Don’t Let Rain Dampen Summer Fun!
S
ummer in South Florida means heat, humidity and lots of rain. According to USClimateData.com, average rainfall in Broward County almost triples during the summer months. In fact, we average almost nine inches of rain each month. Lucky for us, there are plenty of things to do when Mother Nature does not cooperate. There are museums and art galleries for every interest, from paintings by talented local artists at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines to the dynamic and bright CultureScapes at Young At Art Museum in Davie. Children universally love Fort Lauderdale’s hands-on Museum of Discovery and Science, while adults may prefer the Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection, which offers “the largest eclectic transportation collection” in the world, or the Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum, which provides a look back in automotive time. Rainy days are the perfect time to explore new interests. Try a yoga or spin class, jump around at an indoor trampoline park, or learn how to blow glass at Hollywood Hot Glass on Young Circle. The possibilities are endless. So, next time the weather puts a damper on your outdoor plans, explore all the fun and interesting indoor options available to us. Sincerely, & Terry & Christy Jaillet Co-Presidents and Publishers

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 7/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Ana or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. or nearly 60 years, Barbie has been a cultural icon. She has evolved with the times and kept up with the latest trends, and is still as popular as ever. Today, a Barbie doll is purchased every three seconds somewhere in the 150 countries where they are sold. On July 15, from 2pm to 4pm, the public is invited to enjoy tea and treats with Barbie and her friends, at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. The event sells out every year. “It’s a wonderful way to spend quality time with your favorite girl, especially if she is a fan of Barbie,” said Executive Director Leslie Schroeder. “It makes for a delightful afternoon of fun and friendship amidst the charm of Old Davie School.” The theme for this year’s tea is “Safari.” The tables will be set with fine linens, china and Barbie centerpieces, as guests enjoy tea, and sweet delights. There will be a Barbie fashion show, opportunities for photos, coloring, raffle prizes and more. Live Barbie dolls will model the latest Barbie fashions, pose for photos and sign autographs. Young girls are encouraged to come dressed in their finest dresses, shoes and tiaras. They can even bring their Barbie dolls along to participate in the festivities. Tickets are $20 for general admission for ages three years and up. Children under three are free as a lap child. The cost for members is $15. Save $5 per ticket by becoming a member today. Barbie has had more than 80 careers and repre-
sented more than 45 different nationalities. She has been outfitted by more than 70 famous couturiers and had over 40 pets, including cats and dogs, horses, a panda, a lion cub, and a zebra. She has owned a wide range of vehicles, including pink Corvette convertibles, trailers, and jeeps. In 1974, a section of Times Square in New York City was renamed Barbie Boulevard for a week. In 1985, the artist Andy Warhol created a painting of Barbie. The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Rd., east of University Drive in Davie. Davie Offers Temporary Hurricane Horse Release Program BY DEBBY TEICH
D
avie’s rural character and equestrian lifestyle has attracted thousands of residents who own horses. The Town of Davie wants to make sure that these horses have the best chance of surviving if a major storm threatens the area. Every year, the Town opens a 100acre fenced pasture at Robbins Park on Hiatus to serve as a holding area when a hurricane warning has been issued. The Town encourages residents to plan in advance, since waiting until the storm watch is posted may be too late. No registration will be available at site or after a storm watch is issued. Broward County has its own “Large Animal Disaster Plan,” which identifies all post hurricane needs for horses. The Broward County plan addresses the vital issues in case of injury of horses, as well as facilities to hold them after the storm in case a horse is injured or cannot be immediately claimed by the owner. For information, visit www.broward.org/disaster or call 954-831-3900. On a local level, the Town of Davie has concentrated its efforts in directing

