Happy New Year!

A

s the holiday season comes to a close and

we return to our daily work routines, the Happy New Year toasts slowly fade away. We are trying to recover from all the festivities of the season, the get-togethers with friends and families and the holiday feasts. Now, we wonder what the new year has in store for us. While we are making resolutions to better ourselves, we should remember that the most important improvement to our daily lives is to spend more quality time with our family and friends. To enjoy each other’s company and companionship, to truly listen to each other’s concerns, and to offer understanding and a helping hand are resolutions all of us can achieve. Therefore, let me make one last toast to 2013: “Appreciate your family and friends!” Have a Happy New Year from all of us at Our City Weston and the Town Times magazines. Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Gandhi Statue Unveiled at Falcon’s Lea Park By Debby Teich

O

n October 2, people around the world celebrated what

would have been Mahatma Gandhi’s 143rd birthday. In Davie, Gandhi supporters had even more cause for a celebration, when a 7-foot high, 780-pound bronze statue of him was unveiled at Falcon’s Lea Park, located at 14900 Stirling Road. It is the seventh statue of its kind in the United States. The project was made possible through the partnership of Kerala Samajam of South Florida and the Town of Davie.

Gandhi is considered the father of the Indian independence movement. He inspired civil rights and non-violence movements throughout the world. “Gandhi is a peace icon,” said Joy Kuttiyani, president of Kerala Samajam of South Florida, an Indian cultural group that has been in the area for the past 29 years. “His message serves as a common platform for all Indians.” According to Kuttiyani, there are more than 45,000 Indians living in South Florida. The Davie Town Council granted Kerala Samajam a half acre of land and the group agreed to pay for the statue, as well as the cost to transport and maintain it. Matt Glenn of Big Statues in Provo, Utah designed the statue, which is at the center of the Gandhi Memorial. Leading up to the statue are stepping stones, which are symbolic of the steps Gandhi took toward achieving freedom for his people. There was a large crowd for the dedication, including elected officials and other distinguished guests from the Indian community. They enjoyed traditional Indian dances and music. Several dignitaries spoke, including former Indian president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Davie Mayor Judy Paul declared it “World Peace and Mahatma Gandhi Day.” A large crowd gathered in Falcon’s Lea Park for the dedication of the bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Southwest Ranches to Celebrate Arbor Day By Debby Teich

T

he residents of Southwest Ranches have an opportunity to

enjoy the Town’s beautiful parks and rural landscape on a daily basis. In fact, Southwest Ranches has almost as many trees as residents. On January 18, from noon to 1pm, the Town will celebrate Arbor Day, a holiday which encourages tree planting and care. Although National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, Florida observes the holiday on the third Friday in January. The event will include ceremonial plantings, sapling giveaways, and light refreshments. The Town’s Schools & Education Advisory Board will also implement an art/ essay contest in the schools and the winning entries will be displayed in the Town Hall. Local school children are invited to create drawings, poetry or other artworks celebrating the theme: “Trees Make a World of Difference!” “In addition to creating awareness about the benefits trees provide to our community, the celebration of Arbor Day is a statement of a community’s investment in sustainability and the future,” said Town Arborist December Lauretano-Haines. “The holiday is celebrated annually all over our nation and the world. Southwest Ranches’ Arbor Day officially recognizes our

community’s commitment to be mindful of the invaluable contribution trees make to our lives, every moment of every day.” The Town of Southwest Ranches has celebrated Arbor Day since 2007, when it earned the distinction of becoming a Tree City USA. It joined more than 3,400 communities that currently participate in the program, which is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. The Arbor Day celebration is one of four requirements necessary to maintain its designation. The Town must have: a tree board or department; a tree care ordinance; a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita; and an Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation. In 2010 and 2011, Southwest Ranches also earned the Tree City USA Growth Award, which recognizes environmental improvement and encourages higher levels of tree care throughout America. Town officials are hoping to win the award again for their efforts in 2012. For information, visit www.southwestranches.org.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 01/31/13) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOu THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. American Basketball League Kicks Off the Season in Davie By Debby Teich

