From Samhain to All Hallows Eve to Halloween
October 26th 9am-1pm
D
o you celebrate the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain? If you or your kids are dressing up to go trick-or-treating this month you just might. Believe it or not, Halloween dates back about 2,000 years to the area that is now Ireland and the British Islands. The Celts, who inhabited those islands at the time, celebrated their new year on November 1st. The day marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter. For the Celts, winter was a period of struggle and often death. They believed that on that night the barrier between the living and the dead would open and the ghosts of the dead would return. The Celts burned huge bonfires and wore costumes consisting of animal skins and even heads. Their priests, called Druids, would attempt to contact the spirits and tell people’s fortunes. After the Romans conquered the British Isles, the celebration was combined with a Roman festival that commemorates the passing of the dead, called Feralia. About 600 years later Christianity had spread throughout Europe and Pope Boniface IV established the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day, which was later changed to All Soul’s Day, in honor of the dead. It was celebrated on the same day and using the same customs as Samhain. The Middle English term “All Hallows” which translates to “All Souls” evolved somewhere along the way to the word Halloween. Much has changed over the last 2,000 years. Today, Halloween is a festive time focused more on children’s enjoyment. No longer do adults wear macabre costumes made of animal skins. Rather, the holiday today features excited children dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters and superheroes merrily going from house to house collecting bags full of candy. How ever you choose to celebrate Halloween, make sure it’s fun and safe.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 10/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Bianca – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Annie or Bianca for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. Children Are In For A Special Halloween Treat In Cooper City BY STACEY BOMSER

T
he Halloween festivities start early in Cooper City with the annual Trick or Treat Shop to Shop on October 26th. Children are encouraged to come dressed in their Halloween costumes to participate in a costume contest and trick or treat to Countryside Shops merchants. “We host this event annually to provide a safe environment for families to go trick or treating with the kids and to help connect residents with local businesses to help strengthen communal ties,” explains Cooper City Recreation Program Specialist Brandon Zickar. “We host the event in a different shopping center every year to get different businesses involved and to help create relationships between the businesses and the residents they serve.” Zickar says about 100 to 150 children typically take part in the festivities, which include a costume contest and trick or treating to collect candy and treats from participating stores. The costume contest consists of different age categories, from infants (one
and under) through middle school. Trophies are awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each age category. Zickar says some of the winning costumes from previous years included Mr. Clean, Richard Branson, a SWAT Team member, a unicorn, various Disney princesses, a dinosaur and a robot. He encourages children to be creative. To participate, children must arrive ten minutes before their scheduled contest time; age groups compete approximately every ten minutes from 10:10am to 11:45am. Children must be accompanied by an adult to receive their entry number. In addition to the costume contest, Trick or Treat Shop to Shop will feature Halloween-themed games and activities, including a family-friendly haunted house. Zickar says providing wholesome family activities is a priority for the City’s Recreation Department. “It is important because it brings our residents together and helps keep the sense of community strong in Cooper City. Our familyfriendly activities and events are hubs where our residents can meet, connect and communicate with one another in a safe environment.” Trick or Treat Shop to Shop is a free event taking place on Saturday, October 26th, from 10am12pm at the Countryside Shops located at 5524 Flamingo Road. Bahamas Support Flows from Broward County But Much More is Needed BY TERRY JAILLET
S
outh Florida lucked out. As Hurricane Dorian lumbered toward us, local residents put up storm shutters, boarded up windows and purchased supplies. We cautiously watched digital tracking maps and made plans for possible evacuations. We were reminded, yet again, how important a Hurricane Kit is for families living in the tropics. Fortunately for us, the storm stayed east. Our neighbors in the Bahamas, of course, were not as fortunate. Hurricane Dorian will likely be remembered as the worst natural disaster in the Bahamas’ history. As of late September, there were still more than 1,000 people missing. The islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco still lacked basic infrastructure. And, thousand of residents remained displaced or living in shelters. The South Florida Bahamanian community, local charitable organizations and local business stepped into action immediately
following the storm. In fact, even before the storm left the islands, South Floridians were organizing supplies, raising funds and dreaming up logistics plans. Several small armadas of sail boats, yachts and ferries brought urgent supplies immediately after the storm. Bahamas Consul General Lind Mackey thanked the community but noted, “we are in urgent need of help. As a people, we are hoping to get past the

