Happy Holidays

T

he holiday season is upon us, and while the holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, the one thing we all share is the spirit of community.

It was just a few months ago that we witnessed neighbors helping neighbors as we banded together to prepare for Hurricane Irma. And in the aftermath of that storm, strangers became friends and a renewed sense of community was born. In the spirit of the holiday season, let’s rekindle those bonds as we open our homes and hearts. Share your holiday traditions with a family of another faith. Teach your children the true meaning of giving, by donating to a worthy charity or volunteering at a community food bank. And as the new year approaches, take a moment to count your blessings and resolve to become a more active member of your community. The perfect place to start is right here in the pages of this Our City magazine. Each and every issue is packed with stories on all the wonderful activities and programs taking place in your community, along with articles on the amazing accomplishments of your neighbors, young and old. Wishing you and yours a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year! Sincerely,

Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

in creating local and international large-scale chalk murals and directs public art collaborations in communities to awaken creative growth in young artists. The local arts agency along with the libraries will host the event to coincide with the “National Endowment for the Arts’ (NEA) Big Read” in partnership with Arts Midwest. The initiative wants to showcase a diverse range of contemporary titles which reflect many different voices and perspectives to inspire conversation and discovery. Studies have shown that reading reduces stress, heightens empathy, improves students’ test scores, slows the onset of dementia, and makes more active and aware citizens. For over a decade the NEA has funded more than 1,400 Big Read programs, providing more than $19 million in grants to organizations nationwide. The community-wide reading project will feature the book, “In the Time of the Butterflies” by award-winning author Julia Alvarez. FEATURE STORY

Dr. Alan Mendelsohn Has Been a Pioneer in Cataract Surgery for 30 Years

W

BY ALAN D. MENDELSOHN, MD, FACS

hen I completed my fellowship training at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 1987 and began practicing ophthalmology in Hollywood July 1987, I was part of a new wave of ophthalmologists who brought the exciting technique of out-patient cataract surgery to Broward County. Our predecessors would admit patients to the hospital the night prior to surgery and keep them hospitalized for an additional night following surgery. Avoiding the hassles and expenses of hospitalization was attractive, but even more advantageous was avoiding the risks of hospital –induced infections. Out-patient cataract surgery became an almost instant success.

Outpatient Cateract Surgery For the next decade, those of us on the “cutting edge” of cataract surgery in Hollywood were doing cataract surgery by a procedure called Extracapsular Cataract Extraction whereby we removed the nucleus of the cataract in its entirety. This necessitated that we make a large incision in the eye. The cataract was removed, followed by insertion of an intraocular lens (IOL). At the completion of surgery, five to seven sutures were required to close and secure the surgical incision. The eye was pressure patched. For the next three weeks, we encouraged our post cataract surgery patients with the following refrain: “Do not bend, do not lift, do not exercise, do not exert.” Finally, after three weeks our patients could become “free agents” again and resumed their normal lives. We began suture removal in the office, and by the sixth post-operative week

the patient received a final new eyeglass prescription. The IOLs utilized in that era provided fairly good distance vision, but eyeglasses were needed to see near and intermediate distances, with fine tuning of distance vision.

“No Stich” Cateract Surgery While moving cataract surgery to an out-patient basis was considered revolutionary at the time, an even bigger milestone transpired with the transformation of cataract surgery in the mid to late 1990’s to a highly improved technology called Phacoemulcification (phaco). Instead of removing the cataract nucleus in its entirety, with a high-tech ultrasound we could break up the nucleus into tiny fragments and suck them out. This paved the way to tiny incisions in the eye and the advent of “no stitch” cataract surgery. Phaco brought quicker, safer, and better visual outcomes to the cataract surgery arena. With great pleasure, on the very first post-operative day, I was now able to encouragingly tell my patients, “You can now bend, lift, exercise and resume 100% of your activities!” Even more importantly, post-operative edema, infections, and inflammations plummeted with the new technology. Cataract surgeries were now routinely scheduled two weeks apart instead of two months apart. Concurrently, there have been remarkable enhancements in the instruments that we utilize pre-operatively in the office to ascertain the optimal custom fit intraocular lens for any given patient. The quality of these high tech ophthalmic devices and ultrasounds utilized pre-operatively for Iens determinations, as well as the expertise

of the staff actually making the measurements, are of paramount importance for excellent visual outcomes.

