Runners and walkers of all ages will gather in his memory on Feb. 12, at the BankAtlantic Center for the 5th Annual I Care I Cure…I Run 5K and Family Fun Day to raise funds for the I Care I Cure Childhood Cancer Foundation. The 5K Run begins at 7:30 a.m. sharp on a certified 3.1 mile course. There will be a fun-filled family festival at the conclusion of the race, until 11 a.m., with activities for kids, food and much more. The I Care I Cure…I Run is the foundation’s largest fundraiser. More than 2,000 participants attended last year’s event and helped to fund $245,000 in research grants to find gentler cures for childhood cancer. Brad and Beth Besner of Davie founded I Care I Cure to help spare other Ian Besner children the

frijoles con Kugel – a “fun-raising” event By DeBBy Teich

tunity has existed in Dade County for many years, but the Hispanic population in Broward is much more diverse.” said Synalovski. “It includes immigrants from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Peru and many other countries. While many of them socialize in smaller groups, the event allows them to get together as a larger community and share stories.” Synalovski says that guests will be able to pen their hometown on a map of the Americas. “It will be interesting to see the makeup of the guests,” he continued. Frijoles con Kugel is part of the Federation's Latin Initiative, which was started approximately one year ago to bring Broward County's Latin Jewish population together and, ultimately, into the Federation as volunteers and donors. Some have been here for a short time and others have been here for as many as 30 years. The Initiative has held Latino Shabbats, parlor meetings, educational forums, mini missions and more. ‘We want to develop sense of belonging among the Latin Jewish community,” said Anita Lapco, former principal of a Jewish Day school in Venezuela and consultant to the Latin Initiative project. “Many of them were very active in their countries and held leadership positions. We are hoping that they will become active again.” The David Posnack Jewish Community Center is located at 5950 South Pine Island Rd., in Davie. For information on the event, call 954-249-6358 or send an email to analapco@bellsouth.net.

6,000 Jews who emigrated from Latin American countries. Although they share a common heritage, there have been few gatherings that provide a venue for them to meet. On February 25, the Jewish Federation of Broward’s Latin Initiative will reach out to the Latino Jewish community with “Frijoles con Kugel”, a fun-filled evening with dining and lively entertainment. The celebration is open to the public. More than 300 people are expected to attend the event at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center, in Davie. It begins at 8 p.m. with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres that include a mix of traditional Jewish (kugel) and Latin (frijoles) kosher foods. The festivities continue at 9 p.m., with dinner and dancing. Guests will indulge in chicken with rice and beans, ropa viaja, fried plantains and flan, as they sip Mojitos. They will also dance to Salsa music and the Hora. Since the cost of the event has been underwritten by local businesses, guests are asked to make a donation of at least $54 per person to the Jewish Federation. The idea for Frijoles con Kugel is not new. Manny Synalovski, chair, spearheaded the “fun-raising” event three times in the 1990’s and it was a success each time. Born in Cuba and raised in Puerto Rico, Manny says he understands the need to create opportunities for Hispanic Jews to get together. “The oppor-

