want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. A Bountiful Harvest

he month of October often conjures up images of harvests, autumn and falling leaves. Watching leaves turn red and fall is less of a common occurrence here than for our friends up north. Agriculture is, however, still an important part of Broward County and South Florida. According to the USDA’s 2012 Census of Agriculture, there were almost 15 thousand acres of land being used for farming in Broward County. This farmland generates about $50 million a year in livestock and crop sales. These figures do not include the well-established horse economy in Plantation, Davie and Southwest Ranches. While most of Broward County is built out with neighborhoods, city parks and commercial developments, there are still over 600 farms producing everything from bell peppers to beef. These farms preserve a past where much of West Broward was composed of ranches and orange groves. There are a number of farms and nurseries where residents can buy locally grown produce. City of Cooper City to Hold Garage Sale and Book Swap BY DEBBY TEICH

s the holidays approach, many are looking for gift items, both new and used. This month, the City of Cooper City will offer two great ways to find them at the Garage Sale and Book Swap. Garage Sale Whether you are selling or buying, this is the place to be for deals galore. Anywhere from 500 people to a few thousand are expected to attend the Garage Sale, which will be held on October 6, from 7am to noon in the parking lot of the Cooper City Sports Complex at Stirling Road at 100th Avenue.

“With 63 vendors, this Garage Sale is your one stop shop,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “There are great deals and lots of options to choose from.” Sixty-three vendors will be selling a variety of household items, including clothing, toys and exercise equipment. The cost for a spot the size of a full parking space is $25. One parking space allowed per household. Registration begins September 5, at 6:30pm, at the Pool and Tennis Center and closes once all the spots are filled. No professional vendors. Vendors must be Cooper City residents. Proof of residency is required. Book Swap From October 5 to 11, drop off your slightly used books in good condition to the Community Center. A ticket will be issued for each donated

It is the area’s leading provider of college entrance test preparation tutoring. Founder and Owner Michael Eldeiry, and Director of Academics Adam Moss, answered some commonly asked questions about Broward Tutorial Services’ programs and success strategies. What is Broward Tutorial Services? We are Broward County’s premier test prep company for the ACT, SAT and PSAT. We work with students at all levels to help them reach their highest potential. We offer exceptional small group and private one-on-one tutoring as well as one-day workshops to help students prepare for these critical exams. In addition, we offer subject tutoring primarily for high school students. What are the SAT and ACT and why are they so important? The SAT and ACT are standardized tests required for entrance to most competitive colleges and universities. They are commonly taken by students in their junior and senior years of high school. Both tests are accepted equally by all institutions. How does a student know which test to take? The best way to really know which test is right is to have the student take a diagnostic test, which combines half of each test and provides both a baseline score for each and a comparison of which test is better for the student. The SAT is a shorter, less time constrained test with harder reading and more algebra, while the ACT has a stricter time limit and a

science section devoted to reading charts and graphs, which can intimidate some students. Another good way to determine which test is better for a student is to have them take each test. What is the timeline to prepare for the exams? We like our students to begin as early as possible in their junior year, and many students start during the summer between their sophomore and junior year. Most students have to take the tests a few times to achieve their maximum score, so waiting until the end of junior year or senior year is not a great idea. We encourage students to start with the diagnostic test to see which test is better for them, and then begin with a group class. In the end, every student is different. Lisa Cohen, our Office Manager and Higher Education Advisor, talks to parents and students to personalize a plan for

each student. What do students learn from your program? Students learn all the strategies for how to excel on the standardized test they are taking. We also review the material on which they are being tested. Standardized tests cover most of high school math, so students often need to review some things they haven’t seen since middle school. Students also need to learn how to approach these tests, as they are very different from the tests they are used to in school. What kinds of results can students expect after completing the program? That depends on several factors, most of all on how much work the student puts in to practicing the techniques we teach them. It’s not unusual for students who work hard in our class to improve between 200 and 500 points on the SAT and from three to eight points on the ACT. What are the benefits to test preparation? Higher SAT and ACT scores are the second most important factor (behind grades) for admission into college. High scores may also result in both private and school-sponsored scholarship money, including Florida Bright Futures, and placement into higher classes once at college. What distinguishes Broward Tutorial Services from other test prep programs? Davie Fire Rescue Experiences A Baby Boom BY DEBBY TEICH

