Back to School in South Florida
S
ummer vacations are a hallmark of modern life. After the final bell of the school year rings, children from across the country anxiously head home, often looking forward to trips abroad, excursions to the beach, local “staycations” or time at summer camps. Summer break, however, does not last forever. Most local kids return to school on August 14th this year. They will bring with them stories of adventure, excitement and maybe even a little bit of boredom. Like vacation options, the number of after-school programs has exploded. There are a myriad of activities and opportunities for families to choose from. Parents also have more choice in how their kids are educated today; rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, parents now decide between their local public school, charter schools, private schools or online learning. So many choices can become overwhelming. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out Our City’s Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide our readers with a useful guide to help get ready for the new school year. Remember to enjoy the last couple weeks of summer. Before you know it, school will have already started.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Bianca – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Annie or Bianca for an appointment. ow entering its 27th season serving South Florida, Dance Theatre remains the top choice for dancers of all ages to train. With four Broward locations, including both Southwest Ranches and their recent addition at Plantation Promenade, Dance Theatre has become an integral part of our community one fabulous dancer at a time. Accolades? Of course. Dance Theatre has been awarded the prestigious “Reader’s Choice” and “Best in the West” awards multiple times. Trophies? Thousands. Dance Theatre’s elite team of competitive dancers, DTX, consistently receives top awards at virtually every competition they enter. Testimonials? You bet. Just ask any mother in the carpool line and they’ll tell you that Dance Theatre has been like a home away from home for their children. So, what is it that makes this place so special? “Our formula is simple” says owner and Director Michelle Gerlick, “We build Dance Theatre beautiful, safe, clean Offers facilities, hire the best Classes teachers in the business, for Children Ages 3 and treat each child and Up that walks through our doors as if they were our very own.” “Awards are nice, and our trophies are beautiful,” Michelle continues, “but that’s not what we strive for. We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it effectively. We train exceptional dancers, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models who help to guide our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me that their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That is why we do this.” Michelle certainly has the pedigree to run one of the nation’s most successful dance programs. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, June Taylor Dancer,

Michelle spent nearly every day of her youth inside her parents’ dance school, the Academy of Ballet Arts, perfecting her craft, and then earned both a degree in Dance from Ohio State University, and a degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern. Her professional credits include performing as a Miami Heat Dancer for the NBA, a “Fly Girl” on Fox Television’s In Living Color, and an NFL Super Bowl Choreographer. the only ones to benefit from the new park. All residents can enjoy the facilities at Flamingo West Park. “None of our small parks with walking paths had restrooms which deterred individuals from getting out and getting active,” notes Trainor. “The creation of this park also provides pavilions for rental for birthday parties and other social gatherings, which we did not have available prior. This park was meant to meet all the milestones to encourage everyone in our community to meet us At the Park.” Trainor says residents can rent the 560-squarefoot community meeting room for private functions. It will also be available to Girl Scout troops, Homeowners Associations, Advisory Boards, and other local groups. On opening night, one of the most popular features at the park was the new playground. The stateof-the-art facility features climbing structures, swing sets and multiple slides all housed underneath a 40 by 50-foot shade structure. The playground is ADA compliant and features wood fiber mulch for safety. For added security, it is surrounded by a chain link fence with accessibility gates.

undreds of families turned out for the grand opening of Flamingo West Park in Cooper City. The 26.3-acre complex fills a void in the City’s recreational needs, offering four synthetic sports fields as well as beautiful walking trails, a fishing pier and an enormous shade-covered playground, along with a community meeting room and four pavilions. “After years of having over-populated fields, it was finally time to expand and create Flamingo West Park,” states Cooper City Facility Coordinator Felicia Trainor. “This park not only alleviates the foot traffic on the fields of our neighboring parks, but the new turf prevents numerous flooding cancellations due to its updated drainage system.” The new sports fields are a much-needed addition for Cooper City, which prior to the Flamingo West Park opening had only two other small sports parks. “The other fields were constantly being overused and the spacing was undersized for the number of participants we have in our programs,” explains Trainor. “Due to the significant wear and tear caused to the fields, down time had to constantly be scheduled for field repairs. Additionally, one rainy day would potentially cause up to four days of game cancellations due to flooding. The new synthetic
sports fields will provide optimal use to allow us to play year-round and with less maintenance.” Trainor points out that the sports teams are not

