Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Yasmin or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at: WindmillHealth@att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

It’s Time to Go Back to School

S

ummer is coming to an end even earlier this year! August 15th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. So, for parents, that means it is time to stock up on school supplies, help your child pick out that lucky lunch box, and remind him or her to finish their summer reading list.

FAMILY & GERIATRIC MEDICINE

It’s also time to register for after school enrichment programs. There are a myriad of different activities and opportunities, with everything from sports to music and everything in between. Parents also have choices in how their kids are educated. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, a parent must now decide between enrolling their child at their local school, charter school, private school or online learning. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational and enrichment programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to language lessons to Little League. The material has been curated to provide parents with a useful guide to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year. In the meantime, enjoy the last couple weeks of summer break. We’ll be back to school before you know it. Sincerely,

We Accept Medicare, All Commercial Plans and Marketplace Insurances.

Experience the Excitement of the Rodeo BY DEBBY TEICH

T

here are many reasons that Davie’s nickname is “Cowboy Town” and the rodeo is one of them. On September 8, thousands of rodeo fans will put on their finest cowboy boots and hats to experience the excitement of the Weekley Brothers Davie Pro Rodeo. It will be held at 7:30pm, at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. “We believe Rodeo is an American sport and reflects the cowboy heritage that all Americans love and are proud to be a part of,” said Troy Weekley. Davie’s rodeo performances typically attract over 5,000 people, including some that are first time attendees and others that dedicated fans who never miss a show. The rodeo begins with a colorful grand entry, as the cowboys and cowgirls parade on horseback. Next, the announcer welcomes guests and honors fallen soldiers along with professional riders that are no longer with us. Once the competition begins, most audience members are on the edge of their seats. During bull riding, they watch as the chute opens and the cowboys/cowgirls attempt to ride for eight seconds. They also enjoy the excitement of steer wrestling, bronc riding, tie down roping, team roping and girls barrel racing.

“As a local, you become elated to be in attendance witnessing these passionate riders who risk everything to put on a show of a lifetime and win prize money right in your own neighborhood,” said Weekley. “The Weekley Brothers Davie Pro Rodeo offers these die-hard rodeo athletes an opportunity to rank up points and continue their passion.” This is the last rodeo in Davie this year until the

Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo, which will be held on November 8, 9 and 10. The cowboys and cowgirls compete throughout the year to earn enough points to qualify for the Circuit Finals. The top 12 Southeastern contestants in each event will be competing in saddle bronc, bareback, team roping, tie down roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing and bull riding. They will be vying for over $200,000 in prize money and awards. Davie is the ideal setting for a rodeo, since much of Davie’s architectural style is modeled after the American West. The original Davie Rodeo Arena was built in 1946 by a few local cowboys and some neighborhood residents. The arena was expanded to meet the growing demand for a more versatile venue. Today, the Davie Arena on the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds is a 72,000 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor facility. It is the site for several rodeos, top name concert entertainers, horse shows, dog shows, car shows, air boat shows, specialty shows, industrial shows and more. n For information, visit www.davieprorodeo.com or visit Facebook for updates, highlights, and photos of past rodeo events. Bergeron Rodeo Grounds are located at 4271 Davie Road in Davie.

Touch-A-Truck Event Appeals to Kids of All Ages BY DEBBY TEICH

M

any kids are fascinated by police cars, fire engines and construction trucks. They recently had an opportunity to get up close, sit behind the wheel, honk the horn, and explore their favorite vehicles they see on the road every day at the Annual City of Cooper City Touch-A-Truck event. Over 2,000 people attended the event at the Cooper City Sports Complex. “Trucks and services vehicles are known to captivate the attention of little ones,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “This event provides an opportunity for children and their families to see them up close, as well as discover new vehicles.” There were nearly 40 trucks and vehicles on display from a variety of governmental agencies and private collectors. Fire and Police Departments provided SWAT, Hazmat equipment trucks, a Smart car with Macie (the BSO search dog), an air boat, police fleet services, fire paramedics and fire trucks, including a restored fire truck that the children were allowed to paint. Members of the Public Works and Utilities Departments were present and Waste Management showed kids how a dump truck crushes the trash. There was a lawn mower, blower, pressure washer, and front end loader, as

