Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 9/30/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Yasmin or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. T
he Florida Primary Election was on August 28th. We hope you joined us in voting. We feel lucky to live in a country where every citizen has the right to vote, regardless of age, sex or economic standing. According to the Freedom House’s Freedom in the World 2018 report, more than 60% of people on earth live in countries without these basic freedoms. Unfortunately, by some standards, freedom is becoming more constrained here in the United States.

Davie PAL Sponsors Triathlon for Kids and Adults BY DEBBY TEICH
A
rea youth have been practicing their biking, running and swimming skills for the Davie Police Athletic League (PAL) Triathlon for kids, ages 5-17. The event also includes a Super Sprint for adults who may have never tried a triathlon before or want to participate with their kids. The Triathlon will be held on September 16, at 8am, at Bamford Park in Davie for both beginners and experienced athletes. “This is a great introduction into the world of triathlons for both kids and adults,” said Officer Tim Albury, Director of Davie PAL. “It is a great way to start on a path to physical fitness, health and well-being. It is also a great opportunity for kids and parents to participate in a race together, building bonds and relationships that will last a life time.” Packet pick-up is from 10am-2pm at Alex’s Bicycle Shop, 11466 W. State Road 84 in Davie. On September 15 at the Bamford Park pool deck, there will be a walkthrough of the course at 2pm. Since the transition area and finish line are changing, participants are encouraged to walk the course or view it online. Registration will not be available on race day. On race day, the transition is open from 6:45am to 7:30am. The National Anthem will be held at 7:50am and the race begins at 8am. Bike helmets are required. Race belts are suggested. Training wheels are allowed.
Goggles and swim caps are recommended for the pool. Following the race, there will be food, as well as a ceremony with awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each age group, both male and female, as well as finisher medals for all participants. The races will be broken down into six age brackets. Organizers “age up” (per triathlon sporting standards), so children will race according to the age they are as of December 31, 2018. The categories are as follows: ▸▸ 5-7 year olds - Swim (25 yds.), Bike (.5 miles), Run (.25 miles) ▸▸ 8-10 year olds - Swim (100 yds.), Bike (3.1 miles), Run (1K) ▸▸ 11-15 year olds - Swim (200 yds.), Bike (6.2 miles), Run (2K) ▸▸ 16-17 year olds - Swim (250 yds.), Bike (6.2 miles), Run (2K) ▸▸ 18-32 years old - Swim (250 yds.), Bike (6.2 miles), Run (2K) ▸▸ •33- 75 years old - Swim (250 yds.), Bike (6.2 miles), Run (2K)
Proceeds from the triathlon will benefit the programs at Davie PAL, a program designed to build relationships between the Police Department and youth in our community, through educational, athletic and recreational activities. The idea is to help create trust and understanding between police officers and

Cooper City Opens Two Dog Parks
A
s demand increases, cities across the nation are opening dog parks, allowing canines to play without leashes. The City of Cooper City recently cut the ribbon for two new dog parks - Forest Lake Park, 5700 SW 113th Avenue, and Christie Schafale Park, 4900 SW 87th Avenue. Mayor Greg Ross, Commissioner John Sims, Commissioner Lisa Mallozzi, Commissioner James Curran, and Commissioner Jeff Green were among the many people that attended the ribbon cutting. “The City has been considering options for the development of one or more dog parks in response to growing resident interest in local recreational options for their furry family members,” said Michelle Alvarez, Senior Administrative Specialist and Public Information Officer. “We place a very high value on our recreational park spaces in Cooper City. They provide a public space for family recreation, community events and team sports, as well as being a great place to meet your neighbors.” The dog parks were built within existing neighborhood parks, which were already very
popular with Cooper City residents. The dog park at Forest Lake Park is approximately 22,900 sq. ft. and the facility within Christie Schafale Park is approximately 18,000 sq. ft. Both are fully enclosed by six-foot. fencing with double gates at every entrance. They are landscaped with grass and mature trees for abundant shade. They also have puppy play equipment, as well as benches, clean-up bags and water fountains for visiting dogs and their people. There are no restrictions on the size or type of dog that can visit. Each park is divided into two sections, for large (over 25 lbs.) and small (under 25 lbs.). Dogs are allowed to be off leash, as long as they are socialized and well-behaved. “We are so excited to see our Cooper City families enjoying the new dog parks,” said Alvarez. “We encourage visitors to be good neighbors, observe the rules and clean-up after their pups so everyone may enjoy the park.” ■ For information, visit www.CooperCityFL.org.