the development of a temporary neighborhood center to serve as a holding area before and during a hurricane. Pre-registration applications for the Temporary Hurricane Horse Release Program are available online at www.davie-fl.gov. The fee is $40 (from June 1 to November 30) per horse. The number of horses accepted is limited. The turn-out site is for Davie residents or for horses that are boarded in Davie only. Once a hurricane warning has been issued, the site will open for pre-registered horses only. A storm warning means a hurricane is expected to strike the area within 24 hours. This site will reopen to allow owners to retrieve their horses when the winds have subsided to a minimum of 40 mph or it is deemed safe by emergency personnel. The Town encourages residents to visit the site before they pre-register to determine if it is safer than their current situation, and to call with questions now as opposed to when the storm warning is issued. Nathan Horn of Davie owns a horse and plans to sign up for the program. He recently moved from Connecticut and is concerned about a possible hurricane. ‘I am glad that the Town of Davie offers a plan for horses,” said Horn. “I don’t know what I would do if something happened to my horse in a storm.” For information on the Davie program, call 954-797-1181 or visit www.davie-fl.gov, click on Hurricane Info and locate Davie Horse Release Program. ooper City residents recently celebrated their Moms and the many things that make them special. Moms and daughters, ages pre-k and up, gathered for the annual Mother-Daughter Tea at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2001, this hometown event has been a way for them to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy a special afternoon together. Many of them return year after year. Approximately 120 residents attended the event. Dressed in party attire, they sampled a variety of teas, coffee, lemonade, finger sandwiches, and desserts. The teacups, saucers, sugar bowls, and creamers are all pieces from authentic tea
sets that are borrowed from residents and participants. Since this year’s theme was Derby Day, many brought a Derby hat to enter a contest. Lisa Mallozi won for most original. During the Tea, daughters completed a variety of craft projects for their mothers. Mothers and daughters also received a keepsake photo of the event. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. Dads recently had their turn earlier in the year with the Father and Son Adventure Night. Other events include Mom-Son Night of Fun (September), Grandparent’s Day (September) and Daddy Daughter Dance (November). The goal of the Cooper City Recreation Department is to promote community involvement by residents of all ages. The Department is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to reach the residents of Cooper City. “Our events provide an outlet for our residents to bond with their family and spend quality time together in an entertaining atmosphere free of today’s technology distractions,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. Town of Davie Honors Veterans on Memorial Day COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
F
or more than 40 years, Davie families have been gathering for the Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony to pay their respects to the men and women who died while serving in the military. The Town of Davie, the Scoutmasters Camporee Committee of the South Florida Council, and the Boy Scouts of America presented the event once again. It was a great way to spend time with the family and pay homage to our veterans. During the parade, the streets were lined with patriotic residents from Davie and across Broward County waving their American flags and dressed in red, white and blue. Participants included scouts, schools, local organizations and businesses, Davie Police and Fire Rescue, military organizations, local politicians, and many others. Following the parade, there was a Memorial Service at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Soldiers who fought in each of the different wars were recognized during the moving ceremony that included a 21 Gun Salute. During the service, the public had an opportunity to place flags on markers representing those military personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

ooper City residents of all ages are invited to Eat to the Beat. There will be live music, as well as food trucks – creating the perfect environment for a fun family evening in Cooper City. Just bring chairs, blankets and your appetite! Over 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, which will be held on July 14, from 5:30pm - 9:30pm, at Cooper City Sports Complex (Stirling Road and Palm Avenue). “We wanted to offer a fun opportunity for families and their neighbors in the community to gather this summer,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “It’s a great family event. We have a large

variety of food trucks, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.” The City of Cooper City launched the event last year, but it was called Food Trucks Rolling into Cooper City. Since there are now live bands, organizers decided to change the name. The event is offered twice a year. The last one was held in January. There will be a Beach Boys Tribute Band, bounce houses, face painting, obstacle courses, beer and wine. Some of the food trucks include: Tikiz Shaved Ice & Ice Cream, Gene’s Joint, Miami Pizza Truck, Food Dude, Taco Fresh, Virgo Bomb Gourmet Food
Truck, Mita’s Dishes, Che Grill, Ipeks Wykked, Red Zepplin, Tio’z Urban Dominican food, Cucina Bambina, Sugar Yummy Mama and more. Yvonne Davies attended last year’s event with her family. “We had such a great time last year,” said Davies. “We are excited to attend again. We love the food truck idea, since we all like different foods. The Beach Boys are one of my favorite bands!” For information, call the Cooper City Recreation Department at 954-434-4300, #233.

