Happy Holidays

T

he holiday season is upon us, and while the holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, the one thing we all share is the spirit of community. It was just a few months ago that we witnessed neighbors helping neighbors as we banded together to prepare for Hurricane Irma. And in the aftermath of that storm, strangers became friends and a renewed sense of community was born. In the spirit of the holiday season, let’s rekindle those bonds as we open our homes and hearts. Share your holiday traditions with a family of another faith. Teach your children the true meaning of giving, by donating to a worthy charity or volunteering at a community food bank. And as the new year approaches, take a moment to count your blessings and resolve to become a more active member of your community. The perfect place to start is right here in the pages of this Our City magazine. Each and every issue is packed with stories on all the wonderful activities and programs taking place in your community, along with articles on the amazing accomplishments of your neighbors, young and old. Wishing you and yours a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year!

Our Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park location is very beautiful and serene--perfect for a day of fun with horses and kids.” Check in/registration is at 8am and classes begin at 9am. The event includes a variety of classes, such as speed challenges (barrel racing, pole bending), Western (showmanship, pleasure, equitation), English (showmanship, pleasure, equitation), Hunter (showmanship, Under Saddle, equitation) and more. All of the classes are limited to 15 entries. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded to 1st place winners. Those in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places will receive ribbons.

“The greatest reward is seeing the growing confidence this experience gives to children,” said Lauretano-Haines. “Seeing the beaming smile on the face of a rider who has never competed before or won anything is such a beautiful way to experience the rural lifestyle Southwest Ranches has to offer! The feeling of great triumph for some very young riders is infectious! Everybody is a winner at the Southwest Ranches Holiday Fun Horse Show.” The public is invited to attend, whether or not they have a rider in the show. “We hope to see our neighbors and friends come out to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, maybe have a bite to eat from our food vendors, and to cheer on some talented and determined kids putting their best foot forward,” said Lauretano-Haines. “We are grateful for the support of our Town Council, who has never wavered in their commitment to provide this event for everyone at no cost. Our little show has grown each year, and we are prepared for a great turnout again this year.” Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Avenue (Volunteer Road) in Southwest Ranches. Registration is required. For information, call 954-343-7452 or send an email to dlauretano@ southwestranches.org.

Cooper City Selects Teen Council BY DEBBY TEICH

C

ooper City has selected its 2017-2018 Teen Council and they are already hard at work. The teens, in grades six to 11, are getting involved in programs and events that focus on social and recreation activities, while they accrue valuable service hours. “These young teens are our future,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “The Teen Council empowers them and helps with their leadership development. It also helps keep our City events fresh, as they are able to contribute a different perspective. The Teen Council consists of ten members who are selected and appointed by the City Commission. It aims to empower teens with the core values of leadership, accountability, and a heart for service by providing volunteer opportunities, leadership experience, establishing high standards for behavior, and promoting teens to effectively communicate while managing their time and volunteer profiles. The teens meet once a month to implement programs and events that will benefit the teenaged youth of Cooper City. Some of the projects they will work on this year include planning Light Up Cooper City, 1st Annual Founder’s Day Color Run 5k/1mile run and 2nd Annual Dog-Adopt-A-Thon. In addition to the scheduled recreation programs and events, the Teen Council will be empowered to research, coordinate and implement a community project during their term. While in the program, members are getting plenty of leadership experience. Each one holds an officer position, whether it is Spring Event Chairman or VicePresident, and is responsible to the group. Throughout the year, the council members also participate in a variety of team building games and activities before each meeting. Although they might seem like fun little ice breaker games, each one teaches a different lesson regarding leadership and communication. “They learn how to lead effectively and work with other leaders,” said Trainor. There are many other ways for high school students, grades 9 to 12, to assist in the community and earn service hours, including the Student Assistant Volunteer (SAV) program. In the SAV program, volunteers assist staff during Kids Days Off

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 12/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Ana or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at WindmillHealth@ att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