30th Anniversary From the onset of my career in 1987, through to the present time, we have been blessed with newer generations of intraocular lenses (IOLs) which provide superior vision. Another career milestone occurred within the past ten years with the arrival of the multifocal ReStor IOL. With the ReStor IOL, we can generally correct most patients’ cataracts and enable them to see near, far, and everywhere in between without the aid of glasses or contact lenses. The ability to read, drive, work on the computer, and see without glasses is an incredible freedom that was never possible with traditional monofocal lenses. My journey in the world of cataract surgery in Hollywood has now hit three decades as I had my 30-year anniversary of practicing ophthalmology on July 1st! Perhaps the most incredible landmark and noteworthy step on this journey has been the landmark transformation in cataract surgery to the new era of laser-assisted cataract surgery that has commenced in earnest in the past five years. Femtosecond laser cataract surgery is highly reproducible, far more accurate, and far safer than older techniques of cataract surgery with a scalpel. The laser offers excellent precision thereby producing the absolute best visual outcomes in current cataract surgery. Furthermore, patients with low or moderate levels of astigmatism can have this astigmatism eliminated or greatly reduced at the same time as the cataract procedure, resulting in a markedly enhanced quality of vision and overall outcome. In essence, this is customized laser cataract surgery utilizing high-tech 3D imaging and tailoring the ultra-precise treatment to the unique size and shape of your eye.

My Own Cataract Surgery On a personal note, even though I am a cataract surgeon, naturally I am not exempt from developing cataracts myself. In fact, in 2014, at age 56, I began to notice the litany of complaints that I have heard from my patients. First, I noticed that while driving at night, I was not as comfortable or confident as I was driving during the day. Second, oncoming headlights became

Dr. Alan D. Mendelsohn

bothersome, and eventually so did the rising or setting sunlight in my face while driving. Third, I had always been an avid reader, able to read small print journals or novels for hours at a time prior to the inception of my cataracts. But in 2013 and 2014, I noted that reading tiny print became more of a chore and challenge, curtailing my reading duration. Finally, and most importantly by far, I needed to be positive that my vision was excellent to examine my patients and perform surgical procedures. I decided that it was time to proceed. In July 2014, I was the personal beneficiary of the wonderful transformations of modern ophthalmology that I described. I had advanced laser cataract surgery with the insertion of an ReStor lens in my right eye, with the same procedures to my left eye the following week. My vision is now phenomenal! I wore eyeglasses starting at six years of age and then began with contact lenses around age 13. Until age 56, I needed glasses or contact lenses for everything! Now, for the past three years, I wear no glasses, no contact lenses, nothing. Of course, I practice what I preach and always wear sunglasses with UV400 blocker and polarization outdoors during daylight hours for ocular protection. My quality of vision and depth perception are the absolute best of my entire adult life. I am delighted! Now at age 59 and feeling like the bionic man, I look forward to my next decade serving the community as an ophthalmologist on this thoroughly enlightening journey!

ew Year’s Eve is a time for celebration and there is no bigger celebration in South Florida than the Fort Lauderdale Orange Bowl Downtown Countdown. Revelers will gather in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, December 31st to usher in the new year, complete with a countdown and lighted anchor drop at midnight. The City of Fort Lauderdale and Orange Bowl have partnered together since 2010 to host the annual Fort Lauderdale Orange Bowl Downtown Countdown, the premier New Year’s Eve celebration in South Florida. Touted as one of the largest New Year’s Eve celebrations in the state, the free street festival is full of fun and excitement for both children and adults. The entire event is family-friendly, with special children’s activities beginning at 3:30pm. There will be bounce houses and inflatables, games, face painting, contests and dancing with the DJ. At 7pm, little ones will enjoy a special kids’ countdown and the lighting of the giant anchor.