O

n January 24, American Basketball League’s Davie Stars will

play its first home game of the season against the Fort Lauderdale Sharks, at 7pm, at the Davie Police Athletic League Gymnasium. The recently refurbished gym has a new wood floor, fresh coat of paint, and enough seating for more than 550 fans. Long time NBA Assistant Basketball Coach Scott Adubato is Head Basketball Coach of the team. Adubato is a 7-year veteran Assistant Coach of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies. During the 2007-2010 seasons, he coached collegiately, leading the Big East Conference’s Seton Hall Pirates to their most successful campaign in recent memory. The Davie Shark’s roster will include former University of Connecticut 7-foot Center, Charles Okwandu, who led the UConn Huskies to the 2011 NCAA National Championship. Okwandu was selected in the 1st Round of the inaugural ABL draft. “The addition of Scott Adubato to the ABL coaching legion, which already includes Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy and Tree Rollins, is a rather clear indication of the caliber of this league,” said ABL founder Steve Haney. “Bringing NBA quality professionals such as Scott Adubato and Charles Okwandu to Davie is going to be a remarkable entertainment product for the Davie community.” The ABL’s inaugural season will consist of 24 games. The 12

team league will play in San Antonio, San Marcos, Sugarland, College Station, Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Palm Beach, Fort Walton Beach, Sebring and Corpus Christi. This is the first time in American sports history that a professional league has been developed for the purpose of operating as an international farm club, or feeder league, for global basketball. In addition to playing basketball at the Davie PAL gymnasium, the players will also be working with the program’s mentoring group. The players will meet with the kids and join them for several of their community service projects. “The players are hard workers and great role models for the kids,” said PAL Director Tim Albury. “Many of the kids are familiar with the players and have seen them on television.” The ABL will also help raise awareness of the Davie PAL program and help with fundraising efforts through concession sales.

I Care I Cure to Host 6th Annual 5K Walk/Run & Family Fun Day By Debby Teich

T

hroughout the year, the I Care I Cure Childhood Cancer

Foundation helps raise awareness and funds for innovative research to find gentler, less toxic and more targeted therapies for children with cancer. On February 10, runners and walkers of all ages will gather at the BB&T Center (formerly BankAtlantic Center) for the 6th Annual I Care I Cure...I Run 5K and Family Fun Day to raise funds for the Davie-based foundation. The 5K Run begins at 7:30am. The Family Fun Day begins immediately after the race and will include food, kid activities, games, raffles, awards, and much more. The 5K and Family Fun Day is the Foundation’s largest fundraiser. Last year’s event attracted more than 2,200 participants and raised more than $185,000 to fund research for gentler treatments for children with cancer. Brad and Beth Besner of Davie founded I Care I Cure to help spare other children the awful pain and suffering that their 11-yearold son Ian was forced to tolerate. Ian was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in January 2006. He endured four months of a difficult chemotherapy regimen, designed to kill all fast-replicating cells – the good and the bad -- instead of just the cancer-causing cells. He was cancer-free when he became infected with meningitis,

but his immune system was too weak to fight it. Ian passed away on May 31, 2006. The national non-profit organization raises awareness and funds for cutting-edge, targeted therapies for childhood cancer, so the treatment of childhood cancer will be gentler and more tolerable. Each year, millions of dollars are dedicated to cancer research by the U. S. Government and renowned cancer organizations. On average, however, only 2.5% of these valuable resources are allocated to advance pediatric cancer treatments. The current treatment regime for children with cancer has not changed very much and is physically and emotionally debilitating. It often leaves children vulnerable to severe complications and death from the very treatments that are supposed to save them. The Foundation uses the funds raised at events to award research grants to innovative researchers at leading medical institutions where doctors are working on developing innovative methods to help treat childhood cancer. To register for the race, visit www.icareicure.org. The cost for pre-registration is $25 for adults and $20 for children. Race Day Registration is $35 for adults and $30 for children. Students from University School of Nova Southeastern University participate in last year’s event.