well as a Publix freezer semi, seven military vehicles, Eloise the musical fire engine and more. One of the highlights of the event was when a US Coast Guard MH65 helicopter landed during the event. Children also had an opportunity to enjoy a variety of fun activities, such as a bounce house, obstacle course, rock wall, coloring, and face painting. n For information, visit www.CooperCityFL.org.

Davie Teen Earns Gold Award for “Bee Mindful” BY DEBBY TEICH

A

s a member of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida Troop #10424, Marie Brooks of Davie is dedicated to making the world a better place. She recently earned a Girl Scout Gold Award for her project, “Be Mindful.” She has joined the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference, both locally and globally. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout in grades 9-12 can earn. Scouts must complete a service

project with a minimum of 80 logged hours that fulfills a need in the community, creates change, and is sustainable with long-term possibilities. Fewer than 6% of all Girl Scouts in the world earn this prestigious award. “The Gold Award provides an opportunity for girls like me to not only help resolve an issue in our communities, but to grow and develop skills we would never get anywhere else,” said Marie. When Marie began brainstorming ideas for her project, she learned that a bumblebee species had been officially put on the endangered species list after its decline of 90% since the 1990s. In fact, all of the bee populations were in decline. “After a bit of research, I learned exactly how important pollinators are and how their decline will cause major issues not only in my community, but the entire world,” said Marie. “Bees are responsible for 75% of our food supply and contribute over $200 billion to our global economy. Their decline and eventual demise will destroy the lifestyles of humans as we know it.” Marie launched a wide range of information platforms in order to educate others about the importance of bees; limiting or eliminating the use of pesticides and insecticides that harm bees; and using organic, beefriendly products. She partnered with Secret Woods Nature Center in Ft. Lauderdale, where she displayed her “Bee Mindful” booth at four events and educated

members of the community. The booth also included a flower planting activity, where she showed children how simple it is to create a bee-friendly gardens with native plants that will promote population growth. She displayed a miniature beehive she built to show people how easy it is to become a backyard beekeeper. After the last event, she donated all of the materials to the nature center where the “Bee Mindful” project is still on display. In addition to her efforts at Secret Woods Nature Center, Marie presented her booth at Flamingo Road Nursery and Anne Kolb Nature Center; presented information about the Bumblebee decline to the Broward Beekeeper Association; and developed a brochure, blog (http://beemindfulproject.blogspot.com) and YouTube channel. Although this is Marie’s last year as an ambassador for the Girl Scouts, she says she will always stay involved. “I hope to spend my adult life volunteering with the Girl Scouts, so I can help give back to welcoming community that has already done so much for me,” said Marie. n To explore opportunities to volunteer or partner with Girl Scouts, call 561-427-0177 or visit www.gssef.org.

I

f you live in South Florida and have any interest in dance, the odds are pretty good you already know the name. With four Broward locations, including two serving Southwest Broward, Dance Theatre has become a prominent part of our community, one fabulous dancer at a time. Accolades? Of course. Dance Theatre has been awarded the prestigious “Reader’s Choice” and “Best in the West” awards multiple times. Trophies? Thousands. Dance Theatre’s elite team of competitive dancers, DTX, receives top awards and overall high scores at virtually every competition they attend. Testimonials? You bet. Just ask any mother in the carpool line and they’ll tell you that Dance Theatre has been like a home away from home for their children. So what is it that makes this place so special? “My answer is always the same,” says owner and Director Michelle Gerlick, “We build beautiful, safe, clean facilities, hire the best teachers in the business, and treat each child that walks through our doors as if they were our very own.” “Awards are nice, certainly, and our trophies are beautiful,” Michelle continues, “but that’s not what we strive for. We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it effectively. We train exceptional dancers, yes, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models that are so important to our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That is why we do this.” Michelle certainly has the pedigree to run one of the nation’s most successful dance programs. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, a June Taylor Dancer, and half of a performance duo, along with her husband Bob, which thrilled audiences the world