next few weeks.” It is believed that almost half the homes on grand Bahamas have been destroyed or severely damaged and more than 60,000 islanders are still in need of basic necessities like food and drinking water. Aid organizations have stepped in to provide longterm assistance as the islands begin to rebuild. You can help by: ▸▸ Donating to the United Nation’s relief organization, UNICEF. Visit www.donate. unicefusa.org to help. ▸▸ Donate to the Bahamas Dorian Relief Fund at www.bahamas.gov.bs ▸▸ Donate blood to the Red Cross ▸▸ Visit Charity Navigator at www.charitynavigator.org to find highly rated charitable organizations Another way to support the Bahamas is to visit soon. Tourism accounts for as much as 60% of Bahamanian GDP and about half of the jobs. As strange as it sounds, perhaps the best way to help our friends off the coast, is to pay them a visit soon.

Cold and Flu Season: Facts to Help You Through It As the weather cools during winter months, sniffles and coughs from colds and flu often rise. On average, adults get 2 or 3 colds a year. Between 5 and 20 percent of the general population comes down with influenza (the flu), according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “When you are looking at flu virus droplets that are so small — that spreading the virus by breathing in close proximity would be logical,” says Sergio Segarra, M.D., chief medical officer at Baptist Hospital of Miami and an emergency physician. “That, in addition to the virus living up to 24 hours on surfaces, makes it that much worse.” Besides getting your flu shot, doctors recommend the following steps to staying healthy during the cold/flu season: 1. Get adequate sleep. 2. Keep stress at bay. 3. Drink plenty of liquids, hot and cold. The peak of flu season often hits in February and March. Overall, the season typically starts in October and can last through May. The flu shot remains the best way to prevent getting the flu, doctors and public health officials say. They also say to be aware of where germs can be around you and wash your hands often. “Both the cold and the flu are caused by viruses, but each has different symptoms, duration and treatments,” says Deepa Sharma, D.O., a family medicine physician with Baptist Health Primary Care. Flu symptoms often include fever, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headaches. In children, vomiting and diarrhea are more common. Individuals who are at high risk for flu-related complications include 26 OCTOBER 2019 | OUR CITY DAVIE | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease or lung disease, and people ages 65 and older. “The viruses that cause the flu are hard to predict, so we won’t always know what time of year they will become prevalent, or if there’s a particular region that experiences more cases,” Dr. Sharma adds. The flu virus spreads primarily by droplets formed when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. But a study last year found that coughs and sneezes may not be necessary to fill the air with droplets of the flu virus. The study, funded by the CDC and the National Institutes of Health, suggested that the flu virus can spread more easily than previously thought.
4. Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing. 5. Try not to touch your face, nose or mouth, especially during cold and flu season. 6. Be aware of where germs can be around you and wash your hands often. 7. Clean your screen! Keep cell phones, tablets and other frequently used electronic devices free of germs. If you find yourself sick with the flu, please visit one of Baptist Health’s neighborhood Urgent Care locations, or meet with a doctor online through the Baptist Health Care On Demand App.

Children’s Harbor Hosts Back to School Splash for Children in Foster Care BY JON DUKA
A
rea Foster kids enjoyed one last summer splash to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of the new school year. The children enjoyed splashing down a large water slide, playing water games and feasting on scrumptious barbecue. The event took place on the eight-acre campus of nonprofit agency Children’s Harbor. Children’s Harbor’s aims to provide a safe harbor for and to support at-risk children, youth, and families. The Back to School Splash was held in partnership with the Girl Scouts. “Children in foster care have worries that most students don’t, making a new school year more difficult for them,” said Tiffani Dhooge, Children’s Harbor CEO. “Our goal is to help these children succeed and truly enjoy and embrace this time
of year. The Back to School Bash was one last celebration of summer and a fun way to kick-off the new school year.” A Key aspect of the approach at Children’s Harbor is their focus on keeping siblings together. Seperation from parents can be extraordinarily stressful for kids. Ensuring they are kept together with a brother or sister can make a huge difference in the outcome for a Foster Child. The Center also provided backpacks to more than 150 students, thanks to generous donations from community members. Providing school supplies to atrisk children provides a double benefit. It ensures the students are prepared on the first day of school and it helps them feel like they are no different from other students at their schools. Established in 1996, Children’s Harbor is a nationally accredited nonprofit agency with a mission to provide a safe harbor and support to at risk children, youth, and families-keeping brothers and sisters together, strengthening families, and rebuilding lives.