The celebration continues at 8pm when the live music starts as Orquesta Calle Sol takes the main stage. This classic salsa dance band presents an energetic tribute to the “Golden Years” of salsa: the 70’s and 80’s. The Shane Duncan All Access Band is the evening’s headliner. Their performance begins at 9:30pm. With a song repertoire covering everything from Top 40 to Oldies and Country to Disco, they will keep the party going until 1am. The highlight of the Downtown Countdown is the larger-thanlife illuminated anchor drop. Event organizers promise plenty of fun surprises when everyone joins in the countdown to midnight which welcomes 2018. Modern Sixties Owners Continue Hurricane Relief Efforts for Puerto Rico BY HELEN PENLAND

T

he endeavor carries on. Chad Thilborger and Frank Ruppen, owners of Modern Sixties Wine Lounge in Fort Lauderdale, are continuing to raise funds for hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico. They are partnering directly with their friend Ryan Fitzmorris in New Orleans, who is handling the logistics for the trip to Puerto Rico, which is still in dire need. Modern Sixties held another fundraising event at the wine lounge on Friday, October 28th for the cause. They began selling tickets for a raffle to win a Nordic cruise in early October. Of the 400 tickets originally available, there are approximately 100 remaining. When all tickets are sold, they will hold the drawing

for the one lucky winner. The undertaking for relief effort has turned into a massive project. To date, they have collected over 55,000 pounds of donations, and received an additional 30,000 pounds of Coca Cola products November 3rd. Many more are pouring in. They received thousands of contributions including the standard life-saving and necessary items such as water, non-perishable food, and tools. In addition to the donations, the group shipped their own transportation, portable housing, a portable kitchen, and fresh food to cook. They will be entirely self-sustaining and self-contained. According to Mr. Fitzmorris, “Refrigerated truck were packed and headed for Jacksonville, then Puerto Rico. Two more containers remain to be filled.” The team of 22 departs on November 10th, flying into San Juan. Chad said, “Because most of assistance is in San Juan, we’ll be based in City Square in Ponce, at the south-central

coast of the island. Working with about a dozen volunteer locals on the ground in Puerto Rico, we will spend two days in the mountainous areas surrounding the town.” More than 70% of the island still has no power. Therefore, it’s important for Chad, Frank, Ryan, and remaining volunteers to be there. The plan is to cook 7-8,000 meals per day. Chad, along with Johnny Steen (also a chef) will cook consistently. Because of the needs, other volunteers may cook as well. Ryan sends a special thanks to AAA Cooper as one of their newest sponsors. Another large corporate sponsor includes Harley Davidson who provided supplies and large semis for transportation. Superintendent Runcie Reads to Rock Island Students BY DEBBY TEICH

R

ock Island Elementary School and Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert W. Runcie recently joined the nationwide effort to break the world record for people reading the same book on the same day. They participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, which celebrates literacy and promotes early childhood education. The program sends a powerful message to children about the importance of reading and helps them get them excited about books and learning. On October 19, students from the school’s pre-K and kindergarten classes gathered around Runcie as he read this year’s official book, “Quackers” by Liz Wong. They were united with millions of children and adults throughout the nation who were also reading the children’s story about standing out, fitting in, and building a life with room for all. Last year, over 2.3 million adults and children participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record. “I had a great time reading with children at Rock Island Elementary School for the annual Read for the Record event, which supports our District’s strategic focus on early childhood education and literacy,” said Runcie. “As Superintendent, being able to spend time having fun with students while helping to instill a

love of reading is one of the best parts of the job. It gives meaning and purpose to our work, and keeps us focused and centered on our District’s goal of ensuring all students have the best educational experiences possible to prepare them for their futures.” This has been a Districtwide event for the past four years, including participation by all BCPS elementary schools and early childhood programs, as well as other early childhood programs and schools throughout the community. There were approximately 1,000 guest readers visiting District schools and child care centers across Broward County. Guest readers included Broward County School Board members, the Broward County Commission, local municipalities, local law enforcement, the judicial system, the Florida Panthers, community organizations, local media, area businesses, parents, families and more. “The annual Jumpstart Read for the Record event supports our District’s efforts to raise awareness about connecting children with books and positive literacy role models to create and support a strong foundation for reading and overall literacy development,” said Dr. Lori Canning, Executive Director,

Early Learning Language. “It is one example of how we, as a county, can unite to create a positive impact on all children in our community.” In addition, through a partnership between BCPS, the Children’s Services Council, and multiple Broward County early childhood stakeholders, a free copy of “Quackers” was provided to each pre-kindergarten and kindergarten child in Broward County. That’s 40,000 books for 40,000 children!

