Hurricane Irma
I
t has been a couple of weeks since those dreadful days. We saw our lights go out, the water come in (and out) and the winds blow. For the most part, however, we were ready. We closed our shutters, prepared our hurricane kits, filled our gas cans and gathered our insurance papers. Some of us evacuated, while others hunkered down and waited for whatever Mother Nature was going to bring. Our community did not come out unscathed, but mercifully the center of the storm avoided us this time. After seeing the near total devastation on the Caribbean island of Barbuda, some of us feel a bit lucky. One of the true honors of publishing this magazine is being able to tell the stories of members of our community doing incredible things. We have already heard countless selfless acts from “Hurricane Heroes” across the community. People putting the welfare of their neighbors before their own. We want to tell these stories. If you know a “Hurricane Hero” drop us a note at editordavie@ourcitymedia.com. Help us tell his or her story.

City of Cooper City to Hold Garage Sale and Book Swap COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
A
s the holidays approach, many are looking for gift items, both new and used. This month, the City of Cooper City will offer two great ways to find them at the Garage Sale and Book Swap.
Garage Sale
Whether you are selling or buying, this is the place to be for deals galore. Anywhere from 500 people to a
Sixty-three vendors will be selling a variety of household items, including clothing, toys and exercise equipment. The cost for a spot the size of a full parking space is $25. One parking space allowed per household. Registration begins September 6, at 6:30pm, at the Community Center and closes once all the spots are filled. No professional vendors. Vendors must be Cooper City residents. Proof of residency is required.
Book Swap
few thousand are expected to attend the Garage Sale, which will be held on October 7, from 7am to noon in the parking lot of the Cooper City Sports Complex at Stirling Road at 100th Avenue. “The residents love this event,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “It is easier than going to individual garage sales and is a one stop shop. It’s a great way to find some treasures at great prices and meet some of your Cooper City neighbors.”
From October 9 to 12, drop off your slightly used books in good condition at either the Pool and Tennis Center or Community Center. A ticket will be issued for each donated book. There are typically books for all ages and types of readers, ranging from Dr. Seuss to Stephen King. Audio books, DVD movies, complete board games and puzzles will also be also accepted. “In a day an age where many people hide behind their computer screens, this event is great to promote community involvement and reinforce literacy within the Cooper City Community,” said Trainor. “It is the perfect way to share the novel you once loved and discover a new best seller in the process.”
On October 13, parents and their children can come to the Community Center from 6pm to 7:30pm to swap tickets for books. At 5:30pm, there will be a special “kids only time,” which allows children the opportunity to go through the children’s books first. “Children really enjoy going to the book fair at school,” said Trainor. “By having a kids’ only time, we are doing our best to recreate the schools book fair experience, but for free! We hope that by creating this environment we will bring out the children’s inner book worm.” Trainor says that they are looking for volunteers to help categorize and sort the books the week prior to the Swap. For information on both events, call 954434-4300, ext. #233.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 10/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Ana or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at WindmillHealth@ att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

Ranches Equestrian Park is a great setting with useful amenities and plenty of parking. We’re sporting a great lineup of vendors this year, many of whom have been with us from the beginning, but also some new and different folks, as well. We’re constantly amazed at the imagination and effort that people bring and our festival has grown a wonderful sense of community and goodwill. Our festival has remained a small and intimate event, easily accessible even for folks who only have a little time to spend without the hassle that comes from larger events.” Approximately 50-60 vendors are expected to participate with items that are handmade or hand-embellished crafts and original art. They include paper arts, hand-crafted jewelry, specialty wood products, mosaics, paintings, children’s and students’ items, stained glass, holiday crafts, pet items and more. The Town will provide musical entertainment, food, and fun for the kids, also. Harriett Frankel attended the festival last year with her family and looks forward to returning. “I did most of my holiday shopping at the festival and also found some great items for myself,” said Frankel. “It was also a great opportunity to catch up with neighbors, family and friends.” For those who have the creative bug, it is not too late to sign up to exhibit. hen Davie’s Mayor, Councilmembers and staff make decisions, they directly impact the people who live there. This month, Davie students will have an opportunity to learn what it takes to run their Town. They will tour Town Hall and may even get to visit with the Mayor and/or Councilmembers. The Town of Davie activities for Government Week will be held on October 25 and 26. The