Navigating Through College Choices Just Got Easier BY LOURDES RODRIGUEZ
Is college on the radar in your household? When it comes to finding the right college fit, campus visits can help narrow down the selection. In-person tours are a helpful step in the college application process, particularly for students interested in competitive four-year schools. According to U.S. News & World Report: “Before choosing the best college to attend, it is important for students to test the waters. Making a college visit and touring the campus can be pivotal in a student’s decision.” In the Sunshine State, the University of Florida’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) in Gainesville, FL is set to host the newly developed NaviGATORing CALS program on two separate dates: September 6 and September 13. The program provides a full day of experiences on campus tailored to a student’s areas of interest. CALS is part of UF/IFAS, the agricultural, natural resources and life sciences division of the university. NaviGATORing CALS provides high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to shadow a CALS Ambassador, learn more about the college and the UF admissions process (both for freshmen and transfer students), sit in on classes related to their
major of interest, learn about numerous campus organizations and activities, and explore the unique majors, minors and professional development opportunities in CALS. “The NaviGATORing CALS program was designed to show prospective students what it’s like to live a day in the life of a CALS student,” said CALS Dean Elaine Turner. “With personalized schedules based on each participant’s subject area of interest, our tour attendees experience all UF and CALS have to offer. This includes how our more than 20 majors can assist in preparing them for a long-term career in health care, natural resources, sustainability, food systems, human wellbeing and agriculture industries.” It is important for students to know what they want to get out of a college experience before stepping on campus. Turner encourages students to consider these three tips to help with the college selection process: 1. Think about how a college or university’s strengths align with personal career goals and skill sets.
2. Pick a college based on academic programs, extracurricular and hands-on learning experiences, location and faculty teaching excellence. 3. If students can imagine themselves at a particular institution they are on the right track to selecting the school that will be a great fit for them. To learn more information about NaviGATORing CALS and to register for a tour, visit: https://cals.ufl. edu/prospective/navigatoringcals/. n The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) administers the degree programs of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS). The Difference ‘Why Not?’ Makes. Memory care guided by positivity, purpose, and passion. As we look back over our lives, it’s our experiences, career paths, and achievements that define who we are. But, just as someone’s arthritis or diabetes shouldn’t define who they are, neither should their diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s may slowly erode a person’s memories and cognitive skills, but, the core of a person’s identity and passions remain. The details of the past—and the words to express them—might be harder to conjure up now, but the ability to be genuinely happy and purposeful in the
moment are ever-present. Engagement is not only possible, it’s necessary to stave off further decline. So, when it comes to memory care in a community setting, the delivery of daily care must be just as one-of-a-kind as the people receiving it. That’s the basic foundation of The Artis Way— the unwavering philosophy of Artis Senior Living of Davie. The Artis Way is their refreshingly different approach to memory care—as it is in their 17 purpose-built sister communities. “When you change the way you operate from ‘we can’t do that!’ to ‘why not?,’ amazing things happen!” Part of Miriam’s job as Director of Partnership Development is to collaborate with families to learn every detail about their loved ones. “We take the time to get to know what will make your mom or dad, wife or husband smile when they walk in here. And we keep ourselves open to possibilities. We really try to give people back the lives they used to love—the aspects of them that their families thought were gone for good.”
The Artis staff genuinely loves to make the seemingly impossible possible—an exceedingly unusual operating standard in the field of senior living and memory care. Artis Senior Living prides itself on the moments they’ve been able to create for memory care residents and their families. Ronald, a former baseball coach, longed to play baseball again. So the Artis staff transformed a portion of the community into an indoor baseball diamond. The Artis staff planted rose bushes outside of the bedroom window for Mary, an avid gardener. George, a proud veteran, was welcomed on move-in day by an honor guard, National Guardsmen, and local legislators. Artis is proof that you can treasure each person’s uniqueness with dignified, individualized memory care. Because disease doesn’t define a person. Their indomitable spirit does. Danielle Hale, Chief Economist at Realtor.com, stated: “Lower mortgage rates, higher wages and more homes for sale have helped counteract rising home prices, and ultimately, made it so that buyers are able to afford more than last year,” said Danielle Hale, realtor.com® ‘s chief economist. “However, the boost in affordability has yet to translate into more home sales perhaps because--while the shift in trend is welcome, the current monthly savings are small and some buyers may be waiting for markets to tip further in their favor.” Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, stated: “Lower-than-usual mortgage rates have led to the increase in pending sales for May. “Rates of 4% and, in some cases even lower, create extremely attractive conditions for consumers. Buyers, for good reason, are anxious to purchase and lock in at these rates.” Yun said consumer confidence about home buying has risen, and he expects more activity in the coming months. “The Federal Reserve may cut interest rates one more time this year, but there is no guarantee mortgage rates will fall from these already historically low points,” he said. “Job creation and a rise in inventory will nonetheless drive more buyers to enter the market.”

