Watchman , a new treatment to prevent stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib) TM
A new alternative to blood thinners Atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, is among the leading causes of stroke in the United States. The WatchmanTM procedure, a new treatment option approved by the FDA, can reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib).
The Watchman procedure takes about one hour, is performed through a catheter and requires only a local anesthetic. The Watchman device is used to close the left atrial appendage where 90 to 95 percent of the clots form in patients with non-valvular AFib. The risk of the procedure is low, and patients typically go home the morning after the procedure.
Watchman, a surgical procedure which includes the implantation of a device, is good news for the millions of people affected by AFib, whose stroke risk is four to five times higher compared to the general population. Robert J. Cubeddu, MD Treatment with Watchman might prevent approximately 750,000 annual hospitalizations due to strokes related to AFib.
Currently, Watchman is the only approved interventional treatment for closure of the left atrial appendage for stroke prevention. Aside from the reduction in stroke, the major advantage of the Watchman procedure is the ability of the patient to stop taking blood thinners permanently.
Preventing the disability associated with stroke is imperative, especially since strokes caused by AFib tend to be more severe than those that are attributed to other causes. Plus, with the increase in the population of aging boomers, the number of AFib-related stroke victims is expected to rise significantly. According to Dr. Robert J. Cubeddu, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida, AFib is very common among patients over 65 years of age, and is therefore prevalent in South Florida, a retirement hub. Most patients with AFib are currently taking blood thinners also known as anticoagulants. “Blood thinners are required for a lifetime, and their use is often limited by their side-effects, and the need for regular bloodwork and strict adherence to medication protocols,” said Dr. Cubeddu. “In addition to those side-effects, several studies have suggested that up to 40 percent of patients with AFib are poor candidates for the blood thinners due to a history of internal bleeding, a diagnosis of peptic ulcer or cancer, or even a risk for falls.” In other words, many people with AFib need new treatment options.
To find out if Watchman is the right treatment for you, schedule an evaluation with Dr. Cubeddu, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/heart.

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
Varicose Veins? Might be More than Meets the Eye BY JOHN BRODIE
S
offer Vein and Vascular, a division of the Soffer Health Institute, specializes in treatment for varicose and spider veins. Dr Ariel Soffer is a Nationally Recognized Vein Expert and board certified Cardiovascular Specialist. If you experience restless legs, numbness, tingling, cramping, burning, swelling or an achy feeling in your legs the Soffer vein experts can help. It is quite common for these symptoms to develop as men and women age. Besides the discomfort it can make you want to hide your legs as spider veins and varicose veins become very visible. Lymphdema (a condition that occurs when the network of vessels, veins and arteries that circulate fluids through is not functioning properly) will cause swelling and damage to the skin. Fortunately these conditions are all
treatable. For many years people have had to go to Soffer’s facility in Miami for treatment but Soffer Vein and Vascular now has a locationsin Deerfield Beach, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Aventura, North Miami Beach and Hialeah/Miami Lakes. Dr. Soffer is a clear leader in his field. For several years he was featured in the ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion.” Adam Kustin, a company spokesperson commented, “In this field, he is as good as it gets, yet the man is so kind, so warm and so approachable, it has spawned the growth of this practice. You want the best,” said Kustin. “Two people can walk in with the same bulging vein issue, but there’s no way to tell if either has any real underlying health issues. It’s more than just cosmetic.” This is why it is so important to see someone with the appropriate expertise and not someone merely offering a cosmetic fix. “Sometimes people aren’t bothered by the bulging vein but they experience achy, very tired legs, numbness or restless legs and they never associate these “symptoms” with varicose veins. That’s why seeing a doctor as qualified as Dr. Soffer and his staff becomes so vital.” Treatment is usually simple. “And painfree,” Adam added. “Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. The new lasers are very low risk, super accurate and extremely effective. We can also inject saline. It depends on the severity.” Adam continued stating that Dr. Soffer “wants to help people prevent these life-threatening issues BEFORE they take a toll. Before they compromise how a patient lives life. He SEES people pain free,
enjoying life again who didn’t even know it was possible for them. They never connected the dots, he does.” If you are experiencing any pain or swelling in your legs or want to get back more youthful looking beautiful legs, Soffer’s signature minimally invasive vein treatments are a great solution. Soffer Vein and Vascular with six locations will provide a Complimentary vein screening available by appointment only for new patients 18 and older. Patients can discuss their concerns with the Soffer medical staff and review their best options for treatment. There is no obligation to pursue treatment. Most insurances are accepted. Dr. Soffer plans to open a Weston location next. Members of his staff speak Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese.

