Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 12/31/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Andrea or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at: WindmillHealth@att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

n the span of just six days, eleven people were murdered at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a man murdered two black shoppers at a grocery store outside of Louisville, Kentucky, and a local man mailed more than a dozen pipe bombs to prominent critics of the President. In summary, it was a horrible week for our country that was driven, in part, by division and hatred. Shortly after the horrible events in Pittsburgh however, Tarek El-Messidi, a founder of the Muslim group Celebrate Mercy, set up a fundraising initiative in partnership with another Muslim group called MPower Change on behalf of the Tree of Life victims. Their goal was to raise $25,000 to help the Jewish families impacted by the assault. In a matter of days, they had raised more than $250,000, mostly from Muslim donors. Perhaps as important as the financial aid is the message they sent: we are all in this together. El-Messidi emphasized his motivation to help was driven by a sense of shared humanity, “We are here for you, if you need anything at all. If you need food for the families, if you just need someone to come to the grocery store because you don’t feel safe, we will be there for you.” In this time of extreme division, we can all learn from the example of the actions of these thoughtful, generous people. When we sit down with our families this holiday season, regardless of whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas or nothing at all, we must all remember that we are in this together, not against each other. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Town of Davie Sponsors Mayors’ Chess Challenge BY DEBBY TEICH

hess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning and development, especially when it is played from a young age. Chess players of all skill levels and ages recently participated in the Mayors’ Countywide Chess Challenge, which was hosted by the Town of Davie. Town of Davie Mayor Judy Paul, City of Sunrise Mayor Michael Ryan, a few City of Sunrise School Resource Officers

and others were on hand to challenge the children. “Chess provides an avenue for children to utilize their analytical and critical thinking skills,” said Jeff Pohlman, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. “These skills are not only applicable to the game, but also to real life. In addition, the kids have a lot of fun challenging each other.” The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is a free program designed to bring atten-

tion to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in the community. The challenge is held in collaboration with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation and several other municipalities in Broward County. Over 100 kids and parents typically attend. It is an opportunity for schoolaged children to exercise their minds, as they compete against elected officials and one another. Instructors from the Sunrise Center for Excellence in Chess are typically on hand to help those new to the game. From September to May, the challenge rotates monthly to 19 different municipalities in the area. Players receive a Mayors Chess Challenge Passport so they can log their participation over the course of the school year. Those with perfect attendance receive a prize at the end of the season. The Challenge will be held in Cooper City on February 9.

I was one of the first physicians to perform Endovenous Laser Ablations in Ohio and nationally. I was one of the first in Florida to perform Clarivein procedures and have been performing ultrasound guided sclerotherapy and foam for decades. We can treat all aspects of vein disease. Describe some of the procedures do you offer. We offer the newest and best minimally invasive vein procedures, including

Endvenous laser Ablation, Venaseal, Veingogh, Laser spider vein removal, Phlebectomies, Foam sclerotherapy and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy. Do you offer tattoo removal? We also offer tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation with the Picoway Laser. This laser removes tattoos much faster than others on the market and uses vibrational energy to shatter the ink particles, so the ink goes away much faster than other nano lasers. Resolve by Picoway shrinks pores, tightens skin, erases acne scars and sun spots and discolorations while building collagen with little to no down time. It is literally a lunchtime make over. What else do you provide? We now have an aesthetician on staff and are one of the first facilities to offer Vivace microneedling and RF for skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, scar reduction, decrease in stretch marks and more. This can be done before an event to make your skin camera ready and give you that extra lift and glow. It can be combined with PRP. Come try it today and be one of the first to experience this amazing procedure and start looking younger! What is vein disease and how does it progress?Veins are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. When the valves in the veins are not working correctly, instead of all the blood going back to the heart, some drips slowly downward causing the blood to pool and the legs to feel heavy, achy and tired. The legs start to look more and more discolored and more veins appear and the ankles start to turn blue and brown. Over time, the ankles

Diagnosis and & Laser Procedures swell and the skin scars down and hardens. The veins bulge more and more, and more skin changes occur. Venous eczema develops and gradually people can get lipodermatosclerosis, atrophie blanche and ulcers. Bleeding veins are also a problem, and the bleeding is very difficult to control. What should people do about vein disease? Patients should call for a consultation and have an ultrasound to diagnose the source of their vein problems. Until the appointment, patients should elevate their legs, wear compression hose, and take anti-inflammatories for their pain.