Sovereign Real Estate Group Offers Final Available Luxury Home Sites in Weston’s Windmill Reserve BY STACEY BOMSER
W
indmill Reserve is one of the most exclusive enclaves of luxury homes in Broward County. The estate residences in this private gated community in Weston are nestled among 139 acres of lakes and accented by pristine preserve views. Sovereign Real Estate Group is pleased to represent 13th Floor Investments in offering the final eight home sites for sale. Broker Robert Coalla with Sovereign Real Estate explains why this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for prospective home buyers. What is the connection between Sovereign Real Estate Group and 13th Floor Investments? Robert Coalla Broker-Sales Associate 13th Floor Investments is an investment and development firm. It purchased in bulk the 22 remaining lots in the exclusive, gated, 94-home community of Windmill Reserve in April 2017. 13th Floor realized that once these lots were sold, there would be no way to recreate such a development as there simply is no more land available in such a desirable community. Sovereign Real Estate Group is a full-service real estate firm and is proudly the exclusive sales representatives for these remaining lots in Windmill Reserve. These are the final lots of this kind available for sale anywhere in Broward County. Has Sovereign Real Estate Group been able to generate new interest in Windmill Reserve? Absolutely! With just one year of sales, we have successfully sold 14 of the luxury home site lots, with only eight remaining. We are confident the Sovereign Real Estate team of professionals will quickly close-out this community. Beyond sale of the home site, what services can you offer to prospective luxury home buyers? Although we are only offering the sale of the lots themselves, we do have financing available through a local community bank to help the buyer purchase the lot, provide the financing for construction of the home, and then have the loan converted into a permanent home mortgage with excellent rates and terms. In addition, we have been referring buyers to three local, reputable luxury home builders that are all currently active in the construction of several homes within the community today. Buyers can meet with these experienced home builders and their architects to explore the many options for designing their new luxury home. Why do you think there has been a resurgence of buyers in this development? Buyers who visit Windmill Reserve are impressed with how magnificent the community looks. It is truly remarkable to see how well the different architectural styles have blended together. This is not your cookie-cutter community. We have homes
that are inspired in the style of a French chateau next to a colonial home that is near a haciendastyle design, a Mediterranean and today’s popular modern-contemporary designs. We are thrilled to be a part of the sale of the final, undeveloped, ready-to-build home sites in the City of Weston. These excellent acre sites are all well priced, offering sidewalks as well as water and sewer. There is nothing like it anywhere. This opportunity will never be available again. Once these lots are gone, they are gone. Why is Weston such a great place to live? Weston is a family-oriented, master-planned community that is continually named one of the best places to live in Florida and the country by prestigious publications such as Money Magazine and Family Circle. According to the City’s website, Weston offers A-rated public schools and excellent private schools; outstanding public safety and the lowest crime rate per capita in the County; 14 park and recreational facilities which play host to cultural and community events and tens of thousands of registrants in organized sports leagues; a Community Center which offers a variety of yearround enrichment classes and programming for all ages and interests, as well as the Weston YMCA
Family Center within the City’s regional park; the lowest combined property taxes, municipal taxes and fees in the County; the lowest millage rate in the County; and meticulously maintained lush landscaping throughout the city. In addition, Weston offers a variety of cultural programs for residents ranging from puppet shows and magic acts for children to a foreign film festival and performances by the Symphony of the Americas orchestra. Popular annual events within the community include the Hometown Fourth of July Celebration, Celebrate the Arts Day, and Weston World Fest. Is there anything else you would like to add? For me personally, it’s exciting to be back in sales in Weston, as I was part of the original 26 agent New Home Sales team with Arvida, the developer for the City of Weston. During the mid-90’s through 2001, Arvida sold nearly 1,400 newly-built homes per year. So, out of the nearly 20,000 home dwellings built in Weston since 1986, we are now selling the final eight home sites. This is truly a rare opportunity -especially to be able to choose your own builder and architectural design. Robert Coalla is a Broker-Sales Associate for Sovereign Real Estate Group. Cooper City Moms and Sons to Spend Quality Time Together BY DEBBY TEICH
O
n September 21, Cooper City moms and their sons will gather for the Mom & Son Night of Fun at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2002, this hometown event has been a way for moms and their sons (K–8th grade) to enjoy a special evening together, as they bond through a variety of fun activities and a bit of friendly competition. Many of them return year after year. The event will be held at 6:30pm at the Community Center. “This will be the first event held in the newly renovated Community Center,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “Not only will moms get an evening with their sons, but an opportunity to enjoy the facility first hand.”
The theme for this year’s event is “welcome to the jungle.” Moms and sons are encouraged to dress in the jungle theme. They will enjoy an action-packed evening filled with activities, prizes, dancing and dinner. If mom is not available, grand-moms, step-moms, and aunts are welcome to attend. The event is only for Cooper City residents (proof of residency is required when purchasing tickets). Seating is limited. The cost is $25 per couple and $12 per additional son. “Our events provide an outlet for our residents to bond with their family and spend quality time together in an entertaining atmosphere free of today’s technology distractions,” said Trainor. n

