Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 7/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Bianca – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Annie or Bianca for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at: WindmillHealth@att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

There’s Much to Celebrate on July 4th

W

e celebrate the United States’ independence from England each year on July 4th. In 1776, the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, declaring the 13 colonies were no longer subject to British rule. While U.S. independence is clearly the most significant historical event on July 4th, interestingly, several other important events have taken place on this particular day. On July 4th, 1827, the State of New York abolished slavery. At one time, New York had the second largest slave population among the colonies. This legal act eventually led to the abolishment of slavery throughout the country and, in part, the Civil War. On July 4th, 1997, NASA’s Pathfinder landed on the surface of Mars. The landing and subsequent scientific mission were watched by people around the world, including by a young South African named Elon Musk and a Seattle book seller named Jeff Bezos. Those two would eventually go on to found SpaceX and Blue Origin, the world’s first privately funded space exploration companies, among other notable businesses. On July 4th, 1939, New York Yankees’ first baseman Lou Gehrig shocked the world by announcing his retirement from baseball and the fact that he was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Despite his horrible diagnosis, he captured the hearts of America by claiming that he was the “luckiest man on the face of the earth.” On July 4th, 1918, the Bolsheviks killed Russia’s Tsar and his family. In 1845, Henry David Thoreau moved into a log cabin at Walden pond. In 1803, Thomas Jefferson announced the signing of the Louisiana Purchase, the first step on America’s path to becoming a global Super-Power. And in 1976, Israeli commandos executed the most daring raid in military history, rescuing over 100 hostages in Entebbe, Uganda. Coincidentally, the United States is not the only nation to celebrate its independence on July 4th;so does the Philippines. This year, as you enjoy a traditional 4th of July barbecue followed by a patriotic fireworks show, think of all the other historical events that this day marks.

our Davie students were selected as winners of the 2019 “Drop Savers” Water Conservation Poster Contest. Each year, in conjunction with National Drinking Water Week, the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association sponsors the statewide contest, which encourages students in kindergarten through 12th grade to design an original poster promoting water conservation. The Town of Davie had four winners, including two first place winners. Valeria Miranda, a

kindergarten student at Davie Elementary, won First Place for Division 1 (Kindergarten and 1st grade). Five Tips for Healthy, Injury-Free Running

By John Fernandez

One clinical study after another has confirmed that regular aerobic activity — which can range from brisk walking to jogging to running outside or on a treadmill — can add years to your life and prevent or reduce heart disease risk factors such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. And regular exercise can help prevent many cancers, as well. “sweat rate,” which is based on the amount of liquid your body loses after an hour of exercise. By calculating your sweat rate, you can better evaluate what you should drink to replace lost fluid and help avoid injuries. 3. Listen to Your Body Most running injuries, commonly involving knees, the feet, the Achilles heel or the hamstring, don’t appear suddenly. They usually provide slowdeveloping warning signs that should not be ignored. It’s up to each runner to heed the signs and see a doctor before serious injury develops. As part of a major study of lifelong exercisers last year — which included runners and brisk-walkers — researchers found that those in their mid-70s who have been active for most of their lives have similar cardiovascular health to 40-45-year-olds.

can be especially tough on joints, muscles and overall health from repetitive impact. Always consult your physician before starting a running program, particularly if you have underlying health issues such as high blood pressure.

“The biggest takeaway of these reports is that physical inactivity is the greatest threat to our health,” said Michael Swartzon, M.D., primary care sports medicine physician with Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. “It’s not surprising that these studies prove that physical activity helps reduce risk factors for musculoskeletal conditions, cardiovascular disease and potentially fatal diseases.”

Here are five tips for healthy, injury-free running:

All sports activities require proper stretching exercises and warmups, along with proper hydration throughout the course. But running

1. Avoid Doing Too Much, Too Soon They are referred to as the “terrible too’s” — doing too much, too soon and too fast. The body requires time, rest and proper nutrition for sustaining a regular running program. 2. Get Proper Hydration South Florida is notorious for its heat and humidity and runners need to take extra care to stay properly hydrated. Learn how to measure your

4. Get the Right Running Shoes Don’t underestimate the importance of the proper running shoes, especially for long-distance runners. An estimated 15 percent to 20 percent of running injuries involve the feet. Plantar fasciitis, small tears or inflammation of the tendons and ligaments from heel to toes, is usually the number-one foot complaint among runners. Get properly fitted running shoes for your needs. 5. Monitor Progress/Set Goals Detailed workout logs and periodic goals can keep you from those overuse injuries. Keeping a journal of how you did and how you felt during each run can help you determine if a trip to the doctor is necessary. Monitoring progress and setting realistic goals are important tools for both avoiding common injuries and keeping motivated.