over working with the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Tony Bennett. Michelle holds both a degree in Dance from Ohio State University, and a degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern. Her professional credits include performing as a Miami Heat Dancer for the NBA, a “Fly Girl” on Fox Television’s In Living Color, and an NFL Super Bowl Choreographer and Dancer. Michelle has since led her students at Dance Theatre to The Summer Olympics, The Super Bowl, and The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, among countless other extraordinary venues. Still not convinced that Dance Theatre is THE place for your young dancer to train? Consider this...they offer a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 3 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline. They include the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, acrobatics, musical theater and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, etc. In addition, dancers who excel and aspire to become dance professionals may join either their performance company, DTC, which provides entertainment at amazing venues like Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins games, or their elite competitive team, DTX, where they can travel to local, regional and national conventions and hone their skills against the best from other schools. Under the direction of Danielle Mednick, the 2018 Onstage America Teacher & Choreographer of the Year, Team DTX has taken the Miss Junior, Miss Teen, and Miss Senior titles, and just returned from Nationals where they won the Challenge of Champions with their performance of “Secret Annex”. n For those interested in joining the Dance Theatre family, there are several ways. First, you can visit their web-site, www.dancetheatre.net, choose your location, view the Fall Schedule, and register online at any time by filling out the simple form. Second, you may call the studio at 954-423-4500 (for the Plantation Promenade location on Cleary Blvd. & Nob Hill Rd.) OR (954) 434-4443 (for the Southwest Ranches location in the Regency Square Publix on Griffin & 148th Ave.) and speak to someone today. Finally, if you prefer to register in person, you can visit the studios during Fall Registration Hours (listed in adjacent ad). Better hurry though, classes fill quickly!

Town of Davie Residents Celebrate July 4th BY DEBBY TEICH

O

nce again, Davie residents gathered to celebrate our nation’s birthday. They were surrounded by family, friends and neighbors at the Town of Davie’s Independence Day Fireworks and Family Fun Day. “Here in Davie, we take pride in celebrating our country’s independence - the various fun-filled family activities and events are just a small tribute to celebrate Independence Day,” said Jeff Pohlman, Assistant Director for Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts. “One of the most iconic aspects of our celebration is the fireworks, which is one of the best throughout Broward County.” The celebration began with Fun at the Pool at the Pine Island Pool. Activities included a free swim and inner tube water polo, as well as the Fun Foam Spray with the Davie Fire Department, dive-in treasure hunt and watermelon eating contest. The festivities continued at Pine Island Park, with activities that included games and rides for kids, a petting farm, face painters, craft vendors, adult zone with lawn games, kids’ interactive games, free cake, live music, fireworks and more.

Families Spend Quality Time Together at 36th Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo BY DEBBY TEICH

A

child’s first fishing experience often remains in their memory for life. Davie children recently traded their electronics for fishing rods as they spent some quality time with their parents, grandparents and friends at the 36th Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo at the Davie Golf and Country Club. “The Rodeo is a good way for kids to get in some fishing practice and have the chance to win some great prizes,” said Jeffrey Pohlman, Town of Davie Assistant Parks and Recreation Director. “Seeing the excitement on kids’ faces when they catch that first fish always makes the event so much fun.” The $10 fee included lunch, bait (live red worms), and t-shirt for the first 200 kids to register. Kids brought their own poles and fished for two hours. When the kids caught a fish, they brought it to the judges’ table, where a volunteer helped to

identify, measure, and unhook the fish before releasing it back into the water. The Kiwanis Club of Davie and West Hollywood provided assistance with this event by volunteering their time to be judges. They also payed the entry fee for several underprivileged children in the community. Prizes were awarded in three age groups: 5 and under, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. They included fishing rods and reels, tackle boxes and trophies. The categories were: most fish caught over 3 inches; longest bass caught; longest fish caught (not a bass); most unusual catch; and sportsmanship award. The Florida Gladesmen made a video from the event. To view it, visit, www. magisto.com/int/album/video n For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