Cooper City Kids to Honor Their Grandparents BY DEBBY TEICH
C
ooper City grandchildren will have an opportunity to honor their grandparents at the Grandparents Day Celebration. It will be held on September 9, from 2pm to 4pm, at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center. Unfortunately, last year’s event was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma. Grandparents Day was established nationally in 1978 and Cooper City residents have been celebrating the holiday since 2007. It has become a tradition for many of the families. Either the grandchild (ages 4 and up) or the grandparent must be a Cooper City resident. The cost is $5 per person. “Grandparent’s Day is a holiday that gets overlooked by so many, but is so special,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “Grandparents are an instrumental part to many families and this event allows them to be recognized, as well as experience some well-deserved one-on-one time with their grandkids.” The afternoon will include an ice cream party, games, crafts, and lots of fun! Bring your bathing suits and enjoy the pool and game room after the event at no additional charge. 24 SEPTEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY DAVIE | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. On October 17, tickets go on sale for the Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, which will be held on November 17. Cooper City daughters will enjoy a memorable “date with dad” that includes an evening of dancing, dinner and fun. Some other events include Father Son Adventure in January and Mother Daughter Tea in May. All of the events are limited to Cooper City residents and require reservations.

Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club’s Exchange Student Returns to Denmark BY DEBBY TEICH
M
embers of the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club held a farewell meeting to say goodbye to their sponsored exchange student, 17-year-old Sara Walker, who recently returned to Denmark. During the meeting, Sara talked about some of the things she did and thanked Rotary for the opportunity. She handed out pins from Denmark, as well as homemade Danish cookies. The club presented her with her own personalized cold weather jacket that included her name and the Davie-Cooper City Rotary logo. “This year’s Rotary International Exchange
Student, Sara Walker, has really been a blessing to our Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club,” said Darrell Stuehrenberg, club director. Sara is from Soloed Strand, a small city located 27 kilometers from Copenhagen. After finishing high school in Denmark, she says she wanted to do something different from other students. “I wanted to improve my English, develop myself as a person and experience a new culture,” said Sara. Sara arrived in the United States in August of last year. She lived with two host families in Cooper City. She attended Cooper City High School, where she participated in the Interact Club and played several sports, including soccer, cross country and track. Throughout the year, Sara volunteered during several Rotary events, including a mini golf tournament, Christmas party for kids in need, Wild Horse Tales and much more. She visited several cities in Florida, as well as Arizona, Nevada and California. She also had an opportunity to show her
family around when they came to visit. They met Sara’s host families, toured Cooper City High School, attended a Rotary meeting, shopped, visited the Everglades and travelled to several cities. “I had the best year of my life here,” said Sara. “It was a once in a lifetime experience. Rotary is such an amazing organization. I love the Rotarians and all their events. I really think everyone should do an exchange year. It really makes you open more for a lot of things and other cultures.” Sara says the best part of the entire experience was the people she met. She made lots of new friends and many have promised to visit her in Denmark. For information, visit www.daviecoopercity.rotary-clubs.org.