Cooper City Moms and Sons Spend Quality Time Together COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

C

ooper City moms and their sons recently gathered for the Mother Son Night of Fun at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2002, this hometown event has been a way for moms and their sons (K – 5th grade) to enjoy a special evening together, as they bond through a variety of fun activities and a bit of friendly competition. Many of them return year after year. “This event provided a unique opportunity for mother and son relationships to blossom,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “This special night included food, dancing and crafts, as well as team building activities between the parents and children that are sure to leave a lasting impression.” The theme for the night was “Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Over 100 moms and sons dressed up as Rock ‘n’ Roll stars. They enjoyed an action-packed evening filled with activities, prizes, dancing and dinner. If mom was not available, grand-moms, step-moms, and aunts stepped in. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. Grandparents Day includes fun, games, crafts, snacks and an old-fashioned ice cream party. Unfortunately, it was cancelled this year due to Hurricane Irma, At the Annual Daddy Daughter Dance last month, Cooper City daughters enjoyed a memorable “date with dad” that included an evening of dancing, dinner and fun. This year’s theme was a Peter Pan. On December 20, tickets go on sale for the Father Son Adventure, which will be held January 26. On April 18, tickets will go on sale for the Mother-Daughter Tea, which will be held on May 12. All of the events are limited to Cooper City residents and require reservations. “Our events provide an outlet for our residents to bond with their family and spend quality time together in an entertaining atmosphere free of today’s technology

Plantation Shutters

What products are currently trending? Plantation shutters remain one

of our most popular products. They are a timeless window treatment that is always in style. If you’re looking for a decorative statement, plantation shutters provide trim work around your window, including a new contemporary frame. Depending on which shutter you choose, they can complement any decor. The shutters allow air flow to enter through the louvers which makes it possible for a breeze to pass through your home without having to open the entire shutter. It’s also an ideal option for consumers who value light control and energy efficiency. You can choose among three different size louvers - 2½ inches, 3½ inches and 4½ inches. There are also three options for the tilt rod - the traditional style with front center tilt, a hidden rod in the back or none at all. All of these styles are on display in our showroom.

What else is trending in your showroom? If you’re looking for a soft,

contemporary look, the transitional roller shades are an ideal product that can work in any room. These shades alternate sheer and solid fabric, allowing a single shade to transition from open to close. It’s a perfect shade for those who want a view but also light control and privacy. The fabrics are available in a variety of textures and colors. While manual control is an option for this product, it is one of our most popular items for motorization - simply click the remote and set the shade to your preferred setting. We also have multiple head rail styles. We currently carry Combi by Elwin,

Neighbors to Celebrate the Winter Solstice in the Saddle COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

A

s the sun sets during the winter solstice on December 21, a group of neighbors from Southwest Ranches will meet for a small informal gathering at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. They will celebrate the official start of winter with friends, as they experience the beauty of Richard Medlock’s sculpture. There is no charge for the event. The entire community is welcome. The word “solstice” is derived from a combination of Latin words meaning “sun” and “to stand still.” Solstices occur twice a year. They are the longest and shortest days of the year, marking the start of summer and winter, respectively. They are also the best days to witness one of the key design elements of Medlock’s Equestrian Oasis, which is located in the park. The public art feature reflects both form and function. The main area is shaped like a horseshoe and contains earth berms, stones for seating, a waterfall, fountain and shade trees. A concrete saddle sculpture sits on the western ridge of the berm. It is strategically placed so that it cradles the sunset during summer and winter solstices. When the sun sets, it appears to sit perfectly in the saddle, where a rider would. Residents have celebrated the solstice since the park opened in 2004. This year’s event is scheduled to begin at 5pm, leaving enough time for everyone to find a spot for their chair or blanket before the sun sets. Organizers will serve light refreshments. “The presence of the public art feature in our park gives the community reason to gather and visit, marking the change of seasons in a positive and neighborly way, as Artist Richard Medlock envisioned.” said December Lauretano-Haines, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Southwest Ranches. “Coming together to enjoy the tranquil setting while watching the sun go down is Southwest Ranches’ way of finding refreshment in our hearts. Join us!” Carol Cullins recently moved to Southwest Ranches and plans to attend. “I have heard so much about seeing the sun set in the saddle,” said Cullins. “I am new to the neighborhood and I am excited to meet some of my neighbors. Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 Volunteer Rd., just north

