very year around this time we take a deep breath and wonder what happened. Summer is over; the vacation pictures and memories have moved to the back of our minds; the kids are back in school; the Halloween sugar rush has barely worn off and we are in full preparation for Thanksgiving. What? Thanksgiving already? The entire year seems to have gone by in the blink of an eye. Another year of family, friends and togetherness; of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. When we sit down this year with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a delicious turkey feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year and truly enjoy each other. Happy Thanksgiving!

n most days, the Touch A Heart Foundation is dedicated to raising funds to enhance the lives of less fortunate children in South Florida. On November 14, however, it will focus on pampering more than 200 women during the 7th Annual Touch A Heart Spa Day. The women will be treated to an “exspa-rience” they will never forget as they help make the Foundation’s mission a reality. In return for a donation, the women will receive an entire day of pampering, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at a private home in Southwest Ranches. They will have an opportunity to relax, shop, eat, and receive salon services. Tickets are $110 for 2 Spa services, plus lunch and shopping or $60 for lunch and shopping (no services). Guests can come for the day or just a couple of hours. Some of the services include blow-outs, make-up, facials, manicures, pedicures, spray tans and massages from professionals who are all donating their time. There will be spiritual readings, Reiki sessions, acupuncture and complimentary yoga classes. The women will also have an opportunity to shop for holiday gift items like belts, hand bags, jewelry, home accessories and purchase the Touch A Heart cookbook, which contains favorite recipes from around the country. All of the proceeds from the event go toward helping Touch A Heart families. “It is a great way to relax and give back at the same time,” said Lisa Samuels, foundation co-director. “This year there are more families in need than ever before. We need as much community support as possible.” During last year’s holiday season, Touch A Heart was able to adopt over 100 families and 10 day care centers/group homes. Volunteers purchased, wrapped and delivered over 1100 gifts, gift certificates and holiday meals for each of the families who otherwise would not be able to experience the joy of the holidays. His sisters were involved in Girl Scouts and earned Lifetime Achievement awards for their efforts. They were all inspired by his father, who is currently the oldest Eagle Scout in South Florida. Last month, Jeff listened with pride as the South Florida Council honored his father in a special presentation at Pine Island District’s monthly roundtable meeting. Ninety-three-year-old James Pershing Gravenstreter captivated the audience as he told his story to nearly 100 adult Scouters. He spoke about scouting during the Great Depression and how it became an important part of America’s recovery. He told them about his rise to the rank of Eagle Scout in 1933 at the young age of 15. He was the first Eagle Scout in his unit, Troop 37, and was given the title of “Chief South Florida’s Oldest Eagle Scout, First Eagle” by his scoutmaster. In addition to the required James Pershing Gravenstreter. merit badges to earn the Eagle Rank, he earned an additional 15 merit badges. He was honored at the time by having bronze, silver and gold palms added to his Eagle Scout accomplishment. At the end of his presentation, he encouraged the adult leaders to take advantage of all of the great training opportunities they have available to them that he did not have when he was active. “I very proud of my father,” said Jeff Gravenstreter. “He has accomplished so much in his lifetime.” Jeff dropped out of Scouting when he was 13, but became involved again after his

sons Jon and Jeff were born. He used it as an opportunity to spend quality time with his boys and teach them outdoor skills. Both of them became Eagle Scouts. “Now that I am adult Scouter, I realize the importance of being marked as an Eagle Scout and I am proud that both of my sons attained that rank,” said Jeff. “Scouting taught them so many life skills. They learned the importance of working as a team, setting goals, thinking positively, helping others and so much more.” Although Jeff’s sons are grown, he is still well known in South Florida Council as an active adult leader and a trainer of adult leaders. health & Wellness Dispelling the Myths of Hormones – What Will You Choose? By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

T

he use of hormones has sparked much debate on their efficacy and safety. There are many myths circulating about hormones that have no founded evidence or truth to support these statements. I am continuing this series to dispel the common myths surrounding hormone therapy.

RelaxFORYour Wrinkles THE HOLIDAYS

Myth – “Progesterone is only needed for women in menopause and with a uterus“.

