We Have Much to be Thankful For
M
any of us take a moment to sit back and give thanks during November. At Our City Media, we have something special to be thankful for, our eighth magazine, Our City Fort Lauderdale, was launched this month! Our City Fort Lauderdale is just like this magazine – full of local community and school news stories and delivered to our readers’ mailboxes every month. We are proud that Our City Magazines are a little bit different than other magazines you might receive. We are deliberately and specifically a local magazine and strive to be your source for community and school news. We are also quite proud of our positive voice. Don’t look in these pages for gotcha journalism, crime blotters or divisive political exposés. You won’t find them. However, do look for uplifting stories such as the incredible, selfless acts our neighbors performed before, during and after the recent hurricanes. You also might find pictures of a cute little puppy or a group of students competing in a science fair. In this time of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for the wonderful group of people we work with, the incredible communities we serve, and the hard-working local businesses and advertising partners that make publishing this magazine possible.

Cooper City Prepares for Annual Holiday Celebrations COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
T
he winter holiday season is upon us and there are many ways for Cooper City residents to celebrate with friends and family.
Light Up Cooper City
On December 1, the City of Cooper City will kick off the holiday season with Light Up Cooper City, from 6pm to 9 pm, at Cooper City’s Memorial Park, located between City Hall and the Community Center on 90th Ave. There will be a craft show, train, bounce houses, and numerous children’s activities. Community performances will be going on throughout the night and local schools will have their trees that they decorated on display for all to see. A special visitor from the North Pole will make an appearance at the gazebo. No charge. For information, visitwww. coopercityfl.org. “It’s a Cooper City tradition,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “Schools, local businesses and non-profits all participate. There is something for the whole family.”
Holiday Home Decorating Contest
Contest winners will receive a prize basket and a yard sign to display their victory. Winners will be announced on December 12 at the Commission meeting, with a brief reception and light refreshments before. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org or call 954-434-4300, ext. 233. “Many families make holiday strolls or drives to see decorated homes a holiday tradition,” said Trainor. “Children LOVE seeing homes decorated. Since South Florida does not always get the cool weather of winter, seeing homes decorated gives us that holiday feeling. This new event recognizes those who put a lot of time and work into their decorations and encourages the holiday spirit throughout the community.”
Brunch with Santa
By December 1, turn in your entry for a new event - the Holiday Home Decorating Contest. Discover your creativity and catch the holiday spirit as you decorate your home’s exterior. Judging will be based on exterior only an includes the following categories: Most Creative, Most Lights and Best Decorated Home. The entry fee is $5. Judging dates are December 5 and 6.
On December 9, have Brunch with Santa, at 10am. Event is for Cooper City residents, ages 3rd grade and under. Everyone receives a photo with Santa, completes a craft project and participates in “holiday” games. Tickets will be on sale at the Community Center beginning November 8. Proof of Cooper City residency is required for ticket purchase. This event has limited seating and tickets will not be sold at the door. Cost is $10 for adults (two adults per child) and $7 per child. The event will be held at Cooper City High School. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org or call 954-434-4300, ext. 233. “It’s an opportunity for children to meet with Santa on a more intimate level, while enjoying the company of neighbors and friends,” said Trainor.

Davie Fire Rescue Helps Key West Residents COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
H
urricane Irma slammed into the Florida Keys as a Category 4 storm. The islands were devastated with uprooted trees, water-filled streets and loss of power. Many of the homes and boats were destroyed. After the storm, members of the Davie Fire Rescue headed for the Florida Keys to help with the recovery efforts. Davie Fire Rescue responded as part of a task force to assist Key West residents. In Conch Key, they cleaned debris from homes and secured tarps to damaged roofs. In Big Pine and Middle Torch Key, they handed out MRE’s (meals ready to eat) and water to residents. In Ramrod Kay, they assisted residents with gathering belongings that were covering the street. “Davie Fire Rescue is a participant in the Florida Fire Chiefs Association State Emergency Response Plan,” said Julie Downey, Fire Chief, Davie Fire Rescue Department. “Our goal is to assist any other fire rescue agency requesting assistance after a disaster.” The FFCA created the SERP to provide for the systematic mobilization, deployment, organization, and management of emergency resources throughout Florida, and the Nation, in assisting local agencies in mitigating the effects of any largescale disaster. The local fire rescue agency is the first tier of response in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. These first responders provide the initial damage assessment, conduct search and rescue operations, treat the injured, and make every effort to stabilize the incident. It is understood that no local entity has all of the resources to handle the breadth of every disaster. Therefore, the FFCA SERP has been developed to provide additional tiers of response should the incident warrant.