Florida League of Cities, an association of member municipalities throughout Florida, is sponsoring “My city: I’m part of it; I’m proud of it.” The program is designed to educate schoolaged children about their local government. Last year, approximately 150 students attended the activities throughout the week and organizers are expecting the same this year. Between the hours of 9:30am and 3:30pm, they will tour Davie Town Hall, where they can observe Town staff performing their daily tasks. They will have the opportunity to interact with staff in areas, such as Administration, Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, Budget and Finance, Human Resources, Town Clerk’s office, Planning and Zoning, 2016 Government Week Building, and Engineering. Fire Engines, Police and Public Works vehicles might also be available for the kids to interact with and see. Groups may not exceed 40 students per tour group and must adhere to school board standards, as it relates to the number of adults required to supervise children on field trips. Once registration is full, no other groups will be accepted. SEAB to Crown Mr. and Miss Southwest Ranches COMMUNITY NEWS

his month, residents of the Town of Southwest Ranches will have an opportunity to showcase their poise, grace and character at the 2nd Annual Mr. and Miss Southwest Ranches Pageant. The event will be held on October 22, at 2pm, at Rolling Oaks Barn. All proceeds will benefit the Town of Southwest Ranches college scholarship fund offered through the Schools Education Advisory Board (SEAB). “People should enter to promote community service and pride in community through charitable works,” said Ivette Solera, liaison for the SEAB. “It is also a fun way to earn volunteer hours, while raising money for scholarships.” Residents from Southwest Ranches, age two and older, are eligible to enter. No experience is necessary. The registration fee is $25. Age categories are as follows, but subject to change based on participation: ▸ Ages 2-5: Tiny Miss/Mr. ▸ Ages 6-11: Little Miss/Mr. ▸ Ages 12-15: Jr. Miss/Mr. ▸ Ages 16-24: Miss/Mr. ▸ Ages 25+: Ms./Mr.
2016 Mr./Miss Southwest Ranches Pageant winners
On the application, contestants need to list their hobbies and interests; dislikes; and the person they admire most and why. Toddlers and Little Miss need to specify what they want to be when they grow up, while those ages 12 and up need to list something they aspire to do. “Last year’s scholarship fundraiser was aweinspiring,” said Kathy Sullivan, SEAB chairperson, who came up with the idea for the fundraiser. “I thought it would be a fun new way to raise money for the scholarship, but it turned out to be so much more! The small town feel was present in every act, which made it very special.” SEAB is a volunteer Town Advisory Board that was formed to give students and parents a voice, as well as to provide advocacy in the Town of Southwest Ranches.
To receive a college scholarship, students must be a resident of Southwest Ranches for at least two years, be between the ages of 17-25, be accepted into a college or technical school and serve at least 40 volunteer hours. In 2017, SEAB awarded nine college scholarships for $2,222 each. The students were: Krishani Harrinauth, Dylan Hernandez, Kaitlyn Hodgers, Annemarie Juin, Vivian Camille Martinez, Shauna Stevens, Sierra Stevens, Michael Tromans and Ryan Williams. “We want to help young people who wish to continue their education beyond high school,” said Sullivan. For information, call Ivette Solara at Town Hall at 954-424-0008.

Town of Davie Participates in #SaferBy4 Campaign to Reduce Preventable Child Deaths BY DEBBY TEICH
E
very year, young children lose their lives in the water or while sleeping. The Town of Davie; Davie Police Department; Davie Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts; and Davie Fire Rescue have joined together in an effort to reduce preventable child deaths. They are promoting the #SaferBy4 campaign, which informs and educates families and care givers about water safety and safe sleep practices for infants. The campaign was designed to help children reach their fourth birthday.
Drowning Prevention
Broward County has one of the highest rates of drowning fatalities among children ages one to four each year. Drowning occurs in as little as two minutes. A child can enter a pool in the time it takes a caregiver to answer the phone or start a load of laundry. Most children who die from a drowning were never supposed to be in the water. They wandered
away from a supervised area to enter water alone. The #SaferBy4 Campaign offers the following tips: ▸▸ Layers of Supervision: Assign a “water watcher” to ensure that a responsible adult is supervising the child in the pool. ▸▸ Barriers: Children should never have accessibility to water without being accompanied by an adult. Have several barriers (in case one fails) to physically block a child from a pool. Barriers include door alarms, pool fences, self‐latching gates, child proof locks and pool covers. ▸▸ Emergency Response: Early activation of EMS, CPR and Rescue Breathing can mean the difference between life and death. Keep a phone by the pool and learn CPR and Rescue Breathing. ▸▸ Swim Classes: Town of Davie offers Mommy and Me swim classes for children six months to three years of age. Classes are to help young children get ready to swim and for water safety. They emphasize fun in the water and elementary swimming skills. Preschool Swim Classes are for children ages 3 to 5 years old. Children learn water safety, survival skills, and foundational swimming concepts in a safe environment.