Why do people remove tattoos? People are often very excited when they get a tattoo. However, over time, this happiness can fade. Having the reminder of an ex or something that one is no longer involved with is not appealing. Many times, people want to climb the corporate ladder and various companies have policies about covering or removing tattoos in visible areas. Some people want more space for more ink. Some tattoos are done wrong and people are not happy from the beginning. Whatever the reason for removal, Picoway laser is the best tattoo removal laser out there. It removes all colors of ink on any skin type faster and better. It removes the tattoos in fewer treatment sessions and with less pain

than other lasers. What else is Picoway used for besides tattoos?Resolve by Picoway is used to remove skin discolorations with aging. It helps build collagen, fade sun spots, refine pores, tighten skin and reduce wrinkles. It is also used to fade spots and help tighten and refine the décolleté and people’s hands. It is FDA approved for the removal of acne scars and can help fade and refine scars of all types especially after breast augmentation, C-sections and tummy tucks. Picoway is fast, effective and has really no down time. You look amazing almost immediately. What does the Gentle Max Pro Laser do? It can remove spider veins, sun spots or discolorations, and is amazing at removing unwanted hair. It has one of the largest spot sizes on the market and can remove hair super fast with little to no pain on every skin color. As well, it works great for laser facials and building collagen. What are your newest procedures? The newest procedure we have is Vivace that tightens the skin, builds collagen and elastin and helps with wrinkles, lax skin, stretch marks scars and more. There is no real down time. It doesn’t hurt and can be done in the matter of minutes. Come check it out today.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS BY DEBBY TEICH

T

his month, families will celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. They will decorate trees; sing carols; and anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus. They will light Menorahs; play with dreidels; and indulge in festive foods like latkes. They will focus on the seven core values of Kwanzaa; light the Kinara and place a Mkeka on the table. For many, it is a time for gift giving. The holidays can also be a wonderful time for families and friends to put down their electronics to reconnect and spend quality time together, as they celebrate old traditions and create new ones. It is an opportunity to teach children about their heritage and the true meaning of the holidays. Every family’s style of celebration is different, and it is those differences that make the holidays so magical. And remember, traditions don’t always have to be traditional; they come in all shapes, sizes and varieties. Below are some simple ways to celebrate both the traditions and spirit of the holidays. ▸▸ Make holiday foods together. So much of the holidays revolves around cooking and eating traditional foods. It is a great time to pass down a family recipe. Whether it is baking cookies and pies, frying latkes, or cooking brisket and turkey, get as many family members to help in the kitchen. Assign each one a task. Play some fun holiday music to make it even more festive. ▸▸ Limit your gift giving. Many families save all year to be able to afford a wide range of gifts for every family member. Decide on a designated amount, so everyone gets the same number. One might even be a trip or event that the whole family can do together. Or, skip the gifts and focus on being together and family traditions, instead of unwrapping gifts. ▸▸ Read a holiday book together. Pull out a copy of one your favorite holiday books from your childhood and read it with your kids. Or, read a new story together. ▸▸ Be kind to others. Volunteer as a family and do something special for someone else. Visit

▸▸

a nursing home; collect food items for a local shelter; work in a soup kitchen or food bank; bring blankets to the homeless; or contact a nonprofit that needs a helping hand. Recount your childhood traditions. Children love to hear about how their parents celebrated when they were young. Talk about your own family traditions and ask the children to suggest new ones. Celebrate the holidays with your family long distance. Today’s technology makes it easy to connect with family that live in other places, so you can celebrate the holidays together and continue to make new memories. Wear the same pajamas. Watch the same movie at the same time. Place a group video call for some virtual caroling or a virtual dreidel game. Make a family recipe together, even if you are not in the same kitchen. Keep a smile on your face. A smile is often contagious. Try to smile as you go about your errands. Treat each sales clerk and cashier with kindness. Set the table with festive decorations. Get the kids involved in setting the table with crafts they made and other holiday decorations.