Experience the Excitement of the Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo BY DEBBY TEICH
O
n November 9, 10 and 11, thousands of rodeo fans will honor the Town’s rural and agricultural past, as they put on their finest cowboy boots and hats for the Southeastern Circuit Finals, held at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds.
Gates open at 6pm each of the three nights, with performances starting at 7:30pm. This is the 9th consecutive year that the event will be held in “Cowboy Town.” The Davie Pro Rodeo is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Audience members will have an opportunity to see some of the most talented cowboys and cowgirls in the country compete in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tiedown roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. Contestants from the nine Southeastern States will compete for more than $180,000 in prize money, championship saddles, and championship gold and silver buckles. They will also vie for the chance to compete at the National Circuit Finals Rodeo. “People enjoy putting on their cowboy boots and hats and having a cowboy evening,” said Troy Weekly. Davie is the ideal setting for a rodeo, since much of Davie’s architectural style is modeled after the American West. The original Davie Rodeo Arena was built in 1946 by a few local cowboys and some neighborhood residents. The arena was expanded to meet the growing demand for a more versatile venue. Today, the Davie Arena on the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds is a 72,000 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor facility with a seating capacity of 5,000. It is the site for several rodeos, top name concert entertainers, monster trucks, horse shows, dog shows, car shows, air boat shows, specialty shows, industrial shows and more. “Davie is actually a crossroads of Broward County,” said Davie Mayor Judy Paul. “It’s an agricultural community that has tried to retain its rural and agricultural roots, while becoming very urban. We’re proud of our business and industrial development, because that’s what allows us to keep the rural areas rural You have to understand the balance.” For information, visit www.davieprorodeo.com.

eniors without a vehicle have one less thing to worry about. Primary Care Physicians of Florida (PCPFL) offer its patients free round-trip transportation to any of their 11 locations. They also make house calls to care for the senior population which is a primary focus of their growing practice. The practice opened its doors in 1977 with only one physician. Fast forward 4 decades, and they now offer eleven convenient locations from Aventura to Margate, with free transportation service to all locations making it easy for patients to see any of their specialists. The PCPFL team strives to achieve excellence in every aspect of the patient healthcare process, from the preliminary screening to ongoing treatment, maintenance and support. They want the medical experience to be easy and flexible while providing the best possible patient care for everyone that visits anyone of their practices. A full line of Primary Care Specialties, including Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine are all offered creating a convenient one-stop office for all their patients’ medical needs. Where are you located? We have an office in Davie, two in Hollywood, two in Pembroke Pines, and others in Plantation, Aventura, Sunrise, Coral Springs, Margate, and our newest in Lauderdale Lakes.
What specialties does your practice offer? We have a variety of specialists, including the areas of dermatology, cardiology, optometry, ophthalmology, podiatry, gastroenterology, and endocrinology. One trend we see in South Florida is the aging population, how is PCPFL adapting to this? We especially cater to the senior population by providing a ride to any one of our offices, offering the Silver Sneakers fitness program, treating age-related medical issues or making house calls. We see patients as young as 12 years old to those celebrating centennial birthdays.
It’s “Flu Season”, do you recommend vaccinations? We recommend flu vaccines to all our patients, especially our seniors. Flu vaccines are available in all our offices six days a week. Call 954-883-9107 to schedule a shot today. What differentiates you from the competition? Our complimentary transportation, same day appointments, in-house pharmacy, in-house specialists, and easy appointment scheduling certainly sets us apart from other doctor offices. Plus, we always welcome walk-ins, have long hours, are open on Saturdays, have a multi-lingual staff, and even make house calls. We believe that a key ingredient to quality healthcare and improved wellbeing is access to care, so we organized a transportation system to help our patients receive regular checkups and preventative care to keep them healthy. Our air-conditioned company vans provide round-trip
non-emergency transport to any of our South Florida locations regardless of where the patient lives. For instance, a Hollywood patient can make an appointment in Aventura, or even Margate if that’s where they want to go. What services do you offer? We offer a broad number of services such as asthma treatments, immunizations, x-rays, on-site labs, immigration and school physicals, glasses and contacts, dental and hearing services, diagnostic imaging, an in-house pharmacy, a wound care center, diabetic testing & clinical research, and weight loss programs. We accept most Medicare Advantage plans as well as all major insurance companies in South Florida. Do you treat diabetics? We are proud of our diabetic testing and clinical research. By utilizing leading-edge technology, we have been able to treat chronic diabetic patients, and have been successful in removing insulin and pills from many patient treatment regiments. How can patients make an appointment? It’s easy, please call 954-883-9107 and our attentive staff will be ready to assist.

Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents “Don’t Talk to the Actors” COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
T
his month, Davie residents can experience live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will be presenting “Don’t Talk to the Actors” by Tom Dudzick. Performances will be held at the Davie Pine Island Multipurpose Center on November 10, 11, 17, and 18 at 8pm, as well as November 11,12, 18 and 19 at 2pm. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. “Don’t Talk to The Actors” is a comedy and will be directed by Christopher Harrington. It is a story about characters in a Broadway-bound play who resort to manipulation, diva-like behavior, and chaotic abandonment to get their way. The dilemmas these crazy characters encounter are the things theatrical nightmares are made of. Cast members include: Erin Craddock, Brenda Fernandez Aulbach, Mihaela Zaharescu, Larry Chidsey, Brian McCormack, and Bill Fragetta. ACT Board members are actively involved in every production. They include: Dana Fredebaugh (president), Bonnie Ladich (VP/producer), Fern Katz (treasurer), Christopher Harrington (set consultant), Carole Czvekus (volunteers), Barry Katz (tickets), and, William Roach (publicity). ACT is always looking for volunteers. If interested, send an email on how you would like to participate to actofdavie2016@gmail.com. “ACT continues to thrive because of our enthusiastic, dedicated, and committed audiences and
volunteers - the Board of Directors, the actors, directors, production team, ticketing staff and concession crew - and the sponsorship of the Town of Davie,” said Fredebaugh. Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater at affordable prices. The volunteer group is budgeted by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. ACT’s script committee, headed by Dana Fredebaugh, selects three shows to produce every year and, most recently, a summer staged reading. After Board approval, they send out the call for directors and auditioners by sending emails through the ACT Gmail account and posting notices on numerous social media sites. All productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Multipurpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Road. Tickets are $12 at the door (credit cards accepted only in person) $10 in advance or $8 for groups of 10 or more. To order tickets go to brownpapertickets. com and enter name of show in the Search box or call Fern at 954-473-0372. (9am-6pm) and then send a check payable to the Town of Davie to Fern Katz, 2635 SW 74th Terrace, Davie, Fl. 33314. Trail Riders to Host 20th Annual Pancake Breakfast, Tack Sale & Craft Show COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
W
hether you are looking for horse-related items, crafts or a delicious breakfast, the 20th Annual Pancake Breakfast, Tack Sale and Craft Show has it all. It will be held on November 12, from 9am to 2pm, at Robbins Lodge in Davie. “The South Florida Trail Riders host one of the largest tack sales each year in South Florida,” said Brian Skelly, former president of the South Florida Trail Riders of Broward County. “You can get bargain basement prices on tack and horse-related crafts.” The event is one of many ways that the South Florida Trail Riders of Broward helps to unite the horse community. From 9am to 11:30am, club members will be flipping pancakes, which will be available for $5 (all you can eat). Hot dogs and hamburgers will also be available after 11:30am. More than two dozen vendors will sell new and used tack and horserelated goods, as well as arts and crafts, such as candles, photography, soaps, pet goods, and baked goods. Proceeds from the event will go back into the club to cover its insurance cost, materials for community projects, fun shows and parade attire. A full space (10X10 banquet table size) costs $20 and a half space (5X5 card table size) costs $10. Exhibitors are responsible for bringing their own furnishings to display their wares. Established in 1979, the South Florida Trail Riders of Broward County is an organization of people of all ages and horses of all breeds. It offers something for everyone, whether they own a horse, know someone who does, or hope to make one part of their family one day. Members are dedicated to having fun. They are
also devoted to horse and rider rights of safe passage by promoting designated horse trails. The Trail Riders meet the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Davie Women’s Club to discuss events and rides, as well as information about new products, services, trails and more. There are also guest speakers upon request. Members enjoy trail rides throughout Davie, as well as campouts almost every weekend from September to April. There are also rides and club events during the summer. Members participate in the Orange Blossom Parade, Holly Day Parade and Electric Light Parade. The group also has a Fun Show, Halloween Costume Ride, annual Christmas party, and more. “This is a group of people who have a passion for owning and riding horses, as well as helping others with that same passion,” said Skelly. When Virginia Cullen, president, got her first horse 30 years ago, there were not many established trails. “Members of the South Florida Trail Riders have fought hard to create new trails and preserve existing ones,” said Cullen. “Broward County would not have such an outstanding trail system without groups like ours.” Robbins Lodge is located at Hiatus Road, east of Flamingo Road and North of Orange Drive. For vendor registration and information, call Tina West at 954-319-1203 or send an email to tina@ allcountysurveys.com. Six Davie/Cooper City Public Schools Students Named Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program SECTION NEWS SCHOOL HEAD
BY DEBBY TEICH
A
total of 53 Broward County Public Schools students are among 16,000 semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. This includes six students from the Davie/Cooper City area. These academically talented high school seniors will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million offered next spring. The 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists, who attend public school in Davie/ Cooper City, are: Cooper City High School ▸▸ Hugh W. Dennin ▸▸ Joie L. Meyer ▸▸ Matthew N. Plonskier McFatter, William T. High School ▸▸ Andre Gomez Western High School ▸▸ Sydney H. Leiter ▸▸ Agustina Vincent de Urquiza National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) was established in 1955 - a time in which there was concern that the United States was lagging behind in the cold war scientific race, but the public was indifferent to rewarding intellectual accomplishment. In response, the National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to
develop their abilities to the fullest. The competition is very rigorous. Scholarship winners are chosen based on their abilities, skills, extracurricular accomplishments, and potential for success in college and beyond. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT) - which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year - and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring students in each state. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. In February, the six students from Davie/Cooper City will learn if they advance to Finalist standing. Approximately 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
There are a variety of Merit Scholarship awards, including some that are corporate-sponsored, college-sponsored and special scholarships. Every Finalist competes for the National Merit Scholarships, which are $2,500 single payment scholarships that are awarded on a state-representational basis. Winners are selected without consideration of family financial circumstances, college choice, or major and career plans.
Western High School Participates in 25th Year of Harvest Drive BY DEBBY TEICH
Volunteers help at Western High School’s 2016 Harvest Drive.
T
wenty-five years ago, Renee Herman initiated a canned food drive to help 25 families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday. As the grassroots volunteer effort expanded and she needed more space, she moved her collection site to Western High School in Davie. The Harvest Drive is now a yearlong multi-faceted program, but the largest project still takes place each November. Student participation in the project helps spread awareness of the issue of hunger, which impacts many of Broward County’s residents. It is a classic example of “children helping children.” Each year, students from over 180 public and private schools, as well as churches, temples, community organizations and corporate sponsors hold drives to collect non-perishables. This year, organizers are estimating that more than 2,300 families will receive a week’s worth of groceries and household items, as well as the fixings for a complete Thanksgiving meal. More than 500 families will also have free access to gently used clothing, shoes, toys, books and household items. “We are teaching the children that together we
36
NOVEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY DAVIE
can create a culture of giving,” said Herman. “We’ve made a commitment to 2,300 families and we need enormous donations from our students and community, as well as monetary donations to achieve our goal.” There are 15 schools across the county that serve as distribution centers. Western High School continues to be the largest effort and the flagship of the Harvest Drive operation. Last year, the school helped 375 families and it is expecting a greater number this year. The families, who are referred by social service agencies and Broward County school social workers, receive an average of 10 overflowing bags of groceries containing turkey, stuffing, vegetables, pies and more. They can also “shop” for clothing, shoes, books, and toys. At Western, the entire school gets involved in the Harvest Drive, including staff, administration and many clubs. To kick off the effort, students brought non-perishable items to the Homecoming Pep Rally. Clubs members have also been collecting items from Publix customers as they enter the stores.
The school’s gym will be open for the community to make donations on November 17, from 3pm-10pm. On November 20, from 8am-10pm, students and community volunteers will begin the arduous process of sorting and packing the food. On November 21, from 8am-4pm, the families will pick up their goods. Herman says that they still need corporate sponsors, as well as monetary or gift card donations from individuals to help pay for the turkeys, butter, pies, milk and other perishable goods. Since hunger occurs all year long, Harvest Drive also has year-round efforts for families who are recommended by social workers. There is an on-going food pantry closet at the school. This year, it will also distribute approximately 1,200 “helping hand boxes” filled with staples. For information, to volunteer or to donate, visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com or call 954-444-5548. Checks can be sent to Harvest Drive Inc. at 5190 NW 165 Street, Miami FL 33014.
Not a smoker? You Could Still Be at Risk for Lung Cancer There is a common misconception that if someone has never smoked that they aren’t at risk for lung cancer. While tobacco smoking is the number one cause, Bruno Bastos, MD Oncologist there are other Cleveland Clinic Florida factors that can result in the development of lung cancer. Lung Cancer Stigma Some in our society believe that diagnosis of lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke only. As a result, lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as patients with other types of cancer. “There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.”
Although smoking is certainly a contributing factor, the reality is that anyone can be exposed to second-hand smoke or other toxins, as well as have a family history of lung cancer, which can also trigger the disease. “You do not have to be a smoker in order to develop lung cancer, and it should be a major concern for everyone,” Dr. Bastos said.
therapies that target specific types of lung cancer cells.”
The stigma associated with lung cancer has also had a negative effect on research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure.
There have been some other innovations over the past few years as well. Development of screening tools such as CT scans aid in early detection of lung cancer, which Dr. Bastos said “could save tens of thousands of lives.”
“Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change, and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to share their stories.” Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment Despite the lack of funding for research, there has still been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” according to Dr. Bastos, “and genetic testing has helped researchers develop
Additionally, therapies already approved to treat skin cancer, are being considered for lung cancer as well. “Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, are also showing potential for treating lung cancer,” said Dr. Bastos.
Decrease Your Risk Even though you can develop the disease without having ever been a smoker, if you are someone who smokes, the sooner you quit, the better. Although smokers who have quit are still at an increased risk for lung cancer, the good news is that their risk decreases as the number of years they have been smokefree increases. The best advice is not to start smoking to begin with. For more information or to schedule a consultation, visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/lungcancer or call 800.639.DOCTOR today.