iv nutritional therapy By DR. Jean-cLauDe neReTTe
A
re you are suffering froM the following or
simply want to improve your health?: Chronic illnesses • Depression/Anxiety • Asthma • Sinusitis • Acute and Chronic Viral Infection • Undergoing chemotherapy or radiation • Chronic Fatigue • Before and After Surgery • Adrenal Fatigue • Complement Hormonal Therapy • Detox Your Body • Improve Your Nutritional Status • Need to Recover and Heal Faster after Sports.
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Reverse The Signs of Aging
Hormones do not decline because WE age. WE age because hormones decline. SAY NO! Let us explain how Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy will CHANGE the “QUALITY” of your LIFE, for the REST of your LIFE.
iv vitamin therapy may help to rejuvenate your body and help you to feel better again. Intravenous (IV) therapy is a way to introduce nutrients and therapeutic agents directly into the bloodstream. It can be used to correct deficiencies, enhance immune function, increase energy and assist in maintaining health. IV nutrients are given in therapeutic pharmacological doses greater than the minimal requirements of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), which are intended just to avoid deficiency states. Natural nutrients are easy on the body and welcomed IV administration has an exceedingly high safety profile. Giving IV nutritional therapies will put nutrients back into the body, and improve the ability of cells to detoxify, repair and regenerate. Intravenous nutritional therapy is a method of delivering vitamins, minerals, and other vital nutrients to the body directly to the blood stream. This will allow 100 % absorption of the nutrients instead of 20% if taken by mouth.
what are the benefits of intravenous nutritional therapy? IV nutritional therapy can provide enormous health benefits depending on the condition(s) being treated, the specific protocol(s) used, and the number of treatments and the overall health of the patient being treated. In many respects, IV nutritional therapy is a preventive aging measure since it improves the nutritional content inside of the cells. Some of the specific benefits that patients may experience include: increased energy, an overall sense of well being, improved sports performance, improved healing and recovery from sports “wear and tear” or even surgical procedures, enhanced immune support and stress relief.
would i be a candidate if i have a good diet and exercise daily? Yes, even if you eat well, your body might not be absorbing the vitamins and minerals it needs to fight the aging process. IV therapy boosts the antioxidant vitamins and minerals levels in your body much more effectively than oral supplements. You can choose from a variety of IV cocktails, each designated to help your body repair damage, prevent aging, and recover its youthful vigor. We all want to live healthier live a healthier lives; a big part of improving one’s health has to do with optimizing nutrition.
how do i get started? The first step in considering IV nutrition therapy is to schedule a Comprehensive Initial Assessment with a qualified physician who specializes in IV Nutrition Therapy. During this visit, specialized laboratories with blood, saliva, or urine will be ordered in addition to a physical exam and detailed health history which will identify your specific concerns and issues. These will allow the doctor to develop a specific treatment plan individualized for you to help you improve your health. To schedule a free consultation, call 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Several dignitaries have already volunteered, including Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Cooper City Mayor Debby Eisinger and Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis. A student chef from the Culinary School at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale will be assigned to each team. Faculty members of the Culinary School, as well as Rabbi Bennett H. Greenspon and Rabbi Frank DeWoskin, both of Temple Beth Emet, will help determine who earns the title of Nosh Fest Champion. Culinary School faculty members will also have an opportunity to display their talents during several cooking demonstrations. Admission to the Nosh Fest is five non perishable items, which will be donated to Feeding South Florida, WECARE Food Pantry and the Food Bank, operated by the Jewish Family Service of Broward County. Any prepared food that is not consumed at the event on Feb. 12 will be donated to Feeding South Florida. Last year’s donation consisted of over a ton of food.
have an opportunity to participate in the largest Jewish Food Festival in the Southeast. Nosh Fest III includes Jewish foods, cooking competitions, cooking demonstrations, children’s activities, local entertainment and more. And it is all for a good cause. It will be held on Feb. 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Temple Beth Emet, 4807 S. Flamingo Rd., in Cooper City. Organizers are expecting more than 2,000 people to attend. "The Nosh Fest is a great opportunity for families to sample some Jewish style food, have fun, and help the needy," said Stuart Silver, co-event chair. The Nosh Fest was started two years ago by members of Temple Beth Emet to help provide food to those in need. They also wanted to find a fun way to share Jewish cuisine and culture with the community. They created the Nosh Fest and, in lieu of an admission fee, asked people to bring a donation to benefit the local food banks. The festival is a great place to “Nosh” or “taste” traditional Jewish style foods. Some of the menu items will include Lower East Side Corned Beef Sandwiches, Brooklyn Mini-Bagels with Lox and Cream Cheese, Israeli Falafel, Aunt Sadie’s Matzo Ball Soup, Sweet Noodle Kugel, Peppy’s Potato Pancakes, Tati’s Blintzes, For information on the Nosh Fest, visit www.noshfest. Today the 60-acre not-for-profit botanical garden and wildlife sanctuary contains over 3,000 tropical and sub-tropical species of plants and trees, including 21 of the largest trees of their species, and is home to the largest collection of Florida native wildlife in the state. It also hosts ecological tours for over 26,000 school children of different ages each year, educating them on Florida's unique wildlife, plants, and environment. On February 22, Flamingo Gardens will celebrate its anniversary with the opening of a new exhibit entitled "This Beauty Spot." Memorial hospital west: growing with the community for two decades
