In It Together Honoring Healthcare Heroes
October heralds the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month: every year, the world witnesses unexpected bursts of pink. High school football players don pink socks in tribute to mothers’ and grandmothers’ cancer battles. Office workers wear pink ribbons signifying their support. The global movement for Breast Cancer Awareness has not only illuminated the challenges of breast cancer but also fueled immense strides in research funding.
The Our City Media family is no stranger to the horrors of breast cancer. Some of us have watched loved ones grapple with a diagnosis and eventually overcome it, while others have faced the pain of loss. Throughout these experiences, one constant remained: the relentless dedication of healthcare professionals. Their unwavering commitment to ensuring optimum health is truly commendable.
As highlighted by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, nearly 1 million Floridians have chosen careers in healthcare. This includes 83,000 doctors, 190,000 nurses, 66,000 EMTs and Paramedics, alongside hundreds of thousands in support roles.
This edition of Our City magazine celebrates some of these “Healthcare Heroes.” Discover the stories of individuals who continue to uplift our community.
A heartfelt thank you to all the healthcare workers from everyone here at Our City Media for guiding us towards a healthier and a brighter tomorrow.

Broward County Public Schools Continues FREE Meals for the 2024/25 School Year
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), the nation’s sixth-largest school district, announced that it will continue to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students for the 2024/2025 school year. Funding for the meals will come from several programs, including Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), Universal Free Breakfast, and the Universal Free Lunch Program Pilot Year 2.
Several research studies connect access to healthy breakfasts and lunches to academic success for school-aged children. These studies typically focus on the impact of school meal programs, nutrition quality, and their effects on cognitive function, behavior, and academic performance.
A 2013 study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found that children who ate breakfast regularly performed better on cognitive tasks, such as memory, attention, and problem-solving. Children who skipped breakfast or ate low-nutrient
meals had reduced cognitive function throughout the morning.
A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasized that schools offering nutritious meals through programs like the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program are positively associated with academic achievement.
The CEP offers free meals to all students at 180 eligible schools, where at least 40% of students qualify for federal assistance programs, including SNAP and Medicaid. Families at these schools do not need to fill out an application for meal benefits.
For the remaining 47 nonCEP schools, the Universal Free Lunch Program Pilot Year 2 ensures that all students receive free lunches, regardless of eligibility. Families at
these schools are encouraged to complete an online Meal Benefits application to help sustain the program and potentially access more district benefits. Universal Free Breakfast will also be available at these 47 schools.
In its announcement, the school district noted that it “continues to prioritize student health by providing more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-sodium options, as well as expanding vegan and vegetarian choices.”

CANDIDATE FOR COOPER CITY MAYOR
Iam running to serve as Mayor of Cooper City. My husband Geoffrey Lottenberg and I chose to buy our first home in Cooper City 12 years ago because we heard it was “Someplace Special.” We are now raising our three sons and two rescue dogs here. As hoped, our boys attend an “A-Rated” school and participate in the great sports programs with the Optimist Club.
Professionally, I am an attorney and manage my own law firm. The insight and knowledge I gained from my role as an attorney and business owner led to my position as the Special Magistrate for the City for the past five years and Chair of the Business Advisory Board for three years. It is this experience that made me realize that I can do more to help the City and that is why I am running for Mayor – I want to work with you, the residents, to ensure a brighter future.
The role of a mayor extends well beyond City Hall. The job includes listening to different opinions and keeping an open mind. It includes being the delegate of the City in matters at the County, State, and Federal
levels. It means collaborating with other leaders to find innovative solutions to challenges similarly faced. I have the skills and experience to serve as a refined delegate, welcomed collaborator, and zealous advocate.
Although Cooper City is already Someplace Special, there is more to be done.
First, we must address our aging infrastructure. I am committed to fixing our roads and sidewalks and improving our parks and public spaces.
Second, we must ensure our schools have the resources to provide high quality education to all students. I will also fight to maintain our school boundaries and reduce our class sizes.
Finally, we need to make it easier for businesses to start, grow, and flourish in Cooper City by leveraging technological advances to meet growing demands. As mayor, I will champion policies that promote entrepreneurship and support small businesses.
More information can be found on my website, HofitForMayor.com. Vote Hofit for Mayor to Lead Cooper City Forward!

