IT'S THEIR BUSINESS

Varicose Veins? Might be More than Meets the Eye BY JOHN BRODIE

S

offer Vein and Vascular, a division of the Soffer Health Institute, specializes in treatment for varicose and spider veins. Dr Ariel Soffer is a Nationally Recognized Vein Expert and board certified Cardiovascular Specialist. If you experience restless legs, numbness, tingling, cramping, burning, swelling or an achy feeling in your legs the Soffer vein experts can help. It is quite common for these symptoms to develop as men and women age. Besides the discomfort it can make you want to hide your legs as spider veins and varicose veins become very visible. Lymphdema (a condition that occurs when the network of vessels, veins and arteries that circulate fluids through is not functioning properly) will cause swelling and damage to the skin. Fortunately these conditions are all

treatable. For many years people have had to go to Soffer’s facility in Miami for treatment but Soffer Vein and Vascular now has a locationsin Deerfield Beach, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Aventura, North Miami Beach and Hialeah/Miami Lakes. Dr. Soffer is a clear leader in his field. For several years he was featured in the ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion.” Adam Kustin, a company spokesperson commented, “In this field, he is as good as it gets, yet the man is so kind, so warm and so approachable, it has spawned the growth of this practice. You want the best,” said Kustin. “Two people can walk in with the same bulging vein issue, but there’s no way to tell if either has any real underlying health issues. It’s more than just cosmetic.” This is why it is so important to see someone with the appropriate expertise and not someone merely offering a cosmetic fix. “Sometimes people aren’t bothered by the bulging vein but they experience achy, very tired legs, numbness or restless legs and they never associate these “symptoms” with varicose veins. That’s why seeing a doctor as qualified as Dr. Soffer and his staff becomes so vital.” Treatment is usually simple. “And painfree,” Adam added. “Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. The new lasers are very low risk, super accurate and extremely effective. We can also inject saline. It depends on the severity.” Adam continued stating that Dr. Soffer “wants to help people prevent these life-threatening issues BEFORE they take a toll. Before they compromise how a patient lives life. He SEES people pain free,

enjoying life again who didn’t even know it was possible for them. They never connected the dots, he does.” If you are experiencing any pain or swelling in your legs or want to get back more youthful looking beautiful legs, Soffer’s signature minimally invasive vein treatments are a great solution. Soffer Vein and Vascular with six locations will provide a Complimentary vein screening available by appointment only for new patients 18 and older. Patients can discuss their concerns with the Soffer medical staff and review their best options for treatment. There is no obligation to pursue treatment. Most insurances are accepted. Dr. Soffer plans to open a Weston location next. Members of his staff speak Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese.

We Are All Eagles Now

F

ebruary 14, 2018, is a date that will forever be etched in all our minds, just like 9-11. It is virtually impossible to come across a person in the community who wasn’t personally impacted by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Seventeen innocent people – 14 students along with three faculty members – lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. Fifteen additional people were wounded. It is hard for anyone to reconcile what happened with any sense of normalcy or justice. There are many questions still unanswered: How could someone become filled with such hate and rage? Why do we allow teenagers to easily purchase assault weapons? How can we keep our children safe? What keeps us going, however, is what we’ve heard from the friends and family of the victims: we, as a community, are better off having known them. They were coaches who rushed to the aid of defenseless students; seniors with aspirations for higher education; freshman just beginning to discover who they are; athletes; band members; and, most importantly, they were fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and friends. As we slowly start to piece together our new normal, let us never forget the 17 innocent lives lost, along with the thousands of survivors who will forever bear both physical and emotional scars from that fateful day. In the hours and days following the attack, our community rallied together. Now that the days have turned to weeks, we must continue to band together and show our support to the Parkland community. The Eagles will soar once more. Sincerely, “The Auto Air Conditioning Specialist” Family Owned & Operated Since 1976