▸▸ Give a handmade gift. Instead of shopping in the traditional places, come up with something creative and make your own homemade gift. These are often the most meaningful gifts you can give. ▸▸ Adopt a needy family. There are so many children that long for gifts on the holidays. Adopt a family and find out what they want. You can even deliver the gifts as a family. ▸▸ Count down to the holidays. Extend the excitement of the holidays and start celebrating before they begin. Create a list of fun activities

that families can do together in the days prior. ▸▸ Create family rituals. Create a few rituals to observe each year that family and friends will look forward to as the season approaches. ▸▸ Watch television together. Gather the family together in one room to enjoy a holiday snack and watch a holiday classic. ▸▸ Make a Giving Tree. Buy a small artificial tree and hang paper ornaments with the names of charities and gifts the needy might want. Ask each child to select a charity and purchase the gifts. You can even deliver the gifts with the kids. ▸▸ Create a holiday craft together. Whether it is a Christmas tree ornament, Menorah or Kinara, spend quality time with the kids making simple crafts they can display. ▸▸ Make a gingerbread house. Explore your creativity (and sweet tooth) by decorating a gingerbread house together. Then display their masterpiece on your holiday table. If that is too difficult or time consuming, decorate gingerbread cookies instead. ▸▸ Plan a special day together. Plan to spend a day with your family and leave the electronics behind. Go to the beach, zoo, movies or plan a picnic in a park. ▸▸ Spread holiday cheer with baked goods. Deliver some of your baked goods to friends, family

Lee Nails & Spa

and neighbors. Wrap them in holiday colors and include a special hand-printed message from the kids. ▸▸ Deck the halls. The most decorated area of the house is typically the living room. Spread holiday cheer to the bedrooms, hallways and other areas of the house. ▸▸ Call friends and relatives. Make a surprise call to someone who was not expecting it. They will be happy to hear from you.

SI Davie Seeks Applicants for Youth Leadership Award BY DEBBY TEICH

S

oroptimist International of Davie strives to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. The club is currently seeking applicants for its Youth Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions young women make to their communities through volunteer and leadership actions. The application deadline is December 15. The Youth Leadership Award reinforces Soroptimist’s commitment to young women leaders of the future. It is for young women in high school, between the ages of 14 and 18, that have demonstrated initiative in both identifying a problem and in trying to solve it through volunteer action. The winner will receive two cash prizes - $500 for the winner to use however she wishes and a $250 donation to the charitable organization where she works as a volunteer. The cash award will be presented in March 2019 at the Soroptimist of Davie Awards luncheon. The application includes an essay of up

to 750 words. Some of the questions include: Where do you volunteer? What kind of leadership role have taken with this organization? Describe the goals of the organization and its impact on the problem(s) it addresses. What is the role of the organization? What have you accomplished as a volunteer? “The award is based solely on the applicant’s volunteer and leadership qualities and is an opportunity to honor a girl who might not otherwise receive recognition,” said Susan Coyle, member of SI Davie. “She may not be the best student, best athlete, or most popular girl in school, but she is committed to making the

world a better place.” Last year’s award winner was Gabriella Carter of Miramar High School. She received a cash award of $500, as well as a check of $250 given in her name to the school’s HOPE Club. Gabriella lost three friends to gun violence and a cousin to a drunk driver. Searching for an escape from her depression she stumbled upon the Broward Youth Coalition with the United Way where she became an active leader. She coordinated the foundation of a new club at Miramar High School, the HOPE Sunshine Club: Helping Overcome Problems Effectively. The club’s mission is to educate, support, and develop problem solving, coping and leadership skills, while fostering the prevention of suicide, bullying and substance abuse. Through these organizations Gabriella has made a tremendous impact on raising drug, substance, suicide and mental health awareness. The Davie chapter of Soroptimist International has 50 members. They meet at noon on the first and third Tuesday of the month at Pembroke Lakes Country Club. Youth Leadership Award applications are available at www.sidavie.org under the program area or by sending an email to maryannagiordano@gmail.com or calling 954-649-0566.