Ann Storck Center: Serving the Community For More Than 65 Years BY HELEN PENLAND
M
ore than 65 years ago, a retired pediatric nurse from Connecticut, Ann Storck, moved to South Florida and opened her home to a few “disregarded” children with disabilities. Four years later, she established a long-term, permanent residence where she cared for 55 children called the Pediatric Care Center until she re-retired. The center developed into the Ann Storck Center, Inc. appropriately named because of her commitment to Broward County’s developmentally challenged children. Today, their Mission Statement speaks to the dedication of the facility and its employees: “Ann Storck Center is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities.” They offer multiple programs for people from the age of three months through adulthood. Among the programs are the Early Intervention Preschool, Adult Day Training program, Residential Services, Hi-Ability Therapy Program, and the Expressive Arts program which includes music and art therapy. They also provide Transportation Services as needed. Their days end at 2:30 each day, but they also offer an after-care program so parents are able to work.
Classes include people with autism and those that have more extensive medical complications, behavioral and speech therapists, and nurses. The student/teacher/nursing ratio is very low, depending on the type of class. The Adult Day Training program teaches basic skills, occupational and speech therapy, and socialization. Music and art therapy are included for all ages. The center provides comprehensive care for every person at their facilities. Mealtime is a very detailed process. The nutritional director keeps specific, detailed information regarding every patient’s requirements including allergies, likes/dislikes, types of utensils needed, whether they need to be tubefed, and more. Funding comes from a variety of sources, but according to Charlotte Mather-Taylor, CEO, “About 80% of our funding comes from the state. We rely on Medicare and Medicaid to care for many. Children ages three-five are referred by the School Board and funded by them as well.” Presently, the main campus in Fort Lauderdale has four residential facilities housing 48 people on-site and several others throughout Broward County. At some homes, the residents require intermediate care.
Other funding comes from foundations, private donors, and local sources. The Fritch and Salah Foundations are significant donors that allows them to provide scholarships for children with special needs under three, get special equipment, and provide funds for teachers to buy supplies needed for their classrooms. Local organizations and individuals donate toys for children around Christmas time and Thanksgiving baskets. It helps families bridge the gap during the holidays. The Katz Foundation and the Children’s Opportunity Group donate funds to buy necessary curriculum equipment yearly. For more information on the Ann Storck Center, go to http://www. annstorckcenter.org/.

It’s Time for “Yappy Hour” – Dogs, Beaches, and Brews BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he quote and song lyrics made famous by legendary singers Jimmy Buffet and Alan Jackson, “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!” takes on a bit of a twist once a month on Ft. Lauderdale Beach. Dog owners and dog lovers are invited on the last Friday of each month to “Dogs, Beaches and Brews”. Those interested are asked to gather and meet on the beach about 1,400 feet north of Sunrise Boulevard and A1A at 5:00pm. This particular area of the beach becomes “Canine Beach” on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays from 3:00pm-9:00pm. Pups get to play and socialize in the sand while their owners get to mingle with other like-minded canine enthusiasts. After enjoying time on the beach, all two and four-legged friends are encouraged to walk over to the World-Famous Parrot Lounge, located at 911 Sunrise Lane, for a Doggie Happy Hour until 10:00pm. However, it’s not all about canines and
cocktails, it’s about fundraising too! Each month donations are made to dog rescue groups and dog adoption organizations. Everglades Angels Dog Rescue, a dog rescue group that finds abandoned and neglected dogs in the Everglades and brings them back to good health for adoption, was the very first to be involved. For every $5 donation, the Parrot offers a free drink to the attendee who donates. All local dog rescue groups are invited to bring their dogs to showcase for adoption. There are plenty of food and drink specials, live entertainment, raffles, and door prizes as well as adoptable dogs on display. A professional photographer is also on-site to take photos of owners with their furry-faced loved one. “Five years ago, I had the idea to give dog owners the rare opportunity to expose their dogs to the beach and then offer them the opportunity to socialize with other dog lovers after playing,” said John Haley, event organizer. “There is something
about the beach that brings out a new personality in the dogs. All dogs love the beach!” Please note that the City is now enforcing the dog permit requirements at the beach. Annual and weekend dog permits can be purchased at the City Parks and Recreation office at Holiday Park, 1150 G. Harold Martin Drive, Ft. Lauderdale Monday-Friday 8:00am5:00pm. But, a $7 weekend pass can be purchased at a beach meter. The Dogs, Beaches, and Brews will be held this month on May 25th. For updated information and more dog -friendly places please visit: http://www.fortlauderdale.gov/departments/ parks-recreation/dog-friendly-places.

