We Are All Eagles Now

F

ebruary 14, 2018, is a date that will forever be etched in all our minds, just like 9-11. It is virtually impossible to come across a person in the community who wasn’t personally impacted by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Seventeen innocent people – 14 students along with three faculty members – lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. Fifteen additional people were wounded. It is hard for anyone to reconcile what happened with any sense of normalcy or justice. There are many questions still unanswered: How could someone become filled with such hate and rage? Why do we allow teenagers to easily purchase assault weapons? How can we keep our children safe? What keeps us going, however, is what we’ve heard from the friends and family of the victims: we, as a community, are better off having known them. They were coaches who rushed to the aid of defenseless students; seniors with aspirations for higher education; freshman just beginning to discover who they are; athletes; band members; and, most importantly, they were fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and friends. As we slowly start to piece together our new normal, let us never forget the 17 innocent lives lost, along with the thousands of survivors who will forever bear both physical and emotional scars from that fateful day. In the hours and days following the attack, our community rallied together. Now that the days have turned to weeks, we must continue to band together and show our support to the Parkland community. The Eagles will soar once more. Sincerely,

Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

Cooper City to Host 58th Founder’s Day Parade & Festivities BY DEBBY TEICH

N

early 60 years ago, Morris Cooper dreamed of turning a few acres of orange grove and cattle grazing land into a thriving and vibrant community. On March 10, the City of Cooper City will host the 59th Founder’s Day Parade and Festivities to celebrate his success. There will be plenty of activities for the entire family to enjoy all day long at Brian Piccolo Park. “This is a once-a-year event that celebrates this amazing city,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Specialist. “It’s an opportunity for families to spend the day together with neighbors and friends at an event filled with fun entertainment for all ages.” The morning events will be held at the Community Center. They kick off with the 5K Color Run (7:30am) and One Mile Fun Run (8:30am). All proceeds from the event will benefit Cooper City/Davie Relay for Life. From 7:30am10:30am, enjoy a pancake breakfast, sponsored by Boy Scout Troop #118. Tickets will be on sale at the door. write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 3/31/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. Residents Got Informed and Had Fun at the Davie Police and Fire Expo BY DEBBY TEICH

W

hen most Davie residents have an emergency, they call the Davie Police Department or Fire Rescue for help. They recently had an opportunity to meet and learn more about some of the people who serve them at the Town of Davie Police and Fire Expo, which was held at the Public Safety Complex. Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed several demonstrations from Davie’s Fire and Police Department, including: a helicopter, Dive Team, Vehicle Extrication Drill, K-9, SWAT, Police Motorcycle Unit, and Rappelling. They explored fire engines, rescue trucks, SWAT trucks, community response vehicles, the smoke trailer and the Crime Scene Unit. Children tried on gear and visited with Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog. Local and state agencies had tables and booths set up with information about Community Emergency Response Team, child fingerprinting, drowning prevention, Davie Crime Watch, and more. “The Fire and Police Expo gives the community a chance to interact with the Davie Police and Fire Rescue personnel, and an opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes at the Police and Fire Departments,” said Lieutenant Ed Smith, Public Information Officer for the Davie Police Department. “Davie residents and the community have an opportunity to participate in various activities, and enjoy the displays and demonstrations. We hope everyone had a good time.”

Davie Resident Showers the Homeless with Love BY DEBBY TEICH

W

hile many take a hot shower for granted, there are over 2,000 homeless individuals and families in Broward County that do not. Through Showering Love, Jeanne Lewis of Davie has been working to help restore their dignity and hope by meeting them where they are and providing essentials, including a hot shower. The organization converted a bus into a mobile showering unit and offers the homeless an opportunity to clean up and receive fresh clothing. Lewis understands what it is like to be homeless. She had a fancy house, rich husband and luxury cars until a back injury led her to the painkillers and drinking. She lost her husband and the upscale lifestyle. For 10 years, she lived under a bridge in Davie and panhandled to feed herself. “By making poor choices, I went from Park Avenue to a park bench and became homeless,” said Lewis. “I fit the stereotypical vision of a homeless person. I scurried around from place to place, begged for money and slept wherever I could. I vividly remember those dark, lonely, desolate nights and the feeling of hopelessness, of being unwanted and unloved. People graciously gave me food and money, but, without a