The Facts About “Laughing Gas”

ike many parents in our community, I tend to approach the use of any medicine for my children with a discerning eye. What are the risks and benefits of its use? How long will it last in the system? Are there any side effects I should look for or take home instructions needed? It is for this reason, that I am happy to educate the public on the use and safety of Nitrous Oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) for use with the apprehensive pediatric dental patient, when indicated. It is first important to point out the very long history and safe track record of its use. Nitrous oxide (N20) was first discovered by Joseph Priestly in 1772. Interestingly, its use for the first 80 years was mostly for entertainment purposes receiving its current nickname “laughing gas”. In 1845, Horace Wells, a dentist from Hartford CT, demonstrated its use as an anesthetic during the extraction of a wisdom tooth at Harvard University. His work on nitrous oxide would eventually earn him the distinction of being the discoverer of anesthesia. Once accepted by the medical community, its method of delivery had been improved and in turn its impeccable safety record had become established. Nitrous oxide is a gas that is delivered through inhalation. Although early documentation showed safe delivery in its pure form, safety has increased exponentially with its combination with oxygen. The addition of oxygen assures

that there will be no decrease in oxygenation of the body throughout its use. New sophisticated equipment also assures desired concentrations by a titrating delivery mechanism, allows for rapid reversal, and disallows usage of more than 70% nitrous gas. The combination with oxygen has not only made the use of nitrous safer, but has also made its use more versatile. Its first use was prior to the discovery of the local anesthetic, lidocaine. For this reason, it was administered at higher concentrations in order to achieve some form of anesthesia (relief of pain). In the dental environment, it is given at a much lower dosage (much lower than the recommended limit) in order to achieve anxiolysis, or reduction of anxiety. Its safety record at these lower doses is impeccable. In the 1970’s, H. Ruben had documented 3 million cases of its use for dentistry without adverse reaction. In answer to my initial questions, nitrous oxide is a safe and odorless inhalant, which exits the body immediately after removal. The only routine recommendation we give is no ingestion of food or drink 60 minutes prior to its use to eliminate chance of nausea. Although we prefer to treat our patients without the need of an anxiolytic, Nitrous Oxide remains a perfect alternative for pediatric patients who may otherwise have a “bad experience”. Negative experiences in youth have been shown to create long term dental anxiety lasting into adulthood for some dental patients. It is for this reason, that over 80% of all pediatric dentists report using it in their practice. The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. s we begin to age, we notice that our bodies tend to hold more weight and we don’t recover as quickly—energy is lacking and muscle is decreasing. One reason we experience this decline in how or body behaves is that we don’t produce as much Human Growth Hormone (HGH) as we do in our younger years. HGH is produced by the pituitary gland and it is an important hormone for several body processes such as stimulating growth, regulating body composition, keeping up digestive system, insulin levels, energy levels and more. It is no wonder our bodies start to fall apart when its production declines. It is literally the body’s fountain of youth drying up. This is why HGH therapy is so popular—it helps rejuvenate the body and fight signs of aging. But HGH Therapy is not an option for everyone and some of the treatments are still illegal and controversial. What if there was a better way to get our bodies to get that fountain of youth flowing again, naturally and safely? Good news. There is! In recent years, functional medicine is moving toward a simpler, cutting-edge approach for antiaging treatments through the use of peptides. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids and these amino acids are the building blocks of protein. So we can think of peptides as small proteins. Protein is what makes up much of the body’s tissues organs and skin. What is so innovative about the use of peptides is that scientist have discovered thousands of them. They are so specific they can be used to stimulate specific cell receptors—this is us telling the body what we want it to do. And with this approach, we can effectively fight disease, aging, weight gain and so much more. The use of one specific peptide or a combination of peptides can affect important processes such as stimulating the pituitary gland to secrete growth hormone, for example. This definitely trumps having patients taking synthetic hormones and this is why peptide therapy is becoming the treatment of choice in functional medicine. More HGH in the body translates into more muscle, better performance and better recovery. This is the reason peptide therapy can be used to target weight loss, improve sports performance and increase overall sense of well-being. Because this unique treatment offers specificity and control, patients and doctors can tailor results. Whether you are looking to reverse signs of aging, shed a few pounds or have more energy at the gym, it is imperative that you work with qualified practitioner who can study and understand your needs as well as medical history in order to make an adequate recommendation. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. ASK THE MAYOR
Our Town, Davie BY MAYOR JUDY PAUL he Town of Davie is pleased to announce that Evelyn Roig, Town Clerk, has earned her Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) designation from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. IIMC grants the MMC designation only to those municipal clerks who complete demanding education requirements; and who have a record of significant contributions to their local government, their community and state. The MMC program is an advanced professional designation that prepares participants to perform complex municipal duties. Roig has more than 25 years of experience working in both the county and municipal level. She began working at the Town of Davie in 2009 as the Assistant Town Clerk. In 2014, she transitioned to her current role as Town Clerk. Her tenure in public administration is a testament to her commitment and dedication as a public servant. She has a Master of Public Administration, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Legal Studies and also obtained her paralegal certification from Florida International University. She also is an active member of the Broward Municipal Clerk’s Association. Connecting Through Conversation: An Interfaith Discussion” as part of the Broward 10 Days of Connection which was hosted by the Town of Davie on May 8, 2019 was a success. We hoped those involved saw the value in gathering our community leaders together to find mutual understanding and awareness of one another. The general consensus is to continue the discussion and create other opportunities through the Davie Diversity Dialogue led by Mayor Judy Paul. Davie Diversity Dialogue will host a gathering in September to highlight the community’s role in protecting our precious environment. Topics will include but not be limited to community gardens, Nature-scape and Wildlife Habitat programs, understanding the importance of bees in our gardens, as well as educating the public on the proper way to recycle. The environment knows no bounds or limits. If each house of worship becomes involved and does a project on their campus and shares their experiences and invites each to a butterfly garden opening or joins forces in a neighborhood beautification or community garden project it would be amazing. All cultures have natural remedies stemming from different fruits and herbs, hence an urban forest as diverse as our community. Davie already has community gardens at Robbins Park which we could expand, bringing religions and cultures together in a great new experiment!!!! This could be huge by thinking out of the box!!! Using our collective voices to save the planet are foremost in this endeavor. We will include more information when it is available.