of Stirling Rd. in Sunshine Ranches. It has more than 20 acres of lushly-landscaped open space designed for the enjoyment of Southwest Ranches residents and their horses. It is the City’s first public recreational facility and a great place to school a horse; walk a dog; meet some friends or enjoy the surroundings. There is no charge for the event. COMMUNITY NEWS

ike riding is a great way for people of all ages and fitness levels to improve health, burn calories, and have fun in the fresh air. In an effort to get more of its youth interested in the sport, the City of Cooper City recently hosted the inaugural Bike Rodeo at the Sports Complex. “Cooper City was recognized as a healthy weight champion city and it is important that we continue to promote an active lifestyle within our community,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the City of Cooper City Recreation Department. “Bike riding is a form of exercise that allows a child to experience a sense of independence, but at the same time is something fun that families can do together.” At the Bike Rodeo, the children rode on several courses with different levels of difficulty. The event included helmet fittings, bike safety demonstrations, information pamphlets, activity books, face painting and more. Two bikes were raffled off courtesy of Brunt Insurance and Beef O Brady’s Cooper City. Organizers also joined forces with Family Central and hosted a Literacy Fair. Children were given free books and able to enjoy story time, as well as enter a raffle for free toys. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org.

Fitness Zones Opens at Vista View and Tree Tops Parks COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

R

esidents in the Davie area now have two more ways to stay healthy. Memorial Healthcare System recently opened Fitness Zones at Vista View Park and Tree Tops Park, boosting its total to eight in South Broward County. Memorial Fitness Zones are a collaboration between the healthcare system and Broward County, with each designed specifically to serve the needs of the community where it’s located. The other Fitness Zones are at TY Park (Hollywood), Dania Beach Linear Park (Dania Beach), Miramar Regional Park (Miramar), Brian Piccolo Park (Cooper City), Markham Park (Sunrise) and CB Smith Park (Pembroke Pines). “It’s always been a priority for the healthcare system to offer the communities we serve inexpensive and easily accessible ways to focus on their overall well-being,” said Rob Herzog, Director of Fitness and Sports Medicine for Memorial Healthcare System. “Memorial Fitness Zones are only one way we are doing this, but there are many more. We support our community as they continue to place their trust in us.” The Fitness Zone at Vista View Park opened in September. To celebrate, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony that featured dignitaries from Memorial, Broward County Parks and Recreation, and the Town of Davie, including Davie Mayor Judy Paul. There was also a fitness demonstration and picnic lunch. Unlike the previous six Memorial Fitness Zones, the equipment at this park focuses on the athletic population and allows various exercises that focus on performance. “The type of equipment was selected due to the type of person that utilizes Vista View Park on a daily basis, one that focuses on athletic performance and advanced conditioning,” said Herzog. The Fitness Zone at Tree Tops Park opened last month. It has traditional

equipment that focuses on total body workouts for all populations, including pieces adapted for wheelchair access. It is Memorial’s last planned zone at this time. The openings also marked a milestone for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, which is celebrating its

25th anniversary. What began as a few units on a single floor at Hollywood’s Memorial Regional Hospital has become the largest pediatric hospital serving Broward, Palm Beach, and northern Miami-Dade counties. “One of the biggest goals of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has been to make sure we’re part of the fabric of this community,” said Chantal Leconte, FACHE, administrator and CEO of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “And what better way to do that than to provide the tools for healthy living for those we care for and care about.” Vista View Park is located at 4001 SW 142nd Avenue in Davie. Tree Tops Park is located at 3900 SW 100th Avenue in Davie.

