Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Laurie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Stephanie or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at: WindmillHealth@att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

A Little Turbulence on Your Flight?

W

e love to travel. In fact, we fly to exotic and not-so-exotic locations, both close to home and around the world, on a fairly regular basis. Despite our love of travel, Christy is not a fan of bumpy flights. For her, a little bit of turbulence will create enough anxiety to set flight attendants off for a glass or two of wine! This makes us all the more thankful for the brave men and women who routinely fly into the world’s most turbulent skies. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), along with the U.S. Air Force, maintain a fleet of aircraft known as the “hurricane hunters.” These modified warplanes routinely fly in the opposite direction of rational human beings to collect data as hurricanes approach populated areas. A typical mission keeps the aircrew off the ground for 11 hours. That is about the time it would take to fly from Miami to Moscow! Imagine the roller coaster ride these dedicated public servants are on flying through a hurricane. The aircraft used for these incredibly important missions are modified C-130 cargo planes and P-3 Orion submarine hunters. Both were chosen because of incredibly reliable service records and the fact that they are slow. Fast, high-altitude jets are not very useful for collecting atmospheric condition data; however, slow propellerdriven planes are perfect. Unless, you have motion sickness. The planes use a number of radars, instruments and “drop” devices to collect a myriad of data. These data are uploaded, in near real-time, to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Forecasts and hurricane track projections using Hurricane Hunter data are as much as 30% more accurate than just satellite and radar projections. So, the next time your flight is a little bit bumpy and the captain turns on the fasten seatbelt sign, be thankful for that Hurricane Hunter flight crew of six, flying 10,000 feet above a stormy sea in winds that would knock over an apartment building! We know we are.

F

or nearly 15 years, Broward Tutorial Services has helped students achieve academic success in the classroom and on the SAT and ACT college entrance exams. It is the area’s leading provider of college entrance test preparation tutoring. Founder and Owner Michael Eldeiry, and Director of Academics Adam Moss, answered some commonly asked questions about Broward Tutorial Services’ programs and success strategies. What is Broward Tutorial Services? We are Broward County’s premier test prep company for the ACT, SAT and PSAT. We work with students at all levels to help them reach their highest potential. We offer exceptional small group and private one-on-one tutoring as well as one-day workshops to help students prepare for these critical exams. In addition, we offer subject tutoring primarily for high school students. Where is BTS located? We are excited to announce that, beginning in July 2019, we will have two locations: Weston and Davie. Our current office is located in Weston, at Executive Park Drive and Weston Road, just north of the Cleveland Clinic. Our second location, opening this summer, is located in the University Office Park on University Drive in Davie, between Stirling and Griffin. The two locations will offer flexibility for our clients and expanded computer and testing facilities. All tutors will be available to meet at both locations, and group classes and private lessons will be offered at both offices. What are the SAT and ACT and why are they so important? The SAT and ACT are standardized tests required for entrance to most competitive colleges and universities. They are commonly taken by students in their

Broward Tutorial Services

Set To Open Davie Location junior and senior years of high school. Both tests are accepted equally by all institutions. How does a student know which test to take? The best way to really know which test is right is to have the student take a diagnostic test, which combines half of each test and provides both a baseline score for each and a comparison of which test is better for the student. The SAT is a shorter, less time constrained test with harder reading and more algebra, while the ACT has a stricter time limit and a science section devoted to reading charts and graphs, which can intimidate some students. Another good way to determine which test is better for a student is to have them take each test. What is the timeline to prepare for the exams? We like our students to begin as early as possible in their junior year, and many students start during the summer between their sophomore and junior year. Most students have to take the tests a few times to achieve their maximum score, so waiting until the end of junior year or senior year is not a great idea. We encourage students to start with the diagnostic