The Issue of Private School BY EVAN BARON his time of year parents are often planning for school for next year. If the child is in public school and he/she is remaining in the same school there usually are no issues to be discussed. If however, one or both of the parents are considering private school certain issues may arise. What school will we enroll the child in? Who will pay for the expense? Is private school even to be considered? If so, will it be religious based? These are some of the questions which often need to be addressed. If the parties have already entered into a Marital Settlement Agreement and Parenting Plan, and there is a provision which states that the minor child(ren) will attend private school; than the parties were wise enough to plan ahead and resolve the issue before it became a topic of litigation. Of course, there still maybe the question of which school will they attend? Often times it depends on cost, distance from home and obviously the schools reputation. It would seem that parents, even divorced parents, could decide what is best for their children. Of course this is not always true. If private school was not originally agreed to, then an Agreement must be worked out between the parties. Private school is not a right, but rather it is a privilege. There are public schools which will provide an education free of charge. In most instances a parent cannot be forced to pay for private school. If however certain conditions exist, the Courts could rule otherwise. For example; if a child has been attending private school for many years then a judge may not want to disturb the child’s education. Of course, this is very much contingent upon the affordability of private school as well as the parent’s ability to contribute. If one of the parent’s do not have the financial means to pay than the other parent could certainly agree to pay 100% of the costs. This however, will not be considered a substitute for a child support obligation. The other issue is whether there is the necessity for private school. Many children have special needs due to learning disabilities or perhaps ADHD. The public schools often do not have the resources to provide for these children. Private school maybe the only answer to insure that they receive the care and education they require. What if one of the parents refuses to enroll the child in a private school and the other parent cannot afford it? Will the courts put the child’s needs first? The law says that in certain cases a judge can order a parent to pay for private school, even if he/she objects. This will only occur if it can be proven that the public school system cannot accommodate the child and the refusing parent has the financial means to contribute. If it is too great a hardship the court’s hands maybe tied. Based upon Florida’s “Shared Responsibility” laws, decisions about school should be a joint decision. Neither parent should take it upon himself/ herself to decide without discussion. As in most instances, a few minutes of constructive dialogue can save hours of litigation.

ASK THE SHERIFF
Committed to Protecting Broward Schools BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY Public safety has always been my highest priority. In the eight months since becoming your sheriff, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has worked hard to address one of the greatest concerns of Broward County – school safety. BSO deputies have undergone intensive training in preparation for any public safety threat. We are working together with the school system to ensure our schools are a safe place to learn for every child in every school. We have made changes, but we will not rest on our accomplishments; we will continue to find better ways to protect our schools. In response to the recommendations of the MSD Commission, we introduced new proactive initiatives throughout BSO. We forged federal partnership agreements with the FBI, FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security training