Safe Sleep
In the last five years in Broward County, the most preventable cause of death of children under one year of age was from an unsafe sleep environment. Florida Department of Children and Families offers the following tips to prevent accidental sleep-related deaths:
▸▸ Make sure the baby’s crib meets Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. ▸▸ The mattress should be firm and fit snuggly in the crib’s frame. ▸▸ To reduce the risk of suffocation, place baby on his/her back to sleep. ▸▸ Keep baby’s sleep area clear of strings, cords and wires. ▸▸ Give your baby a pacifier (never a bottle) when he or she goes to sleep. ▸▸ Pillows, blankets, bumper pads and toys look cute, but can suffocate your infant. ▸▸ Despite popular belief, sleep aids such as wedges and sleep positioners can increase the risk of infant death due to suffocation. ▸▸ Sleeping with your infant may be more convenient and look peaceful, but the risk of an adult rolling onto or pinning the baby and killing the infant by suffocation increases immensely through co-sleep. Increased Risk of Heart Disease Following Breast Cancer Diagnosis Other commonly used drugs for treating breast cancer, like trastuzumab (Herceptin), can also contribute to cardiovascular problems down the road, so patients need to be aware of the risks.” In addition, radiation therapy to the chest area can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease because the treatment is administered in close proximity to the heart.
Thomas Samuel, MD Diego Sadler, MD Breast Oncologist
Cardio-Oncologist
Breast cancer survival has improved over the years due to new, innovative therapies. However, some treatments may cause cardiotoxicity, or damage to your heart. This is especially true if you are at risk for heart disease. According to Thomas Samuel, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast oncologist, “A significant issue for women with breast cancer is the ‘survivorship’ period, which refers to what happens after they survive the cancer. It’s particularly important to be aware of the risk of heart disease.” Many of the therapies used, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy, can impact a patient’s longterm cardiac risk. Dr. Samuel adds, “For example, some of the agents we use in chemotherapy increase future risk of heart failure. Certain chemotherapy regimens that include medications called anthracyclines can cause weakness of the heart muscle and congestive heart failure.
“Thankfully, today radiation therapy techniques are very safe and localized, and are designed to spare the heart from any significant damage,” said Dr. Samuel. Cardiotoxicity can occur in various forms, including damage to the heart muscle itself, arteries, or the heart valves. Although cardiotoxicity can be life-threatening, it can often be managed effectively with medication and minimally invasive treatments. Diego Sadler, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida cardio-oncologist said, “Fortunately, the percentage of patients affected by these treatments is relatively small and there are now sophisticated imaging modalities that allow early detection and treatment of heart disease resulting from cancer treatment for breast cancer.” Breast cancer patients who have undergone these types of treatments, but who are also at high risk for heart disease due to other conditions, are at an increased risk for cardiotoxicity. “Pre-existing factors such as hypertension, diabetes or genetic conditions affect breast cancer survivors similar to how
they affect the general population; however, having undergone certain cancer therapies may put them at an even higher risk for heart disease,” said Dr. Sadler. It is also important to know that some therapies used in the treatment of breast cancer have the potential to cause cardiac disease many years, even decades after treatment. For this reason, surveillance to allow for early detection and treatment can offer improved cardio-vascular outcomes. The relatively new specialty, cardio-oncology, focuses on the effect cancer treatments have on the heart. Cleveland Clinic Florida is one of South Florida’s leading healthcare providers for both cancer and cardio-oncology care. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s multidisciplinary cardio-oncology team of oncologists, cardiologists, radiologists and cancer support specialists customize unique treatment plans for each patient. They are dedicated to caring for patients in every stage of cancer treatment who are at risk for, or have developed cardiovascular disease. This allows for the safe completion of potentially life-saving cancer treatments with minimal effects to their cardiovascular health – ultimately giving patients the best opportunity for long-term survivorship. Davie Youth Lacrosse Opens Registration for 2018 Season
SECTIONNEWS SPORTS HEAD
BY DEBBY TEICH
N
icknamed “the fastest sport on two feet,” lacrosse combines basketball, soccer and hockey. It continues to grow in popularity in South Florida, especially since it became sanctioned at the high school level. Davie Youth Lacrosse is now registering players for the 2018 season, which runs from late January to end of April. “The kids love lacrosse, because it is actionpacked with plenty of scoring,” said Pete Dunne, who co-founded the Davie program with Shaun Bamforth in 2008. “Athletes of all ages, skills and sizes can play the sport. It is very easy for new players to pick up the game, especially if they start at a young age.” The program is organized and run by the Davie Youth Lacrosse Foundation, Inc., a 501c3 charitable
organization. Davie Youth Lacrosse is a “travel” recreation program, with a focus on giving players of all skill levels a quality learning experience and an opportunity to have fun playing lacrosse. Players are taught improved agility, conditioning, team work, and the skills necessary to play lacrosse. They are also taught to respect the game, as well as the other players. Davie Youth Lacrosse has approximately 340 boys and girls, in grades kindergarten to 8th, that play on 17 teams. They practice twice per week, with games on Saturdays against other recreational lacrosse teams throughout South Florida. Practices and home games are held at Bamford Park in Davie. Experience is not a requirement to join - just a willingness to learn and have fun. To encourage new players to try the game, the program has loaner gear available for younger players. Prior to the 2018 season, Davie Youth Lacrosse will be holding free clinics from October to December.