After raising $175,000, Lewis was able to buy a bus and retrofit it. The bus includes two showers, one handicapped accessible, a handicap lift, two 300-gallon water tanks, a water heater, a water filter and two macerators. With the exception of a few donations, most of the money has been raised by $20 donations from the community. Since August 2017, the bus has been traveling to churches where the homeless can take a shower and get new socks, underwear and a t-shirt. Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie

I

n July 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create

an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. What is “The Artis Way? ” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization.

▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them.

20 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYDAVIE.COM

▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. ▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect. ▸ “S” is for success and recognition.

How many people are affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia? Every 67 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the number of people ages 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million. Dementia is becoming more and more of an epidemic. Therefore, the more quality care we can offer, the more fulfilling the lives of those with dementia can lead.

avie began installing 10 fire wells in the Oak Hill area in November to aid water distribution for Fire Rescue Services. Please be aware that the equipment will consist of: Foremost Dr24 drill rig, service/chase truck, combination backhoe, two-man crew and a small boom truck/crane. While the work is ongoing, residents will experience some noise that will be emitted mainly from the drill rig motor, which will be working on right of way. As a result of the drilling, some water will pool in the area that is being drilled. The contractor will attempt to keep the work site organized and get the work completed in an expeditious manner. Please be patient with us during this period, as the contractor anticipates 2-3 days per well. Once the work is completed, the sites will be restored to their original condition. This is a great asset to the area that has, for years, depended on canals and a large storage tanker fire truck for fire suppression. This will greatly enhance the town’s ISO rating and may perhaps help to lower some insurance rates. Don’t forget that every Wednesday there is a Jackpot Rodeo from 7pm – 10pm at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds of Davie. It is a great family night out for kids and adults! Included are calf roping, barrel racing, and team roping. All times and dates are subject to change. Five years ago, I brought forth an idea which council adopted as a resolution that recognized the Town of Davie as a Purple Heart Community. In February 2014, the Davie Town Council officially designated Davie Road as a Purple Heart Trail. Banners have been added in the downtown area to honor the Purple Heart recipients. The Town of Davie appreciates the sacrifices that our Purple Heart recipients have made in defending our freedom, and it is only fitting to acknowledge them for their courage and show them the honor and respect that they have earned. It is our duty as Americans to honor, respect, and acknowledge the heroic actions of the men and women who carry the Purple Heart distinction. We recognize the purpose of the Purple Heart Trail is to create a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges, and other monuments. It serves as a reminder to those who use the road system that others have paid a high price for their freedom to travel and live in a free society. If you are concerned about the increased volume and severity of the airplane noise from activity from Fort Lauderdale Airport, please be aware that the town is actively engaged in working on the issue. The Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) is committed to minimizing current and potential noise impacts from operations at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The Aviation Department has installed noise monitoring equipment at two locations in Davie to measure these potential impacts: Tree Tops Park (Western Davie) and the Everglades Mobile Home Park. The Town is also represented on the Broward County Aviation Department Airport Noise Abatement Committee (ANAC). Any concerns you have relating to airport noise can be submitted as an airport noise inquiry. Please call the Noise Hotline at 866-822-7910, or go to their website at www.broward.org/Airport/NoiseInformation/Pages/default.aspx. Please keep in mind, that due to a charter change a few years back, Davie elections are now in November. See you at the polls on November 6, 2018 or request an absentee ballot from the Supervisor of Elections. For more information on any Davie program or event, call 954 327-3941 or visit the Town of Davie’s newly renovated website at www.davie-fl.gov.

SPRING PLANT SALE IN FULL BLOOM!

