t’s another New Year, and for Our City Media that means a new beginning. New Year’s Day marked the start of the new year. It also served as a point in time when many of us started changes in our lives. Our City Media was no exception. We have upgraded the look, feel and layout of our magazines for 2018. We’ve made every change with you, our reader, in mind. The Tradition Continues…Hollywood Celebrates Veterans with Free BBQ BY BEVERLY PERKINS
B
esides Thanksgiving, November recognizes another day to be thankful for, and that’s Veterans Day! The City of Hollywood, along with Mayor Josh Levy and all the City of Hollywood Commissioners, showed how thankful they are to the men and women who are currently serving or have served in the United States Armed Forces. They saluted, celebrated, and honored these amazing citizens by hosting the “7th Annual Veterans Barbeque”. The free event was held on the national holiday at TY Park. Besides serving up great food and camaraderie, the City of Hollywood Veterans Barbeque also featured a wall of honor where veterans and their families were able to display photos of local service heroes, and a banner plane flying above with a message of gratitude. Peter Bober, Hollywood’s former mayor, started the annual tradition in 2011 when he set forth to make plans to honor United States service members. Later that year, the City of Hollywood hosted the first Veterans Barbeque. Mayor Bober rolled up his sleeves and worked the grill while other members of the Hollywood City Commission joined with volunteers to serve a free

barbeque lunch to local veterans, service members and their families. Seven years later, the tradition continues and all Hollywood military personnel, veterans and their families were invited to the special event to celebrate their service. Bleu Flame Catering served traditional BBQ fare featuring barbeque chicken, hamburgers, baked beans, coleslaw, corn, cookies and brownies, as well as an assortment of beverages. “For the City of Hollywood to do this barbecue and recognize our veterans and the service they have pro-
vided for us means everything in the world to me and I wouldn’t miss it,” said attendee Anita Shultz. The well-received event was sponsored by Sintavia, Diplomat Beach Resort, chewy.com, Witkin-Hults Design Group, and Majestic Memory Care Center. Attendees were able to win prizes courtesy of the generous sponsors including a dinner for four at The Diplomat Beach Resort’s Bristol’s Burgers and a dog and cat prize pack courtesy of chewy.com. “I am so very proud of the veterans and active duty military personnel we have here in Hollywood,” said Mayor Josh Levy. “Their unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom is truly awe inspiring. This annual barbecue is a great way to bring everyone together under one roof, so we may honor them and tell them thank you for their service and sacrifice.”

2nd Annual King Tide Event Brought Awareness to Sea Level Rise BY BEVERLY PERKINS
O
ver 100 members of the community came together a couple of months ago to witness the 2nd Annual King Tide Flooding Event. The event commenced at the corner of Adams Street and 10th Avenue in East Hollywood. Those that participated were able to watch the annual King Tides push water over Hollywood’s sea walls which then spilled over to the low-lying residential streets. “Witnessing the King Tide is like a window into the future of sea level rise in Florida, when we will experience frequent flooding events and the disruption of
14 JANUARY 2018 | OURCITYHOLLYWOOD.COM
neighborhoods and businesses in the path of rising waters,” noted Scott Lewis, a founding member of the Sea Level Rise Project. Sea Level Rise (SLR) is a serious issue in Southeast Florida and will have a significant impact on homes, communities and businesses in the near future. Numerous local governments and universities are putting forth efforts to prepare a plan for the impact of the rising seas. In addition, there is work by nonprofit, faith and informal groups also addressing the problem. The King Tide event was coordinated again by the SLR Solutions Project of South Florida. The organization, started by members of Temple Solel in Hollywood, wants to serve as a clearinghouse and community leader on the Sea Level Rise Issue in order to support the work of government, businesses, and other groups in Southeast Florida to mitigate Climate Change and make our communities more resilient to Sea Level Rise. Despite all the efforts and national
media spotlights, the public in Southeast Florida may not perceive the threat of SLR to be immediate. They may also not be aware of actions they can currently take to assist in regional efforts to build resilience, and to democratize flood risk management. Keren Bolter, an environmental science professor from Broward College, students, and members of the SLR Solution Project of South Florida were able to be citizen scientists as they documented the flooding by measuring the salinity and depth, and photographing the waters to incorporate into Broward County’s database. Both Hollywood’s current Mayor, Josh Levy, and former Mayor, Peter Bober were in attendance to help create awareness to the urgent issue. “When you watch water, literally, creeping down streets, and overtaking them within mere minutes, you begin to see that sea level rise is greatest threat facing South Florida’s future,” commented former Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober. For more information on how to become involved in the Sea Level Rise Solutions Project of South Florida, please contact Scott Lewis at 954-801-7170 or email Scotlewg@gmail.com.