New Year’s Resolution… Nutritional Optimization

A

By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

nother year is upon us, and New Year’s resolu-

tions are in high drive. Some of you are opting for tighter and leaner bodies or simply correcting areas where age and gravity have wrecked havoc. These plans for correction may consist of exercise, as well as surgery. What’s most important to either plan is nutritional optimization. Nutritional optimization will allow the body to heal faster, improve energy levels, decrease risk of infection, and improve general health. Many scientific studies have demonstrated that most people lack adequate levels of minerals and vitamins that are necessary to properly heal after taking into account their daily stressors. Nutritional status is imperative for optimal health and recovery. Without it, healing time becomes longer and more uncomfortable. How can I optimize my nutritional status? Diet and nutritional supplements in oral form is a good start; however, it can be overwhelming to determine what you should take and what amount is needed daily. This is why it is important to be under the care of an expert, a physician who specializes in Functional Medicine to help guide you in developing an individualized nutritional plan. Oral supplementation vs. Intravenous (IV) Nutrition Even with the best functioning gastrointestinal system, it is estimated that only 20-30% of vitamins taken orally are actually being absorbed. Once a nutritional deficiency is recognized, it may take several weeks to months to optimize levels orally. This is very different from IV nutrition, since 100% absorption occurs once the IV is initiated. In addition, there are many substances and dosages that can be placed in the IV that the body cannot handle orally due to gastrointestinal discomfort (upset stomach/ diarrhea). With IV nutrition, not only do you absorb 100%, but it can be at higher dosages, thus improving your nutritional status quicker. Will I heal quicker from surgery with IV Nutrition? Research has documented that wounds heal approximately 75% sooner with those receiving Intravenous Nutrition pre/post operatively. In addition, pain is also reduced as the IV nutrition assists in decreasing inflammation. Infection is less likely, as the body’s immune status is functioning at a higher level with optimized nutrition. Can I receive an IV if I’m not having surgery? Yes, absolutely! Aside from significantly reducing healing time and decreasing the risk of scarring, IV nutrition may be used to simply increase energy levels and stamina to conditions affecting under/over functioning adrenals. Some indications for IV nutrition: ▸▸ Fatigue ▸▸ Chronic Illnesses ▸▸ Before and After Surgery ▸▸ Adrenal Fatigue ▸▸ Improving sports performance and recovery ▸▸ Impaired Intestinal absorption i.e., post bariatric surgery, celiac disease, IBS ▸▸ Post radiation or chemotherapy ▸▸ Improve general health Call us to schedule a free consultation 954-384-8989. Dolphins’ Meal Distribution Impacts Over 10,000 People By Debby Teich

S

ince 1992, the Miami Dolphins have been delivering Thanksgiving

meals to families in need. This year, they distributed more than 900 meals and over 10,000 people benefited from the effort. The Miami Dolphins teamed up with Feeding South Florida to host multiple food giveaways, including one at Doctors Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. Some of the other sites included Sun Life Stadium, Miami-Dade County Hall and Oak Grove Park at Little Haiti. “When I bought the team, the important thing was really connecting with the community, participating in the community, enhancing the community, and bringing it together,” said Miami Dolphins Owner Steve Ross. “I think you can see today what an event like this does. It’s something that you feel Photos: Miami Dolphins good about.” Dolphins players, coaches and members of the Miami Dolphins Women’s Organization (MDWO) donated enough money to provide 750 meals. The team, along with cheerleaders, Dolphins alumni, MDWO members and community leaders helped to distribute the meals. “This is a blessing that we can’t really put into words very well,” said Brian Phelan, Director of Food Procurement for Feeding South Florida. “People have empty refrigerators down here. These folks look forward to this like Christmas. This is a blessing. They get to meet their favorite team and they get to be fed at the same time. It doesn’t get any better than this.”

Davie Couple Organizes Collection for Troops

F

or seven years, Al and Shelly

Stein of Davie have worked to improve the quality of life of military personnel by providing care packages and raising more than $60,000 for military-focused projects and charitable programs. Last month, they shipped more than 700 pounds of items to American troops in Afghanistan in time for the holidays. Students at Hollywood Academy of Arts and Sciences collected 425 pounds of snacks and toiletry items. They also wrote notes and greeting cards. The Women’s Club from St. Mark Catholic Church in Southwest Ranches, as well as three local chapters of the Daughters Al and Shelly Stein of the American Revolution, also sent contributions. The Steins packed all of the items into boxes for shipping. “We just want the troops to know that the people back home are thinking of them and appreciate what they are doing,” said Shelly. “They are so happy that someone cares.” The Steins are very familiar with the military. Alan served in the Marine Corps in the 1950’s and their son, a captain, has served in the Navy for more than 26 years. Both Al and Shelly serve on the board of the Broward County Council Navy League. In addition, Shelly is the liaison between the Council and Silver Ridge Elementary School, and Al is the liaison for two adopted ships - USS Bataan (LHD-5) and USS Leyte Gulf (CG-55).