any people and organizations in the community have helped contribute to the success of Flamingo Elementary. Janice Crosby, principal of Flamingo Elementary School, is grateful to all the school’s Partners in Education and “Flamingo Friends,” including many who have contributed on an annual basis. This year, some of the donors included: Mr. and Mrs. Laudon, neighbors of Flamingo Elementary, and Mr. Lyle Schaefer, a former bookkeeper at the school. “They are the quiet ‘unsung heroes,’” said Crosby. “These individuals are deeply committed and ensure that our children will have what they will need for school throughout the year. We are so thankful to each of them for their consistent generosity year after year.” Renee Herman - At the beginning of the school year, Renee Herman, founder of the Harvest Drive, Inc., brought crates of colorful backpacks for students who either do not have one or need to replace one that has worn out. The organization contributes backpacks to the school every year. “Fundamental items, such are backpacks, are sometimes taken for granted,” said Crosby. “It gives us comfort to know that they are available to our students throughout the year thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Herman and the Harvest Drive, Inc. volunteers. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts!”
NSU University School Students Study the Heart by Asking Questions BY DEBBY TEICH
S
tudents in Kim Dyer’s kindergarten class at NSU University School in Davie are learning about the heart by asking questions. Dyer helps them discover the answers through hands-on, interactive learning opportunities. “Inquiry is a natural process that begins at birth,” said Dyer, kindergarten team leader, who has been in education for 26 years. “As children develop, they form a lot of their understanding of the world through the process of inquiry. Every child is a unique individual who comes to school with diverse levels of knowledge about how the world works. By using real life situations, we are able to engage the child and challenge his/her thinking.” The lesson on the heart is the first topic in the All About Me thematic unit, when the young children begin to understand their relationship with others, as well as their place in the world. Dyer started the lesson by asking her students what they want to know about the heart. Some of their responses included - Why do I need my heart? What does my heart do in my body? Why does my heart seem to move fast sometimes? How do I exercise my heart? Dyer used these questions to create activities and research that would help them discover their own answers. They created a paper heart to use as a model to investigate how the blood flows in and out of the heart. After some research, they used blue and red yarn to represent blood flow. They learned how to use a stethoscope to measure their own heart rate. Then they used a timer to count how often it beats when they are resting versus doing 15 jumping jacks. The students placed the information in a class graph to analyze the results. They used technology to enable them to see a 3-D picture of the heart, so they could create a model of it from clay. And more. This type of learning is not limited to the lesson on the heart. Students are growing and learning through exploration and inquiry in every classroom in the Lower School, including Science, Social Studies, Math, Innovation Lab, and Art Appreciation.