This is incorrect. Progesterone (not Progestin) is an essential hormone for every woman. It affects practically every organ in the body. When a woman’s progesterone level is inadequate, it can severely disrupt her quality of life. Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, weight gain, irregular periods, headache, PMS and insomnia are common. Progesterone is also necessary in the production of hormones such as: DHEA, Testosterone, Estrogen and Cortisol. Women who are prescribed estrogen need bioidentical progesterone not just to negate the effects of estrogen on the uterus but to achieve optimal hormonal balance.

Myth – “Any Doctor can effectively prescribe hormones.”

This is simply not true. Hormone therapy is a specialty of its own because of its intricacies. It is not enough to simply prescribe a treatment that is not tailor-made to the individual. A physician specializing in Functional Medicine takes into account the whole person. The testing and administration of hormones may just be the first step in achieving overall balance and health optimization. Further testing may be necessary to look at adrenals, thyroid, potential allergies and toxins, and much more. In addition, lifestyle and levels of supplementation are also considered. Each client is unique as their plan of care should be. For review of medical articles on the subject of Bio-Identical Hormones , please visit our web site at www.BellissimoMediSpa.com. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine and Sottopelle Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy. Their practice is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. There will be historical reenactments, a Police and Fire Expo, free concerts, trail rides, professional rodeos, bike rallies, Craft and Green Fair, hayrides and more. Less than a year later on September 16, 1926, the Great Miami Hurricane struck, leaving Davie with flooded fields, dead cattle, and ruined homes. At the next session of the legislature, Davie residents petitioned and were granted the dissolution of the municipality. The town was officially charted in 1961. Simon Hackley has lived in Davie for 55 years and remembers when the town was chartered. “It was a wonderful day,” said Hackley. “We celebrated then and I am looking forward to celebrating again. Davie is a wonderful place to live.”

community news South Broward Hospital District Adopts Lowest Millage Rate in Its History November 2011 | To Advertise in Davie Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | www.davietowntimes.com

T

he Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, which oversees the operations for Memorial Healthcare System, has voted to adopt the lowest millage rate in the history of the District. The new rate of 0.7500 represents a 41.1 percent decrease from last year’s rate of 1.2732. The historic measure, passed on September 26, coupled with Memorial’s successful strategic vision over the past few years, has resulted in a new trend for the District. Fiscal year 2012 will mark the second year in a row in which the District minimizes its reliance on tax revenue and absorbs 100 percent of the uncompensated care delivered in all its hospitals. Tax revenue will fund uncompensated care solely at the District’s South Broward Community Health Services primary care centers and Memorial Manor nursing home. Uncompensated care provided by the District in fiscal year 2012 is projected to reach nearly $1 billion. The approved rate will net approximately $22.4 million in tax revenue, representing only 1.5 percent of total budgeted net revenue for the District. “For the past decade, the South Broward Hospital District has been on a path to reduce the millage rate with the aim of providing relief to taxpayers who annually face numerous economic challenges,” said Frank V. Sacco, president and CEO, Memorial Healthcare System. “This historic vote is the culmination of years of fiscal responsibility and strategic management that will further solidify our mission of providing healthcare to all south Broward residents.” The Board of Commissioners commended Memorial’s executive team for its tenacity and courage in managing the

healthcare system in a responsible financial manner that led to Monday’s historic vote. “To be part of a record-setting millage rate is something special,” said Vice Chairman Alfredo Avalos. For homeowners, the commissioners’ vote helps to provide relief in property taxes. Here are two common examples: ▸▸ A south Broward County homeowner whose home’s assessed “Save our Homes” value is $300,000 and whose taxable value after homestead exemptions is $250,000 would pay $187.50 under the new millage rate, versus $318.30 in property taxes last year – provided the taxable value remained the same from 2010. ▸▸ Accounting for the most recent “Save our Homes” annual increase, which shows that If the home’s taxable value after homestead exemptions went up 1.5 percent (from $246,000 in 2010 to $250,000 in 2011), then the homeowner would have paid to the District $313.21 in property taxes in 2010 (at the 1.2732 millage rate) and would pay $187.50 in 2011 (at the 0.7500 millage rate). Memorial Healthcare System is the fifth-largest public healthcare system in the country. It is a national leader in quality care and patient satisfaction and has been ranked in Modern Healthcare magazine’s list of Best Places to Work in Healthcare. Its facilities include Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Miramar, Memorial Hospital Pembroke and Memorial Manor nursing home. Davie Prepares for Annual Holiday Celebration By Debby Teich