On September 8, residents are invited to the 2nd Annual Bike Rodeo and Literacy Fair at the Sports Complex, from 9am to 11am. “It’s a great way for children to learn about bike safety in a fun, controlled atmosphere, as well as promote literacy,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the City of Cooper City Recreation Department. The event includes free helmet giveaways and fittings while supplies last, as well as the raffling of bicycles courtesy of Cycle Tech Center and MD Now. There will be various courses for children up to twelve years old with different levels of difficulty. Bike Rodeo participants 2017 event

must have their own bicycle, tricycle or big wheel and a helmet. Training wheels are permitted, but participants must be able to pedal on their own. Bike safety is also a key component of the event. There will be bike safety demonstrations, information pamphlets, and activity books for both parents and children. “Sixteen percent of trauma cases at Joe DiMaggio children’s hospital are due to injuries that occur on a bike,” said Vanessa Quiles MSN, RN, Clinical Specialist-Trauma Services Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator. “A lot of those injuries could have been prevented with the proper safety precautions. We want to make sure we equip our residents with all the knowledge needed to prevent injury and make bike riding not only fun, but safe.” Families can also participate in the Family Central Literacy Fair, a free event that features book

giveaways, music, entertainment, story time and face painting. “Family Central’s mission is to strengthen relationships and create nurturing communities where children and families flourish,” said Trainor. “Cooper City has a reputation of being Someplace special and we work hard to provide all the services we can to better our community through our special events. Promoting literacy and bike safety are both important to do at a young age, so we figured why not join forces and great one powerful event.” For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org.

hen planning a wedding or any other special event such a Bar/Bar Mitzvah, Sweet Sixteen, or Quinceañera, so many decisions must be made. It's only natural for most people to start asking many questions. They usually start out simple...
Which DJ/band keeps guests dancing all night long? Who is the "it" emcee? What venue can hold 200+ people? Does the photographer work well with children? More importantly, does the photographer know how to use Photoshop? Do people really eat duck pate? Are pigs in a blanket so 1980? How do I make sure my guests arrive on time? Which are more popular – roses or peonies? What liquor should I serve in the ice luge? Why do I need to know about lighting? How much is my budget? Do I really need one? 32 SEPTEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY DAVIE | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

One should also do their own research by reading testimonials, asking their own questions and listening to their trusted event planner if they have one. At the end of the day, it's your event and you should do what you are comfortable with. Besides verbal recognition and testimonials, look at their work. Does their style match yours? Are they going to "get you"? Watch videos, see photography samples, listen to the emcee/band and look at decor samples. Most importantly, meet them for yourself. When hiring, keep in mind that you are entering a relationship of sorts, so you want to like who you are hiring. "Personality over price" is usually the way to go. At some point in the planning process, you will be spending much time with these individuals. You should "click" with your photographer, "jive" with your emcee/band and of course, "love" your wedding planner. n If you are planning an event, have questions, or want more information on event planning please email editorhollywood@ ourcitymedia.com or call 954-732-5155.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
How to Improve Memory Recall for People with Dementia BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES or those diagnosed with dementia, memory loss can be difficult to face. Even in the beginning stages, losing memories can be frustrating and discouraging. At Artis Senior Living, we’re dedicated to helping people with dementia live the best they can every day. To do that, we encourage those with dementia or other forms of memory loss to participate in activities that challenge their brain and help improve memory. Here are a few memory reminders for dementia you can use with a loved one.
F
Exercise Staying active is key to maintaining physical health and is important for mental health, too. Studies have shown that exercise can improve memory and slow dementia in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment. Mild cognitive impairment often progresses to dementia. For those in the later stages of dementia, functional exercises can help people recall movements used to do everyday activities, such as getting dressed. Listen to Music Music has long been recognized as a reliable cue for bringing up memories. Just like how music works as an excellent mnemonic device in everyday life, music can be used to recall memories for people with dementia. Play a song familiar to your loved one and they just may light up, sing along, or even recall a memory related to the music. Look at Photos Similar to how music can jog the memory, visual cues can help people with dementia recall faces, places, or moments. Looking through photos is a great way to stir up fond memories of family, celebrations, and holidays gone by. Depending on the stage of dementia your loved one is in, it’s also the perfect opportunity to talk about what’s happening in the pictures. Don’t pressure a loved one if they can’t remember what’s taking place in the photos. If they do recall some details, take the time to write down some information on the back for your family to cherish forever. Make a Memory Box Memory boxes are popular in the world of dementia care for good reason. Filled with photos, keepsakes, and other mementos, memory boxes help spark conversation with your loved one, inspire memory recall, and bring up good times from the past. Because a memory box is filled with different types of items, it also encourages those with dementia to use a variety of senses, including, sight and touch, to experience the world around them. Smell Familiar Scents Smell is one of the strongest senses associated with memory. Roses may remind your loved one of a special garden they had growing up, or perhaps their wedding day. Smell can bring up pleasant memories, and it’s a sense that can be strengthened the more we use it. A better sense of smell can make food more enjoyable, promoting overall health.