Cooper City Challengers Offers Socialization for Special Population BY DEBBY TEICH

C

ooper City Challengers provides a way for young adults with special needs to get out, mingle and have some fun. Each month, they meet for Bingo, Movie Night, dances, birthday celebrations and special events. The group was formed in 2014 by a group of families whose special needs children graduated from the ESE program at Cooper City High School and surrounding areas. After high school, there tends to be a drop off in activities for special needs kids, so the group provided a way for their children to stay in touch with the friends they had made. It has continued to grow throughout the years. “I got involved so I could spend time with my

friends and meet some others,” said Jennifer Cook, who attends events. “This group is important to me, because it gives me fun activities to look forward to doing each week with a bunch of my friends. I always know that I’ll have a fun Friday night!” “I love to get involved with Cooper City Challengers to make friends, even new friends,” said Melanie Drew, 29, who attends events. “I can be myself without making it all about me.” Each attending member must be accompanied with adult supervision (if needed) for the entire event or make arrangements with another parent attending to be responsible. As a result, the group also acts as a support group for the families. Siblings are encouraged to attend, as well as anyone else who is part of the family unit. The Challengers is currently open to Cooper City residents only. Each attending resident is allowed one non-resident guest per event. Most of the current participants are 20 to 40 years old, but all ages are welcome.

The group meets at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center, 11600 Stonebridge Pkwy. The City of Cooper City provides the facility free of charge. ooper City Elementary School and Griffin Elementary were among the many Broward County Schools that joined the nationwide effort to break the world record for people reading the same book on the same day. They participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, an annual campaign that highlights the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child. The program sends a powerful message to children about the importance of reading and helps them get them excited about books and learning. On October 25, students gathered around as volunteers read this year’s official book, “Maybe Something

erry Morgan passed away on January 27, 2012. More than 100 family members and friends recently gathered to celebrate Jerry and dedicate a new park in his memory. Jerry Morgan Park is located on Palm Ave (100th) and SW 55th Court. It is a passive park, with a walking/running path, lake and bird watching. After City of Cooper City Mayor Greg Ross spoke, Jerry’s daughter, Allison Morgan; son, Jerry Morgan Jr.; wife, Pat Morgan; and friend, Steve Lawson shared memories of him. Next, Steve unveiled the plaque that remains in the park. The plaque offers some background information and also describes how he made those around him feel special: “Jerry had the ability to make anyone laugh and always greeted people with enthusiasm and delight. Jerry was the embodiment of what makes Cooper City ‘Someplace Special.”’ Jerry moved to Cooper City in 1990. He coached both his son and daughter in the Optimist Club for 22 years, as well as many boys in Cooper City. Jerry was a dedicated champion of Cooper City youth activities and was devoted to Optimists sports. He was well known for remembering most of the players stats. He also volunteered at Cooper City High School for many years. “The City Commission voted to name this park for him in honor of the many years of volunteer service he provided to the Optimist Club of Cooper City and all he did for the community,” said Denise Lasarte, Community Liaison for the City of Cooper City.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

The students of Southwest Ranches have contributed their muscle, creativity, artwork, scout troops and ingenuity to create a wonderful place to live and I am so proud to be a part of giving something back to them.” SEAB is a volunteer Town Advisory Board that was formed to give students and parents a voice, as well as to provide advocacy in the Town of Southwest Ranches. NSU University School Students Study Red Tide BY DEBBY TEICH