City of Fort Lauderdale Is Accepting Nominations for Walk of Fame BY DEBBY TEICH

I

f you know someone who is engaged civically in the City of Fort Lauderdale, they may be the next person to receive a marble paver on the Walk of Fame, located on the beach along the east side of A1A at Las Olas Boulevard. The City of Fort Lauderdale is currently accepting nominations for the 2018 Great American Beach Party Walk of Fame. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 6. The City established the Walk of Fame in 2010 at the inaugural Great American Beach Party to pay tribute to the legendary Connie Francis on the 50th Anniversary of “Where the Boys Are,” the 1960 film which made Fort Lauderdale an overnight sensation and a “must see” destination for visitors. Walk of Fame Honorees are recognized for distinguishing themselves in their respective fields, while making lifelong, positive contributions to the City of Fort Lauderdale. They receive a commemorative marble paver that is placed in the Walk of Fame to memorialize their outstanding accomplishments. As many as four honorees will be selected by a Walk of Fame Committee, appointed by the City Commission, that is made up of previous winners or their designees. The application includes: a description of the nominee’s accomplishments or contributions to the community, such as civic responsibility, financial contributions, volunteer service, projects accomplished, or other categories; an explanation

of why the nominee is deserving of the award; and a brief biography, resume or any other background information about the nominee. 2017 winners included: ▸▸ Dr. George L. Hanbury II – As City Manager of the City of Fort Lauderdale from 1990 to 1998, he oversaw the completion of many redevelopment projects, including the renovation of Ft. Lauderdale Beach, creation of Riverwalk and the Arts and Science District, and revitalization of Las Olas Blvd., while also securing a voter approved $35 million bond referendum to expand, upgrade, and improve the entire City parks system. ▸▸ The Motwani Family – Headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, the family’s company, Merrimac Ventures, is one of South Florida’s leading real estate management, investment and development businesses. ▸▸ Kaye Pearson – The late Kaye Pearson founded Show Management to operate the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, which he grew into the largest, most recognizable boat show in the world. ▸▸ Zloch Brothers – The Zloch brothers (William, Chuck, and James) have contributed to Ft. Lauderdale’s advancement through their distinguished judicial, business, legal, and civic leadership. Walk of Fame Honorees will be announced at the Great American Beach Party, a Fort Lauderdale

tradition that takes place on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Celebrate with family and friends as a portion of Fort Lauderdale’s beach transforms into an entertainment mecca. The free, family event includes live bands, family beach games, a military tribute, a sand sculpting contest, DJ, classic car show, an art show, vendors and exhibitors, an induction into Fort Lauderdale’s very own Walk of Fame and more. Fly Day: Rotary Club & Challenge Air Gave Kids the Ride of their Lives BY HELEN PENLAND

O

n January 27th, the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale and Challenge Air for Kids & Friends presented a life-changing event. The annual Fly Day was held for 72 local children with special needs, giving them the opportunity to ride in small aircraft. For 21 years the Rotary Club has been involved with this exceptional, day-long occasion staged at Banyan Air Services located at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. Challenge Air is a nonprofit organization from Dallas, Texas that has now given such rides to over 36,000 children across this county. The plan was to give each child the chance to experience flight and actually take controls of the yoke. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t comply as it was extremely windy and the planes had to stay on the 12 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYFORTLAUDERDALE.COM

ground. April Culver from Challenge Air said, “The day was not a loss, we improvised and put the kids along with a parent in the plane and allowed them to taxi the runway for a 10-minute loop around the airport!” There were activities and displays of a fire truck, therapy ponies the kids could interact with, and a Blue Angels-themed Trans Am. The day was filled with big smiles, wide eyes, and cheers as all the children “earned their wings.” Terry Robinson, Rotary Chairman for Fly Day, recognized the many volunteers and sponsors saying, “Each plays their role in the success of this event which is a very special day for some very special kids. What an honor it is for all of us involved being a part of

this day of fun and flight. Everyone who participates benefits.” In particular, he mentioned the 16 pilots who participated, Executive Airport, Banyan Air, Carabbas of Pompano, Silver Lining Catering, and Ben & Jerry’s. Carabba’s feeds about 300 people every year. He also noted this year, the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale offered considerable financial support and supplied the lion’s share (80 of 120 total) volunteers, including people in key roles which makes the event run as well as it does. He continued: “I have a great team I am fortunate to work with and it is a privilege for all of us involved to be a part of the event.” For more information about Challenge Air, go to www.challengeair.org. The Bonnet House: a Spectacular Piece of History BY HELEN PENLAND