test to see which test is better for them, and then begin with a group class. In the end, every student is different. Lisa Cohen, our Office Manager and Higher Education Advisor, talks to parents and students to personalize a plan for each student. What do students learn from your program? Students learn all the strategies for how to excel on the standardized test they are taking. We also review the material on which they are being tested. Standardized tests cover most of high school math, so students often need to review some things they haven’t seen since middle school. Students also need to learn how to approach these tests, as they are very different from the tests they are used to in school. What kinds of results can students expect after completing the program? That depends on several factors, most of all on how much work the student puts in to practicing the techniques we teach them. It’s not unusual for students who work hard in our class to improve between 200 and 500 points on the SAT and from three to eight points on the ACT. What are the benefits to test preparation? Higher SAT and ACT scores are the second most important factor (behind grades) for admission into college. High scores may also result in both private and school-sponsored scholarship money, including Florida Bright Futures, and placement into higher classes once at college. What distinguishes Broward Tutorial Services from other test prep programs? Broward Tutorial Services was founded in 2004 on a simple premise: all test preparation and tutoring programs are only as good as the teacher. Our team of tutors has spent extensive time studying the tests, analyzing the mistakes students make, and uncovering the traps that test writers like to set. n Broward Tutorial Services’ Weston office is located at 2883 Executive Park Drive, Suite 104. The Davie office, which opens in July, will be at 5400 S. University Drive, Suite 508. For more information on the tutors and the company, call 954-667-6500 or visit www.BrowardTutorial.com. With their forces combined, the teens were able to organize and produce an impactful event. “Our local youth united and worked together bridging the gap between faiths and cultures resonating our message of ‘unity in diversity’,” states Nikolas. He says one of the most impactful moments was the pre-race silent prayer. “I still get emotional as I recall the quiet peace that took over the event when the 14 diverse religious leaders made a circle and held hands in solidarity. Then everyone else united and held hands as well like a human chain.” While there were at least 1,000 people in attendance, Nikolas says it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. Plans are already in the works for the 2020 Unity in Diversity 5K. The boys consider their inaugural event a huge success, uniting diverse youth from ten different schools, along with adults and families of all faiths, bringing beliefs and cultures together in peaceful harmony. “Through this yearly event, we will continue to raise the bar growing larger each year by bringing other diverse faiths on board,” notes Nikolas. “In our small town of Southwest Ranches, we can serve LE HANDS TT

he Town of Southwest Ranches is a diverse community, both culturally and religiously. The community’s “church row” is home to almost every faith with churches, temples, parishes, synagogues and mosques clustered around Flamingo and Griffin Roads. While the houses of worship coexist, so too does the community thanks to events such as the interfaith “Unity in Diversity” 5K. The race, which was organized by local students, attracted more than 500 runners, united over 200 students, brought 14 religious leaders together in prayer, and raised $10,000 for the Southwest Ranches College Scholarship Fund. “Today’s youth recognizes that everyone is unique in their own way, however, we want to find common ground and shed light on what holds us all together,” explains Jashanpreet Singh, Co-President of the Sikh Society of Florida Youth Association. Co-President Pavitpaul Singh says the Sikh Youth Association partnered with Southwest Ranches on this event to raise scholarship funds while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

Hurricane Season is Here – Be Prepared BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he 2019 Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1st and runs through November 30th. Early predictions are for an average to slightly-above average season in terms of activity. Experts from Colorado State University’s hurricane research team forecast 13 named storms of which five will become hurricanes and two will become major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger). For comparison, during an average hurricane season there are 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes. While the number of storms predicted this year is close to normal, the overall activity – based on the intensity of storms and their energy – is expected to be slightly below average. “This year, we think that there will be a few less tropical storms and lower numbers in hurricanes, but again, the old saying is ‘it only takes one’,” cautions AccuWeather Atlantic Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski. That being said, now is the time to start preparing your family and your home for hurricane season. The first thing you should do is put together your hurricane supply kit, stocked with all the essentials you will need to provide for your family during and following a storm. Be sure to include flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries, first

aid supplies, cash, food and water, and copies of all critical documents. You should also create a family emergency communication plan; know how to get in touch with each other, especially if phone or internet service is knocked out. Register for text and/or email alerts for emergency notifications.

Prepare your home by trimming tree branches and limbs and securing and clearing rain gutters and downspouts. Now is also the time to make sure your hurricane shutters are in proper working order. The beginning of hurricane season is also a good time to familiarize yourself with the terminology. It’s important that you understand exactly what the meteorologists and newscasters are saying and what that means. Here are some of the most common terms as defined by the National Hurricane Center: Tropical Cyclone – an organized rotating system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has a closed lowlevel circulation Tropical Storm – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph Hurricane – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher; a major hurricane is when winds are 111 mph or higher Hurricane Warning – hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected in an area; issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset Hurricane Watch – hurricane conditions are possible; issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

What’s In Your Bag?