F

or 23 years, Davie residents have gathered to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season during the Holiday Lighting of the Greens & South Florida Trail Riders Jingle Bell Parade. More than 4,000 people are expected to attend the Dec. 4 event, which showcases Davie’s unique equestrian and agricultural community. They will have an opportunity to watch the Mayor and Town Council turn on over 250,000 holiday lights and decorations as they officially proclaim it “holiday time” in Davie. The event kicks off with the Annual Holiday Tree, Menorah and Kinara Decorating Contest. On Nov. 30, school and civic groups will start decorating the menorahs, kinaras and 6 ft. white pine trees that line the entrance to the Davie Town Hall in the theme of “Celebrate Love, Peace and Kindness.” Last year, over 45 schools and groups participated in this holiday event. The groups make all of their own decorations and the Town provides the lights. Holiday trees, menorahs and kinaras are free to the groups decorating, but are limited and will be distributed on a first-come basis. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorations. The festivities continue on Dec. 4, when Davie residents are invited to visit the beautifully adorned holiday trees, menorahs, and kinaras. The night kicks off at 6:15 p.m. with the Jingle Bell Parade, when the South Florida Trail Riders parade their decorated horses through the streets and Santa Claus arrives on a fire engine. After the parade, residents can have their pictures taken with Santa in the Town Hall Building for a small fee or just visit with the big guy for free. The winners of the tree decorating contest will also be announced. For those who miss snow, 20 tons of the “white stuff” will be blown for the children

to enjoy during the event. There will be two supervised snow play areas: one for children ages 1 to 5 and another for children ages 6 to 12. There will also be traditional refreshments, a holiday magic show, a petting farm, bounce houses, climbing walls and more – all at no charge. “It is a great way for friends and families to get together and welcome the holidays,” said Special Events Director Bonnie Stafiej. Elizabeth Harris waits all year for the event. She remembers attending as a child and now brings her four children to see the lights and participate in the festivities. “We always have a great time picking out our favorite tree,” said Harris. “The kids also love getting dressed in hats and mittens to play in the snow.” All times, dates and activities are subject to change. To be a holiday sponsor or sign up to decorate a holiday display, call 954-797-1163 or visit www.davie-fl.gov.

legally speaking Aggressive Driving – A Problem for Police and South Florida Residents November 2011 | To Advertise in Davie Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | www.davietowntimes.com

By Howard Citron

N

o one is safe when drivers act recklessly and aggressively on Florida highways. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), aggressive driving is a factor in 56% of fatal car crashes nationwide. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies weaving, tailgating, distracted driving, unsafe lane changing and speeding as primary aggressive driving behaviors. The NHTSA adds that aggressive drivers are more likely to drink and drive. The attitudes of drunk drivers can quickly escalate into episodes of road rage resulting in the potential for bumping other vehicles and even resorting to the use of a firearm from behind the wheel.

Recently, Florida police departments were highlighted by the NHTSA as examples of law enforcement agencies using innovative methods to cut down on the high number of aggressive and reckless driving incidents in their jurisdictions. Police officers could be found on lawn mowers, sitting on park benches or sitting on road construction vehicles watching traffic. They would then call ahead to policemen in squad cars to apprehend reckless drivers. The results were effective and increased the number of aggressive driving prosecutions in our state. The Florida Highway Patrol has continued to take on aggressive drivers in various safety campaigns, including Operation Safe Ride, the Aggressive Driving Crackdown and the Blitz on Aggressive Drivers (BAD). Despite these efforts and other means of educating the public in removing aggressive and reckless drivers from Florida’s roadways, aggressive and dangerous driving remains a major concern. In fact, Miami, Florida was named the Worst Road Rage City in a national survey. Aggressive driving is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious injury and death. According to the NHTSA, one of the best ways to avoid becoming a victim of an aggressive driver is to “put your pride aside” and simply move out of the way if a driver begins to tailgate or is violating the rules of the road. The NHTSA also suggests avoiding eye contact and/or making physical gestures in response to an aggressive driver in an effort to avoid a confrontation. If you find yourself driving in an aggressive manner, you should remain calm, monitor your speed and concentrate on driving safely. If necessary, pull off the road until you calm down. Vehicles are meant to get drivers and their passengers safely to their destinations and not as weapons. Citron & Bloom has offices in Weston and Coral Springs. ung cancer results when abnormal cell growth invades and destroys normal lung tissue. An accumulation of abnormal cells is called a tumor. As a tumor grows, it can impair lung function, resulting in breathing difficulty and decreased oxygen in the blood. The cancer can also spread to other organs and eventually cause death. Lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer in the United States and the leading cause of cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates 17,150 of the more than 220,000 new cases this year will be diagnosed in Florida. Most lung cancer cases occur in smokers (cigarette, pipe or cigar), however, some occur in non-smokers as well.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Live Web Chats