Croissant Park Elementary School Teacher Wins Contest for Math Bags BY DEBBY TEICH

S

tudents in Lauren Mianowski’s first grade class at Croissant Park Elementary School in Ft. Lauderdale now have more tools to practice their math skills at home. It is all thanks to Science Everywhere, a nationwide challenge by Overdeck Family Foundation and the Simons Foundation’s Science Sandbox initiative in partnership with DonorsChoose.org to bring math and science beyond school walls. Teachers in all 50 states created and implemented outside-class math and science projects that others can replicate to inspire students and parents to think about these subjects in new ways. Mianowski was selected as one of five runners-up for her project “Marvelous Math Take Home Bags.” She was awarded $1,000 to help fund her project. “Young learners learn best through repeated hands-on practice in comfortable environments,” said Mianowski. “The supplies are all hands-on to make learning fun and involve the families of my students.” The “Take Home Bags” are sent home with students who need to practice various math skills. Each “bag”

includes math games and manipulatives for different math concepts and skills. For example, the base 10 kits allow students to practice place value by building numbers and exploring the 10’s place. Magnetic coins allow children to practice making various amounts

using different coin options. Folder games are a quick and easy way to re-enforce skills that cover different standards. “Each material covers different standards in different ways appealing to various learning modalities and demonstrating new applications and real word situations for using math skills,” said Mianowski. “By using games that teach math and fun colorful manipulatives, the students are less anxious and more engaged, therefore skills are more readily learned and mastered. Parents will get to see the children’s minds at work and provide support. When school and home connect, learning soars higher!” Mianowski says this is particularly important for her students. They are also largely English second language learners and many have special needs. They often take breaks to move their bodies and help regain focus, which takes away time from in class learning. Many do not have access to any technology when they leave school. The take-home math bags allow hands-on learning to continue at home. “My biggest hope is that it shows my students that learning can be fun and helps families foster a positive view of school and education,” said Mianowski.

Floranada Elementary School Earns Five Star School Recognition BY STACEY BOMSER

F

loranada Elementary School has been honored for having exemplary community involvement. It was one of 25 Broward County Public Schools to earn the Five Star School Award for the 2016-2017 school year from the Florida Department of Education. Statewide, nearly 700 schools earned the recognition. The Five Star School Award is presented to schools that are committed to incorporating family and community members into the school environment to enhance student learning. “Our school has seen great parent and community involvement. We have had parents help in the media center, the classrooms, the diversity play, and at the Floranada Olympics and many other events,” shares Principal John Vetter, noting the school also takes pride in its business partnerships. “Our kids have been to the local karate studio, the dog training facilities, grocery stores, and even to the retirement communities to help us stay connected with our neighborhood.” Principal Vetter says it’s an honor to earn the Five Star School recognition and he credits the incredible support shown to the school by families and the community. The school’s active PTA makes events such as the annual Floranada Day, which attracts more than 1,000 people, a possibility, along with programs such as Trunk-or-Treat, holiday canned food drive, Santa breakfast, Science

Night, and much more. He is particularly proud of the Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) program, in which 23 fathers volunteer in the classrooms. Floranada Elementary won recognition from the national PTA for that program. Principal Vetter also received the Florida Outstanding Principal of the Year Award from the Florida PTA. The school also enjoys a close relationship with local law enforcement agencies. Fire Station 35 visits the kindergarten classes each year to teach fire prevention skills, and members of the Fort Lauderdale Police K-9 units visit with third graders. Other interesting programs include the Drum Café, which builds self-confidence and character through music. In addition to being named a Five Star School award winner, Floranada Elementary earned the Golden School award for recording more than 3000 hours of volunteer service.

Guido and Etika Parente visited their ancestors’ country of Italy this past summer. They started their journey in Benevento, and then made their way to Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, and Como. Their visit had many stops at iconic destinations including the Colosseum. Not only did they bring their grandson Guido Alexander on the trip for his graduation gift, they also brought Our City Magazine to always have a little piece of home with them.