BY JOHN BRODIE

W

ith the celebrating of the holidays behind us, the New Year is a great time to focus on your health and wellbeing. For many people losing weight is the big objective. We live in a country where a great many people weigh more than they should. If you have been wishing you could get rid of some excess fat but have had little success with dieting, Slender Fit U is the answer! For many years now Slender Fit U has been helping their clients to lose weight and even reduce or eliminate medications with an easy medically supervised weight loss program. On the diet it not uncommon to lose nearly a pound a day. That means with the 46 day program, you could very likely lose 40lbs or more. The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. During the program you will be monitored regularly and coached on what to eat to maximize the effectiveness of the program. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher is often referred to as the “HCG Guru”. A little over 10 years ago Geri quickly lost the extra pounds she wanted to get rid of with an HCG program and she got very excited about helping others do the same thing. In 2010 she opened an office in Davie and a few years later a second office in Coral Springs. Asked for some comments on the program, Ms. Kelleher stated, “The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals. We stay involved with all of our clients; one of the reasons for our high success rate is that we make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest prescription dosage available for weight loss. We also provide injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods.” Here’s a quote from one of Slender Fit U’s clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long

workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” There are two programs to choose from. On the 23 day program women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. In the 46 day program the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40 – 50 pounds for men. Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG / B12 program you will go on a three week maintenance program gradually introducing a higher calorie diet where you will make sure that you do not gain any more than 2 or 3 pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism and in addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long-term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You will also lose the inches around the waist and thighs where excess fat tends to collect. Before starting the diet you will get a physical exam from one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. So how does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low calorie diet during the 23 or 46 day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. Because it is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects. You will also be eating regular foods like eggs, chicken and fish, green vegetables, apples and so forth. Most people experience little or no hunger during the Slender Fit U program because thanks to the HCG they are burning anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat. If you are ready to be on a diet program that really works and works very fast without a lot of exercise and hunger pains, come in and visit Geri Kelleher for a consultation. Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU. com or call 954-423-1376.

CAN DO KID

Cooper City Teen Earns Gold Award by Collecting Chemo Care Packages BY DEBBY TEICH

A

s a member of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida Troop #10425, 17-year-old Ashley Klement is dedicated to making the world a better place. She recently earned a Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. She has joined the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference, both locally and globally. Ashley became a Girl Scout in 1st grade and has been working her way toward a Gold Award. For the Bronze award, she collected Band-Aids for the children in the oncology department at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. For the Silver award, she made dog and cat toys and dog beds for Broward Humane Society. In order to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, she needed to complete a project that would make a mark on her community and create a lasting impact on the lives of others. She had to develop a plan, raise funds, find helpers and take action. She also had to share her experience with others. Ashley is very familiar with the impact of cancer. She lost her aunt and grandfather to

cancer and her grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. For her Gold Award project, she decided to create Chemo Care packages for patients who are receiving chemotherapy. She posted messages on social media, passed out flyers, reached out to family and friends and more. Some of the items she collected included: hand sanitizer, hard candy, lotion, socks with grips, gum, scarves, bandana hats, blankest, Sudoku books, Kleenex, word search books and more. With help from Brownie Troop 10557 and Junior Troop 10749, she was able to fill 100 care packages, which she recently delivered to Cleveland Clinic. “It was a heart-warming experience to deliver 100 care packages by hand,” said Ashley. “Creating this connection made a lonely and perhaps frightening experience easier for patients to endure.” Ashley plans to continue her efforts at the hospital. She is hoping that her sister troops will continue to support her project by bringing care packages or just visiting with patients. She intends to stay active in Girl Scouts and become a Lifetime member. “I have learned so much from being a Girl Scout for 12 years, including leadership skills and a strong sense of values,” said Ashley. “The best part, however, has always been helping others.”

SPRING BREAK ACTIVITY GUIDE

S

pring Break is just around the corner. Many people, from around the country, will soon visit the beautiful beaches of South Florida. Here are some spring break activity ideas for those of us already lucky enough to live here.