35th Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo Offers Quality Family Time COMMUNITY NEWS

avie children recently traded their electronics for fishing rods, as they spent some quality time with their parents, grandparents and friends at the 35th Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo at the Davie Golf and Country Club. “This is a wonderful event for both children and their parents,” said Town of Davie Mayor Judy Paul. “The golf course had plenty of hungry fish just waiting to be caught!” The kids were divided into three age groups: 5 and under, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. When they caught a fish, they brought it to the judges table, where a volunteer helped to identify, measure, and unhook the fish before releasing it back into the water. Prizes were awarded in all age groups for the length of the fish (not for its weight). Some of the prizes included fishing rods Town of Davie and reels, tackle boxes and trophies. The categories included: most fish caught over three inches, longest bass caught, longest fish caught (not a bass), most unusual catch and sportsmanship.

Town of Davie Residents Join in the July 4th Celebration COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
F
or 42 years, Helen Hunt has gathered with her family and Davie residents to celebrate our nation’s birthday, as well as her own. As she he turns 90 this year, she will be surrounded by many of her family members, including 31 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. All of them plan to attend the Town of Davie’s festivities and fireworks. “I look forward to another year of celebrating our nations freedom with my family members, as well as Davie residents,” said Hunt. “I am grateful to the Town of Davie for organizing such a special event every year.” The festivities begin with Fun at the Pool, from 10am-4pm, at the Pine Island Pool. Activities include a free swim and inner tube water polo, as well as the Fun Foam Spray with the Davie Fire Department (11am), Dive-in Treasure Hunt (1pm) and Watermelon Eating Contest (3pm). From 4pm-9:30pm, the festivities continue at Bamford Sports Complex. Throughout the event, there will be kids’ arts and crafts, food trucks, face painting, bounce houses, train rides, craft vendors and more. There will also be kids inter-
active games (4:30pm), cake cutting with free cake while supplies last (6:30pm), live music (7pm) and fireworks (9pm). Although the Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. According to the American Red Cross, the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals, such as this one. If someone is setting fireworks off at home, the American Red Cross recommends that they follow these safety steps: ▸▸ Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging. ▸▸ Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution. ▸▸ Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection. ▸▸ Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.” ▸▸ Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets. ▸▸ Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials. ▸▸ Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks. No alcoholic beverages, guns, or fireworks, including sparklers, are permitted at any time during the event or inside the park. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

f you are constantly tired, irritable, sleepy and barely getting by on multiple cups of caffeine a day, know that this is not the way life is supposed to be. In today’s hectic world, it seems normal to put sleep and rest time in the backburner while we are busy with “life.” But, guess what? “Life” cannot happen successfully if your body is unable to perform basic functions. If your lifestyle is plagued with stress and sleep deprivation, the time will come when you will feel it catching up with you. You might be there right now and not even know it! More and more Americans have reported feeling tired, even after enough sleep. What’s more alarming is that in spite of experiencing extreme fatigue day in and day out, some people can’t fall asleep or stay asleep for an adequate amount of time. If you’ve been experiencing these symptoms, you could be suffering from adrenal fatigue, a condition that can adversely affect your quality of life and cause other health issues. Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue include: ▸▸ Fatigue ▸▸ Fogginess ▸▸ Stress ▸▸ Salt Cravings