During the hands-on event, the students had an opportunity to learn the value of giving back, as they spent the day volunteering. Headquartered in Davie, Firewall Centers is a nonprofit that helps improve performance outcomes among at-risk students as related to their school attendance, behavior, and course performance, thus help-
ing them to ultimately achieve self-sufficiency as they pursue their life goals. Serve-A-Thon is a countywide day of service where over 500 Firewall students, their mentors, and volunteers engaged in seven meaningful service projects throughout Broward County. “Serving is at the core of what we do,” said Andy Fernandez, Firewall Centers’ Executive Director. ‘‘When our students serve the elderly, feed the homeless, and give back to the community at large, they are living out what it means to be a servant leader.” During the Serve-A-Thon, Firewall students from Students from Indian Ridge Middle and Western Indian Ridge Middle joined with students from North High participated in Firewall’s Serve-A-Thon. ASK THE MAYOR
Davie Update BY MAYOR JUDY PAUL t is official! As of noon on June 23, I am again the Mayor of Davie. Since no one else qualified to run for the office, I automatically won the position. I will take my oath of office in November. What a humbling experience to be going into my fourth term as the Mayor of Davie. I want to thank all the residents and businesses that stood behind me, encouraged me and assisted me in making this dream a reality, once again. Special thanks go out to Davie Fire/Rescue and the Davie Police Departments for their endorsements and energetic support and contributions to my campaign. As you all know, Davie is my special place and is my passion. I love this town, where I raised my horses and have been riding the once unpaved roads and trails since 1974. I know it has changed a lot, but the core values of the equestrian lifestyle and open spaces will continue to be my priority, which is Davie’s pride and identity. I look forward to sharing new adventures over the next four years. As always, my door is open to you. Call me at 954-797-1030 and ask for an appointment. You don’t have to have a problem, just sharing good deeds and happy moments is cause enough for a visit. Starting in October, I will resume my coffee with the Mayor gatherings. Join me to share thoughts, ask questions or just to say hello. This will be on Mondays with the first and second weeks at 84 Diner and the third and fourth Mondays at Flashback Diner. I will remind you each month of the dates.

We are continuing our budget process. We had our second budget workshop on July 25 and we are on track with a balanced budget, which will include a slight millage increase to cover the additional School Resource Officers we put in place after February 14 in response to the tragedy at Stoneman Douglas High School. We will have one sworn Davie police officer in every elementary school, Nova and Indian Ridge Middle Schools as well as Nova High and McFatter Technical. There will be two officers at Western High. There will be no guardians in Davie schools. We still do not know what additional funding we will be getting from the school board, but we have requested additional monetary coverage for our 5 county schools located in our educational complex. Our elementary schools include: Hawkes Bluff, Flamingo, Fox Trail, Silver Ridge, Davie, Nova Blanche and Dwight Eisenhower. They will be in place on the first day of school. It is vital that you vote in the upcoming election. Don’t forget to check your voter status and request an absentee ballot. Since it will be a long ballot, that will give you time to research the candidates and constitutional amendments so you can make informed decisions. ASK THE SHERIFF
BSO Deputies Required to Carry Less Lethal Weapons BY SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL ecently, I instituted a new policy at the Broward Sheriff’s Office that requires all law enforcement deputies to carry at least one less-lethal weapon in addition to their firearm while on duty. Less-lethal weapons are explicitly designed and primarily employed to induce a subject to submit or comply with directions while minimizing fatalities, permanent injuries and unnecessary damage to property and the environment. In my nearly 40 years in law enforcement, I know firsthand that there is no one right response to any given situation. In many instances, deputies have only a matter of seconds - sometimes fractions of a second - to respond to a potentially life-threatening situation. It is up to each trained deputy on the street to assess any imminent threat rapidly and decide whether a firearm or less-lethal weapon is the most appropriate tool to use. That is why this new policy is so important. When your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. As a result of this new policy, deputies are afforded more options to de-escalate an incident while ensuring their safety, the safety of those around them and the safety of those individuals involved. In addition to their firearm, deputies now must carry at least one of the following: ▸▸ Impact Weapon (baton): These devices can be used in situations where there is an up-close encounter. ▸▸ Chemical Agent (pepper spray): This irritates the eyes and temporarily restricts vision. It can be used from a farther distance than impact weapons to incapacitate and gain compliance over the perpetrator. ▸▸ Conducted Electrical Weapons (commonly called “Taser”): This device provides an electrical discharge. It is more effective at a greater distance and, when effective, results in the total loss of control of voluntary muscles. I also approved a tool, a Less Lethal Launcher, which is issued to speciallytrained qualified deputies. Although it looks like a 12-gauge shotgun, it fires less-lethal bean bag-like projectiles designed to incapacitate an individual up to 50 yards away. The impact of one of these rounds can be compared to getting hit by a major league fastball in the upper thigh or lower abdomen. In addition, the menacing appearance and sound it produces often lead to quicker and greater compliance.