“Typical and more traditional learning involves teacher-centered activities in an environment that is controlled,” said Dyer. “We offer NSU University School students an environment that is hands-on and child-centered, where the educator sees himself/herself as a co-learner, working with the children to learn together. Children are given the time, space, and resources to become deeply involved in their investigation. The physical classroom contains materials and space to explore and encourages curiosity, investigation, and wonder.”

Excess Sugar—Your Worst Enemy DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
I
n today’s day and age, it is hard to tell what’s good or bad when it comes to nutrition. There is an overload of information available - studies, documentaries, blogs and social media posts. In spite of recent attempts to put the blame of our current “unhealthy” state on factors such as meat consumption and dairy products, the role of excess sugar in the American diet cannot be ignored or downplayed. Sugar has a place in your diet because your body needs it to function. When you eat food, the body breaks it down into glucose, which is released into the bloodstream. Insulin then helps move that glucose into the cells to be used for energy. But the problem is the excess - most of the processed foods or food choices that are “convenient” are loaded with hidden sugars. They won’t necessarily bring about more energy, but instead will shut your body down as proven by numerous scientific studies throughout several decades. People who suffer from diabetes have blood glucose levels higher than normal or have problems, because the body can’t make enough insulin or process it adequately. Type I diabetes occurs when the body does not produce insulin and is typically diagnosed in children and young adults, with only 5% of people suffering from this disease. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and is treated with lifestyle changes such as good nutrition and exercise. In many cases, medication is also prescribed. This is why it is critical that you take care of yourself and focus on prevention. The occasional dessert is acceptable and most likely will not kill you, but eating meals that are loaded with unnecessary sugars can wreak havoc in your body and cause serious illness. Think of food as fuel for your body and make choices that will help your body thrive and not die. The World Health Organization recommends a daily intake of about 25 gm per day. Reading nutrition labels can help monitor sugar intake. It is important to note that refined sugar has no nutritional value—no vitamins, minerals or proteins—just calories! Keep in mind that sugar alone is not going to put you at risk for diabetes, but it is a contributing factor. The same goes for obesity; not everyone who is diabetic is obese—plenty of skinny people suffer from diabetes and prediabetes. Lifestyle and genetics are important. Almost 10% of Americans have diabetes and many of them are not even aware. At Bellissimo Medical, we have the ability to determine if regulation of sugar is already an issue. We have tools that incorporate lifestyle changes, diet, exercise and medical grade nutraceuticals that may reverse a prediabetic state or assist in managing diabetes without medications, if possible, or used in conjunction with medication for better management of sugar control. Unlike Traditional Medicine, Functional Medicine is a more natural approach to blood sugar management where side effects may be minimized or even eliminated as balance is created. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For information, visit www.BellissimoMedical.com.

