Hurricane Season is Here Again
2
017 was, by far, the costliest hurricane season in United States history. More than $282 billion of damages were caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Many of us in South Florida are still feeling the impacts of Hurricane Irma. The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, especially in Puerto Rico, will have long consequences. Fortunately, 2018 is expected to be less active than 2017. Colorado State University hurricane researchers predict the 2018 hurricane season to be slightly more active than normal, with a predicted 14 named storms in the Atlantic basin. This is a far cry from last year’s two and half times more active environment.
It Only Takes One Storm According to the Tropical Cyclone Landfall Probabilities tool developed by researchers from Bridgewater State University and Colorado State, Broward County has about a 35% chance of having a hurricane make landfall this year and about a one in five chance of a major hurricane making landfall. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ▸▸ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ▸▸ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information and water. ▸▸ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in the case you lose power and water supply. ▸▸ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer. Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

Touch-A-Truck Event Appeals to Kids of All Ages BY DEBBY TEICH

o your kids like police cars, fire engines and construction trucks? On June 23, children will have an opportunity to get up close, sit behind the wheel, honk the horn, and explore their favorite vehicles they see on the road every day at the Annual City of Cooper City Touch-A-Truck event. Over 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, from 9am to noon, at the Cooper City Sports Complex, located on the corner of Stirling Rd. and Palm Avenue. Admission is free. “Trucks and services vehicles are known to captivate the attention of little ones,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “This event provides an opportunity for children and their families to see them up close as well as discover new vehicles. We even try to bring in specialized vehicles with story’s behind. For example, last year we had a secret service vehicle that was used to drive around a former President. This is a special event and we are fortunate enough to have a great relationship with our local law enforcement, as well as our Fire Department who contribute to Touch-A-Truck’s success.
Last year, there were nearly 40 trucks and vehicles on display from a variety of governmental agencies and private collectors. Fire and Police Departments provided SWAT, Hazmat equipment trucks, a Smart car with Macie (the BSO search dog), an air boat, police fleet services, fire paramedics and fire trucks, including a restored fire truck that the children were allowed to paint. Members of the Public Works and Utilities Departments were present and Waste Management showed kids how a dump truck crushes the trash. There was a lawn mower, blower, pressure washer, and front end loader, as well as a Publix freezer semi, seven military vehicles, Eloise the musical fire engine and more. Organizers are expecting similar vehicles this year. Children will also have an opportunity to enjoy a variety of fun activities, such as a bounce house, obstacle course, rock wall, coloring, and face painting. Organizers are still looking for companies that want to display their vehicles. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For information or to display a vehicle, call 954-434-4300, ext. 233 or send an email to ftrainor@coopercityfl.org.

child’s first fishing experience often remains in their memory for life. On June 2, Davie children will trade their electronics for fishing rods as they spend some quality time with their parents, grandparents and friends at the 36th Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo at the Davie Golf and Country Club, 8201 Nova Drive in Davie. Registration is from 7am to 8am on the morning of the Rodeo. “The Rodeo is a good way for kids to get in some fishing practice and have the chance to win some great prizes,” said Jeffrey Pohlman, Town of Davie Assistant Parks and Recreation Director. “Seeing the excitement on kids’ faces when they catch that first fish always makes the event so much fun.” There is a $10 fee/child to participate, which includes lunch, bait (live red worms), and event t-shirt for the first 200 kids to register. There is no advanced registration. Extra live red worms will be available for sale or you can bring your own. Kids need to bring their own fishing poles. All children must be accompanied
by an adult throughout the event. Children are permitted to fish from 8am to 10am. Prizes will be awarded in three age groups: 5 and under, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. When the kids catch a fish, they will bring it to the judges table, where a volunteer will help to identify, measure, and unhook the fish before releasing it back into the water. The Kiwanis Club of Davie and West Hollywood always provides assistance with this event by volunteering their time to be judges. They also pay the entry fee for several underprivileged children in the community. Prizes will be awarded in all age groups for the length of the fish (not for its weight). Some of the prizes include fishing rods and reels, tackle boxes and trophies. The categories include: ▸▸ Most fish caught over 3 inches ▸▸ Longest bass caught ▸▸ Longest fish caught (not a bass) ▸▸ Most unusual catch ▸▸ Sportsmanship award

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. SI Davie Selects Live Your Dream and Youth Leadership Winners BY DEBBY TEICH
S
oroptimist International of Davie (SI Davie) recently recognized and honored outstanding organizations and women in the community who are making a difference. Soroptimist is an international volunteerservice organization for business and professional women who work together to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. Established in 1983, the Davie chapter has approximately 50 members that meet at Pembroke Lakes Country Club at noon, on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.