TWO LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU Not only are all deputies required to carry at least one less-lethal tool, but they also receive training and must demonstrate proficiency with that tool on a continuous basis. Although police use-of-force incidents resulting in death by firearm decreased nationally in recent years, they still regularly make headlines. The requirement to carry a less-lethal weapon is the right decision not only for our deputies, but for the individual involved in the incident - and without question, it’s good for our community. Most importantly, it will save lives. For information, visit sheriff.org.

n today’s hectic world, it is common to feel tired because we have so many responsibilities and our to-do lists just keep getting longer - consuming every single second of our existence. But if you’ve tried to address this problem by going to bed early and following an adequate diet to still wake up fatigued and drained, you may be suffering from a vitamin deficiency and specifically a vitamin B-12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is necessary for the body to produce red blood cells and DNA, along with supporting neurological function. It is obtained from animal sources such as poultry, eggs, meat and dairy products, including milk. Because of this, vegetarians and vegans are at high risk for developing a vitamin B12 deficiency and supplementation is important. Selecting foods that are fortified with Vitamin B is critical if you do not consume animal products, as vitamin B12 cannot be found in plants. Older adults are also at risk because they tend to consume less food overall, have limited diets and also have less stomach acid production, which prevents absorption. It must be noted, however, that supplementation alone may not solve the problem and you may need to get injections to treat a possible deficiency. The reason for this is that individuals may suffer from B12 deficiency due to malabsorption, and not because they are not consuming B12-rich foods. If you suffer from Crohn’s or celiac disease, you may be eating the right kinds of foods or taking in enough vitamins, but your body can’t absorb it. This is also the case in patients who have had part of their stomachs removed in weight loss surgery. In addition, some people lack intrinsic factor, a protein needed in order for the body to absorb B12 and it could be due to genetics or even autoimmune conditions. Some of the symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency include: ▸▸ Anemia ▸▸ Weakness ▸▸ Fatigue ▸▸ Numbness or tingling of hands/feet ▸▸ Memory loss ▸▸ Jaundice Because the signs of vitamin B12 deficiency can be confused with symptoms of other conditions, it is important that you work with a qualified practitioner to identify this problem. Severe vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to depression, paranoia, delusions and other serious effects. At Bellissimo Medical LLC ™, we work with patients to identify vitamin deficiencies and help optimize nutrition through our Nutritional IV Therapy program. A diagnosis is made after a comprehensive initial assessment, including specialized lab tests, physical exam and detailed health history. Because oral supplementation alone is insufficient in many cases, especially because of the body being unable to absorb B12, we work with patients to provide pharmacological (larger) doses of nutrients into the vein that would otherwise not be tolerated or be as effective, if administered orally. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Estate Planning for Blended Families