hen 12 babies were born to Davie firefighters and their families over a one-year period, many joked that there must be something in the water. The proud parents posed for a photoshoot with their infants and the photo went viral. “For a department our size to have this many births within a short time span was remarkable,” said Jorge Gonzalez, Assistant Fire Chief. “We’re all still amazed that all of the babies stayed so photogenic for the entire time. It took a lot of behind the lens action on the part of the parents and Battalion Chief Moran while photos were being taken. We were all so surprised to see the pictures get shared all over the country.” Many of the young babies enjoy play dates together and socialize during the Fire Benevolent Picnic and other family events hosted by the fire department. It is an opportunity to share child rearing tips, such as how to coordinate between their firefighter schedules, spouses’ work schedules and children’s sleeping schedules. Most importantly, they remind each other to make time for their kids. “We’re all going through the same issues together,” said Firefighter Chad Rynning. “It is great that we

are able to talk to each other and watch our kids grow up together.” There were 11 boys and only one girl. Eight of the 12 babies were the first born. n October 12, six graduates of Broward County Public Schools who are community luminaries and champions in education will be inducted into Broward Education Foundation’s Hall of Fame during the Publix Super Markets Charities 2018 “Hall of Fame Breakfast” presented by Memorial Healthcare System. Two of them - Jeffrey R. Dion and Michael J. Ramirez – are graduates of Davie high schools. Both will receive a BrightStar Credit Union “Walk of Fame” Alumni star. “Each year it is our privilege to recognize some of the most exemplary, accomplished and distinguished graduates of Broward County Public Schools,” said Shea Ciriago, executive director of Broward Education Foundation. “We take great pride in welcoming these inspiring leaders into the Hall of Fame class of 2018. ver 2,000 people of all ages recently attended Eat to the Beat at Cooper City Sports Complex. There was live music, as well as food trucks – creating the perfect environment for a fun family evening in Cooper City. “It’s a family fun concert with great food, and even better company,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “It’s a great way to bond with your neighbors and enjoy Someplace Special.” Mr. Nice Guy performed in the City’s new show mobile. The event included bounce houses, obstacle courses, beer and wine. The Girl Scouts hosted games for children. Some of the food trucks were: Che Grill, Cold Stone, Cucina Bambina, Gene’s Joint, Granny B’z, Ipeks, Los Chamos, Miami Grilled Cheese, Miami Pizza Truck and more.

Barbie Comes Alive at the Old Davie School Historical Museum DEBBY TEICH

or nearly 60 years, Barbie has been a cultural icon. She has evolved with the times and kept up with the latest trends, and is still as popular as ever. Twenty-eight adult, teen and tween Barbie models recently gathered at the Old Davie School Historical Museum for the 8th Annual Tea with Barbie at Old Davie School Historical Museum, which just celebrated its 100th birthday. Attendees included Graduation Barbie, Secret Service Ken, Surfer Barbie, Pajama Party Barbie, Bride and Groom Barbie, and many others. This year, Birthday Barbie also showed up to celebrate Old Davie School turning 100 years old. The event sold out quickly, as it does every year. “Barbie celebrated Old Davie School turning 100 years old this year,” said Leslie Schroeder, Executive Director. “She looks great for 59 and so does Old Davie School at 100! Its community spirit and educational programs continue to attract

visitors of all ages.” The theme for this year’s tea was “Old Davie School’s 100th Birthday Party.” The tables were set with fine linens, china and Barbie centerpieces, as guests enjoyed tea, finger sandwiches, and sweet delights. The event included a Barbie fashion show, opportunities for photos, coloring, raffle prizes and more. Live Barbie dolls modeled the latest Barbie fashions, posed for photos and signed autographs. Many young girls came dressed in their finest dresses, shoes and tiaras. They even brought their Barbie dolls along to participate in the festivities. Over 25 Barbie dolls were raffled off. Thanks to a donation by board member Michael Crowley, one lucky participant went home with a Barbie Dream House. “Barbie is a role model for all girls, showing you can be what you want to be in life,” said Schroeder. “It’s a wonderful way to spend quality time with your favorite girl, especially if she is a fan of Barbie.”