Many of our high school students are involved in university level research projects and work directly with NSU professors throughout the campus. We also have tremendous internship opportunities for our students.
What are the advantages of being part of a college campus? NSU University School is located on a 28-acre campus in the heart of Nova Southeastern University, affording students a safe and secure environment within a thriving scholarly community. Furthermore, our personalization, qualified and passionate educators, and connection to the university enables students to reach their potential and gain a strategic advantage. Within a rigorous and supportive environment, students achieve success in academics, athletics and the arts, and contribute to their community and various service organizations.

This is my fourth year as Head of School at NSU University School, after serving five years as Upper School Director. Before coming to NSU University School, I was principal at Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York. Northern Arizona University. I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, where I was a member of four Big Ten Championship swim teams. In addition, I was an individual Big Ten Champion and a Big Ten Scholar Athlete. Speaking of sports, what types of extracurricular activities does NSU University School offer? We offer abundant opportunities for students including athletics at all levels, visual and performing arts programs, as well as a multitude of clubs. They must really care. In today’s fast-paced world, it seems like everyone’s attention is in short supply. A great real estate agent will show you that’s not always the case, by listening and caring about you and your needs. Not only will being a good listener help an agent do her job, but it’ll also show you that even in business, there are still people out there who care. They can save you a lot of money. There’s an old expression, “If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.” Hiring a great agent can save you literally thousands of dollars, as the right agent will not only negotiate effectively, but also know what pitfalls to look for as the transaction moves along, saving you money in the process. They can help you see things from another angle. A great agent can take what you asked for and find something that’s even better than anything you’ve ever considered. A great agent is like an expert matchmaker. They do more than help you buy or sell a home. They’ll help you find contractors, give recommendations on design, and help you navigate the restaurants in your new neighborhood. They want to be your go-to resource for anything to do with real estate. They will find you something no one else can. They will surprise you with something no one’s ever thought of before, whether it’s finding a property that you didn’t know about, or a solution to an otherwise complex problem. A great agent is proactive. They really take your stresses away. The peace of mind that comes from working with someone who will not only anticipate issues ahead of time but will shoulder the burden and solve problems for you, making it a low-stress experience. They will go to battle for you when and where it counts. The right agent is like a general you can depend on when the going gets tough. From searching for the right property or buyer, to negotiating, to pushing the deal through despite all obstacles standing in the way… a great real estate agent won’t back down from adversity and will battle for your best interests at all times. They desire to become friends for life. Real estate is much more about relationships than it is about individual transactions. They have this infectious personality that you always want to be around. Consider forming a lifelong friendship with your real estate agent. It could truly change your life. Zona Horton has been successfully selling Real Estate in South Florida for over 30 years. She works for the international Keller Williams family of companies and serves Davie, Cooper City and surrounding cities. Call her for all your Real Estate needs. ASK THE EXPERT
Just a Baby Tooth BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN ou are accompanying your child for their regularly scheduled visit to the dentist and you hear those dreaded words “your child has a cavity.” Initial emotions usually consist of anger. You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird and Monsters Inc.). The toothpaste is bubble gum flavored. There are three hundred dinosaur floss handles in the drawer, a water irrigation system, and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care. After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So, what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then it dawns on you. It is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth, aka “baby” teeth, have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion, chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance. The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and in most cases save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just as important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits which will reward them into their adulthood.