Symptoms of lung cancer vary, but may include persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, and coughing up blood. Most lung cancers cause no symptoms until they are fairly large or advanced. Many patients will have lung nodules and/or spots on the lung. Most are not cancer but in certain circumstances they should be tested to see what they are. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, a highly specialized team of physicians collaborates to provide patients with coordinated diagnosis and treatment plans. The Interventional Pulmonology Program is one of the top interventional programs in the state of Florida through which our multidisciplinary team offers a full spectrum of minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic services. One minimally invasive procedure for diagnosing lung cancer is called endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) guided biopsy, which allows physicians to more accurately identify lung cancers without surgery. “During the ultrasound guided biopsy, a flexible scope is inserted into the windpipe and pushed up along the walls until we access the appropriate airway,” explains pulmonologist Eduardo Oliveira, MD, who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of lung cancer. “With the help of ultrasound imaging, we can locate the suspicious lymph node or spot on the lung and use a very small needle to biopsy the tissue.” Tumors can also be diagnosed with CT scan guided needle biopsy. If necessary, Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), also called thoracoscopy, can be used to biopsy nodules in the lung. Special telescopes, video cameras, and instruments are used to look and operate inside the chest through small incisions eliminating the need to cut muscle and spread ribs. This results in less post-operative pain and a faster recovery.

Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are used to treat lung cancer. Surgery involves removal of cancerous tissue, whereas radiation therapy involves destruction of cancer cells. In chemotherapy, a patient takes oral or intravenous drugs that target rapidly dividing or multiplying cancer cells throughout the body. Treating lung cancer can involve one or all of these interventions. If the cancer can be completely removed, surgery provides the best chance for cure. The VATS techniques described above also can be used to remove the tumor through very small incisions. For patients with tumors in major airways, a lung-sparing procedure called “sleeve lobectomy” may be used. “In the past, the surgical alternative would have been to remove the entire lung,” says Edward Savage, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon. “This procedure allows us to remove the tumor by removing the cancerous part of the lung while preserving the non-cancerous portion, minimizing the loss of breathing capacity.”

Hand-Painted Shades

What about a beautiful hand-painted Roman shade for your entryway designed for you by our artist to reflect the artwork of your favorite painting that hangs just off the foyer? It’s easy to get creative with custom Roman shades from Hunter Douglas Design Studio. Beautiful Windows is one of the few select dealers offering this exclusive line. The shades are available in over 300 different soft fabrics that hang beautifully.

Night & Day Shades

Select from five distinctive styles - flat, hobble, batten front or back and the Night/Day shade. This shade is a 2-in-1 Roman shade. During the day you get soft light filtering in through the sheer and at night you lower the opaque Roman shade. How perfect is that?

Coordinating Valances and Panels

To enhance the beauty of the shade we offer coordinating valances with tapes and trims that are perfect to suit your décor. Our designers can add side panels for you to frame out the window. These panels remain stationary while the privacy is controlled by the shade. These new Romans are made with the innovative cording system for enhanced child and pet safety.

housands of homeowners in our community are 20-50% upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they don’t know or are unsure of their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage and no other payments? Also, once the market turns around, think of all the equity you could build back up years from now?

