It’s Time to Go Back to School

I

t is hard to believe that the summer is already coming to an end. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 21st is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well: neighborhood school, charter school, private school or virtual school. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Davie is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area, in addition to almost every after-school activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Ana or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at WindmillHealth@ att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

The community outreach organization is hosting its Annual Back to School Drive, which benefits South Florida children in grades kindergarten through fifth. Donations can be dropped off through August 10. “The donations we receive for the Back to School Drive help children begin the school year on equal footing with their peers,” said Jeanne Tamargo, Executive Director of HOPE Outreach Center. “Children who have all the tools they need to attend school have an increased chance of success in school. Success in school will help break the chain of poverty. HOPE makes a tangible difference.” The goal of the drive is to collect donations of 400 fully equipped new backpacks, filled with grade and gender appropriate school supplies for the 2017/18 school year. Some of the needed supplies includes: backpacks, #2 pencils, glue sticks, notebook paper, composition books, crayons, color pencils, pens, safety scissors, baby wipes, Kleenex and more. For a complete backpack supply list by grade, visit www.hopeoutreachfl.org. Those who want to donate, but are unable to shop, can send a check or gift card and a HOPE volunteer will purchase the backpacks and supplies for them. “It takes time and effort for people to donate, and we are grateful for their effort and generosity,” said Tamargo. Town of Davie Offers CERT to Train Residents to Respond in a Disaster BY DEBBY TEICH

urricanes, tornadoes, plane crashes and building collapses, as well as other natural disasters and large scale tragic events, are often reminders that we are all vulnerable. If Davie were to experience a true emergency, communication failures and road blockages might prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment’s notice through 911. It could take hours or even days for public safety personnel to reach everyone in need. Members of Davie’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) are trained to respond in an emergency to help themselves, as well as their friends, families, and neighbors until the proper help arrives. The next CERT

training class will be held on August 29 at the Davie Fire Administration building. There is no cost associated with the team. CERT is a FEMA program that educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills. CERT members use the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace. They are able to provide basic care that will help limit further injury to disaster victims and lessen the possibility of further damage to property. CERT members also are encouraged to take a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in the community. In order to qualify for Davie CERT, team members must be over 18 years old and live or work in the Town of Davie. Training is usually delivered in three hour sessions, one evening a week, over a seven to eight week period. The class, which contains both instruction and practical application of skills, covers: Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Fire Suppression, Disaster Medical Operations, Light Search and Rescue Operations, Disaster Psychology and Team Organization, Disaster Psychology & Team Organization, Disaster Simulation and more. Once participants complete their training, they encouraged to stay involved and to continue practicing the skills they learned.

Trainers offer periodic refresher sessions to reinforce the basic training. The CERT team may also sponsor events, such as drills, picnics, neighborhood clean ups, and disaster education fairs to keep team members involved and trained. Fred Unger plans to sign up for CERT. He wants to ensure that he is prepared if a hurricane hits his new home in Davie. “We cannot ignore the fact that we live in an area where hurricanes strike,” said Unger. “I want to make sure that I am able to help my family and neighbors if we experience a hurricane or some other type of disaster.” The Davie Fire Administration building is located at 6901 Orange Drive. For information, call the Davie Fire Rescue at 954797-1213 during normal working hours or visit www.davie-fl.gov.

elebrating its 25th season serving South Florida, Dance Theatre continues to provide our community with excellence in dance education. Winners of both the prestigious “Best of the West” and the coveted “Reader’s Choice” awards for the past several years, its unique combination of love and learning has allowed Dance Theatre to dominate the local dance landscape. So what is it that makes this place so special? Why do dancers of every age, skill level and ambition seek to make Dance Theatre their home away from home? “It’s simple, really,” says owner Michelle McGrath Gerlick. “We hire the best instructors in the business, provide our students with only the most current training techniques, and, most importantly, treat every child who walks through our doors as if they were our very own.” “Awards are nice, and our trophies are beautiful,” Michelle continues, “but that’s not what we strive for. We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it thoroughly. We train exceptional dancers, yes, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models, and we care deeply about the impact we have on these children’s lives. When a parent tells me their daughter has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That is why we do this.” Clearly, people have taken notice. With four schools in Broward (including their new Plantation Promenade location), one in Wellington, and yet another in Sandy Springs, Georgia, Dance Theatre has grown into the largest school of its kind anywhere in the Southeastern U.S. It is also home to DTC, a dance company over 150 strong, which performs at amazing local venues like Miami Heat, Miami Dolphin, and Florida Marlins games, as well as distant venues like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, and this year a performance on board the Serenade of the Seas for Royal Caribbean. In addition, Dance Theatre boasts the national champion DTX Competition Team, an elite group of dancers who challenge