S
ince opening in 1992, MeMorial hospital
West has grown from a 100-bed hospital near the edge of the Everglades to Broward County’s third-largest and one of South Florida’s most comprehensive healthcare facilities. Over this same period of time, southwest Broward County was among the fastest-growing areas in the nation. “Growing up together provided valuable insight,” says C. Kennon Hetlage, Administrator and Chief Executive Officer at Memorial Hospital West. “Today, the hospital continues to develop services around the specific needs of the community.” The recent expansion, completed in December, increases Memorial Hospital West’s licensed beds to 384 – all private rooms. The 80 additional inpatient beds help expedite hospital admissions and reduce waiting times for patients in the Emergency Department – the third-busiest in the county, with more than 88,000 patients last year. In the new wing, an entire floor with 40 beds is dedicated to advanced oncology treatments for patients of the Memorial Cancer Institute. Broward County’s first inpatient bone marrow transplant unit makes it possible for patients to receive this intensive, specialized treatment locally. In the past, patients often had to relocate to another region of
the country for lengthy transplant procedures. Another floor in the new wing houses medical/surgical and telemetry units with a total of 40 beds. Even the hospital’s new entrance and lobby were thoughtfully designed with large windows, soft colors and a player piano to create a welcoming, healing environment. “Residents have trusted us with their care for almost two decades,” says Hetlage. “We’re so pleased to offer these enhancements. They clearly demonstrate our unwavering commitment to improving the health of our community.” As the hospital prepares for its 20th anniversary in April, its wide-ranging programs and services paint an impressive picture. Last year alone, Memorial Hospital West admitted more than 22,000 patients with a diverse array of medical needs.
Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute’s Rapid Response Heart Attack Teams and Memorial Neuroscience Center’s Brain Attack Teams are saving lives around-theclock, while Memorial’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Center is among the county’s busiest. Memorial Cancer Institute, with CyberKnife® and RapidArc™ technology, and Memorial Breast Cancer Center are the leading programs in Broward County. Florida’s first Image Recovery Center® uses innovative methods to help patients adjust to cancer treatment and recovery. With almost 5,000 deliveries last year, the Family Birthplace at Memorial Hospital West is the largest obstetrical program south of Orlando and is third-largest in the state. Parents are reassured by the level II neonatal intensive care unit. “As surely as healthcare continues to change, South Florida will continue to grow and evolve,” says Hetlage. “Memorial Hospital West is dedicated to providing the superior patientand family-centered care our community trusts – today and for generations to come.” Memorial Hospital West is located at 703 North Flamingo Rd., in Pembroke Pines. girl scout warms the hands and hearts of the homeless By DeBBy Teich
A
s a MeMber of g irl scouts of
Southeast Florida Troop #12345, sixteenyear-old Ashira Vantrees of Cooper City is dedicated to making the world a better place. She is hoping that her “Warm the Homeless Project” will help her earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. If so, she will join the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference, both locally and globally. Ashira has been in Girl Scouts for more than 10 years. “I have met some of my best friends through the Scouts,” said Ashira. She received Bronze and Silver Awards before working on her Gold Award. For her Bronze project, she worked with the troop to help children with special needs during speech and physical therapy. She is well aware of the difficulties they face, since her sister has special needs. She completed her Silver project while living in Costa Rica. After meeting a little girl with no shoes, she collected 800 pairs of shoes, which she donated to Helping Hands of Costa Rica. She also brought several pairs to the girl who inspired her. When Ashira learned that the homeless population is up 18% in Broward County and that over 3,800 men, women, and children are homeless in Broward, she knew she had found the perfect project for her Gold Award. She has been working with LifeNet4Families to create care packages for the homeless. “Our winters are getting
colder and the homeless people have been suffering more,” said Ashira. “Over the last few winters, several homeless people have died from frostbite. I am hoping that my project will help keep them warm.” She has been collecting every day necessities, such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, shaving cream and razors, as well as gently used blankets, socks, and gloves. All of the items are placed inside a pillow case to make it convenient for the recipient. Ashira canvassed her neighborhood for donations and has been working with the Key Clubs in her district. She also placed drop boxes at two locations: Cooper City Community Center, 9000 SW 50th Place, in Cooper City, and the Jewish Community Center, 5850 S. Pine Island Road in Davie. “If everyone donated one item, together we could warm the homeless one pillow case care package at a time,” said Ashira. “When they receive the package, they will know that someone is thinking about them.” Ashira’s goal is to collect enough items for at least 500 care projects. She is hoping to finish her project in time to be considered for the Gold Award in April. She plans to make this project an on-going commitment. For information or to make a donation, send an email to helping.the.homeless.11@ gmail.com.