Pick a Pumpkin This time of year, pumpkin patches are popping up on practically every corner. While they’re great photo ops for taking adorable pictures of the kids, these pumpkin patches are also the perfect place to find your future jack-o’-lantern. You can roam the rows of these giant, bright orange squash, searching for that perfect specimen. So, how do you decide which of the literally thousands of pumpkins to pick? According to thekitchn.com, there are six simple steps to picking the perfect pumpkin. ▸▸ Pick it up and tap it: It should feel sturdy. When you tap it, you should hear a hollow sound. ▸▸ Check the coloring: Choose one that has consistent coloring throughout. ▸▸ Look for bad spots: Try to choose a pumpkin without any scratches, bruises, or dark spots. ▸▸ Apply pressure: Flip the pumpkin upside down and apply pressure with your thumbs. If it’s not completely sturdy, the pumpkin isn’t fresh and will rot quickly. ▸▸ Set it down: Make sure it sits flat, unless you want your jack-o’lantern to sit a little crooked.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Western High School Hosts Remembrance Ceremony BY DEBBY TEICH

ast month, students at Western High School in Davie gathered for the 17th annual Remembrance Ceremony to commemorate America’s fallen heroes and to remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Although most of the school’s students are aware of the events of September 11th, the majority were not even born at the time. The memorial service gives them a chance to talk about this tragedy. Since 2002, a student constructed memorial has served as a symbol for Western High students to host the “We Will Never Forget” ceremony. The student constructed monument replicates the Twin Towers, surrounded by the Pentagon, with a flagpole placed in the outline of the state of Pennsylvania. This year, a plaque was dedicated to the 37 Officers of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey who died in the line of duty on September 11, 2001. The audience included members of the local fire departments and law enforcement, as well as Western High School’s JROTC, choral singers, band and Student Government Association. Western High School Students Win 1st Place in Solar Car Race BY DEBBY TEICH

tudents on the Solar Cat team at Western High School are leaning how to apply physics and mechanics to build an optimal vehicle that can run solely on sunlight. This summer, 13 students represented their school and the state of Florida in a cross-country solar car race from Fort Worth, Texas to Palmdale, California race and won first place in the Classic Division. They raced in the SolarCat V2, which students completed in 2016. Last year, they spent countless hours after school and on weekends to optimize its efficiency. They made it more aerodynamic; enhanced the solar panel array; and reduced overall weight and friction. The race lasted a total of 10 days. For the first three days, judges examined the car’s the mechani-

cal layout, electrical systems, safety procedures and more to make sure it was qualified to participate. The rest of the days were dedicated to racing. The students woke up by 5am each day to prepare for an eight-hour day of racing. “This race was something we will never forget,” said Gabriela Lopez, team member. “Being able to part take in this experience as a high school student is invaluable. It was definitely hard work, but it was more than worth it. We would have not been able to achieve greatness if it wasn’t for all the help and support we received from parents, teachers, school administrators, mentors, our community and everyone that donated and gave us their support.” Lopez believes that the time they spent testing and fixing the car prior to the race helped them win first place. This year, they also had team member, Antonio Garrido, and parent, John Ayala Sr., dedicated to navigating throughout the race. This prevented them from getting lost and allowed them to function better as a team. The Solar Cats won the Lockheed Martin “Excellence in Engineering” Award. In addition, Fernando De

Achurra won the Order of the Solar Cell, which is presented to those extremely special people who believe in high school solar car racing, and the great students who make it happen. The team will not be participating in the 2019 race, which will be a circuit race. Instead it will spend two years building a new car to use for the Electric-Solar Division 2020 Cross Country race. They will still perform maintenance on the current car and continue to display it at public events and fundraisers.

BY MAYOR JUDY PAUL s of September 1, 2018, the Town of Davie Fire Rescue Department will be classified as a Class 1 Public Protection Classification (PPC) Rating agency. The Class 1 rating is the highest possible score that can be given to any fire department nationwide. Throughout the United States, there are only 329 departments that are a class 1 and only 32 in Florida. There are over 47,000 fire departments in the country. “This rating reflects the hard work and dedication of all Davie Fire Rescue personnel and our commitment to save lives and property,” said Fire Rescue Chief Julie Downey. How the department was rated: ▸▸ Fire Department – 50% is derived from fire operational capacity, including the number and locations of fire stations and how the department maintains and tests its engine and ladder companies. ▸▸ Water supply – 40% is based on availability of enough water to fight a fire, focusing on whether the community has sufficient water supply for fire suppression beyond daily maximum consumption, as well as the number and location of fire hydrants and how often hydrants are inspected and tested. ▸▸ Emergency communications systems – 10% of the score is from the level of communication with the public, such as how well the fire department receives and dispatches fire alarms, including the level of technology and number of personnel in the emergency call center. ▸▸ Community risk reduction - The calculation takes into consideration community risk reduction efforts, such as fire prevention, public fire safety education and fire investigation.