“Sleep Out For Homelessness” Event Raises Awareness BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he 2nd Annual “Sleep Out for Homelessness” offers the public an opportunity to spend a night experiencing what it is like to trade their beds for a box and give up the luxuries of a comfortable mattress, clean sheets, A/C and a roof over their heads. Sponsored by Davie-based Showering Love, the event will be held on August 11, from 6pm to 6am, at the Walmart Supercenter, 4700 S. Flamingo Road, in Cooper City. “The intention is to connect to what it feels like to sleep as though we were homeless: the mosquitos, the rain, the noises and the uncertainty,” said Joe Trembly, vice president of Showering Love. “The experience of being exposed in the open tends to bring out the vulnerabilities that the participants are experiencing. Creating awareness is important for changing the conversation.” Trembly started Showering Love with Jeanne Lewis-Albaugh - both are formerly homeless. Through Showering Love, they have been working to help restore the dignity and hope of the homeless by meeting them where they are and providing essentials,

ASK THE SHERIFF

Risk Protection Orders: New Tool to Keep Broward Safe from Gun Violence BY SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL

B

roward County and all of Florida are safer today thanks to a new state law that gives law enforcement a valuable tool to prevent gun violence by helping keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who demonstrate an obvious threat to themselves or others. Florida joined a handful of states earlier this year when it passed the Risk Protection Order Act (RPO), or red flag law, spurred to much-needed action in response to the tragedy in Parkland. This important law, passed with bipartisan support in the state legislature, allows law enforcement to remove firearms and ammunition from violent or mentally ill individuals while affording citizens their due process. Already, this law is clearly proving its worth to law enforcement and the public. Since the passage of the law, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has made significant use of the RPO Act. Already, BSO has utilized RPOs dozens of times—more than any other county in the state. In April, BSO violent crimes detectives arrested a Deerfield Beach man, who was pending trial for attempted murder, for violating a risk protection order and removed an AR-15, a .22 caliber rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a bump stock and numerous other weapon-related items from his home. The arrest is believed to have been the first in the state for violation of an RPO. The process for obtaining an RPO is straightforward and puts the decision to remove guns in the hands of a judge. First, law enforcement files a petition listing the statement, actions or facts which give rise to a reasonable fear of significant dan-

gerous acts by respondent. The petition is heard by a Judge within 24 hours to determine if there is reasonable cause to believe the respondent poses a significant danger of causing personal injury to themselves or others in the near future by having in their custody any firearm or ammunition. If granted, the respondent is served with the temporary order, and they must immediately surrender their firearms, ammunition and concealed weapons license pending a final hearing. The judge will set the final hearing within 14 days, at which time law enforcement must present clear and convincing evidence that the person poses a significant danger of causing personal injury to themselves or others by having in their custody or control any firearm or ammunition, or by purchasing, possessing or receiving a firearm or ammunition. If granted, the final RPO is valid for one year. In order to extend the order, law enforcement would once again have to present evidence to the court that the person is still a threat to themselves or others. This is the type of common-sense gun measure for which I have long advocated. This law is intended solely to remove firearms from individuals who pose an obvious threat to themselves and others—not from law-abiding citizens. It balances public safety goals with the important rights afforded to citizens by the Second Amendment of the Constitution, as well as the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment right to due process. In fact, even gun rights organizations have voiced their support for these red flag laws. While this law is not the perfect solution to ending gun violence, it’s a gigantic step in the right direction, and we are all safer because of it. n For information, visit sheriff.org.