silver ridge students Plant an edible garden By DeBBy Teich
S
tuDents at silver riDge eleMentary in Davie are experiencing
the joys of growing and eating their own vegetables and herbs. A new school garden has provided the students with a multi-sensory experience, which allows them to touch, smell, taste and of course view the constant changing beauty of the plants as they grow. “The garden provides the students with an opportunity to learn how plants grow, from seed to harvest,” said Saemone Hollingsworth, assistant principal. Parents Debra Annane, Jen Meyer and Vanessa Rico-Robie proposed the project at the beginning of the school year. Each had their own reason for wanting to start a garden. Jen is passionate about gardening and has one at home. Vanessa recalls gardening as a child and wanted to create similar memories for her own children. “I remember picking fresh fruits and vegetables, getting my hands dirty and playing with bugs,” said Venessa. Debra created a successful garden at her son’s prior school. “Some of the children at my son’s old school had never seen some of the vegetables we grew,” said Debra. “I hope that our new garden will help the students understand some of the benefits of healthy eating.”
Once the moms got approval, they began preparing for the garden. Each one planted seedlings at home with their kids. They sold some of the plants at the school’s Fall Festival to raise money and kept the rest for the garden. Each of the kindergarten classes also planted seeds in cups of dirt. Jen’s husband installed four planting boxes on Lady Bug Lane, outside the kindergarten pod. In November, the school held a planting party for teachers, students and parents. They planted broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, herbs and much more. Several classes volunteered to take turns watering and caring for the plants. They quickly learned that it takes a lot of work to grow plants. In the spring, the students are planning a pizza and salad party to sample the fruits of their labor. The three moms are hoping to keep the garden growing for many years. They applied for grants and plan to fundraise to expand their efforts. They also want to start a gardening club, as well as a composting worm farm to help fertilize the garden. “I hope that many of the kids learn to enjoy gardening and all of the wonders of growing something from the soil,” said Vanessa.