2nd Annual Mr./Miss Southwest Ranches Pageant Winners Announced BY DEBBY TEICH

A

t the 2nd Annual Mr./Miss Southwest Ranches Pageant, contestants had an opportunity to showcase their poise, grace and character – and all for a good cause. The money raised at the event will benefit the Town of Southwest Ranches College Scholarship Fund through the Schools and Education Advisory Board. “The event promotes community service and pride in community through charitable works,” said Ivette Solera, liaison for the SEAB. “It is also a fun way to earn volunteer hours, while raising money for scholarships.” SEAB is a volunteer Town Advisory Board that was formed to give students and parents a voice, as well as to provide advocacy in the Town of Southwest Ranches. To receive a college scholarship, students must be a resident of Southwest Ranches for at least two years, be between the ages of 17-25, be accepted into a college or technical school and serve at least 40 volunteer hours. In 2017, SEAB awarded nine college scholarships for $2,222 each. The students were: Krishani Harrinauth, Dylan Hernandez, Kaitlyn Hodgers, Annemarie Juin, Vivian Camille Martinez, Shauna Stevens, Sierra Stevens, Michael Tromans and Ryan Williams.

In 1974, McQuaid combined his passion for sports and mentoring students when he returned to coach the Nova High baseball team. Broward College Hosts 24-Hour Student Hackathon

SCHOOL NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

A

lthough the name “hackathon” sounds like it involves breaking into a computer, it is actually a venue for self-expression and creativity through technology. The Broward College Computer Science Department recently hosted the 3rd Annual 24-hour Hackathon at the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie. More than 75 students from Broward College, universities, and local high schools worked together in teams to develop a range of applications and software. Team “What’s This?” won Best Overall for its program, a mobile photo recognition application which helps identify and describe items, including foods. “Hackathons are a great way for students to learn about current technology in an environment where they will be surrounded by others who share the same passion for programming,” said Michelle Levine, Broward College professor of computer science and co-organizer of the event. During the event, teams of four to five students pitched an idea and built a prototype to present the next day. No work or coding could be done on projects before the start of the BC Hackathon. Students retain ownership rights to their projects after the event. The following projects won awards:

▸▸ Best Overall: What’s This, a mobile photo recognition application which identifies foods and other foreign objects. Student creators: Adrian Silva, Cecilia Constantine, Jorge Ortiz, Manuel Peña, and Tangy Frederick ▸▸ Most Innovative Idea: Res-Q-Me, a mobile application in which users can register as ‘rescuers’ or ‘rescuees’ during disasters, helping to pinpoint people in distress and coordinate volunteer search efforts. Student creators: Nilson Pires, Camille Almodovar, Amy Carbonell, Susan Moreno, and Michael Werner ▸▸ Best Presentation: BookSwap, an application in which students create a mobile library of textbooks which can be swapped, shared, or sold to students nearby. Student creators: Angel Valles,

Narvin Williams, John Acosta, Leslie Aries, and Dylan Watson ▸▸ Crowd Favorite: Lingo!, an interactive application which translates common phrases and also identifies if the slang has a positive or negative connotation. Student creators: Cesar Marquez, Edgardo Hernandez, Mariana Perez, Oliver Garcia, and Stefan Buggle ▸▸ Code for a Cause: This prize is awarded to a project addressing a social or civic need related to sustainability, education, public health or transportation): Team Teer created a platform which matches donors and volunteers to organizations which best fit their interests and passions. Student creators: Thiago Novaes, Weing Leung, Gustavo Cordido, Darnel Joseph, and Ester Sims