A

s we enter hurricane season, it’s essential that every family have a fully-stocked emergency supply kit. After a hurricane, or other emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days until aid can arrive. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that everyone have enough food, water and necessities to last for three to five days. A basic emergency supply kit should contain one gallon of water per person per day to use for drinking and sanita-

tion. You should also have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for each person, along with a can opener. That includes baby formula and baby food. You also want to include mess kits or paper goods and plastic eating utensils. Every emergency kit should have a battery-powered or hand crank radio, preferably a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries. Flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries are also essential. Other necessities include a first aid kit, whistle to signal for help, and household cleaning supplies including garbage bags. You may need to go several days without running water, so it’s good to stock moist towelettes along with other personal hygiene items. Be sure to include a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

and make sure you have charcoal or propane for the grill. While that’s what you need for a basic hurricane supply kit, FEMA does have a list of extra items you should consider adding. Be sure to include eyeglasses and any prescription medication you or someone in the family needs. If you have a baby, your kit should include baby care items such as disposable diapers and wipes. Don’t forget to prepare for your pet’s care as well with pet food and extra water. It’s a good idea to include sleeping bags or blankets and pillows for each member of the family. Your kit should

also contain a change of clothing for every member of the family, including sturdy shoes as there may be a lot of debris. Emergency kits should also include an extra set of car keys, cash because ATM’s and credit card devices might not work without power, and books, games, puzzles and other activities to keep entertained if there is no TV or internet. Lastly, make sure to gather all important documents in waterproof containers. This includes emergency contact numbers, insurance policies (home, auto, life, etc.), medical records, bank account numbers, etc. FEMA recommends you store items in airtight plastic bags and put the entire hurricane supply kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag. n For more tips on what to include in a hurricane supply kit visit www. ready.gov/build-a-kit.

Staying Safe During South Florida’s Summer Season

S

ummer is synonymous with fun in the sun – kids playing outside, time at the beach or pool and family vacations. And with the increased physical activity, the chance of injuries can also rise. So what are some of the most common injuries during the summer that cause minor emergencies and require urgent care? Baptist Health Urgent Care personnel see a wide variety of injuries during the summer months, ranging from dehydration and sunburn to cuts and sprains and even upper respiratory infections. Healthcare professionals at Baptist Health Urgent Care locations say they definitely attribute the uptick in certain conditions to the summer heat and increase of outdoor physical activity. Some of the most common minor emergencies they treat this time of year are:

Remember to always use sunblock and stay hydrated, especially if spending long periods of time outdoors. ▸▸ Cuts, Sprains and Fracture - Lacerations that need stitches, sprains that can be treated with slings or crutches and broken bones diagnosed by x-ray. ▸▸ Gastrointestinal Issues - The U.S. Department of Agriculture report an increase in food-borne illness un the summer months. Outdoor cookouts and the associated heat and humidity make them the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. ▸▸ Insect Bites and Stings - More time outdoors means more chances of getting a bite or sting from mosquitoes, spiders and fire ants. Seek immediate attention if severe allergic reactions such as facial swelling, difficulty breathing or weakness occur. ▸▸ Sunburns - Most sunburns can be relieved with at-home remedies such as aloe vera and ibuprofen. A sunburn that results in blistering, extreme pain or chills should prompt a visit to the nearest urgent care facility.

Children’s Health in the Summer Summertime for kids also means a break from school and more time outdoors. Unfortunately, the increased activity can also mean more injuries. Bicycle-related injuries are one of the most common, according to a study by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy. It found that more than 2.2 million children were treated in U.S. emergency departments for bicyclerelated injuries between 2006 and 2015. Boys ages 10 to 14 are the most likely to be injured, the study says, and the majority of the injuries are bruises, scrapes and cuts. Bicyclists should always wear a helmet. Asthma in kids is another condition that requires attention during the summer months. Heat and humidity and seasonal allergies to summertime blooms can activate asthma. If a child is having a non-severe asthma attack, Baptist Health Urgent Care providers suggest bringing them to a nearby facility to be checked and prescribed inhalers, if needed. And when they’re getting ready to return to school in the fall, many kids need back-to-school physicals. Thorough physical exams and sports physicals are available at Baptist Health Urgent Care Express locations.

roward public high schools ranked in the top 25% of Florida and national high schools according to U.S. News’ latest list - 2019 Best High Schools. Top public and charter schools on this year’s list included the William T. McFatter Technical Center in Davie, The Somerset Arts Conservatory, Cypress Bay High School and Somerset Academy Charter School and Nova High School. According to U.S. News, the 2019 Best High Schools rankings results aren’t comparable to rankings published in the past for several reasons. This year’s methodology produced a numerical ranking for 17,245 (1,081 in Florida) high schools based almost entirely on standardized test scores and the portion of students passing Advanced Placement (AP or IB) tests. Schools were analyzed and ranked based on: • The proportion of students who took and passed AP/IB exams • The proportion of seniors who took and passed multiple AP/IB exams • Math and reading proficiency, based on standardized test scores • Underserved student performance – How black, Hispanics and low-income students

performed on standardized tests compared with students who are not underserved • Four-year graduation rates