all the best from other schools. DTX just returned from the Onstage America National Finals in Orlando where they achieved the highest scores in nearly every category. In addition, the title of Miss Junior Onstage America went to Karly Cohen; Zoe Ratner was named Miss Teen Onstage America; and Chiara Gonzalez, the reigning Miss Senior Onstage America, once again received the highest score in the Senior Solo division. We call that a Clean Sweep. If any prospective dancers still need convincing, consider this… Dance Theatre is so good that it has attracted the attention of some other South Florida heavyweights. Most recently, the Miami Dolphins asked them to design, choreograph and perform the entire halftime show to salute our U.S. armed forces. DTC, DTX, and the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders joined together to entertain the crowd and honor our fighting men and women. “We were so honored, so humbled, and so excited for the opportunity to show our support for our troops,” says Michelle. The Dolphins were so impressed that Dance Theatre has now been asked to do it again at the Dolphin-Raiders game this November. “This is another amazing opportunity to showcase our girls, and show our support for our hometown team. We are truly blessed.” Dance Theatre offers a comprehensive program where dancers ages 3 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline. They include the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, etc. For those interested in joining the Dance Theatre family, there are several ways. First, you may call the studio at 954434-4443 for the Davie/Southwest Ranches location (in the Publix Center on Griffin & 148th Ave.), and speak to someone today. You may also visit their website, www.dancetheatre.net, view the appropriate Fall Schedule, and fill out the simple online registration form. If you prefer to register in person, the Davie/Southwest Ranches location is open Monday – Friday from 8:30 – 2:30 through August 11th. The Fall Session begins Monday August 21st 2017.

NSU University School Students Win 1st Place at JA National Competition

SCHOOL NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

A

group of students from NSU University School may have discovered the next “big idea.” Alpha Necessities won 1st place in the nation at the Junior Achievement National Student Leadership Summit for their Car Can, an in-car trash that fits conveniently into any car’s cup holder. Its clever design allows users to throw away small items to keep trash off the seats and streets. Junior Achievement is an organization that strives to teach students across the world valuable business lessons. For the company program, students create a real live company for the duration of the school year. Sam Blum, vice president of sales, says that the idea for the Car Can came to them as they were driving. “We really wanted to have an innovative solution

to a problem that would reach new markets to solve a community problem and fulfill our social responsibility,” said Sam. “We noticed the trash that clutters our cars and the roads around us. We wanted to create a product that would solve both issues.” After conducting market research to see what type of trash Car Can falls into the cup holders and crevices of people’s cars, they learned that it typically consisted of smaller items, such as wrappers, tissues, and receipts. The students wanted to create something that was unobtrusive, convenient, and affordable. They also wanted it to be innovative and communicate a social message. Included with every Car Can is a “no littering” pledge card and a “got trash?” sticker. The students also donated over 10% of their profits to Keep America Beautiful, a non-profit focused on beautifying our roads and communities. “Not only has the Car Can proven to keep customers’ cars neat and clean, but it also holds a very important movement with Alpha Necessities team members proudly hold their 1st place trophies. Photo (l to it,” said Sam. “Our motto is, ‘Off r): Ethan Chase, Noah Besner, Christopher Hagen, Ashish Ramesh and Sam Blum