long with many other parents, you may be concerned with your child’s finger sucking, thumb sucking or pacifier use. The majority of children will have one of these oral habits until two years of age. The shadows of prenatal thumb sucking have been seen on sonograms for years. Newer 3-D imaging technology allows for vivid evidence of prenatal thumb sucking. Sucking is a natural reflex that helps to soothe infants and provides a sense of security. Problems arise when these habits are carried on beyond the age of two. This may result in a negative affect on development of the upper and lower jaws as well as the eventual alignment of the teeth. The amount of facial/dental changes will depend upon the duration and force of the habit. One common affect of a sucking habit is the formation of an “open bite.” This is a “malocclusion” (bite problem) characterized by a vertical space between the upper and lower front teeth. Another resulting bite problem is a cross-bite. This is seen as a backwards relation of the back teeth. The upper teeth will be positioned closer to the tongue than the lower teeth. Others may simply notice a “buck” appearance of the upper front teeth. Such conditions may possibly lead to self conscious feelings, social ridicule by peers and may result in speech problems or functional disorders later in life. We are commonly asked whether one habit is better than another. Pacifier use seems to be the lesser of the “evils.” We notice less constriction of the palate with pacifier use and it is the habit more easily broken. Put another way, we cannot simply throw out a thumb or a finger as may be done with a pacifier. In either case, it is of utmost importance that an oral habit is broken long before the eruption of permanent teeth, which usually occurs between the ages of 6-7. Most children stop oral habits on their own or with the help of their parents’ positive “big boy/big girl” reinforcement. We recommend that parents remember to praise your child for not sucking their thumb/finger instead of scolding them when they are. Try to alleviate anxiety and insecurities that may be causing the necessity to soothe this way. Peer pressure of school aged children also helps the older thumb/ finger suckers to stop. Home remedies include covering the hand with a sock, use of long sleeve night shirt with sleeves sewn closed, or rubbing aloe on the culprit thumb/finger. If attempts at habit correction fail or you begin to notice the dental/skeletal effects of these habits, it is advisable to consult with your local pediatric dentist or orthodontist. Prevention is the key! Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Housing Shortages Nationally; Hurricane Effects Locally

N
ationally, for the fourth time in five months, existing-home sales dropped as a shortage of homes for sale continues to plague the housing market. Strained supply levels of homes are making it that sales are unable “to break out,” according to the National Association of REALTORS’ latest housing report. Total existing-home sales - which include completed transactions for single-family homes, townhomes, condos, and co-ops eased 1.7 percent in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.35 million. Last month’s sales are at the lowest levels in nearly a year. Nationally, potential buyers’ demands remain strong. According to Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist, not enough homeowners are selling. “Steady employment gains, slowly rising incomes, and lower mortgage rates generated sustained buyer interest all summer long, but unfortunately, not more home sales,” said Yun. “What’s ailing the housing market and continues to weigh on overall sales is the inadequate levels of available inventory and the upward pressure it’s putting on prices in several parts of the country.” The South saw a decline in closings last month that was largely attributed to the after-effects from Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area. Home sales likely will be impacted for the rest of the year in Houston and in the most severely affected areas in Florida after Hurricane Irma. “Nearly all of the lost activity will likely show up in 2018,” said Yun.