divisions, focusing on active shooter and rapid response training. We have established a Threat Management Division and improved the way we gather intelligence and respond to potential threats. We now have cutting-edge technology to identify and investigate potentially dangerous threats to our community. An extension of that division is the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), which allows for real-time monitoring and analysis of important investigative information during a critical incident. We also have direct access to video surveillance systems that monitor nearly 10,000 cameras in all Broward County schools. Recently, BSO partnered with SaferWatch, an innovative mobile app that allows users to report non-emergency incidents and crime tips in real time directly to BSO. The app covers more than 440 public, charter and private schools in Broward County and gives students, parents and teachers the ability to submit photos, videos, audio files or text messages anonymously. The information is immediately sent to BSO for appropriate action. It also provides our law enforcement districts with the ability to communicate important real-time information directly with residents. Whether it’s a crime prevention tip, safety alert, traffic advisory or other important information, SaferWatch alerts will be sent directly to your mobile device for immediate notification. I encourage all of our residents to download the free SaferWatch app and subscribe to the BSO district closest to them. Download the app at BrowardAlerts.com. As the new school year approaches, I want to remind our community of some basic safety tips. When driving, approach all crosswalks in and around school areas with caution, and do not text on your cellphone – it’s the law. Observe the posted school zone speed limit. When walking or riding a bike to school, map out the safest route in advance, and always remember to use a crosswalk. For more back-to-school safety tips, please visit sheriff.org/community. Although we have accomplished much these last eight months, we are just getting started. I will never lose sight of our mission: to keep our community – especially our schools – safe. SUCCESS = REWARD You can stay connected by following the sheriff on Twitter @BrowardSheriff or emailing him directly at ask_the_sheriff@sheriff.org.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Struggling with Pelvic Pain? BY RAHIL MALIK M.D. FACOG bdominal pain in women is a common malady. Statistics from the Centre for Disease Control show a national trend with as much as 12-15% of all visits to the emergency room (E.R.) attributed to abdominal pain. However, only a small percentage of these visits are due to emergent conditions and most patients require outpatient visits with specialists to further manage their pain. It is not uncommon for women to struggle with abdominal pain for days, weeks, months and sometimes years, before discovering the cause of their pain and identifying strategies to help fix the source of their pain. The difficulties in identifying the cause behind a patient’s abdominal pain stems from the various organ systems that can potentially give rise to the pain. It can be challenging to identify the cause of the pain and often blood tests, imaging studies (CT, MRI, Ultrasound) and sometimes surgery are required before a final diagnosis can be made. Visits to numerous doctors and undergoing multiple medical tests can be time-consuming, demoralizing and costly for an individual. However, this process can be improved with simple steps that a patient can take towards owning their health and being prepared for their visits. A thorough history and physical exam can allow a physician to identify the most likely culprit behind your pain and reduce the number of diagnostic tests. A visit with your Ob-Gyn can be helpful in your evaluation but an unprepared soul can sometimes find it overwhelming to answer questions on the spot. Nonetheless, you can make your visit beneficial and efficient if you take a few minutes to address these questions and bring to your next appointment. ▸▸ Location – Where is the pain localized? Can you point with your finger to identify a location or is it non-specific and diffuse? ▸▸ Modifying factors – what makes the pain better? What makes it worse? Does eating food minimize your pain? Is your pain worsened with movement? Is your pain linked to your menstrual cycle? Does urinating affect pain? Does your pain worsen or improve with passing stools? These factors can help determine if your pain is arising from your intestines, bladder or uterus/ovary, etc. ▸▸ Novelty – Is the pain acute or is this pain occurring for a longer period of time? Has there been a period of time where you were pain-free? ▸▸ Onset – When did the pain start? ▸▸ Precipitating factors – What caused the pain? Any trauma or strenuous activity? ▸▸ Quality – Is it sharp, dull, throbbing, dull? Is the pain persistent or intermittent? Is your pain daily or only at certain times of the day or week? ▸▸ Radiation – Does the pain travel to any other part of your body? ▸▸ Severity Score – On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your pain? Does the pain fluctuate during the day? ▸▸ Therapies / Tests completed – What imaging tests have you completed in the past? It would be useful to bring copies of imaging reports to your appointment for your physician to review and to compare against newer tests. If there were medications prescribed previously, did it help reduce your abdominal pain?

Pet of the Month
Hi I’m Booboo, a 15 year old fun loving Yorkie. I am a playful male, that enjoys cuddling and liking people’s faces. On my daily walks you’ll often find me playing with other dogs and smelling all trees along the way. My home is in Davie, with my mom who I adore, that has cared for me since I was born. Boiled chicken is my favorite treat. I don’t enjoy the heat for too long, being away from my mom, loud sounds and fast movements. I was last seen hanging out with my girlfriend Mini, a female Yorkie who lives a few foors down from me.

Nuvia Sutton and Erwin van der Bunt escaped the Florida heat and headed out to the Northwest for a visit to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks in Wyoming. The Monarch Lakes couple laced up their hiking boots and relished in all that nature had to offer. From watching Old Faithful erupt and wild animals play to taking in all the spectacular views and dining at historic establishments, the adventurous duo truly appreciated the magnificent treasures that our National Parks behold. But they still took the time to take a photo with Our City a little treasure of their own.
