 17th. Each year the Chamber recognizes a member for his/her contributions to the organization and to the community at large. We had a chance to catch up with this year’s winner. Why did you get involved with the Chamber? I joined the chamber to be on the Women in Business Committee! I was at a networking event, hosted by the Business Advisory Board and after hearing about the committee, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. Once I became involved and saw the great things a chamber does for its members and the community, I was all in. I am a follower of my mother’s teachings to be a charitable person, to be kind, to be a light, and to live in a way that makes others proud to know you. You are participating in the West Broward Leadership Program, tell us about that. I am so happy to be among the first participants of this leadership program!

With one class under our belt, I can say I have already learned a great deal about the inner workings of the Town of Davie and the City of Cooper City. I enjoyed hearing from the top level as well as from those who,

while their work may be more “behind the scenes”, are an important part of the processes that make things run. Additionally, I have enjoyed getting to know my fellow “classmates” and I can see already that we are

creating lasting relationships, both as professionals and friends. What makes your business, MaidPro, so successful. A business cannot run without employees they are the life and face of the company. I believe if you treat your employees with respect and trust, and empower them to do their job, they will feel valued and their performance will help you build a successful business. I believe in providing employees with opportunities to develop both personally and professionally as well as hiring from within if at all possible. This way they know they have room for advancement and will therefore be a loyal member of your staff and set a good example for the others. My goal is to help my employees find their greatness. If they end up leaving my company to pursue their passion, then I have done my part in the world by helping someone grow and better their life. Vonnie Keyser is the owner of MaidPro Cooper City. A Whiter, Brighter Smile BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

A

s I sit down to write this article, I am trying out a new tooth whitening product which we are considering for the practice. We have reviewed the research provided by the manufacturer, have listened to paid experts who lecture on its behalf and have read over the instructions provided for use. Still the last test is personal. The doctor has become the patient. There is no doubt that cosmetic dentistry has become a big part of public demand over the past decade. The surprising part is that the market has opened up to a younger population. We are asked more and more about the appropriate time to consider dental bleaching for children as well as the effectiveness of over-the counter products. Let’s first examine the downside/side effects of bleaching. The most commonly documented side effect is sensitivity. This can be from sensitivity of teeth or gum tissue, but is usually the later due to an ill fitting tray. The good news is that sensitivity goes away after the bleaching product is discontinued. The second most common side effect is leakage of the margins of a present restoration. What this means is that it may shorten the lifespan of a filling or crown. However, well prepared/fitting dental work would tend to be less affected. What then is the benefit of a professional system vs. an over-the counter system (OTC)? The main difference between the two is the concentration of the active ingredient which is carbamide peroxide in most cases. Professional systems work faster, make teeth whiter, and results tend to last longer. OTC systems are more accessible and are usually less expensive. In my opinion, the most important part of the process, no matter which system is used, is making whitening part of the dental treatment plan. For example, whitening may have no effect on specific teeth which were previously traumatized. Whitening in this situation may make the traumatized tooth/teeth more noticeable due to the increased contrast with other teeth after bleaching. Additionally, if you are planning new dental work, it may make sense to whiten the teeth before choosing a shade for your new dental restorations. The reason is that when whitening your teeth, dental restorations will not whiten with your teeth. For these reasons and many others, a discussion with your dentist may save you heartache and possibly money in the long run. Parents often point out a concern that their child’s front teeth are darker than back teeth. In children between the ages of 7 and 12 this is usually due to the contrast between baby teeth and permanent teeth. Baby teeth are typically lighter in color by multiple shades. The reason for this is differing thicknesses of the layers of the teeth which reflect light differently. Bleaching teeth at this stage is not advised because this would create a situation in which there will be more noticeable contrast each time a new tooth erupted. In fact, we recommend waiting until all baby teeth fall out before considering whitening. From the vantage point of the dental professional, we are looking for a product that whitens teeth effectively and lasts as long as possible. It should cause only minimal sensitivity (hopefully none) and have an easy delivery system. On that note, I will excuse myself to remove my trays and check out my new shade. The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. I