f you are tired of going to your primary care doctor’s office every few months to get a prescription refill for your current medical condition, it may be time to change doctors. Conventional medicine continues to deal with chronic illness by targeting symptoms without really taking the time to investigate what is causing the problem in the first place. This is the biggest difference between a traditional medical practice and the type of service you will find at a functional medicine office. Functional medicine focuses on the patient as a whole and not just on symptoms. Our mission is to study the patient’s medical history as well as family history and all possible factors that are contributing to disease so we can treat the root cause of the problem. It is all about recreating balance. Do not get me wrong. There are conditions that are so serious they must be addressed immediately, but this doesn’t mean we should ignore the origin of the disease. If we only treat symptoms and ignore the underlying causes, we enter a never-ending cycle of pill-popping that will eventually affect organs and other areas of health. If a patient comes in with high cholesterol, for example, we do need to immediately rush for the prescriptive medication to treat the condition, rather we need to investigate what is causing the anomaly. Is it the family history or the patient’s lifestyle - in many cases it is a combination of factors. Changes in lifestyle, diet and nutraceuticals may be enough to control cholesterol so it is critical we identify the possible triggers and emphasize the importance of “prevention.” A traditional doctor will tell patients that they need to eat healthier, but many patients don’t even know where to start or what “healthy” even means. At a Functional Medicine Practice, lifestyle -including your food choices - are part of the conversation at every visit, because we can’t ignore the importance of these factors in overall wellness and health. One growing area in the medical field is that of hormone replacement. This is where Bellissimo Medical stands out as a functional medicine practice, as we specialize in BioIdentical Hormone Replacement Therapy for both men and women. This treatment has been used effectively worldwide since the 1930s and numerous scientific studies have proven its effectiveness. However, patients need to work with qualified practitioners, because hormones are a delicate subject and not everyone is trained to provide this service. Bio-identical hormones, also known as natural hormones, are substances that have the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by the human body. Because these are naturally occurring substances that are found in us all, they produce the same physiologic response and there are virtually no side effects. Although they can bring about many health benefits and improved quality of life to those who need it, we will never prescribe hormones unless absolutely necessary. We will evaluate the patient’s current health condition and learn about their medical history to be able to develop a comprehensive program that targets unique needs. Hormone levels are tested before, during and after the treatment to ensure these are maintained at optimum balance. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. Visit www.BellissimoMedical.com.

BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN lmost daily, we have a child come in to our office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their six month checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is helpful to look at the underlying causes of cavities. In order to form a dental cavity, there are certain ingredients which are a must. First of all, cavity causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus Mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time). The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Therefore, the main players are bacteria, sugar, and acidity. We recommend brushing and flossing to reduce the quantities of bacteria and remove sugars left behind after meals. Fluoride can be used to strengthen the enamel. Xylitol products are showing some promising data in the ability to limit the effectiveness of the bacteria. Still, a person who brushes/ flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities depending on intake of certain foods and liquids. As it turns out, consumption of sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods and beverages we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. After a little digging, we usually find out that the unexpected cavities are preceded by the intake of acidic beverages. The bad news is that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium. Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats but rather to modify eating habits and limit the periods of exposure to certain foods. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. We recommend rinsing with water after consuming acidic drinks as it is very effective at balancing pH. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. Snacks eaten between meals should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating! n The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. REAL ESTATE