Southwest Ranches Residents Celebrate Special Family Reunion BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Peterson family was devastated when their new puppy, Cedar, disappeared from their yard two years ago. They believed the fourmonth-old German Shepherd was stolen, because the family’s other dogs were still there, but the gate had been left open. Distraught over the disappearance, the Petersons posted flyers around the community and in area Publix stores, notified local veterinarian offices, and offered a reward for Cedar’s return. They even hired a pet detective and paid for a pet alert to go out across the southeastern part of the United States. The Petersons also alerted the microchip company. “We never gave up hope,” states Tamara Peterson. “My son knew she had been microchipped and prayed and had faith that she would come in one day.” In April, the family got the call they had long awaited – Cedar had been found. A County Marshal in Hugo, Colorado, almost 2,000 miles away, had found her in a snow-covered ditch. “When I got the initial call saying they thought they had located Cedar in northeastern Colorado, I was shocked,” shares Peterson. “It brought tears to my eyes. It was unbelievable.”

The officer took Cedar to a local veterinary hospital where she was scanned for a microchip, which was traced back to Balasky Animal Hospital in Davie. Cedar was injured and malnourished but was nursed back to health before being reunited with the Petersons. Wings of Rescue, Cloud Nine Rescue Flights and the Humane Society of Broward County arranged to have Cedar flown home, where she was reunited with her family on the tarmac at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. The family then brought her home to reunite with their other dogs. According to Peterson, “She 100% remembered our rescue dog, Amy. Cedar cried and wagged her tail like she saw her mother. She was just accepted right back into my pack like she never left.” Appreciative and forever grateful for the efforts of the Humane Society and Wings of Rescue to reunite the family, Peterson is now urging all dog-owners to have their pet microchipped. “The microchip absolutely is 100% responsible for this reunion,” states Peterson. “If people would microchip, and make sure that it’s registered to the

current address, many lost animals would make it home safe.” Cherie Wachter, vice president of marketing for the Humane Society of Broward County, wholeheartedly agrees. “We can’t stress enough the importance of having pets microchipped. The Humane Society offers this service for $20, plus tax, Monday through Friday, from 9am to 4:30pm, no appointment necessary.” The Humane Society of Broward County is located at 2070 Griffin Road. CHAMBER NEWS

CEO Nikki Hanna Drives the DavieCooper City Chamber Forward

T

he Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce has been helping local businesses grow for more than 80 years. In the last two, they redefined what a chamber of commerce looks like and became the fastest growing chamber in Broward County. The revolutionary change was the brainchild of Chamber CEO Nikki Hanna, M.S.. We sat down with Nikki to learn more. How did the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce become the fastest growing chamber in Broward County? A chamber of commerce is a business just like any other business. The chamber needed to be redefined and have a new strategy to meet the needs of our business community. Nothing can stay the same forever. We have to evolve, shift and grow with the times and demands in our community. I wrote a strategic plan when I started. We have probably changed it a hundred times since. A key to success is staying flexible. The first thing I did was ensure the chamber had a board of directors that understood our mission and wanted to utilize their leadership skills, talents and connections to make change happen. Once that was in place, we put the plan into action.

I see the chamber as an epic revolution to really grow your business. We focus on creating value for our members through our bi-weekly leads groups, committee work, Women in Business initiatives, Government, Economic & Community Affairs committee, large monthly chamber luncheons, signature events, monthly after-hours events, being a part of community events in the Town of Davie and the City of Cooper City while making time to listen to what our members need. I’ve hired the best people in the industry. They understand the goals. We want to be the main source of economic help and growth in our community for small and large companies. How are you making The Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce relevant to younger people? We created an under 40 committee, #UPandComing, to help Generation X, Xennials and Millennials to learn to use face to face 28 JULY 2019 | OUR CITY DAVIE | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