(l to r): Dianne Aucamp, Carmen Colon, Jennifer Colon, Sue Greenawalt, Ana Hurtado
Live Your Dream Award The Live Your Dream Award provides financial education assistance for women who are the primary source of support for their families and are working to overcome obstacles to success in their lives though education and training. There were two winners. Jennifer Colon is a single mother of two children. She is currently enrolled at Chamberlain University seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Colon hopes to become a trauma nurse once she graduates. She is a cohort leader for her graduating class and an office member of the student government. She received a $2,500 award paid directly to Chamberlain University.
“Whatever you’re meant to do, do it now,” said Colon. “Obstacles always seem impossible. Stay resilient. Don’t give up and live your dream!” Ana Hurtado is a single mother of four children. She is currently enrolled at Broward College seeking an Associate’s Degree in Human Services/Behavioral Sciences. She received a $2,500 award paid directly to Broward College. “The Live Your Dream award has opened up the road for many opportunities that I would not have otherwise,” said Hurtado.
Youth Leadership Award The SI Davie Youth Leadership Award provides a monetary gift to an outstanding high school female youth and the charitable organization where she works as a volunteer. This year’s award winner was
Gabriella Carter of Miramar High School. She received a cash award of $500, as well as a check of $250 given in her name to the school’s HOPE Club. Gabriella lost three friends to gun violence and a cousin to a drunk driver. Searching for an escape from her depression, she stumbled upon the Broward Youth Coalition with the United Way, where she became an active leader. She coordinated the foundation of a new club at Miramar High School, the HOPE Sunshine Club: Helping Overcome Problems Effectively. The club’s mission is to educate, support, and develop problem solving, coping and leadership skills, while fostering the prevention of suicide, bullying and substance abuse. Through these organizations, Gabriella has made a tremendous impact on raising drug, substance, suicide and mental health awareness. “I joined HOPE because of the message it perpetuates,” said Gabriella. “The name itself reflects the strong sense of community and support that every member feels. It raises awareness of issues often overlooked and deemed too taboo to talk about in society: mental health and suicide. It taught me so much about myself, my feelings, and how to truly help others to ensure that they’re okay emotionally.” For information, visit www.sidavie.org. New members are always welcome.

Zona Horton Knows South Florida Real Estate
T
BY DEBBY TEICH
oday’s buyers and sellers need a trusted resource that can guide them through the complex world of real estate. With over 33 years of experience and hundreds of successful transactions, Zona has represented buyers and sellers in most areas of South Florida, including Davie, Cooper City and the surrounding areas. She focuses on getting sellers the highest prices for their homes in the shortest amount of time – without the stress. As a member of Keller Williams Realty, she works closely with a team of experts that represent the best and brightest in the industry. Together they ensure that clients receive the top-quality service they deserve. They are always striving to lead the field in research, innovation, and consumer education. With Zona’s extensive knowledge and commitment to providing only the best and most timely information to her clients, she is your go-to source for real estate industry insight and advice. Zona Horton, P.A., Realtor, answered some commonly asked questions about her real estate business. What is the secret to your success? I am successful, because this is a FULL-TIME CAREER for me. I am available to work with buyers and sellers seven days a week. I constantly stay on top of all of the facts and trends regarding real estate. What is your philosophy? My philosophy is simple: clients come first. I pledge to be in constant communication with my clients, keeping
them fully informed throughout the entire buying or selling process. I believe that if you’re not left with an amazing experience, I haven’t done my job. I don’t measure success through achievements or awards, but through the satisfaction of my clients. How do you know the South Florida market so well? I am a native South Floridian, so I know South Florida Real Estate inside and out. I remember when interested rates were 18% and we could not give away a condominium. It has been an interesting journey working the unpredictable, yet remarkable, South Florida market. What areas are your focus? I have sold and resold Broward County, including Davie, Cooper City, The Ranches, Weston, East Ft. Lauderdale, Coral Springs, Parkland and more. With over 33 years of experience and hundreds of successful transactions, I have represented buyers and sellers in every market. How do you help clients with buying or selling a home? I understand that buying or selling a home is more than just a transaction: it’s a lifechanging experience. That’s why my team of highly-seasoned real estate professionals is dedicated to providing exceptional, personalized service for all of my clients. I take great pride in the relationships I build and always work relentlessly on the client’s behalf to help them achieve their real estate goals. What is some advice for sellers? Selling your home doesn’t just mean hiring a realtor to stick a sign out