Spring Break Day Camp

There are camps and activities for almost any interest. Whether your little one aspires to be the next David Beckham, the next Picasso or the next Gloria Estefan, there is likely a camp or activity right around the corner! Look over the next few pages to find information about areas camps that might interest your child.

Everglades Airboat Ride

Spring Break Ideas for Families Not Traveling

Give the kids the thrill of a lifetime while riding on an airboat through the untouched landscape of the Everglades. You will get to see some of Florida’s most exotic wild life including, of course the American Alligator. For more info contact Everglades Holliday Park at 954-434-8111 choose from multi-star resorts like the Margaritaville Beach Resort or find something a bit less expensive off the coast. Mid-week overnight prices won’t kill the budget either!

Check Out a Museum There are plenty of museum options to choose from in the area. Kids of all ages love the Museum of Discovery & Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection is a fascinating place to see many of the cars made famous in Hollywood films as well as some of the rarest Ferraris and Porsches the world over. Or, your family could check out marine life at the Miami Seaquarium. The opportunities are almost endless and, in many cases, just a short drive away.

Fishing

There are bodies of water almost everywhere you go in South Florida. Almost all of them contain wildlife. There are few better ways to teach the benefits of perseverance and patients than dipping

Video Game Olympics

The Beach

Video games aren’t just for kids! There are tons of entertaining video games that families can play together. Our family likes to buy some movie candy, pop some popcorn and go at it. Favorites for family time on the Xbox or PS4 include sing-along games like American Idol, Sports contest like the Madden football franchise or even Dance Revolution.

Staycation at a local Hotel One of the most exciting parts of traveling is staying in a new place, especially for kids. One thing South Florida has an abundance of is great hotels. Families that don’t have the time or finances to travel during Spring Break can get most of the benefits while staying close to home. Families can 26 MARCH 30 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYAVENTURA.COM OURCITYDAVIE.COM

hooks into the water and waiting for a bite. Many Broward County Parks allow and encourage fishing. Be sure to have the appropriate licenses. For more info on fishing licenses check out www.myfwc.com.

What better thing is there to do in South Florida when the kids are off school than go to the beach? There is certainly something for everyone: Hollywood Beach’s 1920s-style oceanfront promenade Broadwalk will appeal the nostalgic; Laid-back Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a great place to spend the day eating ice cream, reading a book and enjoying a less-busy existence; Pompano Beach offers terrific shopping and dining; the kids could watch mighty cruise ships set sail at Fort Lauderdale Beach; or, families can get away from it all at the John U. Lloyd Beach Sate Park. If you can’t get away, be sure to make this Spring Break one the remember anyway.

Regular Use of Heartburn Medication May Jeopardize Your Health BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP

G

astrointestinal ailments such as heartburn and acid reflux seem so common nowadays. Most people are familiar with medications, such as Prilosec and Nexium. Some individuals have become so dependent on these drugs they take daily dosages in order to cope with the chronic discomfort. But as popular as they are, these drugs classified as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), have been linked to serious health conditions and even death. PPIs are beneficial, because they are potent and very effective in reducing acid in the stomach. What makes these some of the most over-used drugs in the market is that they are readily available over-the-counter and offer quick relief for conditions such as heartburn and indigestion. An estimated 15 million Americans take PPIs every year either by prescription or over-the-counter. Unfortunately, taking these drugs regularly can put you at a higher risk for dementia, osteoporotic fractures, kidney failure, infection, nutritional deficiencies and early death, according to several recent studies. The risk is created not only by the over use of PPIs, but also due to interaction with other drugs. The situation is so alarming the U.S Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has launched a stewardship program aimed at decreasing unnecessary use of PPIs. VA doctors are being very cautious when prescribing PPIs and are removing patients from PPI therapy when there is no clear purpose for their use and patients can tolerate discontinuation. The Food and Drug Administration recommends patients take over-the-counter PPIs for no more than 14 days. No more than three 14-day treatment courses should be used in one year. If you are suffering from a stomach-acid related condition, there are other alternatives to deal with the problem. Changes in lifestyle and better nutrition are a good start, but it is important that you work with a qualified practitioner who can guide you in the right direction. Your condition may require the use of medication or medical grade nutraceuticals and only a professional can dictate what the lowest effective dosage will be, as well as assessing the risks vs. benefits of the drug use. As a functional medicine practice, Bellissimo Medical offers patient advice on how to restore health and balance through proper nutrition, supplementation and lifestyle changes. We do not simply prescribe medication to put a patch on the injury; we do look at family history and underlying causes of conditions. Finding the root of the problem is the only way to effectively treat ailments - simple changes such as eating wholesome foods, having more frequent, smaller meals, taking the right medical grade nutraceutical and cutting back on alcohol may make all the difference in the world. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For information, visit www. BellissimoMedical.com.