reasons why You need uninsured Motorist coverage By hoWaRD ciTRon
T
here are Many reasons why you neeD uninsureD
Motorist (UM) Coverage, whether your vehicle is a car, truck or motorcycle: ▸ More than 50% of drivers on Florida roads have little or minimal insurance. ▸ Many Florida drivers have no auto insurance at all. ▸ With UM coverage, your own insurance company may pay for bodily injuries you or your passengers suffer when the other driver is at fault and has: ▸ no insurance ▸ too little insurance to cover all your damages. ▸ You are the victim of a hit-and-run accident. ▸ Although UM coverage is not mandatory in Florida, it is a relatively inexpensive safeguard. ▸ In Florida, your Personal Injury Protection (PIP), or no-fault, benefits carry only a $10,000 limit. So there may be instances when your no-fault benefits will not cover a loss in full. Most people do not realize how many drivers on the road in South Florida either drive with the minimum amount of coverage required by the law or without any insurance at all. Under Florida law, the only coverage which an individual must carry is property damage coverage and personal injury protection. This insurance coverage does not pay for the victim’s medical expenses, lost wages, or injuries. What I have come to learn is that many individuals do not understand or realize the importance of their personal automobile insurance coverage, and do not carry uninsured motorist coverage, which protects individuals and their families from uninsured motorists on the roadway. As an attorney, my practice involves a great deal of automobile accident claims and litigation. I receive at least one call a week where an individual is the victim of an automobile accident, and the person who negligently caused the accident does not have insurance coverage to pay for any of the victim’s medical bills or injuries. Unfortunately I am forced to decline many of these cases, because there is no liability insurance available to pay for their damages. The most important coverage which an individual in South Florida can carry in their automobile insurance policy is uninsured motorist coverage. The way uninsured motorist coverage works is that if you are the victim of an automobile accident, and an uninsured or underinsured driver causes the collision, you are then able to make a claim against your own insurance policy to provide coverage for medical bills and/or future pain and suffering. This can be very important specifically for individuals who are forced to miss time from work, or sustain a serious injury which may alter their ability to continue to work and engage in their regular activities. As a practicing attorney in South Florida, it is my suggestion to all drivers to pay a little extra money for their automobile insurance coverage to purchase uninsured motorist coverage. The cost of the increased premium is the only way to protect you and your family from the negligence of uninsured or under-insured drivers. Citron & Bloom has offices in both Weston and Coral Springs and handles cases involving motor vehicle accidents, slip and falls, dog bites/animal attacks, defective products, medical negligence and nursing home abuse. teens learn good decision Making with “bad call” By DeBBy Teich
I
t is no secret that teens Do not always Make the best Decisions.
This month, the Maverick Players from Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High will present “Bad Call,” a play which explores the choices teens make and helps them understand the effects of their decisions. The one act community service theater production play was written and directed by award winning author and artistic director Cindy Keegan of Archbishop McCarthy High School. “Our goal is to encourage teenagers to think twice, before making a bad call,” said Keegan. “Although the play tackles heavy moral topics and cites important statistics, there is a lot of comedy and audience interaction to lighten the mood. We hope Bad Call will touch each guest in a helpful way.” The play helps teens make difficult decisions and good choices. It stresses the importance of thinking through a situation before making a questionable or hurtful action or statement. “It emphasizes compassion and the importance of being able to sympathize and empathize with their peers and ultimately
all people,” said Keegan. Each vignette is a wakeup call that can cause the audience enough discomfort to keep them thinking about the issues presented, which include: stealing, smoking, drugs, cheating, drinking and driving, suicide and internet bullying and dangers. The Maverick Players will perform “Bad Call” 13 times, from Feb. 13 to 17. Over 1,000 teenagers from Broward and Dade Counties will attend the play. The public will have an opportunity to see it on Feb., 17, at 7 p.m., in the Maverick Theater. Tickets are $10 and seating is limited. The Maverick Players will soon begin preparing for the April performance of “The 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”. Archbishop McCarthy High School is located at 5451 South Flamingo Road, in Southwest Ranches. Middle Schools interested in attending Bad Call should contact Cindy Keegan at 954-557-4449 or by email at ckeegan@McCarthyhigh.org. AMHS Maverick Players rehearse for “Bad Call”. think twice about where she wants to deliver her newest bundle of joy. All of her pregnancies that have led to children, Josiah, 8, Elijah, 6, Ella, 4, Lyla, 2, and most recently baby Lydia, who was born in March, have been under the care of the Miami Maternity Center. The 32-year old mother of five says she wanted a natural alternative to the standard hospital and OB/GYN birthing experience, and the Miami Maternity Center delivers just that. “I like that they allow your body to do what’s intended when it comes to labor,” said Figueroa, who is married to husband Efrain. “I like that I am not poked and prodded and there are people there to encourage me,” Figueroa is one of a growing number of moms-to-be turning to the Miami Maternity Center. Caring for mothers and families since 1995, the Miami Maternity Center provides top quality prenatal care, a soothing home-like setting for natural birth, and postpartum care for moms and their new baby. “Our slogan is ‘A Better Place to Have Your Baby,” said Carol Williams, midwife and owner of Miami Maternity Center. The dedicated staff of midwives, midwifery assistants and labor coaches at the Miami Maternity Center provide a birthing alternative to hundreds of families each year. Williams says they work off a simple philosophy; that everything they do is for the comfort, health, and well-being of their mommies and babies. It is a return to the traditional, non-invasive form of birth, where nature is allowed to take its course and the pregnancy and labor develops without intervention. If an indication arises that calls for intervention, only then do they intervene. Otherwise, it is all natural, with no pain medicines, epidurals or need to induce or speed up labor. “Women have been having babies for thousands of years. The body knows what to do,” said Williams. Among the many advantages they offer, moms come to the same place for their prenatal visits as they do for birth. When they come in labor, they’ll see the same staff that has been caring for them over many months, unlike many OB/GYN’s, who use a rotating