Davie Native Deployed on USS Theodore Roosevelt
By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd
Petty Officer 1st Class Jessica Daher, a native of Davie, Florida, currently deployed aboard the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, USS Theodore Roosevelt, wishes the Pittsburgh Steelers good luck during the 2024 football season.
"Pittsburgh Steelers are my favorite team because my father is from P-Burgh and I grew up as a fan," said Daher. "I love the energy and feel of the city, and I bleed black and gold through and through."
Daher joined the Navy six years ago. Today, Daher serves as an aviation structural mechanic with Strike Fighter Squadron VFA 211 assigned to USS Theodore Roosevelt. VFA 211, nicknamed the "Fighting Checkmates," fly the F/A-18E Super Hornet fighters. The USS Roosevelt recently wrapped up an eight-month deployment with operations off the Middle East. It is a Nimitz Class carrier and one of the world's largest and most advanced warships.
An Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM) is responsible for maintaining and repairing the structural components of Navy aircraft aboard an aircraft carrier. Their duties include repairing and maintaining aircraft and supporting flight deck operations.
As Daher and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy.
“Serving in the Navy has been such a fulfilling career," added Daher. "Being on deployment is a peace for me. Everyone is so mission-focused and striving to meet the same goal. I like the singular focus and teamwork that pulls different commands together.

IN HONOR OF HALLOWEEN CELEBRITY ESTATE AND PROBATE NIGHTMARES
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
Many believe a substantial portfolio is necessary for an estate plan, but your most valuable asset is your autonomy over your own decisions. About 9 years ago, I had a client whose husband suffered a massive stroke. While he spent months in rehab unable to speak, she was unable to speak for him. Credit card companies, his car lease company and other impersonal institutions refused to communicate with her. She was frantic and helpless. Some easy estate planning would have provided her with the necessary documents to speak on his behalf.
Everyone needs a plan in case the unthinkable happens. Our clients range from Uber drivers to the uber-wealthy because an “Estate Plan” protects more than just money. We all must prepare for any potential incapacity and to consider everything from who will handle your healthcare to who will pay your credit cards if you cannot.
Frequent discussions with the public center around the topic of ‘Probate Nightmares.’ Recent examples, which may be familiar, highlight what should be avoided and serve as a reminder of the essential steps everyone must take.
1. No Will at All: this is called “an intestate estate” and is determined according to state law. The court may make decisions regarding who will receive your assets. The rockstar Prince died without a will. His full sister, five half-siblings, and hundreds more individuals claimed they were related. The IRS fought with his family for over 6 years to determine the value of his taxable estate. Lesson learned: avoid a nightmare by consulting with a trusted attorney to plan for the future.
2. Improperly Executed Will: Aretha Franklin's family assumed she had no will, but then a few handwritten documents were found, and her attorneys found a draft "Will of Aretha Franklin" that was never signed. Not one of the four alleged wills was completed according to state law. This forced her family and assets to remain stuck in court almost four years following her passing, awaiting a judge’s decision. Lesson learned: make sure your documents are properly signed and executed according to state law.
3. Choosing the Right Fiduciaries: Jerry Garcia’s family dealt with a complex will and a complex probate estate. He had named his 3rd wife the Executor (or Personal Representative) to be responsible for ongoing alimony payments to his second wife. This was not a wise decision and led to a family court battle. Lesson learned: choose the right people for the right positions involved in your future.
4. Deciding Who Gets Your “Stuff”: Robin Williams had a well-prepared estate plan, but his memorabilia, including an Academy Award, 6 Golden Globes and multiple Emmys, led to a bitter family feud. Lesson learned: personal property has value, whether emotional or financial. Don’t let your family fight over your belongings. Although each of the celebrities discussed likely had agents, managers, and attorneys heavily involved in their careers, none had an ideal estate plan.
Given the ever-changing laws and the complexities often inherent in today's families, everyone—famous or not—needs to take time to protect their loved ones with a complete, updated estate plan.