▸▸ Allergies ▸▸ Infections ▸▸ Low libido ▸▸ Circulatory issues ▸▸ Weight gain The adrenals are two small glands located right above the kidneys and are responsible for producing important hormones, such as cortisol, popularly known as the stress hormone. Long-term stress on the body can cause the adrenals to stop working properly. Because of the range and vagueness of symptoms, adrenal fatigue is rarely diagnosed by conventional medicine. Unlike traditional doctors, who have failed to recognize adrenal fatigue as a “real” medical condition, functional medicine doctors understand the importance of treating symptoms before an illness develops—addressing the root and cause of a problem is critical in keeping a healthy body. If you feel tired, are inexplicably gaining weight and suffering from lack of concentration, there is certainly a reason. At Bellissimo, we can help you find it. Treatment for adrenal fatigue depends on the individual and the severity of the condition. The first step is to test for it through saliva samples collected at four different times throughout the day. There are many supplements on the market to treat for adrenal fatigue that can do more harm than good if you don’t know where all four points of cortisol are at. The cortisol levels may be high and needing to be lowered, or they may be low and need to be picked up. Timing of when these dips occur can also impact treatment. The tricky part is that symptoms may be the same when high or low. Testing also needs to analyze DHEA (another important hormone) levels. Working with a qualified practitioner is the only way to ensure your diagnosis is accurate and your treatment effective. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Davie PAL Sponsors Triathlon for Kids at Bamford Park
SPORTS NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
A
rea youth have been practicing their biking, running and swimming skills for the Davie Police Athletic League (PAL) Triathlon for kids, ages 5-17. It will be held on July 9, at 8am, at Bamford Park in Davie for both beginners and experienced athletes. This is the 4th year that Davie PAL will be putting on this race and the 10th race overall. “We are excited for this year’s races and to see how well all of these kids have progressed over the last year,” said Officer Tim Albury, Director of Davie PAL. “It is great to see kids who started our races four years ago on training wheels, and now they are on road bikes averaging 15-17 miles per hour; or could barely swim across the pool one time and are now swimming 200 meters; or the kids who were exhausted their first year and had to walk on the run course and are now running with some amazing times. We continue to grow and make changes to our event as we are always striving to become the premiere race in the state.” Packet pick-up is from 10:30am-2pm at Alex’s Bicycle Shop, 11466 W. State Road 84 in Davie. Registration will not be available on race day. On July 8 at Bamford Park, there will be a walk-through of the course at 2pm. Since the transition area and finish line are changing, participants are encouraged to walk the course or view it online. On race day, the transition opens at 6:45am and closes at 7:30am. The National Anthem is at 7:50am and the race begins at 8am. Bike helmets are required. Race belts are suggested. Training wheels are allowed. Goggles and swim caps are
recommended for the pool. Following the race, there will be food, as well as a ceremony with awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each age group, both male and female, as well as finisher medals for all participants. The races will be broken down into four age brackets. Organizers “age up” (per triathlon sporting standards), so children will race according to the age they are as of December 31, 2016. The categories are as follows: ▸▸ 5-7 year olds - Swim (25 yds.), Bike (.5 miles), Run (.5 miles) ▸▸ 8-10 year olds - Swim (100 yds.), Bike (3.1 miles), Run (1K) ▸▸ 11-15 year olds - Swim (200 yds.), Bike (6.2 miles), Run (2K) ▸▸ 16-17 year olds - Swim (250 yds.), Bike (6.2 miles), Run (2K) Proceeds from the triathlon will benefit the programs at Davie PAL, a youth crime prevention program that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth in the community. Broward College Students Participate in Mass Casualty Simulation COMMUNITY NEWS

tudents, faculty and staff joined local anesthesia, emergency medicine and general surgery residencies for a mass casualty simulation on Broward College’s A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie. They worked with medical, fire rescue and health professionals on the scenario, dubbed “Sun Shade Down,” from start to finish. This was the first time that the campus hosted something like this and of this magnitude. It was also the first time the Health Sciences Simulation Center has been converted into a level one trauma facility. “All Fire agencies in the area train every year on MCI (Mass Casualty Incidents), typically around spring time,” said Robert DiFerdinando, Battalion Chief for Davie Fire Rescue, who served as senior controller and fire rescue radio dispatcher for the exercise. “This drill fit in well with all the agencies that attended to supplement their own review and training. Hands-on training like this does not happen often and when it does, it is the BEST thing for the fire agency personnel. Books and policies are nice, but true hands-on work is what the personnel remember when it’s time to ‘go to work’ on this type of an incident.” The exercise began with what was believed to be a propane explosion outside one of the Institute of Public Safety buildings, which was to have structurally collapsed, creating an electrical fire. More than 40 “victims” made up of volun-

teers and high-fidelity mannequins were treated on site or transported to the Health Sciences Simulation Center “Sunny Side Hospital.” Injuries included everything from a severely disfigured leg needing amputation to chest pains and CO poisoning. To further create a real-life and immersive environment, a professional FX team applied moulage (makeup and prosthesis) to the patients. “This was a training exercise for prehospital providers in the event of a real world emergency, such as what we experienced at Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport,” said Kathleen King, District Director, Health Sciences Simulation Center at Broward College. “At the same time, our students were given the valuable learning opportunity of working alongside medical and emergency personnel. It was an eyeopening and unforgettable experience for many involved. One of the exciting things from the day was seeing our paramedic students work side-byside with fire rescue. They did a wonderful job.” Data gathered from the exercise will be compared to current action and response plans in place to determine best practices and areas for improvement. “We learned how important communication for these types of scenarios,” said King. “It takes good teamwork to make sure people are being cared for in the best way possible.”