on-call schedule. The connection becomes so unique, that in many instances, the moms stay in touch for many years. “Our clients become like family members,” said Williams. Moms are given the choice of how they want labor and birth to happen. They are free to walk around during labor and find the position that provides them the most comfort. The same philosophy holds for the delivery. Instead of using drugs, the Miami Maternity Center encourages moms to use natural pain management and relaxation techniques like massage or hydrotherapy. “The woman is free to listen to her own body and do what makes her most comfortable,” said Williams. Williams says their birthing alternatives reduce the risk of unnecessary procedures, like enemas and intravaneuous fluids, as well as hospital borne infections. Most importantly, the baby never leaves mom’s side once they are born for the utmost in safety. “We love what we do. Each of our moms is like our sister or daughter,” said Williams.
The Miami Maternity Center works with most insurance companies and HMOs. They also accept Medicaid and offer a cash package price of $4,000 that is all inclusive. They offer water births, childbirth and early pregnancy classes, and classes for dads. The Miami Maternity Center is located at 140 NE 119 Street in Miami. To make an appointment, phone them at 1-305-754-2229 or visit them online at www. miamimaternitycenter.net.

new tools to defend residential Mortgage foreclosures By omaR J. aRcia, eSq. FoRecLoSuRe DeFenSe anD conSumeR BankRuPTcy PRoTecTion aTToRney
S
o far, two large law firMs in south floriDa have been forceD
to close their foreclosure practice as a result of claims and court decisions that these firms provided false information in order to improperly repossess properties on behalf of their lender clients. As a result of the actions by these firms -which led to their demise – new tools have emerged to successfully defend residential mortgage foreclosures.
forensic Mortgage audit A forensic mortgage audit involves an in depth analysis of the loan transaction by a lending compliance expert to uncover violations of federal and state lending laws committed by the original lender. These violations may even be attributable to the current lender under certain circumstances. If presented in a timely manner, the findings from a forensic mortgage audit may be used to aggressively defend a foreclosure action, to offset and reduce the amount owed on the loan obligation, and to even negotiate a worthwhile modified or restructured loan.
securitization analysis During the real estate boom from 2003 to 2007, many lenders sold groups of mortgages in “securitized pools” to investment trusts on Wall Street. These trusts were created as investment tools that allowed lenders and investors to receive highly preferential tax treatment. In order to receive these tax benefits, however, strict regulations had to be followed. A securitization analysis by a qualified and credible firm can reveal whether an individual loan transaction was properly and timely transferred to a valid trust, i.e., was the loan properly “securitized.” If the loan obligation is proven not to have been properly securitized, an investment trust cannot foreclose.
transfer history analysis Even if the loan is not part of an investment trust, many loans have been sold multiple times. Each time a loan was sold, certain legal transfer requirements had to be fulfilled to legalize the transfer and to allow the new transferee to foreclose, if necessary. A transfer history analysis tracks the mortgage from its originator to the true current legal owner and holder of the obligation, and also identifies any breaks in the transfer chain which could prevent the current lender from foreclosing. In some cases, this analysis has uncovered that certain lenders even forged mortgage assignment documents through the use of so-called “robo-signers” to overcome transfer issues, which led to findings of fraud and the cancellation of the mortgage debt altogether. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online at www.arcialawfirm.com. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

are resolved by an agreement signed by both parties. This can be done by the parties themselves or as a result of a mediation. Although in many instances in our daily lives we can often “change our minds” after weighing a decision we may have made, this is not usually the case when dealing with legally binding agreements. It is extremely important to know this before you sign on the dotted line and not afterwards. It is not uncommon for a divorced spouse to meet with me for purposes of reviewing an Agreement that they already entered and are not happy with. I often hear “I made a mistake”, “I didn’t know what I was reading”, or “I changed my mind”. In each of those circumstances, there is probably nothing I can do to release them from a binding agreement. Unless someone can show they entered into an agreement based upon duress or fraud was involved (i.e. false financial information), it is binding and legally enforceable.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
In spite of the binding nature of these Agreements, there are situations when a Modification can be sought. In order to be successful in obtaining a modification, a party must show that there has been “a substantial change of circumstance”. This change must be unanticipated at the time of the final hearing and involuntary. For instance, if someone losses his/her job due to the economy, then a modification of child support or alimony can be achieved. However, if someone quits their job or loses their job due to something they could control (i.e. stealing money), then that person could not modify their past obligation because it was not involuntary. Even if there is a substantial change of a circumstance, not everything can be modified. Child support or alimony can generally be modified if the above conditions are met. There are times, however, when certain forms of alimony cannot be modified. There are situations when alimony payments are listed in an Agreement as “non modifiable” as to amount or duration. A Parenting Plan can also be modified if the “substantial change” requirement is met and the change is in the best interests of the minor children. Agreements concerning equitable distribution cannot however be modified. I urge anyone who is considering entering into a binding written agreement to be absolutely sure that he/she can comply with the terms. Unlike many instances in life, one cannot simply change one’s mind. If you have any questions please feel free to contact my office for a free consultation at 954 385-9160.