ASK THE EXPERT

Timing of Tooth Eruption BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

O

ne of the most common anxieties parents share with us concerns the timing of the eruption of teeth. We are often asked: when are the first teeth scheduled to enter the mouth? or which is “better” late vs. early erupting teeth? The truth of the matter is that although there are published milestones, there is still a normal variation/range that teeth may be expected to erupt. In terms of which is better, there is no real benefit for early or late eruption. However, extreme deviations may cause a practical challenge as

we will discuss. Let’s start with the primary (or “baby”) teeth. The first primary tooth to erupt is usually the lower central incisor between 5-8 months of age. The teeth will then follow the “rule of twos” which is that two additional teeth will erupt every two months until around 2-2.5 yrs old. There is a total of 20 primary teeth equally divided between upper and lower arches. After the eruption of the lower central incisors, we will see the eruption of the upper central incisors, the lower lateral incisors (as the name suggests, next to the central incisors) followed by the upper lateral incisors. The pattern will continue from center laterally with the lower erupting earlier than the upper counterparts. Premature eruption of primary teeth occurs in 1:2000. This can occur in two ways. “Natal” teeth are present at birth and “prenatal” teeth erupt in the first 30 days of life. When teeth erupt prematurely, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider (pediatrician or pediatric dentist) as strategies for feeding will need to be addressed, especially if breastfeeding is planned. There are also structures which are present at birth which resemble premature teeth, but are actually not the primary teeth. One of the most common examples of this is “Epstein pearls”. They are visible cysts located in the upper arch in the front close to where the primary teeth are expected to be positioned. There is no treatment recommended for this as long as there is no interference with feeding and no observed discomfort for the child. As with all published milestones, it is important to acknowledge the fact that these are just averages and that “normal” has a range. We find variation in gender, with females being ahead of males. It is also important to note that deviations in one area may have no bearing on others. For example, there are many children who are either “ahead” or “behind” in dental development but are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in skeletal growth. They do, however, give us an idea of what to plan for and some guidance on timing of interventional treatment, whether dental or orthodontic, when indicated. . The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Help-U-Sell Broward Realty: Not Only Sells Houses but Saves U $$$ BY BEVERLY PERKINS

O

ver four decades ago, Help-U-Sell® Real Estate was created as an alternative to traditional real estate agencies. Since it’s opening, it has become the leading fee-for-service real estate franchise with more than 100 offices including a local franchise in Plantation. Help-U-Sell’s® unique business model allows consumers to save thousands of dollars compared to what they would spend on a traditional broker’s fees. However, these savings do not translate to a reduction in services. Help-U-Sell Broward Realty, a fully licensed Florida Real Estate Brokerage, offers full premium service to all of their clients regardless of the size of the property or the selling price of the home. Their licensed professionals manage the entire selling process from start to finish, handle all negotiations, provide referrals, show their Seller’s homes, and provide expert advice and representation. Help-U-Sell Broward Realty’s fresh approach to selling a home has been valuable to so many that Brian Meyerowitz, the Managing Broker for the local Help-U-Sell® office, took some time to share more about his franchise so he can help others achieve the same results.

What distinguishes Help-U-Sell Broward Realty from the competition? Our platform is unique. We don’t charge the consumer based on the price of the home. We don’t believe that the price of the home should dictate the fee paid. For example, we never understood why an “ordinary” brokerage charges substantially more to sell a $500,000 home versus a $300,000 home. It is illogical, and unfair to the consumer. Help-U-Sell Broward Realty offers a fair, low set fee regardless of the price of the home.* Although we only charge a low set fee (due at closing) we pride ourselves on providing premium full-service representation with a personal touch from the beginning to the end of the transaction. What are some of the things you offer your clients? First, we do an in-home consultation. We then create a full marketing program to include the MLS, Realtor.com, Zillow, Trulia, and other popular real estate sites. We will dispatch a professional photographer, videographer, and a drone pilot to come to your home and take photos, a virtual tour, and an aerial tour on ALL listings. Next, we will coordinate and manage paperwork, inspections, appraisals, and anything else needed. What else would you like to share with our readers? Previously, in conjunction with my real estate practice, I owned a full-service mortgage broker-