In the past few years, they have collected and distributed more than a thousand cartons of books to ships in Port Everglades, other U.S. and NATO Navy ships and submarines, the U.S. Coast Guard, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Bethesda Navy Medical Center and three Marine Expeditionary Units. They have sent more than 1,050 care packages to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan that contain Students at Academy of Arts and Sciences collected items for the troops. They have also provided prepaid phone cards, entertainment equipment for the ships, and much more. They are able to provide this service with donations from friends, family, neighbors, charitable organizations, Rotary clubs, knitting groups and others. They use monetary donations to help defray the cost of shipping. “Many people want to help, but they are not sure how to do it,” said Al. “We help coordinate the effort.” The Steins frequently get letters and emails from the troops thanking them. “We volunteer because we want to give back,” said Al. “We never expect to receive anything in return.” To make a donation, send an email to alan33325alan@yahoo.com.

Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair Is a Success

O

By Debby Teich

ver 500 Davie residents gathered last month to enjoy fun,

food and festivities at the 13th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair. The theme of the parade was “Winter Wonderful.” Friends and neighbors created floats by decorating cars, boats, bicycles, scooters and even dogs. They threw candy and beaded necklaces to the crowds that line the streets. Some of this year’s VIPs included: Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Town Councilwoman Susan Starkey, local school principals, Davie Police & Fire Chiefs, Co-Grand Marshalls former Miami Dolphins Shawn Wooden and Orande Gadsden, the Forest Ridge Woman’s Club, Boy and Girl Scout troops, marching bands, local beauty queens, the Grinch, Santa and more. The parade also sponsored a food drive with the Hope Outreach Center. After the parade, the crowd moved to the Forest Ridge Greens for the fair. There were refreshments, hot dogs, baked goods, professional photos with Santa, inflatable

fun, face painting, balloon twisting, games, arts and crafts, raffles, a men’s frozen t-shirt contest, a finger printing lab for kids, and more. There were also live stage performances by rock bands, barbershop quartets, local singers and dancers, and many others. Forest Ridge is a community of 1,600 homes, with more than 5,000 residents. “Few cities, counties or communities our size have a parade of this scale,” said Co-Chair Ken Steinmetz. “On the first Saturday of each December, we block out the rest of the world, leave our cars in the driveway, and gather around the center of our little corner of the world.” For information, visit www.hollydayparade.com.

njuries to the growth plate in children may cause

damage to the structures at the end of the bone, which allow a child or teenager’s bone to grow to full adult size. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present. Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of twelve and eighteen, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor traumas. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth stops) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. Fractures into the joint can lead to arthritis as an adult. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing or curvature of the bone. Signs and symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. The injured body part may often look deformed. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating. X-rays are always taken to visualize the bone injury. In some cases the x-rays may be negative for a fracture. However, the tenderness that is felt by the patient on the growth plate is always indicative of a simple fracture to the growth plate despite these negative x-ray findings. In more moderate to severe cases the bone injury may be easily visualized on an x-ray. CT scans may be needed to further evaluate the bone injury. Treatment Options (early diagnosis is crucial): ▸▸ Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster the healing process. ▸▸ If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Nonweightbearing would be mandatory for part of that time. ▸▸ If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. Surgery can be minimally invasive in order to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked. Injuries into the joint which can cause arthritis can be minimized or completely avoided. The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment. University School Students Study Poverty in America By Debby Teich

S

tudents in the University School of Nova Southeastern

University’s Upper School are learning to think globally. During the Summit on Human Dignity: Poverty in America, they spent a week studying the social issue from every angle. The purpose of the Summit was to help the students become aware of the pervasiveness of poverty and the problems it creates for our communities. Students analyzed the circumstances that lead individuals and their families to struggle with poverty and discussed the tools and solutions that can empower people to take action. The Summit kicked off with a school wide assembly. Big Mama, founder of Team of Life, and Robin Martin, Executive Director HOPE South Florida, shared their personal experiences with poverty. “We wanted the students to hear personal accounts of poverty from people in their own community, instead of listening to experts,” said Tara Ellsley, teacher who sponsored the event with Lori Horvitz. “It made it much more real for them.” Throughout the week, there were optional guest speakers, which included representatives from local nonprofits, a public defender, and two alumni that are working with organizations that address social issues. In the classroom, students researched how poverty related to different subject areas and then recommended lesson plans and activities. In science class, for example, students discussed how lead poisoning is a growing problem in urban areas. In Chinese, they talked about the government’s role in reducing poverty in China. Students also related poverty to the visual and performing arts. They created public service announcements, documentaries, art projects, dances, and much more. They also performed RENT. The Digital Activism Club used digital media to keep students

32

informed of all of the activities and to inspire discussions. As part of the solution, the students implemented a food and clothing drive to help Becca’s Closet, the Broward Outreach Center and other nonprofits in the area. “It is important for the students to understand ways that they can help,” said Ellsley. “The entire effort was student-led. They did an incredible job.” Ellesley says that the school plans to have another Summit next year. Last year’s topic dealt with the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual community. Next year’s topic has not been determined yet.