W

hether you are a visitor or a resident, if you have never visited the Bonnet House, take the time to do so. A beautiful 35-acre estate nestled in the midst of sprawling businesses and condominiums, the property on Fort Lauderdale’s beach is a historical monument full of lush gardens, art, and of course – lovely adornment. The property on which the home stands was a wedding gift to artist Frederic Clay Bartlett and his second wife, Helen Birch from her father, Hugh Taylor Birch. The couple began building the home in 1920. Unfortunately, Helen had an untimely death in 1925. In 1931 Frederic married Evelyn Fortune Lilly. After their marriage, there was a “prolific period of embellishing.” They added many decorative features that endear visitors to this day. Although Frederic passed away in 1953, Evelyn returned every winter until 1995. She gave the Bonnet House to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in 1983. At that time, it was the largest charitable gift in the state’s history. She wished for it to be preserved for future generations to enjoy and love. In 1984 the site was listed on the National Register of

Go Green at Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Parade & Festival BY STACEY BOMSER

M

ay the luck of the Irish be with those who attend the 2018 Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival on Saturday, March 10th. The festivities kick off the night before with traditional Irish music and céili (group) dancing led by Ronan McCormack, one of the original Riverdance cast members. It’s a tradition in Ireland for people to gather on a fine day at the crossroads to play music and dance. Event organizers will recreate this on Los Olas Boulevard, between Andrews and 1st Street. Join them at 5pm on Friday, March 9th, as they attempt to dance the world’s longest “Walls of Limerick,” one of the simplest Irish céili. Ronan McCormack will demonstrate along with some of Fort Lauderdale’s premier Irish Step dancers. The following day, the celebration begins bright and early at Huizenga Plaza with the Shamrock Run at 7am, followed by the Lucky Little Leprechaun Dashes for children. Festivities continue throughout the morning with live music and entertainment leading up to South Florida’s largest St. Patrick’s Parade. The Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival presented by The Law Firm of Kelley/Uustal starts at noon and travels through the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Mayor John P. “Jack” Seiler is this year’s Grand Marshal. He has served as mayor since 2009 and was instrumental in spearheading the return of the St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival in 2010, after a nearly two-decade hiatus.

14 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYFORTLAUDERDALE.COM

Mayor Seiler will lead the parade, which will feature more than 100 decorative floats, pipe and drum corps, bagpipers, marching bands, Irish dancers, street performers, scout troops, local sports teams, Veterans groups, and much more. Young Professionals Catch Z’s & Raise $’s for Homeless Youth BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S

adly, not everyone is fortunate to have a roof over their head and a comfortable bed to sleep on every night. On an average Covenant House shelters 1,920 kids nightly, cares for 10,000 youth in residential programs, and reached 80,000 homeless kids in the past year. The Covenant House “Sleep Out” was launched 6 years ago in an effort to bring in funding and generate exposure for the cause. They are always recruiting business and community leaders, including up and comers to participate in the nationwide initiative. Approximately 50 young professionals will sleep out at Covenant House Florida as part of “Sleep Out: Young Professionals Edition” to raise awareness for the plight of kids on the street while raising money to support the homeless and runaway youth which the nonprofit organization helps. They will get to know the young people and help them learn and grow while sleeping outside in solidarity with them. The “Sleep Out” movement will take place on March 23rd at 7:00 pm and end on March 24th at 7:00 am on the pavement of the Covenant House Florida parking lot, 733 Breakers Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale. Participants will arrive onsite, have dinner with

the youth in the shelter’s cafeteria, participate in a short orientation, and head outside for the night prepared with a cardboard box and sleeping bag. This program was designed to increase knowledge and create awareness of the unfortunate problem that affects so many. Just like any charitable event, those participating

will raise funds by reaching out to family, friends, and colleagues to support their effort. Additionally, individual web pages are created for each person to obtain online contributions. Last year, Covenant House Florida’s Young Professionals raised more than $45,000, and its Sleep Out: Executive Edition brought in over $231,200 including a $100,000 challenge grant from The Salah Foundation. Nationwide, 1,300+ executives slept out and raised more than $7 million. “Covenant House Florida is dear to my heart. It is a program unlike many I have seen – providing kids and young adults in our community, and throughout, the nation with a stepping stone, offering them hope and opportunity through multiple onsite programs. Kids should not be subjected to homelessness – which makes them vulnerable to human trafficking, gangs, drug addiction, chronic trauma, and repeated generational cycles,” said Cassie Urbashich, Development Coordinator at Covenant House Florida. “I am Sleeping Out because I want the kids at Covenant House Florida today and tomorrow to find their positive pathway – a pathway of independence and success.” For more information, to donate or participate, please call 954561-5559 or 800-683-8338, or visit covenanthousefl.org. FEATURE STORY BY BEVERLY PERKINS