All of the artwork was original and included a wide variety of images from the Everglades. A distinguished group of local community leaders and art lovers judged the artwork. Powell described the students who won. “Veronica is a very creative and dedicated artist. She was very motivated and quickly began to fill her paper with a close up drawing of a mangrove tree, blending color and adding textural details. Drawing is one of her favorite things. Isabella is also a very creative artist. She spent many hours on her piece and even stayed after school to assemble all the raised areas of her dimensional watercolor artwork.” 4th & 5th grade participants from St Mark (not all pictured)

ike the answer to most questions medical, the answer is not so straightforward. There are many factors which go into the decision making process. These factors include maturity/anxiety of the child, type of sedation available and financial resources available to the family. In our experience, the consideration of each of these variables is of upmost importance in consistently making the right decision for the pediatric dental patient. The first step in the process is to gather all of the available information. This is accomplished by performing a complete assessment of the patient. The information gathered includes the obvious dental needs, diet, home care, age, emotional maturity, and dental anxiety. Most decisions regarding the treatment plan can be made at this stage. For example, a two year old who suffers from carious lesions (cavities) on all primary (baby) teeth would likely require a more comprehensive sedation in order to complete the entire dental treatment in a non-traumatic manner. A child at this age does not have the cognitive and emotional ability to complete the treatment without potential long-term negative effects. In other words, without the right approach, this child may become an adult with a longterm phobia of dentistry. On the other hand, a 16 year old who has been consistent with regular checkups and has already had dental treatment in the past would unlikely require sedation. Most other scenarios fall somewhere in between. Once the needs are established, the type of sedation would be considered. Types of sedation range from simple anxiolysis with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) administered in the dental office setting to general anesthesia done in a hospital setting. This is where the experience and intuition of the pediatric dentist is of most importance. Ideally, we would like to use the medication facilitating the completion of the treatment with the least sedative effect. Next month’s editorial will review the various types of dental sedations in more detail. It is at this point, that the parent/guardian must be informed and educated as to the process. For example, inhalation agents like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) completely exit the body prior to the end of a procedure. Other medications, depending on their route of administration, exit the body more slowly and prior arrangements should be made for an adult to sit with the child on the drive back home from the dental visit. Lastly, financials should be considered when making final decisions. Insurance breakdowns provided by the major insurance carriers are usually very specific as to what will be covered in most situations. However, if there is any ambiguity, an estimation of benefits (“EOB”) may be requested from the insurance company prior to the start of treatment. Finances may also direct treatment. For example, in a situation where there is a lot of dental work to be completed, doing so under a “deeper sedation” may seem more expensive because of the higher cost of administration. However, if there is a large amount of dental work needed, doing so under a “lighter” form of sedation may result in the need for multiple visits, possibly costing more in both time and money. Our advice is to focus on prevention. The sooner healthy habits are established, the less likely extensive treatment will be needed. Additionally, early exposure to the dental office (when dental work is not yet needed) decreases anxiety levels once dental treatment is necessary. There are also many benefits to the development of a relationship. The child is more comfortable and is more easily read by the doctor. Difficult conversations between parent and doctor are easily handled once there is trust. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Attorney’s Fees & What to Expect BY EVAN BARON
I
f any of you have been involved in litigation, no matter the area of the law; you already know that it can be extremely costly. Unfortunately, that is just the reality of litigation. In most instances, the longer it takes to reach a final resolution, the more costly it will be. As they say, “time is money.” Now imagine that you also must pay the fees and costs for your opposition. You could be responsible for double the fees. You may ask, “How is this possible?” In most areas of the law, it is not possible. In family law, however, it is a very real possibility. Florida Statutes states: “The Court may from time to time, after considering the financial Resources of both parties, order a party to pay a reasonable amount for attorney’s fees, suit money, and the cost to the other party of maintaining or defending any proceeding under this chapter, including enforcement and modification proceedings and appeals”. This statute was created to insure that both parties could be represented by counsel, even if one of the parties does not have the financial ability to retain counsel on their own. The primary purpose was to protect “stay at home” wives who were not working outside of the home and may not have had the ability to retain an attorney to represent them in their divorce. This would “level the playing field” and allow representation for both parties. The determination of whether fees could be awarded is based upon the concept of need and ability. The receiving spouse must illustrate a need for these fees and the court must find an ability to pay by the spouse who is being asked to pay. Of course, the court cannot prevent the “paying spouse” form having funds to continue with his/her representation. Although I previously indicated that this law was originally passed to protect “stay at home” wives, things have changed in the work force. The law is gender neutral and as such a wife could be ordered to contribute to her Husband’s fees if in fact she is the one with the ability and he is the one with the need. I can tell you from experience that the payment of attorney’s fees is an area which causes the most obstacles to a settlement. In some instances, a Marital Settlement Agreement can have a “prevailing party” clause. This states that if there is a “post judgment” (divorce already finalized) issue which must be litigated (contempt or modification), the prevailing party is entitled to payment of fees by the other party. This is strictly based upon an agreement of the parties and need and ability is not the issue. If a motion is filed to enforce terms of an agreement, the party who is successful will be entitled to reasonable fees. One issue which is considered in either case is whether the requested fees are reasonable. No matter what the scenario, fees must be considered reasonable by the requesting party. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