Students work on povertyrelated projects.

here are several categories of alimony which

are addressed by Florida Statutes. The primary factor which determines the type of alimony to be awarded is the length of marriage. Of course, this is only after a determination is made whether alimony is even appropriate, based upon a number of other factors, including the income of the parties and the need by one spouse. When one thinks of alimony most people think of “permanent alimony,” which is a payment received by a spouse each month. Permanent alimony usually only occurs if a marriage is considered long term, which is defined in Florida Statutes as a marriage of 17 years or more. There are, however, circumstances when permanent alimony can be awarded in a marriage with a shorter duration, but that is the exception to the rule. Permanent alimony will terminate upon the remarriage of the receiving spouse, or the death of either party. It is not uncommon for there to be a life insurance component to insure that the receiving spouse will be protected should the paying spouse die before his/her alimony obligation is terminated. There is another event which could either reduce or terminate permanent alimony. This is referred to in Florida law as a supportive relationship between the spouse receiving the alimony and a person with whom he/she resides. This is sometimes referred to as cohabitation between two parties. The law however is much more specific than just two parties cohabitating or living together. What the court may look to is the following: ▸▸ The extent to which the parties may hold themselves out as a married couple (without being legally married). This includes using a common mailing address, or using the same last name. ▸▸ How long have the parties resided together? ▸▸ Are the parties financially dependent upon one another? Have they pooled their assets? ▸▸ Have the parties jointly purchased any real or personal property, such as a home or a car? ▸▸ Is one of the parties financially supporting the other? These are a few of the criteria the court may use to determine if a supportive relationship exists. The burden of proof is on the paying spouse to prove the existence of this relationship. It is, in fact, a somewhat difficult issue to prove. The law was passed to prevent a spouse from continuing to receive alimony just because he/she did not get legally married. This law recognizes that a relationship, even without the issuance of a marriage license, can be the basis of a termination of an alimony obligation. If you know anyone who has questions about the above issue, have them call my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160

Davie YES Board Holds Cyber Safety 101 Seminar at Indian Ridge By Debby Teich

T

he Town of Davie Youth and Education Safety Advisory Board

internet access and social media, as well as how to protect their names, information and family while on-line. She also talked about cyber bulling and explained how the face-to-face school bully has been replaced by a click of the “send button.” “It allows no safe haven for those who are bullied,” said Fletcher. “There is no closing the door. The bullies are in your home with your child.” Davie Police Chief Patrick Lynn outlined economic crimes related to the internet. Detective Viviana Galinal shared ways to prevent tax fraud and identity theft. Broward County Public Schools Police Chief David Golt informed parents about the many resources available to them within Broward County Public Schools, such as the Anonymous Reporting/Silence Hurts Tip-line. “Keeping silent doesn’t help us, them, or anyone else” said Golt. “In fact, it could allow a bad situation to get even worse.” Two high school students Brennan Turner and Eduardo Barreto, provided a teenage point of view on the painful effects of bullying. The session ended with a question/ answer panel discussion, so parents could inquire about ways to keep their children safe. The YES Advisory board is hoping to bring the presentation to other schools and organizations.