IDEN
BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
Y
ours, mine, and ours. Sadly, in America the average marriage lasts only seven years, with one out of two marriages ending in divorce. As over seventy-five percent of divorced individuals eventually choose to remarry, blended families now outnumber traditional nuclear families. And while this family dynamic has become the new normal, it’s a far cry from what was portrayed on the classic television series, “The Brady Bunch.” If you are part of a blended family, you face some unique estate planning challenges. These include providing for your current spouse if he or she survives you,,and making sure that when your spouse dies your children will be taken care of. Obviously, after the first spouse passes, the family dynamic can change dramatically; what the surviving spouse ends up doing with his or her assets can often be unpredictable. As we all know, blood is thicker than water. Let’s explore just a few possible estate planning options. Your spouse. A simple, albeit not wise, approach would be to leave everything to your spouse. As your spouse adores your children, you have no doubt that he/she will take care of your children after you are gone, right? Keep in mind that an unintended consequence of this approach might be totally disinheriting your own children! Consider this: After you are gone, if your spouse becomes incapacitated it is very likely that your spouse’s children will take over the financial affairs of the family. You don’t need a vivid imagination to see how that might turn into a disaster. What happens when your spouse dies? Or remarries? Without thoughtful planning, your assets may ultimately be inherited by your stepchildren, or even by the person who marries your spouse! Proper legal planning can avoid this potential pitfall. Your children. Another solution is to leave assets to your spouse and your children. Of course, this guarantees that your children will not be disinherited, but here too this path may lead to unintended consequences. Leaving assets outright to your children opens up a wide range of concerns, including the possibility that they may squander their inheritance by spending or investing unwisely, or lose most or all in a nasty divorce, an untimely lawsuit, or through bankruptcy. Even if your children are adults, shouldn’t you still protect them from future creditors and predators? Your ex-spouse. You probably don’t consider your ex, but your former spouse plays a role in your estate planning. Think about it. If you leave money to your minor children, it is likely that your ex-spouse will be appointed by the probate court to manage your children’s property. What happens if a child dies while single and childless? Who would inherit their assets? As the next-of-kin of your children, that individual can be your ex-wife or ex-husband! Planning effectively for a blended family requires creativity, experience and know-how. Consult with an estate planning professional to formulate a plan that is right for you and your family. Prenatal Oral Care and Your Child BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN hat does your personal oral care have to do with your newborn? More than you think. Unaware of its importance, many women avoid regular dental care during and immediately after pregnancy. In addition, uneducated dentists may not stress its importance and may even be less willing to provide certain services during pregnancy. This is very unfortunate for there are definite implications of poor oral health in pregnant women, their pregnancies, as well as their children. Multiple studies have shown links between periodontal disease (infection of the gums and bones supporting the teeth) and adverse outcomes in pregnancy including preterm deliveries, low birth weight babies, and preeclampsia. Children born to mothers with poor oral hygiene and high levels of certain oral bacteria have a significantly higher risk of developing cavities at an early age. This may be one of the causative factors in a child’s development of a condition called early childhood caries or ECC. ECC is a complicated situation in which cavities occur rampantly at an age in which needed care may be difficult to deliver. Fortunately, most of the causes of both cavities and ECC are preventable. Cavities are caused in large part by having high levels of certain oral bacteria. Although children are not born with these cavity causing bacteria, they are eventually transferred by caregivers to children. This can occur, for example, by blowing on a hot spoon of cereal. It is not natural, or possible, to forever eliminate these bacteria. However, the longer it takes to transfer, the decreased risk of cavities in general and ECC specifically. The way of accomplishing this would be to eliminate cavities in the mouths of mothers (and all caregivers for that matter) and reduce the amount of plaque through regular dental checkups, cleaning and application of topical fluoride (in toothpaste and rinse). It would be easiest to complete all dental work prior to pregnancy. However, it is important to keep in mind that most dental procedures can be accomplished during pregnancy. The safest and most comfortable time to accomplish dental work during pregnancy is the second trimester. We recommend using this time not only to receive services, but also to obtain tips for oral care for mother and baby. There are many special circumstances during pregnancy. For example, nausea and vomiting can create some difficulty in controlling the acid levels in the mouth, which can increase the risks of both enamel erosion as well as cavities in mother. You would be surprised at the creative strategies which can be used to overcome many of these challenges.