REAL ESTATE
BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR
M
any of my clients are calling me, because of the confusing information that is being dispelled from the media about our housing market. My colleagues and I are getting concerned about the homeowners who have planted themselves for more than eleven years in their current home instead of moving forward to their next residence. The Real Estate market is moving, and here are some of the reasons why. According to the Daily Real Estate News, more homes are predicted to be sold this year that have been sold in the past ten years. Home sales are expected to increase about 3.5 percent to 5.64 million. By 2018, existing-home sales will likely rise another 2.8 percent to 5.8 million (according to the National Association of REALTORS®).
What are the reasons for this rise? ▸▸ 16 million new jobs were created since 2010 ▸▸ Pent-up household formation and ▸▸ An increase in consumer confidence.
How can we accommodate this new demand?
New-home sales are expected to rise 10.7 percent this year to 620,000 and are expected to tick up another 8 percent in 2018 to 670,000 sales. However, buyers are likely to face higher prices on homes. Prices are expected to increase 5 percent in 2017 and another 3.5 percent in 2018.
Where is our inventory?
Homes sold quickly in the first quarter of 2017 - causing prices to rise even higher than predicted in many parts of the nation. “Prices are increasing faster than we expected them to because of the continual shortage of new homes coming onto the market,” said Senior Economist Joseph Kirchner of Realtor.com. “Prices are increasing faster than we expected them to because of the continual shortage of new homes coming onto the market. People who had been holding back on buying a home ... now have good, steady jobs and are less worried about losing their jobs and hence are going into the housing market.” “Prospective buyers poured into the market,” said NAR’s Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. “Those able to successfully buy most likely had to outbid others—especially for those in the starter-home market.” The biggest challenge to today’s housing market is the shortage of housing inventory for sale. A normal market would see a six-month supply of homes for sale. Currently, that number is below four months. This is the major reason home prices have continued to appreciate at higher levels than historic averages. There is only 2.4 months of single-family inventory in Cooper City which is a decrease of 11% from last month. There is only 4.7 months of single-family inventory in Davie, which is an increase of 20% from last month. According to NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz, the reason for the increase in confidence amongst builders is as follows: “The HMI (Housing Market Index) measure of future sales conditions reached its highest level since June 2005, a sign of growing consumer confidence in the new home market. Especially as existing home inventory remains tight, we can expect increased demand for new construction moving forward.” The Wall Street Journal stated that home builders are beginning to shift their focus away from luxury homes and toward homes at lower price points to cater to this growing millennial population. You may want to consider a valuation of your current home. If you are a renter sitting on the fence, it may be time for you to consider buying NOW. Zona Horton has been successfully selling Real Estate in South Florida for over 30 years. in Broward alone. The dramatic uptick is largely the product of cheaply-made synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl and carfentanil, which are used as replacements for heroin. For instance, fentanyl is many times more potent than heroin, while carfentanil is up to 1,000 times more potent than heroin, and a very small dose can sedate a 13,000 pound elephant (while the same miniscule dose can easily kill a person). In more than 30 years of working in law enforcement, I have personally witnessed the horrific damage drugs can inflict on individuals, families and communities. The drugs may change over the years, but the overall narcotics problem remains. While this public health emergency is historic and its impact far reaching, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is doing all we can to make a difference and end this deadly drug plague. BSO is a member of the Community Action Team, comprised of law enforcement, treatment providers, epidemiologists, first responders, physicians, the Broward Medical Association, Broward Health, Memorial Health, United Way and many others. The team has developed a threepronged attack at ending this epidemic via a combination of enforcement, education and intervention. While BSO drug detectives and deputies are working at a feverish pace to enforce drug laws and arresting those responsible for selling these dangerous drugs, we are also educating the public through town hall meetings and community forums. Education campaigns also continue in middle and high schools, PTAs and community organizations. In addition, BSO has acquired funding to outfit hundreds of additional deputies, along with first responders from fire rescue, with the anti-narcotic overdose drug Narcan. That move will no doubt save lives. This war on opioids is not our first fight to end a drug epidemic gripping Broward. We’ve been here before and we’ve had much success. When the highly-dangerous, imported, designer drug Flakka suddenly appeared on the scene a few years ago and became an out-of-control local plague, we met it head on. Within months, we effectively stamped out the deadly drug from Broward’s streets. I am hopeful we will have similar success in the battle against opioids. If you know someone struggling with these dangerous drugs, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Call 2-1-1. The opioid crisis is very real and very deadly. But, together, BSO and our community partners are committed to ending this alarming epidemic and saving lives. For information, visit www.sheriff.org.