front. There are a lot of preparations you should make to ensure you get the best offer possible in the shortest time. Make repairs to the interior and exterior. Just because you’ve gotten used to the cracks in the walls, doesn’t mean a buyer will too. Neutralize to help prospective buyers imagine all the possibilities. You want buyers to see themselves in your home. Once your house is clean, stage your home by adding small details and décor touches that will bring out the possibilities in the various spaces in your home. What are some home-buying tips? I like to guide homebuyers through the process and offer many tips along the way. These are the top five. Get your finances in order. Find a house you can afford. Hire a professional. Do your homework. Think long term. How do you help buyers set a price? Every seller wants to maximize the net proceeds when selling his/her home, which is why it is important to list the house at a fair price and not overprice. Many homeowners think that pricing their home a little OVER market value will leave room for negotiation. In most cases, my colleagues will use your home to sell the one down the street that is priced at market. Instead of the sellers trying to “win” the negotiation with one buyer, they should price it so that demand for the home is maximized. By doing this, the seller will not be fighting with a buyer over the price. Instead, the seller will have multiple buyers fighting with each other over the house. Is the MLS listing always accurate? Whether there is a room that was “stated” as a bedroom in the MLS or a spa that was tagged as a swimming pool, I can assess what you are purchasing and create a market analysis based on the truth of what you have seen and are considering to purchase. I can quickly assess whether the MLS printout is in line with the actual product being presented and point out the “not so obvious.” Will this market ever slow down? No one knows. During the “bubble,” many homeowners walked away from their homes after drowning in their predatory loans. These “walkaway” homeowners realized the
Zona Horton
equity they walked away from and are not ready to re-enter the real estate market. This is a contributing factor to the shortage. Regardless, buyers need to “jump in” – even if it means not getting everything on their “wish lists.” Build the equity, sell, then move on up! What advantage does Keller Williams Realty have over other real estate companies? Keller Williams Realty offers agents extensive education and marketing programs. It is a leader in national and international marketing, promoting their agents and our listings across the globe. Do you offer a free analysis to determine the worth of someone’s home? Yes. I would happily offer a free market evaluation.

Davie Elementary Students Celebrate the Environment BY DEBBY TEICH
I
n celebration of Arbor Day and Earth Day, the Town of Davie recently partnered with various Davie schools to promote the preservation of our trees and natural resources. As part of the effort, the Town sponsored a poster and essay contest. Using this year’s theme, “The Benefits of Trees,” the students were asked to represent (write and draw) how important trees are to the environment. They were awarded prizes for first, second and third place in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. Davie Elementary participated with approximately 100 students, from kindergarten to third grade, Several dignitaries from the Town of Davie attended, including Mayor Judy Paul, Councilmember Caryl Hattan, Public Works and Capital Projects Director Osdel FernandezLarrea, and Urban Forrester Tim Lee. They spoke to the students about the importance of trees and the positive impact they have on the environment and the ecosystem. Together, they planted a native Satinleaf tree and did a variety of other tree-related activities. The Florida Forest Service brought firefighting equipment for the kids to try out. The students also got to visit with Smokey Bear. “As a retired teacher, I am always excited when I get an opportunity to teach students about the benefits of trees in our Town and our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Paul. “Trees are not only aesthetically beautiful, but they also boost the vitality of the environment and encourage wildlife. It was very interesting to see how eager the students were to help us plant trees on their school campus.” “I place a high value on trees, as I can see the important role they play through-