age. We sold that practice, and now fully concentrate on real estate. However, our prior experience in the mortgage business is invaluable to our Sellers. For example, we know the proper questions to ask the Buyer’s lender in order to minimize risks during the transaction. This knowledge is critical to keeping a deal together. We help Buyers too. In fact, our “Smart Buy” program provides many Buyer benefits including assistance paying some of the fees associated with a typical purchase transaction. Any final thoughts? I have also served 18 consecutive years as a judge on the Professional Standards Committee. That means that I conduct ethics hearings when disputes between two local brokerages arise. This is an appointed position by the Board of Realtors. The time I spend helping to resolve disputes is performed “probono”. I love giving back to the Realtor community. For more information or a complimentary home consultation, please contact Help-U-Sell Broward Realty at 954-727-8218 or call Brian Meyerowitz, the Managing Broker directly at 954-470-3444. You may also visit the website at www. HelpUSellBroward.com *Broker/co-op fees may apply. Fees vary for luxury properties.

f you are tired of going to your primary care doctor’s office every few months to get a prescription refill for your current medical condition, it may be time to change doctors. Conventional medicine continues to deal with chronic illness by targeting symptoms without really taking the time to investigate what is causing the problem in the first place. This is the biggest difference between a traditional medical practice and the type of service you will find at a functional medicine office. Functional medicine focuses on the patient as a whole and not just on symptoms. Our mission is to study the patient’s medical history as well as family history and all possible factors that are contributing to disease so we can treat the root cause of the problem. It is all about recreating balance. Do not get me wrong, there are conditions that are so serious they must be addressed immediately, but this doesn’t mean we should ignore the origin of the disease. If we only treat symptoms and ignore the underlying causes, we enter a never-ending cycle of pill-popping that will eventually affect organs and other areas of health. If a patient comes in with high cholesterol, for example, we do not need to immediately rush for the prescriptive medication to treat the condition, rather we need to investigate what is causing the anomaly. Is it the family history or the patient’s lifestyle—in many cases it is a combination of factors. Changes in lifestyle, diet and nutraceuticals (medical grade – natural supplements) may be enough to control cholesterol so it is critical we identify the possible triggers and emphasize the importance of “prevention.” A traditional doctor will tell patients that they need to eat healthier but many patients don’t even know where to start or what “healthy” even means. At a Functional Medicine Practice, lifestyle—including your food choices—are part of the conversation at every visit because we can’t ignore the importance of these factors in overall wellness and health. One growing area in the medical field is that of hormone replacement. This is where Bellissimo Medical stands out as a functional medicine practice, as we specialize in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy for both men and women. This treatment has been used effectively worldwide since the 1930s and numerous scientific studies have proven its effectiveness. However, patients need to work with qualified practitioners because hormones are a delicate subject and not everyone is trained to provide this service. Bio-identical hormones, also known as natural hormones, are substances that have the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by the human body. Because these are naturally occurring substances that are found in us all, they produce the same physiologic response and there are virtually no side effects. Although they can bring about many health benefits and improved quality of life to those who need it, we will never prescribe hormones unless absolutely necessary. We will evaluate the patient’s current health condition and learn about their medical history to be able to develop a comprehensive program that targets unique needs. Hormone levels are tested before, during and after the treatment to ensure these are maintained at optimum balance. n Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Bellissimo Medical LLC is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For information, visit www.BellissimoMedical.com