Strengthening Security in Our Schools BY SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL eporting suspicious activity or perceived threats at our schools just got a whole lot easier. The Broward Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with SaferWatch, recently launched an innovative new mobile app that allows users to report non-emergency incidents and tips in real time directly to BSO. The SaferWatch program covers more than 440 public, charter and private schools in Broward and gives students, parents and teachers the ability to submit photos, videos, audio files or text messages anonymously. Whether it’s a case of bullying, overhearing something of concern or witnessing an incident that gives you pause, the app provides a user an easy way to report important tips and information that may have in the past gone unreported. The information is then sent to BSO Criminal Investigations who will review the information and swiftly take the appropriate action. The more eyes and ears we have in the community, the safer we all become. So, if you see something, send something through SaferWatch. Another great feature about SaferWatch is the ability to alert users of an incident or event at any geo-fenced school in Broward County. For instance, if there is an incident at a school, all users of the app at the school and those who have chosen that school for which to receive alerts will be sent a notification through the app in real time. SaferWatch is a remarkable new tool, but it is just one of many ways BSO is working to strengthen school security. This year, BSO is ensuring that an armed school resource officer, deputy or guardian will be on every public and charter school campus in all BSO-patrolled cities, from the open of school to the close of school. Larger schools have more than one deputy to provide for additional coverage. BSO also provides added armed security on every public and charter school campus in BSO-patrolled cities during the beginning and end of each school day, when the most people are coming and going from campuses. In addition, we are also working closely with Broward County Public Schools to assist with the hiring, equipping and training of their armed school guardians for schools in all Broward County districts. We also know that ongoing training and preparation are vital in every profession—especially law enforcement. To that end, we have provided enhanced tactical training to all BSO school resource officers in the area of active shooter; initiated additional active shooter training for all sworn BSO personnel; and trained and equipped all school resource officers with smaller concealable long gun firearms to ensure they have immediate access in the event of an active shooter incident. BSO is making heavy, but prudent use of the Risk Protection Order Act (RPO), or red flag law, which passed earlier this year. The law is a valuable tool to prevent gun violence by helping keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who demonstrate an obvious threat to themselves or others. Already, BSO has utilized RPOs dozens of times—more than any other county in the state. We are working on the formation of a dedicated threat assessment division which will serve as a clearinghouse for all information related to individuals who potentially pose a threat to our schools and the communities we serve. These enhancements are just some of the ways BSO is working to help keep our schools and our children as safe as possible.