FEATURE STORY
Audi Fort Lauderdale Introduces Audi X A Premium Car Buying Experience
F
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
or over seven decades, the family-owned Qvale Automotive Group, has been known for their outstanding reputation in the car industry. The distinguished family and their entire team is committed to providing value, quality, and excellence in sales and service at all their dealerships including Audi Fort Lauderdale. The dealership features a stunning showroom and state-of-the-art service facility. Audi Fort Lauderdale is located on Federal Highway making it convenient to service Audi customers in the Southeast Florida region. The award-winning dealer’s primary focus is understanding their customers’ needs and finding the right vehicle that meets those needs. The goal is to give each and every one of their guests a simple, stressfree, and transparent buying experience. Hence, Audi X was created with this objective in mind. Audi X is a premium experience that elevates the carpurchasing process to reflect the qualities of Audi’s luxury brand. Throughout the many years of selling cars in South Florida, they have learned much about what customers want-and more importantly, don’t want-from the car-buying experi-
ence. Therefore, they are taking the opportunity to improve the process for consumers by eliminating what they find to be the most frustrating part of the experience which are negotiations. Bret Macy, Executive Manager at Audi Fort Lauderdale, recently took some time to answer some questions about Audi X and the car buying experience at his dealership Please tell us more about the Audi X experience. We are super excited about the new program. Car buyers choose an Audi they like by shopping online or at the dealership. The sales price is clearly marked making the purchase and the process completely transparent. We have the most fair and competitive pricing possible. We also assign our guests with a dedicated representative who will guide them each step of the way. What can your guests expect from these dedicated representatives? We want all our guests at Audi Fort Lauderdale to feel confident and comfortable and have the most positive car buying experience with no hassles, no complications, no long waiting, and basically, no stress. Our representatives will first determine the needs, then check inventory and options. They will then take the guest on a test drive, answer all questions, give an overview of the service department, explain finance options, deliver the vehicle, and of course, follow up. By having a single point of contact, it allows for a seamless purchasing experience. How does Audi X make pricing easier? We want to eliminate the “old school” car shopping stereotype. No one
wants to spend their time haggling and negotiating with a sales person. It is extremely frustrating and irritating, so we disclose all fees and charges up front, with no surprises. This clear, transparent pricing allows our guests to spend their time and energy on more important things such as finding the perfect car. How do those looking to purchase a car know they are receiving the very best price? Audi Fort Lauderdale is revolutionizing the car purchasing experience by offering negotiation-free pricing. Our market-value prices are available for every new and pre-owned vehicle, plus services and accessories. To be sure our guests are getting the most fair and competitive price possible, we are continually tracking trends, local prices and market values, and adjusting accordingly. This up-front, fair pricing approach is streamlined and efficient, and more reflective of the luxury brand those have
come to expect from Audi. Getting the best price should be effortlessand now it is. What else would you like readers to know about Audi Fort Lauderdale? Buying a new car is a big deal, and we want our buyers to feel confident about their purchase. All purchases at Audi Fort Lauderdale are backed by our 24-Hour Money Back Guarantee*. Our policy is simple, if you are not satisfied, return the undamaged vehicle within 24 hours/200 miles and we will refund your money. On pre-owned vehicles, we offer a 3 day/300-mile exchange policy on the undamaged vehicle. Simply stated, “You Can’t Buy The Wrong Car”. We want your car to be a perfect fit, and if you’re not happy, we’re not happy. Period. n Audi Fort Lauderdale is located at 1200 North Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale, 33304. I Wanna Rock! – Rockfest Concerts Breathes Life into the Miramar Amphitheater with Multi-Year Concert Series BY TERRY JAILLET
R
ockfest Concerts, the renowned promoter of the Rockfest 80s Music Festivals, has signed an exclusive agreement to promote events at the Miramar Amphitheater. Led by music veteran Roy Anthony, Rockfest Concerts has been putting on shows throughout South Florida for over a decade. The group is best known for its retro 80s events featuring legendary rockers like Dokken, 38 Special and Joan Jett. The new concert series, however, isn’t just for head bangers. In fact, the first three events will
feature Latin music and Hip-Hop. “We are so excited to tap into the diversity of South Florida,” said Anthony, “We want to put on shows for all types of people and music.” All the events will be held at the Miramar Amphitheater at Miramar Regional Park. The venue, which has 3,000 covered seats and room for 2,000 more on the lawn, is a perfect fit for the types of events Rockfest envisions. Concertgoers will get the benefits they’ve come to expect at major venues, like VIP sections and multiple food and beverage options, while also enjoying a much more intimate concert experience. The first two events planned are the Festival Cinco de Mayo on May 5th and the Godfather’s of Hip Hop on May 18th. Festival Cinco de Mayo The First concert in the series will celebrate Mexican Independence Day with music from all over Latin America. The headliner is Mexican Grammynominated artist Paquita La Del Barrio. Known for giving it to “Macho” men in the crowd while belting out regional favorites, Barrio is a true entertainer. Paquita will be joined by sexy Columbian salsa and tropical diva Catalina La O as well as special guest KerreKe.