A Bird’s Eye View – The Flocking of the Flamingos he Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Hollywood Women’s Club proved once again that birds of a feather flock together as they debuted their famous pink flamingos all over Downtown Hollywood for the holidays. nization added an additional 100 flamingos to their flock which brought their festive colony to over 300. The club lined them up in assembly line fashion and tied red glitter bows around the pink plastic birds to get them ready for display. The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) joined in again on the flocking fundraiser festivities by sponsoring a mass flocking on
projects which transform lives in the Hollywood community as well as the ongoing restoration of their 1927 National Historic Clubhouse. In addition to celebrating the holiday, the club is celebrating their 95th anniversary. The festivities began in November when the orga-

During the month, decorated flamingos were also displayed in the window at Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub & Restaurant on Hollywood Blvd. Patrons were invited to take selfies and group photos, post on social media, and then vote for their favorite one. The winning bird was announced at the end of the month. Anyone interested in flocking friends, family and businesses was able to call the flocking hotline to place their request and make a small donation of $35 or more. The birds were delivered in the early morning hours and stayed in place until the evening when volunteers would go back to collect them. “It puts a smile on everyone’s face” said Carol Fitzgerald, President of the Hollywood Women’s Club. “Over the last 4 years the Holiday Flocking Promotion has raised close to $5000 to support community service projects.” The fundraiser not only raises money each year, but helps recruit new members and gives Hollywood’s oldest organization great exposure. The clubhouse is available for private events such as bridal showers, weddings, and other parties. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital “American Icon Award” is given to those that represent the highest values for Joe DiMaggio stood. Jeter will join NBA legends Pat Riley, President of the Miami Heat and Earvin “Magic” Johnson, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and the Grammy Awardwinning couple Emilio and Gloria Estefan as an honoree that upholds and has the societal impact of the award’s namesake. Both Joe DiMaggio and Derek Jeter spent their entire playing careers with the New York Yankees, winning numerous championships, individual awards, and becoming synonymous with the most iconic team in American sports. And while their on-field accomplishments of are many, it’s the way they carried themselves away from the diamond – with style, class, and dignity – that continues to link them to this day.

Now, the baseball legends will have another point of commonality, as the children’s hospital foundation that bears the Yankee Clipper’s name presents Jeter the prestigious award at a gala banquet honoring him on January 25th at the Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood at 6:30pm. The incredible event benefits thousands of children and families with life-saving care provided every day at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “Derek capably carried on Joe’s legacy while wearing the Yankee pinstripes and has continued to be an impact player in retirement,” said Kevin Janser, who leads the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation for Memorial Healthcare System. “His dedication to children through the Turn 2 Foundation makes him a true American icon and ideal recipient of this award.” Jeter’s foundation has awarded more than $27 million in grants to create and support programs that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and “turn 2” healthy lifestyles. Hollywood Celebrates and Remembers Resident Artist Larry Joe Miller BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
any gathered to pay their respects and celebrate the life of Hollywood’s very own artist-in-residence, Larry Joe Miller, in midNovember at his studio and gallery at the Hollywood ArtsPark in Young Circle.
Larry Joe Miller was known as a true renaissance man and a lifelong artist in music and in the arts. Affectionately named “Mr. Rockabilly”, the stylish artist was always seen traveling around Hollywood on his scooter, teaching painting classes, and playing bass on a street corner or a ukulele on his porch. The former president of the Broward Art Guild spent 50 years as a touring musician, and even toured with the English punk rock band, The Clash. During that time, he also played with several popular groups including the Thingies, the Delusions, and his very own Larry Joe Miller and the Rockabilly Rockets. However, when his touring days were over anyone looking for Miller could almost always find him in his art studio and gallery at ArtsPark. This was where he donated countless hours of his time teaching students of all ages how to paint. He was always hosting complimentary weekly community art events such as printmaking classes and paint parties. South Florida residents loved his “Paint for Fun” nights. Before Miller was living his creative life, he served in the United States Air Force where he earned a distinguished record of overseas service. At the ceremony, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz
presented Larry’s wife, Amy, with a plaque honoring him into the United States Senate, and the Honor Guard presented his family with a flag. Friends and colleagues shared memories including Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr, and Kent Wallace, who also sang a song that him and Larry Joe wrote together. “Larry Joe’s giving personality impacted so many of our residents with his joy for life, his profound love of his family, and his passion for art and music that his presence in our community will be terribly missed, but his spirit will remain in my heart and those who knew and loved him forever,” said friend and Hollywood Historical Society President, Karen Albertson. Aside from his wife, Amy, and son, Clay, Miller is survived by three other sons: Tyler Miller, 31, John Paul Miller, 49, and Dennis Green, 54, and seven grandchildren.