We are often asked: “When are the first teeth scheduled to enter the mouth?” or “Which is ‘better,’ late vs. early erupting teeth?” The truth of the matter is that although there are published milestones, there is still a normal variation/range that teeth may be expected to erupt. In terms of which is better, there is no real benefit for early or late eruption. However, extreme deviations may cause a practical challenge as

we will discuss. Let’s start with the primary (or “baby”) teeth. The first primary tooth to erupt is usually the lower central incisor between 5-8 months of age. The teeth will then follow the “rule of twos,” which is that two additional teeth will erupt every two months until around 2-2.5 yrs old. There is a total of 20 primary teeth equally divided between upper and lower arches. After the eruption of the lower central incisors, we will see the eruption of the upper central incisors, the lower lateral incisors (as the name suggests, next to the central incisors) followed by the upper lateral incisors. The pattern will continue from center laterally with the lower erupting earlier than the upper counterparts. Premature eruption of primary teeth occurs in 1:2000. This can occur in two ways. “Natal” teeth are present at birth and “prenatal” teeth erupt in the first 30 days of life. When teeth erupt prematurely, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider (pediatrician or pediatric dentist) as strategies for feeding will need to be addressed, especially if breastfeeding is planned. There are also structures which are present at birth which resemble premature teeth, but are actually not the primary Se Habla Español! teeth. One of the most common examples of this is “Epstein pearls.” They Direct Line are visible cysts located in the upper arch in the front close to where the Special discounted rates for The Greater Hollywood Chamber Members primary teeth are expected Call Denise Caligiuri forto beAdvertising positioned. ThereInfo is no treatment recommended for this as long as there is no interference with feeding and no observed discomfort for the child. in Miami's CommunityAsNewspapers with all published milestones, it is important to acknowledge the fact that these are just averages and that “normal” has a range. We find variation in gender, with females being ahead of males. It is also important to note that deviations in one area may have no bearing on others. For example, there are many children who are either “ahead” or “behind” in dental development, but are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in skeletal growth. They do, however, give us an idea of what to plan for and some guidance on timing of interventional treatment, whether BEST OF dental or orthodontic, when indicated. WESTON