ntimacy wellness is a key ingredient of human health and happiness that is fundamental for healthy relationships and family stability. However, we are very fortunate to live in an era with numerous effective and proven options to solve these debilitating intimacy problems affecting millions of people. According to the medical literature, since 1999 the number of US women experiencing orgasm during intercourse declined from 56% to 46% and currently, 150 million men suffer from problems related ED (erectile disfunction). If not addressed, these problems can contribute to states of anxiety, depression, lack of self-esteem as well as self-confidence, which in themselves often perpetuate the disorder affecting the family unit.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Gray Divorce BY EVAN BARON he Baby Boomer generation has had a huge impact on many categories of American life; from music to art to technology. Those same boomers are now impacting family law as well. Statistics have shown that the overall divorce rate over the last 20 plus years has declined. This could be because the marriage rate has decreased as well. In spite of this overall decline in divorce, the rate for those couples over 50 has doubled over the same span of time. One out of every four divorces filed within the last few years were involving couples over 50. This increase in the divorce rate of these boomers, has led to the term “Gray Divorce”. There are probably many factors which have led to this increase. As this generation increases in age, more and more people are celebrating their 50th birthday and as such the over 50 population has increased. The greater the number of people, the greater the number of divorces. There are however other factors to be considered as well. People are generally living longer, which results in potentially very long marital relationships. As people age their prospective on life sometimes changes as well. Their mortality comes into issue and couples who are not happy in their marriage, no longer wish to remain together for the later part of their lives. Some couples wait until their children are grown and have established their own lives. Parents feel that after raising their children it is now “their time” to explore and enjoy life. Unfortunately, in many instances their spouse is not who they wish to share this experience with.

Finances are the most significant issues that accompany divorces for individuals in the later years of life. After years and years of working, owning a home and placing funds in retirement, the plans that were in the past shared, disappear with the signing of a Final Judgment granting the divorce. In Florida, equitable distribution of assets almost always results in an equal division between the parties. As a result, each will have only half of what they owned together. Expenses will increase as there will be the necessity of funding two residences. This often times leads to parents moving in with their children or taking in a roommate. In addition, because of the fact that the majority of their working years are behind them, they have less time to try and re-coup their losses. Homes, which are usually a couple’s largest asset, will often have to be sold. Monthly pension checks divided between the parties, often times resulting in a party having to continue working beyond the normal retirement age. There may be an alimony component which could cause additional financial complications. Although divorce proceedings for more mature adults can be less complicated due to the avoidance of child related issues, there are financial issues which less mature couples do not have to address. I strongly suggest that before decisions are made it would be best to discuss your concerns with an experienced family law attorney. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY s sheriff, I hold an important responsibility to protect our community’s children and encourage their positive development. The incredible people I meet around Broward leave me optimistic about our county’s future. I also know many potential obstacles await our next generation at every turn — and how even one small mistake could derail these young people from achieving their full potential. No one should have their future destroyed because of a minor, youthful indiscretion. Kids make mistakes and bad choices. It is part of growing up. Learning from those mistakes is what allows children to grow into productive members of society. For many, however, these minor indiscretions create far-reaching consequences that can amount to a life sentence of lost opportunities. This stark reality is even clearer in struggling working-class communities and communities of color, which are historically disproportionally impacted. As sheriff, I am promoting restorative justice programs that provide individuals who commit a minor offense with a second chance at leading a productive life. Instead of a permanent arrest record, which could severely limit opportunities in adulthood, a youth who commits a minor offense would enter a restorative justice program. These programs hold the offender to account, provide them with the assistance they need and teach them the discipline, structure, dignity and responsibility necessary to become productive citizens. These programs are a proven success, showing significantly lower recidivism rates among participants. They also save millions of dollars that would otherwise be spent on less effective juvenile criminal justice system operations. But these programs are not a mere slap on the wrist. Individuals who commit non-minor offenses and repeat offenders know they will feel the full force of the law. Our efforts are also focused on proactive measures to keep kids from committing crimes in the first place. I was raised largely by my mother in inner-city Philadelphia and understand both the detriment of not having mentors and of how many in minority communities distrust law enforcement. At BSO, we are tackling both issues through a host of bold initiatives. First, we are expanding our Law Enforcement Explorers Program, which exposes teenagers to positive values and role models. I will also be introducing the BSO Internship Initiative for individuals interested in a career in public safety. Too often, community members interact with deputies only at the worst of times. This program allows for a better understanding of our goals and mission — and allows us better insights into the communities we protect. In addition, because many struggle to pay for school, BSO is developing a criminal justice scholarship program to ease the financial burden. These scholarships are an investment in the future of law enforcement and our communities. Finally, I am reexamining how the money seized from the proceeds of criminal activity is distributed to community-based nonprofit organizations to support important local programs. Programs that benefit from this Law Enforcement Trust Fund are vital to our mission of connecting with youth and providing programs, mentorships and assistance to them. In the past, distribution was woefully inequitable, with a select few organizations receiving the bulk of the money. I don’t believe in playing favorites, and we will work to ensure that all qualified organizations receive a fair opportunity to compete for funds and that the money will be distributed equitably to the most deserving. I am humbled by the important role the Sheriff plays in the lives of our county’s children, and I pledge to do my all to ensure their future success. SUCCESS = REWARD You can stay connected by following the sheriff on Twitter @BrowardSheriff or emailing him directly at ask_the_sheriff@sheriff.org.