For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “stripping” the lien, a “cram down” or “strip down.” In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, second mortgages and lines of credit against a principal residence can be eliminated up to the appraised value of the home. Many bankruptcy courts follow a rule that makes a second mortgage or line of credit totally unsecured if the principal amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the fair market value of the personal residence. To qualify, the court will generally require proof that the home is worth less than the amount owed on the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 30% or more, many borrowers could qualify for this option. Tax liens and association liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 reorganization proceedings to the extent that the lien does not attach to equity in the property. More importantly, if your income level qualifies, you will be able to catch up on any past due mortgage payments through affordable installments spread out over 3-5 years. This allows you and your family to stay in your home, and none of your creditors will be able to contact you, harass you with annoying phone calls or proceed with a foreclosure during this bankruptcy protection period. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure, including when is the right time to file for bankruptcy protection, are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online at www.arcialawfirm.com. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation and to receive your FREE DVD. Legally Speaking A Difficult Problem By Evan Baron

I

t seems that almost everyday we read about a domestic violence case in the newspaper. Of course we only read about the cases which involve celebrities. This is not a problem which only involves celebrities, but an issue which can be found in almost every bedroom community. Of course a great deal of domestic violence goes unreported. There is also the other side of the coin. This is a law which can at times be misused to obtain the “upper hand” in a divorce. Judges will almost always err on the side of caution when required to make a decision about whether or not to issue an injunction for protection against domestic violence, commonly referred to as a restraining order. This at times can cause an abuse of the judicial system for personal gain. The law concerning domestic violence injunctions is very specific as to what must be proven to obtain an injunction and who may obtain one. This cannot be obtained because your spouse is being argumentative or disrespectful. Words, even harmful words, will not rise to the level that is required by law. An individual seeking an injunction must swear under oath, in a written petition, that he or she has been the victim of domestic violence or has a reasonable belief that he or she is in imminent danger. This applies to husbands and wives, individuals residing together, couples who have had children together, divorced couples, or any person related by blood or marriage. I have been involved with cases involving siblings, parents and children and girlfriend and boyfriend. Domestic violence is defined as a battery (intentional, unwanted touching), aggravated battery (deadly weapon), assault (threats of bodily harm with the apparent ability to carry out the threat), stalking or any criminal offense which results in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

The person seeking the injunction is the Petitioner and he or she must present to a judge sufficient allegations to warrant the issuing of an injunction. This is done by an ex parte proceeding, which means it is without the opportunity for the respondent (alleged abuser) from defending him/herself. If the Judge is satisfied, a temporary injunction will be issued for a maximum of 15 days. The law requires that the respondent be allowed a hearing within the 15 day period. At this hearing the Judge will be able to hear from both sides, and decide if the injunction should be extended or whether it should be dismissed. If extended it could become permanent and only removed upon order of the court. The temporary injunction will require the respondent to vacate his/her residence until the hearing takes place. During this time (approximately 15 days), the Respondent will not be allowed to have any direct or indirect contact with his/her spouse. If there is a minor child he/she may be prohibited from contact with the child. If you have any questions please feel free to contact my office for a free consultation at 954 385-9160.

real estate Picking the Right Agent – Time to Play Twenty Questions! By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, Realtor

T

November 2011 | To Advertise in Davie Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | www.davietowntimes.com

he National Association of Realtors® (NAR) recently released a report which discussed a troubling trend: Cancelled contracts are increasing dramatically. NAR defined the issue: “Contract failures – cancellations caused largely by declined mortgage applications or failures in loan underwriting from appraised values coming in below the negotiated price.” It is extremely important that both buyers and sellers pick the right real estate professional to assist them with their real estate needs. However, what questions should you, the consumer, ask to ensure that you are hiring the right one?