terrifying opioid epidemic is sweeping the nation - infecting our neighborhoods, poisoning our families and filling our morgues. Nationwide, nearly 33,000 people lost their lives to opioids in 2016 - more than died in auto accidents or homicides. Sadly, Broward is not immune from the devastating crisis, which knows no bounds and impacts individuals across nearly all demographic and socioeconomic categories. The numbers are alarming. In 2016, opioids claimed 582 lives in Broward—nearly two each day. And the death toll from this deadly menace is rising all the time. By the end of the year, deaths attributed to this threat will likely exceed 1,000

he Town is always struggling to bring improvements that are needed on many roadways connecting Stirling and Griffin Roads. Ongoing complaints about speeding and dangerous road conditions have led to several proposed actions. Although the entire roads need to be rebuilt, the issue of funding ties our hands. This was one of the infrastructure projects that would have been funded had the residents approved the half cent sales tax. For every action, there is a reaction. We will be seeking grants and federal or state assistance to bring this to fruition. One of the major impediments on these particular roads is the lack of right of way which, if available, would allow for road widening or needed sidewalks. We are excited to announce that the Town’s new website went live on May 11. This site utilizes the latest technology to ensure that we deliver information to our residents in a timely and concise manner. Please take the opportunity to visit the site and familiarize yourself with it. If you have any questions or feedback or are having trouble navigating, please do not hesitate to contact lhenry@davie-fl.gov, 954-797-1035 or Ker’Shyra Myrick at kmyrick@davie-fl.gov or 954-797-1102 I had the pleasure of attending a conference in Washington DC on May 13-15 presented by The International Peace Council USA. It was indeed an honor to be presented with the Grand Achievers award recognizing my work over the years as a local voice for diversity and peace, exemplified by the inclusion of the Gandhi statue and creation of Gandhi Square as a place to gather for peace and inclusion. In the words of the great Mahatma Gandhi and as pursued by his ardent student, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, “The day the power of love overrules the love of power, the world will know peace.” I had the honor of presenting the Mayor’s Scholarship to two outstanding young women during the May Senior awards assemblies. Isabela Mata, from Western High School, will be attending George Mason University this fall. She has distinguished herself as a Junior staff and Peace Ambassador for the National Voice for Equality, Education and Enlightenment, which represents organizations at bullying and suicide prevention workshops and was a staff member at the Peace Ambassadors Leadership Summit. “Izzy” served three years as President of the Gay-Straight Alliance and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is well loved by her classmates as was shown by the rousing applause she received when I called out her name. Rina Lakhlani, an honors student at Nova High School, has distinguished herself as a National AP Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society and was a nominee for the Silver Knight General Scholarship. Her list of organizations and honors are too numerous to list, but the two things that struck me about Rina was that she participated for two years in the Town of Davie Public Affairs Academy and her compassion for human kind and protection of animals. As a member of Key Club, she assisted with the Horses and Handicapped program, collected for UNICEF to purchase necessities for children in third world countries and sought donations for the Salvation Army. Rina was the founder of ROAR (Reaching Out for Animal Rights) and was an Elephant Sanctuary Ambassador presenting to elementary schools and the Museum of Discovery and Science about the importance of elephant safety and reducing ivory poaching to protect future populations. All in all, I think the future looks bright with these young adults ready to take the helm. The Town Council and staff will be following a summer schedule, meeting once in June (the 7th) and once in July (the 26th). Although, taking a little vacation, I will be available by phone or email. To reach Mayor Paul, call 954-797-1030 or send an email to jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