REAL ESTATE
Are Things Looking Up? BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR awrence Yun, NAR’s Chief Economist, paints a wonderful picture: the economy is solidly advancing. The anticipated growth rate of four to five percent in the second quarter is remarkable. For the year, the DGP will exceed 3% for the first time since 2005 (the start of the housing bubble). Employment, likewise is strong: five million net new jobs over the past two years, pushing the unemployment rate down to 3.8 percent, the lowest rate in 50 years. Wages are up, too, by 2.8% over the last 12 months. The stock market has been close to an all-time high, helping push combined wealth in the U.S. across the $100 trillion mark for the first time. The median home price has risen 40% over the last five years and continues to climb. And yet, home sales are down 1% from this time last year and homebuyer sentiment is tepid. My colleagues and I have discovered that in spite of all the great news touted by Dr. Yun, the housing market has seemed to turn sluggish over the summer. Here are some concerns. ▸▸ Home prices are escalating faster than salaries. Affordable housing is still too expensive and new homes are not being built at the much-needed rate. ▸▸ Mortgage rates are rising. Buyers may feel that they missed their greatest opportunity to purchase the home in which they can grow into – their buying power has been affected. ▸▸ Sellers not will to sell – that percentage has risen to 15%. Why should a Seller give up his 3.75% rate on his existing home to pay more money for a smaller home at a higher rate? ▸▸ Renters now feel squeezed out of the market; and with rising rental rates, renters are finding it difficult to save for a down payment. What are some solutions? According to Yun, communities need to push for: ▸▸ Accelerated new construction ▸▸ Streamlining the housing permit process ▸▸ Reduction of impact fees on new homes ▸▸ Promoting repurposing of outdated commercial structures and turning them into affordable housing units ▸▸ Educating and expanding vocational training in the construction field ▸▸ Increase in community lending for development. Is there any forecast of an economic slowdown? Will the housing market be affected? According to the Wall Street Journal: “The economic expansion that began in mid-2009 and already ranks as the secondlongest in American history will most likely will end in 2020, as the Federal Reserve raises interest rates to cool off an overheating economy, according to forecasters surveyed.” According to Mark J. Hulbert, Financial Analyst and Journalist: “Real Estate may be one of your best investments during the next bear market for stocks. And by Real Estate, I mean your home or other residential properties.” While we are enjoying a growing economy, your Real Estate investments may be one of the best safety nets regarding your family’s wealth. If you are ▸▸ A buyer on the fence of a near-future purchase or ▸▸ A Seller who wants to sell and eventually upsize or downsize or ▸▸ A perpetual tenant who is tired of the rental rut – -- NOW is the time. 2018 is three-quarters GONE. When will you move?

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Why Litigate When You Can Collaborate? BY EVAN BARON ften, I meet individuals who are more anxious about the prospect of litigation than they are about the ultimate dissolution of their marriage. This is likely a result of the public’s general perception that divorce proceedings are and always will be adversarial in nature. However, the State of Florida has experienced a paradigm shift. One in which families can address and resolve their divorce (or other family related matters, such as child support, timesharing modifications and Paternity actions), in a team setting which assembles for the sole purpose and goal of helping individuals separate without tearing their families apart. This paradigm shift is called the Collaborative Process. Contemplating divorce is very time-consuming and mentally taxing. The saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” The same, however, is untrue for individuals contemplating ending their marriage. The mental gymnastics required when considering all aspects and potential consequences of a divorce are physically and emotionally draining for anyone. This is especially true in cases involving children. Now, imagine that after careful deliberation, you make the difficult decision that divorce is the right choice for you and your family. However, with that choice, you are faced with the possibility that initiating a divorce will equate to “going to war” with your spouse or each spouse’s attorney going to war on their client’s behalf. This fear is often crippling and results in spouses delaying a divorce proceeding, even though all circumstances point to the divorce being necessary for the wellbeing of everyone involved, including children. Whether spouses decide to forgo a divorce should be based on the potential for reconciliation not because of a fear of the legal process embarked on when dissolving a marriage. Although adversarial litigation is a real possibility for some families, it does not have to be the reality for all families. The Collaborative Process affords families the opportunity to choose a more holistic approach to resolving their case. One that not only provides families with more control over every aspect of their case but also affords families peace of mind. The Collaborative Process is a non-adversarial alternative to obtaining a divorce, child support and timesharing modifications or establishments of paternity. It provides a team setting made up of professionals, including a mental health professional, a financial neutral as well as the attorney for each party. Rather than appear at hearings before a Judge, families take part in team meetings that create an effective environment conducive to resolving cases efficiently and at a lesser cost than traditional litigation. The Collaborative Law Process Act and Rules is Florida Law, having officially gone into effect back in July 1, 2017. The attorneys at Evan H. Baron & Associates are collaboratively trained and able to assist anyone interested in this option. If you or anyone you know is interested in the Collaborative Process and would like more information on how to get started, please contact our office.