ASK THE MAYOR

Our Town, Davie BY MAYOR JUDY PAUL ecently Ft. Lauderdale police implemented a program, FLPD Cares that alerts first responders that an individual with autism resides at a location. This information is obtained voluntarily from the family and provides first responders with critical information that they otherwise would not have. We along with all other police agencies in Broward County are joining this initiative. Florida leads the country in drowning deaths of children ages 1 to 4. On April 19th another child almost lost their life while swimming. An off-duty Plantation Police Officer, Chad Fowler, heard cries for help from a neighbor who just pulled their unconscious young child from a pool. He began CPR and was able to restart the child’s heart before fire rescue arrived. This incident is a perfect example of why bystanders need to learn CPR. Bystanders have the power to save lives in many emergency incidents such as by performing CPR, using an AED and controlling bleeding with Stop the Bleed. The Town uses an educational campaign called “SaferBy4” that teaches water safety including supervision, barriers, and emergency preparedness to save lives, the campaign also teaches infant safe sleep practices. The Fire Rescue Department teaches CPR courses the first Wednesday of every month and reviews CPR, AED and Stop the Bleed. Fire Chief Julie Downey calls bystanders the “true first responders” as they are first at the emergency scene and should be given the proper education to save a life. I am thankful for Officer Fowler having the proper training, being nearby that day and using his skills so well to save a young life. Officer Fowler will be honored at our June 5 council meeting. If you don’t know how to respond in an emergency, please call Davie fire rescue admin at (954) 797-1213. The town’s Public Affairs Academy interns from Western High School completed their project for the dual naming of 139th Ave. The dedication and unveiling of the Wild Cat Way signs was held on Thursday May 23. This was a great experience working with multiple agencies and seeing the project from inception to completion. Good job!! I presented the Mayor’s scholarships at awards assemblies in May and was so pleased to be able to give out four $500.00 checks. The recipients were Elise Gregg from McFatter and Samantha Garcia, Patricia Avila and Andrei Santos from Western High. Congratulations to all our award winners, scholarship recipients and graduates. The best is yet to come!! The Town of Davie is committed to ensuring the sustainability of our community’s resources and environment. From the preservation of the Town’s rural heritage to raising awareness about climate change, community-wide action is necessary to fulfill this important goal. The Sustainability Awards are intended to help honor individuals, businesses, schools, and non-profit organizations that are promoting sustainability within our neighborhood. Residents are asked to nominate a neighbor, business, school, non-profit organization or themselves, for implementing sustainable strategies and initiatives in their neighborhood, home, school or business throughout the Town of Davie. Nomination forms are accepted now through Friday, June 28, 2019. Please send completed nomination forms to Lise Bazinet at lbazinet@davie-fl. gov or drop them off in person to the Planning and Zoning Office (Building B), 6591 Orange Drive. Areas for consideration are: Green Building Design, Renewable Energy or Energy Efficiency, Solid Waste Reduction/Composting/Recycling, School Gardens and/or Projects, Transportation Options, Water Quality and Conservation, Climate Change, Sustainable Landscaping, Provision of Green Products or Services, Local Food Systems, Environmental Preservation, Pollution Prevention and or Reduction, Natural Resource Restoration, Invasive Plants Control, Cleanup and Beautification, Education and Awareness, Volunteer Work, or any related sustainability efforts.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Divorce Has Become A Generational Issue BY EVAN BARON previously wrote an article discussing the rise in “grey divorces”, which are divorces for people in their 50’ and older. Statistics have shown that from 1990 to 2015 divorce rates had doubled for people 55 to 64 and had tripled for individuals 65 and older. There are many theories as to why this increase occurred for this age group. “Baby Boomers” tended to marry at a young age and upon becoming empty nesters, realized they were no longer compatible with their spouses. Women in the work force now had the financial freedom to move on with their lives, without having to necessarily depend upon their spouse to support them. People were now living longer and so a long-term marriage took on a different meaning. However, the exact opposite is happening with Generation X and Millennials. The overall divorce rate has fallen 18 percent from 2008 to 2016. There are several theories as to why this is happening. Couples are now getting married at an older age, after they have established their careers. The cost of obtaining a college or post graduate degree also has had an impact. Two individuals with large college loans to pay back are less likely to “tie the knot” until they are earning a salary sufficient to pay their loans and start a family. Most couples in that age group that I know have decided to live together before they make their marriage commitment. Marriages later in life, has proven to result in fewer divorces.

The marriage rate during that time has fallen as well. Less marriages should mean less divorces. If couples get married later in life, the chance of a marriage lasting seems to be greatly enhanced. Statistics also show that more highly educated couples who marry later in life have a greater chance of staying married. The decline in the marriage rate explains the increase of Paternity cases that I have seen in my practice. Individuals who decide not to marry may still want to raise a family, sometimes with the expectation that having a child will result in marriage. When the relationship fails, issues concerning minor children need to be addressed. In Florida, if a child is born outside of marriage, the Father may have no rights without a court order declaring him to be the father. Once Paternity is established the father would have all the same legal rights and responsibilities that any father would have if the parents had been married. From the flu to chest pains – Cleveland Clinic Florida offers world-class care for all of your medical needs Know the best place to go in an emergency situation If your elderly father fell and appeared to have a broken arm, you’d most likely take him to the nearest emergency room. But what if your spouse developed an itchy leg rash overnight? Or you came down with a stomach bug? Some situations are clear-cut emergencies, while others are not. It can sometimes be tough to know the best place to go for medical help in an urgent situation. Here’s a guide:

“Our Express Care Clinics provide access to Cleveland Clinic Florida’s board-certified physicians, as well as other healthcare providers for non-life-threatening urgent medical needs,” says Frank Eidelman, MD, Director of the Center for Medical Specialties and Chairman of the Department of Allergy and Immunology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. “They are convenient and cost-effective alternatives to the emergency room where we can expertly and efficiently diagnose and treat a host of injuries and illnesses requiring urgent attention.”