G

iven the rapid spread of red tide in Florida and its recent detection in South Florida, NSU University School fourth grade students conducted experiments to test the conditions in which algae will grow the fastest. The future leaders are learning to be proactive problem solvers and use their talents to help preserve our planet. “Through inquiry learning and a hands-on investigation, students are exposed to current news and develop a better understanding of issues that are impacting our community,” said Fanya DeMaria, M.Ed. – NSU University School Lower School Science Lab Teacher. “We want students to make vital connections to how we, as humans, can cause some of the most devastating events, but can also develop real-life, impactful solutions.” The students began by discussing the three main causes of red tide – warmer ocean waters, low salinity and high nutrient content – and viewing them on a Multi-Flow Thinking Map. Next, they made some predictions and conducted experiments by exposing plastic bottles filled with algae water and fertilizer to different amounts of sunlight. The student predictions proved true: algae grew faster when exposed to increased light conditions. Many of the students said they have experienced red tide first hand by smelling something foul or seeing dead marine life when visiting certain beaches on the west coast of Florida. All of them, however, agreed that they now felt more informed and able to recognize the signs of red tide in our waterways. “I learned that red tide causes sea animals to die,” said Lia Siwinski. “I also learned that red tide can harm humans and animals. I will try to help other people to recognize what it is so that everyone can save themselves and animals.” “I learned that red tide can cause upper respiratory and take away jobs of many, including hotels, beachside shops, and restaurants,” said Adam Ginsburg. “I am going to make big changes. If my parents say they are making family trip plans to

parts of Florida where ride tide is, I would warn them. I will also tell this information to my friends and family. I will also try to find a solution to get red tide to go away.” Students in other grades in the Lower School are studying a variety of environmental issues, such as the effects of global warming, natural disasters, and oil spills.

Davie Students Celebrate Government Week BY DEBBY TEICH

Recreation and Cultural Arts for the Town of Davie. “We love being able to show the kids the ins and outs of what we do here.” Approximately 50 students from Fox Trail Elementary and Summit-Questa Montessori attended the activities throughout the week. Students toured Davie Town Hall, where they observed Town staff performing their daily tasks. They also interacted with staff that work in Administration, Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts, Budget and Finance, Human Resources, and Town Attorney. hen Davie’s Mayor, Councilmembers and staff make decisions, they directly impact the people who live there. Davie students recently had an opportunity to learn what it takes to run their Town. They toured Town Hall, and visited with the Mayor and staff from various departments. It was all part of 2018 Florida City Government Week, an ongoing effort sponsored by the Florida League of Cities that raises public awareness about the services that municipalities perform and educates the public on how municipal government works. Municipalities are encouraged to involve their local schools, businesses, media and civic clubs in planning City Government Week activities that provide and foster civic education, collaboration, volunteerism, and more. The theme for the program is “My City: I’m part of it; I’m proud of it.” “Government Week is a great way for students to experience what it is like working for a municipal government,” says Jeff Pohlman, Director of Parks,

ASK THE SHERIFF

Helping Others in Times of Need BY SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL he Broward Sheriff’s Office is continuing a rich tradition of assisting others in times of need. When disaster strikes, the BSO is ready, willing and able to lend a helping hand to those in need at a moment’s notice—no matter where or when it occurs. From the heart of Broward to the people in need in the Carolinas and the Florida Panhandle, BSO was there to assist in whatever manner was needed during this deadly and catastrophic 2018 hurricane season. Following the monster one-two punch of Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael, dozens of our brave men and women in the Department of Law Enforcement and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue (BSFR) answered the call for help from our neighbors and friends who were in desperate need of assistance. They put their comforts aside and put their lives on the line to help people in far-off locations they knew little to nothing about. These selfless actions are a continuation of BSO’s long and rich history of sending assistance to other counties, states and even countries who have been impacted by disaster. While ensuring the safety

T

and security of Broward residents and visitors is always BSO’s top priority, we promote the ideals of public safety by helping any way and anywhere we can. Public safety is about helping out those in need, even if disaster doesn’t touch us personally. As this devastating hurricane season showed, there were many who required the kindness and assistance of outside help. Following Hurricane Florence’s fury in September, a team of BSFR personnel sprang into action at a moment’s notice to assist in the rescue efforts in South Carolina in the aftermath of the hurricane. The team was deployed as part of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Florida Task Force 2 and was tasked with locating and helping people stranded due to the rising waters of the hurricane. While on the ground, these brave men and women assisted in multiple rescues and no doubt helped save lives. Just weeks later, the team was sent into action once again when Hurricane Michael tore through the Florida Panhandle. They were joined by BSO’s Quick Response Force—a unit of 24 law enforcement personnel from all around the county who packed into a caravan and headed up to Bay County in the Florida Panhandle to assist in providing law enforcement services to the ravaged region. Working 12-hour shifts, the 23 deputies and one community service aide performed vital law enforcement functions, including responding to calls for service, patrolling for antilooting, assisting with traffic and search and rescue.