our streets and off my seats.’ The Car Can is a helpful solution in itself to ending littering.” Although Junior Achievement mandates that the students liquidate their companies after the competition, team members are still using the product and so are many others. They produced 1,500 Car Cans that sold out quickly. They sold approximately 350 Car Cans at school and community events for $10. They also had two corporate customers that used the Car Can as a promotional item. Waste Connections bought 110 and AutoNation purchased over 1.000. Five team members attended the competition, including: Sam Blum, V.P. Sales; Noah Besner, V.P. Finance; Ethan Chase, V.P. Supply Chain; Christopher Hagen, V.P. Marketing; and Ashish Ramesh, finance team member (who participated in place of Jordan Ellman, president). There were also 13 other company members that did not attend, but were instrumental in the team’s success. During the competition, Alpha Necessities had four minutes to present. They spent hours practicing to perfect their pitch. “I believe the judges loved our product so much, because it was a solution in itself.,” said Sam. “It was relatable for any parent or driver, and it was so successful. Additionally, they loved our movement and all the lessons we learned from the project.”

College Academy at Broward College Students Receive BEF Scholarships BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he Broward Education Foundation (BEF) recently awarded more than $750,000 in scholarships to 207 students that graduated from Broward County public high schools. All of the recipients, who started college this fall, received scholarships from the Foundation that ranged from $500 to four year Florida Prepaid plans. Two College Academy at Broward College graduates, Daimi Batista and Jasi Romero Gonzalez, were among them. During high school, Daimi volunteered at the library, YMCA and the front desk at the office. She was also a member of the Students Against Destructive Decisions club and worked a part-time job on the weekends. She was awarded a two-year prepaid scholDaimi Batista arship from the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. She hopes to finish her nursing prerequisites at Broward College and then plans to transfer to Florida International University. She wants to major in Nursing and become a Nurse Practitioner. “I was truly excited to receive this scholarship, because I was always working hard in high school,” said Daimi. “It is always nice to be rewarded for all the hard work one has done.” Jammal Davenport, keynote speaker, scholarship donor and Broward County resident, delivered a moving message during the presentation. He talked about the challenges he faced growing up, raised by a single teenage mother surrounded by negative social influences. Despite the adversities he faced, he graduated from college. Today, he gives back through the “Sprouting Scholar Award” scholarships that he and his wife, Amber, established with BEF. They created the

scholarships for those who possess academic potential to be exceptional students. “Some scholars have not sprouted to their fullest potential, not because they cannot perform academically but because they simply have not had the best start to success,” said Davenport. “Students are a harvest of knowledge waiting to sprout in better conditions.” BEF awards scholarships to qualifying students who fall short of their financial need to pursue a post-secondary education. The scholarships are made possible by the generous support of companies, organizations and individual donors. “We are driven by the immense need to help our students fulfill their dream of attending college,” said BEF Board Chair Christina Fischer. Jasi Romero Gonzalez “With the generous support of business and community leaders like Jammal and Amber, we continue to make a profound impact on the students who need it most in our community. Many times students just need help along the path to success. That’s what we do at Broward Education Foundation. Through our game-changing initiatives, we give our Broward County Public School students the best opportunities to excel in and out of the classroom. We congratulate all of our scholarship recipients and wish them the best of everything in college and in life.” Over the last 34 years, through a partnership of BEF, the School Board of Broward County, local universities, businesses and community leaders, more than 5,500 scholarships totaling nearly $12 million have been awarded to provide BCPS students who have the desire to pursue a post-secondary education with the opportunity to fulfill that dream.

Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement

Is Poor Gut Health Hindering Your Weight Loss Efforts? BY JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE

I

n the last decade, scientists have paid close attention to the gut/brain connection, and numerous studies have linked gut health to an array of health conditions. If you have been carrying some excess weight, guess what? Ensuring you have a healthy gut will help you feel better by regaining lost energy, and it may also give your body a much-needed push to shed those extra pounds. The collective genetic material of all your microbes is known as microbiome, a mixture of more than 100 trillion microorganisms that can affect a wide range of biological functions. We carry three pounds of it in our gut! Bacteria are the oldest form of life on earth, but there’s the good and the bad. If you end up with a less than desirable mix, a lot can go wrong - including problems with digestion and nutrient absorption. Having the right flora in your gut, for example, decreases the amount of fat that is absorbed by the intestines, which pushes it out in the waste. Even hormone production is linked to what happens in your gut, and it is no secret that hormonal imbalances are at fault for those rounder midlines. Keep in mind your gut has to get rid of toxins and break down all the foods you are consuming. What if it can’t do it efficiently, because it doesn’t have the right tools? Unfortunately, more and more Americans are suffering from unhealthy guts because of poor nutritional choices. The situation is reaching epidemic proportions, especially considering the fact that digestive disease is responsible for many other chronic health conditions. The good news is that healing is only a choice away. The solution to having a healthy gut falls solely on a person’s willingness to make the correct nutritional choices. The power of food cannot be underestimated - it is crucial in keeping our bodies looking good and operating at optimum capacity. A healthy balanced diet coupled with supplementation are the first steps if you are serious about regaining control of your health. But with so many different supplements available over the counter, along with an advertising frenzy for products that promise to bring back the “good” bacteria into your gut or make you “regular” again, it is very easy to feel overwhelmed and confused. This is why it is important to work with a qualified practitioner who can guide you in the right direction. As a functional medicine practice, Bellissimo Medical offers patient advice on how to restore health and balance through proper nutrition and medical-grade supplements. We look at you as an individual, analyze your history, and customize a plan tailored to your needs because we understand no plan fits all. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954384-8989. ast month’s editorial (Part 1) covered the process in deciding upon the need, and therefore use, of sedation dentistry. This process requires the consideration of many factors, ranging from the child’s dental needs and age to family finances. This month’s article will assume the need and focus mostly on available options. In other words, it will tend to be less emotional and more scientifically driven. The major criteria in choosing a specific sedative agent is the depth of sedation desired. The concept of level of sedation is so important that most professional organizations categorize sedation not by the individual drugs or route of administration, but rather through the level of sedation created. The categorized levels of sedation are the following: minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia. The importance of this distinction is that a facility must be adequately staffed and equipped to monitor the level of sedation used. It is important to note that facilities offering different modes of sedation are strictly regulated and go through an annual recertification process. In an effort to simplify the discussion, I will review some sedative medications based on mode of delivery, as this is usually how they are presented in the office setting. Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is the only inhalation sedative used in pediatric dentistry. It is used as a “minimal sedative” mostly for its relief of anxiety. It is mixed in combination with pure oxygen, which assures proper concentration of oxygen to the body. Its excellent safety record, along with versatility of use, makes it the most commonly used sedative agent in pediatric dentistry. The oral sedatives can potentially span all of the levels of sedation. For example, Diazapam (Valium) or Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), when used by themselves, are mostly used as minimal sedatives. However, when used in larger doses, or in combination with other oral sedatives, these agents can cross over into moderate sedation or even deep sedation. There are many factors having to do with their absorption through the digestive system which make them more unpredictable in terms of the degree of sedation as well as duration of effect. For this reason, their use is not usually recommended for extensive treatment plans and is usually titrated from visit to visit. The sedatives delivered intravenously are used for the purpose of deep sedation. The use of these agents can be used for extended treatment times and can usually be reversed if needed by antagonist agents. Thus, intravenous sedation is the most versatile and predictable technique used in the dental office. General anesthesia, practically speaking, provides for similar conveniences as intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia must be performed in a hospital setting and is specifically used for patients who have a higher potential for airway obstruction. When considering the use of sedation for your child, it is important to recognize that one form of sedation is not inherently better than another. Be open to all options and consider which is most appropriate for the individual patient and situation. The goal of proposed treatment should not only be the effective completion of needed dental work, but more importantly doing so with a resultant positive attitude and safety of the child. This cannot be consistently achieved with a one size fits all approach. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

What Is Divorce Planning? BY EVAN BARON

O

ver the past several years, it has come to my attention that many couples who are considering a dissolution of marriage are attempting to initiate the process in a more civilized manner. Instead of retaining an attorney, filing for the dissolution and serving their spouse, they first seek to try and resolve it by reaching an agreement. This process obviously has many possible advantages. It is obviously less costly, since the costs of litigation can be expensive. By dissolving the marriage in a rational manner, it usually leaves the couple on much friendlier terms after it is finalized. Most importantly, the couple is able to decide what is best for them and what is best for their children, instead of being told what is best by a judge. I am not suggesting that this process can work in all cases, but there certainly seems to be a movement towards this manner of resolution. A couple who wishes to resolve their marriage by negotiation should deal with each other in good faith. If there are hidden assets or attempts to gain an advantage in the negotiation, a fair and equitable resolution will not be reached. In some relationships, one party may be the person in charge of finances and, as such, may have greater knowledge of the financial position of the parties.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