business interaction rather than just using the internet, Facebook and social media to gain clients and resources. We have over 15 opportunities a month for members to meet people and build solid professional relationships. We have a student member program to help local college students start the process early of networking and possibly finding a future job by meeting decision makers of chamber member companies. It has been amazing to see how we are helping everyone succeed through the different opportunities we provide. Tell us about the West Broward Leadership certificate program. Why did you create it? Two years ago, it was clear to me that there was no professional certificate programs available in our market that gave business leaders the tools and knowledge they needed when the interact with the city or town. People simply had no idea what the town and city had to offer! I developed a program focused on giving our members real-world experience, including opportunities for entreprenuers to visit fortune 500 companies and tell their stories. This type of learning can not be done by textbook only. Our members got to see firsthand how leaders in different sized businesses all face similar challenges and find solutions to those problems. In March 2019 I facilitated our Inaugural West Broward Leadership Program after 2 years of developing the program from research and seeing what would help our leaders excogitate and enhance their current background. You are known as a “rainmaker” and one of the most influential women in the industry. What has been your driving force to lead change and make such a huge impact? Since I was a little girl, I had the gift of making friends. I wanted everyone to be friends and come together. Both of my parents were also influential people in their careers and in the community. They took my sister and I everywhere with them. My father and grandfather were a part of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce through our family business. I knew about chambers and the impact since the early 90’s. I stayed local for college and attended & graduated from Nova Southeastern University, where I earned a Master’s Degree in business and in leadership from Huizenga School of Business. This foundation was the starting point to where I am today. The people I grew up with are now holding positions in politics, CEOs of large companies and owners of privately-owned businesses. They are making a difference and I am proud to see them create jobs in the community, work on legislative issues and give back. The “rainmaker” trait comes naturally to me. I love putting people together and seeing people succeed. I have been mentored by incredible people

Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce CEO, Nikki Hanna M.S.

over my life. I connect with business owners because I know the start-up struggles, the monthly expenses that come with owning a business, managing people and how to reinvented yourself and your business as times change. When you join the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce you are getting a world of resources just with your initial conversation with me. I love to hear what our members do, their stories, how they overcame hard times and what they are doing in their business to meet their goals. I learn from them. It makes me a better CEO and leader. You will always hear me say we all have the power to influence. It is how you use that power you are given the right way to make a difference. Use your power to create, help and build a better tomorrow. Help others succeed and be happy to see people prospering because they are working hard to build their dream. What professional associations is the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce a member of? I am the 2019 Chair of the Broward County Council of Chambers. The Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce also belongs to the Fort Lauderdale Alliance, Broward League of Cities, Florida Restaurant Lodging Association, Public Relations Society of America, 2.1.1. Broward and the Davie Women’s Club. When I started, we were only a part of the Broward County Council of Chambers. We are very lucky to have a strong group of Chamber leaders that are working county-wide to help make a difference. These professional organizations strengthen our resources to help better serve our members. They each provide a different niche from education on the latest economic topics, to assistance to different industries, political topics that are having in our county, in our state and nationwide, the impacts the community faces with different companies coming into the area and help people personally who are struggling with work life balance. n To join the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce contact Nikki at CEO@davie-coopercity.org or call the office at 954-581-0790.

DINING OUT

Tower Deli & Caterers Towers Above the Rest BY BEVERLY PERKINS

F

or almost three decades, Tower Deli has been serving the community an extensive menu with quality food. But what they bring to the table is much more than great food, they bring their diners an excellent experience. Their consistent quality and standards have earned them their superb reputation in Davie as the “Number One Deli”. It’s no wonder that many of their customers have been with them for years as they were also voted “Number One Best Delicatessen and Bagel Shop” nine times by the Sun Sentinel.

A classic breakfast menu is served all day, while signature paninis, specialty sandwiches, custom salads and subs are some highlights trending on the lunch menu. From fresh baked bagels, smoked fish platters, traditional deli meats to homemade matzoh ball soup, knishes, and potato pancakes, the neighborhood eatery can satisfy all taste buds. Although, the full-service restaurant started as a small-scale deli, it has since grown in size and has become one of South Florida’s premier caterers. Owners Alan Goldstein and Ben Waisblat took some time to answer some questions about their awardwinning establishment. What distinguishes Tower Deli from other restaurants in the area? Our food is prepared with excellent quality ingredients and prepared fresh daily. We have an unconditional guarantee that all items are wholesome and great tasting. Should I have my child’s wisdom teeth extracted? This is a question I am asked frequently, especially at the end of orthodontic treatment. The question is very logical. We have been working to align the teeth for two years and everyone is excited to unveil their new smile to the world. The last thing that anyone wants is to leave the wisdom teeth to spoil our great work. On the other hand, the extraction of third molars is usually carried out by an Oral Surgeon using some form of sedation. The decision to refer must be thought out and based on science. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the decision to avoid extracting the third molars (AKA Wisdom Teeth) depends on their meeting the following criteria: completely erupted and nonimpacted, completely functional, painless, free of decay, disease-free, capable of being properly cleaned. As can be seen from this list, the academy of oral surgery leans heavily toward extraction. This list fails to aid in my decision making in most cases as the average teen completes orthodontic treatment between 13-14 yrs old and the wisdom teeth erupt between 17-21 years old. What I prefer to use as a guide is the anatomy of the mandible (lower jaw) and