T

he holidays can be stressful even when there isn’t the added stress of an aging parent. In addition, we often have this “idealistic” view of what Christmas, Thanksgiving and other holidays should look like based on commercials, movies, television specials, and songs. It is important to understand and accept that traditions, celebrations, and gatherings might have to change because of your loved one’s situation. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t still be enjoyable. First of all, have an open discussion with your family to explain the situation and need for change. If you are the one who hosts, then perhaps another family member can do so. That way everyone can still get together, but your focus can be on your loved one and not on everything that goes along with the day. If you are the host, then you might need to consider downsizing the numbers. Or, perhaps host a buffet and people can come by at different times throughout the day. It is key to know how much commotion your loved one is able to handle. It also might mean changing the time. A person with dementia may be more tired and frustrated later in the day. So, the family dinner may need to change from 5pm to noon. Wherever the celebration will occur, make sure there is a quiet room/area for the person in the event he/she does get overwhelmed. People can then visit in small groups versus the person being overwhelmed with a big crowd. Another important tip to surviving the holidays is to be flexible. You might have the whole day planned as to what time you will celebrate, who will provide transportation, and what time you will leave. However, an hour into the day, your loved one might indicate that he/she wants to go home. It is important to be flexible and prepared to shift gears. Some families opt to have their traditional celebration, but not include the person with dementia on that particular day. Instead, they will celebrate in a smaller way on a different day (i.e.: the day after Thanksgiving; a couple days after Christmas). Although to many this doesn’t “feel right,” it is important to understand that the person may not be aware of the specific date. In addition, it may be better for them, and the family, to have a low key celebration on a different day than a high stressed, overwhelming one on the actual day. For a person who is unable to participate on the actual day, there are still ways to include him/her. Include a recipe from the person, have everyone sign a card to bring to the person, or include a time for others to share memories of the person and the holidays. Finally, a question that I think is important to ask in regards to the holiday celebrations is, “Is this my need or is this my loved one’s need?” Often time that simple question will help point families in the right direction as to how to include the person in the celebrations. Enjoying the Holidays with an Aging Parent

Overweight and Increased Cancer Risk? DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP

O

n a daily basis, I have conversations with my patients about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight. In most cases, I am instructing them on the need to lose weight. It is not that excess body fat or being little overweight looks ugly, but it’s the implications and consequences that obesity causes is a huge concern. The problem is this excess fat in your body has a brain of its own and unfortunately it is not in your favor. Let me tell you why. Fat in itself can produce inflammatory chemicals, unwanted hormones, and renders itself a great place to store toxins which can contribute to cancer. It is no surprise that there have been several studies revealing that approximately 40% of cancer cases are linked to obese patients. By the way, obesity is defined as a BMI (body mass index) of 30 and above. For most people, a BMI of 30 mean being approximately 30 pounds overweight. A study from the American Cancer Society suggest that being obese or overweight was associated with cancer cases involving more than 630,000 Americans in 2014, and this includes 13 types of cancer. These cancers include: brain cancer, multiple myeloma, cancer of the esophagus, postmenopausal breast cancer, cancers of the thyroid, gallbladder, stomach, liver, pancreas, kidney, ovaries, uterus and colon. Moreover, to add to that statistic, in 2013-2014 about two out of three American adults were overweight or obese. Of the documented cancers in those years, 55 % of women and 24 % of men were associated with being overweight or obese.

Ok, enough scary stuff, what can we do about it? As a Functional Medicine Doctor, I not only treat obese people successfully to help achieve goals of losing weight and assist in mitigating the negative implications of excess body fat but, I also help those that want to be proactive and decrease risk factors that can be detrimental to their overall health. You see it’s not only about losing the excess body fat, but being properly managed by an experienced Functional Medicine Physician. A Functional Medicine Physician that is knowledgeable in not only weight loss treatment, but also in reducing the overall toxic load that will be secreted during weight loss is imperative. This is so important as fat is the storage place of many toxins and hormones. Remember, when one goes to a “weight loss center” it is possible to lose the weight, but have you truly fixed the underlining cause of the weight gain? Have you been treated appropriately to anticipate the overburden of toxins that will be released from fat as you lose weight? If not, then the weight will come back with a vengeance. Does this sound familiar? Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. ASK THE EXPERT

BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

Y

ou are accompanying your child for their regularly scheduled visit to the dentist and you hear those dreaded words “your child has a cavity.” Initial emotions usually consist of anger. You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird, and Monsters Inc); the toothpaste is bubble gum flavored; and the drawer contains 300 dinosaur floss handles, a water irrigation system and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care. After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So, what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then it dawns on you. It is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth, aka “baby” teeth, have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion - chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance? The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and, in most cases, save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients, as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just as important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits which will reward them into their adulthood. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment call (954) 236-3434.

mismatch between the type of inventory of homes for sale and the demand of buyers nationally has caused two different markets to emerge. Trulia (owned by Zillow) revealed that not only is there a shortage of homes on the market in general, but the homes that are available for sale are not meeting the needs of the buyers who are searching. Homes are generally categorized into three groups by price range: starter, trade-up, and premium. In the starter and trade-up home categories, there were significantly more buyers than there were homes for sale, causing a seller’s market. In the premium, or luxury, home categories, the opposite was true as there was a surplus of these homes compared to the buyers who were out searching for their dream homes, which created a buyer’s market. Realtors® in South Florida have noticed this same phenomenon. A “starter home” in South Florida could easily translate “condo” or “townhome” in that there are no single-family homes under $100,000 in most parts of Broward County and certainly in Miami-Dade County. The lowest priced single-family home is located in Summertime Isles, with only 800+ square feet and listed for over $200,000. Two hundred and fiftyeight homes currently for sale in both Davie and Cooper City make for only five months of available homes under $1 million. Homes went to contract after thirty-nine days on the market. In this category, the average listed price is $429,000 in both cities. Homes listed for $1 million and over are on the market more than 217 days, and there are 42 months of available inventory. The average home listed is $1,657,013. According to the National Association of Realtors Existing Home Sales Report, the inventory nationally of existing homes for sale in today’s market is at a 4.2-month supply. Inventory is now 6.5% lower than this time last year, marking the 27th consecutive month of year-over-year decreases. Looking at the latest report from Trulia, we can see that not much has changed. In fact, recent natural disasters across the country have made inventory conditions even more dire. Most gravitate to coastal areas of the country. What has happened in Houston, Puerto Rico and the Florida Keys has postured South Florida into a position of higher housing demands, which result in higher prices. Take Puerto Rico, for instance – only 17% of the island has power. Many residents are relocating and South Florida is the most obvious destination. According to some sources, as many as 10,000 residents have already left since planes began flying again. More than 27,000 have arrived through Port Everglades and the Miami and Orlando airports alone since October 3, according to the governor’s office. Our shortage of inventory before the storms is only worsened with the migration of these homeless victims. Nationally and locally, buyers are searching for starter and trade-up homes and are coming up short with the listings available, which is leading to a highly competitive seller’s market in these categories. Buyers may also be “investors” paying “cash” which further knocks first-time homebuyers needing financing out of the marketplace. With the low inventory, perhaps it is time for you to take advantage and list your home today.

P.S. Call me today. I’ll make you feel right at home.

BY EVAN BARON

Most people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 35 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December and, as such, last minute issues usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement and/ or Parenting Plan. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any timesharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in odd numbered years, such as 2015, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. If you need any further questions answered, please feel free to contact my office. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. ASK THE SHERIFF