Register at www.davielacrosse.com. In addition, they will be offering two programs in December/January. There is an advanced training program for new and experienced players, with more information available at www.faststartlacrosse.com. There is also a Davie Winter Box Lacrosse League. The weekly coached game league, for kids ages kindergarten through high school, includes six weeks of “indoor” lacrosse on turfed hockey rinks, with games two evenings a week. Players can create and register as a team. For information, visit www.browardlaxdvantage.com. Dunne says they are always looking for coaches, with or without experience. They will teach the volunteers everything they need to know about the game. The program has limited spots available and is expected to fill up. Financial aid is available to qualified Davie residents. For information, visit www.davielacrosse.com.
Davie Residents Enjoy Playing Pickleball at Bamford Park BY DEBBY TEICH
O
ne of the fastest growing sports in America, Pickleball combines ping pong, tennis, and badminton. People of all ages and athletic abilities have been having fun playing the game at Bamford Park in Davie. It has become extremely popular with ages 50 plus, and has even caught on among high school and college students. “Pickleball is easy to learn and a lot of fun,” said 70-year-old Sam Epstein, who switched from tennis to Pickleball. “It is also a great work out and very social. I have met so many nice people.” Pickleball is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fastpaced, competitive game for experienced players. It can be played either as singles or doubles. The court is about one-third the size of a tennis court, and players can easily move to get to the ball. The game is played with a pickleball paddle, a 20-foot-long and 34-inch-high net, and a plastic ball. They volley the ball back and forth to score on the opposing team. Players must learn a unique set of Pickleball terms, such as “dillball,” “flabjack,” “falafel,” “oPA!” and “pickledome.” In 1965, U.S. Congressman Joel Pritchard, William Bell, and Barney McCallum created Pickleball to provide a sport for the entire family. They named it after Pickles, the family dog. Pickleball was designed to be easy to learn and play whether you’re five, eighty-five or somewhere in between. The sport currently has over 400,000 players in the United States

Mother and Daughter Team Up to Teach 2nd Grade at Griffin Elementary
SCHOOL NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
A
t Griffin Elementary School, Susie Ruder and her daughter, Lauren, are taking team teaching to a whole new level. As the mother-daughter team blends old and new techniques, students in their second-grade class are reaping the benefits of a combined 43 years of teaching experience. It all started when the principal needed two second grade teachers to team up, because the grade level was growing. When 2nd grade teacher Susie asked her daughter, who was teaching kindergarten, to team up, she quickly agreed. “It is a once in a lifetime experience for the two of us,” said Susie. “We blend my years of what works tried and true and her innovative and creative style of teaching. The children get double of everything, including our love and nurturing style. We are very hands on with the kids and always showing them one more way to learn something new. We never miss an opportunity to tell our students how much they are loved, how perfect we think they are, and how lucky we are to have each of them in our care to teach.” Throughout Susie’s 37-year teaching career, Susie and Lauren Ruder she has taught several grade levels and many different types of students. At Griffin Elementary, she is known for teaching her students what are often referred to as “Ruderisms.” They are sayings that the students can repeat when they need to get through something. Some examples include: “Every time you make a mistake, you learn something new.” and “When you give kindness to others, it comes back to you.”