real estate
chasing the real estate Market – an elusive challenge By Zona hoRTon, cRS, GRi, e-PRo
M
y buyers are asking Me, “shoulD i buy now or
wait, because aren’t the prices going to drop?” My Sellers are asking me, “Should I sell now or wait, because aren’t the prices going to rebound?” Buyers may wait for the prices to drop only to be paying out great sums of money on rentals – when they could be experiencing tremendous tax advantages. I have had buyers who rented only to put their money into retirement accounts. You cannot live inside your IRA. “You are not taking money from your IRA when you buy a home; you are replacing one housing expense (rent) which has no potential for a return on investment with another (mortgage payment) that does give you an opportunity for a return,” according to Steve Harney, (kcmblog.com). Today, in the vast majority of the country, renting is actually more expensive than owning, and history has proven that tenants DO NOT invest the difference in their rent and mortgage payments. Owning a home creates wealth.
For my Sellers: Even though I have the latest tools to analyze what our local market has done over the past fifteen months, it is no easy task to predict market trends. However, Steve Harney, our prominent Real Estate prognosticator, states that buyers will return: “In 2011, a lack of consumer confidence in the overall economy dramatically impacted the housing market. Buyers were afraid to make a purchasing decision on any big ticket item. By the end of 2011, consumer confidence began to return and sales increased. Economic conditions will continue to improve throughout 2012 and consumer sentiment will solidify. Once that happens, home buyers will realize that now is the time to buy.” Steve also predicts that foreclosures will increase. He further predicts that prices will soften and that short sales will increase. Now is the time to stop chasing the market. This is the time to buy; this is the time to sell. For buyers, you could be taking advantage of the tax savings. For Sellers, you want to cash in on the old and go after the new – while those mortgage rates are still historically low. No one knows when the prices may rebound; however, prices will never reach the historic bubble we experienced from 2005-2008. Call me today to discuss your options. Call me today if you, or someone you know, are looking to buy or sell a residence. I am home for you! Call 954-306-7298 or send an email to zonster@aol.com.

he hcg Diet has becoMe very popular lately. it
has been featured on the Dr Oz show and Fox news. Why? Because it works! But first of all, what is the hCG diet? It is not a new diet and has been used successfully for weight loss since 1953 when a British endocrinologist Dr A.T.W. Simeons discovered its weight loss effects. Dr Simeons presented his paper to the medical community in the 50’s stating that a small amount of hCG would target the hypothalamus gland within the brain to release fat stores in the body. The trapped fat would release nutrition and calories for use as energy. This released fat feeds the body so dieters don’t experience the hunger and exhaustion that normally accompanies a low calorie diet. A study in 2010 in The Bariatrician (a journal published by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians) stated that hCG does work and found that individuals lost 30% more weight than individuals on a low calorie diet alone. Along with all of this popularity comes a lot of misinformation about the diet, with a lot of companies jumping on the hCG popularity bandwagon and selling homeopathic hCG and hCG online and leading people to believe they are receiving and doing the real hCG diet when in fact they are not. There are also a lot of companies adding hCG to their existing weight loss protocols including diets involving appetite suppressants, cookies, shakes etc and calling it “the hCG diet” or watering down the hCG and not giving it in the correct dosages. So let’s separate facts from fiction. First of all hCG is a prescription medication and can only be prescribed by a physician once a complete physical has been performed. There is no such thing as homeopathic hCG. HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotrophin, which is a complex aminopeptide protein, produced during pregnancy. Homeopathic hCG has at best trace amounts of hCG in it, if even that. Real pharmaceutical hCG cannot be purchased online or over the counter without seeing a physician. The hCG protocol is very simple to follow but it is a scientific program and it has to be followed correctly to get the best results. My initial training with hCG was under a doctor who opened one of the first hCG clinic’s in 2007. Since that time, I have put thousands of successful clients through this program with a 99% success rate and am considered an expert in the field. During that time I have also learned how to work the program in many ways to achieve the maximum weight loss results for my clients. Experience and proper guidance throughout any weight loss program is an important factor to getting the best results, but particularly with the hCG diet. It is not a regular diet and many little things that people do that they are not even aware of can slow down or stop the rapid weight loss. Of course receiving hCG from an FDA approved pharmacy and proper medical supervision are equally important. What is the School of Rock? The School of
Rock is a performance-based music school for kids. Using classic rock as our teaching example, we combine private instruction with rehearsals and jam sessions to provide a unique, compelling approach to learning.
What is the school’s teaching philosophy?
A big part of our approach is that people learn music by doing. Our students not only are motivated by playing with others, but learn how to prepare for performances and work with

What types of programs do you offer? We
offer both private lessons and group rehearsals/jam sessions. Students take a 45-minute weekly private lesson combined with a weekly group rehearsal. For beginning students, the