So we would not be a burden on local resources, which were greatly diminished by the hurricane, this unit was self-contained. They arrived with everything they needed, including water, food and clothing to last for their eight-day deployment. These deployments came just a year after BSO personnel travelled to the Florida Keys and Puerto Rico to help in the relief efforts and assist the stormweary residents following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. I am so incredibly proud of the men and women of this agency who drop everything and give their all to help any way they can. If disaster strikes again, they are ready to roll. ASK THE EXPERT

Would My Child Benefit from Sedation Dentistry? (Part II) BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN ast month’s editorial (Part 1) covered the process in deciding upon the need and therefore use of sedation dentistry. This process requires the consideration of many factors ranging from the child’s dental needs and age to family finances. This month’s article will assume the need and focus mostly on available options. In other words, it will tend to be less emotional and more scientifically driven. The major criteria in choosing a specific sedative agent is the depth of sedation desired. The concept of level of sedation is so important that most professional organizations categorize sedation not by the individual drugs or route of administration but rather through the level of sedation created. The categorized levels of sedation are the following: minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia. The importance of this distinction is that a facility must be adequately staffed and equipped to monitor the level of sedation used. It is important to note that facilities offering different modes of sedation are strictly regulated and go through an annual recertification process. In an effort to simplify the discussion, I will review some sedative medications based on

L

46 DECEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY DAVIE | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

mode of delivery as this is usually how they are presented in the office setting. Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is the only inhalation sedative used in pediatric dentistry. It is used as a “minimal sedative” mostly for its relief of anxiety. It is mixed in combination with pure oxygen which assures proper concentration of oxygen to the body. Its excellent safety record along with versatility of use makes it the most commonly used sedative agent in pediatric dentistry. The oral sedatives can potentially span all of the levels of sedation. For example, Diazapam (Valium) or Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), when used by themselves, are mostly used as minimal sedatives. However, when used in larger doses or in combination with other oral sedatives, these agents can cross over into moderate sedation or even deep sedation. There are many factors having to do with their absorption through the digestive system, which make them more unpredictable in terms of the degree of sedation as well as duration of effect. For this reason, their use is not usually recommended for extensive treatment plans and is usually titrated from visit to visit. The sedatives delivered intravenously are used for the purpose of deep sedation. The use of these agents can be used for extended treatment times and can usually be reversed if needed by antagonist agents. Thus, intravenous sedation is the most versatile and predictable technique used in the

dental office. General anesthesia, practically speaking, provides for similar conveniences as intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia must be performed in a hospital setting and is specifically used for patients who have a higher potential for airway obstruction. When considering the use of sedation for your child, it is important to recognize that one form of sedation is not inherently better than another. Be open to all options and consider which is most appropriate for the individual patient and situation. The goal of proposed treatment should not only be the effective completion of needed dental work but more importantly doing so with a resultant positive attitude and safety of the child. This cannot be consistently achieved with a one size fits all approach. The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. xposure to heavy metals is common and has been linked to serious health issues. Are you at risk? In a previous article, I wrote about “The Dirty Dozen.” This is a top 12 list of produce items that were shown to have pesticide residue, even after being washed, as revealed by The Environmental Working Group (EWG). The research indicated up to 70% of conventionally grown produce had traces of pesticide, with spinach having the greatest amount of residue by weight. Now we are going to dive into why this information is important and what other pollutants we want to keep our eye out for. Individuals need to understand that pesticides are toxic to the human body and have been shown to be detrimental to a person’s health. What is even more alarming is that children are at greater risk because the pesticides will stay in their bodies for a longer period of time. Consider this. After studying Ecuadorian children during peak pesticide spraying season, researchers found the youngsters had lower attention spans and less self-control than children who were tested later. They concluded pesticide exposure causes a short-term decline in neurological functions, which is a problem considering Ecuador is a major producer of flowers and pesticide levels peak during harvest season. Newborns who are exposed to agricultural chemicals have higher risk for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in addition to other health risks. But agricultural poison is not the only thing that’s making our bodies toxic. In today’s day and age, we are exposed by multiple sources in our environment without even knowing it. Toxic metals such as cadmium, arsenic, lead and cooper are also a great concern worldwide. A recent study found exposure to these heavy metals is linked to an increased risk for heart disease even if exposure is relatively low. It’s important to note that exposure is common and it is almost ignored by cardiovascular disease prevention programs, according to study authors. If you are using e-cigarettes, for example, you are at risk due to the heating coil. These heating coils may have toxins that contain heavy metals that may include lead, cadmium and nickel which have been associated with increase risk in heart disease and cancer. As numerous studies prove, exposure to toxins causes cells to die, affecting overall health by triggering disease and speeding up the aging process. As a functional medicine practice, Bellissimo Medical offers specialized testing and is equipped to initiate detoxification treatment if toxins are confirmed. Although awareness and exercising caution are important, it is hard to control environmental pollutants. One promising solution is the use of glutathione, an antioxidant that is particularly helpful in detoxifying the body and combating cell damage. Unfortunately, as we age we slow down production of this substance, but can boost it with supplementation. As always, be sure to work with a qualified professional if you suspect you may have been exposed and need to detox from heavy metal contamination. Selfdiagnosis or taking over-the-counter supplements without medical advice is not the best option. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. ASK THE MAYOR