Here Are A Few Suggestions: ▸▸

How long have you been in the business? (Do not let the agent’s answer mislead you into thinking the agent has done a ton of business. Therefore, your next question should be…) ▸▸ How many sales transactions were you involved in last year? And for the five years prior to that? How many homes have you sold in my neighborhood in my neighborhood of interest? ▸▸ (As a Seller) How many transactions in the past five years have you handled that fall into my price range? ▸▸ Are you a full-time sales associate and do you derive your primary source of income from Real Estate Sales? ▸▸ Do you have Real Estate Investments? ▸▸ What are your sales goals for this year, and how will you obtain them? ▸▸ How important is continuing education to you and how do you continually improve and update your Real Estate knowledge and skills? ▸▸ Are you computer savvy? ▸▸ With what social media sites do you currently associate? ▸▸ What designations do you have and how does that affect your representation of me? ▸▸ What is your system for follow up which will keep me informed of the process of my sale or purchase? ▸▸ Tell me about your support staff and what is their interaction with me, if any? ▸▸ How many listings do you presently have? ▸▸ How many buyers are you currently working with? ▸▸ How do I know you will do what you say? Do you abide by the Realtor® Code of Ethics? ▸▸ How often will you communicate with me and by which method? ▸▸ Where do most of your buyers come from? Where do you advertise yourself to obtain these buyers? ▸▸ Do you like working better with Buyers or Sellers? ▸▸ Why did you choose to work for “XXX” company? ▸▸ (As a Seller) Do you have a proven marketing strategy for selling my home? It is imperative in this housing market that both buyers and sellers use a true real estate professional to guarantee that the deal will actually reach the closing table. Call me today if you, or someone you know, are looking to buy or sell a residence. I am home for you! Call 954-306-7298 or send an email to zonster@aol.com.

n South Florida, the month of November means cooler weather and the start of the planting season. It is the perfect time to plant annuals, vegetables and herbs or to create a container garden. Davie’s DynaServ Nursery and Accessories offers a large selection of trees and plants to fit every outdoor lifestyle and budget. It is a one-stop-shop for all of your gardening needs. DynaServ has a wide variety of foliage, from conventional landscape material to exotic items. Derek Lewis, garden center manager, hand picks much of the foliage. “We look for high quality plants and trees at affordable prices,” said Lewis. The nursery sells trees and shrubs; annuals and perennials; vegetable plants and herbs; palms; shrubbery and hedge material; tropical plants and much more. Once the foliage is selected, customers can visit the garden center to choose from a large selection of gift and decor items to add to the landscape. The Center has statues, benches and bridges, as well as ceramic and glazed contemporary and traditional pottery in many colors and styles. It also has other garden related accessories like wind chimes, fertilizer, mulch, pesticides, planters, ornaments, unique one-of-a-kind garden gifts, accessories and more. Customers can take a break from the heat in DynaServ’s new shade structure. The relaxing cool zone is filled with new items from Vietnam, as well as some of the Center’s many fountains, which range in size from 36 to 96 inches. “The fountains provide a great way for customers to relax at home as they listen to the sounds of flowing water in their backyards,” said Derek.

Choose from hundreds of containers for both inside and outside.

Derek Lewis, garden center manager, displays some of the many colors of impatiens.

Take a break from the heat in DynaServ’s new shade structure.

DynaServe has a large selection of fountains.

Impatiens are among the most requested plants this time of year, because they are inexpensive, easy to grow and usually last for several months. They are also versatile and can be used in planting beds, containers or hanging baskets. DynaServ has a wide variety of impatiens in 15 different colors. Some customers prefer a monochromatic look, while others like to mix and match. “Impatiens can have a powerful impact on any garden,” said Derek. “My favorite combination is red, lipstick and violet, but it is all a matter of taste.” This is also an ideal time of year to plant herb and vegetable gardens. They are a great way for customers to save some money and grow their own organic food. Herbs and vegetables can be planted in raised beds, planting boxes, pots or containers in addition to or instead of foliage. DynaServ sells a large assortment of herbs (thyme, parsley, purple and Italian basil, cilantro and more) and vegetables (tomatoes, pepper, jalapenos, lettuce, eggplant, okra and more), as well as organic soil. Container gardening has become a popular trend and DynaServ has everything you need. From simple to elaborate, the possibilities are limitless. The Center has hundreds of beautiful containers and flowers that can bring life to a dead space or unused corner. Containers can be placed inside the house or outside as an architectural feature in the middle of a planting bed. Derek encourages customers to use more than one plant to create interest. DynaServe will even deliver the container and materials and set it up at the customer’s home.

DynaServ helps customers design their own gardens.