REAL ESTATE

Sellers: Set the Stage BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR ast month my article made suggestions regarding home sellers and how they could get the most “bang for their buck.” This month I am turning to home buyers -- how they can achieve their real estate goals in the least amount of time by using an experienced real estate agent. There are four requirements of a real estate agent from buyers today: ▸▸ Honesty ▸▸ Trustworthiness ▸▸ Experience ▸▸ Reputation Other factors include: ▸▸ Knowledge of the area ▸▸ Caring personality and great listener ▸▸ Timely with texts and phone calls ▸▸ Technologically knowledgeable ▸▸ Associated with a reputable company ▸▸ Active in the community ▸▸ Professional designations Eighty-seven percent of all buyers purchased their home through a real estate agent—and 92 percent among buyers 28 and younger, according to NAR. The biggest benefit was the help provided understanding the process. Buyers appreciated agents who pointed out unnoticed features and faults with the property. When it came to negotiations, buyers need an experienced agent who has written many, many offers and closed many, many deals. Understanding the timeline that keeps a buyer on track and his earnest monies timely deposited are just a few reasons. The inspection deadline is critical as well. An experienced agent knows her market and will have alerts sent to her and the buyer when a home is placed on the market that fits the buyer’s criteria. The agent will recommend expanding or narrowing a search to get the buyer into that home in the shortest possible time frame. The agent may recommend websites that will further assist the buyer in his home-search process – websites such as city sites, school sites and community resources. Financing is key unless the buyer is paying cash. If the buyer is paying cash, referring him back to his financial advisor to make sure that the cash deal is in the best interest of the buyer is critical. While money is still inexpensive to borrow, the financial advisor may recommend not putting all the buyer’s eggs in one basket – and may recommend securing a mortgage on the property. The experienced agent can provide a list of mortgage brokers or lenders who can “get the job done and get the deal closed” as well as recommend reputable title companies and attorneys. Other recommendations would be a list of qualified professional home inspectors and repairmen. According to NAR, most buyers, regardless of their age group, found a real estate agent by receiving a referral from a friend, neighbor, or relative. Sixty-eight percent of buyers interviewed only one real estate agent. With all the disclosures and addenda which make up the contract package as well as the negotiations, a buyer would best work with a real estate agent who is familiar with the procedures and changing laws. A part-time agent who works another job is not likely to keep up with the day-to-day changes in the industry. Professionalism, knowledge and responsiveness in a real estate agent are key in getting a buyer to the closing table. There’s so much you can do yourself, and there are professionals whom you can hire. Regardless, a home is more marketable if the Seller sets the stage with his Realtor’s guidance!