Davie Update

Crossword

BY MAYOR JUDY PAUL lligator sightings have increased in the town. May I remind you: if you see something say something. Call the Davie Police or the Fish and Wildlife Commission to report the location. There is a project plan to reroute a natural gas pipe line through the heart of Davie. Council has opposed it, but after seeing the explosions of one house after another in Boston as a result of gas leaks the attempt to reroute a gas line through Davie under major power lines is the craziest idea presented to us. Davie council agreed with me and we sent a harsh letter stating our negative reaction to such folly. Many times, these agencies don’t listen and continue on with their course of action. Here is the letter that was sent: “The Town of Davie Mayor and Councilmembers received the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC or Commission) notice of an environmental study involving construction and operation of facilities by the Florida Gas Transmission Company in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, Florida. In this Notice of Intent, Docket No. PF18-5-000, the Commission is requesting public input regarding the planned TurnpikePalmetto Road Relocation Project. At the August 1, 2018 Town Council meeting, Councilmembers discussed the project and unanimously voted against it, as they are deeply concerned with the negative environmental impact the project presents. Therefore, as instructed by the Town Council, I am submitting a formal written objection as part of the public participation process.” If you feel this is a concern, I urge you to send letters of opposition to: Ms. Kimberly D. Bose, Secretary, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission; 888 First Street NE Room 1A; Washington, DC 20426; or call directly at 202-502-8400. If worse comes to worse, I am prepared to go to the location with fellow council members and as many residents who wish to join us to do a protest against the pipeline. The safety and security of our community is paramount and I will not allow any corporation or person to put Davie in peril. I am more and more encouraged by the actions of our youth and their interest in getting involved in the workings of local government. I received a letter from Kaylee who suggested that we use some open space at Bergeron Park for a sand volleyball court. With agreement from council, I sent it to the Parks and Open Space Advisory Board for their review. If they make the recommendation we will move forward. I also met with Preston from Nova Middle and Vanessa from Davie Elementary who came up with a number of ideas to alleviate the traffic nightmare on 39th St and College Avenue during drop off and pick up at the schools. They have researched ways to make crosswalks safer and the roadways more conducive to the safety of the children. Of course, educating the adults to obey speed limits, not leaving their cars within the crosswalk and using common courtesy and patience is also necessary. Preston, Vanessa and Mrs. Gonzalez made a presentation to council on Oct. 3 which was well received. Our engineer will work on their suggestions with the county. The Public Affairs Academy has a record number of students interested in applying this year. They will be interning from Oct-April and learning firsthand how they are impacted by local government and how it works to improve the town making it the best place to live work and play. In recognition of October as Government month, I also met with several groups of students from local schools as part of their tour of town facilities.