It is important to understand that once an agreement is signed, it is binding on both parties and very difficult to set aside. A settlement without all the information and without proper advice can often lead to inequitable results. I suggest that even if it is the intention of both parties to settle their dissolution without litigation, it is still beneficial to retain an attorney to counsel you. Of course, one attorney cannot represent both parties, but getting attorney’s involved to insure that the agreement that is reached is equitable and consistent with Florida Law can be a great benefit. I have been retained by several individuals who are in the process of negotiating a settlement with their spouse. They are seeking my guidance and expertise to assist them in reaching an equitable and lawful agreement. Most individuals do not have knowledge of certain aspects of the law and, as such, it is to their benefit to have counsel. Once an attorney is retained, a possible settlement can be discussed. Financial information can be required to insure that there is full financial disclosure. After discussing a possible agreement with the client, a proposal can be sent to either opposing counsel or, if not represented, the other spouse. This will start the negotiation process without the stress of time limitations and potential litigation. I call the above process Divorce Planning and I suggest anyone contemplating a dissolution should consider this as the starting point. If negotiations fail, the more traditional method will still be available. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Home Prices – Where Are We Headed?

H

ow can buyers be assured they are paying market value for their new home? Are our rising home prices creating fear in the market place for first-time homeowners? On most listing appointments, I am asked, “You are the expert, what’s our best number?” Showing my Sellers the data that I research to come up with the best price for their home is one of my biggest challenges. However, most homes today are selling within 96% of their originally listed price.

Pricing is key.

Even though our homes prices in Cooper City and Davie are steadily rising, there is so much “pent-up demand” for homes. If the price is right, the home will sell. If a buyer is on the fence, the home usually gets sold out from under him with multiple bids on the table. Buyers feel more threatened by rising mortgage rates than rising home prices. However, NAR has this to say: “Mortgage rates have been stuck in a holding pattern in recent months, which is a relief for spring homebuyers,” said Lawrence Yun (NAR’s Chief Economist). “With price growth showing little sign of slowing, prospective first-time buyers will be the most sensitive to any sudden uptick in rates in the months ahead.” Price per square foot in Davie has risen from $188 a year ago to $191 and is steadily rising. Yun’s prediction and the rising cost of housing will surely affect the buying power of the new homeowner. In Cooper City, price per square foot has risen from $170 to $190 – now a contender with Davie.

What about average prices in our areas?

Cooper City remains close with average for “sale price” at $545,000 and average “closed price” at $549,000. On the other hand, Davie’s average “for sale” price is $997,000 and average “closed price” is $501,000. Months of inventory for single-family homes in both cities is indicative of a seller’s market - extremely low.

What about our fear of another housing bubble?

As home values continue to rise, some are questioning whether we are approaching another housing bubble. Zillow reported: “National home values have surpassed the peak hit during the housing bubble and are at their highest value in more than a decade.” Though that statement is correct, we must realize that just catching up with prices of a decade ago does not mean we are at bubble numbers. Also, Real Estate is local. It is great to see that our markets have recovered since the bubble of 2005-2012. Because Davie’s and Cooper City’s inventory mostly deals with single family homes, we should not experience what the over-building of the condo market. If there should be fear anywhere in our area, it should be the fear of rising rental prices. “Rents rose 0.7 percent over the past year to a Zillow Rent Index (ZRI) of $1,412 per month.” It takes a real professional, either on the buy or listing side, to assess the best market value of any home. The tools, the knowledge and the experience get the job done for our customers. Zona Horton has been successfully selling Real Estate in South Florida for over 30 years. She recently joined the international Keller Williams family of companies and will continue serving Davie, Cooper City and surrounding cities. Call her for all your Real Estate needs. Preventing Teen Suicide Begins at Home BY SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL

ASK THE SHERIFF

I

n my nearly 40 years in law enforcement, I have chased and brought countless criminals to justice, operated undercover, worked as SWAT commander and now proudly serve as sheriff to the 1.8 million residents of Broward. Yet all that pales in comparison to my most challenging and rewarding job: father to my triplets, Blair, Brett and Blake. As any parent can attest, our children are our most prized treasures. From the instant you first lock eyes with your newborns to the moment they pack up to go to college or set out to begin their careers, our most important job is ensuring the safety and security of our children. While we share in the exhilaration of their successes, we also live in constant worry about their well-being as they ride the roller coaster ups and downs all children face daily as they come of age. Sadly, despite our best efforts as parents, some of our children struggle to overcome these obstacles. The enormous pressures they face lead some to tragically take their own lives. As a parent, we often choose to believe that these types of tragedies can never happen to us. The startling statistics, however, say otherwise.

Years in

Weston Each year in the United States, thousands of teens commit suicide and many more attempt to take their lives. In fact, suicide is a leading cause of death among young people in the U.S. A recent survey showed one in six high school students seriously considered taking their own lives, and one in 13 reported attempting suicide. These alarming statistics are even more troubling considering suicides and attempted suicides are on the rise. There are a wide range of reasons why teens attempt to take their lives. These include depression, bullying, drug abuse, eating disorders, break ups and general insecurities. Aside from the normal challenges of growing up, our children now must also contend with new technology including social media, which exponentially magnifies exposure from just a handful of people to potentially dozens if not hundreds or thousands. As we all know, the internet can be a tool for good, but can also lead to hatred, intolerance and indecency. Recently, this reared its ugly head in the form of a new, dangerous and potentially deadly “game,” the Blue Whale Challenge. The game encourages individuals to complete 50 self-harming challenges with the final task requiring that individual to commit suicide. Reports claim it is responsible for the deaths of 130 teens in Russia, but these have not been verified. Elsewhere online, bullying runs rampant. Parents must remain vigilant about what their children do online. While it may be difficult for us to understand why our sons or daughters would take their own lives or what motivates them to do so, there are steps we can take to prevent teen suicide. Familiarize yourself with the warning signs; talk openly and candidly with your children; and know how to react and where to go for professional help if needed. If a loved one is harming themself or if you believe he/she is in immediate danger, call 911. For more questions and answers, call dial 2-1-1 for Broward 2-1-1. Through education and awareness, we all can help prevent teen suicide. For information, visit www.sheriff.org.

can’t believe summer is nearing its end and a new school year is ready to begin! As a former teacher, I hope all of our youth had fun and a safe summer. Even though summer is almost over, it is never too late to teach your kids important water safety skills. Parents, the Town of Davie offers terrific swim lessons for children (and adults) six months of age and older at the Pine Island and Betty Booth Roberts Pools. Our trained staff are not only qualified, but they make learning to swim fun. We recently had a seven month old master the art of turning over in the water and floating on her back, without assistance. I am very proud of the Town of Davie’s commitment to the #Saferby4 initiative to make all of our children water safe by their 4th birthday! Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department also offers wonderful programs, events and sports leagues. Be sure to mark your calendars now to remind you when to register for our youth sports leagues. Youth sports are so much more than just a game. They teach children teamwork and discipline, provide social opportunities, and build self-esteem. The benefits to your children are truly endless.

I also invite everyone to join us for several upcoming events that will be hosted at the Davie Arena and the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. In Cowboy Town, on September 9, we celebrate Davie’s roots during the Weekley Brothers Pro Rodeo. The gates will open at 6pm and the performance will begin at 7:30pm. On October 14, Construction Angels will host the 2nd Annual Doc Reno’s Bacon, Blues and Brews Festival. On October 28 and 29, JES Productions will host the 2nd Annual Seafood Festival. All of these great events are “rain or shine” in our covered arena. Also, don’t worry about the heat. The arena has giant fans to keep cool! One of my favorite events each year is the Halloween Happenings event at Robbins Park and Preserve. The park is a perfect setting for a day of “spooktacular” fun! Join Play Davie on October 28 for the Halloween Happenings event, which includes a costume contest, games, youth entertainment, vendors, a pumpkin patch sponsored by the Boy Scouts, and a haunted house sponsored by the South Florida Cloggers. As always, we will be hosting the Horse Costume Contest during the event. I challenge all equestrians to participate this year and make it the biggest horse costume contest to date!