REAL ESTATE

Market Outlook BY ZONA HORTON, P.A., CRS, GRI REALTOR

A

ccording to Steve Harney, the housing crisis is finally in the rearview mirror as the Real Estate market moves into a complete recovery. ▸▸ Home values are up. ▸▸ Home sales are up. ▸▸ Distressed sales (foreclosures and short sales) have fallen to their lowest points in years. This indicates that the market will continue to strengthen in 2018. However, there is one thing that may cause the industry to tap the brakes: a lack of housing inventory. While buyer demand remains strong throughout the winter season, supply in the single-family housing market in South Florida is not keeping up. Many believe that placing their homes on the market in the spring is optimal. Many in Davie and Cooper City realize that closings would hit when school is out – allowing minimal disruption to school-aged children. Buyers would have ample time to register their children for school prior to fall. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) measures buyer foot traffic each month. It receives data on the number of properties shown to a prospective purchaser by a Realtor® (based on the number of lockboxes used). The data reveals the number of buyers out actively looking for a home not just window shopping on the internet. NAR explains: “Foot traffic has a strong correlation with future contracts and home sales, so it can be viewed as a peek ahead at sales trends two to three months into the future.” According to the latest Foot Traffic Report, buyer traffic is greater now than it was during this year’s spring market and there are more buyers out now than at any other time in the last five years. Here is what the experts are saying: ▸▸ National Association of Realtors - “Total housing inventory at the end of November dropped 7.2 percent to 1.67 million existing homes available for sale, and is now 9.7 percent lower than a year ago (1.85 million) and has fallen year-overyear for 30 consecutive months. Unsold inventory is at a 3.4-month supply at the current sales pace, which is down from 4.0 months a year ago.” ▸▸ Joseph Kirchner, Senior Economist for Realtor.com - “The increases in single-family permits and starts show that builders are planning and starting new construction projects, that’s a good thing because it will help to relieve the shortage of homes on the market.” ▸▸ Sam Khater, Deputy Chief Economist at CoreLogic – “Inventory is tighter than it appears. It’s much lower for entry-level buyers.” What might affect buying power? According to Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist of NAR, “The anticipated rise in mortgage rates next year could further cut into affordability if these staggeringly low supply levels persist. Price appreciation is too fast in a lot of markets right now. The increase in homebuilder optimism must translate to significantly more new construction in 2018 to help ease these acute inventory shortages. Demand for your home is more intense at a time when there is very little competition. That could lead to a quick sale for a really good price. If new construction is peaking your interest, please contact your Real Estate professional to see what is being built. She will accompany you to the sites with your best interest in mind. You need an advocate in this fast-paced market. Zona Horton has been successfully selling Real Estate in South Florida for over 30 years. LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Appeal Process BY EVAN BARON

ne of the most misunderstood aspects of the law is the Appeal. Everyone has heard the term, but most people don’t really understand what the process entails. Although everyone technically has the right to appeal a lower court’s decision, only under limited circumstances will the filing of an appeal be successful. Appeals in Florida are filed with the District Courts of Appeal. There are five District Courts of Appeal, which cover the entire state. In Broward County appeals are filed in the 4th District Court of Appeal which is physically located in Palm Beach County. Cases that are appealed in Miami Dade County would be appealed to the 3rd District Court of Appeal, which is located in Miami Dade County. There are certain deadlines which must be followed in order to file an appeal. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date that a final order is signed by the Court. I sometimes get individuals who call me to inquire about an appeal from an order signed six months before. Unfortunately, I must inform that they missed the deadline and so the order in question has now become final. Except under limited circumstances only final orders can be appealed. If a judge rules unfavorably in a matter during a hearing, that ruling cannot usually be appealed until a final order is signed.

weston 2015 bestof weston

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

An appeal is not a re-trial of the case. An appeal does not require witnesses to come to court and give testimony all over again. It is not a “DO OVER.” In an appeal you are asking a three-judge panel to review the lower courts decisions to determine if there were any errors of law. If a judge does not allow certain testimony or evidence to be introduced into a trial, that may be an error of law and can be appealed. If a judge listens to testimony and does not believe a witness, that is a matter of credibility and cannot be appealed. As you can see, the process is very technical in nature. Only issues which are preserved can be appealed. If in a divorce the couple voluntarily enters into a Marital Settlement Agreement, neither one can subsequently file an appeal, since an Agreement was reached. Such an agreement is binding upon the parties. If, however, the parties do not reach an Agreement, and a Judge issues a Final Judgment, either party may file an appeal and question the Court’s ruling. Statistics show that only a very small percentage of appeals are in fact granted. In most instances, if an appeal is granted; the case is sent back to the trial court for further proceedings; consistent with the Appellate Court’s ruling. There generally is no time limit for an Appellate Court to decide and waiting 12 months for a decision is not all that unusual. I strongly suggest that if you are considering an appeal, make sure you are within your 30-day window and hire an experienced attorney.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

How Does Dementia Affect Executive Functioning? BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES

A

person with dementia often experiences issues related to executive functioning. Planning, problem solving and executing tasks are all elements of executive functioning. These are all skills needed to complete many tasks related to finances and bill paying. Even if a person is not displaying significant issues with memory, there could be problems with the executive functioning. And often this is one of the first signs that family members notice. There are several indicators to look for that your loved one may be having some difficulty. Early in the disease, the person may need longer to figure out the amount to pay when out to a restaurant. Calculating the tip becomes more challenging. When paying in cash, processing the bills and change to put out might require more time than usual. In one example, a gentleman was paying his bill at the register and was using cash. The total came to $21.52. While going through his money, he knew that he needed to leave one of one kind of bill (a $20) and two of another ($1.00 bills). However, the gentleman took several seconds going through his bills and ended up giving the cashier two $20.00 bills and one $1.00 bill instead. The processing and planning difficulty is common. Bill paying takes many of the skills related to executive functioning, therefore, this is an aspect of the person’s life that should be looked at. Paying the bill late or not paying the correct amount are common mistakes that are made. In addition, checks not being signed or filled out completely are other issues seen frequently in persons with dementia. Having a legal representative named is a step that needs to occur for most adults, especially those with some cognitive issues. If this has not been completed, an elder law attorney can be of assistance. The Power of Attorney can act on behalf of the person as needed and in most cases, can have communication with banks, other financial institutions, and companies. It is important to provide help to your loved one, but also to maintain their dignity. Giving up financial control is a difficult step in the disease. Having a conversation with the person about the importance of financial security may be the first step and then to offer assistance. Family members often take away the task completely which may leave the person feeling diminished. Perhaps set up a day or two a month to pay bills together. This will allow the person to maintain independence but assuring that the bills are paid properly. If there are more difficulties, you may consider having the bills mailed directly to you to be certain that they are not being misplaced. It may be necessary for a family member to write out the bills and then have the person sign them. And as the disease progresses, the task will most likely need to be completed solely by the responsible party. ASK THE SHERIFF

Celebrating BSO’s Best and Bravest BY SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL

T

his month, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Annual Awards Ceremony will honor more than 100 deputies, firefighters and civilian employees who faced great danger, saved lives and performed exceptional acts last year. These extraordinary men and women are the best and bravest in their fields and exemplify the risks willingly shouldered by those working in public safety. Heroic acts are often a part of the job. Without hesitation, these award recipients place their lives at great risk day in and day out to ensure the betterment of our community, but they do far more than just protect the public from danger. They work tirelessly to make Broward a better place to live. They are the moral fiber of this county. They protect us. They keep us safe. They help us. Without a doubt, this ceremony is one of my favorite annual events. It is an opportunity to celebrate exemplary achievements and heroic efforts. But, equally important, it is also a chance to acknowledge that hard work and selflessness does not go unnoticed. Far too often around our nation, news reports focus on the negative stories – the few bad apples – and not the vast majority of great people that do an amazing job daily. Stories about individual misdeeds typically get airtime. However, the unglamorous, quiet – yet important – efforts we do daily, like helping a homeless person, or finding an Alzheimer’s patient who was lost, or calming a panicked person who is calling 9-1-1 desperately in need of help, or saving a heart attack victim, never merit news coverage. Yet those small daily deeds make meaningful differences in so many real lives. As a former high school football coach, I see those who work in public safety as being like an offensive lineman. Much like an offensive lineman works the trenches to ensure the safety of the quarterback and are key cogs in a functioning offense, so too are the public safety officials who put everything on the line to safeguard our communities and ensure a prosperous society. Both, however, often are only noticed when there’s a breakdown – not for their countless successes they achieve. So, while it is important to celebrate the achievements of the men and women of BSO and reinforce their importance to the agency and community, it is also equally important for us to share their heroic and inspiring stories with the public. It is only through the mutual respect and better understanding of our job and the people behind our badges that we as a community can build upon these successes. It is an absolute honor to work with such an unselfish and giving community who dedicate their lives to keep our communities safe, and I’m excited to honor their achievements. I invite you all to join me in the celebration of BSO’s best and to meet the real men and women who make BSO the finest public safety agency in the nation. I hope to see you there.