(YES) and the Indian Ridge Middle School PTO recently hosted “Cyber Safety 101 for Parents” at the school. A distinguished panel of cyber safety and cybercrime professionals came together to discuss several ways for concerned parents to monitor their children’s internet and cell phone use in order to keep Davie tweens and teens safe. The YES Board’s mission is to create an atmosphere of safety for children in the community, to serve as a child safety education and advocacy group, and to coordinate the development and promotion of a Child Safety Day for children. Although it has sponsored programs on drowning prevention, bike safety and driving safety, this is the first time it has addressed cyber safety. “While computers, tablets, smart phones and gaming consoles can be a source of good, clean fun, local experts say the Internet may be more dangerous than parents would imagine,” said Tim Curtin, Advisory board member. “Kids do not always understand the consequences of their actions.” John Pisula, Chairman of the YES Advisory Board, and Frank Zagari, Principal at Indian Ridge welcomed the crowd of parents and students. Davie Mayor Judy Paul and Town Council member Caryl Hatten attended to show their support. Tresha Fletcher, Prevention Specialist with Broward Davie Mayor Judy Paul addresses the County Public Schools, spoke to parents and students about crowd at Indian Ridge Middle School

The YES Board meets on the third Monday of odd months, at 6pm. For more information, visit www.davie-fl.gov or send an email to jpisula@att.net.

Quiet Title Actions – A Timely Solution That May Eliminate Your Mortgage By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

I

n late 2007 and early 2008, we suffered one of the largest eco-

nomic collapses in U.S. history. The real estate market was the first to tumble, with property values depreciating hundreds of thousands of dollars in just a few short months. Overwhelmed with this financial collapse and a dwindling job market, many homeowners were either unable or unwilling to continue making their mortgage payments. Foreclosure proceedings began on most of those homes, but on some, the lenders have not initiated any foreclosure or collection proceedings, or started the foreclosure and then dismissed it before a final resolution. These are the types of cases that would qualify for a “quiet title action.”

A quiet title action is a legal action filed by a homeowner against the mortgage holder in order to legally eliminate the mortgage recorded against the home as of public record, or in legal terms, remove “cloud on the title.” The reason why a quiet title action is such a timely solution now is because under Florida’s statute of limitations, a lender only has five years from the date of default under the note and mortgage to initiate a lawsuit to collect the debt or foreclose on the home. Since many homeowners defaulted (i.e., stopped making payments) in late 2007 and early 2008 due to the economic collapse, 2013 marks the end of the five years that a mortgage holder has to initiate a foreclosure or collection action against a defaulting homeowner. If your lender has not initiated any foreclosure or collection action against you, or previously initiated an action and then dismissed it before a resolution, and five years have passed since your last payment (or the five year window is soon approaching), you are an excellent candidate to file a quiet title action in order to completely eliminate the mortgage on your home. Now that the mortgage is gone, what happens to the debt? In order to eliminate the debt, two options exist for homeowners once the mortgage lien is removed. First, a homeowner can wait until the lender files its untimely legal action to collect the debt, and effectively defend it on the five year statute of limitations theory described above. Second, a homeowner can file for bankruptcy protection after a successful quiet title action to wipe out any personal responsibility for the debt under the home loan. Detailed explanations of all options available to homeowners at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during your appointment with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, don’t face this problem on your own. Contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation or visit www.arcialawfirm. com for more information about our law firm and services .

Why Do Young Families Need A Revocable Trust?

Every Child is a

Champion! New Online Registration

By Alan J. Reinfeld, Esq.

I

We’ve produced more High Level & Collegiate Gymnasts than any gym in the area

n today’s society, it is important to plan for the

future of your family. Every day, tragedy happens, from car accidents to people being diagnosed with cancer. It is important that there are plans to take care of your family in case the unexpected happens. Take me for example: my mother passed away from cancer in about four weeks, but because we had a trust I was able to focus more on her and healing then on the financial matters. A revocable trust is a legal document that creates a plan of distribution of a person’s assets. A person sets up a revocable trust, i.e., a “living trust,” during his or her lifetime, which becomes irrevocable upon their death. This means that the person has the power to amend or revoke the trust only during his or her lifetime. During the person’s life, the beneficiaries may include the person him/herself, his or her spouse, children or other close relatives. Once the person passes away, the property that is titled to the trust is distributed pursuant to the terms of the trust. What are the benefits of having a revocable trust? ▸▸ Quick transfer of assets. A properly drafted revocable trust can help the decedent’s family avoid the time-consuming probate process. The person must re-title his or her assets into the trust; this is called “funding” the trust. If assets are not transferred to the trust prior to the person’s death, the only way to transfer any assets to the trust will be through probate. ▸▸ Avoid Probate. At a minimum, probate administration will take over six months. The administration usually costs a minimum of $500 and many times can cost more based on the complexity. There may be other fees and costs associated with administration.