The Godfathers of Hip-Hop The second event hosted by Rockfest will be The Godfathers of Hip Hop, featuring many of the names who put Hip-Hop on the map. Doug E. Fresh and Naughty by Nature top the line up of 80s and 90s superstars. The crowd is sure to get down to Doug E Fresh’s The Show or Naughty by Nature’s party anthems O.P.P and Hip-Hop Hooray. But, the real treat of the night will be the when Eric B. and Rakim unite for the first time in 20 years. The duo’s seminal track, Paid in Full, is considered by many music critics as one of the top hip-hop songs ever produced. To hear it live for the first time in two decades is sure to be a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity. Rockfest is already promoting several more events at the Amphitheater this summer with many more in the works. Mark your calendar for the Latin Spring Festival on June 15th, Loudwire’s GenX Summer on July 3rd and the annual two-day Rockfest 80’s event scheduled for November 10th and 11th. Rockfest Concerts’ goal is to inject a diverse music scene into the region. It hopes to put on as many as 20 or 25 concerts a year. n To purchase tickets to upcoming events or learn more about Rockfest Concerts visit www.rockfestconcerts.com. Tickets to upcoming events are available at Ticketmaster.

very woman dreams of long and luscious locks that form the crowning glory of her appearance and that dream can easily be a reality after understanding the process of hair growth. Hair production follows a specific growth cycle with three distinct and concurrent phases: anagen (growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). Hair follicles or “the hair’s factory” contain the main blood and protein supplies for hair growth. Typically, an average person’s hair follicles range from 90,000 to 150,000. With this range, an average person’s hair growth amounts to about 0.5 inches or 6 inches per year. These are the top 5 tips to grow healthy, longer, and possibly faster hair. However, keep in mind that important genetic and personal life style factors greatly with each cycle. ▸▸ It’s all about the base - The hair follicle builds a solid factory with high quality supplies, blood and protein. That means a healthy body with a healthy diet. If the body does not have enough supplies from a healthy lifestyle, then the body will lower the supply of blood to the follicle. This will weaken the hair and it will fall off more easily. Once the basic building block of hair structure is understood, the next steps are easy to follow. ▸▸ You are what you eat -This may sound excessive and redundant, but the food eaten applies immensely to hair growth. Protein, vitamin A, biotin and vitamin B complex are the main supplies for hair growth. Foods such as, nuts, dairy products, salmon, sardines, avocado, cauliflower, and broccoli and eggs (the yolk has one of the highest concentrations of biotin) are great for growth. ▸▸ Taking care of business - Your daily routine must be executed correctly and thoroughly. Make sure to clean and rinse off all the soap and conditioner from your scalp well. Brush your hair every night before you go to bed and invest in a good brush, it makes a difference. Also, brushing your hair will distribute out your own natural oils that stimulate hair growth. ▸▸ Invest in supplements - Taking biotin supplements with natural ingredients such as Viviscal or SugarBearHair gummies are popular and easy to find at any market. The most important part of this tip is to be consistent and patient. ▸▸ Say NO to high heat tools - High heat tools stunts hair growth and kills off the ends. Find ways to minimize the usage of high heat tools. When using flat irons or curling irons, make sure to keep the settings under 395 degrees, if not, the hair will melt and burn. To visually understand about this, think about the yellow iron marks on a white shirt after using a hot iron. Advice such as this is common knowledge, but what makes hair grow is understanding and applying them in your daily routine which result in longer, healthier and beautiful hair. Harrison enjoyed a bit of a holiday in Europe for spring break. Although he was visiting the “City of Love” without his love, he filled his time in Paris, France engaging in art, cuisine, and culture. Of course, on his “must-see” list was the Eiffel Tower. He said, “Oui s’il vous plaît!“ when asked to snap a souvenir photo with Our City Fort Lauderdale in front of the architectural wonder.