F

or over 2 decades, All Florida Title Company has been providing comprehensive title and ancillary services for every type of real estate transaction, regardless of its size, complexity, or differences. Developers, buyers, sellers, realtors, investors, and lenders have known the company to be a true partner in every transaction. At the helm of the operation is owner Attorney Marc Brown, P.A. He recently acquired the title company at the beginning of the year as a perfect complement to his law firm. During his 11-year career thus far, his focus has been on real estate. So, it was only natural to combine the two, and have a full-service attorney owned title company which can handle all commercial and residential real estate issues and closings. Marc Brown personally reviews every file to be sure clients receive the best possible results. His meticulous hands-on approach ensures that all aspects of title services, as well as all legalities that may arise are addressed and handled effectively and efficiently through his title company or his law firm. Attorney Marc Brown took the time to answer some frequently asked questions about his practice. What are the main areas of practice at the firm? Our main focus is real estate transactions as we have a full-service title company in addition to the law firm. We also handle real estate litigation issues, landlord/tenant matters, collections, contract disputes, foreclosures and general business matters as well. What differentiates your firm from other law firms? It sounds pretty cliché, but we put the client first no matter what. We’re easily available and I respond to emails at all hours of the day if not available by phone. My staff has been working with our clients through the title company for several years now even before I acquired it, and have formed amazing relationships which lead them to continue using us. Besides being knowledgeable, my staff is also invested in the firm and we make sure any clients’ issues/requests are followed up on and addressed the same day. What types of Comprehensive Title Services do you offer? All Florida Title Company assists with all aspects of title and real property transactions, including:

Our clients are never left wondering about the status of their matter. Clear, consistent communication is a core value for us, as are responsiveness and accessibility. When anyone has questions and concerns, we aim to respond the very same day. Additionally, our secure client portal makes it easy to track the progress of their matter. Our online title premium and net sheet calculators allow clients to check the status of their file at any time, and communicate quickly and efficiently with our team of title and real estate professionals. It is also a convenient way to understand the costs involved in the transaction. Our work, and our fees will never be a mystery. Myself and my committed professionals at All Florida Title Company work to swiftly and successfully deliver a clear and marketable title

to our clients. We want their transaction closed and concluded, and work tirelessly to resolve a purchase or sale with the professionalism, service and trust each client deserves. We promise competitive rates, consistent communication and fantastic service. What are the key things that people should consider before hiring a lawyer? Anyone in the position of hiring an attorney should obviously consider the attorney’s background and experience, but they should also take into consideration the size of the firm. A smaller firm gives clients much more personal attention. Does the firm offer free consultations? Yes, we certainly offer potential clients complimentary consultations to access their needs and see if we can help them. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you or your firm? We offer flat fees that are extremely reasonable. I am available to meet anywhere in South Florida. We have an office by appointment in West Palm Beach, as well as Plantation if it’s more accommodating for the client.

City of Fort Lauderdale Holds Ribbon Cutting for New Turf at Mills Pond Park BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he City of Fort Lauderdale and Fort Lauderdale Select Soccer Club recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new “field of dreams.” The celebration was for the completion of the synthetic turf athletic fields at Mills Pond Park. Approximately 150 people attended the ribbon cutting, which was done in a “grand opening” style. There was a large tent and light refreshments were served. Fort Lauderdale Select U16 also played a soccer match. Some of the dignitaries in attendance included: Mayor

John P. “Jack” Seiler, Vice Mayor Bruce G. Roberts, Commissioner Dean J. Trantalis, Commissioner Robert L. McKinzie, and Commissioner Romney Rogers. The installation of the three turf fields provides a play space for soccer and lacrosse, which continue to grow in popularity. Neighbors that play these sports now have a premier play space in Fort Lauderdale that is centrally located. “I am so excited about the new fields,” said Ft. Lauderdale resident Betty McGovern. “It is wonderful that my son will now be able to play soccer on state-ofthe art fields. Mills Pond Park is conveniently located in NW Fort Lauderdale and is easily accessible from I-95. The 130acre park and has a softball complex with five softball fields, three football fields, (now three turf soccer/ lacrosse fields), an RC track, water skiing, six pavilions, and an electronic vehicle charging station. There is also an assembly hall for meetings and parties. The park offers adult softball leagues that play five nights a week and adult flag football leagues that play two nights a week. The softball complex hosts softball tournaments each Saturday. In the summer and fall months, youth tackle football is offered as well. For information, visit www.fortlauderdale.gov.