out the Town in enhancing the quality of life, improving our landscape, and providing peace of mind,” said Councilmember Hattan. “Children are very receptive to learning and it’s great that we were invited to dialogue with them about trees in our environment.” For the 27th consecutive year, the Town of Davie received a plaque for being named a 2017 Tree City USA recipient by the Arbor Day Foundation. This prestigious award recognizes the Town’s commitment to effective urban forestry management. Davie achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

They were selected to represent the United States in the FIRST LEGO League Estonian Open International, out of a pool of 17,778 U.S. teams. They will compete against 100 teams from 80 different countries. The three girls - Sabrina Califano, Helen Ribas and Alicia Ramirez - have been friends for many years and decided to form a team. They participated in the Pine Crest Qualifying Tournament, where they won the Best Project Award and a bid to the South Florida FIRST LEGO League Regional Championship. At the Regional Championship in February, the team won the Robot Mechanical Design Award. They also received a bid to the 2018 State of Florida FIRST LEGO League Championship, and a bid to attend the FIRST LEGO League Estonian Open International. FIRST LEGO League teams research a real-world problem and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS, then compete on a table-top playing field. I
t’s time to be thinking about high school graduation, final exams, proms and all the festivities that go with the end of another school year. Let us not forget those whose young and vibrant bodies will not be joining these happy moments. Give pause to pray for their families and friends and take a moment to reflect on your own experiences in life that kept you safe and secure in a world of turmoil and unexpected danger. No matter your station in life, your family circumstances, or your ability to learn, we all deserve the right and the opportunity to carry out our dreams. God speed to those precious children who have been taken from us too soon because of an act of terror, a reckless driver, a poor decision or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Give the living the strength to carry on in their absence and to strive to make this a better world. The Town of Davie is taking applications for the 2018 Sustainability Awards. IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
Gecko ParX Brings the Next Generation of Indoor Entertainment to South Florida BY STACEY BOMSER
G
ecko ParX appeals to the young and the young at heart. The 40,000 square-foot indoor entertainment center caters to children of all ages, families and corporate clients. From fun family outings and children’s birthday parties to conferences and team-building retreats, Gecko ParX is unlike any other venue. Founder John Duran explains more about the Gecko ParX concept and what you can expect to find there. What is Gecko ParX? We are South Florida’s newest indoor entertainment venue where you can jump, play, practice, compete and, most importantly, have fun. Gecko ParX offers 40,000 square-feet of exciting attractions including a trampoline court with interlocking trampolines, basketball slam dunk courts, ropes courses, dodgeball courts, an American Ninja course, parkour, rock climbing, multi-attraction pit for jousting and slackline, a children’s soft play area, and much more. In addition, we offer an arcade with state-of-the-art games, café, and seven private party rooms offering 180-degree waterfront views. It’s truly an unbelievable experience. Please describe the facility. Gecko ParX was created for all demographics, including all ages and genders. It is a heart-pounding experience for clients who enjoy physical activities and want to participate in our ten different attractions. There is also a mezzanine deck created exclusively for adults who want to enjoy a more relaxed ambiance. They can plug in a laptop, relax with a beer or glass of wine, and watch the jumpers enjoy the attractions. The mezzanine area not only provides a panoramic view of the entire facility, but it also accommodates massage chairs and relaxing mood lighting below the deck. Gecko ParX was custom designed so all ages can enjoy this one-of-a-kind facility. How was Gecko ParX designed for different demographics? My main purpose in creating this concept was to create a place for everyone to enjoy. Gecko ParX offers a soft play area for toddlers, as well as ten actionpacked attractions designed for kids, teens and adults.