spring break Camp Dates: March 25-29, 2013

▸▸ Privacy. A revocable trust is a private document that does not require filing with the court. A will, however, is a public document that must be deposited with the court after the decedent’s death. ▸▸ Trust assets are not subject to creditors. Assets properly put into a revocable trust are not subject to most creditors. When a probate administration is opened, creditors may try to claim the money owed to them by filing a claim on the probate assets. ▸▸ Focus on mourning. Avoiding probate and quickly wrapping up the affairs of the deceased helps focus on mourning rather than probate administration. ▸▸ Name a person who will handle your affairs. A revocable trust along with a proper will allows a person to designate who will handle their affairs once they pass away. ▸▸ Reduction of estate taxes. While a trust is not a tax savings tool, there may be some provisions included in the trust that allows you to transfer your wealth by establishing a credit shelter trust in the event of death. Months of Inventory from 2008-2012 for Davie and Cooper City have decreased dramatically. In 2008, Davie touted 18.8 months and Cooper City 12.8 months. In 2012, Davie has only 3.3 months of supply and Cooper City 2 months. Year over year, average list prices have remained steady: In 2008, the average list price for Davie was $707,000 and in 2012 was $712,000. In Cooper City, the average list price in 2008 was $427,000 and in 2012 was $418,000. Residences have sold in the ninety percentile of their last listed price and within eighty percentile of their original listed price throughout the five-year picture. The more I researched, the greater I was encouraged. History has indicated that as inventory decreases, prices will increase. With our continued low interest rates and prices on the rise, now is the best time to consider buying your next home. I would love to help you, or someone you know, with that decision. M

y name is David Scott Bieber, DVM, P.A. I am a Veterinarian at Sheridan West Animal Clinic in Cooper City, Florida. I have an interesting story with a happy ending. My family and I had a Chocolate Labrador named Bruno, born 06/28/1997. Back in the end of 2008, Bruno was about 11 years old and started to have a hard time using his hind legs. He started having trouble getting up and trouble walking. We started anti-inflammatory therapy, pain management and adequan injections. By the end of December, Bruno was paralyzed in both hind legs. We took digital radiographs, and sent them to a Radiologist, which was concluded that he had chronic intervertebral disk disease in both cervical (neck) and lumbar (back) spines. This probably caused disk herniation with spinal cord compression at one or more sites. The prognosis was poor. To make a long story short, my family & I decided to put Bruno in a wheelchair on walks. Bruno was still very happy wagging his tail and eating. But nonetheless it was heart breaking watching him pull himself everywhere in the house. Bruno at this point was still on anti-inflammatories, glucosamine and adequan injections. Then, I began to think how will Bruno walk again if he has muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, and lack of bone density in his back legs and spine. I came up with the idea to give Bruno Testosterone injections once monthly, the idea being that testosterone maintains muscle mass and increases bone density. And, if you think about it, most dogs are neutered and have zero levels of testosterone to begin with. We were not giving body building doses, just enough to maintain muscle mass, so if his spinal cord damage ever healed he would be able to walk again. Five months went by in that wheelchair, and then Bruno started to walk again. Bruno died at 14 years old of chronic kidney disease which is their natural way of going. He walked until the end. I have been doing research since 2008 in the use of testosterone injections in the geriatric canine with incredible results. We are using it mainly on large breed dogs that are neutered, that are having a hard time getting up. These illnesses include arthritis, vertebral disk degeneration, hip dysplasia, muscle atrophy and degenerative joint disease. I have been using this treatment for the last 4 years, and it’s been and continue to be very successful with great results. 25% of all canines could profit from this treatment! These injections are not expensive to give, either.

Lingua Language Center Empowers Students With Effective Communication

I

By Stacey Bomser

n today’s global market, it’s an advantage to

be versed in multiple languages. Lingua Language Center is an internationally recognized language and culture training center specializing in teaching world languages to adults and children. It also offers translation and interpretation services for businesses. Andreina Ojeda, President of Lingua Language Center, explained the unique teaching methods her company uses as well as its many programs.

Andreina Ojeda, President of Lingua Language Center.

What distinguishes Lingua Language Center from other language programs? Our Mission is

to empower our students with effective communication in English, Spanish, and many languages of the world; to offer quality language education through a proven natural, multisensory methodology, delivered by professional educators who utilize state-ofthe-art materials and technology, thus ensuring our students’ success in the acquisition and mastery of a new language; and to provide such education in an immersive, yet relaxed, environment.