What’s New in Remodeling Trends? BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR y clients and friends always ask me, “Should I sell or remodel or should I remodel then sell?” Because of the various homeowner associations’ restrictions and permissions, these remodel jobs can take some time to get started. Permitting from the various municipalities is another challenge. Because of Hurricane Irma last year, many of the building and zoning departments, as well as the homeowners’ associations, are behind in their approval processes. If remodeling is on the agenda, kitchens and baths must take priority after your home has been secured. A major concern at this time is the threat of another active storm season. Roofs, garage doors, high-impact windows, and heavy-duty storm shutters (as alternative to high-impact windows) are among the highest of recommendations – whether you sell now or later. According to the latest report on remodeling, changing out a garage door can add value to your home. A friend of mine just did that, and the total cost, including permit, for a storm-proof, two-garage door was around $1,900. A high-end garage replacement can bring about a 137% recoupment! Securing your home in the event of a major weather event is key to helping a home sell for a higher price. You will not always receive 100% recoupment; however, sometimes you might receive more than that! For instance, an entry door replaced with a steel door could bring about a 138% recoupment. That one improvement leads the charge! A roof replacement (recent) can bring about $104%. Total roof replacements vary and usually a total exterior paint job follows. Replacing of fascia needs to be primed, painted and protected because wood, especially in South Florida, tends to mold and rot if not protected and taken care quickly after a roof replacement. A major kitchen remodel will bring around 60% of costs recouped – a bathroom around 90%! Streamlined designs, eclectic touches, and multiples of appliances lead the trends. Here are the latest kitchen design trends: ▸▸ Gray is the new white for cabinetry ▸▸ New functionality for pull-outs and cabinetry ▸▸ A classic black and white color palette ▸▸ Eye catching colors for kitchen sinks; the farmhouse sink is still extremely popular ▸▸ Bold fixtures ▸▸ Kitchen renovation costs include cabinetry. Some may opt to reface the countertops and cabinetry instead of replace, which can save the homeowner money and give that kitchen a fresh, new look. Just like the kitchen, “contemporary” designs are growing in popularity in bathroom remodels. These “contemporary” touches in the bathroom equate to clean and open designs, with floating vanities and freestanding tubs. Here are the top bathroom design trends: ▸▸ Classic white ▸▸ Plenty of storage ▸▸ Ease of use ▸▸ Smart bathroom with music and media ▸▸ Deluxe showers with butted glass enclosures ▸▸ Zen-like atmosphere ▸▸ Bold use and mix of lighting ▸▸ Pet-friendly Prior to making any decision to remodel or sell, it is a good idea to consult a real estate professional to get the big picture regarding time, cost, cost recapture and whether or not a remodel is best for your busy life.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Can I Modify? BY EVAN BARON here is a phrase which is often heard in family law circles, which is: “You are really never divorced if you have children.” Of course, this is an exaggeration, but there is certainly some truth to that statement. The reality is that issues concerning children, such as support, time sharing, and parental responsibility can be modified (changed) under the right circumstances. Those circumstances would require “an unanticipated, involuntary, substantial change of circumstance.” A party cannot just change his/her mind after an Agreement is reached. You cannot just ask for a “do over.” As an example: a parent cannot quit his or her job for a new job which pays less, and then request a reduction in child support. In addition, a parent cannot intentionally have his or employment terminated for cause (wrong doing) and then request a reduction in support because he/she is not working or has obtained a lower paying job. The above two examples are voluntary and therefore does not meet the criteria for a modification. If, however, parents are terminated through no fault of their own or become disabled, they can request a modification, because the change is not voluntary. Time sharing can also be modified if it meets the same criteria and the court believes a change is in a child’s best interests. Parents are permitted to relocate within 50 miles from the address they are residing in at the time an Agreement (Parenting Plan) is reached. However, this change, although permitted by law, can still result in the need for a modification of the time-sharing schedule. If, for example, the parents were residing in close proximity to one another and therefore were exercising equal time sharing, a 50-mile change of residence can be substantial. How will a parent who now may reside a distance from a child’s school get the child to class on time? How will a parent who resides a distance away be able to do pick up or drop off on a timely basis? Assuming this relocation was not anticipated at the time the Parenting Plan was entered into, a modification may be in the child’s best interests and therefore necessary. Sometimes, however, these changes are anticipated and included in the Parenting Plan. I represented a divorced Dad who at the time the Parenting Plan was signed, was working in another state. He however anticipated returning to South Florida in a few years. It was therefore an anticipated change which was stated in the Parenting Plan. It further stated that upon returning to the area his time sharing would automatically be modified to a 50/50 schedule. If that was not included in the original agreement, he might have been unable to prove an unanticipated change and litigation could have been the result. It is important to make sure that any Agreement entered into is clearly written and includes any anticipated change known at that time.