What credentials do your instructors have?
All of our instructors are actively performing musicians. They are all well versed in music theory, reading, and are all experts on their instruments.
What is your background and how did you get into this business? I’ve played music since I
was eight, starting with piano lessons. When I was a teenager I took up guitar, but for many years I stopped playing. When I moved to Florida 11 years ago, I started playing again and got increasingly more involved with music as my kids became interested in music. it's their business
beso real boutique is bringing sexy back By DeBBy Teich
T
he beso real boutique in cooper city was founded on the belief that regardless of your shape, you should be able to find clothing that is on-trend and makes you feel your best! It offers shoppers unique, flattering, and memorable pieces from size small to 3X. “Women should embrace themselves, whether they are skinny or curvy,” said Owner Victoria Sanjurjo. “Sexy comes from within!” On Feb. 10, the boutique will pamper customers with a Heartbreaker-themed Shopping Party. There will be complimentary sweet treats, beauty consultations and some great discounts. “The number one person that a woman should show love to on Valentine's Day - and any day - is herself,” said Victoria. Victoria provided answers to some commonly asked questions about the BeSo Real Boutique.
Why did you open the store? I am a full time
physician, mom, and wife, but I always had a passion for fashion. I often found it difficult to find stylish clothing for women of all shapes and sizes, so I decided to provide an accessible solution. Women can find pieces at BeSo Real that flatter their frame and that are chic, sexy, and on-trend.
Why is it important to you to “bring sexy back”? Women often get lost in being every-
thing but a woman. They get so busy being the mother, wife, executive, student, chauffeur, etc., that they forget to take care of themselves. The outside reflects the inside and confidence comes from within. When a woman chooses to be confident, she becomes radiant. We love to assist with this growth process by helping women love the clothes they wear.
What is your mission? To give women a
fashionable, personable, and customized shopping experience with a wide range of items to select from. Our mission is at the fiber of our existence, our name: BeSo Real. Our name encourages women to be themselves. It also reads "Real Kiss" in Spanish (Beso Real), because there is nothing sexier and more enticing than a real kiss.
How is your belief system incorporated into the store? From the moment you walk in, we
want you to feel like you are a part of an experience. From the decor to the selection, it is all customized and offers a ton of variety. A piece of clothing can make you stand up straighter, smile brighter, and strut - not just walk - out the door. We want you to walk out elated with your purchase.

Describe your staff. My staff is fabulous! They know how to dress women. They are friendly and outgoing and have their finger on the industry. They understand how to mix and match classic must-haves with emerging trends. What kind of merchandise do you carry? We
sell clothing, accessories and shoes. Most items range in price from $15 to $80. We really try to emphasize local designers and shop for fashion-forward and flattering clothing. We aim for unique and impactful pieces that are sexy without being vulgar.
What types of dresses do you sell? We sell all kinds, from maxi to mini. The selection includes stunning cocktail and party dresses, work appropriate pieces, and boho-chic sun dresses that embody South Florida's playful and colorful style.
What types of accessories do you sell? We carry cus-
tom jewelry, exhibit pieces from local designers and statement jewelry. We believe that accessories can turn the notch up on any outfit. If you throw a bold, chunky necklace on a classic, little black dress, your outfit goes to another level. We also carry rings, bracelets, necklaces, bags, belts, shoes, and sunglasses.
Describe the shoe selection. BeSo Real loves a stiletto, but we also carry wedges, boots, and sandals.
Describe the décor of the store? The space is beautiful. It is very modern, with clean lines, metallic fixtures and flares of color here and there to add some sassiness. Our signature lip couch is always ready for a photo-op too. Jose Graterol, from Josedesigns.com, helped to visualize the store's decor. Do you plan special events? Liana Lozada,
social media diva, handles our special events. She will be coordinating February's party and also handled our New Year's Eve event, a themed shopping party. We had customized cupcakes by My Cupcake Love, giveaways from Wow Brows Studio in Cooper City, and complimentary threading for guests. It was fabulous!
Do you place special orders for customers? Yes, we take
requests for items in different colors and sizes. If we can find it, it's yours. We call our clients as soon as their requests are in. We also do layaway.
Do you offer a discount for new customers? Yes, new cus-
tomers receive 10% off their first purchase. We also have a very generous rewards program and our BeSo Real Sexy Club.
The BeSo Real Boutique is located at 9319 Sheridan Street (Inside the Publix Plaza), in Cooper City. It is open Mon. to Sat., from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. For information, call 954-4415119, like the Facebook Page: BeSo Real Boutique, or follow the store on Twitter: @ShopBeSoReal.

Braving 50 degree weather, the officers and members of the Respect Life Club at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School, arrived early on January 14 to begin making hot chocolate for the 11th Annual "Walk for Life" walkers. The three hour walk drew hundreds of people, ranging in age from three months to 71 years. Funds raised at the walk will benefit the Hollywood Respect Life Office, which provides counseling, pregnancy tests, and material assistance to women and families in need.