hen a spouse is ordered to pay Permanent Alimony, it will terminate upon the re-marriage of the receiving spouse or the death of either party. Does that mean if one of the above conditions is not met alimony continues forever? Not necessarily. Florida law allows a party to modify or terminate an alimony obligation if there has been “a substantial change of circumstance.” A substantial change of circumstance requires an involuntary change which could not be anticipated at the time of the Final Judgment. Therefore, if someone voluntarily reduces his income, by quitting a job or switching to one which pays less, he cannot seek a modification. The above would be considered a voluntary change, which is not cause for a reduction. Can an individual who is paying alimony voluntarily retire and either reduce or terminate his alimony obligation? Retirement, unless it’s a mandatory retirement, is voluntary. Does a person paying alimony have to work until he dies? The answer is no! A person has the right to retire, but only under certain circumstances. The courts have ruled that a person can retire at an age which is customary in the industry in which he is employed. There are court cases which approve retirement at 55 for a law enforcement officer who is eligible after 30 years of service. There are court cases which state that a person cannot retire until he reached normal retirement age, generally considered to be over 65. Therefore, every situation is different based upon the circumstances. Just because a person retires doesn’t necessarily mean that alimony terminates. It may mean that alimony will not terminate, but be reduced according to the income the paying spouse will be receiving during retirement. The court needs to consider the not only the ability to pay but the continuing needs of the receiving spouse. The court cannot leave either party in poverty. An individual’s assets can also be taken into consideration. There have been two recent opinions from the Appellate courts concerning this issue. In one case, the receiving spouse argued that retirement would always be an anticipated event and therefore should not be the basis of a downward modification. The appellate court rejected that argument stating that their Marital Settlement Agreement did not address the issue of retirement. In another case, the appellate court allowed the trial judge to consider the fact that the wife, upon reaching the age of fifty-nine and a half; could access retirement accounts without a penalty in considering a request by the Husband for a downward modification. As you can see there is no definitive rule as to this issue, and each case must be considered individually. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

REAL ESTATE

Bringing Your “A” Game When Selling Your Home BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR ring Your ‘A’ Game” is a common expression in athletics which means to arrive with your top attitude and ability because with today’s competition we are going to need it. In life, every day is game day. You simply cannot achieve your goals with a “B” effort. In Real Estate, every day is game day – especially when you are the Seller. Even though certain prices are more desirable and seemingly fly off the shelf, my colleagues and I have seen a slow-down of the South

Florida market. Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist, states: “The reason sales are falling off last year’s pace is that multiple years of inadequate supply in markets with strong job growth have finally driven up home prices to a point where an increasing number of prospective buyers are unable to afford it.” In this type of market, a seller may hold a major negotiating advantage when it comes to price and other aspects of the real estate transaction, including the inspection, appraisal and financing contingencies. For a while now, baby boomers have been blamed for a portion of the housing market’s current lack of housing inventory. Aaron Terrazas, Senior Economist at Zillow, says that “Boomers are healthier and working longer than previous generations, which means they aren’t yet ready to sell their homes.” According to a study by Realtor.com, 85% of baby boomers indicated they were not planning to sell their homes. Lack of inventory drives up home prices. Add rising interest rates and there may be cause for a market slow down. Recent reports tell us that the older population grew from 3 million in 1900 to 47.8 million in 2017. In addition, the Census recently revised the numbers from their National Population Projections: “The aging of baby boomers means that within just a couple decades, older people are projected to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history . . . By 2035, there will be 78.0 million people 65 years and older compared to 76.7 million under the age of 18.” All this means, if you are selling your home, hire a professional who will make recommendations on staging and right pricing as well as maximum digital and print exposure. Homes that are staged create the vision for the potential buyers and sell more quickly for the highest price. When the home is staged and showcases that the owners maintained the home or fixed up the home to sell, buyers may make multiple offers – resulting in possible bids over and above asking price. With rising interest rates and few homes on the market as of now, this is the time to obtain a market value report on your home from a professional. Free aggregators may not take into consideration all that you have done to your home which can help you get top dollar. You may want to take advantage of the lack of inventory and rising home prices. Hiring a professional will help you bring your “A” game to your home sale.