“Teaching is a gift,” said Susie. “I am preparing the kids for their journey ahead. They are my passion and I teach them everything I know and more. It is a huge responsibility to have an audience of excited children who hold on to your every word, each day, five days a week. I don’t want to miss the chance to teach them something they may need later in life.” Lauren went to Griffin Elementary as a child and has been a teacher there for six years. She taught 3rd grade for one year and kindergarten for four. This is her first year in second grade. In 2016-17, she won “Teacher of the Year.” “Teaching with my mom is awesome,” said Lauren. “I get to do my fun, energetic, creative things and she takes their knowledge to a new level. We really feed off each other.” According to the mother-daughter team, the kids are not the only ones benefiting from the arrangement. Susie says that Lauren has already helped her master many technological skills that used to be a source of frustration for her. Lauren says that her mom has taught her a lot about teaching second grade, which involves new material, a new age, and new expectations. They have many fun activities planned for the year, including the traditional holiday pajama party at Susie’s home. She has held the party for many years, but this year there will be double the amount of kids and double the fun. Each child will receive a scarf handmade by Susie’s mother; watch a holiday movie; and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies by the fireplace.

T
he issue of driving is one many seniors and their families will face. It is one that is often inevitable when there is a diagnosis of dementia. It is important to know that a person with dementia usually does not self-limit his/her own driving. And in almost every state, physicians are not mandated to report someone they feel is unsafe to drive. For those reasons, the burden often falls onto a family member to make the decision. When trying to decide if the person should continue to drive, there are many factors to consider other than memory. Families tend to focus on if the person remembers where they are going and are they at risk of getting lost. The solution is to allow driving to continue, but only to familiar locations. However, people with dementia experience deficits in several other areas that are key to driving. For example, it is common for a person to have problems with depth perception. This makes it difficult for the driver to determine how close other cars and objects are. Determining if there is time to pull out into traffic or turn before an approaching car reaches them are some of the issues faced when there is impaired depth perception. Decision making and the ability to anticipate events also becomes more problematic. A driver may see a ball roll into the road, but be unable to anticipate that a child could be running for it. Or he/she may be taxed with deciding quickly what to do when an unanticipated event does occur. Divided attention also can become challenging for a person with dementia. The ability to look at the speedometer and then back at the road can be difficult. The driver may find it challenging to continue to focus on driving, while giving attention to a bicyclist or pedestrian on the side of the road. In addition to problems due to dementia, there are normal changes that occur with aging that bring their own challenges. A decline in vision and hearing, decreased flexibility, and a slower reaction time are common changes that happen as a person ages. All key factors to a person being able to drive successfully. Regular inspections of your loved one’s car for dings, dents, or scratches may help to determine if there are issues, especially with depth perception. Talk to your loved one’s neighbors to determine if they have noticed any problems. And go for a drive with your loved one to observe any possible difficulties. Watch to see if they are signaling properly. Do they check thoroughly before changing lanes? Are they able to properly maintain their speed and the distance between cars? It is important to know that if a senior is involved in a car accident, he/she is more likely to suffer serious injuries than a younger driver. And statistics show that a senior citizen is at a higher risk of death when involved in a car crash, even one that appears minor. If you are concerned about your loved ones driving, please discuss this with his/her physician. Although a doctor is not mandated to report, many are more willing when they know the family is on board. In addition, explore the use of a driving assessment program and tools available which can help in determining abilities and limitations. Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
Green Tea Found to be Beneficial in Preventing Memory Loss and Obesity BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
F
or many years, scientist and tea enthusiast alike have raved about the health benefits of drinking green tea. If you were never a fan of this ancient tradition, a new study may give you just the push you need to take that first sip. Researchers from Northwest A&F University in China have concluded EGCG, a compound found in green tea, is beneficial in protecting against memory loss and combatting the harmful effects of insulin resistance. This research is promising in the sense that it could offer an alternative to those who suffer from Type 2 diabetes, which is caused by several factors—one of them being insulin resistance. The study, published in the FASEB Journal, was conducted on three groups of mice. The first group was a control group consuming a standard diet. The second group consumed a diet that was high in fats and sugars while the third group consumed the high fat/high sugar diet along with some EGCG added to their water. The mice in the second group ended up having a higher body weight than those in the control and EGCG groups. In addition, researchers found the mice in the EGCG group performed