This year’s theme, “Beauty Inside Out” was emphasized throughout the event held at Nikki’s on the Green in Hollywood. The South Floridian clubhouse at Orangebrook Golf & Country Club showcased vendors sharing the latest in hair, skin, make-up, fashion, nutrition, and personal development. It was a red-carpet evening as over 100 guests were greeted by Facebook Live interviewers, and paparazzi. The event was hosted by local beauty expert, Wilma Mulcare of Mulcare Skin Care/ Cosmetics. Mulcare proudly displayed and discussed how her brand achieves healthier skin and a polished look. She then demonstrated make-up and hair techniques on the models. “You don’t have a second chance to make a great first impression,” exclaimed Mulcare. “It’s never too early to develop leadership skills and a healthy self-esteem.” The anticipated fashion show was emceed and coordinated by Charlene Meriedy. he holidays can be stressful even when there isn’t the added stress of an aging parent. In addition, we often have this “idealistic” view of what Christmas, Thanksgiving and other holidays should look like based on commercials, movies, television specials, and songs. It is important to understand and accept that traditions, celebrations, and gatherings might have to change because of your loved one’s situation. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t still be enjoyable. First of all, have an open discussion with your family to explain the situation and need for change. If you are the one who hosts, then perhaps another family member can do so. That way everyone can still get together, but your focus can be on your loved one and not on everything that goes along with the day. If you are the host, then you might need to consider downsizing the numbers. Or, perhaps host a buffet and people can come by at different times throughout the day. It is key to know how much commotion your loved one is able to handle. It also might mean changing the time. A person with dementia may be more tired and frustrated later in the day. So, the family dinner may need to change from 5pm to noon. Wherever the celebration will occur, make sure there is a quiet room/area for the person in the event he/she does get overwhelmed. People can then visit in small groups versus the person being overwhelmed with a big crowd. Another important tip to surviving the holidays is to be flexible. You might have the whole day planned as to what time you will celebrate, who will provide transportation, and what time you will leave. However, an hour into the day, your loved one might indicate that he/she wants to go home. It is important to be flexible and prepared to shift gears. Some families opt to have their traditional celebration, but not include the person with dementia on that particular day. Instead, they will celebrate in a smaller way on a different day (i.e.: the day after Thanksgiving; a couple days after Christmas). Although to many this doesn’t “feel right,” it is important to understand that the person may not be aware of the specific date. In addition, it may be better for them, and the family, to have a low key celebration on a different day than a high stressed, overwhelming one on the actual day. For a person who is unable to participate on the actual day, there are still ways to include him/her. Include a recipe from the person, have everyone sign a card to bring to the person, or include a time for others to share memories of the person and the holidays. Finally, a question that I think is important to ask in regards to the holiday celebrations is, “Is this my need or is this my loved one’s need?” Often time that simple question will help point families in the right direction as to how to include the person in the celebrations. Examples of these include NetNanny, KidLogger, Pumpic and PhoneSheriff. Each has its own uniquie set of features, but the functionality of all of them is similar.
Child Engagement It will come as little surprise to anyone that there are a number of thriving chat rooms and forums filled with teens detailing ways to get
around parental control platforms. Motivated teenagers can be quite clever. An interesting example of this is my own experience with a great app called Life360. Life360 allows parents to get real-time information about their kids’ location, cell phone use and travel habits (e.g. were they speeding). My kids don’t like this app because it drains battery life. One afternoon, I was wondering where my teen son Justin was. I clicked on the Life360 app, pulled up the map, and there he was, in Pyongyang, North Korea! In reality, Justin was two blocks from home playing basketball, but he had very quickly figured out how to “spoof” his phone’s GPS; something I am quite sure I will never know how to do. Whether parents like it or not, our society is never going back to a time where young people use personal electronic devices less. The entire global culture has quickly evolved with the mobile phone at its center. Experts agree that the best way to keep kids safe online is ta combination of parental controls, mindful oversight and, most importantly, engagement with children. No one knows what teens will be doing ten years from now, but we can be sure it will include even greater use of technology than today.