f you are tired of going to your primary care doctor’s office every few months to get a prescription refill for your current medical condition, it may be time to change doctors. Conventional medicine continues to deal with chronic illness by targeting symptoms without really taking the time to investigate what is causing the problem in the first place. This is the biggest difference between a traditional medical practice and the type of service you will find at a functional medicine office. Functional medicine focuses on the patient as a whole and not just on symptoms. Our mission is to study the patient’s medical history as well as family history and all possible factors that are contributing to disease so we can treat the root cause of the problem. It is all about recreating balance. Do not get me wrong, there are conditions that are so serious they must be addressed immediately, but this doesn’t mean we should ignore the origin of the disease. If we only treat symptoms and ignore the underlying causes, we enter a never-ending cycle of pill-popping that will eventually affect organs and other areas of health. If a patient comes in with high cholesterol, for example, we do need to immediately rush for the prescriptive medication to treat the condition, rather we need to investigate what is causing the anomaly. Is it the family history or the patient’s lifestyle—in many cases it is a combination of factors. Changes in lifestyle, diet and nutraceuticals may be enough to control cholesterol so it is critical we identify the possible triggers and emphasize the importance of “prevention.” A traditional doctor will tell patients that they need to eat healthier, but many patients don’t even know where to start or what “healthy” even means. At a Functional Medicine Practice, lifestyle—including your food choices—are part of the conversation at every visit because we can’t ignore the importance of these factors in overall wellness and health. One growing area in the medical field is that of hormone replacement. This is where Bellissimo Medical stands out as a functional medicine practice, as we specialize in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy for both men and women. This treatment has been used effectively worldwide since the 1930s and numerous scientific studies have proven its effectiveness. However, patients need to work with qualified practitioners because hormones are a delicate subject and not everyone is trained to provide this service. Bio-identical hormones, also known as natural hormones, are substances that have the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by the human body. Because these are naturally occurring substances that are found in us all, they produce the same physiologic response and there are virtually no side effects. Although they can bring about many health benefits and improved quality of life to those who need it, we will never prescribe hormones unless absolutely necessary. We will evaluate the patient’s current health condition and learn about their medical history to be able to develop a comprehensive program that targets unique needs. Hormone levels are tested before, during and after the treatment to ensure these are maintained at optimum balance. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Heel Pain In Children BY DR. CARLO MESSINA
D
oes your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. It occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children. What are the causes? Calcaneal Apophysitis can be caused by a growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel; overactivity in children commonly between the ages of eight and 14; tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle; flatfeet; poor shoe gear or
walking barefoot; and growth spurts. What are the symptoms? Symptoms of this condition include: discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity; occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle; stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running; pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity; and pain that is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity or sits for a period of time and then tries to get up and walk. What are the signs? Parents should pay attention for the following signs their child might display: tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel; walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground; discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel; limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens. What can be done to treat this? Treatment recommendations may include: modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot; rest and ice; stretching exercises; proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel; night splinting to stretch
the tight calf muscle and arch ligament; taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone; custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment; occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing; and physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate. The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
BY EVAN BARON am often asked whether having an attorney is really necessary for individuals going through a divorce. I explain that there is no requirement that a party has legal representation but in most instances it would be a disadvantage. This is especially true if your spouse does in fact have an attorney representing him/her. An individual representing himself/herself must comply with the rules of evidence and procedure. That is not an easy task. Of course, this is assuming that a case winds up in court and before a Judge. The reality is that the great majority of divorce cases are settled by Agreement of the parties, either through direct negotiation or mediation. Does this mean that legal representation is less important? That of course would depend on a number of factors, such as the complexity of the case and the emotional state of one or both parties. It has been my experience over the many years that I have been practicing, that decisions made from emotions, are usually the wrong decisions.

In the past few months I have had several individuals come into my office to discuss the Agreements that they have already signed. Marital Settlement Agreements are binding contracts and therefore once signed are enforceable. Realizing after you sign, that you may have made the wrong decision, is not the basis for setting aside an agreement. In many of these instances, one or both parties were without representation. In almost every instance the party who is sorry that he/she signed did so because they were tired of fighting and just wanted to get it done. That gave them immediate satisfaction, that the case was settled. Unfortunately, when they were able to consider the actual terms of the Agreement, each of them realized that a mistake was made. It is possible to set aside an Agreement, but it is very difficult. A person must be able to show either fraud or duress. As stated earlier, a claim that a mistake was made, is not a legal basis to set aside the agreement. There are ways to avoid getting into such a difficult situation. Having an attorney guide you through the negotiation process should prevent you from making the wrong decision. Divorce is an emotional experience which can affect how participants react to certain issues. I have seen logical, rational and intelligent people make decisions based upon emotions; such as anger, hate or guilt. Emotions disappear over time, signed Agreements do not. My advice is to never sign a Marital Agreement just to get it “over with”. If you have any doubts, walk away. Listen to your attorney, who can advise you based upon the law and not emotion. So even if your case results in negotiation and not litigation, having an Attorney by your side may save you a great deal of hardship in the future. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Debunking Myths When Choosing a Memory Care Community BY ARTIS SENIOR LIVING OF DAVIE
I
t’s difficult to evaluate where your loved one should live and who you should trust to properly care for them. Make sure you first clear your head of any misperceptions you have about memory care. Then know the real “must-haves” to find. MYTH: A memory care community is a clinical facility filled with sedated residents and uncaring staff that relies on locked doors to keep residents safe. FACT: The lifestyle of a memory care community should not feel institutional or restrictive. Just as your loved one enjoys all the comforts of home now, a memory care community should feel the same— designed with features of home that allow independence and engagement, both indoors and out, with discreet yet full safety and security precautions.
What really matters when making important decisions for your loved one?
MYTH: Residents with dementia should live among other residents who have the same level of ability or disability. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation
Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