better in tests of memory than the mice in the other two groups. The fact that the high sugar/high fat diet is similar to the Western diet led these scientists to conclude EGCG could be an option in combating memory impairment caused by such diets. It is important to note that the study does not give the green light for consumption of unhealthy foods by counteracting their negative effects just by drinking green tea; it actually highlights the importance of nutrition and lifestyle as they affect the outcomes that are taking place in your body. Furthermore, the findings highlight the importance of proper and effective supplementation when nutrition alone is not enough. As a functional medicine doctor, my approach focuses on preventing disease through the optimization of healthy living, which of course would not be possible without adequate nutrition. Know that even if you eat healthy, your body may not be absorbing all the nutrients it needs due to a wide range of factors, including barriers in the gastrointestinal tract that prevent adequate absorption. In today’s hectic world, nutritional deficiencies are not uncommon. At Bellissimo Medical, we can conduct specialized testing to know exactly what deficiencies a patient may have (including those that may affect weight and memory) and we can address these and guide our patients on the type and dosing of medical-grade herbal supplementation that may be needed. In addition, when addressing the bodies vitamins and mineral deficiencies we can maximize your body’s healing potential to help you recover from daily stressors, repair damage and prevent aging. Increased energy, a feeling of overall well-being and increased sports performance are just a few of the many health benefits. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Am I Too Old for Orthodontics? ASK THE EXPERT
BY DR. ALON GROSMAN
I
t is true that for many years braces have been as strongly associated with adolescents as acne. However, this has been changing dramatically in recent time. In 2010, the American Association of Orthodontics reported that the percentage of adults being treated with orthodontics has increased to 22 % nationally. This is a 50% increase from a similar study done in the mid 1990’s. One factor which seems to be responsible for this upswing in adult orthodontic treatment is an increase in cosmetic options. The size of braces, even the metal braces, has decreased significantly. Tooth colored braces have been around for a long time, but have had the poor reputation of staining. With advancements in materials, this is no longer a concern. Clear aligners, used increasingly in recent years, have brought another option for adults hoping to hide their treatment. Another factor which seems to have affected the rate of adult orthodontics is self perception. When I turned 25 years old, I remember hearing for the first time that “30 was the new 20.” It was very inspiring to know as I approached 30, I was actually getting younger. Ten years later, I was lucky enough to discover that “40 is the new 30.” This general optimism in aging has brought with it a new industry of “wellness.” Magazines have been created dedicated to health at various stages of life. Doctors espousing the “truth” about longevity have taken over prime time television. Plastic surgeons have plastered local advertising with new technologies in turning back the effects of time. In the dental industry, we have seen whitening material become an over the counter item. In my field of orthodontics, Align Technology, the parent company of “Invisalign,” has poured millions of Wall Street dollars into marketing campaigns targeting adult patients. Should age be a factor in the decision to start orthodontic treatment? Absolutely not. In my opinion, there are both advantages, as well as challenges, with treatment of every age group. Treatment of the teen age population has the benefit of growth. We are able to accomplish some goals which would not be possible with adults without the use of jaw surgery. However, hygiene and motivation can become compromised very quickly. Adults, on the other hand, are usually very motivated as they have truly considered the sacrifice of time and finances before starting treatment. Still, treatment time for some adults tends to be longer. Reasons for an increased length of treatment time range from the need to open or close spaces for missing teeth, higher or lower density of bone, or a decreased level of bone support due to a history of gum disease. The most important part of any treatment, regardless of age, is the proper diagnosis of all related conditions of the mouth. This may require input from the dentist, periodontist (gum specialist), or another dental specialist. Once this is accomplished, the orthodontist can create a realistic treatment plan using the orthodontic appliance, whether it be braces or clear aligners, which can accomplish these goals. In short, I like to prescribe to my own philosophy that one is only as old as one feels. If you desire improving your smile and having teeth that fit together comfortably, then you should certainly consider orthodontic treatment. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. s the law stands today, equal time sharing is not presumed to be in the best interest of the children in all situations. I will, however, state that it is becoming the norm rather than the exception. It is believed that frequent contact with both parents will result in better adjusted child. Of course, every case is different and as such, it is difficult to have a set rule for all cases. Parent’s work schedules, travel schedules and locations should be considered. A parent who must leave for work prior to a minor child having to wake up for school could present a problem. A parent who does not have a set schedule, such as pilots or firefighters, also require some planning. Parents who choose to live a distance apart can also complicate the situation. Of course, the other factor which is always considered is child support and how equal time sharing affects the monthly amount to be paid. Child Support in Florida is based upon several factors, one of which is the number of overnights a minor child spends with each parent. An equal time-sharing schedule will result in a reduced amount of support, since it is presumed that each parent will have significant “out of pocket” expenses if each has an equal amount of time with the child. This concept of equal time sharing has existed for several years now. I