What languages do you teach? We teach most languages of the world, from English to Farsi and Arabic, including but not limited to Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, Portuguese, Creole, and more. It is worth noting that English, Spanish, French and Mandarin have become the most demanded languages in our area during the last years. What training, experience and expertise does your staff have? All of our instructors possess a bachelor’s degree in education as a minimum requirement. However, many have a master’s or a doctorate degree and they all share a passion for teaching. Almost all have more than ten years of teaching experience. All faculty members are fully bi-lingual or multi-lingual and work as a team. This has been what really differentiates us from other schools. What special techniques have you developed to teach language? Lingua’s direct, natural approach to language training is called “Enter-Training,” a unique combination of entertainment and training. Following the principles of neuro-linguistics (a multisensory practice through visual, auditory and physical activities), we promote rapid language acquisition of

48

communication skills for learners at all levels. Oral communication is primarily emphasized during class time. We also utilize online resources to help reinforce our students’ learning experience as everything that we do is hands-on and interactive learning. Do you offer programs for non-English speakers needing to learn English? Our main program for adults is the Intensive English Program. It is aimed at adult and young adult learners of English as a Second Language. This program provides students with extensive coverage of the structures and vocabulary of American English, but reflects the fact that English is a language for international communication and is not limited to any one country or region. It also features communicative activities to enable students to learn and use lively and natural language for everyday situations and for meaningful communication. The method combines natural language, everyday situations and practice of four language skills (listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing) with an emphasis on the development of oral interaction. Class practice is provided through conversation, oral drills, games, music, and other engaging activities. The curriculum is supported by a combination of video, interactive audio programs, internet links, lab, full color textbooks, workbooks, and real life objects. The course is divided into seven terms of nine weeks each. Your program is internationally-known. Do you accept non-resident students? The Lingua Language Center has met all the requirements of the Department of Homeland Security to enroll nonimmigrant international students under the F1 Visa Program. As a certified school, Lingua is now able to expand its student body to include students from all over the world. Do you offer any programs to help with language barriers in the workplace? We are excited to partner with Broward College for a series of Spanish in the Workplace seminars. The first is Survival Spanish for the Workplace. This introductory Spanish course provides participants with tips to break the ice when meeting prospective Spanish-speaking clients. Participants will learn pronunciation skills and workplace vocabulary, and work on listening comprehension. The Conversational Spanish for Customer Satisfaction class is aimed at providing participants with speaking and listening comprehension skills in the field of customer relations. Through presentations and role playing, participants will engage in conversation practice geared to enhancing customer satisfaction. Both programs meet two evenings a week for three weeks, beginning later this month. We’re now half-way through the school year.

What services can you offer a student who may need extra help in their world language class?

In addition to our successful after-school immersion enrichment programs, we also offer private tutoring in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Chinese, and other languages. Our program allows children to develop the structure of a foreign language, as

Lingua students complete laboratory work to develop reading and writing skills; oral skills are practiced in class.

well as communication skills. They learn to speak the language and to understand the meaning of words in context. In addition to after-school classes, what other language programs do you offer children? Our language immersion summer camp offers a unique experience for children ages three to fifteen. Camp Lingua is a different entity from Lingua Language Center, but it utilizes the same award-winning Lingua methodology for teaching language called “EnterTraining”, a unique blend of entertainment and training. At Camp Lingua, which is held on a school campus in Davie, children will not only learn a new language, but will learn about the culture of the countries where the language of study is spoken and will interact with children from all over the world. Our local children come to learn foreign languages such as Spanish, French and Mandarin Chinese and our international students come to learn English. They all end up enriching their culture and adding friendships that last a lifetime. We also offer school break camps as a way to enrich the education of children while their parents work.

Your business is not limited to language classes. What services do you offer to businesses? We offer conference and court interpretation, as well as translation of legal, medical, and technical documents from any language into English and vice versa, including all related services such as localization, graphic design, evaluation of transcripts, and so on. We also provide consulting to companies, guiding them to reach diverse target audiences.

Lingua Language School is located in the Weston Town Center at 1792 Bell Tower Lane. For more information on its language classes or business services call (954) 577-9955 or visit www.linguaschool.com.

unique counter service, fast casual concept that allows our customers the opportunity to order what they want and then watch it cook right in front of their eyes. Char-Hut grills each order fresh when it is ordered. With 20 different toppings to pick from, diners tell us what they want on it and it gets dressed up just the way they like it.