the developmental stage of the third molars. For example, there is a nerve that runs the length of the lower border of the mandible called the inferior alveolar nerve. Among other things, this nerve provides for our feeling in the lower lip. The third molars develop right over this nerve and it is not until around 15-16 yrs old that the roots of the teeth tend to approximate and sometimes even wrap around the nerve. I allow the third molar to grow and hopefully find a reasonable eruption path prior to the completion of development of its roots. If I find that there is too much pressure being placed on the 12 year molars, I will refer for evaluation prior to the full development of the roots. What this accomplishes is the removal of the third molars with a much reduced chance of damage to the nerve. As in most situations, timing is everything. Our protocol consists of consistent retainer wear as soon as braces are removed. We then monitor the third molars until they either come in or are removed. Consistent retainer wear is more than sufficient in maintaining that beautiful smile through the process. In fact, we are recommending long term night time wear of the retainer even if the third molars are removed. As it turns out, the eruption of the third molars is the most well known, but not the only factor which can cause shifting of the teeth over time. f you suffer from diabetes, there is a probability that you may experience a sugar spike in the mornings in spite of not having eaten for a couple of hours. Scientists believe that because of hormones released during the night (growth hormones, cortisol, glucagon, epinephrine), your insulin resistance may be stronger, hence the elevated levels in blood sugar. A small spike in fasting glucose level is normal for most people, but if your numbers are too high or you are waking up with headaches or sweating, this could be an indication that something is wrong. Your blood glucose may be too low at night or you may be experiencing what is known as the dawn phenomenon—when the body increases sugar levels to make sure there is enough energy for the person to wake up in the morning. If you are experiencing this problem frequently, of course you want to talk to your doctor for professional advice. Chances are, however, you just need to implement lifestyle changes that will help resolve the problem. Keeping your nutrition on point and exercising frequently may be all you need to help alleviate this condition. In a study that looked at data from 1990-2016, scientists discovered high fasting plasma glucose had increased by 76% in US. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in April, revealed high body mass index (BMI) and fasting plasma glucose are two of three important risk factors and are steadily increasing. Both conditions are related to diet and lifestyle choices and can be preventable—in some cases they can be completely eradicated. In fact, it is possible for patients to eventually get off insulin prescription if they are willing to implement changes in their lifestyle and nutrition. “US residents are not consuming a healthy diet; they tend to consume more calories than needed,” the article highlights. “Rising BMI is driving up fasting plasma glucose levels and diabetes.” Alarmed by the findings and how dire the situation is, authors of this study made a call to action by stating it is imperative that Americans control and reduce their weight as well as for our country to develop a comprehensive program to improve the US diet. Given the overwhelming research that continues to show the trend of how our health is directly impacted by our dietary choices, it is important that individuals work with qualified practitioners to really dig deep and find the root cause of disease—this is the goal of the functional medicine approach. If your doctor quickly prescribes medication and has never asked you what your diet looks like, it may be time to start looking for another doctor. At Bellissimo Medical we do not simply prescribe medication to put a patch on the injury; we look at family history and underlying causes of disease. We work closely with patients to optimize their health in a way that is not possible through traditional medicine. If you are suffering from diabetes or simple want to improve and balance overall health, we can help. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Simone Kaplan from Davie made it to the final rounds at the National Spelling Bee. A student at St Bonaventure, Samantha rounded out her third year trying to capture the title. She placed ninth and did a fantastic job. I watched the final rounds and was routing for her. The eight remaining contestants were all named as co- champions. Great job Samantha. We are all so proud of you!!!! Davie’s Hurricane preparedness expo was a great success. Being prepared is the most important thing to remember as we enter hurricane season. Follow all the recommendations listed in every guide that is circulated by the town, news media and Broward County. It is for your safety and we hope that you will take every alert seriously. The biggest problem during this rainy time of year is flooding. Don’t gamble with your life! If an area is flooded “go around, don’t drown”! Even if it is a street you travel regularly you don’t know if the road has been damaged or if you swerve to avoid oncoming vehicles that you may go off road and into a swollen canal that has gone over the bank. If we have not yet put up detour signs, don’t assume it is safe and call us immediately. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Let me remind everyone that we have a turn out program for Davie horses at Robbins Park. For an application and a copy of the steps to take please go to our website at www.davie-fl.gov. Have a wonderful and safe summer. There will be no council meetings for a while. I am looking forward to kicking back and taking a few weeks to relax and unwind so I can be re-energized for our busy schedule starting again on July 31. Celebrating the American Spirit BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY ew days in the year stir up more excitement and pride than Independence Day. The pageantry, parades, flags and fireworks symbolize deep-rooted patriotism for our nation, the sacrifices made to maintain our values and the pride we have in being Americans. But, at the heart of it all are the patriots who made it possible. From the founding of this great nation 243 years ago, our strong and vibrant American fabric has been woven by the courageous men and women who took bold actions and immense risks to do what was right, not merely what was popular. Many lost their lives in pursuit of the American dream, and today we stand tall as a nation thanks to their sacrifices. I love this country — and all the opportunities it has afforded me. I grew up in the birthplace of our nation, a short distance from Independence Hall in Philadelphia where our Founding Fathers signed two of the most important documents in U.S. history — the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. These individuals placed their lives on the line so that they, and future generations of Americans, could pursue the noble ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I am living proof of the American dream. In what other nation in the world could a poor black kid from the inner city defy the odds at every turn and one day hold the honor of serving as sheriff for one of the largest and greatest public safety agencies in the nation? I owe a debt of gratitude — we all do — to those who came before us and fought for our freedoms. On Independence Day, we honor the men and women in uniform that valiantly put themselves in harm’s way, many making the ultimate sacrifice, to protect our American way of life. We also recognize those who committed themselves to justice and equality: individuals, such as civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Susan B. Anthony, who patriotically pursued equal rights at a time of great civil discord and whose actions are a testament to the American spirit. We must also give thanks to the everyday men and women — the mothers, fathers, teachers, mentors, factory technicians and fast food workers, who keep our country moving forward. Patriotism resides in all of us. On this Independence Day, let’s not only honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, but also look inside ourselves as we carry the torch for future generations. Our patriotism is not what we show on the outside; it’s what lies inside each of us: the love of country, dedication to greatness, commitment to equality and pursuit of justice for all. Let us all strive to do what is right, not what is easy or popular. Our nation was founded on these patriotic ideals, and it is up to us to continue that legacy.