BY SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL

2

017 has been an amazing year for the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Thanks to the amazing men and women of BSO, we accomplished so much. In January, we faced our worst nightmare when an active shooter ruthlessly murdered five people and wounded six more innocent victims in the baggage area of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. BSO, local and federal law enforcement agencies and first responders did a phenomenal job rushing into a dangerous and chaotic situation and peacefully apprehended the shooter within just 85 seconds of his first shot being fired, and without incident or any further loss of life. Despite the terrible loss of life from the initial attack, it proved to be one of the finest hours in law enforcement. This year, we also ramped up our efforts in the battle against the very deadly opioid crisis. Together with our important community partners, BSO poured resources into defeating this alarming epidemic, which claimed the lives of more than 500 Broward residents in 2016 alone – roughly double the rate of the prior year. One of our biggest victories this year was the sweeping arrests of 82 heroin dealers and distributors. The idea was to target the suppliers for arrest – not the addicts, who are in need of treatment. As BSO drug detectives and deputies are working at a feverish pace to enforce drug laws and arresting those responsible for selling these dangerous drugs, we are also educating the public through town hall meetings and community forums. Education campaigns also continue in middle and high schools, PTAs and community organizations. We also believe substance abuse treatment is an important part of winning this fight. We understand, however, that there will be no easy victory, but we are confronting this head on in our efforts to secure fruitful results. Broward County also experienced a brutal hurricane season this year. For the second straight year, Broward found itself in the crosshairs of another potentially devastating hurricane. And like last year, BSO showed we were prepared for anything Mother Nature had in store for us. Fortunately, we escaped the brunt of this catastrophic hurricane season, although Broward still experienced Category 2 hurricane conditions from Irma. Our friends in the Florida Keys and Puerto Rico weren’t as fortunate. In their time of need, BSO answered the call for help, rushed to the aid of these hard-hit areas and assisted in whatever manner was needed for their recovery. Through the ups and downs of this year, the men and women of BSO stayed true to their mission to provide the best public safety services to both residents and visitors alike, even when confronted with herculean challenges. I couldn’t be more proud of them. As 2017 draws to a close, I’m excited for what we have in store for next year. In the coming months, BSO will launch several new, groundbreaking initiatives focused on our youth, as well as individuals with special needs. We will open up a video visitation center to make it easier to communicate and interact with individuals incarcerated in our county jails. And we will introduce an exciting new community policing campaign focused on promoting respect and dignity for our diverse communities and our law enforcement officers. These programs and initiatives will expand the top-notch services Broward residents have come to expect from BSO—and more importantly, continue to ensure the safety of all. To all my friends and neighbors: have a healthy, happy and safe holiday season. I’ll see you in the New Year.

DECEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY DAVIE

A

s the holiday season approaches, Davie residents always get excited about our Lighting of the Greens event at Town Hall. It will be held on Saturday, December 2nd. I hope you all join us for a night of fun that will include live performances, free pictures with Santa, a lighted Horse Parade and more. Town Hall will remain lit through the holidays and into the first week of January. We will continue the holiday festivities on Saturday, December 9th during our annual Holiday Snow Play Festival at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Once a year snow falls at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds and it makes a wonderful play area. While at the festival, children and families can also enjoy a skating rink, train ride, variety of children’s activities and FREE pictures with Santa! Parents, are you looking for something fun for your child to do while they are on holiday break from school? If so, look no further! Sunshine’s Winter Camps at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center and the Ivanhoe Community Center offer wonderful day long programs and activities for children in kindergarten - 8th grade.

As we swing into the New Year, don’t miss your chance to sign up your son or daughter for Spring Baseball. Registration is currently taking place for children ages 3 - 15 years old. Our Smart Start division for three and four year olds is a great way to introduce your child to the great game of baseball, while learning basic fundamentals in a fun environment. Smart Start sports encourages parent interaction and will surely get your child ready for t-ball and league play. The Pine Island Multipurpose Center has much more to offer besides youth and adult programs. We also have many wonderful programs and events for seniors. Who says field trips are only for children at camp? Our staff takes groups of seniors on weekly trips to places like Hollywood Beach Boardwalk, Miami Marlins baseball games, local museums, and other area attractions. We also host weekly Friday luncheons and BINGO games, beading and crafting clubs along with card and game clubs. We also have our popular chair exercise program and Tai-Ji-Quan. Stop by the Pine Island Multipurpose Center or call 954-327-3941 for complete program information and listings. As always, remember if it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program or event, just call 954- 327-3941 or visit the Town of Davie newly renovated website at www.davie-fl.gov.