SW RANCHES UPDATE
By Council Member Jim Allbritton
The Town of Southwest Ranches new advisory board, Zero Waste, has hit the ground running. They are tasked with educating our residents on how to Recycle, Reuse and Refurbish. This education process will take some time, but I believe Southwest Ranches can lead the way on reducing the amount of trash going into the landfills, and as such there will be no need for any incinerator.
Our two-year-old “Safety and Traffic” advisory board has been sunsetted for 2024, but not without first giving the Town Council some great recommendations on how to help control speeding and the buying of equipment (tag readers) that will help our police track any suspicious activity.
Southwest Ranches has partnered with the Broward County Property Appraiser's office to help our equestrian and agricultural community with the process of filing all the necessary paperwork needed, to first apply for and to keep their classification. This is a great way to help maintain our unique and rural lifestyle.
General elections are right around the corner. Now is the time to check and make sure you are still properly registered to vote. There have been some changes, both by the State and County, regarding voter registration. Be an Informed Voter, before you cast your vote, look to see who the candidates are that you would want to govern your nation, your state, your county and your local government. As my granddaughter said, “A simple search on the computer can provide some Very interesting information.”
I hear the term “Communication” being used and I will say if you have any questions or concerns you can contact ANY Town Council Member or Town Staff Member, and you will receive an answer. The Town has a very good web page and a first-class newsletter where you can get information.

UNDERSTANDING THE DISCONNECT
WHY HOME
SALES LAG
DESPITE RISING INVENTORY & IMPROVED AFFORDABILITY
By Rose Sklar
The current real estate landscape presents an intriguing paradox: while housing inventory rises and affordability improves, home sales have yet to see the anticipated boost. This scenario raises questions about the underlying factors at play. A closer examination reveals that the issue largely stems from the pricing strategies many sellers adopt—strategies that may not align with the current market realities.
The Challenge of Overpricing
In the past, during the peak of the real estate boom, sellers could command higher prices due to intense demand and limited supply. However, today's market dynamics have shifted. With more homes available and buyers becoming more selective, sellers who price their properties above market expectations often find their homes needing more money.
The current environment calls for a different approach. Buyers have more choices as inventory increases and are less likely to make impulsive decisions. Additionally, buyers are more discerning and cautious about improving affordability, often offering prices that reflect the property's current condition and the potential costs associated with any necessary updates or renovations.
Sellers who set their prices unrealistically high rely on the hope that a buyer will eventually meet their asking price. Unfortunately, this approach frequently leads to extended time on the market, frustration, and missed opportunities.
Informed Buyers and Realistic Expectations
Today’s homebuyers are more knowledgeable than ever, thanks to the wealth of information readily available online. They can easily compare properties, analyze market trends, and assess the costs of making a home move-in ready. When they make offers, they do so with a complete understanding of the market, the home's current value, and any future investments required.
This well-informed buyer behavior often clashes with sellers' expectations. Many sellers set their prices based on personal preferences or emotional attachments to certain features—such as textures, walls, draperies, taste-specific decor, or even yard exposure—that may not necessarily add value in the eyes of potential buyers. While these aspects may hold significance for the seller, they are unlikely to justify a higher asking price to a buyer who does not share the same preferences.
The Importance of DataDriven Pricing
For sellers to be successful in the current market, they need to shift from hopeful pricing strategies to data-driven ones. This means thoroughly understanding current market conditions, analyzing comparable
sales in the area, and setting a price that accurately reflects the property's actual market value.
Correct pricing from the outset is crucial. Overpriced homes tend to stay on the market longer, eventually becoming "stale" in the eyes of potential buyers. Even when sellers eventually reduce the price, the initial high listing can leave a lasting negative impression, causing buyers to question why the home hasn't sold and whether there might be underlying issues.
Separating Personal Bias from Market Value
Sellers must also recognize that personal biases are not a strategy when dictating the pricing of their homes. Features particularly meaningful to the current owner may not hold the same value for potential buyers. Instead of allowing your personal preferences to influence pricing decisions, focus on objectively presenting your home's best features and setting a realistic price based on market data.
Rising inventory and improving affordability have the potential to boost home sales, but many sellers undermine their success by setting unrealistic prices based on personal biases. To succeed in today’s market, sellers must adopt data-driven pricing and recognize that buyers base offers on true market value, not seller expectations. Aligning prices with market realities will lead to successful sales and allow sellers to take advantage of current opportunities.