There is even an area that turns into a dance floor with a live DJ, ideal for our teen socials as well as private functions. The mezzanine deck, complete with massage chairs and bar stools overlooking the facility, is the perfect place for adults to relax and unwind. What is your background? I have 25 years of experience as an owner/operator in the family entertainment industry. I was the cofounder of Riptide Entertainment, which owned and operated several Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museums. I also sit on the advisory boards of multiple companies within the family entertainment and technology sectors. My years of experience and passion for family entertainment motivated me to open Gecko ParX, a venue that appeals to all ages where the entire family can enjoy time together. How do you ensure customer safety? Safety is a top priority at Gecko ParX. Our welltrained staff supervise each section of the facility to provide assistance on how to properly use the attractions in a safe manner. Each staff member has received crowd management training and is specifically trained and certified for each attraction. The trampoline and soft play equipment are top of the line and made in the United States under strict quality standards. We adhere to a 250 pound per person weight limit to utilize our attractions. In addition, all participants must complete a waiver. Why should someone host their next event or party at Gecko ParX? This facility was created to host top-shelf events and parties. Our seven, oversized private party rooms, with 180-degree water views, make Gecko ParX stand out from all other venues. The space is set up for mixed usage, as it can host a child’s birthday party as well as corporate events. The modern layout, with its diverse and pleasant ambiance, can accommodate events ranging from ten to more than 500 guests. Gecko ParX takes pride in providing the highest level of customer satisfaction. Our event planner’s unparalleled sense of urgency and diligence, coupled with our party hosts’ customer service skills, ensure all events are a success and all guests have the best time possible. What types of party or group packages do you offer? Whether you are celebrating a Sweet 16, graduation, or any other event, we can customize a package just for you. Birthday party packages start at just $350
and include one hour of jump time plus 45-minutes in a private party room. Gecko ParX provides pizza and unlimited water and soda. Our party host will take care of all the details, including all set-up and clean-up. We also offer customized packages for corporate events and special occasions. Besides the attractions, what types of programs do you offer? We offer ninja training classes taught by Julio Santiago, who was featured on the TV show American Ninja Warrior. We also provide personal training in parkour. Other programs include Mommy & Me, for mothers or caregivers with children from six-months to three years of age, and Tumble Tots. These professionally designed classes will help stimulate and encourage babies and toddlers to use all their senses while playing, exploring, crawling and learning in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. In addition, we offer a variety of evening programs for older kids. On Parents Night Out, we offer three hours of full activities and supervised fun for children ages six to twelve. We also host Teen Socials on select Friday nights for ages 13 to 18. Teens can enjoy access to all the attractions plus dancing with a live DJ. How much does Gecko ParX cost? We offer a variety of passes and promotions. The onehour pass offers access to seven attractions (trampoline, dodgeball, basketball, ninja course, parkour, slackline and jousting) for $19.99, while the two-hour pass is only $24.99. A rock climbing pass is $4.99, while the ropes course pass is $9.99. Our Ultimate Pass, for $45.99, offers two-hours of access to all nine attractions, as well as a $10 arcade card. For little ones, under 42-inches, we offer an all-day soft play pass for only $9.99. Be sure to check out our website, www. GeckoParx.com/tickets, for special promotions. What is the significance of the name Gecko ParX? When my family moved to South Florida from San Francisco two years ago, I was astonished by the many different types of reptiles we encountered. So, when brainstorming a name for the business, I thought of Gecko ParX. n Gecko ParX is conveniently located at 3305 Corporate Avenue in Weston, between Royal Palm Boulevard and Griffin Road. Gecko ParX is open every day except Monday. It offers daytime and evening hours; 10-11am is reserved for children less than 42 inches tall. For more information visit www. Are You Suffering From Nutritional Deficiencies? BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP
T
he purpose of functional medicine is to find the root of disease and prevent future ailments. Because the focus is on prevention, food is a key component in leading a healthy, disease-free life. Many patients are overly aware of the link between nutrition and weight, but keep in mind we don’t eat foods just to regulate our weight; our food intake does so much more than that. Food is directly responsible for many of the processes that take place inside our bodies. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, nutrition plays a role in five out the 10 leading causes of death. Several scientific studies have associated high intake of fat, sodium, and sugar to disease and death. It is no secret that Type 2 Diabetes is on the rise and millions of Americans are on medicine to control high cholesterol. The basic macronutrients found in food are protein, carbohydrates and fats. Your body needs and utilizes these micronutrients for metabolic activity, energy production, hormone production and much more. These also add up to your daily calories and determine whether you maintain, gain or lose weight. In addition to macronutrients, your body absorbs micronutrients, which include vitamins and minerals, and we also need these to live and thrive. Not getting enough macro and micronutrients will cause nutritional deficiencies that can lead to serious illness. When it comes to weight loss, the equation is simple - calories in vs calories out. However, not all calories are created equal. It is possible for a person to consume an adequate number of calories to maintain or even lose weight, but this doesn’t mean the person is healthy or has adequate nutrition. If you eat a bag of chips a day, you will probably lose weight because you are on a caloric deficit, but are your nutritional needs being met? The answer is no. By the same token, it is possible for a person to consume excess calories and be overweight—this still doesn’t mean nutritional needs are being met. Food quality makes all the difference in the world. And whether you have a healthy weight or are obese, you may still be suffering from nutritional deficiencies. What’s also important to consider is that nutritional deficiencies do not happen from one day to the next. Chances are these have been developing over periods of time before you start to see the signs. Some common signs of nutritional deficiencies include: ▸▸ Fatigue ▸▸ Dry/Brittle skin ▸▸ Hair loss ▸▸ Diarrhea ▸▸ Constipation ▸▸ Dry/brittle and Ridged or spoonshaped nails ▸▸ Weak immune system ▸▸ Inability to focus ▸▸ Depression and anxiety The good news is that nutritional deficiencies can be corrected by implementing changes in your diet. Eating unprocessed foods - whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds - is a good way to start. In some cases, supplementation may be needed. At Bellissimo Medical, we can conduct specialized testing to determine if you are suffering from nutritional deficiencies or specific health issues in order to outline a customized treatment plan that is most likely to help you improve your health. Can Chewing Gum Prevent Cavities in Your Child? BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN
O
ver the last five decades, fluoride has been added to community water supplies across the country. As a result, we have seen a 50% reduction of cavities in these communities, as well as a 50% reduction in the dental healthcare costs for children. The numbers are even higher when its use is combined with proper diet, oral hygiene techniques, and use of topical fluorides. Still, the dental community searches for other methods of reducing the incidence of “caries” (cavities). Such a finding would be most helpful to those unable or unwilling to make use of fluoride. One of the more promising substances is xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute derived from agricultural products. It has been around since the 1960’s, but has not been tested for use in humans for the purpose of oral health until the 1990’s. Most of the studies use chewing gum as the delivery system of choice. Optimal results are gained with three daily uses. This dosing achieves a reduction in plaque formation, reduces acid production, and interferes with the production of the specific bacteria which initiate cavity formation. Cumulatively, these attributes result in cavity reduction. What seems most promising is the use of xylitol by new parents to reduce cavity formation in their newborns. Babies are not born with the bacteria which cause cavities. These bacteria are naturally transmitted to the mouth of a child by a parent or caregiver. This usually occurs through everyday contact such as sharing of food or blowing on a hot spoon. The use of xylitol has been shown to delay the transmission of some of the most deleterious bacteria and resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities for these children. In one particular study, xylitol chewing by mothers beginning three months after the delivery of a child for a period of two years resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities in the children till an average age of six years. Of course, with such positive results many new xylitol products have been launched into the marketplace. Companies are manufacturing a number of products such as mints, mouthwash and toothpaste. However, the only method of delivery clinically proven to have these effects is chewing gum. Personally, I can’t wait to bite into the first xylitol infused ice cream sundae! The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. REAL ESTATE
Home Ownership Builds Your Family’s Wealth BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR
O
ver the next five years, home prices are expected to appreciate, on average, by 3.6% per year and to grow by 18.2% cumulatively, according to Pulsenomics’ most recent Home Price Expectation Survey. According to the new survey, only 26% of the people surveyed were optimistic about their home values and the new tax laws that were recently put into place. So, what does this mean for homeowners and their equity position? According to Steve Harney, national prognosticator, if a home closed for $250,000 in January of 2018, the projected equity over the next five years would be $48,314. Since the experts predict that home prices will increase by 5.0% in 2018, the young homeowners will have gained $12,500 in equity in just one year. What other financial vehicle could allow a working family to achieve that kind of increase? The bottom line is that rising prices help you build your family’s wealth. Home equity is one of the largest portions of a family’s overall net worth. What about Davie? There were 253 homes currently active on the market ranging in price from $117,000 to $4 million. The median-priced active is a five-bedroom, three-bath, home with 3,808 square feet, listed at $895,000 (which is $244.08 a square foot). This home has been on the market 60 days. The median-priced sold home was a four-bedroom, two-bath home, with 2,156 square feet. It was listed at $437,000 ($213.25 a square foot), sold for $422,000 ($208.41 per square foot) and on the market for 37 days. Historically. The closed median-priced home five years ago in Davie was a fourbedroom, two-bath, home with 2,159 square feet. It was listed at $315,000 ($146.36 per square foot), sold for $300,000 ($142.08 per square foot) and was on the market for 55 