have recently met with prospective clients who seem to share the same issue. A parent has equal time sharing pursuant to their Parenting Plan, but in reality, the parent is not actually exercising his/her 50%. The result is that the parent who is not following the schedule is receiving a financial benefit by a reduced child support payment, but is not sharing in the responsibility of caring for the child. Is there a way to correct this situation, even though the parties had previously reached an Agreement? The answer is “yes” and a correction to this situation can be accomplished by a Petition for Modification. The moving party (the parent who is in fact receiving less support than he/she should) must allege that since the parties entered into their Parenting Plan there has been a substantial change of circumstance that was not anticipated at the time the Parenting Plan was agreed to. To be successful, it is essential that a calendar be kept, listing the actual overnights being exercised by each parent. Just alleging that mom or dad doesn’t have the children 50% of the time without some additional proof will probably not be a strong or successful argument if it were to go before a judge. If the Petition is successful, a new time-sharing schedule would be determined and child support would be recalculated based upon the actual number of overnights each party is exercising. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. n August, BSO was greatly honored to host the Crisis Intervention Team International Conference. This opportunity to share and exchange best practices for mental health treatment with police departments around the world was a testament to how far we’ve come as an agency. Since police officers are typically the first responders to psychiatric emergencies, I made it a priority that our deputies receive training to handle mental health incidents more capably. If someone falls and breaks a bone, the next step is immediately clear: a trip to the emergency room. If someone suffers a psychotic break, a solution is not as easily prescribed. We were recently called to the home of a 25-year-old man who had become enraged and verbally aggressive, threatening his mother. She had retreated to her vehicle and locked the doors. The son followed. He pulled the driver’s side handle repeatedly with force and broke it off. He then started punching the car window. Fearing for her safety, the mother drove to the community gatehouse and implored the security guard to call 9-1-1. Sadly, the mother knew the routine. She supplied the necessary information - location of the house, details of the incident, the age and height of her son and what he was wearing. She also communicated that her son had been diagnosed with psychotic behavioral issues, was not being medicated and may have been carrying a knife. The mother suggested he needed to be Baker Acted, a process under Florida law which allows an individual to be taken to a medical facility for involuntary examination and initial treatment. Fortunately, the mother also knew to specifically ask for a CIT-trained deputy to interact with her son. BSO’s CIT deputies receive specialized training, which helps them identify and more effectively engage an individual suffering from a mental health crisis. Based on the nationally recognized “Memphis Model,” the course was established nearly 30 years ago following the death of a man with mental illness who charged police with a knife. The model provides a more effective, compassionate and safer approach to these types of incidents. One of the keys is de-escalation. In situations where moods and actions can shift and escalate quickly and unpredictably, the first few moments of verbal contact are critical to calming individuals. Our 9-1-1 operators, who also take a CIT course, quickly assess incoming calls and determine the emergency response required. In this case, Deputy Jeffrey Smith, a CIT-trained, 34-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, was dispatched. Initiating conversation, he immediately noticed the young man was confused, incoherent and rambling. Deputy Smith recognized the signs and symptoms of mental illness and knew professional treatment was required. “You talk to people in an upset state as best as you can without getting hands-on,” Deputy Smith says, who engaged the young man verbally for over a half hour before getting him safely out to a vehicle. On the ride to the hospital, they continued the conversation, exemplifying the good rapport and positive relationship the two established on scene and reinforcing why CIT-trained law enforcement professionals like Deputy Smith are essential to effective policing. If this was in a community without CIT-trained police officers, the young man might have been confronted by an officer who did not know how best to approach the situation. It may have escalated, possibly ending in arrest or something far worse. Since taking office more than four years ago, I directed that every one of our deputies become CIT-trained. Before I took office, there were only 173 active deputies with this specialized training in our entire agency. Today, roughly 700 of our active deputies are CIT-trained. And, within the next few years, we will reach our goal of having all BSO deputies complete the CIT training program. This will better allow us to serve those in our community who struggle every day with mental illness.