Emergency Rooms Hospital emergency rooms will treat all injuries, but they are the best place to go for serious injuries or life-threatening medical situations. Some examples of reasons for which you should go to a hospital emergency room (ER) include: • Chest pain and/or shortness of breath • Stroke symptoms • Uncontrolled or excessive bleeding and wounds needing stitches • Broken bones and head injuries • Severe burns • Poisoning • Suicidal feelings • Accidents (car crashes, falls)

Should you drive to the hospital or call 911 for an ambulance? An ambulance is the quickest and safest way to go to the ER for lifethreatening injuries or illnesses. The paramedics on board can administer life-saving treatment and determine the best hospital to treat the injuries.

Cleveland Clinic Florida Expands its Emergency Services Department

Express Care Locations Serving South Florida Cleveland Clinic Florida has Express Care locations to serve you in Weston, Parkland, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington. Visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ExpressCare for more information.

Express Care Online® For some health concerns, you may see a healthcare provider live without even leaving your house by using your smartphone, tablet or computer. You may receive a diagnosis and a prescription, if appropriate. Express Care Online® may be utilized for some conditions, including the following: • Seasonal allergies; bronchitis; cold, cough and flu symptoms; sinus infections • Back strains • Rashes • Painful urination • Acute vaginitis

In October 2018, Cleveland Clinic Florida opened a new hospital tower and expanded emergency services department at its Weston medical campus at 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd. With 42 emergency bays and the addition of 50 beds and a walk-in center, the department will be able to serve an expected 70,000 patients annually with continued timely high-quality emergency care.

Express Care Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Express Care Clinics, similar to walk-in clinics, handle less serious non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that need treatment within 24 hours (not immediately). Like ERs, they do not require an appointment, but wait times are generally shorter. And, unlike other walk-in clinics, a trip to a Cleveland Clinic Florida Express Care Clinic will cost the same as an appointment with your primary care doctor. Some conditions for which you should go to an Express Care Clinic include: • Sprains and minor injuries • Eye or sinus infections; cold, cough and flu symptoms • Minor cuts, burns, rashes and skin injuries not requiring stitches • Urinary tract and sexually transmitted infections • Insect bites and stings

Download the Cleveland Clinic Express Care Online® app to connect with a doctor. Visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ECO

Primary Care For any new health concerns that don’t require immediate attention, a primary care provider (PCP) can help. Most Cleveland Clinic Florida PCPs offer same-day appointments. In addition to helping when a medical issue arises, PCPs are partners in their patients’ day-to-day health and wellness. By knowing a patient’s overall health and personal and family medical histories, PCPs can help patients address multiple healthcare needs and navigate the healthcare system. To make an appointment with a Cleveland Clinic Florida PCP, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Appointment.

BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY ll men are created equal. No matter how hard they try, they can never erase those words. That is what America is about.”—Harvey Milk, slain LGBT rights champion This month, we honor the 50th anniversary of the momentous Stonewall riots. The series of demonstrations did more to advance the cause of equal rights for gay Americans than any other single event in U.S. history and sparked a movement that continues today. We celebrate the achievements and social progress of the gay community during Pride Month, but we do so with an eye toward the future — mindful that the fight for equality is never easy or complete. At the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we honor our LGBT employees in all areas of our organization. Deputy Josh Sapp’s story epitomizes what we strive to achieve at BSO. The six year law enforcement veteran began his career at a police department where he was suspected of being gay and subsequently shown disrespect for who and how he chose to love. But when Josh started his career at BSO, he found a home that measures his value on quality of work and content of character, not sexual orientation. Deputy Sapp is currently assigned to the DUI Task Force, working with an important team of deputies to keep impaired drivers off our roadways. As sheriff, I play an important role in protecting the rights of all Broward’s nearly two million residents. As Broward’s first African American sheriff, and as a person who has experienced inequality firsthand, it is a role I fully embrace. I know the fight for equality is not a fight for any one group or individual — it is a fight for the rights of all Americans. Those rights are preserved in our Constitution and are part of the moral fabric of this nation. Yet, despite the efforts of many, there is still much work to be done to ensure equality and acceptance for all. We must recognize that what makes us different is also what makes us special — and makes us stronger. Each and every one of us brings a different perspective and uniqueness to our communities. No one person or group of people is better than or inferior to another. As sheriff, I instill in the men and women of BSO to be blind to color, to treat everyone as equals and never turn a blind eye to the injustices and inequities affecting our diverse communities. Everyone, regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual identity, deserves the same opportunities, the same level of respect and the same rights as everyone else. Please join me and the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office on June 15 in Wilton Manors for the Stonewall Pride Parade and Festival as we celebrate the LGBT movement and equality for all. For more information, please visit our community events calendar at sheriff.org. SUCCESS = REWARD You can stay connected by following the sheriff on Twitter @BrowardSheriff or emailing him directly at ask_the_sheriff@sheriff.org.