Honoring Aden Perry SW Ranches Installs Rescue Rings
Slightly more than a two years ago, an evening stroll for a mother and her son took a tragic turn when a car lost control and veered into a lake. The incident left Sarah Perry's world shattered. Without delay, her son Aden sprang into action, leaping into the water to aid the driver. Tragically, neither the driver nor Aden resurfaced, forever altering the course of Sarah's life.
“There was nothing there that night that we could have used, and I always think that if there was a ring there, then perhaps my son would be here today,” Perry reflected.
Driven by her loss, Sarah has transformed her grief into purpose through the Aden Perry Hero Ring Initiative. The initiative is committed to placing life-saving rings around various bodies of water across South Florida. The objective is two-fold: to pay homage to Aden's memory and to raise community awareness, all while
equipping people with a tool that could rescue lives.
On Friday, August 9, 2024, the Town of Southwest Ranches, in collaboration with the Aden Perry Life Ring Initiative, hosted a poignant Life Ring Installation Ceremony. The event took place at the water body located at the intersection of Hancock Road and Griffin Road, where community members gathered to honor the memory of Aden Perry.
The ceremony marked the beginning of a crucial safety initiative, introducing Coast Guard-regulated rescue rings across the town. These life rings are designed to provide immediate assistance during water emergencies, allowing bystanders to help without risking their own lives. The event not only served as a tribute to Aden's bravery but also as a significant step towards enhancing water safety within the community.

Pediatric Foot & Ankle Sprains May Be a More Complex Growth Plate Injury
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
Injuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. X-rays can fail to provide a complete and accurate picture of the diagnosis. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present.
Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of 13 and 18, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of
the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone. Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating.
X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary.
Treatment options include:
1. Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the
faster it heals.
2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Non-weight bearing would be mandatory.
3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked.
The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment.
Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the South Florida Foot & Ankle Sports Institute and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults.

What does your personal oral care have to do with your newborn? More than you think. Unaware of its importance, many women avoid regular dental care during and immediately after pregnancy. In addition, uneducated dentists may not stress its importance and may even be less willing to provide certain services during pregnancy. This is very unfortunate for there are definite implications of poor oral health in pregnant women, their pregnancies, as well as their children.
Multiple studies have shown links between periodontal disease (infection of the gums and bones supporting the teeth) and adverse outcomes in pregnancy including preterm deliveries, low birth weight babies, and preeclampsia. Children born to mothers with poor oral hygiene and high levels of certain oral bacteria have a significantly higher risk of developing cavities at an early age. This may be one of the causative factors in a child’s development of a condition called early childhood caries or ECC. ECC is a complicated situation in which cavities occur rampantly at an age in which needed care may be difficult to deliver. Fortunately, most of the causes of both cavities and ECC are preventable.
Cavities are caused in large part by having high levels of certain oral bacteria. Although children are not born with these cavity causing bacteria, they are eventually transferred by caregivers to children. This can occur, for example, by blowing on a hot spoon of cereal. It is not natural, or possible, to forever eliminate these bacteria. However, the longer it takes to transfer, the decreased risk of cavities in general and ECC specifically. The way of accomplishing this would be to eliminate cavities in the mouths of mothers (and all caregivers for that matter) and reduce the amount of plaque through regular dental checkups, cleaning and application of topical fluoride (in toothpaste and rinse).
It would be easiest to complete all dental work prior to pregnancy. However, it is important to keep in mind that most dental procedures can be accomplished during pregnancy. The safest and most comfortable time to accomplish dental work during pregnancy is the second trimester. We recommend using this time not only to receive services, but also to obtain tips for oral care for mother and baby. There are many special circumstances during pregnancy. For example, nausea and vomiting can create some difficulty in controlling the acid levels in the mouth, which can increase the risks of both enamel erosion as well as cavities in mother. You would be surprised at the creative strategies which can be used to overcome many of these challenges.