ASK THE MAYOR
Our City
T
here are many exciting projects and events taking place in the Town of Davie right now and over the next three months. We currently have two large projects underway to better serve the needs and interests of our residents. The construction of the Shenandoah Fire Station and Community Center is well underway at Shenandoah Park and is expected to be completed in mid-2018. In combination with the construction, we have also been enhancing Shenandoah Park with a number of upgrades and additions, including new basketball and tennis courts, outdoor fitness equipment, a new picnic pavilion installed next to the park’s large playground, and the town’s very first (water) splash pad. At Bamford Sports Complex, two natural grass multipurpose sports fields are being converted to artificial turf sports fields. These new fields, will allow us to increase usage, regardless of weather conditions. They will provide two sports fields that can be used year-round, reduce the cost of maintenance and provide a superb playing surface. Construction of these two new fields will be completed in January 2018. The Town of Davie is a fully committed participant with the Broward County’s #SaferBy4 initiative. The purpose of this initiative is to keep our children safe by their 4th Birthday through water safety and drowning prevention and safe sleep habits. I encourage all parents to give serious consideration to putting their children into a water safety program or swimming lessons offered by our Aquatic Division. They offer programs for children 6 months and older. Speaking of water safety and the Aquatic Division, our lifeguards participated in the Aquatics International Nationwide Summer Lifeguard Challenge this year. Videos on specific drills pertaining to life saving techniques and execution were submitted by communities from around the United States for review and evaluation. I am proud to inform you that Davie took first place in both the May and June challenges. As of this writing, are waiting to hear the July results. I commend our aquatic staff’s professional excellence and their commitment to water safety and the #SaferBy4 initiative. They are one more reason why the Town of Davie is a great place to live, work, play and learn. As we move into the fall season, I hope you will attend a number of terrific community events to be held at the Town’s covered Arena located at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. On October 14, don’t miss the 2nd Annual Doc Reno’s Bacon, Blues & Brews festival. It’s not only a great event, the proceeds from the event benefit Construction Angels, a 501c3. On October 28 and 29, JES Productions will be hosting the 2nd Annual Seafood Festival. The Southeastern Circuit Rodeo Finals return to Davie from November 9 to 11. And the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department will once again be hosting the Town’s annual Holiday and Craft Show on November 18 and 19. If you’re looking for a fun and safe Halloween activity for your children, don’t miss this year’s Halloween Happenings at Robbins Park Preserve on October 28. Activities include costume contests, games, entertainment, vendors, a pumpkin patch and the very popular “Not So Scary” Haunted House. If you are a horse owner, I want to encourage you to enter this year’s Halloween Horse Costume Contest. And, in case you don’t know, Robbins Park has a designated parking area for horse trailers. As always, remember if it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. See you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook. For more information on any Davie program or event, call 954327-3941 or visit the Town of Davie’s newly renovated website at www.davie-fl.gov.

A
ccording to Collateral Analytics’ recent study, Real Estate professionals sell properties for more money than FSBOs (For Sale by Owners). This contradicted previous research - even with the advent of Sellers on the internet and exposing homes to the wide open market! However, Buyers purchase their homes through agents 91% of the time. According to the math, FSBO sellers are only engaging 9% of the actual buyers. The tools, digital, social media and print marketing efforts and expertise Real Estate professionals access and purchase as part of their business practices will far outweigh any FSBO’s efforts. This results in higher sales prices for properties offsetting brokerage fees. A Seller’s choices are: 1) Do all the work, assume the risk and liability, and net fewer dollars or 2) Place the work and risk in the hands of a professional and net more dollars. The MLS is just a part of a professional’s marketing efforts. Yes, Real Estate is a marketing business. Marketing means attracting qualified buyers to your property. Selling a home and closing a home are two different things. Many agents sell homes, but fewer close them. It takes a professional team to market, show, finance, clear financing issues and inspection issues to get a home closed. There may be legal issues requiring the expertise of a legal team – which your professional agent will recognize. There are so many disclosures today which are unfamiliar to most homeowners. “This makes the strongest case for hiring an agent, considering that agents allow homeowners to reduce the work, risk, and time of selling a home,” stated Dr. Michael Sklarz, the CEO of Collateral Analytics and a co-author of the study which examined 200,000 FSBO sales and one million MLS sales that took place across hundreds of markets in 2016 and 2017. On average, FSBO listings sold for about 5.5 percent less than comparable properties sold through the MLS, with FSBO listings tending to sell for a little less than their automated valuations and MLS listings tending to sell for a little more. This 5.5 percent differential “is remarkably close to average commission rates,” the authors noted. Agents possess marketing expertise, including knowledge of how to stage a home and the best repairs to make. This allows the homeowner to move on more quickly and reduce liability. MLS listings may attract more showings (and bids), because they offer compensation to buyer’s brokers for bringing a buyer to a sale, whereas FSBO listings often do not. According to the study, “[FSBO sellers] are avoiding commissions, while netting home prices less than they would with an agent-represented MLS sale,” the authors wrote. “They are avoiding commissions at any price, even one that exceeds the commission rate.” The possibility that “buyers do make low-ball offers to FSBO sellers deducting the entire commission, not just the seller’s portion” from their offers, would explain the study’s results. Pricing, marketing, and a professional team to assist in closing are just a few of the reasons you hire a professional Real Estate agent to handle the sale of your most important asset. Consult one today before attempting FSBO DIY (Doing It Yourself)! Zona Horton has been successfully selling Real Estate in South Florida for over 33 years. She works for the international Keller Williams family of companies and serves Davie, Cooper City and surrounding cities. Call her for all your Real Estate needs.