Will the aftermath of Hurricane Irma affect our local markets?
In 1992, Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida. Afterwards, billions of dollars were poured into South Florida Real Estate. Even though recovery took some time, jobs were created, and properties experienced massive improvement - homes that may have otherwise never seen a contractor. Building “smarter” was a lesson from Andrew -- high-impact windows, additional roofs straps, and hurricane-proof garage doors, to name a few. In 2005, South Florida experienced three major hurricanes: Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Those storms started the decline in our marketplace, which did not recover until 2011.
Were the hurricanes at fault?
Remember, home prices were on an unrealistic uptick track (+2% a month in some markets), and mortgage lenders were involved in predatory practices. Our market was bound for a shift, and blame cannot be placed on the “storms” alone. People are drawn to coastal areas, and our Real Estate industry will not suffer loss of growth. The biggest discouragement will be the increase of homeowners’ insurance, higher deductibles, and the reconsideration of lenders regarding flood insurance. Both counties have created programs which is part of the property tax system. The PACE program in Broward or the YGRENE program in MiamiDade allows a homeowner to make the necessary home improvements to insure safety and allow a future buyer to more easily secure insurance and financing. There’s nothing so important as safety. Making your home a sound structure for you and your family and any future family will lead to peace of mind as well as secure the value of your most important financial asset. I am not suggesting that mediation is always the wrong decision. In fact, parties who cannot reach a settlement on their own, even when represented by attorneys, must attend mediation prior to a final hearing being set. So, mediation can be a very successful tool, provided you know the law. If you are aware of what you are either entitled to or what you must give up, then a fair and equitable settlement can be reached. If you enter mediation without any idea of how the law is structured, you run the risk of reaching an unfair agreement. Perhaps the most important consideration is choosing the correct mediator. Mediators are trained and licensed. I find it very important when hiring a mediator to make sure his/her personality will be favorable for my client. Each mediator has a different style in the way they approach a case. Mediators generally charge from $150 to $350 an hour for their time. Most mediations last at least four to five hours, although some can last a full day. Anything discussed in mediation is confidential and therefore cannot be discussed after the mediation concludes. This is to promote the exchange of settlement offers without the fear that these offers will be used against you, should the mediation not be successful. A successful Mediator will settle a very high percentage of their mediations. Those are obviously very good odds for success. My best advice is to go see an attorney to learn about you rights before going blindly into a mediation. Remember, the agreement you sign can change your life forever!

any couples are choosing to attend mediation rather than seek the representation of an attorney when considering a divorce. So rather than speaking to an attorney to learn about the law, they decide to attend a mediation session without representation, hoping to settle their case quickly and painlessly. In some cases this could be a good idea, since it probably would be less costly. Sometimes, however, it is “penny wise and pound foolish.” You may be successful in saving costs and attorney’s fees, but you may in turn be giving up more than you should. A signed mediation settlement agreement is a binding contract between the parties. If in fact you change your mind about the distribution of property after the agreement is signed, you will generally be “stuck” with your decision. “I didn’t have an attorney” will not be a defense. In addition, the mediator, although usually an attorney, is not playing the role of an attorney and therefore cannot give either party legal advice. Basically, you will be on your own.

hen disaster strikes, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is ready, willing and able to lend a helping hand to those in need at a moment’s notice—no matter where it occurs. From the heart of Broward to the people in need in the Florida Keys and Puerto Rico, BSO was there to assist in whatever manner was needed during this deadly and catastrophic 2017 hurricane season. Ensuring the safety and security of Broward residents and visitors is always BSO’s top priority, even in the face of battering winds and flooding rains. The hardworking men and women of this agency gave all they had to keep Broward safe this hurricane season. However, we also answered the call for help from our neighbors and friends who were in desperate need of assistance. We didn’t do this because we had to. We did because it’s the right thing to do. Public safety is about helping those in need, even if disaster doesn’t touch us personally. And as this devastating hurricane season showed, there were many far less fortunate than us here in Broward that required the kindness and assistance of outside help.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Irma in September, BSO sent a unit of BSO deputies, specialists and communications equipment to Monroe County, where some of the worst damage from the hurricane occurred. The Communications on Wheels (COW) vehicle we set up there allowed first responders in the Keys to coordinate their relief efforts and assist the stormweary residents of Monroe County. Our civilian dispatchers also answered the call for help. Monroe County, from the Everglades to Key West, received some of Irma’s nastiest winds and weather and needed a lot of help recovering. They asked for dispatchers to help field some of the emergency calls they were receiving, and we sent some of our finest. Seventeen of our fire rescue personnel also made the trip to the Florida Keys to assist residents, whose way of life forever changed because of the storm. In one instance, a weakened and thirsty Key Deer was given a second lease on life, thanks to a member of BSO Fire Rescue who hand-fed the animal four bottles of water and helped it recover. BSO also sent a contingent of fire rescue personnel to Puerto Rico to assist local authorities in handling the devastation caused by powerful Hurricane Maria. None of this would have been possible, however, had it not been for the amazing residents of Broward. I am so incredibly proud of you. I was amazed by your incredible acts of kindness and selflessness, and impressed by how you followed the direction of public safety professionals to the best of your abilities - keeping your families safe during the worst of it. Property and possessions are replaceable; lives are not. Your response made Broward safer and allowed us to help those in dire need elsewhere. Here’s hoping for a quiet final month in the tropics. But know we are ready to assist anyone who needs us at the drop of a dime. When people are in trouble, we try to help. We are BSO, and that’s what we do. For information, visit www.sheriff.org.