OCTOBER SENATE UPDATE
By Senator Lauren Book
As we approach the November General Election, I want to highlight some critical constitutional amendments that will appear on your ballot. These proposed changes are more than just legal updates; some of them represent citizen-led initiatives that have overcome tremendous hurdles to reach the ballot. Due to increasingly restrictive laws, gathering enough signatures to put these initiatives forward has become a monumental and expensive task—making your participation in this process more important than ever.
What
You Need to Know About Florida’s Constitutional Amendments
This November, Florida voters will see six amendments on their ballots. Each amendment needs at least 60% approval to pass, and two of them—focused on abortion access and legalizing recreational marijuana—are among the most significant in state history. Here’s a brief overview of what’s at stake:
Amendment 1: Partisan School Board Elections
This amendment would bring back partisan school board elections, meaning candidates will be listed with their political party affiliations starting in 2026. While supporters believe this change will increase transparency, others are concerned it could further politicize education.
Amendment 2: Right to Hunt and Fish
This amendment would establish a constitutional right to hunt and fish in Florida, ensuring these activities remain protected from potential future restrictions. Critics worry it could affect wildlife management, but supporters say it safeguards Florida’s outdoor traditions.
Amendment 3: Legalizing Recreational Marijuana
Driven by a citizen-led campaign, this amendment would legalize recreational marijuana for adults over 21, allowing personal use and possession within defined limits. Proponents point to economic benefits and personal freedoms, while opponents raise concerns about regulation and enforcement. Securing millions of signatures, this initiative is a landmark decision for voters.
Amendment 4: Abortion Access
Another citizen-driven initiative that secured millions of signatures, this amendment guarantees access to abortion in Florida up to fetal viability – ending government interference into medical exam rooms, instead leaving decisions about reproductive healthcare up to women and their doctors. If passed, it would overturn the state’s current six-week abortion ban. Importantly, this amendment does not affect the Legislature’s authority to require parental or guardian notification before a minor has an abortion. It also would not allow abortion until birth, as some critics have alleged; this is false information.
Amendment
5: Homestead Property Tax Adjustment for Inflation
This amendment would adjust the homestead property tax exemption to account for inflation, providing potential tax relief to homeowners. However, there are concerns about the financial impact on local governments.
Amendment 6: Repeal of Public Campaign Financing
This amendment seeks to repeal the public funding option for political campaigns in Florida, which helps candidates for governor and state cabinet positions. While supporters argue it will save taxpayer money, opponents worry it could limit opportunities for less-funded candidates.
Make Sure Your Voice is Heard
For more information on how to vote in November and what’s on your ballot, please visit your county’s Supervisor of Elections website. Broward County residents can visit www.BrowardVotes.gov or call 954-357-8683 for assistance.
It’s my honor to serve you, and I encourage you to reach out with any questions about these amendments or any other concerns at book.lauren. web@flsenate.gov or (954) 424-6674. Thank you for your commitment to our community and to the future of Florida.