What is Wellness Before Medicine? BY DR. CASTILLO-PLAZA
W
ho would like to live to be 100 years old? Who would like to live to be 100, but have to endure pain for the last 30 years of their life or have Alzheimer’s for the last 20? That’s exactly what “wellness before medicine “is all about. Life should not be that complicated. In fact, it’s all about oxygen, water and food. Luckily for most of us in the United States, we have plenty of all three. Unfortunately, these three elements are not as pure as they just to be. What we do with any of these three elements (especially food) during the years of our life will result in health or illness. When all three of these elements are properly selected and utilized, the innate healing mechanism of our body can properly work. On the contrary, improper use of any or all three elements will alter the regenerative processes so that the body can no longer keep itself healthy. Air pollution, toxins, contaminated waters, animal food manipulated with the use of synthetic hormones and antibiotics, and plant food altered with chemicals and pesticides are just a few ways to start damaging our health.

SECTIONAND HEALTH HEAD WELLNESS
South Florida
As a norm, years of wellbeing precede any disease. During those years, an inflammatory process builds up in the body and starts manifesting itself with the earliest symptoms of what I call “Malaise Lifestyle.” These early changes can be felt as body aches and pains, fatigue, tiredness, memory loss, anxiety, depression, low libido, weight gain, pre-diabetes, stress, and food intolerance. Lifestyle malaise can affect all aspects of a person’s health including: physical, mental, emotional, environmental, and social. If this initial alteration of our body’s innate healing mechanism is left untreated because the symptoms don’t fit the parameters of any specific disease, we totally miss the unique opportunity to prevent a majority of illnesses that can become “incurable” once we are in the late adulthood. Diseases like Alzheimer’s, osteoarthritis, diabetes, obesity, heart attacks, breast cancer and most autoimmune medical conditions are all preventable if we were to treat all the common initial symptoms of this “lifestyle malaise” that hammers our bodies during our adulthood and before the disease takes its course.
Precise Wellness Medicine
WellnessPlus was founded on the following principle: “Your health today is a result of the experiences, exposures, and lifestyle habits that you have acquired during your life.” Your health requires commitment and can be positively influenced and rejuvenated by taking the necessary steps to embrace lifestyle changes and create a health style that meets the needs of you and your family. We do believe and understand that there are numerous influences that affect your health including: genetics, diet/food intolerances, medication/drug history, environment/detoxification, stress/chronic and acute, potential disease history, exercise, and essential nutrient status. These influences and others all take part in shaping your metabolism and how you feel today. Only you have the power to change the destiny of your health, vitality and how gracefully you will age. Whether you are looking to revitalize your health and sex life, gain memory and energy, lose weight and gain muscle, reduce risk factors (elevated lipids, glucose or chronic inflammatory processes) or prevent most of the common illnesses that usually show up later in life, WellnessPlus can create an individualized approach that addresses the unique biochemical challenges that are keeping you from improving your health. Even if you are already challenged by a particular condition or disease or you may not be able to tolerate drug therapy for a given condition, WellnessPlus can help you. Our next article and workshop topic will be on Metabolic Health. Different wellness topics will be presented live twice a month at our Wellness Center in Pembroke Pines. Visit www.wellnessplusmed.com for upcoming event dates or call 954-437-3756 to request a courtesy invitation and reservation. Hors d’oeuvres will be served.