he buildup of calcified plaque in your arteries can be an important indicator for atherosclerosis, a condition also known as coronary artery disease (CAD). For this reason, your physician may recommend a cardiac computed tomography (CT) for calcium scoring.
A CT scan is a diagnostic medical test that, similar to x-rays, produces multiple images of the inside of the body. The cross-sectional images generated during the CT scan may be reformatted in multiple planes and 3-D images that can be viewed on a computer monitor or printed to film. These images can often provide greater detail than traditional x-rays. A cardiac CT scan to determine coronary calcium is a non-invasive way of obtaining information about the presence, location and extent of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries. This calcified plaque results from a build-up of fat and other substances under the inner layer of the artery, which can indicate the presence of atherosclerosis, a disease of the vessel wall. Over time, progression of plaque can narrow the arteries or close off blood flow to the heart, resulting in chest pain or a heart attack.

Davie Update
I
hope everyone fared well during Hurricane Irma. Hurricane season will continue through November 30. I urge everyone to always be prepared with the appropriate supplies needed to keep your family and home safe. As we move through the fall season and into the winter months, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has much to offer in the way of programs and community events. The dedicated staff of this department is just one of the many things that make the Town of Davie a great place to live, work and play. The Town’s annual Holiday Craft Show and Green Fair will take place on November 18 and 19 at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The show will feature over 100 craft vendors, community performances, and children’s activities.
Since calcium is a marker for CAD, the amount of calcium detected on a cardiac CT scan is a helpful prognostic tool. The findings from the CT scan are expressed as your “calcium score.” During the test, special x-ray equipment will be used to determine if your arteries are blocked or narrowed by a buildup of plaque. No special preparation is needed in advance of a cardiac CT exam, but the following is recommended: • Avoid caffeine and/or smoking at least four hours prior the exam • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing • Remove all metal objects, such as jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures and hairpins, as they may interfere with the images. In addition, women may be asked to remove bras containing metal underwire. Women should also inform their physician or CT technologist if there is any possibility that they are pregnant.
Scoring If your test shows no calcification within your coronary arteries, your scan will be considered negative. A positive test means that CAD is present, whether or not you are experiencing any symptoms. Emergencies are never planned but The Emergency Center in Davie offers complete, convenient emergency services that never closes. The Emergency Center of Davie, located at 10230 W State Rd. 84, is just West of Nob Hill Rd on West State Rd 84. For more information please visit:

On December 2, Town Councilmembers and I will “flip the switch” during our Holiday Lighting of the Greens event at Town Hall. Join us for a night of fun that will include live performances, pictures with Santa, a lighted Horse Parade and more. The following weekend, on December 9, the fun continues with our Holiday Snow Play festival at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. A special delivery of snow from the North Pole will be on site for children to play in, as well as a skating rink, train ride, children’s activities and pictures with Santa! The Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, home of the Davie Pro Rodeo, welcomes back the Southeastern Circuit Rodeo Finals on November 9 - 11. This competition is something you definitely don’t want to miss! Cowboys and Cowgirls from across the Southeast United States compete over the three days for a chance to move on to the National Rodeo Finals. The CrossFit Ripped Competition returns to the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds on Sunday, December 3 for the second consecutive year. The Bergeron Rodeo Grounds holds numerous events throughout the year. Our multiuse facility is available for corporate events, car shows, craft shows, competitions, community events, concerts and festivals. We are always looking for new events to be held there. If you are interested in hosting an event, please contact the Town’s special events division at 954-797-1076. The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers a wide range of both traditional and non-traditional sports programs throughout the year. For youth ages 3-14, we offer Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Flag Football, and Flag Cheerleading. Some of our more non-traditional sports and contractor lead sports include Skateboard lessons, PickleBall lessons, Tennis lessons, Lacrosse, and Basketball instruction. As always, remember if it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes and activities for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. See you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook. Miki a 3 1/2 pound Mi-Ki (pronounced Mee-Kee), just celebrated her first birthday. The rare toy breed’s favorite person is her human mommy Ruth. She likes to be anywhere her human is, and truly dislikes nothing. The sweet natured pup’s favorite toys are a small squeaky bear and a bully-stick. She loves looking at herself in the mirror, and was last seen snuggling against her favorite human.

Rich Georgi took a copy of Our City Davie with him on a trip to the Inca ruins at Machu Picchu in Peru. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was constructed as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often mistakenly referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas,” it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization.