Bayview Elementary Family STEM Night Offers Hands-on Learning BY STACEY BOMSER

F

amily STEM Night is one of the most popular nights of the year for students and parents at Bayview Elementary School. For nearly ten years, the school’s PTA has been organizing this event which promotes hands-on learning and experimentation with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

“We are proud to offer STEM Night to our families every year,” states Principal Tonya Frost. “It is a great way for students and their families to learn in an interactive environment. Each year more and more children attend the event, which shows it is something the children and their families enjoy.”

Proof of that is in the glowing comments received from attendees. One student shared, “STEM Night is so much fun. I learned a lot.” In noting their appreciation for organizing the annual educational event, one parent stated, “We love it!” Family STEM Night provided 20 interactive activities, experiments and demonstra-

tions to amaze children and adults alike. Participants were able to create geometrical origami, write computer programming code to move an Ozobot (pocket-sized robot), and hold an arthropod (invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton) in the palm of their hand.

All of the experiments and projects were suited for elementary-age students. Parent volunteers manned each station to help the younger students. Frost says Family STEM Night complements the school’s science curriculum. “We work to integrate our curricula by way of project-based learning, as we integrate science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, math, and social studies in a concept called STREAMS. Our goal is to show students how science impacts every aspect of their lives, and that our students can impact science in return.” Family STEM Night is just one of many programs presented by the Bayview Elementary PTA to enhance the school’s already robust curriculum. “It is this great partnership that truly benefits the students at Bayview,” notes Frost. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, ne needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

Spring Break Ideas for Families Not Traveling

Give the kids the thrill of a lifetime while riding on an airboat through the untouched landscape of the Everglades. You will get to see some of Florida’s most exotic wild life including, of course the American Alligator. For more info contact Everglades Holliday Park at 954-434-8111 choose from multi-star resorts like the Margaritaville Beach Resort or find something a bit less expensive off the coast. Or, your family could check out marine life at the Miami Seaquarium. The opportunities are almost endless and, in many cases, just a short drive away.

Favorites for family time on the Xbox or PS4 include sing-along games like American Idol, Sports contest like the Madden football franchise or even Dance Revolution.

COMMUNITY NEWS

ArtServe Goes Above & Beyond to Serve the Creative Community BY BEVERLY PERKINS

F

ortunately, many local artists know about Ft. Lauderdale’s hidden gem. Although not hidden, since the building sits on Sunrise Boulevard with thousands of cars passing it each day, many locals do not know what goes on inside the large structure with many windows. The facility is ArtServe, an award-winning non-profit organization which has been supporting the arts for almost three decades. ArtServe works quietly behind the scenes and has helped jump-start the careers of many now successful artists and organizations. It has made an indelible mark on the cultural landscape in South Florida. Located at the east end of Holiday Park, the centrally situated space has been convenient for all artists following their dream. “The unique thing about ArtServe,” notes Jaye Abbate, ArtServe President and CEO, “is that we don’t make art … we help the artists and cultural organizations that do make art thrive and flourish. As we like to say, we help them turn their art into business. So, much of the work we do is not visible on a daily basis as we cultivate community relationships that generate new business opportunities and exposure for artists, develop programs that educate, present

exhibits that provide gallery experience and sales for artists, and improve our multipurpose facility so artists of all genres and the public at large can find a creative home that fits their budget.” From exhibitions and events to classes and happenings around town, there is an activity for everyone to enjoy. The cultural hub may have an artist teaching painting technique, a dance troupe hosting a master class, a vocal group rehearsing for a show, young ones experimenting with watercolors, corporate teams developing business solutions, nonprofits hosting luncheons, workshops for those wanting to teach or take, and so much more. Additionally, the gift shop is filled with one-of-a-kind art pieces for visitors to purchase. “For over a decade we’ve made ArtServe our headquarters,” says Pam Dearden, Executive Director of Gold Coast Jazz Society. “The convenient, afford-

able location has helped us keep our administrative costs low while keeping our profile high. And as a fellow nonprofit, they truly understand our needs and limitations.” Artist Chris Cruz adds, “The knowledge acquired through ArtServe’s workshops surpassed my expectations. I would have never been able to be as successful in my career as I am today if not for all the programs available to me in ArtServe.” For more information, please visit artserve.org, email information@artserve.org, or call 954-462-8190. ArtServe is located at 1350 E. Sunrise Boulevard, Ft. Lauderdale.