15 Tips to Ensure the Safety and Security of Your Home BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR

W

hen was the last time you thought about the safety and security of your home? I have not written about this issue for some time – so, if it has been a while, then right now is probably a good time to start thinking about it. Consider whether you do any of the points below. If not, it might be a good time to start implementing these simple precautions today: 1. Store gas safely. If you keep a propane tank for your gas grill or filled gasoline cans on hand, do not store them inside your home. Put them in a safe and secure place where children cannot access them. 2. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. And always take note of the last time you inspected them. Check the batteries and ensure that they are not collecting lint and dust. If you can, integrate them, so that if one goes off in the kitchen, the detectors throughout the house also are triggered. Set a note in your calendar to replace the batteries every 6 months. 3. Upgrade to a mailbox with a lock. This will ensure that mail with sensitive information won’t just sit outside for the taking. 4. Ensure that extension cords used outside are made specifically for outdoor appliances. Others can cause fires or trip, causing other issues. 5. Avoid leaving notes on your front door. Don’t alert intruders to the fact that you won’t be home. This is the case even if you are expecting a package. 6. Prepare for power outages. If you experience a power outage, the food in the freezer should last for up to 48 hours. With hurricane season upon us, consider getting a generator and always stock up on nonperishable food. 7. Place oily rags outside to dry. Then, store these rags in a metal can with a secure lid. 8. Never charge a non-rechargeable battery. This could make it explode. 9. Add landscaping around windows. To dissuade burglars from getting into windows, plant thorny shrubs and bushes. 10. Publicize your home security system. Place the company’s decals and signs around your home and yard. Even if you don’t have any alarm, buy and place signs anyway to dissuade burglars. 11. Keep debris and grass trimmings off the driveway. This demonstrates that someone is home. 12. Set your home phone’s ringer on mute whenever you go on vacation. If a burglar is staking out your home, your ringing phone won’t be a dead giveaway. 13. Place a hold on your mail and newspaper before you travel. Don’t let it pile up. Best practice, get a post office box. 14. Ask a friend or neighbor to park their car in your driveway while you are away. This way, a burglar will always think someone is home. 15. Avoid posting on social media when you are out of town. Burglars often search social media sites to see who in the neighborhood is away from home. Again, with hurricane season upon us and the fact that you might have to vacate your home, these safety measures should be put in place NOW.