One of the many ways that DynaServ sets itself apart from its competitors is through its commitment to customer service. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and helps customers select the right plant, fertilizer and soil for their landscape or the right plants and flowers to create a unique design in a container. They also offer instruction on proper plant care and recommend plant combinations. Many customers bring in photos or specifications and the staff helps them solve their landscaping problems. After they leave the nursery, they can call or email with any questions or concerns. DynaServ also keeps them informed of any unusual infestations, like the white fly, and how to control them. “We want to make sure that our customers can successfully grow whatever they purchase,” said Derek. “I receive daily emails from customers with a variety of questions and I am happy to answer all of them.” DynaServ’s staff understands its responsibility to give back to the community. On Earth Day, DynaServ regularly donates plants and soil to be distributed. It is currently maintains Shenandoah Park and Orange Park at no cost in a spirit of cooperation to support the Town of Davie during these tough economic times. It donated a fountain, plants and landscaping to the Veteran’s Hospital and much more. DynaServ Nursery and Accessories is located at 1000 South Flamingo Road in Davie, just south of I-595. f you are tired of seeing a new doctor every time you visit your physician, make sure you check out the offices of Dr. Craig S. Shapiro for all of your hearing, and ears, nose and throat medical needs. In practice for 19 years, Dr. Shapiro offers a full range of medical, diagnostic and surgical services that will cover everyone in your family, from pediatric issues to hearing devices. “We are a one-stop shop for everything from children to grandparents,” said Dr. Shapiro. Dr. Shapiro is a part of South Florida ENT Associates, a group consisting of 43 board certified ear, nose, and throat physicians in South Florida. Located throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties, SFENTA’s physicians have been caring for patients in the area for over 30 years.

Dr. Shapiro’s Care Center is located at 500 N. Hiatus Road, Suite 101 in Pembroke Pines

that they will want to use,” he explained. Dr. Shapiro began his career in 1985, after receiving a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Southeastern University of Health Sciences, and then completed his one year rotating internship at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan, as well as a four year residency through the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and Facial Plastic Surgery which included a one year of General Surgery at Northeastern Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Shapiro is board certified with the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology. He also holds professional memberships with the following associations: Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Broward County Medical Association, Florida Society of Otolaryngologist/Head, Neck, Surgery and the Greater Miami ENT Society. He invites patients to come see what he and his dedicated staff of 9 employees are all about for any hearing, or ENT needs. Most of his staff have been with him since he opened his doors. “We have a very homey, caring type of office,” said Dr. Shapiro. “I think it shows in the care we give. Patients who come to this office know everybody.”

Dr. Craig Shapiro

While some SFENTA Care Centers use a multi-physician approach, Dr. Shapiro is the only doctor on staff at his Care Center in Pembroke Pines. Located in a 2,600 square foot office at 500 N. Hiatus Road, Dr. Shapiro offers general ENT medical services for anyone from infants, to children, parents and grandparents. They can help with issues including allergies, nasal congestion, sinus symptoms, hearing loss, sleep apnea, snoring and much more. Best of all, patients get to establish a one-onone relationship with Dr. Shapiro. “You are not seeing multiple ear, nose and throats doctors in a practice, you are seeing only me and you get my full attention,” he said. At Dr. Shapiro’s Care Center, patients will also find the Clear Tone Hearing Center, a full service facility offering sales, service, and repair on all brands and styles of hearing devices, in affordable prices. Not sure if your hearing device is working, or if you even need one? Dr. Shapiro thoroughly examines all patients before making any recommendations to make sure there are no medical issues, including signs of infection, hearing issues, tumors, ear wax or more. From there, the staff can perform a full hearing evaluation and make an individualized recommendation for each patient. Dr. Shapiro says hearing devices have made huge technological strides in recent years and are now smaller, more advanced and comfortable to use. They also offer the latest technology, with many devices now 100% digital and able to offer connectivity and streaming to cell phones, computers, house phones and televisions. Their in-house lab can also custom design noise-reducing ear plugs, or ear plugs for swimmers. Before sending patients home with a new hearing device, the staff at the Clear Tone Hearing Center lets them try it out with a number of different noise scenarios they can simulate right in their offices. “We try to make it as close to their environment as possible,” Dr. Shapiro said. Patients are encouraged to try the device in their own homes for at least a week, and bring it back if they aren’t 100% satisfied. “We want them to have devices