In doing so, many times we look at patients’ lifestyles, including nutritional choices as a first step in treating and of course, preventing health conditions. But knowing where your food comes from and what ingredients are in it is as important as making healthy choices. Unfortunately, we cannot trust the Food Industry to supply clean foods even when it comes to fruit and vegetables. In today’s society, it seems like everything has been either genetically modified or exposed to substances that can be detrimental to our health, for example, pesticides. A study by The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a research and advocacy group, found traces of an herbicide in popular breakfast foods, such as Cheerios and Quaker Oats. Glyphosate is a controversial substance as it has been linked to cancer; it is also a widely available and popularly known as Roundup, a weed killer. Monsanto, the company behind Roundup, was recently ordered to pay $289 million in damages to a cancer patient who claimed this substance caused the disease. Although Monsanto claims glyphosate is safe, in 2015 the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer declared it a possible carcinogen. However, other studies have shown no association between glyphosate and cancer. Based on their research, EWG has put together a Top 12 list of produce items that have been found to contain pesticide residue: ▸▸ Strawberries ▸▸ Cherries ▸▸ Spinach ▸▸ Pears ▸▸ Nectarines ▸▸ Tomatoes ▸▸ Apples ▸▸ Celery ▸▸ Grapes ▸▸ Potatoes ▸▸ Peaches ▸▸ Sweet bell peppers These results are not only alarming, but scary. What makes this matter worse is the ambiguous and inconclusive research about the effects of glyphosate. The one thing that is certain is that people should not be consuming food with traces of pesticide. What are you to do as a consumer? The best thing is to educate yourself and have awareness of this situation so you can make appropriate decisions. One idea would be to grow your own food to ensure it is free from chemicals, but because this may be difficult and unrealistic for many people. Buying organic products is one way you can cut your exposure to these pesticides. Organic food has been found to contain less pesticide. At Bellissimo Medical LLC, we recommend our patients soak fruits and vegetables in water with 1-2 drops of dish detergent, preferably the clear Dawn Dish Detergent. This will allow the grease-cutting chemicals known as surfactants to remove these chemicals and their residue on the food items and cleans them really well—this is why detergent is used to cleanse animals covered with oil. After submerging for 2-3 hours you can rinse your produce with tap water and consume. If you are used to reaching for the “triple washed” and “ready-to-eat” produce items in hopes of saving some time in the kitchen, it may be time to reconsider and invest more time making sure your food is as clean as possible. BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN ou are accompanying your child for their regularly scheduled visit to the dentist and you hear those dreaded words “your child has a cavity.” Initial emotions usually consist of anger. You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird and Monsters Inc.). The toothpaste is bubble gum flavored. There are three hundred dinosaur floss handles in the drawer, a water irrigation system, and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care. After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So, what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then it dawns on you. It is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth, aka “baby” teeth, have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion, chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance. The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and in most cases save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just as important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits which will reward them into their adulthood. Some of them include: ▸▸ It is a desirable place to live because of weather, water and related activities. ▸▸ It has no state income tax. ▸▸ Homeowners can claim homestead exemption. ▸▸ Employment levels are high. ▸▸ The economy is growing. ▸▸ Housing prices are growing. According to local studies, Miami was 65.4 percent above its long-term pricing trend, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach topped out at 63.4 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively. ▸▸ It maintains a strong demand for housing due to low inventories and our robust economy. ▸▸ It is still experiencing a Seller’s market in most areas To add to that, interest rates are slowly rising. According to the experts, who admit the housing market is difficult to predict, short of a catastrophe, there will not be a downfall of pricing; however, there may be a slowdown of rising prices. According to KCM, some attempt to compare the current housing market to the market leading up to the “boom, bubble and bust” that we experienced a decade ago. They connect price appreciation to that era and conclude that we are on a similar trajectory, speeding toward another housing crisis. KCM goes on to explain, “however, there is a major difference between the two markets. Last decade, while demand was being artificially created by extremely loose lending standards, a tremendous amount of inventory was coming to the market to satisfy that demand.” A normal or balanced market should have approximately six months’ supply of inventory. The Difficult Issue of Relocation BY EVAN BARON nyone involved in family law, whether it be an attorney, mediator or even a judge, will agree that relocation cases are often the most difficult and challenging. Let me first explain the concept of relocation. A relocation occurs when one parent is seeking permission to relocate with a minor child more than 50 miles from their home. This generally occurs post judgment, meaning after the parties have already been divorced; although it could be an element that is addressed during the dissolution itself. It is not the parent’s relocation that becomes an issue, but rather the minor child’s. Several years ago, the Florida Legislature passed a relocation statute, which dictates how these matters must proceed. A parent who was or is married to the other parent (paternity cases are not always the same) must receive either written permission from the other parent or a court order allowing the relocation to occur. Assuming there is no agreement between the parents, Florida Statutes require the “relocating parent” to file a Petition to Relocate. If a time-sharing schedule has already been established by the court, a request to modify the time-sharing schedule must also be included. The Petition must be served upon the other parent, who will have twenty days to respond. The petition must include the following language: “A RESPONSE TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION OBJECTING TO RELOCATION MUST BE MADE IN WRITING, FILED WITH THE COURT, AND SERVED ON THE PARENT OR OTHER PERSON SEEKING TO RELOCATE WITHIN 20 DAYS AFTER SERVICE OF THIS SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION TO RELOCATE. IF YOU FAIL TO TIMELY OBJECT TO THE RELOCATION, THE RELOCATION WILL BE ALLOWED, UNLESS IT IS NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILD, WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE AND WITHOUT A HEARING.” The Petition must include the following: ▸▸ A description of the location of the intended new residence, including the state, city and specific address if known ▸▸ The home telephone number of the intended new residence ▸▸ The date of the intended move ▸▸ A detailed statement of the specific reasons for the proposed relocation. If it is based upon a job offer which has been reduced to writing, it must be attached. ▸▸ A proposal for the modified time-sharing schedule. In deciding whether to grant the relocation, the Court must consider: ▸▸ The relationship between the minor child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The age and developmental stage of the child and the likely impact a relocation will have on that child ▸▸ The feasibility of preserving the relationship between the child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The child’s preference, taking into consideration the age and maturity of the child ▸▸ Whether the relocation will enhance the general quality of life for the child and the parent seeking relocation ▸▸ The reasons the nonrelocating parent is in fact objecting ▸▸ The current economic and employment circumstances of each parent ▸▸ Whether the relocation is being sought in good faith ▸▸ Any other factor affecting the best interests of the child As you can see, this is a complicated issue. It would be best for both parties to seek legal counsel before considering such a move.