REAL ESTATE

“BRADY” Making a Home Purchase? Consumer Confidence is Up! BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR esearch. It’s the first place we start if we are thinking about a major purchase. A new home certainly fits into the category of a “major purchase” -- so • We hit the internet • We ask our friends and family • We get opinions and insights • We listen to the news • We consult with our financial planner, and then • We peruse through neighborhoods, then • We get confused, perplexed, frustrated, and scared. Then a sense of “overwhelm” sets in. Opinions and comments from “wellmeaning” friends and family typically contradict sound data and economists’ reports. However, a smart group of homebuyers do not allow the negativity to influence their process. “Nearly 70 percent of home shoppers this spring think the U.S. will enter a recession in the next three years, but that hasn’t stopped them from trying to close on a home. Despite the fact that they foresee an economic downturn, they generally expressed confidence that a future recession will be better than 2008 for the housing market.” Further, the National Association of Realtors® surveyed home buyers: • Nearly 30% of the active home shoppers expect the next recession to begin sometime in 2020. • 56% of shoppers believe home prices have hit their peak. • 41% believe housing will fare better than 2008. • 45% feel at least slightly more optimistic about homeownership. • 33% reported no impact on their feelings about homeownership. If you are considering buying a home, the best recommendation would be to sit down with a local real estate professional who can help you: 1. Understand your local market 2. Explain the process 3. Get in touch with financing professionals with a proven track record 4. Recommend other professionals, such as inspectors and attorneys 5. Determine if buying a home is the right choice for you at this point in your life. The best news for 2019: According to the latest NAR magazine states, “Consumer confidence remains high, and many people are saying now is a good time to buy. Inventory is also increasing, reducing buyers’ concerns they’ll be elbowed out of the way when they try to buy.” Thirty-seven percent of consumers strongly believe now is a good time to buy, according to National Association of REALTORS® figures for the first quarter of 2019, up from 34 percent in the prior quarter. Low mortgage rates help; however, a good economy and more inventory are also boosting consumers’ outlooks. Now that buyer interest is up, home prices will rise. Therefore, now is a great time to put your home on the market. As inventories rise, so does competition for sellers as buyers have more choices. Just as encouraging, people’s wage growth will outpace home-price appreciation for the first time since 2010. This is all good news, but we still need more supply. The permitting process needs to lighten up in South Florida to encourage builders to ramp up production – especially for homes under $500,000. Regardless, because of heightened consumer confidence, it’s a great time to buy and an even better time to sell.

CAND DO KID

Eagle Scout Builds New, Improved Fire Pit at the Old Davie School Historical Museum BY JON DUKA

E

agle scout, Alex Andreozzi led a team of volunteers to rebuild the fire pit area at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. The service project is one of the last steps prior to attaining scouting’s highest rank. Andreozzi orgainzed a team of volunteers to clear out the area, build new seating and fix stonework.

An Eagle Scout Service Project, or Eagle Project, is an opportunity for a Boy Scout to demonstrate his leadership capabilities while leading a project that benefits the community. In many ways it is the last step of a Scout’s leadership training and requires significant effort. Projects must benefit organizations

outside the Boy Scouts of America and can not be done on behalf of a business or individual. In order to attain the rank of Eagle a Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges covering life skills like first aid, cooking and citizenship. They must also serve in leadership roles with in their troop and plan, develop and lead a service project. The Boy Scout Handbook states, “while a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or your community. (The project must benefit an organization other than Boy Scouting.)” The service project requirement has been in place since 1965. Since then, over 2 million scouts have earned the rank, having volunteered more than 100 million hours of community service according to the National Eagle Scout Association.