ASK THE SHERIFF
Real Time Crime Center BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY hen time is of the essence and lives are on the line, it is the job of law enforcement to respond to an incident quickly, decisively and effectively. With the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy still weighing heavily on our minds, Broward residents are unfortunately all too aware that any delay in action can cost lives. Since taking leadership of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, my team and I developed and implemented proactive public safety initiatives to keep our schools safe. Our efforts have proven to be pivotal in strengthening our school security. Our mission is far from complete. We are always striving to improve and stay at the forefront of emerging technology — utilizing every resource available and maximizing its impact. Recently, we launched the brand new, state-of-the-art Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) — a powerful crime fighting and crime prevention center that is safeguarding our schools. The RTCC gives us the ability to monitor real life situations in real time, Today, BSO has direct access to live video feeds, monitoring nearly 10,000 cameras in more than 260 public schools and administrative buildings, with plans in the works with Broward County Public Schools to add several thousand more in the near future. Should an incident arise, we begin working a case as soon as it’s reported — saving valuable time. It has the capability of protecting lives and preventing incidents of mass violence. The center is equipped with cutting-edge technology that allows us to identify and investigate potentially dangerous threats to our community better and take swift and effective action to neutralize the threat and mitigate damage. Because of the RTCC, we can obtain critical information and relay it to the responding deputies within minutes or even seconds — far less time and much more accurate than in the past. Originally housed in a 350 square foot office space at the Public Safety Building, the new RTCC operates in a 2,600 square foot area. It has a 40-foot front-video wall, a 16-foot side-video wall and 20 workstations for RTCC personnel. The estimated total cost for the RTCC is $2 million. It is being paid for by reappropriating funds within our budget and acquiring grants. Since January, the RTCC has conducted roughly 150 drills within Broward County Public Schools to test the camera system. RTCC personnel have also monitored and given tactical guidance to officers at the scene of numerous incidents within the schools, including lockdowns for crimes happening on and off school property. Though focused right now on our schools, we are seeking to expand into partnerships with private businesses, houses of worship and anyone interested in protecting their community. If you would like to participate, please visit us at https://www.sheriff.org.

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
Get Protection and Peace of Mind at South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS
W
hether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind protection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range. The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting system which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques. Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are gun ranges and stores frequently
dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy. How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper targets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a background in programming. We leveraged his expertise to make shooting more exciting through technology. Thus, our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, was born. You shoot
your actual gun and real ammo at interactive video targets, like zombie games, skill drills, asteroids, etc. The computer provides instant feedback, scoring and analyzing each shot. We also have a standard paper target range for those that prefer a traditional experience. Seems like a great partnership. Was it just you and your brother that started Nexus? Our third partner, Christopher Longsworth, brought the final piece of the puzzle with his background in real estate development and architecture. All the projects in his portfolio are highly regarded as being at the cutting edge of modern architecture, such as Strata at Plantation, and Koi Marina and Residences in Pompano. It was through his vision that the striking architectural design of the building and high-end retail showroom came to fruition. Our guests call our showroom the “Apple Store” or “Guggenheim Museum” of gun stores
because of the spacious, clean and welcoming environment. What else distinguishes Nexus? It’s really the experience we offer. Shooting is the “new bowling”, a family friendly activity. We’re not here to just sell guns. Nexus is the only five-star range in South Florida rated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. We received this prestigious award by providing an unparalleled shooting and shopping experience, as well as superb customer service. We carry one of the largest inventories in the country with thousands of guns in stock. We also have hundreds of rental guns, so you can try before you buy. Our training program is also extremely comprehensive. Our instructors can train anyone including someone who has never touched a gun before to experienced shooters, security personnel, and even law enforcement. We focus on the needs of female shooters too. Half of our staff is female, including our store manager. We have female instructors also. Nexus seems very high end. Is it expensive to shoot there? That’s a common misconception. Even though we are a five-star range and offer the highest level of amenities and quality, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. It’s like driving a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota! n Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. Hours of operation are MondayFriday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm. For more information, please call 954-587-8005; send an email to info@nexusshooting.com or visit www.NexusShooting.com.