Male Breast Reduction BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
T
he term comes from the Greek words “gyne” (meaning “woman”) and “mastos” (mean- ing “breast”). In practical terms, this means abnormally large breasts on men. The condition is relatively common in adolescent boys, and 90% of the time symptoms disappear in a matter of months, or as adolescence wanes a few years later. But the remaining 10% are burdened with a social handicap that can cause shame, lowered self-esteem and confidence. There are many potential causes, including puberty, steroid abuse, obesity, marijuana use, side effects of medicine, and certain genetic diseases. Gynecomastia can be emotionally devastating. A man or boy with gynecomastia struggles with anxiety over such simple acts as taking off his shirt at the beach. In cases of obesity, weight loss can alter the gynecomastic condition, but for many it may not totally eliminate it. For all other causes, surgery is the only known physical remedy, and often the best solution. Once the contour of the chest is restored to normal, the patient can begin to feel more confident and selfassured with his physical body image. Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty and reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced. Before After The procedure can be performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia depending on each individual’s medical condition. In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used. There are various liposuction techniques that may be used; the technique most appropriate in your case will be defined prior to your procedure. Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced, or the nipple repositioned to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference. Sometimes gynecomastia is treated with both liposuction and excision. Any surgical treatment to correct gynecomastia will require incisions. While most incision lines are concealed within natural contours, some may be visible and are a necessary result of breast reduction surgery. After surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions and an elastic bandage or support garment may be used to minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as it heals. The procedure duration is typically one to two hours and most men are able to return to work within 4 to 5 days depending on how much lifting is required. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. hile we can remember the past, we cannot write the future. Only our children, the future of our community, can do that.” -Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks Parenting gives moms and dads more joy and reward than anything else in the world. It also comes with a long list of to-dos’ ...responsibilities beyond the basics of meal prep, scheduling ballet and soccer, and keeping up with super-fast growth spurts. It’s easy to run through hurried tasks of the everyday (even when they feel more exhausting than easy), but one to-do tops the list and perhaps requires the most from us. Call it imbuing core values or passing down traditions...simply put, it’s raising our kids to be good people. And we, as parents, are our children’s first teachers. Our job is to guide, encourage and inspire our children to be kind, respectful, grateful, contributing citizens of the world. Grounded securely in our present and connected deeply to our past, we are building for the future. Such a big responsibility calls for a partner. Our children spend more time with their school teachers and school friends than they do with us at home. This is why selecting the right school for your children - for your family - is so important.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks’ beautiful words (above) resonate. Even if it’s been a long, exhausting day and - like me - you probably still have much more to do, pause and take a moment to reflect on his message, reinforcing the opportunity of today. It’s our responsibility to empower and inspire our children in the present, in turn writing a vibrantly bright future for us all.

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis? BY FELIX M. RAMIREZ, D.O.
T
he first response to a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is usually, “What in the world is that?” Although it’s strange sounding, there are more than 200,000 US cases per year. Unlike typical back pain which is caused by some type of trauma to the spine, AS is a chronic condition caused by inflammation of the vertebrae. The inflammatory arthritis affects the spine and large joints making it a form of spinal arthritis. In advanced and more severe cases, abnormal bone growth in the spine may cause the joints to fuse together resulting in an inflexible spine reducing mobility. The good news is that it can be treated by a medical professional. The condition usually begins in early adulthood, in the late teens, and has been more prevalent in men, but women are susceptible to it just the same. However, AS can still develop at any age. It’s been known to be an inherited disease although not everyone with the gene will ever develop it. Symptoms always include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. Spondylitis often starts at the sacrum (the lowest part of the spine). Pain in the back and joints are also common along with intermittent flare-ups of spinal pain. It could be mild or severe, and eventually lead to a hunched over posture. Unfortunately, the disease can also affect other ligaments and tendons, as well as the eyes and intestines. Some patients experience vision problems, and inflammation in the knees, ankles, and beneath the heel. Fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite may also occur. Typical warning signs of the disease are: ▸▸ Unexplained lower back pain for no apparent reason ▸▸ Unexplained tightness in the chest, pain in heel, and joints ▸▸ Pain comes and goes, but significantly is getting worse up the spine ▸▸ Temporary relief from over-the-counter medications ▸▸ Family history of AS Nonetheless, early intervention and treatment can help control pain and stiffness, and may reduce or prevent deformity. A physician cannot give a single test to diagnose AS, but an extremely detailed exam and patient history will help determine the diagnosis. The physician may also order imaging tests such as an MRI, or x-ray. Treatment includes medication, physical therapy, and in rare cases surgery. Remember, it’s always important to not ignore symptoms. Make an appointment to see a physician as soon as any signs exist. Felix M. Ramirez, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Pembroke Pines/Hollywood area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 2301 N. University Drive, Suite 204, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 447-0577.

Sharon and Sam Rothberg visited their original hometown of Cleveland, Ohio last summer, but took a little piece of their current hometown with them. Of course, the visit wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the infamous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The museum recognizes and archives the history of the best-known and most influential artists, producers, and other notable figures who have had an influence on the development of rock and roll. The Hollywood couple was rockin’ their copy of Our City Hollywood.