days. Davie Recap Median Home: Price Per Square Foot (Sold) Five Years Ago $142.08 Today $208.41 Increase of 46.68% What about Cooper City? There were only 79 homes currently active on the market, ranging in price from $224,800 to $1.8 million. The median-priced active is a four-bedroom, three-bath home with 2,740 square feet, listed at $549,998 (which is $219.19 a square foot). This home has been on the market 46 days. The median-priced sold home was a four-bedroom, two-bath home, with 1,945 square feet. It was listed for $410,000 ($211.23 a square foot), sold for $393,000 ($205.01 per square foot) and on the market for 27 days. Historically. The closed median-priced home five years ago in Cooper City was a three-bedroom, two-bath, home with 2,350 square feet. It was listed at $340,000 ($145.61 per square foot), sold for $320,000 ($142.51 per square foot) and was on the market for 67 days. Cooper City Recap Median Home: Price Per Square Foot (Sold) Five Years Ago $142.51 Today $205.01 Increase of 43.86% Seeing that homeownership builds wealth, now may be the time to upsize your investment. Historically speaking, the median-priced homes increased by the same increment! Have you lived in your home for more than five years? Regardless, it may be time for you to take stock in your equity! IT IS THE POLICY OF THIS STATE TO ENCOURAGE THE PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF DISPUTES AND THE EARLY RESOLUTION OF PENDING LITIGATION THROUGH A VOLUNTARY SETTLEMENT PROCESS” The above quote is from the Florida Collaborative Law Process Act. It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique nonadversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation.” There are some definite rules that must be followed and not every case is suited for the collaborative process. “As part of this nonadversarial and voluntary resolution of disputes, lawyers who engage in the collaborative law process in a family law matter, and any other lawyers in that lawyer’s firm, may not afterwards represent any party in any related proceeding except to request that a court approve the settlement reached during the collaborative law process or in specified emergency situations in accordance with family law court rules.” As stated above, if for some reason the collaborative process “breaks down” and litigation becomes the only alternative, the collaborative attorney must withdraw from representing his/her client. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. The goal of the collaborative process is for both parties and their respective attorneys to act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances there are other “team members,” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and, therefore, the parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” on more than one occasion. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process; each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery; and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney,” there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. As in all matters of law, experience and training are always beneficial to a client. If you or anyone you know are interested in the Collaborative Process, please give my office a call. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

t’s not easy work, but there is no other career in the world as rewarding as public safety. Countless individuals across the country and here in Broward County diligently serve in public safety, dedicating their lives to keep our communities safe and making a difference daily, both big and small. And now you can, too! The Broward Sheriff’s Office is looking for a few good women and men to join our team as law enforcement deputies. At BSO, serving and protecting is not just a job description; it is a way of life. These deputies serve in numerous positions, including road patrol deputy, criminal investigations detective and in our special units. And as the largest fully accredited public service agency in the country, there are numerous career advancement opportunities as well. Make no mistake. Serving as a law enforcement officer comes with tremendous responsibility. At BSO, your job is more than just stopping crime – it is also connecting with our communities and forging lasting relationships with the diverse communities we serve. You will be equipped with rigorous training to handle every scenario with professionalism, but also be required to bring a solid work ethic, sound reasoning and temperament and embrace BSO’s commitment to community policing, accountability and transparency.

We are also seeking to fill the ranks in our Department of Detention. Each day, these men and women are charged with maintaining order and discipline among detainees in our jails - the 12th largest jail system in the country - and also with ensuring the safety of the detainees, the public and other law enforcement and detention personnel. As rehabilitation is a top priority at BSO, detention deputies also have the unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of detainees because of their close and frequent interactions with prisoners. Want to be part of BSO, but not sure becoming a sworn officer is the best fit for you? We also are looking for more individuals to join our team in the critically important positions of E911 Communications operators and Child Protective Investigations Section (CPIS) investigators. Communications operators are the lifeline between the community and first responders, and our CPIS investigators dedicate their careers to ensuring our community’s children are safe and secure. Aside from the rewarding work you will perform, BSO also offers competitive salaries, outstanding work environment and competitive benefits (including low-cost medical insurance, retirement pension and generous time off) plus numerous opportunities for advancement. Equally important, you are not just an employee at BSO - you are part of our BSO family of over 5,600 employees. You could be part of our BSO family. Join me and the rest of the BSO team by visiting jobs.sheriff.org.
